Feudalism was a system of governance that existed in medieval Europe from the 9th to 15th centuries where land was divided among people based on loyalty and service to those of higher rank. At the top was the king, who owned all the land and granted fiefs or ownership of land and people to vassals in exchange for their allegiance and military service. Society was organized in a strict hierarchy with serfs at the bottom providing labor to those above like knights and lords who each owed obligations to those of higher rank up to the king.
