Abstract
The objective of this project is to provide an automatic
railway gate at a level crossing replacing the gates operated by the
gatekeeper. It deals with two things.
Firstly, it deals with the reduction of time for which the gate
is being kept closed. And secondly, to provide safety to the road
users by reducing the accidents. By the presently existing system
once the train leaves the station, the stationmaster informs the
gatekeeper about the arrival of the train through the telephone.
Once the gatekeeper receives the information, he closes the gate
depending on the timing at which the train arrives.
Hence, if the train is late due to certain reasons, then gate
remain closed for a long time causing traffic near the gates. By
employing the automatic railway gate control at the level crossing
the arrival of the train is detected by the sensor placed near to the
gate.
Hence, the time for which it is closed is less compared to the
manually operated gates and also reduces the human labor. This
type of gates can be employed in an unmanned level crossing
where the chances of accidents are higher and reliable operation is
required. Since, the operation is automatic; error due to manual
operation is prevented.
Automatic railway gate control is highly economical
microcontroller based arrangement, designed for use in almost all
the unmanned level crossings in the country.

1.1 Automatic railway gate control system
In general, Railway gates are opened or closed manually by a
gate keeper. The information about arrival of train for opening
or closing of door is received from nearby station. But some
railway crossings are totally unmanned and many railway
accidents occur at these unmanned level crossings.
To avoid the human intervention at level crossings completely,
we need to automate the process of railway gate control.

1.2 Apply It on Place
Our project is designed using 8051 microcontroller to avoid
railway accidents happening at unattended railway gates.
This project utilizes two IR trans-receiver pair; one pair of IR
trans-receiver is fixed at one side of the railway gate and
similarly the other pair is fixed at the other side of the railway
gate.
Whenever a signal from any of the trans-receiver is detected a
buzzer is sounded for say five seconds and then the gates are
closed we will be using DC geared motor to open and close the

gates. Now when the train is again detected at other IR trans-
receiver the gates are opened. We will be using L293 driver
IC to control the motor i.e. open and close the gates.
This type of gates can be employed in an unmanned level
crossing where the chances of accidents are higher and reliable
operation is required. Since, the operation is automatic; error
due to manual operation is prevented. Automatic railway gate

Happy story (1):
As by automatic operation gate can be closed one day a puppy
can be safe on time of train at crossing as gate closed and it
could not enter and pass through the crossing.
Sad story (1):

Due to automatic operation gate just closed by timing but at a
moment one cow just trapped between gate and gate was not
opened particularly so by helter-skelter movement he run
towards track and came below train.
Happy story (2):
On timing of train at crossing, traffic happened and all drivers
and vehicles owner make condition very difficult but after
implementation of this automatic gate control system on timing
of train gate just closed it self so uncertainly just removed and
proper timing just maintained.
Sad story (2):
By automatic gate operation, although there was time to cross
the track but Atul can also had to wait up to passing of train and
at a movement, he had hurry about his tuition.

control system first of all we visit to the many railway station
and railway crossing.
we are discuss with railway crossing gate keeper about the
accidents at railway crossing and gate keeper long time discuss
about this problem.
After we goes other railway crossing and meet the railway
crossing gate keeper and discuss about this problem .after we
find the ideas. We have chosen the automatic railway gate
control system with using microcontroller.
