3. Problem statement
This Project explicitly deals with one of the most
common problem that is traffic jams besides a
Railway crossing. Since gates of Railway crossing
are usually manually operated, for most of the
times, gates are kept closed for no reason
increasing road traffic. Moreover in our country
accidents at rail road crossing are increasing day
by day and the train accidents cause severe
damage to life and property. To solve the above
problem, we have come with an idea that would
automatically control the Railway gates at
junctions.
4. Objectives
The main objective of this project is to automize
the unmanned railway gate. This way, it would
decrease the cost of gatekeeper at the junction
and also the gate will close/open automatically.
The sensors will sense and detect the train and it
would send the signals to the motors connected
with gate of the crossing. Due to this, the accidents
rated would decrease due to human negligence.
5. Literature Review
The objective of this paper is to provide an
automatic railway gate at a level crossing replacing
the gates Operated by the gatekeeper. The system
reduces the time for which the gate remains
closed. This type of gates can be employed in an
unmanned level crossing where the chances of
accidents are higher and reliable operation is
required. Since, the operation is automatic, error
due to manual operation is prevented. The system
works on a microcontroller based control. The
proposed system uses ATmega 16A
microcontroller with the help of IR sensors. The
6. cont.. Literature Review
This paper is concerned with the automatic railway
gate control operation which is implemented
in unmanned level crossings at remote areas by
detecting a train approaching. To do that the gate
is sensed by means of infrared ray (IR) sensor
placed on either side of the railway. This system
uses microcontroller with the help of IR sensors..
Railway gate may be saved for the road users to
prevent accidents in terms of train speed at level
crossing. Since the closing time of automatic gate
control is less as compared to the manually
operated gates so it provides highly safety to the
7. Methodology
We are concerned of providing an automatic
railway gate control at unmanned level crossings
replacing the gates operated by gate keepers and
also the semi-automatically operated gates. It
deals with two things;
Firstly, it deals with the reduction of time for which
the gate is being kept closed. Secondly, to provide
safety to the road users by reducing the accidents
that usually occurs due to carelessness of road
users and human error made by the gatekeepers.
By employing the automatic railway gate control at
the level crossing the arrival of train is detected by
8. Cont… Methodology
Once the train motion is sensed, the sensed signal
is sent to the microcontroller and it checks for
possible presence of vehicle between the gates,
again using sensors. Subsequently, buzzer
indication and light signals on either side are
provided to the road users indicating the closure of
gates. Once, no vehicle is sensed in between the
gate, the motor is activated and the gates are
closed. The departure of the train is detected by
sensors placed at about 2km from the gate at
opposite direction. The signal about the departure
is sent to the microcontroller, which in turn
operates the motor and opens the gate. Thus, the
11. Utilization of Project
The main aim of this project is to automize the
unmanned railway gate. The gate gets open/close
automatically whenever the train comes and
leaves the railway-road crossing. This project can
be used in Pakistan rail road crossing. It can also
be used at the exchange of motorways and high
ways.
