SYNOPSIS NO: 3 (GROUP B) READER TITLE: The Geometry Of Feeling
AUTHOR: Juhani Pallasmaa
The reading of ‘The Geometry of Feeling’, by the author, Juhani Pallasmaa mentioned that architecture is
becoming a field of technology. More of a discipline which is fully determined by its own rules and value
systems.
Juhani discussed the matters of the advancement of modern science which is split into two that is
“Elementatism”, viewing dominant in the theory, reading and practice of art and architecture, and
“Reductionism”, the minimalist contact to architecture. An example like the point she uses which was the
ideology taught by Bauhaus School, the architecture is taught and analysed as a play with form combining
various visual elements ofform and space. Ithelps us stimulates our visual sense. She then gave a question to
ponder on which was, “Are elements of a building ( walls, windows, doors ) real units of the architectural
effect?”. To me, these elements, no matter how small they might be, is the one of the most powerful ways to
help humans experience the architectural space. The author also mentioned how the occupants gives soul to a
building through the interactions it has with its them. Its not just by form and structure but by the experience
that the people have with the building, the interaction and feeling with the building permits us to appreciate and
understand its function and purpose. A reason example can be one of the design of Zaha Hadid, where she
designed the Vitra Fire Station in Germany, where it was suppose to be for the Fire Station but it ended up
being a museum because it didn’t serve its inhabitants. The author describes this as a “basic vocabulary”, a
basic understanding of the world around us that serves to inform us about the reality to identify the traits of a
building, by knowing what sort of sign to look out for.
The architecture ofimagery, the artistic dimension ofa work of art does not lie in the actual object, but it exists
only in the consciousness ofthe observer. It’s not the form, but the images transmitted by the forms that give it
meaning. That’s what I have learned when reading this passage.
