SYNOPSIS NO: 4 READER TITLE: Towards a critical regionalism
AUTHOR: Kenneth Frampton
Based on Kenneth Frampton, “architecture can only be sustained ifit assumes an arriere-garde
position”. This is still relevantuntil this day even though his journal was published 30 years
ago. One mustpractice a critical arriere-garde by removing itselffrom both optimization of
advanced technology and the ever-presenttendency in order to cultivate a identity-giving
culture while resisting the course to universal technique.
Critical regionalism, coined by Alex Tzonis and Liliane Lefaivre in “The grid and the Pathway” (1981),
carries a fundamental strategy to mediate the impactof universal civilization. To resist
universal civilization, we can maintain ourselves ata high level ofself-consciousness to find
inspiration through locals needs and take contextual into account.
Kenneth also mentioned that the Megalopolis is no longer being able to maintain its defined urban
form. This is largely due to the field ofurban design degenerate into a theoretical subject
which brings little relation to the reality of modern development. In Martin Heidegger’s
“Building, Dwelling, Thinking,(1954)”, he critically points outthat the existence ofa
phenomena so called universal placelessness. As such he stated that “abstract conceptof
space is more or less an endless continuum ofevenly subdivided spatial components or
integers.” In relation to that, he suggested to redefine definition. As such one can reform a
definition that is related to Building into a definition that is suited for Dwelling.
When we are surrounded with overwhelming amountof placelessness in our modern environment,
this would results in precondition ofa bounded domain that would be favor to the creation of
architecture of resistance. Thus, in such boundary will allow the built form to stand against
all these continuous changes to the Megalopolis.Atthe end ofthe day, the Megalopolis will
not be the way as it was planned at the beginning stage ofurban planning anymore.
