SYNOPSIS NO: READER TITLE: Life Between Buildings
AUTHOR: Jan Gehl
According to Jan Gahl’s Life Between Buildings, He believed thatthere’s the
existence ofthree kinds ofoutdoor activities that each one ofthem behave differently and
reacts differently to the society. The three activities are necessary activities, optional
activities similar and social activities. Necessary and Optional activities are reflecting
activities that one must complete in their daily life while social activities are on a more
spiritual and emotional level of human psychological welfare. Although each of the activities
acts differently, the three activities still occurs simultaneously at a time.
As Jan Gahl suggested, when these activities interwoven together it creates
opportunity for people to meet up together. He calls these interactions “see and hear
contacts”. And as these interactions increase, the collisions of opportunity start to pour in
and create a series of rewarding possibilities for the users of the space. As the space keeps
giving in, this would ensure a living space where people are constantly feel hyped and
inspirational at all time. This would results in the space becoming a attraction where human
can feel contacted by another person from the most modest way to a person can simply get
inspired by the area.
Life between cities isn’t always about beautiful architecture, even an attraction of a
city starts from a series of human interactions. It needs only the basic such as human
interactions where interactions can stimulates one’s experiences and their senses and
making them feel being one with the space. Even the smallest gesture of “see and hear
contacts” will be fulfilling. This interesting part of the city will always be a radiance to its
surrounding causing a ripple effect where people will constantly be aware of their senses,
being sensitive of their existence in that space. These life between buildings are always the
little details, while the cities and buildings are the big things; and usually it’s the little details
that are vital as little things make big things happens.
