2. Stage 1
What I looked for:
• Indication of engagement with intro reading – important factors mentioned
which you should find out more about (colonialism, geography, economics,
population etc.)
• Attempt to use advanced Google search modifiers
• Balance of broad (catch ‘big fish’) and specific search terms (more efficient)
Where people went right:
• Application of advanced Google search modifiers
• Restriction of scope to period under consideration – 18th century,
1750…1850
3. Stage 1
Where I think people went wrong What to do about it
Not thinking about the set question
Including irrelevant searches
Take time to unpack the question
Keep focus on origins of Ind. Rev.
Not reading instructions and criteria
Not giving 10 searches
Ensure you understand the task requirements
and criteria for success before you begin
Check you have achieved these after you
finish
4. Stage 2
What I looked for:
• Range of reasons to accept/reject resources across the set
• All resources given consideration
• Balance of introductory and in-depth/scholarly material
• Clear explanation for choice and decision to keep/reject

Where people went right:
• Considerations of titles, dates, publishers, authority of author/presenter

5. Stage 1
Where I think people went wrong What to do about it
Not editing work Take time to edit your work before submission
Have someone proof it for you
Not reading through the list before making their
decisions
Take time to get the whole picture
Misunderstanding the nature of works Ensure you treat and describe resources
accurately
Applying selection criteria more appropriate to
st. 3
Consider the different elements you’re to
assess in st. 2 and st. 3
Spurious reasoning for rejecting resources Think through reasons carefully and/or ask
someone else if it makes sense
6. Stage 3
What I looked for:
• Evidence of scanning resources
• Consideration of multiple +/- factors for a resources
• Sophisticated, error-free writing
• Balance of introductory and advanced resources
Where people went right:
• Showed awareness of need for scholarly material even if it is challenging to
read
• Showed awareness of own preferences for learning material format
• Made it clear if keeping/rejecting a resource
7. Stage 3
Where I think people went wrong What to do about it
Not scanning resources Take time to read intro, TSs, conclusion
Check for contents, index, tables, figures
Not reading instructions and criteria Ensure you understand the task requirements
and criteria for success before you begin
Check you have achieved these after you
finish
Not editing work Take time to edit your work before submission
Have someone proof it for you
Repeating reasons for stage 2 choice
Considering a narrow set of selection criteria
Consider the different elements you’re to
assess in st. 2 and st. 3
Not considering resources in light of the specific
question
As you scan, look out for material on causes,
factors, origins of Ind. Rev.
