Southern Colonies
1. Southern Colonies Chapter 3, Section 4 *1660- Tobacco prices fell and Plantations prospered *Establishing colonies took a lot of work: clear land, construct homes, churches, plant crops, and tend to the fields. *Because of this the demand for capable workers grew *English criminals and Scottish and Irish prisoners of war also shipped to colonies (Earn release for working for a period of time) *Many people came to the colonies as Indentured servants: People who would pay for their passage to America by working seven years for a person *Maryland started as a dream by Sir George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, a catholic Calvert-to establish a safe place for his fellow Christians *1632- Dream of colony cam true; King Charles I (Got land North of Virginia) *Calvert died before receiving the grant so his son, Cecilius Calvert inherited the colony and named it Maryland after English Queen, Henrietta Maria, or after the Virgin Mary *1634-Young Calvert sent two of his brothers, instead of himself, to the colony to maintain it; (Sailing up through the Potomac River) once they arrived in the new colony the first started tobacco harvesting * Every tobacco farmer had to also have 2 acres of corn ; also fruit, wheat, and livestock *1729 Baltimore was founded as Maryland’s port (largest settlement) *Come to Baltimore 100 for males, 100 for wife, 100 for each servant, and 50 for each child The Southern Colonies: Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland
