2. Prosocial behaviour, referring to a voluntary action that is intended to help or benefit another
individual or group of individuals. It is a social behaviour that benefit other people or society as a
whole such as helping, sharing, donating, co-operating, and volunteering. These actions may be
motivated by empathy and by concern about the welfare and rights of others, as well as for egoistic
or practical concerns. Evidence suggests that pro-sociality is central to the well-being of social
groups across a range of scales. Empathy is a strong motive in eliciting prosocial behaviour, and
has deep evolutionary roots. While
visiting my grandmother in Klang,
we were stopped at a traffic light by
a homeless indian man. The
scrubby looking man went to car to
car knocking begging for money. My
initiation reaction was why didn’t the
man work to survive, he’s in perfect
condition to be working for himself.
As soon as he reached over to my
car, I immediately sensed my dad
unwillingness to offer him anything. As he lingered for a few seconds, my dad finally gave in and
lower his window down. The homeless man took whatever my dad offered and went off. This event
made me reflect that my dad was egoistic about the man pressuring his reaction.
