2. Brief Description of Rationale of DesignBrief Description of Rationale of Design
It was determined by General Motors
IT Management to improve
troubleshooting skills for second level
data center operators working at GM
Technical Center in Warren, Michigan.
Management has first decided to do a
live training session for all operators,
then change it to a self paced training
using an instructional manual. As a
Systems Administrator working there
and Instructional Designer I
volunteered to write contents of
training manual.
3. Things that went well duringThings that went well during
DesignDesign
What went well is the fact that I played both SME and ID roles
because I work as Systems Administrator in the Information
Technology filed and playing role of instructional designer as part
of this course. That have facilitated my job as I had to deal only
with Data Center Operators, their Management and my Manager.
Also I got some very valuable feedback from my group that I am
very grateful to. Also I wanted to mention the great
encouragement that I received from my Instructor.
4. Challenges experienced and how
they were addressed
The biggest challenge I faced was change of scope of
training from a live session to self- paced training by my
manager. He did not feel that I should spend time doing
live training sessions for other IT personnel outside his
department. I reached an agreement with him and Data
Center Manger to develop training manual then make it
available to DC Operators as a self –paced manual to be
used as needed as a job aid.
5. Future plans or applications for
design or solution
My Training manual could be used in the
future by any corporate trainer who wants
to conduct a live training session. Also
there will be ongoing updates added to
the manual to make it as current as
possible.
6. Lessons LearnedLessons Learned
I can’t stress importance of this
project as it gave me hands on
experience on how to design
instructional materials from beginning
to the end.
I learned to quickly adapt to last
minute changes and execute them in a
positive manner that meets client
needs.
7. Impact of Designing a Solution on
my Professional Identity
I have gained a good experience from my
design which I could use in my job search as
an Instructional Designer and or Trainer.
My personal principle for any design or
solution is it has to meet client requirements
and as Designer be ready to make any last
minute changes based if requested by client
or learners.
