2. As a brief introduction to this module we would like to do a clarification on what we understand
for some concepts:
Participation: the right we have to
engage in society and in the decision-
making process about issues which
impact our lives
(see the module Community
participation)
Democracy: a type of political system
based on the people.
It is the people who elected their
representatives at decision-making
bodies (you can watch the video in the
next slide: What is Social Democracy?)
Active citizenship: involvement of
individuals in public life and especially in
the life of their communities with the aim
to improve it through their personal
skills.
Volunteering: in the context of families,
education and schools, the involvement
of families in Parents’ Organisations.
When you are engaged with the Parents’
Organisation of your children school(s)
and you don’t receive money for it, then
you are a volunteer.
