What is
Clipper &
Clamper?

4. CLIPPER
Clippers are networks that use diodes to clip
a portion of input signal without distorting the
remaining part of wave form.
We use diodes along with resistors to shape
waveforms.
If we want to clip portion of the waveform we
use clippers for this purpose and if we want to
shift or clamp the dc voltage level we use
clampers
5. CLAMPER
A Clamper is a network constructed of a
diode a resistor, and a capacitor that
shifts waveform to a different dc level
without changing the appearance of the
applied signal.

The major difference between clipper and clamper is that clipper is a limiting circuit
which limits the output voltage while clamper is a circuit which shifts the DC level of
output voltage. The clipper and clamper circuits are exactly opposite to each other
regarding their working principle.

So, Where do we use Clippers and Clampers?
Lets Discuss about it.

The complex transmitter and receiver circuitry of
television clamper is used as a base line stabilizer
to define sections of the luminance signals to
preset levels.
Clampers are also called as direct current
restorers as they clamp the wave forms to a fixed
DC potential.
Clampers can be used for removing the
distortions and used as a base line stabilizer to
define sections of the luminance signals in TV
For improving the overdrive recovery time
clampers are used.
Clampers can be used as voltage doublers or
voltage multipliers.

They are frequently used for the separation of
synchronizing signals from the composite
picture signals.
For the generation of new waveforms or
shaping the existing waveform, clippers are
used.
The typical application of diode clipper is for
the protection of transistor from transients, as a
freewheeling diode connected in parallel across
the inductive load.
The excessive noise spikes above a certain level
can be limited or clipped in FM transmitters by
using the series clippers.
Frequently used half wave rectifier in power
supply kits is a typical example of a clipper. It clips
either positive or negative half wave of the input.

So we can say Clipper circuits are used to clip off
unwanted portion of the waveform, without distorting
the remaining part of the waveform. The half wave
rectifier is the best and simplest type of clipper circuit
which clips off the negative portion of the input
signal.By changing the orientation of the diode in the
circuit, positive or negative portion of the input signal
can be clipped off.
and About Clamper, they are used to add a dc level
as per the requirements to the ac output signal. They
are often used in the television receivers as dc
restorer. The video signal in television is processed
through capacitively coupled amplifiers hence
the signal loses its dc component which effectively
loses black and white reference levels and the
blanking level.
