This document discusses idioms, which are combinations of words that have a figurative meaning due to common usage that is different from the literal meaning. 2.  Idiom is a combination of words that has a
figurative meaning owing to its common
usage. An idiom’s figurative is separate from
the literal meaning.

3.  At the eleventh hour means at the last minute ; almost too late.
 Example : “ Yes, I got the homework done in time. I finished it at
the eleventh hour, but I wasn’t late.
 As easy as pie means very easy.
 Example : “ I thought you said this was a difficult lesson. It isn’t.
In fact, it’s as easy as pie.”
 Keep / stay in touch (with someone) means remain informed
(about someone) / in contact (with someone) by writing, calling,
sending e-mail, etc. on a regular basis.
 Example : “ I haven’t seen Kai for two or three years but we
keep (stay) in touch by e-mail.”
 Sooner or later means eventually.
 Example : “ You’ve been working too hard for too long. If you
don’t relax a little, sooner or later you’re going to get sick.”
 Take it easy : relax.
 Example : “I don’t have any special vacation plans. I’m just going
to take it easy.”

4.  Many idiomatic expressions, in their original
use were not figurative but had literal
meaning.
 For instance: spill the beans meaning to let
out a secret probably originates in a physical
spilling of beans which are either being eaten
or measured out. The point is that the spiller
certainly does not want to lose any beans.

5.  In linguistics, idioms are usually presumed to
be figures of speech contradicting the
principle of compositionality.[4] This principle
states that the meaning of a whole should be
constructed from the meanings of the parts
that make up the whole. In other words, one
should be in a position to understand the
whole if one understands the meanings of
each of the parts that make up the whole.
