And then it hit me . . . That 2 nd management job in the hospitality industry . . . Heard about it from a customer That transition to an office job . . . Asked the CEO for a reference because he knew me That 1 st trainer/technical writer job . . . My boss changed jobs and when she heard the company was bidding that role on a contract, they bid me. The first and second contract management positions . . . Never posted . . . I was appointed/sought out. My first independent contracting job as a trainer . . . The local community college asked someone if they knew of anyone. They knew me through a professional association. My next job . . . Same thing through a professional association. Most of my company work . . . Repeat work based on reputation . . . We have to put ourselves out there. . . Are you doing that? In fact, in all the promotions, etc. etc. I only interviewed for 3 posted positions EVER. Pick a partner at your table and dialogue for 2 minutes about your definition of networking.
