“You have been commissioned by the Northern
Echo to produce a new magazine or newspaper
product. Your product could be in any style or
genre but it must be self financed through sales
or advertising. You must also produce your
magazine for a specified audience segment
within the 16 to 25 age group”
4. How I intend to meet this brief
To meet the brief I have been given I will;
- Produce a magazine aimed to suit the needs and
interests of an ABC1 audience
- Making a high
quality
magazine
- Aiming for a target group age of 16-24!
- Funded through advertisement!
5. Why Travel?
- I have a passion for travel myself and travel a lot so
I have knowledge on the magazine I am creating
- I enjoy all the aspects of travelling so the idea of
going to the locations, getting photos and writing
the articles would suit myself
- As a young student myself I know the type of things
my audience will want and look for in a student
travel magazine
- I have noticed there is a gap in the market for this
type of magazine
- Looking at my audience, I fit in to it myself so I
know what would appeal to people the same as
myself, making the magazine easy and enjoyable
to create
- Since reading this genre myself a lot I know what I
will need to be including in my magazine
6. The Aim?Educate people on the opportunities that are outside their comfort
zone
Give students the confidence to travel
Encouraging people to try new things
Show my passion for travelling to other individuals
All my readers should be able to relate to the magazine
Show unique travel locations and activities, and give them
guidance
7. Audience Profile
Male 50%
Female 50%
Age 16-24
ABC1 73%
Average Spend a week is £35/40
45% want to take a gap year
65% want to go to university
55% have part time jobs
8. Secondary Audience
My secondary audience are Northern Echo readers, parents, siblings,
possible older travels.
So, what do I need to consider?
- No taboo language
- No nakedness
- Nothing inappropriate
9. Appealing to my audiences
Use appropriate
stylistics for
younger people,
both male and
female
Ensure I have article
that is suitable for
the younger age
group, this could be
through my
language usage e.g
colloquial language
10. Constraints – THE PRESS COMPLAINTS COMMISSION
The IPSO are the people that regulate the
magazines and place certain rules in which
journalists must oblige by to protect the
welfare of others. There are 16 codes that
must be followed by magazines and
newspapers. I have created FIVE golden
rules in which I much obey by:
11. 1. Ensuring I have permission before entering someone's land or a certain area for my
photography
2. All the information I include must be updated and it is all accurate
3. Don’t copyright any of the images I use
4. I will get consent before questioning, photographing or publishing information about an
individual
5. Ensure all information is confidential therefore not giving out information about an
individual unless I have been given permission
5 Golden rules
12. Idea’s Feedback
“Photography
could be hard to
get”
“Relevant to the
target audience“
“Northern local
locations matches the
Northern echo
newspaper itself“
“Has potential due to
the idea of it including
segments on some
local activities and
travel locations“
13. What's different about my magazine?
My magazine fulfils a gap in the market, in
the way in which there appears to be no
travel magazine that only aims to a younger
target audience. This will make my
magazine unique and a new type of
magazine 16-24 year olds can take interest
in.
15. Strong, very high quality detailed
photography
Bright colours
Logo stands out
- branding
Stylish fonts to add to
style of magazine
Active, in-motion images
16. Layout is neat, images fit together in
a smooth and professional manner
Colors with text and boxes match
(orange)
Font is sans – it is clear to read,
matches the overall style of the
page
The images used are bright and
sharp, seems like very high quality
17. The article is laid out over the images, creates a unique and interesting vibe
Sans serif fonts match the professional look, and appeals to the older target
audience in which this magazine is aimed to
Colors are soft and aren’t too over powering and bright – they have used black and
white for the font colors to ensure it is readable
18. FontsMy magazine is simplistic, modern and fresh – I want fonts to emphasize that
idea and create something that suits my magazine
Colors
These are the different fonts I found!
20. FeedbackWho did I ask?
- 16-18 year olds
- Students in college
- Both male and female
- Those with both part time jobs or no part time job
- All with varied interests/personalities
21. “I like the use of the sans serif font, it's easy to read and is clear and understandable.”
“I like the use of the simplistic black and white color scheme as it represents the purity of the snow found in
Andorra as well complimenting the imagery on the page making the images stand out more”
“I like the use of imagery on the page as the images link to the text and represent what the article is about, also
the use of good landscape shots”
“I like the voice of the first person and second person narrative voice as the writer talks about their personal
experiences but also involves the audience in a type of ‘offering advice’ kind of way”
“I like the layout as it’s the perfect medium of simplistic and static as the DPS looks very busy and full but there
isn’t too much going on.”
“Use of capitalization is good too – to emphasizes your text well.”!
“However, could add more images and have more of a balanced image to text ratio as
the article is quite long and there is not a lot to read, maybe add more one colour to your
colour scheme such as using a blue to make your break out box stand out a little.”
