Violence Is Defined By Behavior Involving Physical Force
Did you know that one in four women has been physically abused? How would you feel if this one
person was your best friend, your aunt, your grandmother or your mother?
Words. Actions. Guns. Rifles. Bombs. Explosions. What do all these words have in common? Harm.
Injury. Destruction. Violence.
Violence is defined by behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone
or something. Did you know that this issue causes more than 1.6 million deaths worldwide each
year? In fact, is one of the leading causes of death in all parts of the world for persons ages 15 to 44.
There is a problem in the way human beings understand of the concept of violence. Many people
believe that violence is directly linked with war..but in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Isn't it sad how such brutality is willingly accomplished? How Violent behaviour is pinpointed in
every continent, country and city of the world.
Why is it that when faced with anger, we have such a strong feeling to fight back in an overly
aggressive manner. The news is full of stories about murders, kidnappings, terrorist attacks and
wars. Many people have the idea that violence is the solution to everything, when in reality it is
really the problem. But... may I remind you that violence is not necessarily inevitable. Have you
ever thought of this? There is nowhere in our biology textbooks that states that such behaviour is
innate. In fact, we do not have a DNA designated for violence. In fact, the only reasonable argument
behind the fact that many believe war is inevitable is because we have caused it to become this way.
Over the last few decades, worries have shifted. In 1970, children and teenagers worried that it was
raining outside meaning they couldn't go to the park or to the municipal pool. But now, it is the fear
of staying safe on your walk home from school or being able to travel safely for a family vacation.
Today, children play with toy guns and watch television programs completely unsuitable for their
age. What happened to the times when young children made Superman fly from one building to
another. Or letting Thomas and his friends slowly navigate through the extensive railway system.

Media Violence Essay
Does entertainment influence society's attitude towards violent behavior? In order to fully answer
this question we must first understand what violence is. Violence is the use of one's powers to inflict
mental or physical injury upon another; examples of this would be rape or murder. Violence in
entertainment reaches the public by way of television, movies, plays, music, and novels. Through
the course of this essay it will be proven that violence in entertainment is a major factor in the
escalation of violence in society, once this is proven we will take all of the evidence that has been
shown throughout this paper and come to a conclusion as to whether or not violence in
entertainment is justified and whether or not it should be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In that same study other possible causes for the vast increases in violence were studied, the 'baby
boom' effect, trends in urbanization, economic trends, trends in alcohol abuse, the role of capital
punishment, civil unrest, the availability of guns, and exposure to television(Lamson 32). Each of
these alleged causes was tested in a variety of ways to see whether it could be eliminated as a
credible contributor to doubling the crime rate in the United States, and one by each of them was
invalidated, except for television.
Children average four hours of television per day, and in the inner city that increases to as much as
eleven hours a day, with an average of eight to twelve violent incidents per hour. It is also interesting
to note that violence occurs some fifty–five times more often on television than it does in the real
world (Medved 156). FBI and census data show the homicide arrest rate for seventeen–year–olds
more than doubled between 1985 and 1991, and the rates for fifteen–and sixteen–year–olds
increased even faster.
Movies also add their fair share to the problem of violence in society. Researchers have established
that copycat events are not an anomaly.

Watching the World through Television
Most of the world can be viewed through the television. Educational programs are aired. News from
all over the world is broadcasted. Anything from sports to music is displayed on the television.
While there are many positive aspects of mass media, to the contrary, there are also violent
programs portrayed. Violence in all aspects of the media has drawn public attention with practically
every novel type of media entertainment (Slotsve et al., 2008). With children being the main
audience, this is a topic that has become highly debatable. Over the years more and more cases have
come to light alleging television is the culprit to violence. Beginning in 1994, a three year study was
conducted. This utmost recognized study of violence in television, the National Television Study,
evaluated violence on the television (Slotsve et al., 2008). Through this study, a trend between
violent and belligerent antisocial behavior was documented (Slotsve et al., 2008). The violence
portrayed on the television can create footprints in the child's mind. The paths become a link to
abnormal behavior patterns. In addition, the Surgeon General's Program of Research also identified
a contributory linking between televised violence and antisocial behavior with children being more
affected (Slotsve et al., 2008). The question still remains, is television a root for violent behavior?
There are a few neurological effects that have been associated with long durations of televisions
viewing.

Examining the Behavior Between Media and Antisocial...
Nowadays, aggressive and violent behaviour have been said to be caused by media violence in many
researches. Media violence has been defined as "visual portrayals of acts of physical aggression by
one human or human–like character against another" while violent behaviour is defined as overt and
intentional physically aggressive behaviour against another person.
I found that PsycINFO database from Ovid is useful and reliable as apart from providing clear

Raw data was analysed with log–linear logistic regression analyses.
The findings indicated that despite the existence of a history of aggressive behaviour, the hypothesis
are supported. It was also consistent with the hypothesis that extensive television viewing helps to
explain the association between certain environmental risks and subsequent aggressive behaviour,
and also the bidirectional relationship between television violence and aggressive behaviour.
The difference in the content of programs watched by males and females during adolescence and
early adulthood is yet to be explored. There has been little research has tested the general effect of
violent lyrics on aggressive behaviour while holding musical tone constant, even very little research
directly comparing the effects of media violence presented through visual and auditory modes.
This study was aimed to examine the effect of violent lyrics with musical tone held constant and
compare the violent visual and auditory media effects.
There were two hypotheses raised from this study:
1. Music–lyric combinations would arouse more aggression than music–alone or lyric–alone
aggression. 2. Violent music lyrics, adding to any priming effects from violent visual media, would
further increase the probability of aggressive behaviour.
Participants in this study were 194 university students and staff (99 females, 85 males) most of

Negative Impact of Media Violence on Children
Violence in entertainment is as old as civilization itself. In the earlier centuries Romans would
delight themselves by cheering on gladiators fought themselves to death. Dramatic theater was also
full of jealousy, retribution, and violence. Although entertainment violence is not new it wasn't until
the twentieth century that heavy doses of violence were made available to vastly everyone. Over the
past one hundred years, as mass media has become more prevalent, it has also become more violent.
In the earlier part of the twentieth century media such as motion pictures and radio provided
entertainment for those who could afford them. Although these commodities were present few
people considered them necessary for living. With the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obviously, if a child is typical, television plays a huge role in their lives. Literally thousands of
studies since the 1950s have asked whether there is a link between exposure to violence and
behavior. It is now understood by researchers that children learn new behaviors by direct experience
or by imitating others in their social environment. Programs outfitted for children often contain
more violence more violence than adult television. Most of the violent acts presented on television
often go unpunished and are often accompanied by humor. The consequences of human suffering
and loss are rarely depicted. This can lead young people to commit unknowingly and comically.
Many shows glamorize violence and this is because television often promotes violent acts as a fun
and effective way to get fulfill desired actions without receiving any form of punishment. It is even
common for animated movies, digital video discs, and basic television labeled G– rated to contain
violence. Even superheroes beating up villains exhibits a message that violence is normal and
encourages. Many children will try to be like their favorite superhero and obtain the "good guy' role
in their play unknowingly participating in violent behaviors. Watching television also has the ability
to make children less sensitive toward its effects on victims and the amount human suffering it
causes. This is the act of desensitization. Desensitization refers to the idea that repeated exposure to

The Relationship Between Democracy And Civility
Author Ken Burns (2011) describes the relationship between democracy and civility when he said,
"But civility is essential to our ability as a nation to confront together difficult issues, even when we
may disagree, and to continue to improve as a country" (National Constitution Center, 2011).
Democracy and civility go hand in hand; without democracy, there wouldn't be civility and without
civility there wouldn't be democracy. In a democracy, the model of dissent should be deliberation,
yet the long and careful debate we once had has shifted towards violent measures to fulfill one's own
needs. The model of dissent has transformed from deliberation to violence due impart, to the
technological advancements throughout the world. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Albert Bandura, a renowned psychologist, studied how some behaviors are learned through
imitation. He calls this the social learning theory. It is exemplified in his classic experiment called
the 'Bobo' Doll Experiment. The children participating in the experiment were individually shown
into a room with toys and then played with them for 10 minutes while "either, 1) 24 children (12
girls and 12 boys) watched a male or female model behaving aggressively toward a toy called a
"Bobo Doll". The adults attacked the Bobo doll in a distinctive manner, either punching or kicking
and in some cases using a hammer. 2) Another 24 children were exposed to a non–aggressive model
who played in a quiet and subdued manner for 10 minutes. 3) The final 24 children were used as a
control group and were not exposed to any model at all" (McLeod, 2011). In order to study whether
these three situations had a different effect on the children, the experimenter subjected all the
children to "mild aggression arousal" (McLeod, 2011) by taking each child separately to a room
with toys. Once the child began to play with the toys, the experimenter "told the child that these
were the experimenter's best toys and she had decided to reserve them for the other children"
(McLeod, 2011). The experimenter then brought the child into the next room, which had some
aggressive toys, such as a toy hammer, and some non–aggressive toys. For twenty minutes the

Zombie Culture : The Dark Sides Of American Culture
When one thinks about American culture or "the good life", things that are often thought of are:
house in the suburbs, family, job, pets, etc. which is nothing extraordinary. It is what the typical
American knows as everyday quiet life. For a culture that wishes nothing but simplicity and
opportunity, it sure does feed on the "dark" aspects of its culture. For example, one of the dark sides
of American culture is the presences of enthusiasm over the living dead. A rise in zombie culture in
America could be due to the general morbid curiosity that many people hold. Americans want to
connect with what they see through different forms of media such as television or music. Mimicking
how some characters overcome obstacles could possibly help people discover more about
themselves, and how "brain–thirsty" our world can be with the cold heartedness of people. In a show
very popular right now, "The Walking Dead", many topics arise that people may also be going
through. That may be why zombie culture is on the rise in American pop culture. People search for
things that they don't have in their life to fulfill their desires because people naturally want a full and
stable life. Although these zombie shows intrigue Americans, the opposing viewpoints say that
violent films can increase hostile behavior. Many studies have been conducted on how media and
hostile behavior are connected. Dale Archer points out that, "the results of a study done also
indicated that aggressive behavior didn't

Villain Or Scapegoat
Living in a world full of crime and violence, people begin to wonder what the cause of the violence
is and how it can then be prevented. Unfortunately, there is not a single root cause that can be found
when people attempt to decipher why children are deciding to bring guns to school and murder their
peers. Some may believe that it was influenced by being exposed to a hostile family, violent films,
or gory video games. Although sometimes this might be the case, a lot of the time it is not as black
and white, making this topic very difficult to analyze and understand. Both Jonathan L. Freedman in

Huesmann and Taylor then begin to define violence in its various forms and stages. This seemed to
be slightly redundant and useless information since it is obvious and is not specific to the topic in
question. The authors then begin to obtain the reader's attention as they begin to describe the issue
faced by the youth having unlimited access to violence on television. A study done on children is
then mentioned, where half of the group watches a violent movie and the other half a non–violent
movie. The two groups of kids are then combined for a hockey game where levels of aggressive
behavior are observed and compared. As expected, the research indicated that the kids who watched
the violent movie demonstrated more violent behavior.
The authors continue to point out the various influences that media violence is affecting the youth
and studies that back up their arguments. Huesmann and Taylor then shift to another source of
violent influence, videogames. The various ratings categories of video games, Everyone, Teen, and
Mature, are mentioned and the fact that all three of them allow some sort of violence. It is
mentioned that the Teen category consists of roughly 94% violent games which is astonishing. This
turns out to become a major issue because of the amount of time that teenagers spend playing video
games. The authors then mention studies that show that teenagers who play violent video games

Childrens Behavior Is Worst Today Than Ten Years Ago
Behavior is an action or reaction to the environment or to internal thoughts and emotions.
Behavioral symptoms are persistent or repetitive behaviors that are unusual, disruptive,
inappropriate, or cause problems. Aggression, attitude, criminal behavior, defiance, drug use,
hostility, inappropriate sexual behavior, inattention, secrecy, and self–harm is examples of
behavioral symptoms. When you are asked about someone's behavior you think of etiquette, culture,
form, manners, mores, proprieties; p's and q's; amenity, civility, courtesy, politeness; attitude,
carriage, poise, pose, posture, presence; aspect, look, mien; formality, protocol, rules; custom, habit,

Causes in behavior stem from bullying, discipline, and mental health problems and illness.
As a parent, of three children it can be hard to know if your child misbehaves at school. If you hear
that your child is acting out, whether it's a comment written in his or her agenda or a report card or
something mentioned to you in a parent–teacher conference, how do you know if it is a one–time
problem or a constant behavioral issue? I recall in 1999 the month of April. The United States had
its first crisis in a school setting. Many children are bringing guns, knives, and even bombs to
school. Why? Do they hate their teachers that badly? Is someone bullying them? Why are these
things happening in the schools? A school is a place where children can go to be educated. I feel that
since God has been taken out of the equation, trouble has found its way into our schools across the
country.
Child's behavior is worse today than it was ten years ago. Adults influence children by stating their
expectations for desired behavior and helping children understand that there are boundaries, or
limits, on behavior. Authoritative caregivers understand the importance of proper boundaries in
relationships in general, and appropriate limits in an adult–child relationship in particular. They
figure out and clearly communicate limits that will be most helpful in encouraging children to

Explain Why Children Should Not Play Violent Sports Essay
People are normally surrounded with numerous youth sports, adult professional and recreational
leagues as well as passionate fans. However, it is only small percentage of the population across the
globe that plays sports in professional manner (Holowchak & Reid 2013). The question as to
whether children should be allowed to play violent sports is usually asked by many people on daily
basis. Some sports tend to be fast paced and physical which makes them to be exciting and
fulfilling. There are numerous positive impacts of playing and viewing sport activities. But some
sports have a violent nature in them and they normally have psychological effect and can as well
affect emotional and physical health (Delaney & Madigan 2009). Therefore, children should not
play violent sports. Many adults and parents normally use this common phrase let them go and play
it is healthy. Many of them are under the thought that putting aggression in a certain sport is a
healthy means for aggressive energy. However, this might not be the appropriate and accurate
approach. Holowchak and Reid (2013) argue that exposure to violent behaviour or aggression within

perceive things such as committing murder as being acceptable and normal thing in the society.
Violent games are realistic that children normally take them seriously. Allowing children to play
violent video games can make a child to be lazy and avoid going out to play with other children.
Even when they go outside to play, they will games that are violent and this makes them to be too

Video Game Playing and its Effects on Personality and Behavior in relation to Aggression
In recent years, technological advances have introduced many new forms of entertainment, one of
the most popular being video games. Since their introduction, professionals and parents have
become concerned with the addictive power that video games can have on people, particularly
children and adolescents. Today, concern has shifted from the addictive effects of video game
playing to the possible effects that they have on players' aggression levels.
C. Braun and J. Giroux (1989) determined that the most popular category of video games is the

Two previous studies will be presented, and their results will help evaluate if video game playing
causes people to become more aggressive.
Although important, the addictive properties of the video games will not be discussed. Since some
of the studies cover gender differences but others do not, gender will not play a major role in this
paper as well.
STUDY 1
G. Kestenbaum and L. Weinstein (1985) studied the relationship of heavy video game use in
adolescent male subjects to personality and psycho–pathological factors. They hypothesized that
video game playing is positive in the sense that it releases pent–up aggressive energies. They felt
that after playing a video game, adolecents should feel more relaxed, having invested so much
energy, whereas those who never, or rarely play video games would not.
They also hypothesized that video games are particularly suited to low frustration tolerance
adolescents because of video games' nature of immediate feedback. (As opposed to discharging
aggression through sports, for example, in which the results are delayed from one's particular effort.)
Video games also protect the adolescent from ridicule, or social stress factors since they can play by
themselves and not be subject to external judgement. It was therefore hypthesized that they would

The Sociology Of Football
Introduction/Research
The sociology of football is very interesting topic to look into for most Americans. With football
being one of the most popular sports in America. The sport is consistently surrounding us with pee
wee, middle school, high school, college and a professional leagues. These professional leagues also
have a semi pro leagues as well. But what is sociology of sport and how can we connect it to
football? Just looking at the word sociology, the way Jay Coakly defines it as "is the study of the
social worlds that people create, maintain, and change through their relationships with each other"
(Coakly, 2009, p. 4). The definitions of sociology of sport is sub–discipline of sociology that studies
sports as parts of social and cultural. Sociology of sports can also be said as how do participates
within a sport or human interaction in a sport is the study of sociology of sport. But what makes
football a sport? There is a physical demand on the body to compete in the sport. Football that is
played with official's coaches, and staff. In football there is a huge competitive atmosphere were
being on top of the chain is praised greatly. Football has a national governing body that is called the
NFL or the National Football League. Making it to the NFL is the dream for most participates that
play football. Once players make the NFL, the goal is win a super bowl for the city that the player
plays for. Though all levels being the best is the idea form for football.

Television Violence and Aggression in Adolescents
Violence is very common in today's television programming. Teenagers are exposed to crude
indecent language, sexual activity, and graphic violence just by turning on the television. Teens
around the ages of fifteen or sixteen are at the age were most parents are not very strict about what
they watch on television compared to a five or six year old. If parents are not really concerned with
what teens around this age are watching on television most likely the teen has freedom to view very
graphic content. So how is this content affecting teenagers? Are teenagers copying what they
observe on television or is the violent content somehow influencing teens?

Media Violence or Myth?
Media violence is a topic that has warranted much discussion from active citizens, critics, and
scientific researchers on both sides of the argument. In order to better understand the media violence
debate a clear definition of violence, or aggression, must be established. However, one of the
reasons that the heated discussion over media violence even exists is because of the difficulty in
accomplishing this task. "Aggression is a highly complex phenomenon, whose etiology includes a
wide variety of psychological, social, and circumstantial factors. 'Measuring' aggression in
relationship to such an equally complex substance as the media is incredibly difficult" (Trend 45).

Even the data on children viewing violent images in television–the most researched media–is
apparent. Grimes, Anderson, and Bergen quote page seven of the report to the Surgeon General
(Television, 1972):
The accumulated evidence, however, does not warrant the conclusion that televised violence has a
uniformly adverse effect nor the conclusion that it has an adverse effect on the majority of children.
It cannot even be said that the majority of the children in the various studies we have reviewed
showed an increase in aggressive behavior in response to the violent fare to which they were
exposed. The evidence does indicate the televised violence may lead to increased aggressive
behavior in certain subgroups of children who might constitute a small portion or substantial
proportion of the total population of young television viewers. (109–110)
Contrary to the notion that children are the most vulnerable group among media viewers, youth (and
even people of all ages) are not negatively effected, and ironically can learn important lessons about
conflict in the world. Critics, researchers, or citizens making the argument that media violence is the

Protecting Children from Television Violence Essays
Summary #1
Television violence, and media violence in general, has been a controversial topic for several years.
The argument is whether young children are brainwashed into committing violent real–world crimes
because of violent and pugnacious behavior exposed in mass media. In his article "No Real
Evidence for TV Violence Causing Real Violence", Jonathan Freedman, a professor of psychology
at the University of Toronto and author of "Media Violence and Its Effect on Aggression: Assessing
the Scientific Evidence", discusses how television violence, claimed by the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC), does not cause real–world aggression among adolescents. The
FCC determined to restrict violent television programming to late night hours ... Show more content

Freedman argues that this concept, from the FCC, strictly bases their claim on intuition, not
scientific research. Freedman writes, "Ultimately, it is the findings that matter–not what people think
about them or tell you about them" (Par. 8). There is not enough evidence to understand and know
the effects of media coverage of real violence, and how fictional violence affects real–world
scenarios.
Evaluation #1
Television violence is not necessarily the problem with real–world violence in today's society, nor is
"violent" video games, or explicit rap music. United States violence increased between the 1960's to
1980's, but has dropped dramatically, especially violent crimes committed by young men, since
1992 (Freedman Par. 10–11). Although media violence is increasing, world violence is decreasing;
there has to be a reputable and scientific explanation on why these children are committing violent
real–world crimes. There have been less than one–hundred experiments completed on this topic of
choice, and possible evidence that observer bias may affect these experiments. The FCC purposely
schedule "violent" or "provocative" televisions shows during evening hours of the night for a reason.
Parents of young children, from ages seven through fourteen, should not allow their children to
watch these so–called "violent" television shows or play these "violent" video games. Certain
television programs have warning labels clearly stating that, some material is not suitable for

Negative Effects On Public Media
"Today the data linking violence in the television to violence in society are superior to those linking
cancer and tobacco"(Grossman 31). The digital revolution of television symbolizes that the
technological advances have taken the "lead" of modern society. The relation between children's
violent television viewing and their development is assignable in various ways. Research studies
raised some significant questions about this field and suggest the possible negative consequences
that televised violence could bring to the youth. As the most common and popular public media,
television deserved society's critical attention on its detrimental effects among children. People who
is responsible for major consequences should be attacked by actions such as allowing or profiting
inappropriate images on children's programs, which can cause both physical and psychological
problems to the youth viewers and even lead to criminal behaviors. Violent images on children's
television programs should be discern as the complex interplay that lead to major consequences in
children's future development. Nowadays, under the exposure of television, aggressive images are
often shown and even suggested in children's shows or cartoons. Aggressive actions involving
animated characters are easy to caught youngsters' attention. Professor Chris Boyatzis , a member of
the Cal State Fullerton Child Development Department, further proved by expressing that, "Violent
cartoons have been a staple of

Violence On The Rise Of Contemporary Society
Violence on the Rise Contemporary society has evolved around materialism due to an incessant rise
of scientific and technological innovations. While some may argue man is living in the most
peaceful era in American history, the incline of man's tendency to value material possessions above
spiritualism has effectively caused an erosion of general morality, a revision of social normalization,
and an increase in violent actions. Children are the leading advocates in this societal evolution.
Patently, their breeding is exposed to more distinguished violent content in films and in video
games. Equally, a fixation on their cellular device and its uncensored social media have become the
sources of man's elevating violence. Certainly the upbringing of twenty–first century children does
not emulate the upbringing of twentieth century children. Culture's newfound embracement of
technology has left violent material predisposed to the underdeveloped brain of a child. Movies and
video games labeled as PG–13 now are beginning to resemble the content of rated R movies in a
previous generation. Much of the violence is "cartoonishly sterilized and bloodless" to ensure a
rating that attracts the youthful population (Bozdech). Surely, children are viewing irresponsible
projections of conflicts that undermine the austerity and ramifications of sincere violence. They
grow to become desensitized by violence, understanding it to be an ordinary occurrence and often
the solution to a problem.

No Clear Link Between TV Violence and Aggression Essay
No Clear Link Between Television Violence and Aggression
There is a great deal of speculation on the role of television violence in
childhood aggression. Research demonstrates there may be other intervening
variables causing aggression. These variables include IQ, social class, parental
punishment, parental aggression, hereditary, environmental, and modeling. With
all of these factors to taken into consideration it is difficult to determine a
causal relationship between television violence and aggression. It is my
hypothesis this relationship is bi–directional – violent television
causes aggressive behavior and aggressive people tend to watch more violent
television.

Subjects in the aggression condition reproduced a good deal of physical and
verbal aggressive behavior resembling that of the models. The data clearly
confirmed the prediction that exposure of subjects to aggressive models
increases the probability of aggressive behavior (Bandura et al. 1961). Another
study sought to determine the extent to which film– mediated aggressive models
may serve as an important source of imitative behavior. Children were divided
and then exposed to four different aggression models. A real–life aggression
condition, a human film– aggression condition, a cartoon film–aggression
condition, and a control group. The results showed that exposure to humans on
film portraying aggression was the most influential in eliciting aggressive
behavior. Subjects in this condition, in comparison to the control subjects,
exhibited more aggression and more imitative aggression. Subjects who viewed
the aggressive human and cartoon models on film exhibited almost twice as much
aggression as subjects in the control group. These results provide strong
evidence that exposure to filmed aggression heightens aggressive reactions in
children (Bandura et al. 1963a). These results add to the conclusion that

Mass Shooting In Schools
Mass shootings have become one of the most fearful events that could happen in elementary
schools, high schools, and College campuses. These violent actions committed by a number of
individuals have happened for many years and will continue happening unless prevented.
Individuals like James Holmes opened fire in a Colorado movie theater, killing twelve individuals
and injuring twenty, John Sawahri shot five students dead in Santa Monica College also injuring
four individuals. However Eric Harris and Dylan Kleibold executed the most horrific act of school
violence in United States History. These two individuals managed to take the lives of twelve
students, a teacher and managed to take their own life in the process. This act of crime has spread
through America, leaving no one safe. These crimes have occurred not too long ago and can easily
happen in the future. As a community, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No one just wakes up one day to realize they became a criminal; this process generally takes a long
and slow build. Guns opened to those who really should not have them can be seen as one of the
main reasons as to why mass shootings exist all around America. Investigators should find a way to
keep these killing machines away from those who should not have them. Living with a abusive
family and not getting any attention when a person needs it the most can also cause one to build hate
towards others. Always entertained by violent movies and video games will cause a child's brain to
think that the world mirrors the violence they obtain from these games and movies. What happens in
the games can also happen in the real world, especially when violent games are involved. Searching
for revenge or simply seeking for attention are also reasons to mass shootings. All of this buildup in
an individual's life can cause a child to grow up into having a mind of a criminal. However,
solutions to stop this from occurring are

Violent Sports Research Paper
Why have sports become a source of anger, divisiveness, and violence? Although sports fans wield
the power to grow and popularize a sport, they can also prove to be severely detrimental towards a
sport. Whether it's deterring a potential fan from following a particular team or inciting violence
among fans, the deplorable behavior of various groups of sports fans has caused sports leagues to
take preventative measures to ensure the safety and well being of both fans and athletes. Sporting
arenas, establishments that televise sporting events, and the internet have all succumbed to the
horrendous actions perpetrated by these fans. Furthermore, the hostile behavior of the worst sports
fan hijack the rich cultural exchange and camaraderie that comes from sports. Understanding the
behaviors of the worst sports fans, will assist people in recognizing which fans they should avoid.
"Hipster" sports fans are one of the most unsociable sports fans on account of their resentment
towards new fans who decide to follow their sports team. "Hipster" fans feel entitled to their team
because they have been following the team for a longer period of time. For instance, when a sports

The Role Of Media And Its Functionality
Introduction
In an effort to understand the media and its functionality, it is my belief that one needs to go back to
inception to get a fair understanding. The twentieth century was an era that saw an explosion of
mass media however, prior to the late 1980s; the only form of mass media that was prominent of
that time was literature. It was noted that back in these times, the average person had to get by with
music and oral storytelling or live action media through the form of plays or even gladiatorial
combats (Ferguson 2013). In light of the above, one might argue that mass media back in the day
experienced a little flourish, for instance the proliferation of theaters in Greek civilization or
Coliseum games in Rome. Nonetheless, it would be safe to say that mass media that we have come
to know today, is a comparatively modern phenomenon, due to the fact, that modern mass media
differs gravely from its historical antecedents but more with regard to technology rather than
content. Business dictionary defines media as the communication channels through which news,
entertainment, education, data, or promotional messages are disseminated. This is inclusive of every
broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, billboards,
direct mail, telephone, fax, and internet. This definition simply highlights the reality that the media
is so vast and complex that it is impossible to sum up what it is in a few words.
Thus, on the basis of the above, it is

The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead
AMC's gritty and gruesome apocalyptic hit "The Walking Dead" places the blood thirsty, agonized
groans of zombies right in our living rooms. The show follows a small group of survivors in the
midst of a zombie apocalypse that has decimated some seventy–five percent of the population. The
cable series which first premiered in 2010 made no bones about its weekly offering of flesh–eating,
blood–splattered gore. The opening sequence of the pilot episode features a virus–ridden little girl
being thrust into the pavement when former sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) shoots a bullet
into her skull as he struggles to ward off her flesh–hungry zombie attack. "The Walking Dead" has
since amassed quite the following of fans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perhaps the biggest fear, however, concerning viewership of "The Walking Dead" is the possibility it
has of eschewing one's moral compass. Viewers continually watch protagonist Grimes and his
cohorts violently kill and maim the walking dead without pause and vice versa. It leads one to
wonder, if this prolonged exposure to killing without thought can also increase one's own ability to
exercise uncivil behavior without hesitation or remorse. If a society's values are represented in what
that society chooses to watch, should we be concerned that our viewing choices revolve around
barbaric killer instincts? One too, however, could take the opposite look at what violent, post
apocalyptic television, particularly "The Walking Dead", reflects about our society. Many critics
argue that "The Walking Dead" is ultimately a tale of one man's struggle to create peace and unity
for his family amidst a world of terror and strife. Our society's interest in disaster and cataclysm is
likely synonymous with our feelings of isolation and duress omnipresent in this modern and
technological age. The violence shown in "The Walking Dead"–the fight for survival, the loneliness,
the internal struggles the characters face in response to the violence–can be compared to the
challenges humans face every day.
In this society in which modernism distances humans from nature, each other, and often a
connection to what is genuinely important, it is easy to feel as though we are living in a dark

Essay on Media Violence and The Effects on Children
Does media violence have a negative effect on children?
On September 11th, 2001, millions around the world crowded around televisions across the globe,
watching the horrific scenes of terrorism that had struck New York City, Washington, D.C and
Pennsylvania on that ill–fated and now infamous morning. Our sense of security and impenetrable
protection crashed 110 stories to the shaken streets of New York City. We watched with shock and
horror, disbelief and grief as the images were repeatedly flashed before our eyes, with the all the
drama of the plane crashing through the World Trade Center and bursting into an indescribable ball
of fire and of the surreal scenes of demolished piles of what used to be the Twin Towers of New
York City. We ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Government official and scientific experts agreed that the trauma incited by these images was
detrimental to children. President Bush expressed his concern for the mental scars that could likely
be inflicted upon children as a result of this prevalence of terrorism and violence in the media. It is
apparent then that experts concur; the violent images permeating the media could likely have a
negative effect on children, causing them to feel unsafe, and to live in fear for their own lives and
those of their loved ones. In an interview with CNN, Dr. Jeffrey Mitchell reported that:
Children neurologically are not well suited to deal with extremes of trauma, so when they see this
kind of stuff, right now it may look like some the movies they have seen on television. Except in
this case people don't get up and act in the next (movie). In this case they're injured because they're
injured or they're dead because they're dead. So it can be very traumatizing for children to see these
images on TV.
They don't understand what this is all about...So that's why I'm suggesting that we not allow an
excessive amount of TV for children at this particular point (Mitchell, 2001).
The news is not the only source of violence for children. Our fictional television programming is

"There was murderers going around killing lots of people and stealing

watching the evening news on television. The eight year old girl claims
that she is afraid "when there is a murder near because you never know if
he could be in town" (Cullingford, 61). A recent report from the National
Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) pools evidence from over 2,500 studies

The media argument that high ratings
correspond with the public's best interest is simply not valid. Even the
American Medical Association agrees that the "link between televised
violence and later aggressive behavior warrants a major organized cry of
protest from the medical profession" (Palmer, 122). The issue of the
public's infatuation with television can be paralleled with that of a young
child and his desire for candy and "junk foods." The child enjoys eating
such foods, though they produce the harmful effects of rotting away at his
teeth. With a parent to limit his intake of such harmful sweets, however,
the child is protected from their damage. Similarly, the American public
desires to view violent programs at the risk of adapting induced aggressive
behaviors. Because the networks refuse to act as a "mother," and to limit
the amount of violence shown on television, there are no restrictions to
prevent television's violent candy from rotting away at the teeth of
society.
Harry Skornia claims that "it is naive and romantic to expect a

"We do not believe there is anything sexist or violent about the World Wrestling Federation. I think

3. TV is a World of Good and Bad
Even though both criminals and cops can both commit justifiable violence –– television is still a
simple medium. TV presents "good guys" and "bad guys." On average, there are 15 minutes of
commercials for every one hour of TV programming, so producers only have a short amount of time
in which to establish plot, story, characters and resolution. Good characters and bad characters must
be quickly and simply established.
"Deeper, more realistic, more ambiguous characterizations make it hard for viewers to know who to
root for. It also requires more screen time that takes away from on screen action," states the Center
for Media Literacy. "As a result, TV and film criminals are reduced to caricatures. They are l00%
bad. No one could care about them. They have no families. Many of them don't even have full
names, only nick names. They deserve no sympathy and they get what they deserve."
The bad guys, whether they are cops or robbers, have to be 100% bad to justify the violence against
them. Television violence is the struggle of good versus evil. It's OK to shoot the bad guy –– after
all, he's the "bad guy."
According to the study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, the most violent show observed
in 1999 was CBS' Walker, Texas Ranger. This show "took the top spot for overall violence with a

Media Violence For The Canadian Radio Television And...
For a child, almost any type of conflict, such as a heated discussion on a radio talk show or between
two experts during a newscast, may seem as aggressive as two comic book characters throwing
anvils. As of yet, we do not have a clear explanation of what causes violence and aggression in our
youth, whether we analyze media content or explore the everyday aggressive behavior that may
cause violent behavior, Individual studies define these notions in a lot of different ways; Thus, the
rules of the game are constantly changing for those who try to analyze the situation as a whole. The
difficulty in quantifying aggression and violence in ways that make it almost impossible to answer
the following question: "Does violence in the media cause people to commit acts of violence? "
In 1994, Andrea Martinez of the University of Ottawa conducted a thorough review of the scientific
literature on media violence for the Canadian Radio–television and Telecommunications
Commission (CRTC). She concluded that: "the lack of consensus is caused by three "gray areas" in
this type of research". These gray areas still apply today.
First, it is very difficult to define and measure violence in the media. Some experts who follow
violence in television programs, such as the late George Gerbner, defined violence as the act (or
threat) of hurting or killing another person, regardless of the method used or the surrounding
context. As such, Mr. Gerber included cartoon violence in his data set. But

There has been far–reaching research on the link between televised violence and violent behavior
amongst adolescents. Current studies have shown a direct correlation between aggressive conduct
and watching violence depicted in many media services and suggest that media is a variable that put
children at risk of aggressive behavior (Huesmann, Moise–Titus, Podolski, & Eron, 1992).
According to the American Psychological Association, watching playing violent scenes them on

Many argue that media violence is at least partly to blame for the school shootings in Littleton,
Colorado, Taber, Alberta and Erfurt, Germany.
Proponents of the idea that violence depicted on both television and video games affects the
behavior of children state that, contrary to other beliefs, these scenes teach a higher sense of the
justification of the use of violence in different situations (Tompkins, 2003). It teaches that violence
is a correct avenue to solve differences, which is not an acceptable action within real life situations.
The classic setting of using violence for a virtuous cause may interpret in daily life into a validation
for using violence to even the score against supposed victimizers. Consequently, defenseless youth
who have been maltreated may be tempted to use aggressive means to resolve problems.
The hero in most of these scenes also teaches them that violence has no consequences because
he/she never gets in trouble for their actions. Most psychologists agree that experiences teach
children during their early years and have a longstanding effect on their lives. Toddlers between the
ages of eighteen to sixteen months are intelligent enough to comprehend the significance of the

acted violence since their link between dream and actuality is still not strong. Furthermore, toddlers

Stricter Laws on Gun Holding Permits
In the FBI's annual statistical report the city of Chicago had 500 homicides in 2012. According to
Geier (2012) "435 of them were committed with guns" (para. 2). These statistics goes under the
radar because authorities and the national media deem these murders gang related. Unfortunately, it
takes a mass shooting at a movie theater in Colorado; Along with a shooting at an elementary school
in Connecticut, that killed almost a whole kindergarten class to bring light to the situation.
Furthermore, there have been several other shootings and a trend that will continue to happen if
serious measures are not taken. In the late 80's and early 90's the influx of drugs and violent crimes
in certain areas of the country forced to create the Violent Crime Control and law Enforcement Act
of 1994. One of the laws in the act was the restriction of certain "assault weapons with specific
combat features, copy cat models and high capacity ammunition magazines" a part of the law that
has since expired (Department of Justice Fact sheet, 1994 para 2). Although this law might have felt
like an inadequate solution to some, it was still a response to an overwhelming crisis. Theirs ways to

Disinhibition hypothesis also suggest that aggression in viewers might be stimulated by on screen

which stays with them for a period of time. According to Strasburger and Wilson, (2009) this is a
process known as 'cognitive priming', whereby violent stimuli can elicit aggressive motor tendencies

The Effects Of Rap Music On Social Behavior Essay
In society today, it is highly noticed that the role of rap music messages and video images of
violence causes an increase in negative emotions, thoughts and behaviors which could lead to
violence amongst youth. Rap music has been at the center of concern in regards to the potential
harmful effect of violent media on social behavior amongst youth. This potential behavior could be
seen in the music video titled "Kim" by Eminem. In this music video, the storyline, language and
sound encourages hostile thoughts and feelings amongst its audience. In the music video, Kim
husband catches her cheating on him in their home with another man, while he is away. However,
when Marshall gets home and finds out that his wife is cheating on him, he gets upset, angry, and
abusive and becomes violent towards his wife Kim. He screams at her saying that, if she moves
again, he will "beat the shit out of her" (Line 11). Violence in rap music has increased in response to
the complex interplay of changing social conditions such as the elevated levels of youth violence in
the changing commercial practices within the music industry. Hence, the media influences violence
in four negative ways, which contributes immensely to anger amongst youth which leads to
aggressive behavior such as social violence, substance abuse, domestic violence, and negative
perceptions of women.

One of the biggest problems which the United States is faced with is juvenile crime. The reason

still have not found the main reason why juvenile's commit crimes. Some risk factors associated
with juvenile crime are poverty, repeated exposure to violence, drugs, easy access to firearms,
unstable family life and family violence, delinquent peer groups, and media violence. Especially the
demise of family life, the effect of the media on the juveniles today, and the increase of firearms

Another risk factor is the effect of the media on the juveniles of today. Before the time a child has
reached seventh grade, the average child has witnessed 8,000 murders and 100,000 acts of violence
on the television. There is no doubt that heavy exposure to televised violence is one of the causes of
aggressive behavior, crime and violence in society. Television violence affects youngsters of all
ages, of both genders, at all economic levels, and all levels of intelligence. Long–term childhood
exposure to television is a casual factor behind one half of the homicides committed by juveniles in
the United States.
The increased availability of guns has played a big part in escalating the number of crimes
committed by juveniles.
In Los Angeles juvenile delinquency cases involving weapon violation grew by 86% from 1988 to
1992, which was more then any other type of juvenile offense. According to a University of
Michigan study found that 270,000 guns accompany secondary school students to class daily. This is
startling because it shows how many more juveniles are carrying guns and the juvenile use of guns
in homicides has increased from 65 to 80 percent from 1987 to 1991.

The Effect of Violence in the Media on the Minds of...
At an undeveloped age, adolescents' minds are similar to sponges, they absorb everything they see
or hear, picking up on everything. However, we continue to let our youngsters watch the corruption,
viciousness, and the unsuitable linguistics frequently originated in the media today, but we don't turn
and blame ourselves, we blame the media they cultured it from. Why? As parents it's our
responsibility to filter what our children are exposed to. The media doesn't force the violence on the
young children, but they are setting standards for what children may think is ordinary behavior or
language. (Felson) Violence is found in almost everything anymore, regardless of the movie, show
or video games. There is some type of violence involved, and it's almost becoming "normal".
(Felson) With forcefulness being observed in animations, sports, sitcoms and dramas, it's likely to
make children believe that this type of behavior is adequate. "Psychologists have discovered that
elevated exposure of violent video games can be linked to delinquency, fighting at school, during
play time, as well as brutal criminal actions". (Felson) Although, it isn't only the violence on the
television that is to blame for portraying the violent behavior. All over the world, media is

exaggeration, but the idea is the same: violence comes streaming into our homes every single day

"If a 15–second commercial can prompt the viewer to buy (or vote)," Posch writes, "the 25 acts of

Within the media, there has been endless finger pointing to who's to blame for the violence on
television. Some executives claim they are only reflecting society, even though the evidence
collected suggests that society is reflecting them.
One major factor contributing to the aggressive behavior found in American citizens who watch
violence on television is the sheer amount of television they watch. The average American child
spends more time watching television than in the classroom––making the television an "electronic
teacher," actually teaching kids almost double the hours an actual teacher does by the time the child
graduates high school (Posch). With nearly 99% of American households having a television––
usually more than one––it's no wonder the amount of television watched in America has gone up
every year. A 1993 Neilsen report showed an average of 23 hours of TV per week for 2 to 11 year
olds and almost 22 hours per week by teenagers (Hepburn). But while the number of sets in the
home has increased, the amount of family viewing has decreased. Media Dynamics estimates that
approximately 52% of all television viewing is by one person (Hepburn). And with so many single
parents in America, the television becomes a babysitter of sorts. Many parents consider the

Essay about Media Violence
Television Perpetuates Violence
Bullets whizzing, knives twirling, fists flying –– not an uncommon sight on the television set of
today. From cartoons to sitcoms, television shows depict violent acts that go unpunished and contain
no painful consequences. This view of the world does not reflect reality nor does it teach our
children the values, morals or behaviors we constantly tell them to practice.
Many parents don't realize that their children view the most violence watching the most innocent of
shows. For example, Nickelodeon's "Loony Tunes," actually contains 80 acts of violence per hour
and prime–time shows register at 60 acts of violence per hour. Children's programs are the least

But not to worry, the coyote immediately stood back up, and the only apparent effect of the incident
was a few stars twirling around his head.
Children watch television and believe they can survive such occurrences, just like those on TV. For
example, in 1992 the most violent prime–time show, "Young Indiana Jones", registered 60 acts of
violence per hour. And, of course, the characters always returned the next week with no injuries or
damages. This gives young minds a sense that they, too, are indestructible. Hundreds of programs
contain characters with immortal attitudes. Attitudes that rub off on children.
Even more disturbingly, some children begin to view the world as mean and dangerous as it appears
on television. Preschoolers lack the cognitive ability to distinguish fact from fantasy, especially
because the vividness of television makes everything seem quite real. Crime is at least ten times
more prevalent on TV as in the real world.(2) But children, and society, have a good reason to be
worried. Half of North America's murders and rapes can be attributed, either directly or indirectly, to
television viewing. Many times the criminal simply copies a television or movie plot. TV represents
violence as an appropriate way to solve interpersonal problems, to avenge slights and insults, make
up for injustice, and get what you want out of life.
Studies have shown that violent television directly affects children by reinforcing aggressive
behavior. More

Argument Against Limiting Screen Time For Younger Children
eople would argue against limiting screen time for younger children. However some arguments can
be made for letting children watch television when they are very young. A poor mouse lost its youth
for the effects of overstimulation to be proven, and such a valiant sacrifice should not go in vain.
Along with the sacrifice of the mice that served under Dr. Christakis, our future citizens are having
their perceptions of reality augmented even before they go to preschool or kindergarten. Combined
with the attention deficit, these preconceived notions of different places can lead a school to have
some serious issues. The core issue with this is that it is very difficult to moderate a child 's viewing
of the television, playing of video games, or accessing of the Internet, especially because younger
people have more fluid of electronic devices. The benefits of caring for a child during its infancy,
instead of sticking it in front of a screen, outweigh whatever free time would be obtained by letting
the child experience over stimulation. Many of the people who deny that the media has an effect on
children 's violent behavior believe that the media is just seen as the main perpetrator because many
parents fear it more than other factors. The media 's ubiquitousness gives people everywhere one

Meaning a violent influence like fighting, cursing, and weapons can have a negative effect on the
child's behavior. When young boys watch violent television, the aggressive behavior that it may
influence, will only contribution to the increased aggression in their future. The movies, television
and even video games can influence aggressive behavior depending on the child. Violence in the
media inevitable, but this effects young boys in many ways, like causing aggressive behavior. So
exactly what does aggression mean that televised violence causing elementary school aged boys to
become. According to Michael Thomas from PBS Parent, "aggression is a forceful action, the
process of making attacks, hostile, injurious, or behavior caused by frustration" (Thompson, n.d.).
From this definition, it may make parent infer that all boys are aggression by how they play. This
would not be true. Boys are going to be boys, meaning that they will wrestle and play out TV show
scenes, so when boys play fight it does not always mean they are aggressive. Some signs that point
out aggression, Thomas states, include "physical fighting, name–calling, and rough–housing that
results in injury" (Thompson, n.d.). These acts are different from just playing, because the child, in
the sense, tries to hurt another child on purpose because they are not being heard or are
misunderstood and have

Violence Is Defined By Behavior Involving Physical Force

  • 1. Violence Is Defined By Behavior Involving Physical Force Did you know that one in four women has been physically abused? How would you feel if this one person was your best friend, your aunt, your grandmother or your mother? Words. Actions. Guns. Rifles. Bombs. Explosions. What do all these words have in common? Harm. Injury. Destruction. Violence. Violence is defined by behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. Did you know that this issue causes more than 1.6 million deaths worldwide each year? In fact, is one of the leading causes of death in all parts of the world for persons ages 15 to 44. There is a problem in the way human beings understand of the concept of violence. Many people believe that violence is directly linked with war..but in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Isn't it sad how such brutality is willingly accomplished? How Violent behaviour is pinpointed in every continent, country and city of the world. Why is it that when faced with anger, we have such a strong feeling to fight back in an overly aggressive manner. The news is full of stories about murders, kidnappings, terrorist attacks and wars. Many people have the idea that violence is the solution to everything, when in reality it is really the problem. But... may I remind you that violence is not necessarily inevitable. Have you ever thought of this? There is nowhere in our biology textbooks that states that such behaviour is innate. In fact, we do not have a DNA designated for violence. In fact, the only reasonable argument behind the fact that many believe war is inevitable is because we have caused it to become this way. Over the last few decades, worries have shifted. In 1970, children and teenagers worried that it was raining outside meaning they couldn't go to the park or to the municipal pool. But now, it is the fear of staying safe on your walk home from school or being able to travel safely for a family vacation. Today, children play with toy guns and watch television programs completely unsuitable for their age. What happened to the times when young children made Superman fly from one building to another. • 3. Media Violence Essay Does entertainment influence society's attitude towards violent behavior? In order to fully answer this question we must first understand what violence is. Violence is the use of one's powers to inflict mental or physical injury upon another; examples of this would be rape or murder. Violence in entertainment reaches the public by way of television, movies, plays, music, and novels. Through the course of this essay it will be proven that violence in entertainment is a major factor in the escalation of violence in society, once this is proven we will take all of the evidence that has been shown throughout this paper and come to a conclusion as to whether or not violence in entertainment is justified and whether or not it should be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In that same study other possible causes for the vast increases in violence were studied, the 'baby boom' effect, trends in urbanization, economic trends, trends in alcohol abuse, the role of capital punishment, civil unrest, the availability of guns, and exposure to television(Lamson 32). Each of these alleged causes was tested in a variety of ways to see whether it could be eliminated as a credible contributor to doubling the crime rate in the United States, and one by each of them was invalidated, except for television. Children average four hours of television per day, and in the inner city that increases to as much as eleven hours a day, with an average of eight to twelve violent incidents per hour. It is also interesting to note that violence occurs some fifty–five times more often on television than it does in the real world (Medved 156). FBI and census data show the homicide arrest rate for seventeen–year–olds more than doubled between 1985 and 1991, and the rates for fifteen–and sixteen–year–olds increased even faster. Movies also add their fair share to the problem of violence in society. Researchers have established that copycat events are not an anomaly. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Watching the World through Television Most of the world can be viewed through the television. Educational programs are aired. News from all over the world is broadcasted. Anything from sports to music is displayed on the television. While there are many positive aspects of mass media, to the contrary, there are also violent programs portrayed. Violence in all aspects of the media has drawn public attention with practically every novel type of media entertainment (Slotsve et al., 2008). With children being the main audience, this is a topic that has become highly debatable. Over the years more and more cases have come to light alleging television is the culprit to violence. Beginning in 1994, a three year study was conducted. This utmost recognized study of violence in television, the National Television Study, evaluated violence on the television (Slotsve et al., 2008). Through this study, a trend between violent and belligerent antisocial behavior was documented (Slotsve et al., 2008). The violence portrayed on the television can create footprints in the child's mind. The paths become a link to abnormal behavior patterns. In addition, the Surgeon General's Program of Research also identified a contributory linking between televised violence and antisocial behavior with children being more affected (Slotsve et al., 2008). The question still remains, is television a root for violent behavior? There are a few neurological effects that have been associated with long durations of televisions viewing. ... • 7. Examining the Behavior Between Media and Antisocial... Nowadays, aggressive and violent behaviour have been said to be caused by media violence in many researches. Media violence has been defined as "visual portrayals of acts of physical aggression by one human or human–like character against another" while violent behaviour is defined as overt and intentional physically aggressive behaviour against another person. I found that PsycINFO database from Ovid is useful and reliable as apart from providing clear reference details for every text, it highlights keywords in search results, and this really raise efficiency. The following three research papers are the most relevant sources for this topic. The increased public concern about the effects of violence displayed by different media, including ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Raw data was analysed with log–linear logistic regression analyses. The findings indicated that despite the existence of a history of aggressive behaviour, the hypothesis are supported. It was also consistent with the hypothesis that extensive television viewing helps to explain the association between certain environmental risks and subsequent aggressive behaviour, and also the bidirectional relationship between television violence and aggressive behaviour. The difference in the content of programs watched by males and females during adolescence and early adulthood is yet to be explored. There has been little research has tested the general effect of violent lyrics on aggressive behaviour while holding musical tone constant, even very little research directly comparing the effects of media violence presented through visual and auditory modes. This study was aimed to examine the effect of violent lyrics with musical tone held constant and compare the violent visual and auditory media effects. There were two hypotheses raised from this study: 1. Music–lyric combinations would arouse more aggression than music–alone or lyric–alone aggression. 2. Violent music lyrics, adding to any priming effects from violent visual media, would further increase the probability of aggressive behaviour. Participants in this study were 194 university students and staff (99 females, 85 males) most of whom were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Negative Impact of Media Violence on Children Violence in entertainment is as old as civilization itself. In the earlier centuries Romans would delight themselves by cheering on gladiators fought themselves to death. Dramatic theater was also full of jealousy, retribution, and violence. Although entertainment violence is not new it wasn't until the twentieth century that heavy doses of violence were made available to vastly everyone. Over the past one hundred years, as mass media has become more prevalent, it has also become more violent. In the earlier part of the twentieth century media such as motion pictures and radio provided entertainment for those who could afford them. Although these commodities were present few people considered them necessary for living. With the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obviously, if a child is typical, television plays a huge role in their lives. Literally thousands of studies since the 1950s have asked whether there is a link between exposure to violence and behavior. It is now understood by researchers that children learn new behaviors by direct experience or by imitating others in their social environment. Programs outfitted for children often contain more violence more violence than adult television. Most of the violent acts presented on television often go unpunished and are often accompanied by humor. The consequences of human suffering and loss are rarely depicted. This can lead young people to commit unknowingly and comically. Many shows glamorize violence and this is because television often promotes violent acts as a fun and effective way to get fulfill desired actions without receiving any form of punishment. It is even common for animated movies, digital video discs, and basic television labeled G– rated to contain violence. Even superheroes beating up villains exhibits a message that violence is normal and encourages. Many children will try to be like their favorite superhero and obtain the "good guy' role in their play unknowingly participating in violent behaviors. The Relationship Between Democracy And Civility Author Ken Burns (2011) describes the relationship between democracy and civility when he said, "But civility is essential to our ability as a nation to confront together difficult issues, even when we may disagree, and to continue to improve as a country" (National Constitution Center, 2011). Democracy and civility go hand in hand; without democracy, there wouldn't be civility and without civility there wouldn't be democracy. In a democracy, the model of dissent should be deliberation, yet the long and careful debate we once had has shifted towards violent measures to fulfill one's own needs. The model of dissent has transformed from deliberation to violence due impart, to the technological advancements throughout the world. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Albert Bandura, a renowned psychologist, studied how some behaviors are learned through imitation. He calls this the social learning theory. It is exemplified in his classic experiment called the 'Bobo' Doll Experiment. The children participating in the experiment were individually shown into a room with toys and then played with them for 10 minutes while "either, 1) 24 children (12 girls and 12 boys) watched a male or female model behaving aggressively toward a toy called a "Bobo Doll". The adults attacked the Bobo doll in a distinctive manner, either punching or kicking and in some cases using a hammer. 2) Another 24 children were exposed to a non–aggressive model who played in a quiet and subdued manner for 10 minutes. 3) The final 24 children were used as a control group and were not exposed to any model at all" (McLeod, 2011). In order to study whether these three situations had a different effect on the children, the experimenter subjected all the children to "mild aggression arousal" (McLeod, 2011) by taking each child separately to a room with toys. Once the child began to play with the toys, the experimenter "told the child that these were the experimenter's best toys and she had decided to reserve them for the other children" (McLeod, 2011). The experimenter then brought the child into the next room, which had some aggressive toys, such as a toy hammer, and some non–aggressive toys. For twenty minutes the child's ... • 13. Zombie Culture : The Dark Sides Of American Culture When one thinks about American culture or "the good life", things that are often thought of are: house in the suburbs, family, job, pets, etc. which is nothing extraordinary. It is what the typical American knows as everyday quiet life. For a culture that wishes nothing but simplicity and opportunity, it sure does feed on the "dark" aspects of its culture. For example, one of the dark sides of American culture is the presences of enthusiasm over the living dead. A rise in zombie culture in America could be due to the general morbid curiosity that many people hold. Americans want to connect with what they see through different forms of media such as television or music. Mimicking how some characters overcome obstacles could possibly help people discover more about themselves, and how "brain–thirsty" our world can be with the cold heartedness of people. In a show very popular right now, "The Walking Dead", many topics arise that people may also be going through. That may be why zombie culture is on the rise in American pop culture. People search for things that they don't have in their life to fulfill their desires because people naturally want a full and stable life. Although these zombie shows intrigue Americans, the opposing viewpoints say that violent films can increase hostile behavior. Many studies have been conducted on how media and hostile behavior are connected. Dale Archer points out that, "the results of a study done also indicated that aggressive behavior didn't ... • 15. Villain Or Scapegoat Living in a world full of crime and violence, people begin to wonder what the cause of the violence is and how it can then be prevented. Unfortunately, there is not a single root cause that can be found when people attempt to decipher why children are deciding to bring guns to school and murder their peers. Some may believe that it was influenced by being exposed to a hostile family, violent films, or gory video games. Although sometimes this might be the case, a lot of the time it is not as black and white, making this topic very difficult to analyze and understand. Both Jonathan L. Freedman in "Villain or Scapegoat? Media Violence and Aggression" and L Rowell Huesmann and Laramie D. Taylor in "The Role of Media Violence in Violent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Huesmann and Taylor then begin to define violence in its various forms and stages. This seemed to be slightly redundant and useless information since it is obvious and is not specific to the topic in question. The authors then begin to obtain the reader's attention as they begin to describe the issue faced by the youth having unlimited access to violence on television. A study done on children is then mentioned, where half of the group watches a violent movie and the other half a non–violent movie. The two groups of kids are then combined for a hockey game where levels of aggressive behavior are observed and compared. As expected, the research indicated that the kids who watched the violent movie demonstrated more violent behavior. The authors continue to point out the various influences that media violence is affecting the youth and studies that back up their arguments. Huesmann and Taylor then shift to another source of violent influence, videogames. The various ratings categories of video games, Everyone, Teen, and Mature, are mentioned and the fact that all three of them allow some sort of violence. It is mentioned that the Teen category consists of roughly 94% violent games which is astonishing. As a parent, of three children it can be hard to know if your child misbehaves at school. If you hear that your child is acting out, whether it's a comment written in his or her agenda or a report card or something mentioned to you in a parent–teacher conference, how do you know if it is a one–time problem or a constant behavioral issue? I recall in 1999 the month of April. The United States had its first crisis in a school setting. Many children are bringing guns, knives, and even bombs to school. Why? Do they hate their teachers that badly? Is someone bullying them? Why are these things happening in the schools? A school is a place where children can go to be educated. I feel that since God has been taken out of the equation, trouble has found its way into our schools across the country. Child's behavior is worse today than it was ten years ago. Adults influence children by stating their expectations for desired behavior and helping children understand that there are boundaries, or limits, on behavior. Authoritative caregivers understand the importance of proper boundaries in relationships in general, and appropriate limits in an adult–child relationship in particular. They figure out and clearly communicate limits that will be most helpful in encouraging children to behave ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, it is only small percentage of the population across the globe that plays sports in professional manner (Holowchak & Reid 2013). The question as to whether children should be allowed to play violent sports is usually asked by many people on daily basis. Some sports tend to be fast paced and physical which makes them to be exciting and fulfilling. There are numerous positive impacts of playing and viewing sport activities. But some sports have a violent nature in them and they normally have psychological effect and can as well affect emotional and physical health (Delaney & Madigan 2009). Therefore, children should not play violent sports. Many adults and parents normally use this common phrase let them go and play it is healthy. Video Game Playing Essay Video Game Playing Video Game Playing and its Effects on Personality and Behavior in relation to Aggression In recent years, technological advances have introduced many new forms of entertainment, one of the most popular being video games. Since their introduction, professionals and parents have become concerned with the addictive power that video games can have on people, particularly children and adolescents. Today, concern has shifted from the addictive effects of video game playing to the possible effects that they have on players' aggression levels. C. Braun and J. Weinstein (1985) studied the relationship of heavy video game use in adolescent male subjects to personality and psycho–pathological factors. They hypothesized that video game playing is positive in the sense that it releases pent–up aggressive energies. They felt that after playing a video game, adolecents should feel more relaxed, having invested so much energy, whereas those who never, or rarely play video games would not. They also hypothesized that video games are particularly suited to low frustration tolerance adolescents because of video games' nature of immediate feedback. (As opposed to discharging aggression through sports, for example, in which the results are delayed from one's particular effort.) Video games also protect the adolescent from ridicule, or social stress factors since they can play by themselves and not be subject to external judgement. Teenagers are exposed to crude indecent language, sexual activity, and graphic violence just by turning on the television. Teens around the ages of fifteen or sixteen are at the age were most parents are not very strict about what they watch on television compared to a five or six year old. If parents are not really concerned with what teens around this age are watching on television most likely the teen has freedom to view very graphic content. So how is this content affecting teenagers? Are teenagers copying what they observe on television or is the violent content somehow influencing teens? Literature Review There have been previous studies done on the link between television violence and aggression in adolescents. In the article, "Connections Between Violent Television Exposure and Adolescent Risk Taking", authors Marina Krcmar, University of Connecticut Department of Communication Sciences, and Kathryn Greene, Rutgers University Department of Communication use a survey to assess television viewing and risk–taking behaviors in 717 adolescents ages 11–22. In order to better understand the media violence debate a clear definition of violence, or aggression, must be established. However, one of the reasons that the heated discussion over media violence even exists is because of the difficulty in accomplishing this task. • 31. Protecting Children from Television Violence Essays Summary #1 Television violence, and media violence in general, has been a controversial topic for several years. The argument is whether young children are brainwashed into committing violent real–world crimes because of violent and pugnacious behavior exposed in mass media. In his article "No Real Evidence for TV Violence Causing Real Violence", Jonathan Freedman, a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto and author of "Media Violence and Its Effect on Aggression: Assessing the Scientific Evidence", discusses how television violence, claimed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), does not cause real–world aggression among adolescents. The FCC determined to restrict violent television programming to late night hours ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Freedman argues that this concept, from the FCC, strictly bases their claim on intuition, not scientific research. Freedman writes, "Ultimately, it is the findings that matter–not what people think about them or tell you about them" (Par. 8). There is not enough evidence to understand and know the effects of media coverage of real violence, and how fictional violence affects real–world scenarios. Evaluation #1 Television violence is not necessarily the problem with real–world violence in today's society, nor is "violent" video games, or explicit rap music. United States violence increased between the 1960's to 1980's, but has dropped dramatically, especially violent crimes committed by young men, since 1992 (Freedman Par. 10–11). Although media violence is increasing, world violence is decreasing; there has to be a reputable and scientific explanation on why these children are committing violent real–world crimes. There have been less than one–hundred experiments completed on this topic of choice, and possible evidence that observer bias may affect these experiments. The FCC purposely schedule "violent" or "provocative" televisions shows during evening hours of the night for a reason. Parents of young children, from ages seven through fourteen, should not allow their children to watch these so–called "violent" television shows or play these "violent" video games. • 33. Negative Effects On Public Media "Today the data linking violence in the television to violence in society are superior to those linking cancer and tobacco"(Grossman 31). The digital revolution of television symbolizes that the technological advances have taken the "lead" of modern society. The relation between children's violent television viewing and their development is assignable in various ways. Research studies raised some significant questions about this field and suggest the possible negative consequences that televised violence could bring to the youth. As the most common and popular public media, television deserved society's critical attention on its detrimental effects among children. People who is responsible for major consequences should be attacked by actions such as allowing or profiting inappropriate images on children's programs, which can cause both physical and psychological problems to the youth viewers and even lead to criminal behaviors. Violent images on children's television programs should be discern as the complex interplay that lead to major consequences in children's future development. Nowadays, under the exposure of television, aggressive images are often shown and even suggested in children's shows or cartoons. • 35. Violence On The Rise Of Contemporary Society Violence on the Rise Contemporary society has evolved around materialism due to an incessant rise of scientific and technological innovations. While some may argue man is living in the most peaceful era in American history, the incline of man's tendency to value material possessions above spiritualism has effectively caused an erosion of general morality, a revision of social normalization, and an increase in violent actions. Children are the leading advocates in this societal evolution. Patently, their breeding is exposed to more distinguished violent content in films and in video games. Equally, a fixation on their cellular device and its uncensored social media have become the sources of man's elevating violence. Certainly the upbringing of twenty–first century children does not emulate the upbringing of twentieth century children. Culture's newfound embracement of technology has left violent material predisposed to the underdeveloped brain of a child. Movies and video games labeled as PG–13 now are beginning to resemble the content of rated R movies in a previous generation. Much of the violence is "cartoonishly sterilized and bloodless" to ensure a rating that attracts the youthful population (Bozdech). Surely, children are viewing irresponsible projections of conflicts that undermine the austerity and ramifications of sincere violence. Although sports fans wield the power to grow and popularize a sport, they can also prove to be severely detrimental towards a sport. Whether it's deterring a potential fan from following a particular team or inciting violence among fans, the deplorable behavior of various groups of sports fans has caused sports leagues to take preventative measures to ensure the safety and well being of both fans and athletes. Sporting arenas, establishments that televise sporting events, and the internet have all succumbed to the horrendous actions perpetrated by these fans. • 44. The Role Of Media And Its Functionality Introduction In an effort to understand the media and its functionality, it is my belief that one needs to go back to inception to get a fair understanding. The twentieth century was an era that saw an explosion of mass media however, prior to the late 1980s; the only form of mass media that was prominent of that time was literature. It was noted that back in these times, the average person had to get by with music and oral storytelling or live action media through the form of plays or even gladiatorial combats (Ferguson 2013). In light of the above, one might argue that mass media back in the day experienced a little flourish, for instance the proliferation of theaters in Greek civilization or Coliseum games in Rome. Nonetheless, it would be safe to say that mass media that we have come to know today, is a comparatively modern phenomenon, due to the fact, that modern mass media differs gravely from its historical antecedents but more with regard to technology rather than content. Business dictionary defines media as the communication channels through which news, entertainment, education, data, or promotional messages are disseminated. This is inclusive of every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, billboards, direct mail, telephone, fax, and internet. This definition simply highlights the reality that the media is so vast and complex that it is impossible to sum up what it is in a few words. Thus, on the basis of the above, it is ... Perhaps the biggest fear, however, concerning viewership of "The Walking Dead" is the possibility it has of eschewing one's moral compass. Viewers continually watch protagonist Grimes and his cohorts violently kill and maim the walking dead without pause and vice versa. It leads one to wonder, if this prolonged exposure to killing without thought can also increase one's own ability to exercise uncivil behavior without hesitation or remorse. If a society's values are represented in what that society chooses to watch, should we be concerned that our viewing choices revolve around barbaric killer instincts? One too, however, could take the opposite look at what violent, post apocalyptic television, particularly "The Walking Dead", reflects about our society. Many critics argue that "The Walking Dead" is ultimately a tale of one man's struggle to create peace and unity for his family amidst a world of terror and strife. Our society's interest in disaster and cataclysm is likely synonymous with our feelings of isolation and duress omnipresent in this modern and technological age. In an interview with CNN, Dr. Jeffrey Mitchell reported that: Children neurologically are not well suited to deal with extremes of trauma, so when they see this kind of stuff, right now it may look like some the movies they have seen on television. Good characters and bad characters must be quickly and simply established. "Deeper, more realistic, more ambiguous characterizations make it hard for viewers to know who to root for. For a child, almost any type of conflict, such as a heated discussion on a radio talk show or between two experts during a newscast, may seem as aggressive as two comic book characters throwing anvils. As of yet, we do not have a clear explanation of what causes violence and aggression in our youth, whether we analyze media content or explore the everyday aggressive behavior that may cause violent behavior, Individual studies define these notions in a lot of different ways; Thus, the rules of the game are constantly changing for those who try to analyze the situation as a whole. Current studies have shown a direct correlation between aggressive conduct and watching violence depicted in many media services and suggest that media is a variable that put children at risk of aggressive behavior (Huesmann, Moise–Titus, Podolski, & Eron, 1992). According to the American Psychological Association, watching playing violent scenes them on games and television, can desensitize children to the suffering and pain of others and may be a greater risk of acting aggressively toward others and they're less bothered by violence in general and less likely to see anything wrong with it. Studies disclose that children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many argue that media violence is at least partly to blame for the school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Taber, Alberta and Erfurt, Germany. Proponents of the idea that violence depicted on both television and video games affects the behavior of children state that, contrary to other beliefs, these scenes teach a higher sense of the justification of the use of violence in different situations (Tompkins, 2003). It teaches that violence is a correct avenue to solve differences, which is not an acceptable action within real life situations. The classic setting of using violence for a virtuous cause may interpret in daily life into a validation for using violence to even the score against supposed victimizers. Consequently, defenseless youth who have been maltreated may be tempted to use aggressive means to resolve problems. The hero in most of these scenes also teaches them that violence has no consequences because he/she never gets in trouble for their actions. Most psychologists agree that experiences teach children during their early years and have a longstanding effect on their lives. Toddlers between the ages of eighteen to sixteen months are intelligent enough to comprehend the significance of the programs (Tompkins, 2003) that they watch and respond in the same manner to both actual and acted violence since their link between dream and actuality is still not strong. • 59. Stricter Laws on Gun Holding Permits In the FBI's annual statistical report the city of Chicago had 500 homicides in 2012. According to Geier (2012) "435 of them were committed with guns" (para. 2). These statistics goes under the radar because authorities and the national media deem these murders gang related. Unfortunately, it takes a mass shooting at a movie theater in Colorado; Along with a shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, that killed almost a whole kindergarten class to bring light to the situation. Furthermore, there have been several other shootings and a trend that will continue to happen if serious measures are not taken. In the late 80's and early 90's the influx of drugs and violent crimes in certain areas of the country forced to create the Violent Crime Control and law Enforcement Act of 1994. One of the laws in the act was the restriction of certain "assault weapons with specific combat features, copy cat models and high capacity ammunition magazines" a part of the law that has since expired (Department of Justice Fact sheet, 1994 para 2). Although this law might have felt like an inadequate solution to some, it was still a response to an overwhelming crisis. Theirs ways to confront this situation without completely infringing on an individuals second amendment rights. Strengthening laws that we already have implemented in the mental health community, and imposing stricter laws holding gun safety violators accountable can be an acceptable solution to an already difficult ... When people witness a violent media event, it activates thoughts or ideas about violence which stays with them for a period of time. According to Strasburger and Wilson, (2009) this is a process known as 'cognitive priming', whereby violent stimuli can elicit aggressive motor tendencies in a viewer. • 64. The Effects Of Rap Music On Social Behavior Essay In society today, it is highly noticed that the role of rap music messages and video images of violence causes an increase in negative emotions, thoughts and behaviors which could lead to violence amongst youth. Rap music has been at the center of concern in regards to the potential harmful effect of violent media on social behavior amongst youth. This potential behavior could be seen in the music video titled "Kim" by Eminem. In this music video, the storyline, language and sound encourages hostile thoughts and feelings amongst its audience. In the music video, Kim husband catches her cheating on him in their home with another man, while he is away. However, when Marshall gets home and finds out that his wife is cheating on him, he gets upset, angry, and abusive and becomes violent towards his wife Kim. He screams at her saying that, if she moves again, he will "beat the shit out of her" (Line 11). Violence in rap music has increased in response to the complex interplay of changing social conditions such as the elevated levels of youth violence in the changing commercial practices within the music industry. Hence, the media influences violence in four negative ways, which contributes immensely to anger amongst youth which leads to aggressive behavior such as social violence, substance abuse, domestic violence, and negative perceptions of women. • 66. Juvenile Crime Essay One of the biggest problems which the United States is faced with is juvenile crime. The reason experts feel juvenile's commit crimes is because of risk factors when they were younger but experts still have not found the main reason why juvenile's commit crimes. Some risk factors associated with juvenile crime are poverty, repeated exposure to violence, drugs, easy access to firearms, unstable family life and family violence, delinquent peer groups, and media violence. Especially the demise of family life, the effect of the media on the juveniles today, and the increase of firearms available today have played a big role in the increase of juveniles crimes. Before the time a child has reached seventh grade, the average child has witnessed 8,000 murders and 100,000 acts of violence on the television. There is no doubt that heavy exposure to televised violence is one of the causes of aggressive behavior, crime and violence in society. Television violence affects youngsters of all ages, of both genders, at all economic levels, and all levels of intelligence. Long–term childhood exposure to television is a casual factor behind one half of the homicides committed by juveniles in the United States. The increased availability of guns has played a big part in escalating the number of crimes committed by juveniles. In Los Angeles juvenile delinquency cases involving weapon violation grew by 86% from 1988 to 1992, which was more then any other type of juvenile offense. According to a University of Michigan study found that 270,000 guns accompany secondary school students to class daily. This is startling because it shows how many more juveniles are carrying guns and the juvenile use of guns in homicides has increased from 65 to 80 percent from 1987 to 1991. The possession of firearms plays a big cause in the delinquency of children and is playing a bigger role in the crimes which juveniles commit. • 70. The Effect of Violence in the Media on the Minds of... At an undeveloped age, adolescents' minds are similar to sponges, they absorb everything they see or hear, picking up on everything. However, we continue to let our youngsters watch the corruption, viciousness, and the unsuitable linguistics frequently originated in the media today, but we don't turn and blame ourselves, we blame the media they cultured it from. Why? As parents it's our responsibility to filter what our children are exposed to. The media doesn't force the violence on the young children, but they are setting standards for what children may think is ordinary behavior or language. (Felson) Violence is found in almost everything anymore, regardless of the movie, show or video games. There is some type of violence involved, and it's almost becoming "normal". (Felson) With forcefulness being observed in animations, sports, sitcoms and dramas, it's likely to make children believe that this type of behavior is adequate. "Psychologists have discovered that elevated exposure of violent video games can be linked to delinquency, fighting at school, during play time, as well as brutal criminal actions". (Felson) Although, it isn't only the violence on the television that is to blame for portraying the violent behavior. All over the world, media is influencing our behavior. Do you believe it's as powerful and influencing as many say it is? Without a doubt, the influence of media has been proven to affect our behavior. Coyote chasing the Roadrunner around a bend, only the Roadrunner turns, but our comedic––and usually stupid––villain doesn't. So, he falls from a height of what looks like about 500,000 feet, only to become a small puff of smoke at the bottom of the canyon. After all, if what happens to you when you fall from that height were to have happened to Mr. Coyote, that would have been a very short lived cartoon series. Maybe this example is an exaggeration, but the idea is the same: violence comes streaming into our homes every single day through our TVs not to be viewed, but to be devoured. It's been proven that sex and violence sell. For those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "If a 15–second commercial can prompt the viewer to buy (or vote)," Posch writes, "the 25 acts of violence per hour will likewise prompt the targeted viewers to similarly respond with violence." Within the media, there has been endless finger pointing to who's to blame for the violence on television. Some executives claim they are only reflecting society, even though the evidence collected suggests that society is reflecting them. One major factor contributing to the aggressive behavior found in American citizens who watch violence on television is the sheer amount of television they watch. The average American child spends more time watching television than in the classroom––making the television an "electronic teacher," actually teaching kids almost double the hours an actual teacher does by the time the child graduates high school (Posch). With nearly 99% of American households having a television–– usually more than one––it's no wonder the amount of television watched in America has gone up every year. A 1993 Neilsen report showed an average of 23 hours of TV per week for 2 to 11 year olds and almost 22 hours per week by teenagers (Hepburn). But while the number of sets in the home has increased, the amount of family viewing has decreased. Media Dynamics estimates that approximately 52% of all television viewing is by one person (Hepburn). And with so many single parents in America, the television becomes a babysitter of sorts. • 74. Essay about Media Violence Television Perpetuates Violence Bullets whizzing, knives twirling, fists flying –– not an uncommon sight on the television set of today. From cartoons to sitcoms, television shows depict violent acts that go unpunished and contain no painful consequences. This view of the world does not reflect reality nor does it teach our children the values, morals or behaviors we constantly tell them to practice. Many parents don't realize that their children view the most violence watching the most innocent of shows. For example, Nickelodeon's "Loony Tunes," actually contains 80 acts of violence per hour and prime–time shows register at 60 acts of violence per hour. Children's programs are the least likely to show negative and harmful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But not to worry, the coyote immediately stood back up, and the only apparent effect of the incident was a few stars twirling around his head. Children watch television and believe they can survive such occurrences, just like those on TV. For example, in 1992 the most violent prime–time show, "Young Indiana Jones", registered 60 acts of violence per hour. And, of course, the characters always returned the next week with no injuries or damages. This gives young minds a sense that they, too, are indestructible. Hundreds of programs contain characters with immortal attitudes. Attitudes that rub off on children. Even more disturbingly, some children begin to view the world as mean and dangerous as it appears on television. Preschoolers lack the cognitive ability to distinguish fact from fantasy, especially because the vividness of television makes everything seem quite real. Crime is at least ten times more prevalent on TV as in the real world.(2) But children, and society, have a good reason to be worried. Half of North America's murders and rapes can be attributed, either directly or indirectly, to television viewing. Many times the criminal simply copies a television or movie plot. TV represents violence as an appropriate way to solve interpersonal problems, to avenge slights and insults, make up for injustice, and get what you want out of life. Studies have shown that violent television directly affects children by reinforcing aggressive behavior. More ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Argument Against Limiting Screen Time For Younger Children eople would argue against limiting screen time for younger children. However some arguments can be made for letting children watch television when they are very young. A poor mouse lost its youth for the effects of overstimulation to be proven, and such a valiant sacrifice should not go in vain. Along with the sacrifice of the mice that served under Dr. Christakis, our future citizens are having their perceptions of reality augmented even before they go to preschool or kindergarten. Combined with the attention deficit, these preconceived notions of different places can lead a school to have some serious issues. The core issue with this is that it is very difficult to moderate a child 's viewing of the television, playing of video games, or accessing of the Internet, especially because younger people have more fluid of electronic devices. The benefits of caring for a child during its infancy, instead of sticking it in front of a screen, outweigh whatever free time would be obtained by letting the child experience over stimulation. Many of the people who deny that the media has an effect on children 's violent behavior believe that the media is just seen as the main perpetrator because many parents fear it more than other factors. The media 's ubiquitousness gives people everywhere one thing to look at and blame for the violence in their societies, because so much of what is in the media contains violence. This fear is mainly drawn out of parents lack of knowledge on how to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From this definition, it may make parent infer that all boys are aggression by how they play. This would not be true. Boys are going to be boys, meaning that they will wrestle and play out TV show scenes, so when boys play fight it does not always mean they are aggressive. Some signs that point out aggression, Thomas states, include "physical fighting, name–calling, and rough–housing that results in injury" (Thompson, n.d.).
