Social Inequality In The United States
Social inequality comes in many forms including things such as income, race, gender, and wealth. It
is something we can see in everyday life, yet there are some people that don't seem to think it exists,
or it at least isn't anything that they need to be concerned about because they're doing just fine. I
believe that they are wrong and that inequality affects us all in one way or another. It is something
that we need to come to grips with and deal with as a society and is not a problem that can be solved
on an individual basis.
Income inequality has come to the front as an issue over the past few years due to low–wage
workers demanding a raise in the minimum wage. While the United States remains one of the
richest countries in the world, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Supposedly our system is "progressive", which means that it is taxing higher incomes at higher
rates, but with all of the loopholes and tax breaks that those at the top can work around, a lot of the
lower classes actually end up paying more of a percentage of their income in taxes. Sales taxes and
payroll taxes also hit those income levels harder because, again, those end up being a larger amount
of their total income. For example, Kansas now has one of the nation's highest sales tax rates, at
6.5%, in the nation. Many localities have additional local taxes on top of that, making the total tax
rate upwards of 10% in some places. (Kansas Department of Revenue, 2015). A 10% sales tax is
going to make life a lot harder for someone who only brings home $600 a month than it is on
someone who brings home $4000 a month. Regressive taxes like this tend to hit the lower and
middle class harder so, if we want to improve income inequality we can move to reduce those. At
the federal level, congress can move to implement policies like I mentioned, along with others that
would make the system fairer and distribute wealth a little more

San Francisco Social Inequality Essay
Social Inequality of the Golden City The Golden Gate Bridge takes a curious traveler across the San
Francisco Bay area into a marvelous journey towards a technologically innovative city of San
Francisco. The city of San Francisco has forever been a national symbol of coveted opportunity,
cultural disapprobation, technological blossoming – and, frankly, economic inequality. In the past,
countless attempts were made by multiple scholars to identify the sources of San Francisco's social
inequality. Statisticians compiled large tomes of data, while Sociologists wrote unending arrays of
books; all in efforts to understand the basis of social inequality in the Golden City. Likewise, this
essay will begin by identifying early sources of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By and large, the war continued until 1848 – its victory awarded America with the new territory,
which marked the beginning of economic advancement of the west. Perhaps, 1848 also marked the
beginning of social inequality.
Upon the discovery of gold in California, thousands of fortune–dwellers migrated to San Francisco.
In fact, the population of San Francisco increased from 450 in 1848 to a colossal size of 25,000 by
the end of 1949 (SFgenealogy 2017). Incidentally, multiple gold mining towns were erected across
San Francisco. The new towns grew often in the form of businesses, food courts, and even
entertainment facilities. Paradoxically, this historical nuance introduced the division of people by
class. Division of class in San Francisco, meant that individuals who initiated first business facilities
were now becoming wealthier by exploiting their lower–class counterparts. A tempting question
arises, who were those lower–class counterparts? A demographic report of 1853 provides nothing
unusual about the San Francisco's population: 98.3% of the population were white leaving the
remaining 1.7% to African–Americans, Indians, etc. (SFgenealogy 2017). However, a statistical
report by the Secretary of State to the California Legislature, sheds light onto the demographic
description mentioned above; "Figures for Hispanics were

Dan Ariely And Social Inequality
According to Dan Ariely, James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics, and
Bryan Stevenson, American lawyer and social justice activist, today's world is experiencing a huge
issue of society's growing inequality and one of the brightest examples of the inequality is the
America's justice system. The thing is that society is not aware of that kind of growing issue and
how it stacks up to the real stats.
In his video on TED, Dan Ariely reveals some new, surprising research on what we think is fair, as
far as how wealth is distributed over societies. One of his experiences showed a surprising result.
Americans "think that the bottom 20 percent has about 2.9 percent of the wealth, the next group has
6.4, so together it's slightly more than nine. The next group, they say, has 12 percent, 20 percent,
and the richest 20 percent, people think has 58 percent of the wealth" (Ariely, 2015). However, the
reality is slightly different. He said, "the bottom 20 percent has 0.1 percent of the wealth. The next
20 percent has 0.2 percent of the wealth. Together, it's 0.3. The next group has 3.9, 11.3, and the
richest group has 84–85 percent of the wealth" (Ariely, 2015). Dan Ariely presented a lot of
different researches, in which he showed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bryan Stevenson gave an example of his grandmother and how powerful she was, when he was a
kid. He described his grandmother, "she was tough, she was strong, she was powerful. She was the
end of every argument in our family. She was the beginning of a lot of arguments in our family"
(Stevenson, 2012). Stevenson made a strong conclusion that when we create the right kind of
identity, we can say things to the world around us that they don't actually believe makes sense. We
can get them to do things that they don't think they can do (Stevenson, 2012). He believes that
identity can really make you a powerful

Social Inequalities During The Gilded Age
During the 19th century, economic and social inequalities were at a peak. The Gilded Age yielded
many inventions and advancements that led to extreme wealth and power, but it also led to poverty
and despair. Both Sumner and George had theories of how poverty could have been eliminated, but
their points were sometimes on opposite spectrums. This paper will discuss how some points were
similar, but also very different in aspects to relieving poverty in the 19th century.
William Graham Sumner was a social Darwinist who said "it is impossible that the man with capital
and the man without capital should be equal. (Sumner,36)" Social Darwinists believed that evolution
of human society was just as evolution in nature. Governments should not interfere ... Show more

George's theory of having one sole tax for the land in its natural state can eliminate poverty.
Material and industrial progresses have led to higher rates of poverty. Large amounts of poverty are
seen in dense areas around these new industries in the city. Poverty will only continue to rise until
land is available for all to use. "This single tax would be so high it would prevent speculation.
(George,39)" This would allow both businessmen and urban working men to use this land equally.
These technological booms that create great wealth and power also bring about greater poverty and
downfall to many. Many are subject to injustice and their liberty is taken away from them. Liberty
to George is the choice to be able to pursue whatever dream you want without boundaries. George
says, "For Liberty means Justice, and Justice is the natural law. (George,41)" Monopolizations of
countless industries such as the railroads create injustice. By following the natural law of justice,
inequality would be extinguished. With new inventions and increasing populations, people fight for
the opportunity to make money and own land. This competition creates poverty for those who
cannot obtain capital. George believes that land prices should be so high, that people would not be
able to own land but would rather rent the land. His theory explains that progress is only good to
those who can achieve it due to inequality. Those who don't have a chance will remain in poverty
and poverty will continue to become worse. This contrasts Sumner's idea of survival of the fittest.
By giving to those who will not seek the opportunity to improve themselves, society will not

Durkheim Social Inequality
The video for my project1: Video/DVD analysis is about the social/individual inequality of our
society, and it will be focused on Durkheim's view. It is from the youtube.com, originally from Khan
academy for health and medicine contents. The video is about the social/individual inequality in our
society.
The video is briefly, but explained the details of social inequality depend on the social classes of our
society; upper class, middle class, and the lower (working) class and how it is that the resources in a
society are unevenly distributed. It is explaining how each classes are treated in education and
healthcare. One of them are the wealth distribution in the United States; the fact that Top 20% of US

His views can be divided into three different theories; the form of solidarity, Anomie, and the
division of labor. Durkheim explained that there are two different types of the social integration;
which is mechanical and organic solidarity. He explained that the mechanical solidarity forms a
group or community where people affiliate and feel the comfort by regulated by the shared rules and
the systems of beliefs, which is we call common conscience. The mechanical solidarity has a strong
social morality compare to organic solidarity. The organic solidarity is more like an opposite theory
of mechanical solidarity. The organic solidarity is the society that is more focused on individual's
values, performance in different tasks, and form a society that has less social morality with less
common conscience. Durkheim explained, as a society grows up, the division of labor increases and
become powerful. The mechanical and organic solidarity must exist in our society to keep the
balance between the inequality and equality. But at the same time, it also makes big distance
between the high class and working class and it is causing working class to feel devastated because
of the differences of advantages and disadvantages between the high class and working

Inequality : Global And Social Inequality
Inequality has been shown throughout American history and has affected various countries
including the United States. The two forms of inequality this paper will address are global and social
inequality. Social inequality refers to the distribution of resources based on socially defined
characteristics, while global inequality is the systematic differences in wealth and power between
countries. Children living in poverty don't have the same opportunities as those who live in a higher
income county. Discrimination, segregation, and unequal distribution of income and resources have
caused inequalities to form. These two types of inequality are still affecting our society today and
making it difficult for people to strive for a better future.
Inequality is different within different countries. High income countries are usually the ones that
were industrialized first. Industrializing is a process that began two hundred years ago in England
and later spread to the United States, Canada, and the rest of Europe. (World Bank, 2007). High
income countries have a large and growing amount of poor people, but unlike the lower income
countries they offer decent housing, adequate food, drinkable water, and other comforts. Some of
the middle income countries include: East and Southeast Asia, Middle East and North Africa, parts
of the Americas, and most of the oil–rich countries. These countries began to industrialize in the
twentieth century which have caused them to not be as developed

Social And Economic Inequalities Of Public Policy
Social and economic inequalities exist in the UK particularly because of discrimination and
prejudices resulting in unequal society lacking cohesion and unity. In 2008, a comprehensive
analysis to critically analyze and asses the level of social and economic inequality was conducted in
the UK, by Professor John Hills who chaired the National Equality Panel created by the government
to provide in–depth analysis on the subject.
The report presented by the National Equality Panel found out that public policy influenced the
outcome of social and economic inequality. For instance, the report showed that public policy
interventions aimed at curbing down the rising cases of inequality was effective. The report
specifically cited that the public policy intervention in 1980s were effective in reducing inequality
from rising.
Social and economic inequalities in the UK have been explicitly linked to 'politics of envy' which
further aggravates the problem rather than solving the problem. Research and debates have shown
that the widespread social and economic inequalities have been closely attributed to the fact that
most people seems to accept them as normal. Sociologists have cited the fact that people tend to
compare themselves with people of the same social class, preventing them to view the full range of
social and economic inequality that exists around them.
Market liberalization and free society are the building blocks of most liberal market economies
(LMEs) such as the UK;

Rawls Social Inequality
Furthermore, the second law of the John Rawls' Theory of Justice states that "social and economic
inequalities are to be arranged so that they are both (a) reasonably expected to be to everyone's
advantage, and (b) attached to positions and offices open to all" (60). No doubt, John Rawls second
principle of justice establishes social equality in the society and opens the door of opportunities to
every single individual, who wants to rise from his/her present miserable situation. But this law,
disrupts the socioeconomic balance in the society. In this case everybody wants to be in higher
positions to be reputed in the society and no one wants to be a poor or miserable. Rawl is suggesting
an equal distribution of wealth amongst the people to relish the freedom and equality. It disturbs the
monopoly and make an imbalance in the economic growth of the country. For example; Andrew
Gibson, in his political research finds that .... "Inequality of income and wealth is a driver of growth.
Income disparities are part of the ......price system and they are a form of free speech – invest here!"
(The Benefits of Wealth ......Inequality). Rawls is speaking about inequality which is absolutely
about material wealth and designations. He is also seeking equality on the professional basis,

Social Inequality In Brazil
Socioeconomic Inequality is known as one of the greatest issues to be solved in today's world.
Inequality rates were already alarming in undeveloped countries, however, the rapidness they are
increasing in first world nations as well, is concerning. This fact has enhanced diverse problems
such as poverty, criminality and social conflicts among others and I believe we cannot be indifferent
to that. . Being born and raised in Brazil, I've been exposed to social inequality since a young age.
Headlines about social inequality appeared every day on the news. Moreover, it was something that
I would see on a daily basis in my community, I would even be challenged to write about the topic
at school. Fortunately, I grew up among the Brazilian privileged

Social Inequality In Urbanization
Urbanization is a complex phenomenon that brought multitudes of diverse social groups together
into one central location. Suddenly cities began to overflow with new cultures and ethnicities that
gave communities vibrant characteristics and new life. People were able to access modern
conveniences and socially network among thousands of individuals, all within one city. The
economics of the city allowed for greater production and a thriving business system that promoted
politics and business. Products from all over the world could be accessible somewhere in the vast
cities that expanded across the United States. However, even from the beginning of this glorious
migration to cities, inequality was embedded in the social system of stigmas and prejudice for
minority populations (Gottdiener, M., Hutchison, R., & Ryan, M., 2015). As wealth and prosperity
consumed the dominating Caucasian population, inequality and disadvantage settled over minorities
such as Blacks and Latinos. Quickly, racial and ethic groups divided into segregated communities
within urban societies inner–cities. The pseudo blanket of "togetherness", as one community, was
hiding the disadvantages and biases that limited the growth of minority groups in economics,
society, and social mobility. Limitations were set by the dominating social groups that encouraged
discrimination and prejudice towards minorities (Gottdiener, 2015). Even after decades of civil
rights movements and freedom for all protests, little

Combating Social Inequality : Poverty
Combating Social Inequality
Social inequality is a global concern impacting not only the poorest nations, but also the most
economically advanced nations in the world. More alarming is the amount of separation between the
worlds' wealthiest and the worlds' poorest inhabitants, with the gap widening year after year. It is
estimated that between 17,000 and 22,000 children die each day due to poverty, and more than 1
billion people lack access to clean drinking water. Governments have implemented policies to help
bridge the gap of social inequalities between the different races and classes in an attempt to even the
playing field, politics and capitalism however have countered and, in some instances, nullified the
effectiveness of those policies. Research suggests that addressing education as the root cause of
social inequality, in lieu of ineffective policies that only benefit the affluent and social elite, is
essential in combating poverty levels, life expectancy, quality of life and overall social well–being.
The benefits of attaining higher levels of education are not limited to increased income levels and
increased career opportunities. A study conducted in Denmark spanning from 1987 to 2011
concluded that people with tertiary education levels had a considerable life expectancy advantage
over their primary and lower secondary education level peers (Brønnum–Hansen & Baadsgaard,
2012), with the gap in life expectancy increasing over the 25 year study. Another study concluded

Inequality In Terms Of Social Inequality
In terms of social division, according to Oxford (2013), "social mobility has fallen rapidly in many
country as inequality has grown." Oxford (2013) argues that the wealthy focus only on better
education and healthcare for their own families, rather than helping "public services or paying the
taxes to support them." If the division continues, then there will be a side of "social ills, including
violence, mental health, crime and obesity." Oxford (2013) also states that "unequal societies" not
only negatively affect the poor, but also affect the rich.
Environmental destruction, according to Oxford (2013), comes from inequality because the wealthy
"have been estimate to use as much as 10,000 times more carbon than the average US citizen."
There is also the issue of monopoly, where "resources like land and water" are reserved from
potential societal good. Resources become more "scarce." Oxford (2013) states that if societies were
more equal, then they would be better equipped to deal with natural disasters, as well as "carbon
emissions."
Equalitytrust.org has data that reveals patterns of the social costs of inequality. Inequality affects the
physical health United States. If there was a more equal United States, then people are predicted to
live almost a year, or more longer (The Equality Trust, 2014). Mental health is also a part of the
social costs. A more equal society would lead to an improvement of "five percent," or more in
mental health (The Equality Trust, 2014).

Social Inequality
Perspectives by conflict theorists in sociology suggest that the social, political, or material
inequality of a social group, are used as an instrument of oppression. Power is a concept that can be
explained by interactions between individuals and groups. The law is an instrument of oppression
used to maintain power and privilege(Henslin164) Social inequality can be seen as many different
things. The most common would be gender roles or discrimination by social stereotyping. They can
also be established through the unjust criminal justice system, health, and education. Inequalities
exist between race or religion groups, classes, and even countries, making this a worldwide
phenomenon. More often you would see it in the form of racism or segregation. In sociology,
classification of people into groups are based on shared social and economic conditions; these three
main groups are the capitalist class, working class, and marginal working class. Within these groups
are many inequalities. The capitalist class would be considered the wealthy who own companies and
buy labor from the working class. Working class are the group that sells their labor. The marginal
working class is the most desperate members of society who have little money or skills, most often
unemployed or jailed. Because of their struggle with poverty, most end up as prison inmates or
repeat offenders.
Inequality is most often used to describe how power is distributed and how some obtain more than
others. The way

Social Inequality
What is social inequality? What are the sources of social inequality? For me, social inequality
cannot be described in one sentence. Factors such as race, wealth, class, gender, age, among others
all play roles into why people can sometimes be treated unfairly. However before I introspectively
reflect on social inequality, there is one theory that suggests where today's society is heading for me.
Karl Marx is known as a prominent economic and political influence that lived during the 19th
century. Marx's theory of stratification is very applicable to where society, especially in the United
States, is heading today. According to Marx, society would become divided into two classes, the

(Smeeding, Timothy) Some economists even refer to Russia and Mexico as "developing" countries.
Essentially the United States has the biggest economic gap among all developed countries. Why has
that occurred? CEO's, professional athletes, actors ect. make most of the money earned in this
country, leaving everyone else to work for them while they make a ridiculous income and the
workers settle for just enough to have a modest lifestyle. The other day I was watching a film that
promoted a similar theme to what I am trying to convey. The production was called In Time starring
Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. Basically instead of money people were paid in time that
they had left to live. In the movie we see a huge disparity in how different people live based on how
much time they had. The important figures in their society used the time they had to manipulate
everyone else because they could afford to give some away. This represents how money is
influential in today's culture. Through outlets like social media, advertisements, and important
public figures having money is portrayed as being paramount. However the opposite, if someone is
living in poverty, something must be wrong with them or they aren't as valuable to the community.
To create a successful, tolerant, and synergistic society money cannot determine someone's worth to
society. Obviously

Social Inequality And Gender Inequality Essay
Social inequality is defined as the set of unequal opportunities for different social classes or statuses
for various individuals within a group or society. It usually refers to people of distinct genders, ages,
and ethnicities. Many American's have experienced some type of social inequality throughout their
lifetime. America's gaping inequality is seen everywhere from education to the workforce. Society
tends to oversee inequality based on race, gender, and other social characteristics . Americans
believe that racial discrimination no longer hinders or affects the advancement of minorities. Racial
and ethnic actions are still being taken towards minorities in education, employment, housing,
arrests, and many other issues of society. Social inequality and discrimination towards minorities is
clear in everyday society. This can be seen by the way inequality is still persistent among the social
classes. Among these classes formed by society, minorities tend to be one of the most affected. This
is noticed by the way education remains segregated, the wage inequality, and the constant cycle of
poverty. Many have used their voice to shine light on these issues, articles and authors such as
"Social Inequality and Educational Disadvantage" by the Russel Sage Foundation argue the lack of
equal assortment of resources between the rich and the poor is leaving them with the disparity of
proper resources, and Jean Anyon's "From Social Class and The Hidden Curriculum of Work" in her

Social Inequality In 1820s
Social inequality in 1820s Social equality has been a goal of America since its very beginning.
However, it was only an intention to be socially equal, but not a goal. Social equality or the fact that
all men were created equal only applied to the white man. There was no intention in meaning that
the blacks and Indians or even the women were equal. In the eyes of the delegates, and the common
white majority, blacks, indians, and women were not an issue. To them, it was apparent that blacks
were kids, Indians were savages, and women were homemakers. From the late 18th century to the
mid 19th century was the greatest era of social and racial inequality in all American history.

Blacks were considered children. Social Equality cannot be achieved if inferiority is placed upon a

from hell and his own savagery. Social and Racial Equality in the south was incredibly hard to
obtain because blacks were considered childish, stupid, inferior, and hell–bound without the white
man's help. On page 83 of The Mind of the South, W.J. Cash states, "The black man occupied the

Social Inequality And Social Class Essay
The idea of social inequality dates back since the time of our founding fathers. The mistreatment
and unlawful equality and opportunity that these foreigners received became embedded into our
history–this endless list includes, just to name a few, the Irish, Chinese, Jews, and most notably the
African Americans (Blacks), who became slaves to the American people. Here in the United States,
the current social class system is known as the class system, where families are distributed and
placed into three different existing class–the upper class (wealthy), middle class (working), and
lower class (poor). Since then, improvisations have been worked on into the class system,
establishing now roughly six social classes: upper class, new money, middle class, working class,
working poor, and poverty level. Social stratification is a widely common topic of debate because
there have since been many arguments and debates on this controversial situation of social
inequality and how it relates to social class and social mobility. According to Economist Robert
Reich, he states that "The probability that a poor child in America will become a poor adult is higher
now than it was 30 years ago..." (Reich, par. 5), meaning the given amount of equality, opportunity,
and support that these struggle families obtain have gone mainly unnoticed by the government that
it has gotten worst. The constant uproar of social inequality and injustice that these middle and
lower working class families stem

Define Social Inequality
Society has been divided for many years and continues to be. We are not only divided by race but
also by class. Class is what determines what your future will look like regardless of how hard you
work or don't. There is a lot of inequality of opportunities, which is defined as, "Differences in
people's opportunities to acquire the rewards offered by their society" (An Introduction to the Study
of Social Inequality, p.17). The reality of the truth is that the status of a person determines how fast
you will get there. This quote sums up what I am trying to explain about status, "Poor kids who do
everything right don't do better than rich kids who do everything wrong" (Washington Post, 2014).

Social Inequality In To Kill A Mockingbird
In the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" one of the multiple dilemmas brought to light in the novel and
the film is the social inequality. Rather it be at the suffering of a person of color to a woman or
child; todays society still suffers from from the social inequality pointed out in the novel based on
the 1930s, 1933 specifically and can be compared to some cases from the novel. Social inequality
can be forced on anybody but more specifically pushes onto people of a colored ethnic background
(color), the gender a person is born with or chooses to identify as (sexuality), or the religion they
choose to practice and so on, however this essay is going to focus mainly on the three social
inequalities listed above. The largest social inequality that I feel can be related most accurately back
to the novel is racism; people of color not getting treated equally solely because of their color and
the "influential" people in today's society are not using their full capabilities to stop the racism.
Tying back to the novel when Tom (a colored man) gets accused or rape and assault, but has no
accurate physical evidence pointing towards him, supporting the accusations he still gets found
guilty by a jury, because of racism. Tom had been getting unfair punishment towards him, sentenced
to death for a false accusation, this is relatable to current events because now if a colored person so

Social Structural Inequality And Crime
Inequality is not an unfamiliar concept, it has been prevalent for quite some time. Inequality is
growing and more people are experiencing the "crisis of inequality". Many scholars are saying that
we are approaching two societies one "black" and one "white" (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2016).
There are many different types of inequality, although they all have a similar meanings. Structural
inequality can be defined as when one group of people is given a disadvantage or unequal social
status than other groups of people (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2016). Structural inequality can be
seen through many different relationships or social institutions. Race/ethnicity is one of the largest
areas that is affected by social structural inequalities. Structural inequality and crime go hand–in–
hand. This is because they both can have an effect on each other, one can potentially be a factor to
the other. Race/ethnicity also plays a role in crime causation. All three of these ideas are intertwined
and can effect one another. According to Walker, Spohn, & DeLone ... Show more content on

If minorities are living in these poverty driven neighborhoods that are being deteriorated and are full
of crime, education may be sufficient. If the individuals living in these communities do not have
access to an equal education they are going to be at a disadvantage. They will then be experiencing
another part of structural discrimination. If these individuals do not have the same opportunities
they will probably be more likely to participate in crime causation according to the Differential
Association Theory (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2016). Based on the evidence presented,
impoverished neighborhoods are likely to more suitable for criminal activity. Due to structural
inequality, minorities need to reside in these types of communities; therefore, they are exposed at
higher rates to this behavior. This could explain why minorities have a disproportionate statistic to

According to www.investopedia.com "The overall effect of economic growth on social inequality is,
like the effect of a marching column: the column advances and the last rank eventually passes the
point which was reached by the vanguard some time before". This suggests that the richest
individuals in society have stayed rich, or even become richer, but for those who are classified as
poor, the majority of them have stayed the same. The poor continue to make up a large percentage
of the European population. This is largely due to low incomes and employment. According to
www.theindependent.co.uk "UK inequality has increased by 42% since 1977". This is a clear
indicator that the gap between the richest and poorest individuals in society is at its highest level in
decades. Social consequences are the impact of an event or action on a social environment. For

Social Inequality In Australia
Australia possesses social inequality due to the uneven distribution of its resources. The social
inequality within Australia will be measured through earnings, where the dispersion of labour
market incomes will define social classes. This will be further explored through Karl Marx's social
theory of class, sociologists measure of inequality, and the consequences of inequality. Earnings
inequality within Australia can be identified through Karl Marx's social theory of class. Marx
distinguished class by its mode of production, such as the division of labour and earnings. The
working class is "exploited‟ and alienated from work produced by capitalist organisation that seeks
profit. These categories are produced when repeated transactions across the boundary both regularly

The most widely used aggregated measure of dispersion is Gini Coefficient which represents the
wealth distribution of a nation's residents. This method measures inequality within scores between 0
and 1, where the higher score indicates inequality. HILDA survey data show that Australia's Gini
coefficient was 0.303 in 2000–01 and 0.296 in 2014–15. Although the Gini coefficient identified
Australia's overall household income inequality has barely changed, the ABS has identified that
wealth distribution of Australia's residents still indicates a difference in social classes. The ABS also
identified the labour market has become more socially unequal through a sample. Therefore,
sociologist's measurements of inequality attests to the notion that the dispersion of labour market
incomes define social classes and reiterate social inequality within

Social Inequality And Gender Inequality Essay
n AmericaSocial inequality is defined as the set of unequal for different social classes or statuses for
various individuals within a group or society. It usually refers to people of distinct genders, ages and
ethnicities. Many American's have experienced some type of social inequality throughout their
lifetime. America's gaping inequality is seen everywhere from education to the workforce. Society
tends to oversee inequality based on race, gender, and other social characteristics believe that racial
discrimination no longer hinders or affects the advancement of minorities. Racial and ethnic actions
are still being taken towards minorities in education, employment, housing, arrests, and many other
issues of society. Social inequality and discrimination towards minorities is clear in everyday
society. This can be seen by the way inequality is still persistent among the social classes. Among
these classes formed by society, minorities tend to be one of the most affected. This is noticed by the
way education remains segregated, the wage inequality social prejudice in the workforce) and social
disparity (inequality Poverty). Many have used their voice to shine light on these issues, authors
such as Michelle Alexander in her essay " The New Jim Crow " argues the fake abolishment of the
racism and segregation , and
Class and The Hidden Curriculum of Work" in her essay reveals the inequality based on a student's
community and socioeconomic status.

How Social Inequality Is Too Much?
Society is a group of people. Not just one or two people, but a large number. In order for society to
work there must be some form of structure built into our society and carried out by those who live in
it. However there are many people who do not reach the expectations of our society; for example
their house is not nice enough or they do not make enough money. This is not their fault, but they
are still left behind. On the other hand there are individuals that thrive and flourish in our culture
and society. This disparity is called Social Inequality; every society today contains inequality, but
how much inequality is too much? The degree of inequality that we see around us today is
unnecessary and hinders the development of an environment in which everyone can attain an
acceptable standard of living. In societies containing a large amount of inequality, people are unable
to access benefits such as health care and education. Because of this, people that are born into poor
families stay poor and are unable to break the cycle. This leads to people having to settling for low–
income jobs and are unable to maintain their homes and communities and as time goes on
communities deteriorate. In this paper, we will first consider the lack of proper health care that
many low–income families are able to afford. Then we will establish how these circumstances have
created a cycle that people find nearly impossible to break. Finally we will conclude by looking at
how poor communities

Assignment 7 : Social And Economic Inequality
Assignment 7: Social and Economic Inequality For this assignment, I will be integrating the
readings on inequality and applying them to the themes that have provided the framework for our
course. I will first offer my explanation as to why it is important to understand social and economic
inequality. Then, I will explain and highlight the importance of the relationship between increasing
inequality and social and economic mobility. Third, I will relate the persistence of inequality in our
economic system discussed by Carruthers and Babb in Chapter 6 of Economy/Society to the
concepts of embeddedness and "what markets can and cannot do" discussed at the start of the
course. Last, I will offer my opinion on the policy prescriptions in The Missing Class. I believe that
it is incredibly important to understand social and economic inequality. As Carruthers and Babb
explain in Economy/Society, many arguments exist today for the presence of inequality as it relates
to economic efficiency – "without extremes of economic well–being, people wouldn't have a good
enough reason to work" (p. 129). Through being well–informed on the pernicious effects of living
on this extreme pole of economic well–being, we have the power to make an informed decision as
to whether a system that produces economic and social inequality is one we want to advocate for or
oppose. For example, Carruthers and Babb cite a study in which researchers found that "economic
inequality [made] people work less rather

Inequality in Social Classes
Imagine living in a society full of equality, where everyone would have the same income, house,
and social class, in other words a 'perfect' world, free of competition, greed, classes, and more
importantly inequality. Unfortunately, living in classless society falls under the category of a utopia,
as long as greed exists in the heart of society, inequality and the division between classes is not
going to end. As Mary Douglas once stated, "Inequality can have a bad downside, but equality, for
its part, sure does get in the way of coordination." If in today's society, social classes is more
important than race and inequality is breeding more inequality, what effects is elevating the low
income class going to have on our society and our way of living, will this further shorten the gap or
perhaps break the balance between social classes?
In Matthew O'Brien's article, "RIP, American Dream? Why It's So Hard for the Poor to Get Ahead
Today," published on June 2013 in The Atlantic, the author presents how today's economy is based
in more inequality and not equality, and how it has affected the economy's mobility by further
widening the social class gap between the people at the top incomes and the less fortunate at the
lower income. Listing several issues such as the deregulation in Wall Street, globalization, and even
marriage, the author illustrates how America's top one percent has caused the widening of the
economic gap between the top and the rest of society. For instance,

Social Inequality : A Part Of Sports
Thesis: Social inequality is a part of many issues other than sports, but it is a part of sports to do
several issues such as gender roles, salary and stereotypes.
The Significance: The significance of this topic of inequality in sports is that it does not just occur in
sports. It happens all around us, you see social inequality happening at work places, schools,
restaurants and many other places. Many people don't see if because they don't know what it is.
Population:
Many people think it only affects adults. It affects more than adults, it has an effect on professionals,
college, high school and inside sports growing up as kids.
Why did you choose this topic: I chose this topic because as a child I grew in the world of sports. I
have played since I was five and have been an influence on the person I am today. These issues are
important to sports and need to be fixed. I believe if we fixed these issues sports would be better and
more people will take part in them.
The Problem: The problem is, there is nothing that is keeping people from looking at woman
athletes differently than men, there is noting that is helping both genders earn the same salary and
there is nothing stopping the stereotypes that are being said about certain sports. Social inequalities
happen everyday but many people are unaware of what social inequality is, therefore they are
unable to correct these issues and try and stop it from repeating again.

commonly associated with social inequalities: social class (income, wealth, (current and intended)

traditional inequalities, such as national origin,, sexual identity or preference, age, weight, able–

SOCIAL INEQUALITIES IN TWENTY YEARS Mortality studies show that social inequalities in
health include, but are not confined to, worse health among the poor. There is a social gradient;
mortality rises with decreasing socio–economic status. Three large sample studies, one British and
two American, brought together for their complementarity in samples, measures, and design, all
show similar social gradients for adult men and women in physical and mental morbidity and in
psychological well–being. These gradients are observed both with educational and occupational
status and are not explained by parents' social status or lack of an intact family during childhood.
They are also not accounted for by intelligence measured in school. This suggests that indirect
selection cannot account for inequalities in health. Possible mediators that link social position to
physical and mental health include smoking and features of the psycho–social environment at work
and outside. Increasing social inequalities in health in the United States and elsewhere, coupled with
growing inequalities in income and wealth, have refocused

Social Inequalities In The LGBTQA Community
Social inequality is basically considered to be an unfair distribution of resources among people in a
society. Inequality among people based on gender, sex, religion, race, color, ethnicity was in our
society for over a prolonged period but was not dealt with. It's basically come into play when people
try to consider their beliefs and viewpoints as superior to other rather than respecting everyone's
belief. People often try to make certain notions of what normal is and then try to look at situations
using that criterion that is not correct. Everyone is unique in their own way and have diverse ways
to look at something. As the only sociologist on the North American Council, I will try to highlight
the most important social inequalities that need to be addressed immediately. According to me the
three social inequalities that need to be addressed are Sexuality and gender inequality, Class
inequality, and Ethnic Inequality.
To Start with, Sexuality and gender inequality refer to discriminating someone based on their sexual
orientation. often people confuse between sex and gender. Sex is biologically assigned as in what
reproductive part you have while gender is someone feel internally. Even after living in the 21st
century people still show inequality for LGBTQA community. People tend to think heterosexuals
are superior to homosexuals creating a sense of inequality. There are still people not only in North
America but in various parts of worlds that are accepting homosexuality.

Examples Of Social Inequality In To Kill A Mockingbird
Social inequality has been a relevant issue since the beginning of our society. We are all affected by
it, and it cannot be avoided. Reflecting this, Harper Lee fluently expresses the idea that social
inequalities people inherit will end up determining the quality of one's life in her book To Kill a
Mockingbird. People are born into many of the most common and discriminating social inequalities.
The issues our parents face become ours as well. Social status, income and race are just a few things
that end up affecting how we are treated, as well as affect the opportunities we are presented with in
life. When children are born into rich, white families, they will be treated and viewed differently
than black children who grew up in families facing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

reflect those of many people today. She is denying him an opportunity without even meeting him.

Robert Reich On Social Inequality
Social inequality is something our ancestors had to deal with and something our children will have
to deal with. This is an ongoing issue addressed by many but solved by none. Social inequality is
inevitable in this capitalistic society. This idea of social inequality promotes the idea of capitalism
which then promotes the American Dream. The American Dream has become harder to reach than
ever before. Since the middle class is shrinking, the lower class finds it near to impossible to work
their way up the ladder. Due to new fortunes in industry, the lower class has a cap set over them that
they cannot quite break from. Big businesses and the one percent has stomped on the American
Dream. To reduce this flaw in social inequality, the restrictions ... Show more content on

"The right of the laborer to his hundred dollars in the savings–bank, and equally the legal right of
the millionaire to his millions," this is what Carnegie calls intense individualism (Carnegie 488).
This idea is essentially the heart of capitalism. As humans, it is natural for most to be competitive
and have the drive to be successful. The competition, also referred to as survival of the fittest,
pushes most people to be the best and work hard so they can have the higher status. When you work
hard and get an earning from that, it is instinctive for most to want to keep that money, not give it
away. This is the idea of the American Dream, when you pull yourself up from the bootstraps to
give yourself the life you wanted. This competition does not only fall within individuals but
companies as well. This competitiveness and desire to be the best is constantly stimulating the
economy. When wealth is just handed out like Carnegie suggests, people will get lethargic and not

The Social Issue Of The Income Inequality Essay
The social issue of the income inequality In today's modern world, as the technology has developed
better daily, whereas the gap referred to income inequality between rich and poor still has not solved
but has widened. Income inequality simply refers to the extent to which income is unevenly and
unreasonably distributed in manner among a population. The inequality brings economic instability,
but sadly most people are not relatively concerned about the wide inequality between classes. Ever
since the distance between upper class and middle/lower class has been stretching and growing
gradually and markedly for almost 30 years, it has become an important political battleground and
deeply troubling in the world, and within the United States over the past few decades. The great
disparity is immoral because it leads to wealthier people to unevenly distribute an unacceptable
degree of control in a society. The great disparity also undermines in the fairness of political
institutions and the economic system over many aspects of the lives of poorer people and also
increases depress demand of consumption levels depending more on the wages middle/lower
income earners than the profits of the wealthy. From this perspective, the outrageously huge
disparity between classes should be eliminated. The best ways to reduce inequality income would be
to make fairer taxes which means to lower taxes on middle and lower income earners or even raise
the minimum wage effectively since asset prices

religious, ethnic and many other forms of discrimination. Social inequality is defined as 'the

classism and gender. Inequality factors into the course of the story in very evident ways ultimately

Social Inequalities Of Women's Rights
For centuries women have faced inequalities of all types. They faced social, economic, and political
injustices. There have been many instances through the years of women speaking up for their rights,
particularly in modern times. They have organized conventions, participated in parades, and put
themselves and their voices out there. Despite the overwhelming opposition, they kept at it and
slowly worked to gain more and more rights. Though they have gained some, many believe they do
not have all that is due to them. Politically women have equal rights, while socially and
economically women are not.
Women have faced social inequalities for centuries and are constantly fighting for a part in the
discussion. Women were seen as servants to men, and this role was not questioned until the 1830's
and 1840's. They were to provide and raise the children for their husbands. They were also to keep
the home and keep them happy while home. Often when trouble arose in a marriage, the burden was
placed on the woman to bear (Women's Roles). In the early 1800's women began to work to slowly
change that attitude. For years women have faced the persecution of their voices. Sometimes women
spoke against their husbands. They said that they had been abused, and when they said this, the
statement was turned against them, and they took the blame. The women claimed that men have
worked to lessen the women's self–respect and to have women to lead a dependent life.(Mott) Men

Examples Of Social Inequalities In The Progressive Era
There have been echoes of inequality among various social classes since as early as the late 1800s.
Inequalities made on the basis of poverty, gender, and race have left many Americans at a

equality", yet it symbolizes pain, inferiority, and unworthiness to many. The Gilded Age was praised
as a pinnacle time of industrialization for the United States. This time period created a hierarchy of
power that brought wealth to the top–tier and left everyone else to merely survive. However, The

Social Inequality In The Dance Industry
Everyone experiences social inequality at least once in their lifetime, whether it is something small
or something big it is still social inequality. Personally, I have experienced social inequality in the
dance studio due to my physical appearance. About 3 years ago I experienced social inequality due
to my physical appearance. I was quite short 3 years ago and this other girl was taller than me. We
were at the same dance level and had about the same muscle mass as me, however, she was always
placed in the front center of the stage and I was always placed at the back dark corner where no one
is able to see me. This made me feel like I was a bad dancer because this has happened in every
single dance we were in together which was about five. She was, also, a lot prettier than me and she
knew it. Since she was always placed in the front she was quite stuck up and as a result, not many
people at the dance studio liked her. This is an example of social inequality due to my physical
appearance compared to others in the dance studio. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

minorities ordinarily encounter racism, which benefits white individuals by presenting them with

Multi–racial children often find it hard to "fit in" when they don't really fit into the culture of one
ethnicity over the other. Past studies had expected that if an individual had a multiracial heritage that
he or she naturally identified with that heritage. However, Binning and his fellow researchers
theorized that basically having a place with different racial groups did not ensure that a man would
psychologically relate to those groups. "We imagined that diving further into the multiracial
classification to inspect how such people translated their racial character would help our
comprehension of multiracial psychology," said Binning, a post–doctoral researcher at Stanford

Fighting Social Inequality Paper
Fighting social inequality must occur on two fronts: the defensive front (or charity) and the
offensive front (or justice). Just as military tactics often use two fronts to surround the enemy and
win the war, so must we as communities implement a way to defeat and undermine social inequality.
Just as fighting a war on one front is nearly impossible to win, fighting social inequality with only
justice or only charity will not lead to an end to disparity across the country. Instead, I find it helpful
in viewing justice and charity as two parts of a singular mission that are both essential in combatting
social inequality. Similar to the notion of "Think Global, Act Local", we must act in our
communities to assist those in need through charity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

monetary donations, shelters, and other services working to meet the needs of the people in the

the underlying, structural causes of injustice and inequality by advocating for the rights of
individuals, as well as working to change systems that constantly are putting people in unjust and
oppressive situations. Examples of the "justice foot" in motion would include seeking the creation
of just laws, honest social structures, and the advocacy and promotion of peace and assistance for

Bourdieu And Social Inequality
Social inequality
When the resources in a society are distributed unevenly it leads to social inequality. Often
inequality is understood as being socio–economic and it is now closely associated with social
inequality. "Social inequalities are differences in income, resources, power and status within and
between societies. Such inequalities are maintained by those in powerful positions via institutions
and social processes." (Warwick–Booth, 2013 p.2)
Social inequalities are subjective and relative to those around us. Individuals compare themselves to
those they see which in turn may alter their expectations of equality in terms of such things as
wealth, education and gender equality for themselves. General needs and expectations differ
depending on where in the world you are. In most western countries we have come to expect certain
levels of gender equality for instance. This essay will look into social inequality, particularly in the
form of gender inequality.

The two types of capital are cultural capital and economic capital. This is then used by showing the
resulting inequalities and allocating various social slots for men and women based on said
differences. This in turn legitimizes the inheritance of social privileges in societies where
democracy is thought to be the right and virtuous way. (Wacquant, 1996)
Cultural and economic capital among others are a large part of determining the opportunities that
and individual will have. Therefore social inequality in terms of gender inequality etc. is an issue
which needs to be addressed. Social inequality is not only bad for the individual but also for society
as a whole. In that sense men are also victims of gender inequality in a relative way. (Bourdieu,

Social Inequality In The United States

  • 1. Social Inequality In The United States Social inequality comes in many forms including things such as income, race, gender, and wealth. It is something we can see in everyday life, yet there are some people that don't seem to think it exists, or it at least isn't anything that they need to be concerned about because they're doing just fine. I believe that they are wrong and that inequality affects us all in one way or another. It is something that we need to come to grips with and deal with as a society and is not a problem that can be solved on an individual basis. Income inequality has come to the front as an issue over the past few years due to low–wage workers demanding a raise in the minimum wage. While the United States remains one of the richest countries in the world, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Supposedly our system is "progressive", which means that it is taxing higher incomes at higher rates, but with all of the loopholes and tax breaks that those at the top can work around, a lot of the lower classes actually end up paying more of a percentage of their income in taxes. Sales taxes and payroll taxes also hit those income levels harder because, again, those end up being a larger amount of their total income. For example, Kansas now has one of the nation's highest sales tax rates, at 6.5%, in the nation. Many localities have additional local taxes on top of that, making the total tax rate upwards of 10% in some places. (Kansas Department of Revenue, 2015). A 10% sales tax is going to make life a lot harder for someone who only brings home $600 a month than it is on someone who brings home $4000 a month. Regressive taxes like this tend to hit the lower and middle class harder so, if we want to improve income inequality we can move to reduce those. At the federal level, congress can move to implement policies like I mentioned, along with others that would make the system fairer and distribute wealth a little more ... • 2. San Francisco Social Inequality Essay Social Inequality of the Golden City The Golden Gate Bridge takes a curious traveler across the San Francisco Bay area into a marvelous journey towards a technologically innovative city of San Francisco. The city of San Francisco has forever been a national symbol of coveted opportunity, cultural disapprobation, technological blossoming – and, frankly, economic inequality. In the past, countless attempts were made by multiple scholars to identify the sources of San Francisco's social inequality. Statisticians compiled large tomes of data, while Sociologists wrote unending arrays of books; all in efforts to understand the basis of social inequality in the Golden City. Likewise, this essay will begin by identifying early sources of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By and large, the war continued until 1848 – its victory awarded America with the new territory, which marked the beginning of economic advancement of the west. Perhaps, 1848 also marked the beginning of social inequality. Upon the discovery of gold in California, thousands of fortune–dwellers migrated to San Francisco. In fact, the population of San Francisco increased from 450 in 1848 to a colossal size of 25,000 by the end of 1949 (SFgenealogy 2017). Incidentally, multiple gold mining towns were erected across San Francisco. The new towns grew often in the form of businesses, food courts, and even entertainment facilities. Paradoxically, this historical nuance introduced the division of people by class. Division of class in San Francisco, meant that individuals who initiated first business facilities were now becoming wealthier by exploiting their lower–class counterparts. A tempting question arises, who were those lower–class counterparts? A demographic report of 1853 provides nothing unusual about the San Francisco's population: 98.3% of the population were white leaving the remaining 1.7% to African–Americans, Indians, etc. (SFgenealogy 2017). However, a statistical report by the Secretary of State to the California Legislature, sheds light onto the demographic description mentioned above; "Figures for Hispanics were ... • 3. Dan Ariely And Social Inequality According to Dan Ariely, James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics, and Bryan Stevenson, American lawyer and social justice activist, today's world is experiencing a huge issue of society's growing inequality and one of the brightest examples of the inequality is the America's justice system. The thing is that society is not aware of that kind of growing issue and how it stacks up to the real stats. In his video on TED, Dan Ariely reveals some new, surprising research on what we think is fair, as far as how wealth is distributed over societies. One of his experiences showed a surprising result. Americans "think that the bottom 20 percent has about 2.9 percent of the wealth, the next group has 6.4, so together it's slightly more than nine. The next group, they say, has 12 percent, 20 percent, and the richest 20 percent, people think has 58 percent of the wealth" (Ariely, 2015). However, the reality is slightly different. He said, "the bottom 20 percent has 0.1 percent of the wealth. The next 20 percent has 0.2 percent of the wealth. Together, it's 0.3. The next group has 3.9, 11.3, and the richest group has 84–85 percent of the wealth" (Ariely, 2015). Dan Ariely presented a lot of different researches, in which he showed ... He described his grandmother, "she was tough, she was strong, she was powerful. She was the end of every argument in our family. She was the beginning of a lot of arguments in our family" (Stevenson, 2012). Stevenson made a strong conclusion that when we create the right kind of identity, we can say things to the world around us that they don't actually believe makes sense. We can get them to do things that they don't think they can do (Stevenson, 2012). He believes that identity can really make you a powerful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Social Inequalities During The Gilded Age During the 19th century, economic and social inequalities were at a peak. The Gilded Age yielded many inventions and advancements that led to extreme wealth and power, but it also led to poverty and despair. Both Sumner and George had theories of how poverty could have been eliminated, but their points were sometimes on opposite spectrums. This paper will discuss how some points were similar, but also very different in aspects to relieving poverty in the 19th century. William Graham Sumner was a social Darwinist who said "it is impossible that the man with capital and the man without capital should be equal. (Sumner,36)" Social Darwinists believed that evolution of human society was just as evolution in nature. Governments should not interfere ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... George's theory of having one sole tax for the land in its natural state can eliminate poverty. Material and industrial progresses have led to higher rates of poverty. Large amounts of poverty are seen in dense areas around these new industries in the city. Poverty will only continue to rise until land is available for all to use. "This single tax would be so high it would prevent speculation. (George,39)" This would allow both businessmen and urban working men to use this land equally. These technological booms that create great wealth and power also bring about greater poverty and downfall to many. Many are subject to injustice and their liberty is taken away from them. Liberty to George is the choice to be able to pursue whatever dream you want without boundaries. George says, "For Liberty means Justice, and Justice is the natural law. (George,41)" Monopolizations of countless industries such as the railroads create injustice. By following the natural law of justice, inequality would be extinguished. With new inventions and increasing populations, people fight for the opportunity to make money and own land. This competition creates poverty for those who cannot obtain capital. George believes that land prices should be so high, that people would not be able to own land but would rather rent the land. His theory explains that progress is only good to those who can achieve it due to inequality. Those who don't have a chance will remain in poverty and poverty will continue to become worse. This contrasts Sumner's idea of survival of the fittest. By giving to those who will not seek the opportunity to improve themselves, society will not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Durkheim Social Inequality The video for my project1: Video/DVD analysis is about the social/individual inequality of our society, and it will be focused on Durkheim's view. It is from the youtube.com, originally from Khan academy for health and medicine contents. The video is about the social/individual inequality in our society. The video is briefly, but explained the details of social inequality depend on the social classes of our society; upper class, middle class, and the lower (working) class and how it is that the resources in a society are unevenly distributed. It is explaining how each classes are treated in education and healthcare. One of them are the wealth distribution in the United States; the fact that Top 20% of US are taking control of 72% of the world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His views can be divided into three different theories; the form of solidarity, Anomie, and the division of labor. Durkheim explained that there are two different types of the social integration; which is mechanical and organic solidarity. He explained that the mechanical solidarity forms a group or community where people affiliate and feel the comfort by regulated by the shared rules and the systems of beliefs, which is we call common conscience. The mechanical solidarity has a strong social morality compare to organic solidarity. The organic solidarity is more like an opposite theory of mechanical solidarity. The organic solidarity is the society that is more focused on individual's values, performance in different tasks, and form a society that has less social morality with less common conscience. Durkheim explained, as a society grows up, the division of labor increases and become powerful. The mechanical and organic solidarity must exist in our society to keep the balance between the inequality and equality. But at the same time, it also makes big distance between the high class and working class and it is causing working class to feel devastated because of the differences of advantages and disadvantages between the high class and working ... • 6. Inequality : Global And Social Inequality Inequality has been shown throughout American history and has affected various countries including the United States. The two forms of inequality this paper will address are global and social inequality. Social inequality refers to the distribution of resources based on socially defined characteristics, while global inequality is the systematic differences in wealth and power between countries. Children living in poverty don't have the same opportunities as those who live in a higher income county. Discrimination, segregation, and unequal distribution of income and resources have caused inequalities to form. These two types of inequality are still affecting our society today and making it difficult for people to strive for a better future. Inequality is different within different countries. High income countries are usually the ones that were industrialized first. Industrializing is a process that began two hundred years ago in England and later spread to the United States, Canada, and the rest of Europe. (World Bank, 2007). High income countries have a large and growing amount of poor people, but unlike the lower income countries they offer decent housing, adequate food, drinkable water, and other comforts. Some of the middle income countries include: East and Southeast Asia, Middle East and North Africa, parts of the Americas, and most of the oil–rich countries. These countries began to industrialize in the twentieth century which have caused them to not be as developed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Social And Economic Inequalities Of Public Policy Social and economic inequalities exist in the UK particularly because of discrimination and prejudices resulting in unequal society lacking cohesion and unity. In 2008, a comprehensive analysis to critically analyze and asses the level of social and economic inequality was conducted in the UK, by Professor John Hills who chaired the National Equality Panel created by the government to provide in–depth analysis on the subject. The report presented by the National Equality Panel found out that public policy influenced the outcome of social and economic inequality. For instance, the report showed that public policy interventions aimed at curbing down the rising cases of inequality was effective. The report specifically cited that the public policy intervention in 1980s were effective in reducing inequality from rising. Social and economic inequalities in the UK have been explicitly linked to 'politics of envy' which further aggravates the problem rather than solving the problem. Research and debates have shown that the widespread social and economic inequalities have been closely attributed to the fact that most people seems to accept them as normal. Sociologists have cited the fact that people tend to compare themselves with people of the same social class, preventing them to view the full range of social and economic inequality that exists around them. Market liberalization and free society are the building blocks of most liberal market economies (LMEs) such as the UK; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Rawls Social Inequality Furthermore, the second law of the John Rawls' Theory of Justice states that "social and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are both (a) reasonably expected to be to everyone's advantage, and (b) attached to positions and offices open to all" (60). No doubt, John Rawls second principle of justice establishes social equality in the society and opens the door of opportunities to every single individual, who wants to rise from his/her present miserable situation. But this law, disrupts the socioeconomic balance in the society. In this case everybody wants to be in higher positions to be reputed in the society and no one wants to be a poor or miserable. Rawl is suggesting an equal distribution of wealth amongst the people to relish the freedom and equality. It disturbs the monopoly and make an imbalance in the economic growth of the country. For example; Andrew Gibson, in his political research finds that .... "Inequality of income and wealth is a driver of growth. Income disparities are part of the ......price system and they are a form of free speech – invest here!" (The Benefits of Wealth ......Inequality). Rawls is speaking about inequality which is absolutely about material wealth and designations. He is also seeking equality on the professional basis, whereas Socrates divide the ... Inequality rates were already alarming in undeveloped countries, however, the rapidness they are increasing in first world nations as well, is concerning. This fact has enhanced diverse problems such as poverty, criminality and social conflicts among others and I believe we cannot be indifferent to that. . Being born and raised in Brazil, I've been exposed to social inequality since a young age. Headlines about social inequality appeared every day on the news. Moreover, it was something that I would see on a daily basis in my community, I would even be challenged to write about the topic at school. Fortunately, I grew up among the Brazilian privileged ... • 10. Social Inequality In Urbanization Urbanization is a complex phenomenon that brought multitudes of diverse social groups together into one central location. Suddenly cities began to overflow with new cultures and ethnicities that gave communities vibrant characteristics and new life. People were able to access modern conveniences and socially network among thousands of individuals, all within one city. The economics of the city allowed for greater production and a thriving business system that promoted politics and business. Products from all over the world could be accessible somewhere in the vast cities that expanded across the United States. However, even from the beginning of this glorious migration to cities, inequality was embedded in the social system of stigmas and prejudice for minority populations (Gottdiener, M., Hutchison, R., & Ryan, M., 2015). As wealth and prosperity consumed the dominating Caucasian population, inequality and disadvantage settled over minorities such as Blacks and Latinos. Quickly, racial and ethic groups divided into segregated communities within urban societies inner–cities. The pseudo blanket of "togetherness", as one community, was hiding the disadvantages and biases that limited the growth of minority groups in economics, society, and social mobility. Limitations were set by the dominating social groups that encouraged discrimination and prejudice towards minorities (Gottdiener, 2015). Even after decades of civil rights movements and freedom for all protests, little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Combating Social Inequality : Poverty Combating Social Inequality Social inequality is a global concern impacting not only the poorest nations, but also the most economically advanced nations in the world. More alarming is the amount of separation between the worlds' wealthiest and the worlds' poorest inhabitants, with the gap widening year after year. It is estimated that between 17,000 and 22,000 children die each day due to poverty, and more than 1 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. Governments have implemented policies to help bridge the gap of social inequalities between the different races and classes in an attempt to even the playing field, politics and capitalism however have countered and, in some instances, nullified the effectiveness of those policies. Research suggests that addressing education as the root cause of social inequality, in lieu of ineffective policies that only benefit the affluent and social elite, is essential in combating poverty levels, life expectancy, quality of life and overall social well–being. The benefits of attaining higher levels of education are not limited to increased income levels and increased career opportunities. A study conducted in Denmark spanning from 1987 to 2011 concluded that people with tertiary education levels had a considerable life expectancy advantage over their primary and lower secondary education level peers (Brønnum–Hansen & Baadsgaard, 2012), with the gap in life expectancy increasing over the 25 year study. • 12. Inequality In Terms Of Social Inequality In terms of social division, according to Oxford (2013), "social mobility has fallen rapidly in many country as inequality has grown." Oxford (2013) argues that the wealthy focus only on better education and healthcare for their own families, rather than helping "public services or paying the taxes to support them." If the division continues, then there will be a side of "social ills, including violence, mental health, crime and obesity." Oxford (2013) also states that "unequal societies" not only negatively affect the poor, but also affect the rich. Environmental destruction, according to Oxford (2013), comes from inequality because the wealthy "have been estimate to use as much as 10,000 times more carbon than the average US citizen." There is also the issue of monopoly, where "resources like land and water" are reserved from potential societal good. Resources become more "scarce." Oxford (2013) states that if societies were more equal, then they would be better equipped to deal with natural disasters, as well as "carbon emissions." Equalitytrust.org has data that reveals patterns of the social costs of inequality. Inequality affects the physical health United States. If there was a more equal United States, then people are predicted to live almost a year, or more longer (The Equality Trust, 2014). Mental health is also a part of the social costs. A more equal society would lead to an improvement of "five percent," or more in mental health (The Equality Trust, 2014). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Social Inequality Perspectives by conflict theorists in sociology suggest that the social, political, or material inequality of a social group, are used as an instrument of oppression. Power is a concept that can be explained by interactions between individuals and groups. The law is an instrument of oppression used to maintain power and privilege(Henslin164) Social inequality can be seen as many different things. The most common would be gender roles or discrimination by social stereotyping. They can also be established through the unjust criminal justice system, health, and education. Inequalities exist between race or religion groups, classes, and even countries, making this a worldwide phenomenon. More often you would see it in the form of racism or segregation. In sociology, classification of people into groups are based on shared social and economic conditions; these three main groups are the capitalist class, working class, and marginal working class. Within these groups are many inequalities. The capitalist class would be considered the wealthy who own companies and buy labor from the working class. Working class are the group that sells their labor. The marginal working class is the most desperate members of society who have little money or skills, most often unemployed or jailed. Because of their struggle with poverty, most end up as prison inmates or repeat offenders. Inequality is most often used to describe how power is distributed and how some obtain more than others. • 14. Social Inequality Essay Social Inequality What is social inequality? What are the sources of social inequality? For me, social inequality cannot be described in one sentence. Factors such as race, wealth, class, gender, age, among others all play roles into why people can sometimes be treated unfairly. However before I introspectively reflect on social inequality, there is one theory that suggests where today's society is heading for me. Karl Marx is known as a prominent economic and political influence that lived during the 19th century. Marx's theory of stratification is very applicable to where society, especially in the United States, is heading today. According to Marx, society would become divided into two classes, the dominant capitalist or the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Smeeding, Timothy) Some economists even refer to Russia and Mexico as "developing" countries. Essentially the United States has the biggest economic gap among all developed countries. Why has that occurred? CEO's, professional athletes, actors ect. make most of the money earned in this country, leaving everyone else to work for them while they make a ridiculous income and the workers settle for just enough to have a modest lifestyle. The other day I was watching a film that promoted a similar theme to what I am trying to convey. The production was called In Time starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. Basically instead of money people were paid in time that they had left to live. In the movie we see a huge disparity in how different people live based on how much time they had. The important figures in their society used the time they had to manipulate everyone else because they could afford to give some away. This represents how money is influential in today's culture. Through outlets like social media, advertisements, and important public figures having money is portrayed as being paramount. However the opposite, if someone is living in poverty, something must be wrong with them or they aren't as valuable to the community. To create a successful, tolerant, and synergistic society money cannot determine someone's worth to society. Obviously ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Social Inequality And Gender Inequality Essay Social inequality is defined as the set of unequal opportunities for different social classes or statuses for various individuals within a group or society. It usually refers to people of distinct genders, ages, and ethnicities. Many American's have experienced some type of social inequality throughout their lifetime. America's gaping inequality is seen everywhere from education to the workforce. Society tends to oversee inequality based on race, gender, and other social characteristics . Americans believe that racial discrimination no longer hinders or affects the advancement of minorities. Racial and ethnic actions are still being taken towards minorities in education, employment, housing, arrests, and many other issues of society. Social inequality and discrimination towards minorities is clear in everyday society. This can be seen by the way inequality is still persistent among the social classes. Among these classes formed by society, minorities tend to be one of the most affected. This is noticed by the way education remains segregated, the wage inequality, and the constant cycle of poverty. Many have used their voice to shine light on these issues, articles and authors such as "Social Inequality and Educational Disadvantage" by the Russel Sage Foundation argue the lack of equal assortment of resources between the rich and the poor is leaving them with the disparity of proper resources, and Jean Anyon's "From Social Class and The Hidden Curriculum of Work" in her ... • 16. Social Inequality In 1820s Social inequality in 1820s Social equality has been a goal of America since its very beginning. However, it was only an intention to be socially equal, but not a goal. Social equality or the fact that all men were created equal only applied to the white man. There was no intention in meaning that the blacks and Indians or even the women were equal. In the eyes of the delegates, and the common white majority, blacks, indians, and women were not an issue. To them, it was apparent that blacks were kids, Indians were savages, and women were homemakers. From the late 18th century to the mid 19th century was the greatest era of social and racial inequality in all American history. The Declaration of Independence states, "We hold these ... Social and Racial Equality in the south was incredibly hard to obtain because blacks were considered childish, stupid, inferior, and hell–bound without the white man's help. On page 83 of The Mind of the South, W.J. Cash states, "The black man occupied the position of a domestic animal. without will or right of is own." And yes, the black man did play the role of a domestic animal, he was stripped of liberities, property, and will by the whites. The black man PLAYED the role of a domestic animal, but he was not a domestic animal. The institution of slavery brought the blacks to the lowest class possible, the slave class, they had no respect, no equality, no rights. It took the will of abolitionists, white and black, along with the power of war to end slavery, and another 100 years for blacks to gain their rights. • 17. Social Inequality And Social Class Essay The idea of social inequality dates back since the time of our founding fathers. The mistreatment and unlawful equality and opportunity that these foreigners received became embedded into our history–this endless list includes, just to name a few, the Irish, Chinese, Jews, and most notably the African Americans (Blacks), who became slaves to the American people. Here in the United States, the current social class system is known as the class system, where families are distributed and placed into three different existing class–the upper class (wealthy), middle class (working), and lower class (poor). Since then, improvisations have been worked on into the class system, establishing now roughly six social classes: upper class, new money, middle class, working class, working poor, and poverty level. Social stratification is a widely common topic of debate because there have since been many arguments and debates on this controversial situation of social inequality and how it relates to social class and social mobility. According to Economist Robert Reich, he states that "The probability that a poor child in America will become a poor adult is higher now than it was 30 years ago..." (Reich, par. 5), meaning the given amount of equality, opportunity, and support that these struggle families obtain have gone mainly unnoticed by the government that it has gotten worst. Class is what determines what your future will look like regardless of how hard you work or don't. There is a lot of inequality of opportunities, which is defined as, "Differences in people's opportunities to acquire the rewards offered by their society" (An Introduction to the Study of Social Inequality, p.17). The reality of the truth is that the status of a person determines how fast you will get there. Rather it be at the suffering of a person of color to a woman or child; todays society still suffers from from the social inequality pointed out in the novel based on the 1930s, 1933 specifically and can be compared to some cases from the novel. Social inequality can be forced on anybody but more specifically pushes onto people of a colored ethnic background (color), the gender a person is born with or chooses to identify as (sexuality), or the religion they choose to practice and so on, however this essay is going to focus mainly on the three social inequalities listed above. The largest social inequality that I feel can be related most accurately back to the novel is racism; people of color not getting treated equally solely because of their color and the "influential" people in today's society are not using their full capabilities to stop the racism. Tying back to the novel when Tom (a colored man) gets accused or rape and assault, but has no accurate physical evidence pointing towards him, supporting the accusations he still gets found guilty by a jury, because of racism. Tom had been getting unfair punishment towards him, sentenced to death for a false accusation, this is relatable to current events because now if a colored person so much as walks down the road, they can get shot and killed by the police because they were looking ... Inequality is growing and more people are experiencing the "crisis of inequality". Many scholars are saying that we are approaching two societies one "black" and one "white" (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2016). There are many different types of inequality, although they all have a similar meanings. Structural inequality can be defined as when one group of people is given a disadvantage or unequal social status than other groups of people (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2016). Structural inequality can be seen through many different relationships or social institutions. Race/ethnicity is one of the largest areas that is affected by social structural inequalities. Structural inequality and crime go hand–in– hand. This is because they both can have an effect on each other, one can potentially be a factor to the other. Race/ethnicity also plays a role in crime causation. All three of these ideas are intertwined and can effect one another. According to Walker, Spohn, & DeLone ... If these individuals do not have the same opportunities they will probably be more likely to participate in crime causation according to the Differential Association Theory (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2016). Social Inequality Essay According to www.investopedia.com "The overall effect of economic growth on social inequality is, like the effect of a marching column: the column advances and the last rank eventually passes the point which was reached by the vanguard some time before". This suggests that the richest individuals in society have stayed rich, or even become richer, but for those who are classified as poor, the majority of them have stayed the same. The poor continue to make up a large percentage of the European population. This is largely due to low incomes and employment. According to www.theindependent.co.uk "UK inequality has increased by 42% since 1977". This is a clear indicator that the gap between the richest and poorest individuals in society is at its highest level in decades. Social consequences are the impact of an event or action on a social environment. For example, education. Some say that belonging to a wealthy family aids in how children do at school. While education and working hard are seen as important for doing well and getting ahead, knowing the right people and belonging to a wealthy family can also be critical. www.teachfirst.org.uk suggests that "The link between low income and low academic attainment is greater in the UK than almost any other developed nation". The social inequality within Australia will be measured through earnings, where the dispersion of labour market incomes will define social classes. This will be further explored through Karl Marx's social theory of class, sociologists measure of inequality, and the consequences of inequality. Earnings inequality within Australia can be identified through Karl Marx's social theory of class. Marx distinguished class by its mode of production, such as the division of labour and earnings. The working class is "exploited‟ and alienated from work produced by capitalist organisation that seeks profit. These categories are produced when repeated transactions across the boundary both regularly yield net advantages to those on one side and reproduce the boundary. For example, Australian mine owners hire hewers to send coal up from underground but don't pay the hewers the value of their efforts. Instead, the owners use profit to reinforce the boundary ... • 24. How Social Inequality Is Too Much? Society is a group of people. Not just one or two people, but a large number. In order for society to work there must be some form of structure built into our society and carried out by those who live in it. However there are many people who do not reach the expectations of our society; for example their house is not nice enough or they do not make enough money. This is not their fault, but they are still left behind. On the other hand there are individuals that thrive and flourish in our culture and society. This disparity is called Social Inequality; every society today contains inequality, but how much inequality is too much? The degree of inequality that we see around us today is unnecessary and hinders the development of an environment in which everyone can attain an acceptable standard of living. In societies containing a large amount of inequality, people are unable to access benefits such as health care and education. Because of this, people that are born into poor families stay poor and are unable to break the cycle. This leads to people having to settling for low– income jobs and are unable to maintain their homes and communities and as time goes on communities deteriorate. In this paper, we will first consider the lack of proper health care that many low–income families are able to afford. Then we will establish how these circumstances have created a cycle that people find nearly impossible to break. Finally we will conclude by looking at how poor communities ... • 25. Assignment 7 : Social And Economic Inequality Assignment 7: Social and Economic Inequality For this assignment, I will be integrating the readings on inequality and applying them to the themes that have provided the framework for our course. I will first offer my explanation as to why it is important to understand social and economic inequality. Then, I will explain and highlight the importance of the relationship between increasing inequality and social and economic mobility. Third, I will relate the persistence of inequality in our economic system discussed by Carruthers and Babb in Chapter 6 of Economy/Society to the concepts of embeddedness and "what markets can and cannot do" discussed at the start of the course. Last, I will offer my opinion on the policy prescriptions in The Missing Class. I believe that it is incredibly important to understand social and economic inequality. As Carruthers and Babb explain in Economy/Society, many arguments exist today for the presence of inequality as it relates to economic efficiency – "without extremes of economic well–being, people wouldn't have a good enough reason to work" (p. 129). Through being well–informed on the pernicious effects of living on this extreme pole of economic well–being, we have the power to make an informed decision as to whether a system that produces economic and social inequality is one we want to advocate for or oppose. For example, Carruthers and Babb cite a study in which researchers found that "economic inequality [made] people work less rather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Inequality in Social Classes Imagine living in a society full of equality, where everyone would have the same income, house, and social class, in other words a 'perfect' world, free of competition, greed, classes, and more importantly inequality. Unfortunately, living in classless society falls under the category of a utopia, as long as greed exists in the heart of society, inequality and the division between classes is not going to end. As Mary Douglas once stated, "Inequality can have a bad downside, but equality, for its part, sure does get in the way of coordination." If in today's society, social classes is more important than race and inequality is breeding more inequality, what effects is elevating the low income class going to have on our society and our way of living, will this further shorten the gap or perhaps break the balance between social classes? In Matthew O'Brien's article, "RIP, American Dream? Why It's So Hard for the Poor to Get Ahead Today," published on June 2013 in The Atlantic, the author presents how today's economy is based in more inequality and not equality, and how it has affected the economy's mobility by further widening the social class gap between the people at the top incomes and the less fortunate at the lower income. Listing several issues such as the deregulation in Wall Street, globalization, and even marriage, the author illustrates how America's top one percent has caused the widening of the economic gap between the top and the rest of society. Social Inequality : A Part Of Sports Thesis: Social inequality is a part of many issues other than sports, but it is a part of sports to do several issues such as gender roles, salary and stereotypes. The Significance: The significance of this topic of inequality in sports is that it does not just occur in sports. It happens all around us, you see social inequality happening at work places, schools, restaurants and many other places. Many people don't see if because they don't know what it is. Population: Many people think it only affects adults. It affects more than adults, it has an effect on professionals, college, high school and inside sports growing up as kids. Why did you choose this topic: I chose this topic because as a child I grew in the world of sports. I have played since I was five and have been an influence on the person I am today. These issues are important to sports and need to be fixed. I believe if we fixed these issues sports would be better and more people will take part in them. The Problem: The problem is, there is nothing that is keeping people from looking at woman athletes differently than men, there is noting that is helping both genders earn the same salary and there is nothing stopping the stereotypes that are being said about certain sports. Social inequalities happen everyday but many people are unaware of what social inequality is, therefore they are unable to correct these issues and try and stop it from repeating again. FUTURE SOCIAL INEQUALITIES IN TWENTY YEARS Mortality studies show that social inequalities in health include, but are not confined to, worse health among the poor. There is a social gradient; mortality rises with decreasing socio–economic status. Three large sample studies, one British and two American, brought together for their complementarity in samples, measures, and design, all show similar social gradients for adult men and women in physical and mental morbidity and in psychological well–being. These gradients are observed both with educational and occupational status and are not explained by parents' social status or lack of an intact family during childhood. They are also not accounted for by intelligence measured in school. This suggests that indirect selection cannot account for inequalities in health. Possible mediators that link social position to physical and mental health include smoking and features of the psycho–social environment at work and outside. Inequality among people based on gender, sex, religion, race, color, ethnicity was in our society for over a prolonged period but was not dealt with. It's basically come into play when people try to consider their beliefs and viewpoints as superior to other rather than respecting everyone's belief. People often try to make certain notions of what normal is and then try to look at situations using that criterion that is not correct. Everyone is unique in their own way and have diverse ways to look at something. As the only sociologist on the North American Council, I will try to highlight the most important social inequalities that need to be addressed immediately. According to me the three social inequalities that need to be addressed are Sexuality and gender inequality, Class inequality, and Ethnic Inequality. To Start with, Sexuality and gender inequality refer to discriminating someone based on their sexual orientation. often people confuse between sex and gender. Sex is biologically assigned as in what reproductive part you have while gender is someone feel internally. Even after living in the 21st century people still show inequality for LGBTQA community. The Social Issue Of The Income Inequality Essay The social issue of the income inequality In today's modern world, as the technology has developed better daily, whereas the gap referred to income inequality between rich and poor still has not solved but has widened. Income inequality simply refers to the extent to which income is unevenly and unreasonably distributed in manner among a population. The inequality brings economic instability, but sadly most people are not relatively concerned about the wide inequality between classes. Ever since the distance between upper class and middle/lower class has been stretching and growing gradually and markedly for almost 30 years, it has become an important political battleground and deeply troubling in the world, and within the United States over the past few decades. The great disparity is immoral because it leads to wealthier people to unevenly distribute an unacceptable degree of control in a society. The great disparity also undermines in the fairness of political institutions and the economic system over many aspects of the lives of poorer people and also increases depress demand of consumption levels depending more on the wages middle/lower income earners than the profits of the wealthy. From this perspective, the outrageously huge disparity between classes should be eliminated. There have been many instances through the years of women speaking up for their rights, particularly in modern times. They have organized conventions, participated in parades, and put themselves and their voices out there. Despite the overwhelming opposition, they kept at it and slowly worked to gain more and more rights. Though they have gained some, many believe they do not have all that is due to them. Politically women have equal rights, while socially and economically women are not. Women have faced social inequalities for centuries and are constantly fighting for a part in the discussion. Women were seen as servants to men, and this role was not questioned until the 1830's and 1840's. They were to provide and raise the children for their husbands. They were also to keep the home and keep them happy while home. Often when trouble arose in a marriage, the burden was placed on the woman to bear (Women's Roles). In the early 1800's women began to work to slowly change that attitude. For years women have faced the persecution of their voices. Sometimes women spoke against their husbands. They said that they had been abused, and when they said this, the statement was turned against them, and they took the blame. Racism, for instance, is comprehended to be a wonder whereby access to rights and resources is unreasonably disseminated crosswise over racial lines. My father was absent and had never finished high school and my mother had a high school diploma, however, she never attended college. Although, I look Caucasian, my mother was of Mexican and Native American descent. Because I was raised by a single mother who was raised in the Mexican culture, I was also raised in the same way. In our home, what we lacked in finances, we made up for in love and affection. Multi–racial children often find it hard to "fit in" when they don't really fit into the culture of one ethnicity over the other. Past studies had expected that if an individual had a multiracial heritage that he or she naturally identified with that heritage. However, Binning and his fellow researchers theorized that basically having a place with different racial groups did not ensure that a man would psychologically relate to those groups. "We imagined that diving further into the multiracial classification to inspect how such people translated their racial character would help our comprehension of multiracial psychology," said Binning, a post–doctoral researcher at Stanford GSB and coauthor of "The Interpretation of Multiracial Status and Its Relation to Social ... • 38. Fighting Social Inequality Paper Fighting social inequality must occur on two fronts: the defensive front (or charity) and the offensive front (or justice). Just as fighting a war on one front is nearly impossible to win, fighting social inequality with only justice or only charity will not lead to an end to disparity across the country. Instead, I find it helpful in viewing justice and charity as two parts of a singular mission that are both essential in combatting social inequality. Similar to the notion of "Think Global, Act Local", we must act in our communities to assist those in need through charity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The "charity foot" is often described as more private or individual actions that seek to meet the immediate needs of those who are hungry, unclothed, sick, in prison, or in need of some other form of aid both locally and globally. Examples of the "charity foot" in action would be soup kitchens, monetary donations, shelters, and other services working to meet the needs of the people in the community as they exist in the present moment. The "justice foot" is often described as getting to the underlying, structural causes of injustice and inequality by advocating for the rights of individuals, as well as working to change systems that constantly are putting people in unjust and oppressive situations. Examples of the "justice foot" in motion would include seeking the creation of just laws, honest social structures, and the advocacy and promotion of peace and assistance for both local and global ... • 39. Bourdieu And Social Inequality Social inequality When the resources in a society are distributed unevenly it leads to social inequality. Often inequality is understood as being socio–economic and it is now closely associated with social inequality. "Social inequalities are differences in income, resources, power and status within and between societies. Such inequalities are maintained by those in powerful positions via institutions and social processes." (Warwick–Booth, 2013 p.2) Social inequalities are subjective and relative to those around us. Individuals compare themselves to those they see which in turn may alter their expectations of equality in terms of such things as wealth, education and gender equality for themselves. General needs and expectations differ depending on where in the world you are. In most western countries we have come to expect certain levels of gender equality for instance. This essay will look into social inequality, particularly in the form of gender inequality. Bourdieu and gender social inequality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The two types of capital are cultural capital and economic capital. This is then used by showing the resulting inequalities and allocating various social slots for men and women based on said differences. This in turn legitimizes the inheritance of social privileges in societies where democracy is thought to be the right and virtuous way. (Wacquant, 1996) Cultural and economic capital among others are a large part of determining the opportunities that and individual will have. Therefore social inequality in terms of gender inequality etc. is an issue which needs to be addressed. Social inequality is not only bad for the individual but also for society as a whole. In that sense men are also victims of gender inequality in a relative way. (Bourdieu, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
