Overtime Character Analysis
Many people in life do not sit and think about the consequences that would be the outcome of their
actions. Upon approaching this show, people would see that it is just another superhero show where
the hero beats the bad guy. In a sense, it is that kind of show, but the show is more than those
stereotypical hero stories. Throughout Arrow, the protagonist Oliver Queen has problem accepting
for what he has become. Overtime, Oliver was forced to live a rough life because he found himself
trapped on an island; his rough experience of trying to survive changed him into a type of person
who would easily kill a person without a second thought. It conflicted with his lifestyle once he was
able to return home because he was trying to play two roles. ... Show more content on

Throughout the show, Oliver decides to "plays the roles of investigator, interrogator, judge, jury, and
executioner" (Beard). He decides whether or not a man gets to see the end of the day. For example,
during an ultimatum that forced Oliver to decide between the lives of two people, he chose to save
the person who was closer to him. This resulted into an upbringing of an enemy named Slade. Slade
wanted to get revenge and try to kill Oliver loved ones as a duty towards the other person. Slade
then forced to choose between the life between his mother or sister. In society, nobody should decide
who should live or die. The reason for that is because it creates bias and it the creates a problem. If
one were to choose one, then the other would die and they people would cry for the dead. People do
not realize that their actions to judge one could affect not just the person, but the people around

The Impact Of Comics And Superheroes On The American Society
Impact of Comics and Superheroes on the American SocietyA superhero is an anecdotal character of
extraordinary physical prowess committed to demonstrations of derring–do in general society
interest. Since the introduction of Superman in 1938, stories of superheroes from short to long
episode adventures; have ruled American comic books and traversed into other media. These
superheroes and comics have been used to display both negative and positive social and cultural
values in the American society. Captain America, , Superman, Simon Baz and Kamala Khan are
most prevalent in comic books and they are role models to many teenagers and adults in the society.
This paper demonstrates how these comics are useful medium through their heroic ... Show more

The use of archetypal elements in distinguishing heroes and villains is not is largely used in
superhero comics and they appear in a variety of popular fiction, revealing the values of the
hegemonic culture through its villains. When discussing the phenomenon of a popular culture item
reflecting the sentiments of a nation, one should not uncritically equal the superhero with America.
Despite the fact that the superhero can be said to typify the national character that is particularly
America (Reynolds, 1992, 18), one ought to be aware that the qualities and ideals anticipated on to
the hero are usually those of the dominant, hegemonic culture, whereas the villains usually possess
those qualities which the hegemonic culture views as undesirable. This is a typical narrative in well
known fiction, discussed in several comics for example Muslim Girl and the Green Lantern Corps,
where the hero is given all the positive social values while the villain portrays the negative social
vices for example racism and sexism. This archetyping is important since racism has been a
common vice in the American society.
The early 1960s was the time of a major reevaluation of youth culture as an economic, social, and
political force. Embodying these new advancement were the alienated anti–heroes of Marvel
Comics whose quirks spoke of modifying of the formulas for comic book superheroes. In 1962
Spider–Man who was an adolescent emerged as the Marvel

To tell the truth, at the time I was registering for this course, there was nowhere on the course title
that stated graphic novels. It simply said "introduction to fiction". So you can imagine how surprised
I was on the first day of class when you handed and read the syllabus to us. I had never read a comic
book or a graphic novel much less take a class on any of them. I kept asking myself whether I was in
the right class. The length of the syllabus and the course load did not help matters either, and I
remember you telling us not to get intimidated by the contents of the syllabus and that once we get

Not only did l find the book uninteresting, I also could not relate to it in anyway. In fact, I could not
even determine what the central theme of the book is. I think this is due largely to the fact that I
know nothing about the background story of Superman. I am a true novice in the world of comics
especially superhero comics. I have not even seen the superman movie yet. I confess that I only read
the book because I was required to. If it was left to me alone, I don't think I would have read passed
the first section. If there is anything I found interesting in the book, is Lex Luther's analytic mind
and that's because of my math background. Other than that, everything else was

stories during World War II. This gave an impression that all superheros were patriotic, perfect
people and never had a problem. Moving ahead in time to 1985, this started the Modern Age of
comics and during that time the comic book genre took a dramatic turn. We had just come from the
Silver Age, which was wacky and crazy now to the Modern Age that changes back to its roots of
psychotic Joker and dark origin stories. This is shown in Batman Begins, when Bruce is about to kill
the man who murdered his parents his friend Rachel Dawes found him with a gun about to execute
his plan Rachel says " It's not who we are but what we do that defines us" (Nolan,Batman Begins).

The question of based on multiple texts/ entertainment ( movies, TV) how has the meaning or
requirements for the island archetype change throughout time has been answered throughout this
paper. Let's break this down one more time. From the nature of the island archetype we can see that
C.G Jung created this for insight on a character which probably is a reason why many of today's
origin stories model after this archetype. The Odyssey and the TV show Arrow were clearly made in
seperate times, and although they have differences, the two stories share similarities, so just look at
how the characters develop. Yes they develop at different times, but the way is basicly the same. The
two Batman stories really show a difference, we see a major emotional change from a confident
playboy millionaire to a angery almost murderer. Finally, we sum this up and see that the island
archetype origin story is basically essential to a character's development. C.G Jung painted the way
for literature for growth and new ideas, but he didn't realize that his idea, the island archetype was
the revolutionary idea that used the entire paint can of the

Mental Disorders In Superheroes
Superheroes are no doubt a big part of popular culture in modern times. Films have popularised the
comic book community's favorite and non favorite characters. Some people believe that these
superheroes are the best members of society and most mentally stable but, a large amount of these
heroes show signs of strong mental disorders. What many people don't understand is these heroes
are struggling with things other than the villains, many of these heroes have mental disabilities some
not so severe and some are who they are. Villains also show many signs so why not explore their
minds as well? Deadpool, Batman, Iron man, the Joker, and many more suffer from these problems
and the proof is in the writing. Imagine being trapped in a box without ... Show more content on

A man who could be considered the killer Batman of the Marvel universe who has a problem with
people is Francis Castle Jr. or as you may know him the Punisher. Now, out of all the characters in
this paper, I myself am convinced that out of the heroes in this paper, Franky here is probably the
most violent and likes to be so. It's been in several comics that Frank will torture people to get
answers as well as taking the job of judge, jury, and executioner when he doesn't have a criminal
tied to a chair. The Punisher stories all focus of Frank stopping bad guys in aggressive and
dangerously harsh ways just to keep them off the streets. Mr. Castle uses his anger to accomplish his
deadly tasks. On top of being a borderline alcoholic which will bring aggression to the front of
anybody struggling with anger management, Frank is a veteran of war, meaning he is a violent man

For decades, I have been obsessed with Batman. There I said it! In the '60's I watched everyday, at
the same Bat time on the same Bat channel the Caped Crusader [Adam West] give The Joker and
other villains their due justice.
Since 2000 we've had 25 superhero movies from Marvel and DC. There are 19 more Marvel and DC
movies confirmed and 3 unconfirmed movies due between 2017 to 2020. DC Comics has six
televisions show on that have been airing since 2012 with nine currently in development. Since
2013, Marvel Comics has two shows on ABC, six on Netflix, with three waiting to be picked up by
Netflix. They also currently have seven shows in development.

Well, we all have a deep desire to break free of our limits and live a bold and meaningful life.
Heroes have the ability to rise above their fears and limitations to achieve something inconceivable,
something exceptional, something bold! Count me. That's what I want on my tombstone. "She was
exceptional, animated, fearless and bold until the day she died."
Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Iron Man ... and all the other beloved heroes embody the best we
see in ourselves. They inspire us. They each have a human side that struggles with the same day–to–
day obstacles and events we struggle with. From work to love. We watch those events unfold and we
see them cope, fail and win as a human.
Then [drum roll] out of the blue, or as scripted by the writer, an emergency strikes, and they step up.
Even stepping up as a superhuman we watch as they attempt to tackle the problem. Many times, if
not always, failing on their first attempt. What makes them a Superhero, more then even their
superpowers, is their ability to believe in themselves, and continue to fight the fight. Face their fear,
and overcome their battles.
This is something any one of us can learn to do. And must learn to do to if we plan on achieving our

Comic Books : Characters In Society
Throughout the years comic books have become the beacon of hope civilization needed to overcome
the toughest of times. From the Civil war to Nuclear Warfare heroes were created for the purpose of
keeping children's happiness from fainting into darkness. Batman, Superman, Thor, Hulk and She–
Thor were the beacon of light of my childhood and the reason why I dreamt about a better
civilization. "You humans slaughter each other because of the color of your skin, or your faith, or
your politics, or for no reason at all, too many of you hate easily as you draw breath"–Magneto. This
quote was once said by the strongest villain in comic book history as he described humans in the
war against Mutans.
Comic books have the power to make even famous of people realize how amazing they are as
Nicolas Cage described "Are modern mythology, they reflect our fears, embody our ideals, and
personalized our culture." Our civilization has created movies, books, action figures and tv shows as
they ingrained comic books into our everyday culture. We identify heroes by their persona as we
have become to known Superman "as the man of steel" and Batman " as the Dark Knight" these
characters have paved the way for new beginnings, ideals that weren't imaginable at the time they
were created.
Movies have the power to inspire us, create dreams but also change someone's views. I want you to
ask yourself why do movies inspire us? How can they make us believe in something that's not real?

Batman Vs Superman Research Paper
Batman and Superman All superheroes have at least one thing in common– they all fight crime and
save people; however, Batman and superman have more in common than that. They even have more
similarities than being the best known and loved supermen of all time. They have more similarities
than they might like to admit. These men have small things and big things in common with each
other. Batman and superman share aspects from their personal, work, and overall lives.
One thing that these two superheroes share qualities of is their personal lives. Both sets of parents
were murdered when the heroes were very young. Neither of the men had any siblings, but they
were raised in caring households by nurturing guardians. They each have a given name that they are
not referred to as often as their iconic hero name. Superman's adoptive parents gave him the name of
Clark, Clark Kent. Batman's actual birth given name is Bruce Wayne. Both men have a ridiculously
large amount of wealth. Batman always had money, because he was born into a rich household.
Superman also has a large sum of money, but he did not grow up with loads of cash. Both heroes
share certain personal attributes; although, they still have more in common. ... Show more content

fight crime. Batman has an insane clown as an archenemy, but superman has a thing as his

My Favorite Superheros
Ever since I was a little girl I have looked up to and loved superheroes. Most of the superheroes are
from Detective Comics or DC Comics for short (yes, that is Detective Comics Comics.) Nightwing
has been my favorite superhero for as long as I can remember. Obviously, Wonder Woman as well,
she is a big reason why I am a feminist. The Flash has been one of my favorite superheroes since I
was super young. However, I do not care so much for the second Flash, Barry Allen or even the
original Flash, Jay Garrick. I have always preferred the third Flash, Wally West. My favorite Green
Lantern is John Stewart. To me, all of the superheroes in DC Comics are my favorite superheroes,
but those ones stand out the most to me. Not Marvel, they suck. Nightwing. Dick ... Show more

Soon after the adoption of the nine year old boy, he became Batman's first sidekick to use the name
"Robin." The first time I ever seen Dick Grayson was when I was around three years old in the
anime–styled cartoon titled, Teen Titans. I absolutely adored that show and I still do. However,
looking back on it and rewatching episodes, they really made him be a lot like Batman, which is fine
if you do not know the comic book character because I did not at the time. His character in the
comics is definitely different than how they portrayed him in the show. He is more outgoing than
Batman and is very sarcastic. He will talk to his enemies and distract them that way. He is not a
depressed boy in a costume trying to scare people, that is Batman. To me, Batman just does not have
any personality compared to Robin. I just wish they would have portrayed him better than they did.
Anyhow, after years of being Robin, Dick Grayson wanted to be an independent superhero. At age
eighteen, he made that happen by getting an all new suit that was all black with a blue bird on it

Analysis Of Watchmen By Alan Moore
Being gifted with the term of "being a hero" holds tremendous power in our culture; children write
cute assignments on who they look up to, adolescents watch and read about heroes in their
entertainment, and even adults have personal or fictional heroes they will never get too old to stop
idolizing. In our society, we 've been raised to associate this word, "Hero", to a perfect being;
however, the evolving times and entertainment industry has made the "hero" a more complex and
multifaceted character. From Jerry Siegle 's kid friendly "Superman", to Frank Miller 's night–
dwelling "Batman", and lastly to our topic of discussion, Alan Moore 's "Watchmen" with its
conflicted depiction of characters blurring the line between being a hero or a ... Show more content

The main characters are Jupiter, Nite Owl, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Comedian, and Ozymandias.
Foremost the best example of a "hero" actually being a terrible person is the Comedian in
"Watchmen". Though he is considered a patriotic "hero", he rapes and kills women, he loves
violence and killing, he 's a drunk, and he doesn 't have a single kind line among all the insults he
hurls at other people in the entire comic. However even with all this, he is still considered a patriotic
vigilante who is a "hero" employed legally by the government after all other masked heroes where
banned by "The Keene Act". Juspeczyc, "Jupiter", is able to show several themes that would have
never been acceptable in the previous decades of comic books including sexual encounters with
Daniel and Dr. Manhattan at a young age, promiscuous attire, and insubordination when arguing
with her mother and others. The 1980s still slightly stunk of female oppression lingering from past
decades, but women were starting to take a stand and become a force of their own which I believe is
shown through this female character and many others in comics since the 80s in order to appeal to a
female and male audience. Nite Owl, or Daniel, is the most morally sound character who tries to be
a good person in the group of masked anti–heroes called the "Watchmen." It was with the good

Comics: A Better Means To An Artistic End
If a line of symmetry were to be drawn down the center of the paper, it would seem that each
character rests within his environment about to collide with the other. Even without words, a vivid
story begins to formulate in my mind, and hopefully I share the artist's vision.
Comic book art is the Pez dispenser of modernism. The aesthetics of this accessible medium walk
side by side with pop culture. No other art form can reach so many people due to its incredible
volume. Each Wednesday of every week brings new issues of titles that have been in circulation for
decades. Despite the vast numbers that arrive at retailers each month and the respect they sometimes

By simplifying the subject matter enough, the artist makes a representation that can apply to
everyone. Perhaps those who identify with Charlie Brown can do so because of his lack of detailed,
discernible features. Charlie Brown can look like any one of us, representing universal low self–
esteem.
Mike Allred represents the population of comic artists who use the most simplistic style of symbols.
The piece that I have chosen to look at is a pin–up he did for a collection of short Batman stories. A
"pin–up" gives the artist complete freedom to express human nature through one image without a
plot that needs to conform to the character's continuity. The villain in this isolated battle is
surrounded by symbols. Although I have never actually seen a standard alarm clock set on sticks of
dynamite, I know this symbol means a time bomb. And the proximity of the little hand of the clock
to its starting point probably means that Batman has little time left. I realize that the color of
cigarette smoke does not resemble the color of human skin, but in this context I see that the
uniformity of color of the smoke and the character's skin should be disregarded. The individual lines
of the drawing play an important role during interpretation. One editor states, "It's in the inking
stage that Ted [McKeever] transforms his calm and orderly pencils into the high–contrast world of
nightmare and noir" (Crain 62). The

What Makes A Superheros
Superheros are Lit/Superheros Characteristics When I was 10 years old I really got into superheros
when I saw Batman begins for the first time I loved the fact that Batman went through so much
training to become a hero to find who killed his parents and Batman was a billionaire who wanted to
help his city come back to the way it was before his parents died. The best superheroes have certain
traits that make them unique from other superheroes for example superheroes have some sort of
power or have a great story line also they have double lives keeping two identities. Some
superheroes have superpowers and some do not, but some of the best superheroes have powers such
as the Flash, Superman and Deadpool. Flash is a superhero who has the ability to run as fast as the
speed of light this makes him a great superhero because he has to learn to live with his powers and
keep his powers out of his real life and not let anyone know he's the Flash. Deadpool has the ability
to regrow body parts this makes him a great hero because he does not care for his powers he wants
to get rid of them, but he acts like a villain, but is a hero so he adds comedy to his character which
allows people to connect with him more. Superman has the powers to fly and shoot lasers out his

Importance Of Writing My Book
Growing up you could not find a bigger bookworm then myself. I read small books to big books,
books on the study of animals, plants, or just plain old novels. I have always had a passion for
learning new things from educational books or just reading a new exciting story in every novel I
picked up. I have a multitude of fond memories of books I read and lessons I learned, but one
instance I consider more impactful than the others. This moment came when my 6th grade English
teacher helped me write my own book. It may sound crazy that a mere 6th grader is attempting to
write a book, but at the time it was a huge deal to me. I have had many hobbies throughout my life
and find myself consistently picking up new hobbies. In 6th grade however my biggest hobby was
writing and storytelling. As a 6th grader I was young and had a strong love for superheroes. This
often prompted me to make my own comic books and create my own unique superheroes.
Throughout class many students would watch me not only write these comic books but draw them
and put them together. Many were fascinated but many were also degrading towards it. Despite
some hostile feelings I continued to make them and continued to sell them around the school to
those who wanted my comic books. One day while I was drawing the cover for the superhero I
created known as "Super Smith", and yes, the superhero was created to be a representation of
myself, my English Mrs. Payne walked over and asked to see what I was doing. I was

Wonder Woman's Relationship to Feminism
History affords that American popular culture has relished the abundance of comic books. This
indulgence was heightened with the introduction of comic superheroes in the years after the Great
Depression, which largely helped to boost the low spirits of a nation just emerging from a dark
period of economic turbulence. An important fact worth noting is that most of these comic
superheroes were, sadly, only male, perhaps echoing the culture that was practiced then, with regard
to the equal acceptance of women. However, and as stated by Community Cinema (2014), this was
to change in 1941 when Harvard educated psychologist and lawyer, William M. Marston, created
Wonder Woman. So what exactly was the inspiration behind this particular line of thought? In
answering this question, perhaps it should be mentioned that the creator of the Wonder Woman as a
comic character was staunch supporter of early women rights movements. The story of the Wonder
Woman evolves through different phases; the golden age, silver age, modern age, and the new 52
which is the recent version of the comic story. The purpose of this paper is to address the
interrelationship between the character of the Wonder Woman, and modern feminism, paying special
attention to the impact on the progression of women rights. In order to comprehend the relationship
between Wonder Woman and feminism, it is important that we grasp the perspective of Marston;
that even girls would not want to be girls, so long as the female

We finally took him out! And it only took us six years" "Yeah, six years that I will never get back,

Comic Fiction And Humanistic Characters
For just under a century, comic books have given us an unparalleled medium in which we see our
favorite characters fight for good against evil. Comic historian, Bradford Wright wrote about the
influence of comics saying, "Emerging from the shifting interaction of politics, culture, audience
tastes, and the economics of publishing, comic books have helped frame a world–view and define a
sense of self for the generations who have grown up with them" (Wright, 2). However, while these
same comics are developing our moral compasses, how can we be assured that the superheroes in
the comics in which we read are completely just themselves, and honestly do they have to be to
complete the task at hand? Although morality tends to be a popular concept to address throughout
comic story lines, there is a paradoxical issue in branding our superheroes inherently good or evil –
which is all determined by an ever–changing perspective. To begin with, comic books play on the
concept of perspective, both within their artwork and the character's points of view in order to create
complex story lines that draw the reader in and allow them to connect with the somewhat humanistic
characters. Immanuel Kant, a well–known philosopher, asserts that not only does our thoughts
reflect our personal reality, but it is our experiences that shape who we are and how we see the
world. These experiences, whether good or bad, create somewhat of a lens in which we view the
world around us. Therefore, due to the

Argumentative Essay On Supergirl
Let's be honest: CBS' Supergirl – which, if you haven't been watching, is a TV show centered about
the life of comic book legend Superman's older cousin, the aforementioned (and equally powerful)
Supergirl – is no Arrow, despite its being created by the same team that created The CW's infamous
"Arrow–verse" (a.k.a. the trifecta of hit DC comics–based TV shows Arrow, The Flash and Legends
of Tomorrow). Supergirl is no Daredevil, either. And it's no Jessica Jones. But – and this is a pretty
big "But" – the title of the show gives that much away. Supergirl isn't Arrow, Daredevil or Jessica

Many of the characters seemed to start off its first season as somewhat familiar "stock" characters,
from Winn Schott as the best friend pining away for Kara in secret to Cat Grant as the haughty,
unfriendly boss to Lucy Lane as the incredibly attractive romantic rival, but unlike a lot of other
shows, Supergirl did its best to ensure that its characters weren't – aren't – tired stereotypes. Kara
doesn't return Winn's feelings, for example, and she is never made to feel guilty about that – Winn is
the one who is forced to work through his feelings for her in order to salvage their friendship. Cat is
also revealed to be so much more than her catty (ha!) façade or persona; she's brave and she's driven
and she's shown to be actively rooting for James, Kara and Lucy time and time again. Similarly,

Zoom Quotes
"I was a man broken down – who gained these extraordinary powers to become free. You. You are
the opposite. You were a free man who was given extraordinary powers – and now you must be
broken down." said Zoom, to the Flash. This quote expresses and emphasizes the importance of
circumstances to shaping an individual's character, as it shows that although the hero Flash– Barry
Allen and Zoom (Hunter Zolomon) faced similar experience, one individual became a hero – a
symbol of hope and justice while the other became a notorious killer. The difference between Zoom
and The Flash's circumstances was that The Flash didn't witness the murder of his mother and his
father wasn't the cause of the murder. Although his father was falsely accused and did get sentenced
to life imprisonment, Barry had a place to live with a caring father figure and sister who was ...

idea of love, friendship, and hope inspires individuals to become stronger and empowers them
which is an effect due to the instability of good and bad experiences in his life. Under positive

The Portrayal Of A Female Character
From helpless damsel in distresses to powerful superheroines, female characters in comics have sure
made it a long way. They have gone from underdeveloped supporting characters, such as the love
interest or sidekick to someone who owns the spotlight with their combat skills and superpowers.
This shift in portrayal is being acknowledged and praised by many comic book readers who have
been hoping for a very long time that females will one day become more realistically portrayed.
However, despite this, there are still a select few who choose to shift the focus away from the impact
superheroines are having and instead focus on their flaws and what they still consider to be "wrong"
with their portrayal. The main flaw being their appearance, specifically their unrealistic body types,
readers and nonreaders of comics each have their own opinion on how a female character should be
portrayed and they aren't afraid to fight for it. Jill Lepore, a Harvard professor and staff writer at The
New Yorker, shares her opinions on the new Marvel comic entitled A Force in her controversial
article published in The New Yorker. The article is renowned for calling out female superheroes on
looking like "porn stars" while highlighting the fact that majority of them have large breasts and
slim waists. One notable description is that of Sister Grimm as Lepore describes her as "a goth girl
[with] fishnet stockings [and a] purple–and–black bustier" (para 5). It is easy to agree with Lepore's
statement

Portrayal Of Wonder Woman
The Rise of Wonder Woman Comic books have been used as a mirror of society to show or
influence the behavior of people. Wonder Woman was a breakthrough from all the masculine
superhero franchise at the time of her conception and was created with the intentions of being
propaganda for the new type of woman during the second wave of feminism. The comic world
which was filled with male heroes, readily welcomed the first comic heroine to make an appearance
in the DC Comic book universe. "The new character was immediately successful. Marston's
idealized Amazon–capable, strong, but traditionally "feminine"–seemed to strike the perfect chord
for a country at war" (Stanley, 2005). Wonder Woman has been reinvented many times throughout
the years, since her origins to recent contemporary films. Not only were her costume changed, but
major themes and storylines were altered to "reflect both patriarchal society's need to redefine
according to cultural and economic circumstances" (Stanley, 2015). Wonder Woman has become a
successful female character and global icon, balancing traditional masculinity and femininity using
her superhero identity and her alter ego as Diana Prince. This paper will be focus on the comic book
portrayal of Wonder Woman, including an overview of Wonder Woman through the comics, how
Wonder Woman breaks and embraces gender norms through her role as a heroine and through her
alter ego Diana Prince. Overview of Wonder Woman Superheroes first made their appearance

Superheroes Psychology
The compilation of various essays in The Psychology of Superheroes by Robin S. Rosenberg
provides an interesting psychological look at comic book world characters in the context of the
contemporary and ever–growing success of the superhero genre in film and television. Themes the
book covers are super characters and their positive attributes, group dynamics, environmental
factors, introspection, gender roles, stress, and mental illness, just to name a few. The book does not
have any original characters of its own, rather picking out noteworthy figures from galleries of
superheroes and their rogues. Early on, it is concluded that superheroes have many positive facets
that readers wish to underscore; however, the novel highlights that these figures ... Show more

This movie deconstructed and celebrated the superhero genre in a mature but fun way. However,
under the layers of this homage to the super humans, I did not realize the extent of sex and gender
identity that can be analyzed through the characters' models. The Incredibles reinforces the skewed
body proportions that can be seen in superhero comics. Artist Rob Liefeld is infamous for his over–
exaggerated male bodies bulging with muscles and female bodies with unbelievably tiny waists. The
Incredibles, surprisingly, has more realistic body proportions for Mr. Incredible, but Mrs. Incredible
is a caricature of the female body shape. However, behaviorally, Mr. Incredible and Mrs. Incredible
contain characteristics that are typically considered stereotypical male behavior. The disconnect
between a super woman's body type and personality demonstrates an "embodiment of the ideal
feminine physique and ideal masculin attributes that allow her not only to be adored as a woman,
but also respected and honored like a man" (217). It bothers me that the female idealized body, small
waists and larger bust, has no practical purpose for superhero fighting, yet persists in the superhero
genre. Though The Incredibles is my favorite Pixar film, the book gave me a new perspective on it
and the female body in the superhero media. I hope as time goes on, the genre can

The Superheroes Of The Comics
Once disregarded, comic books have been progressively paving a way to the future without sexism
and racism in a time when they are becoming increasingly impactful to young adults. In 1938
Superman debuted and began the future of comic books, creating the two most influential publishers
(Adkins). In 1940 Fantomah was introduced as the first female superhero character, though she
remained a less popular character in the industry. It wasn't until the early 1960's that Wonder Woman
was created, and she became one of the most well–known female heroes among the genres. Since
then, more and more women have been depicted as heroes, mostly female versions of themselves.
With racism and sexism still a common problem in society, Marvel was the first to announce that
they would replace a major male hero completely with a female that has her own origin story, as
well as sticking with comics and allowing Falcon, an African American superhero, to take the place
of Captain America. Though resulting in mixed reviews, this step has been seen as a dive into the
right direction for equality in the comic book industry. For feminism in comic books, it seems they
are being pushed in the right directions with two major heroines taking the big screen in their own
shows. The last female superhero to have her very own television show was Wonder Woman in
1975, 27 years ago (Polo). With the releases of Jessica Jones and Supergirl, it is the first time there
have been two female super leads, not

Many people think that the fastest man in the universe is not cool. Some people might not even
know who the Flash is, but that is okay. Flash is a fictional superhero who appears in DC comic
books. Flash is amazing because he can run as fast as lightning, save people, and travel to the future.
First of all, Flash is amazing because he can run as fast as lightning. Flash is so fast that he can catch
and dodge bullets. Also, he is faster than Superman and can punch at the speed of light. His fastest
speed is 2492 Mach which is faster than the speed of light. Flash can vibrate so much that he can go

Portrayal Of Women 's Film : A Recent Post On Vanity Fair...
Portrayal of Women in Comics A recent post on Vanity Fair with title "Suicide Squad's Harley
Quinn; the Most Divisive Character in Comic book History" and the presence of wonder woman in
the movie batman versus superman in 2016, have indirectly shown that there is a surge in the
demand for more female superheroes. These female superheroes are so distinguished by some
characteristics which are peculiar to them. These projected characteristics include but not restricted
to; Freedom, dominance and loudness. These characteristics undeniably express the idea of
feminism (Erikson & Eric 1968). Unfortunately, the world has been grappling with the issues of
stereotypes and negativity in the comic industry, with females landing roles like secretary, nurse and
wife. As Maya Angelou; an African–American poet rightly put, "how important it is for us to
recognize and celebrate our heroes and she–roes". This is an important and salient point in the
society. Nevertheless, it has always been neglected due to low consciousness from the male folks
and an uncomfortable docility from the female folks (Mustafa, 2015). According to Betty Friedan, in
her book "The Feminine Mystique" (1960), she suggests that all women wanted were to be happy
homemakers. This means that women have always been represented as being indecisive, superficial
and only engaged in domestic roles in family and society. Interestingly but unfortunately enough,
these ideologies have permeated different areas in our lives.

Superman is known for his many redeeming qualities, such as being charismatic, highly strong,
intelligent, and all around an impressive being. One of his many skills includes being able to fly
wherever and whenever he pleases (usually when he is defending the Earth against evil humans or
aliens however). He can easily land, as you would assume he should be able to. Similarly, my uncle,
Harry, was like Superman when I was around the age of 5 or 6. He was strong enough to play fight
with my brother and I, had a decent amount of friends, was intelligent and willing to work towards
being certified in the culinary industry. But unlike Superman, he did not have the ability to land

The Pros And Cons Of DC Comics And DC Comics
In 1934 a man named Malcolm Wheeler–Nicholson created a comic book company named,
"Detective Comics" and shortly after this renamed the company to, "DC comics" DC comics when
on to create iconic characters like, Batman, Superman, The Flash, and many more which are still
notable to this day. Shortly after this in the in the Year 1939 a man named Martin Goodman started
his own comic book company as well. He named it, "Marvel comics" you may recognize the name
from the name from the multimillion dollar films they make based on Marvel's comic book. It has
been nearly ninety years since the both these comic book industries were founded and both
companies have a multitude of, tv shows, films, and video games based off of the stories and
characters in their comics. Personally I believe that both companies have had their fair share of both
success and failure. But any time there is two rivaling companies like these there will always be
hardcore fans who say one is better than the other. One of the biggest arguments throughout the
comic book fan based community is to determine which company between DC comics & Marvel
comics has the best tv shows, films, and video games. There are some people who believe DC
comics is the one with the best, tv shows, films, and videos and there is those who would disagree
and say Marvel is the supreme company. In this negotiation essay I will discuss both the positives
and the negatives, of boths side's, tv shows, films, and video games.

The Best And Worst Parts Of Society
Comic book characters represent the best and worst parts of society as seen through the eyes of the
writers. Heroes emanate what the writers perceive as the ideal human, someone attractive with a
strong moral code and a high tolerance for pain. Villains represent what the writers perceive as
problematic, people who are overly ambitious, immoral and represent the "other", both in
appearance and beliefs. These characterisations reflect the views of society's majority, white men,
essentially the creators and controllers of pop culture. Captain America was a hero, the epitome of
American Patriotism. He was strong, smart and morally sound and he fought American enemies, the
Nazis and communism. Magneto, from the same comic universe as Captain America, was a villain
aiming for the eradication of all non–mutants. The interesting thing about his evil acts is that they're
almost justified by his previous experiences with oppression, he's the comic book representation of a
victim fighting back and he's represented as villainous for that.
Disabilities are represented atrociously in comic books because they're represented atrociously in
pop culture. Steve Rogers was useless to the army until he was injected with an untested serum and
was no longer frail. Superman used glasses to imply vision impairment, because, no superhero could
be physically inadequate in any way, so his secret was safe. In Steve's case, his diagnoses are
represented as things that need fixing before he can be

The Superhero Genre Is Classified By A Fight Of Good Vs. Evil
The superhero genre is classified by a fight of good vs. evil. The heroes and the villains are complex
characters driven by motives that are not always black and white. Besides dealing with fictional
characters, superhero comic books often incorporate real life difficulties, such as racism, sexism,
and drug use. The storylines are driven by the superheroes fight against the forces of evil, but the
underlying story often deals with conflicting moral dilemmas and self–doubt. The superheroes have
secret identities and strut around in colorful costumes, but behind these personas, lay a story of
triumph and defeat. The true appeal of comics is not the colorful character who follows it but the
dark, gritty storylines that cause the reader to view the world and humanity in a new light. In
"Batman #134", written in 1960 by Bill Finger, a few of these requirements are addressed. This
comic follows Batman and Robin's adventure in an undisclosed South American republic. The major
conflict lies with a man named Diaz, who releases a monster known as "The Rainbow Creature."
This creature terrorizes the village until Batman uses his world–class detective skills to defeat the
beast. The storyline is quickly wrapped up in a span of nine pages, and the childish tone of the
comic causes the intrigue of the story to be lost on the reader. On the other hand, Batman: Ego,
written by Darwyn Cooke in 2000, deals with the harsh atmosphere of Gotham. The comic tells the
story of a wounded Batman and

Superman 1 Comparison
There are many similarities and differences between the "Superman 1" and "Man of Steel" film
posters. These will be compared with reference to the film posters as a whole.
Both the "Superman 1" and "Man of Steel" posters depict the main character of the film, Superman,
in one way or another, whether it is through the well–known symbol or Superman flying through the
sky himself. The differences between the two films' posters are apparent. The "Superman 1" posters
show just the Superman symbol and Superman flying vertically in the sky. The "Man of Steel"
posters show much more, one shows Superman flying horizontally with a close–up of his face,
showing his emotions and the other shows him hovering above a decimated cityscape, the angle and
lighting also allow the viewer to register the emotions. The "Superman 1" posters don't allow the
audience to register what is going through Superman's head as he flies to the sky. ... Show more

Power: The Idea Of Having A Super Power
Just thinking about the idea of having a super power can sound attractive or appealing to some
people. You can even see this desire of having a power in some children wanting to be their favorite
super hero. The need or wish of being able to do something supernatural is something that everyone
has wished, at least during one point of their lives.
The super power I chose is invincibility. As you may know, every super power has a weakness or
flaw. Even the strongest super hero, such as hulk and super man had a weakness. They could be
made weak in a matter of seconds. And that was what caught my attention. So first I was thinking if
it was possible to combine powers in order to help cancel out that weakness, but that was the
moment that I realized that the best power is having invincibility. ... Show more content on

Differences Of Superheroes : The Flash And The Green Arrow
Superheroes almost all have the same goal: to save their city. Although they all seem to have the
same goal, they are not the same person. One superhero might have social anxiety, while another
superhero is a social butterfly. No superhero has the same exact same superpower or personality. In
the Detective Comics series, there are over ten thousand characters, including superhero's. Two of
my favorite superheroes are The Flash and The Green Arrow. Although the Flash and The Green
Arrow seem to be very different, when taking a closer look, the reader will find how similar they are
in becoming superheroes to save their city, becoming orphans because of who they are, and having
troubled past. When taking a first glance at The Flash and The Green Arrow, readers will find that
they are very different. The Flash uses super speed to fight crime in Central City, while The Green
Arrow fights crime using a bow and arrow in Starling City, later named Star City. There are a few
differences between the two, as found with any two superheroes. The Green Arrow killed people
before realizing from a colleague that there was another way to find justice with criminals. The
Flash, on the other hand, has never killed anyone. He does not believe that killing is the way to
create justice. When The Green Arrow began his crusade, he was alone. He had no help from
anyone. This changed gradually when, slowly, one by one, more people joined the team. The Flash
was in a unique situation. After he was

Example Of Identity In Beowulf
LAR #1.3
In the past two weeks we have managed to finish an old english poetry, Beowulf and watch a
documentary/film about evolution of superhero comic books. As we read the book, we were
acquainted with the customs, culture, and life of the Anglo–Saxons. "Ancestral Heritage and
Individual Reputation" were the novel's prime factors. In Beowulf, I have noticed that every
character is introduced by being referred to their family lineage and as their fathers' son or daughter.
Fame played a prominent role, because that's how the warrior or individual is evoked after death and
even when alive. Most characters pursue to live up to their ancestor's standards because of the pride
they have for how they acted boldly. Beowulf was very exaggerated, but that principal helped
readers like me to understand the importance of a scene or character. There was many repetitions
through this poem, which helped us have a fixed thought of what this novel was about. It repeated
scenarios and descriptions of a character countless times so the person reading it knows what was
the novel mainly about. I feel like the repetition and exaggeration helped this english poetry be
passed down through generations and stay alive currently. It gave us a picture of what the customs
and life was like in Scandinavia for the Anglo–Saxons. Kinship, Brotherhood, Ancestry, and Glory
was the essential motifs in my opinion. I personally enjoyed reading literature out of my comfort
zone. I don't read poetry often

The Superhero Effect: Idealism and Stereotypes in Comic Books
In our society, certain ideals are held in high regard. Individuals relentlessly pursue these ideals to
achieve a perceived perfection. These principles are often depicted in media that further glorifies
and establishes a desire to pursue these paragons. In a medium such as comic books, however, these
standards and perceptions are heavily distorted by the characterizations and settings. Particularly, the
superhero genre absorbs the ideals we strive towards and regurgitates them in an extreme and
unrealistic manner. The superhero genre is often reflective of societal changes in ideas and morals.
These ideals are then molded into misleading representations that influence the behaviors of
viewers. Comic books absorb elements of our society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The superhero genre, despite presenting the metamorphosis of our enemy, misrepresents our enemy
and influences people's perceptions of the enemy. Furthermore, the superhero genre heavily
endorses the concept of sexism in its stories. Women are misrepresented as feeble and weak without
the aid of men. They are often simply characterized as sex objects that are grotesquely unrealistic
and disproportionate compared to the average woman. " Women must either be unrecognizably
masculine or unfaithful nymphomaniacs... they must be eroticized and mercilessly beaten"
(Siddiqui). Comic books make every effort to cater to the male audience by providing sexualized
females who wear skimpy outfits and show lots of cleavage. It has become the staple of the
superhero genre to show extremely skinny, very busty female figures. Rather than focusing on
inherent qualities of intelligence, determination, and tenacity, comic book writers focus on
presenting so–called attractive women. However, these depictions have a stringent impact on the
women viewership and the young girls who are surrounded by such ideas. These people begin
feeling worthless in comparison to the superior men who seem to always save the day. In showing
Doctor Doom caging Morgan le Fay (Michelinie 37), comic books depict men as easily able to
outwit and defeat female characters. Even depictions of female superheroes seem to emphasize their
weakness in comparison

The Superformation Of Female Superheroes In The Wonder Woman
DC comics, illustrated the comic book, Wonder Woman, that strive for female superheroes to be
envisioned with great empowering messages for the other females who enjoy reading comics. The
female superhero, Wonder Woman, is given empowering qualities such as leadership and devotion.
Although, Wonder Woman is given these empowering qualities, the comic book artists clothed this
female character with clothing that sexualizes them greatly because of the amount of skin that is
being revealed. The suits that these female superheroes are shown to be wearing stimulates this
sensual excitement to the male audience which erupts these superheroes to receive a greater amount
of attention than those female superheroes who do not necessarily reveal as much skin. Similar to
the group of girls described in Rat Queens, the female superhero, Wonder Woman, contributes to the
way these adolescent girls are being judged for the appearance they should resemble. According to
"An Analysis of Embodiment Among Six Superheroes in DC Comics", the author, Edward Avery–
Natale, has incorporated astonishing research on the presentation of female superheroes in comic
books. Avery–Natale stated that "Lips, facial expressions, and hairstyles were also coded using the
guide's discussion on how to make women appear "sultry"..." [Avery–Natale, 100] which goes to
show that female superheroes are created to be shown as physically and sexually pleasing so that
these heroes can attract more readers. Comic books

Overtime Character Analysis

  • 1. Overtime Character Analysis Many people in life do not sit and think about the consequences that would be the outcome of their actions. Upon approaching this show, people would see that it is just another superhero show where the hero beats the bad guy. In a sense, it is that kind of show, but the show is more than those stereotypical hero stories. Throughout Arrow, the protagonist Oliver Queen has problem accepting for what he has become. Overtime, Oliver was forced to live a rough life because he found himself trapped on an island; his rough experience of trying to survive changed him into a type of person who would easily kill a person without a second thought. It conflicted with his lifestyle once he was able to return home because he was trying to play two roles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the show, Oliver decides to "plays the roles of investigator, interrogator, judge, jury, and executioner" (Beard). He decides whether or not a man gets to see the end of the day. For example, during an ultimatum that forced Oliver to decide between the lives of two people, he chose to save the person who was closer to him. This resulted into an upbringing of an enemy named Slade. Slade wanted to get revenge and try to kill Oliver loved ones as a duty towards the other person. Slade then forced to choose between the life between his mother or sister. In society, nobody should decide who should live or die. The reason for that is because it creates bias and it the creates a problem. If one were to choose one, then the other would die and they people would cry for the dead. People do not realize that their actions to judge one could affect not just the person, but the people around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Impact Of Comics And Superheroes On The American Society Impact of Comics and Superheroes on the American SocietyA superhero is an anecdotal character of extraordinary physical prowess committed to demonstrations of derring–do in general society interest. Since the introduction of Superman in 1938, stories of superheroes from short to long episode adventures; have ruled American comic books and traversed into other media. These superheroes and comics have been used to display both negative and positive social and cultural values in the American society. Captain America, , Superman, Simon Baz and Kamala Khan are most prevalent in comic books and they are role models to many teenagers and adults in the society. This paper demonstrates how these comics are useful medium through their heroic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (2002, 47–48)". The use of archetypal elements in distinguishing heroes and villains is not is largely used in superhero comics and they appear in a variety of popular fiction, revealing the values of the hegemonic culture through its villains. When discussing the phenomenon of a popular culture item reflecting the sentiments of a nation, one should not uncritically equal the superhero with America. Despite the fact that the superhero can be said to typify the national character that is particularly America (Reynolds, 1992, 18), one ought to be aware that the qualities and ideals anticipated on to the hero are usually those of the dominant, hegemonic culture, whereas the villains usually possess those qualities which the hegemonic culture views as undesirable. This is a typical narrative in well known fiction, discussed in several comics for example Muslim Girl and the Green Lantern Corps, where the hero is given all the positive social values while the villain portrays the negative social vices for example racism and sexism. This archetyping is important since racism has been a common vice in the American society. The early 1960s was the time of a major reevaluation of youth culture as an economic, social, and political force. Embodying these new advancement were the alienated anti–heroes of Marvel Comics whose quirks spoke of modifying of the formulas for comic book superheroes. • 3. Will Eisner's A Contract With God To tell the truth, at the time I was registering for this course, there was nowhere on the course title that stated graphic novels. It simply said "introduction to fiction". So you can imagine how surprised I was on the first day of class when you handed and read the syllabus to us. I had never read a comic book or a graphic novel much less take a class on any of them. I kept asking myself whether I was in the right class. The length of the syllabus and the course load did not help matters either, and I remember you telling us not to get intimidated by the contents of the syllabus and that once we get started, we will realize that the workload is not as heavy as it looks on paper. I am a true novice in the world of comics especially superhero comics. I have not even seen the superman movie yet. I confess that I only read the book because I was required to. Moving ahead in time to 1985, this started the Modern Age of comics and during that time the comic book genre took a dramatic turn. We had just come from the Silver Age, which was wacky and crazy now to the Modern Age that changes back to its roots of psychotic Joker and dark origin stories. This is shown in Batman Begins, when Bruce is about to kill the man who murdered his parents his friend Rachel Dawes found him with a gun about to execute his plan Rachel says " It's not who we are but what we do that defines us" (Nolan,Batman Begins). This quote sums up a trend in modern movies, we now see characters as disabled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The question of based on multiple texts/ entertainment ( movies, TV) how has the meaning or requirements for the island archetype change throughout time has been answered throughout this paper. Let's break this down one more time. From the nature of the island archetype we can see that C.G Jung created this for insight on a character which probably is a reason why many of today's origin stories model after this archetype. The Odyssey and the TV show Arrow were clearly made in seperate times, and although they have differences, the two stories share similarities, so just look at how the characters develop. Yes they develop at different times, but the way is basicly the same. The two Batman stories really show a difference, we see a major emotional change from a confident playboy millionaire to a angery almost murderer. Finally, we sum this up and see that the island archetype origin story is basically essential to a character's development. C.G Jung painted the way for literature for growth and new ideas, but he didn't realize that his idea, the island archetype was the revolutionary idea that used the entire paint can of the ... • 5. Mental Disorders In Superheroes Superheroes are no doubt a big part of popular culture in modern times. Films have popularised the comic book community's favorite and non favorite characters. Some people believe that these superheroes are the best members of society and most mentally stable but, a large amount of these heroes show signs of strong mental disorders. What many people don't understand is these heroes are struggling with things other than the villains, many of these heroes have mental disabilities some not so severe and some are who they are. Villains also show many signs so why not explore their minds as well? Deadpool, Batman, Iron man, the Joker, and many more suffer from these problems and the proof is in the writing. A man who could be considered the killer Batman of the Marvel universe who has a problem with people is Francis Castle Jr. or as you may know him the Punisher. Now, out of all the characters in this paper, I myself am convinced that out of the heroes in this paper, Franky here is probably the most violent and likes to be so. It's been in several comics that Frank will torture people to get answers as well as taking the job of judge, jury, and executioner when he doesn't have a criminal tied to a chair. The Punisher stories all focus of Frank stopping bad guys in aggressive and dangerously harsh ways just to keep them off the streets. Mr. Castle uses his anger to accomplish his deadly tasks. On top of being a borderline alcoholic which will bring aggression to the front of anybody struggling with anger management, Frank is a veteran of war, meaning he is a violent man to begin with due to having ... • 7. Batman Hero Heroic For decades, I have been obsessed with Batman. There I said it! In the '60's I watched everyday, at the same Bat time on the same Bat channel the Caped Crusader [Adam West] give The Joker and other villains their due justice. Since 2000 we've had 25 superhero movies from Marvel and DC. There are 19 more Marvel and DC movies confirmed and 3 unconfirmed movies due between 2017 to 2020. DC Comics has six televisions show on that have been airing since 2012 with nine currently in development. They inspire us. They each have a human side that struggles with the same day–to– day obstacles and events we struggle with. From work to love. We watch those events unfold and we see them cope, fail and win as a human. Then [drum roll] out of the blue, or as scripted by the writer, an emergency strikes, and they step up. Even stepping up as a superhuman we watch as they attempt to tackle the problem. Many times, if not always, failing on their first attempt. What makes them a Superhero, more then even their superpowers, is their ability to believe in themselves, and continue to fight the fight. Face their fear, and overcome their battles. • 9. Comic Books : Characters In Society Throughout the years comic books have become the beacon of hope civilization needed to overcome the toughest of times. From the Civil war to Nuclear Warfare heroes were created for the purpose of keeping children's happiness from fainting into darkness. Batman, Superman, Thor, Hulk and She– Thor were the beacon of light of my childhood and the reason why I dreamt about a better civilization. "You humans slaughter each other because of the color of your skin, or your faith, or your politics, or for no reason at all, too many of you hate easily as you draw breath"–Magneto. This quote was once said by the strongest villain in comic book history as he described humans in the war against Mutans. Comic books have the power to make even famous of people realize how amazing they are as Nicolas Cage described "Are modern mythology, they reflect our fears, embody our ideals, and personalized our culture." Our civilization has created movies, books, action figures and tv shows as they ingrained comic books into our everyday culture. We identify heroes by their persona as we have become to known Superman "as the man of steel" and Batman " as the Dark Knight" these characters have paved the way for new beginnings, ideals that weren't imaginable at the time they were created. • 10. Batman Vs Superman Research Paper Batman and Superman All superheroes have at least one thing in common– they all fight crime and save people; however, Batman and superman have more in common than that. They even have more similarities than being the best known and loved supermen of all time. They have more similarities than they might like to admit. These men have small things and big things in common with each other. Batman and superman share aspects from their personal, work, and overall lives. One thing that these two superheroes share qualities of is their personal lives. Both sets of parents were murdered when the heroes were very young. Neither of the men had any siblings, but they were raised in caring households by nurturing guardians. They each have a given name that they are not referred to as often as their iconic hero name. Superman's adoptive parents gave him the name of Clark, Clark Kent. Batman's actual birth given name is Bruce Wayne. Both men have a ridiculously large amount of wealth. Batman always had money, because he was born into a rich household. Superman also has a large sum of money, but he did not grow up with loads of cash. • 11. My Favorite Superheros Ever since I was a little girl I have looked up to and loved superheroes. Most of the superheroes are from Detective Comics or DC Comics for short (yes, that is Detective Comics Comics.) Nightwing has been my favorite superhero for as long as I can remember. Obviously, Wonder Woman as well, she is a big reason why I am a feminist. The Flash has been one of my favorite superheroes since I was super young. However, I do not care so much for the second Flash, Barry Allen or even the original Flash, Jay Garrick. I have always preferred the third Flash, Wally West. My favorite Green Lantern is John Stewart. To me, all of the superheroes in DC Comics are my favorite superheroes, but those ones stand out the most to me. Not Marvel, they suck. Nightwing. Dick ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soon after the adoption of the nine year old boy, he became Batman's first sidekick to use the name "Robin." The first time I ever seen Dick Grayson was when I was around three years old in the anime–styled cartoon titled, Teen Titans. I absolutely adored that show and I still do. However, looking back on it and rewatching episodes, they really made him be a lot like Batman, which is fine if you do not know the comic book character because I did not at the time. His character in the comics is definitely different than how they portrayed him in the show. He is more outgoing than Batman and is very sarcastic. He will talk to his enemies and distract them that way. He is not a depressed boy in a costume trying to scare people, that is Batman. To me, Batman just does not have any personality compared to Robin. I just wish they would have portrayed him better than they did. Anyhow, after years of being Robin, Dick Grayson wanted to be an independent superhero. At age eighteen, he made that happen by getting an all new suit that was all black with a blue bird on it (unless we are talking about the original Nightwing suit because that was light ... • 12. Analysis Of Watchmen By Alan Moore Being gifted with the term of "being a hero" holds tremendous power in our culture; children write cute assignments on who they look up to, adolescents watch and read about heroes in their entertainment, and even adults have personal or fictional heroes they will never get too old to stop idolizing. In our society, we 've been raised to associate this word, "Hero", to a perfect being; however, the evolving times and entertainment industry has made the "hero" a more complex and multifaceted character. From Jerry Siegle 's kid friendly "Superman", to Frank Miller 's night– dwelling "Batman", and lastly to our topic of discussion, Alan Moore 's "Watchmen" with its conflicted depiction of characters blurring the line between being a hero or a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main characters are Jupiter, Nite Owl, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Comedian, and Ozymandias. Foremost the best example of a "hero" actually being a terrible person is the Comedian in "Watchmen". Though he is considered a patriotic "hero", he rapes and kills women, he loves violence and killing, he 's a drunk, and he doesn 't have a single kind line among all the insults he hurls at other people in the entire comic. However even with all this, he is still considered a patriotic vigilante who is a "hero" employed legally by the government after all other masked heroes where banned by "The Keene Act". Juspeczyc, "Jupiter", is able to show several themes that would have never been acceptable in the previous decades of comic books including sexual encounters with Daniel and Dr. Manhattan at a young age, promiscuous attire, and insubordination when arguing with her mother and others. The 1980s still slightly stunk of female oppression lingering from past decades, but women were starting to take a stand and become a force of their own which I believe is shown through this female character and many others in comics since the 80s in order to appeal to a female and male audience. Nite Owl, or Daniel, is the most morally sound character who tries to be a good person in the group of masked anti–heroes called the "Watchmen." It was with the good intent of ... Comics: A Better Means To An Artistic End Essay Comics: A Better Means To An Artistic End If a line of symmetry were to be drawn down the center of the paper, it would seem that each character rests within his environment about to collide with the other. Even without words, a vivid story begins to formulate in my mind, and hopefully I share the artist's vision. Comic book art is the Pez dispenser of modernism. The aesthetics of this accessible medium walk side by side with pop culture. No other art form can reach so many people due to its incredible volume. By simplifying the subject matter enough, the artist makes a representation that can apply to everyone. Perhaps those who identify with Charlie Brown can do so because of his lack of detailed, discernible features. Charlie Brown can look like any one of us, representing universal low self– esteem. Mike Allred represents the population of comic artists who use the most simplistic style of symbols. The piece that I have chosen to look at is a pin–up he did for a collection of short Batman stories. A "pin–up" gives the artist complete freedom to express human nature through one image without a plot that needs to conform to the character's continuity. The villain in this isolated battle is surrounded by symbols. Although I have never actually seen a standard alarm clock set on sticks of dynamite, I know this symbol means a time bomb. And the proximity of the little hand of the clock to its starting point probably means that Batman has little time left. I realize that the color of cigarette smoke does not resemble the color of human skin, but in this context I see that the uniformity of color of the smoke and the character's skin should be disregarded. What Makes A Superheros Superheros are Lit/Superheros Characteristics When I was 10 years old I really got into superheros when I saw Batman begins for the first time I loved the fact that Batman went through so much training to become a hero to find who killed his parents and Batman was a billionaire who wanted to help his city come back to the way it was before his parents died. The best superheroes have certain traits that make them unique from other superheroes for example superheroes have some sort of power or have a great story line also they have double lives keeping two identities. Some superheroes have superpowers and some do not, but some of the best superheroes have powers such as the Flash, Superman and Deadpool. Flash is a superhero who has the ability to run as fast as the speed of light this makes him a great superhero because he has to learn to live with his powers and keep his powers out of his real life and not let anyone know he's the Flash. Deadpool has the ability to regrow body parts this makes him a great hero because he does not care for his powers he wants to get rid of them, but he acts like a villain, but is a hero so he adds comedy to his character which allows people to connect with him more. I have always had a passion for learning new things from educational books or just reading a new exciting story in every novel I picked up. I have a multitude of fond memories of books I read and lessons I learned, but one instance I consider more impactful than the others. This moment came when my 6th grade English teacher helped me write my own book. It may sound crazy that a mere 6th grader is attempting to write a book, but at the time it was a huge deal to me. I have had many hobbies throughout my life and find myself consistently picking up new hobbies. In 6th grade however my biggest hobby was writing and storytelling. As a 6th grader I was young and had a strong love for superheroes. This often prompted me to make my own comic books and create my own unique superheroes. Throughout class many students would watch me not only write these comic books but draw them and put them together. Many were fascinated but many were also degrading towards it. Despite some hostile feelings I continued to make them and continued to sell them around the school to those who wanted my comic books. One day while I was drawing the cover for the superhero I created known as "Super Smith", and yes, the superhero was created to be a representation of myself, my English Mrs. Payne walked over and asked to see what I was doing. • 16. Wonder Woman's Relationship to Feminism History affords that American popular culture has relished the abundance of comic books. This indulgence was heightened with the introduction of comic superheroes in the years after the Great Depression, which largely helped to boost the low spirits of a nation just emerging from a dark period of economic turbulence. An important fact worth noting is that most of these comic superheroes were, sadly, only male, perhaps echoing the culture that was practiced then, with regard to the equal acceptance of women. However, and as stated by Community Cinema (2014), this was to change in 1941 when Harvard educated psychologist and lawyer, William M. Marston, created Wonder Woman. So what exactly was the inspiration behind this particular line of thought? In answering this question, perhaps it should be mentioned that the creator of the Wonder Woman as a comic character was staunch supporter of early women rights movements. The story of the Wonder Woman evolves through different phases; the golden age, silver age, modern age, and the new 52 which is the recent version of the comic story. The purpose of this paper is to address the interrelationship between the character of the Wonder Woman, and modern feminism, paying special attention to the impact on the progression of women rights. In order to comprehend the relationship between Wonder Woman and feminism, it is important that we grasp the perspective of Marston; that even girls would not want to be girls, so long as the female ... The idea of him not being a worry for me is something that I never thought would happen. "We did it, Mach! We finally took him out! • 18. Comic Fiction And Humanistic Characters For just under a century, comic books have given us an unparalleled medium in which we see our favorite characters fight for good against evil. Comic historian, Bradford Wright wrote about the influence of comics saying, "Emerging from the shifting interaction of politics, culture, audience tastes, and the economics of publishing, comic books have helped frame a world–view and define a sense of self for the generations who have grown up with them" (Wright, 2). However, while these same comics are developing our moral compasses, how can we be assured that the superheroes in the comics in which we read are completely just themselves, and honestly do they have to be to complete the task at hand? Although morality tends to be a popular concept to address throughout comic story lines, there is a paradoxical issue in branding our superheroes inherently good or evil – which is all determined by an ever–changing perspective. To begin with, comic books play on the concept of perspective, both within their artwork and the character's points of view in order to create complex story lines that draw the reader in and allow them to connect with the somewhat humanistic characters. Immanuel Kant, a well–known philosopher, asserts that not only does our thoughts reflect our personal reality, but it is our experiences that shape who we are and how we see the world. These experiences, whether good or bad, create somewhat of a lens in which we view the world around us. Therefore, due to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Supergirl is no Daredevil, either. And it's no Jessica Jones. But – and this is a pretty big "But" – the title of the show gives that much away. Supergirl isn't Arrow, Daredevil or Jessica Jones. Kara doesn't return Winn's feelings, for example, and she is never made to feel guilty about that – Winn is the one who is forced to work through his feelings for her in order to salvage their friendship. Cat is also revealed to be so much more than her catty (ha!) façade or persona; she's brave and she's driven and she's shown to be actively rooting for James, Kara and Lucy time and time again. • 21. The Portrayal Of A Female Character From helpless damsel in distresses to powerful superheroines, female characters in comics have sure made it a long way. They have gone from underdeveloped supporting characters, such as the love interest or sidekick to someone who owns the spotlight with their combat skills and superpowers. This shift in portrayal is being acknowledged and praised by many comic book readers who have been hoping for a very long time that females will one day become more realistically portrayed. However, despite this, there are still a select few who choose to shift the focus away from the impact superheroines are having and instead focus on their flaws and what they still consider to be "wrong" with their portrayal. The main flaw being their appearance, specifically their unrealistic body types, readers and nonreaders of comics each have their own opinion on how a female character should be portrayed and they aren't afraid to fight for it. Jill Lepore, a Harvard professor and staff writer at The New Yorker, shares her opinions on the new Marvel comic entitled A Force in her controversial article published in The New Yorker. The article is renowned for calling out female superheroes on looking like "porn stars" while highlighting the fact that majority of them have large breasts and slim waists. • 22. Portrayal Of Wonder Woman The Rise of Wonder Woman Comic books have been used as a mirror of society to show or influence the behavior of people. Wonder Woman was a breakthrough from all the masculine superhero franchise at the time of her conception and was created with the intentions of being propaganda for the new type of woman during the second wave of feminism. The comic world which was filled with male heroes, readily welcomed the first comic heroine to make an appearance in the DC Comic book universe. "The new character was immediately successful. Marston's idealized Amazon–capable, strong, but traditionally "feminine"–seemed to strike the perfect chord for a country at war" (Stanley, 2005). Wonder Woman has been reinvented many times throughout the years, since her origins to recent contemporary films. Not only were her costume changed, but major themes and storylines were altered to "reflect both patriarchal society's need to redefine according to cultural and economic circumstances" (Stanley, 2015). Wonder Woman has become a successful female character and global icon, balancing traditional masculinity and femininity using her superhero identity and her alter ego as Diana Prince. This movie deconstructed and celebrated the superhero genre in a mature but fun way. However, under the layers of this homage to the super humans, I did not realize the extent of sex and gender identity that can be analyzed through the characters' models. The Incredibles reinforces the skewed body proportions that can be seen in superhero comics. Artist Rob Liefeld is infamous for his over– exaggerated male bodies bulging with muscles and female bodies with unbelievably tiny waists. The Incredibles, surprisingly, has more realistic body proportions for Mr. Incredible, but Mrs. Incredible is a caricature of the female body shape. However, behaviorally, Mr. Incredible and Mrs. Incredible contain characteristics that are typically considered stereotypical male behavior. The disconnect between a super woman's body type and personality demonstrates an "embodiment of the ideal feminine physique and ideal masculin attributes that allow her not only to be adored as a woman, but also respected and honored like a man" (217). It bothers me that the female idealized body, small waists and larger bust, has no practical purpose for superhero fighting, yet persists in the superhero genre. • 25. The Superheroes Of The Comics Once disregarded, comic books have been progressively paving a way to the future without sexism and racism in a time when they are becoming increasingly impactful to young adults. In 1938 Superman debuted and began the future of comic books, creating the two most influential publishers (Adkins). In 1940 Fantomah was introduced as the first female superhero character, though she remained a less popular character in the industry. It wasn't until the early 1960's that Wonder Woman was created, and she became one of the most well–known female heroes among the genres. Since then, more and more women have been depicted as heroes, mostly female versions of themselves. With racism and sexism still a common problem in society, Marvel was the first to announce that they would replace a major male hero completely with a female that has her own origin story, as well as sticking with comics and allowing Falcon, an African American superhero, to take the place of Captain America. Though resulting in mixed reviews, this step has been seen as a dive into the right direction for equality in the comic book industry. For feminism in comic books, it seems they are being pushed in the right directions with two major heroines taking the big screen in their own shows. Portrayal of Women in Comics A recent post on Vanity Fair with title "Suicide Squad's Harley Quinn; the Most Divisive Character in Comic book History" and the presence of wonder woman in the movie batman versus superman in 2016, have indirectly shown that there is a surge in the demand for more female superheroes. These female superheroes are so distinguished by some characteristics which are peculiar to them. These projected characteristics include but not restricted to; Freedom, dominance and loudness. These characteristics undeniably express the idea of feminism (Erikson & Eric 1968). Unfortunately, the world has been grappling with the issues of stereotypes and negativity in the comic industry, with females landing roles like secretary, nurse and wife. As Maya Angelou; an African–American poet rightly put, "how important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she–roes". This is an important and salient point in the society. Nevertheless, it has always been neglected due to low consciousness from the male folks and an uncomfortable docility from the female folks (Mustafa, 2015). According to Betty Friedan, in her book "The Feminine Mystique" (1960), she suggests that all women wanted were to be happy homemakers. This means that women have always been represented as being indecisive, superficial and only engaged in domestic roles in family and society. • 30. The Best And Worst Parts Of Society Comic book characters represent the best and worst parts of society as seen through the eyes of the writers. Heroes emanate what the writers perceive as the ideal human, someone attractive with a strong moral code and a high tolerance for pain. Villains represent what the writers perceive as problematic, people who are overly ambitious, immoral and represent the "other", both in appearance and beliefs. These characterisations reflect the views of society's majority, white men, essentially the creators and controllers of pop culture. Captain America was a hero, the epitome of American Patriotism. He was strong, smart and morally sound and he fought American enemies, the Nazis and communism. Magneto, from the same comic universe as Captain America, was a villain aiming for the eradication of all non–mutants. The interesting thing about his evil acts is that they're almost justified by his previous experiences with oppression, he's the comic book representation of a victim fighting back and he's represented as villainous for that. Disabilities are represented atrociously in comic books because they're represented atrociously in pop culture. Steve Rogers was useless to the army until he was injected with an untested serum and was no longer frail. • 31. The Superhero Genre Is Classified By A Fight Of Good Vs. Evil The superhero genre is classified by a fight of good vs. evil. The heroes and the villains are complex characters driven by motives that are not always black and white. Besides dealing with fictional characters, superhero comic books often incorporate real life difficulties, such as racism, sexism, and drug use. The storylines are driven by the superheroes fight against the forces of evil, but the underlying story often deals with conflicting moral dilemmas and self–doubt. The superheroes have secret identities and strut around in colorful costumes, but behind these personas, lay a story of triumph and defeat. The true appeal of comics is not the colorful character who follows it but the dark, gritty storylines that cause the reader to view the world and humanity in a new light. In "Batman #134", written in 1960 by Bill Finger, a few of these requirements are addressed. This comic follows Batman and Robin's adventure in an undisclosed South American republic. The major conflict lies with a man named Diaz, who releases a monster known as "The Rainbow Creature." This creature terrorizes the village until Batman uses his world–class detective skills to defeat the beast. The storyline is quickly wrapped up in a span of nine pages, and the childish tone of the comic causes the intrigue of the story to be lost on the reader. On the other hand, Batman: Ego, written by Darwyn Cooke in 2000, deals with the harsh atmosphere of Gotham. The comic tells the story of a wounded Batman and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Example Of Identity In Beowulf LAR #1.3 In the past two weeks we have managed to finish an old english poetry, Beowulf and watch a documentary/film about evolution of superhero comic books. As we read the book, we were acquainted with the customs, culture, and life of the Anglo–Saxons. "Ancestral Heritage and Individual Reputation" were the novel's prime factors. In Beowulf, I have noticed that every character is introduced by being referred to their family lineage and as their fathers' son or daughter. Fame played a prominent role, because that's how the warrior or individual is evoked after death and even when alive. Most characters pursue to live up to their ancestor's standards because of the pride they have for how they acted boldly. Beowulf was very exaggerated, but that principal helped readers like me to understand the importance of a scene or character. There was many repetitions through this poem, which helped us have a fixed thought of what this novel was about. It repeated scenarios and descriptions of a character countless times so the person reading it knows what was the novel mainly about. I feel like the repetition and exaggeration helped this english poetry be passed down through generations and stay alive currently. It gave us a picture of what the customs and life was like in Scandinavia for the Anglo–Saxons. Kinship, Brotherhood, Ancestry, and Glory was the essential motifs in my opinion.
