Martin Watson Stencil
Many street artists now use stencils to display their pieces on a wall canvas. Stencil art requires more preparation as the design has to prepared and
cut on a sturdy material (i.e. cardboard) so that it can quickly be sprayed over. This results in more intricate designs and show more contrast. Banksy is
a famous– yet anonymous– is an example of a street artist who uses stencils to portray his urban art across the streets of London. His style of work is
usually dominated with black and white and sometimes complimented with a splash of colour. This allows the viewer to understand the concept of his
work much better as they realise the main focus of the piece. His art works usually involve a political message and is sometimes reinforced
humorously. For instance, the image on the left raises awareness of the increasing interest and obsession and technology in younger generations. It
suggests a scary future– if not already a reality– that the source of happiness will come from the 'no. of likes' we receive on our social media pages.
Martin Watson is a young Norwegian artist who is inspired by artists like Jose Parla and Cy Twombly. "His artistic expression is a subtle mixture of

"Today, the use of the canvas as support of his artistic expression, far from restricting the offers him a new freedom. Self–taught artist, his work is
based on the audacity and singularity without losing its urban artistic roots. It is played for the collection of pre–established codes and rules." His
work– unlike most urban street artists– are pictures filled with colours so that the need for words as a form of expression is minimised. His works do
not need stencils and are sometimes improvised; capturing the beauty and 'in the moment' emotions most artists

Banksy: Artist or Lawbreaker? Essay
Banksy: Artist or Lawbreaker? Art is a persons' opinion. The definition of art is the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic
principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. There is no real definition for what is beautiful or appealing to the
human eye. Banksy is said to be an artist by some and a graffiti lawbreaker by others. Basically, it is up to the person to define Banksy as someone
who is doing the right thing verses doing the wrong thing. Banksy creates his graffiti pictures to make a stand for what he believes is the right way to
look at controversial issues. Some people may not like Banksy's graffiti because they do not have the same views as him. Some people might ... Show

This, to me, shows that he creates his art for the public to view not to make money off of his artwork. As Banksy's artwork spread throughout the
world the prices of his paintings went up as well. A painting of a girl in an astronaut suite holding a yellow bird sold for $576,000. After this
picture sold Banksy posted on his website a painting of an art auction with the words, "I can't believe you morons actually buy this shit." He calls
the art world, "the biggest joke going ... a rest home for the over privileged, the pretentious, and the weak." Banksy takes pride in telling people his
opinion of their actions. His website post against people buying his paintings for a lot of money is a sign of just how much he dislikes the use of
money in the world. I think this proves that the goal in creating his graffiti art is not to make a lot of money but to let his opinion be heard on all
kinds of controversial topics. His strong opinions may also be because of his anonymous identity. Banksy or as said to be shortened for Robert Banks
is the graffiti artist who will never be caught. His technique of stenciling makes it easier for him to get the job done fast and efficiently. Banksy states
that being anonymous can be "crippling" and hard to do. In an anonymous email said to be from Banksy he states,
"I have been called a sellout, but I give away thousands of paintings for free, how many more do you want?" he wrote. "I think it was

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Linocut
Linocut–A block made of linoleum
–Carving tools –Paper fabrics
Linocut is a form of relief printing in which the artist cuts a design into the surface of the block. Then a mirror image is created when the artist places
a paper or fabric over the surface and presses down with a hand or a roller. The raised parts of the piece transfer over on to the paper or fabric to create
the overall desired print. Linocut has both benefits and drawbacks as a form of printmaking. The major benefit of this form of art is that it is softer
than wood making it easier to carve and use. Another benefit is that color can be added to the prints. However, there are several drawbacks of using
linocut such as linoleum "wears down more quickly under pressure, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The artist first coats the metal plate in an acid–resistant substance known as ground and is drawn on. The artist then uses a sharp tool or etching
needle down to the plate. "Hard grounds are employed for finely detailed linear work. Soft ground can also be used, and virtually any tool can be
used to expose the plate and resembles crayon and pencil drawings" (Sayre, 2012). Whichever ground is used by the artist is then placed in an acid
bath. "The acid eats, or etches, into the plate where the lines have been drawn; the longer the exposed plate is left in the bath, and the stronger the
solution, the greater the width and depth of the etched line" (Sayre, 2012). An artist can also create a way in stopping out a section by using
varnishes or ground over the etched surface. Once the plate is finished being exposed to acid, it is inked and printed. Etching has both benefits and
drawbacks. Some of the benefits to etching are that it is a fluid and free process and it is able to capture the sense of immediacy as a sketch.
However, some drawbacks to etching include "it is a medium that requires calculations and planning, an ability to manipulate chemicals, and a
willingness to risk losing everything in order to achieve the desired effect" (Sayre,

New York City's Concrete Jungle
The graffiti I picked is a plane white flower painted on a dark green board. The flower is short and almost invincible to a bystander who is on a rush,
no bigger than a notebook. Place right on the the edge between the floor and the board, this gives it an effect of realism, as if it was an actual flower
sprouting from the ground but instead of ground it is sprouting for the concrete. To me this adds to the popular nickname thatNew York Cityhas "
Concrete Jungle". The shape is the flower is very simple, almost as if a child had painted it; this creates the illusion of innocence, which in this day
and age is rare. The smell of the surrounding area was a very humid like smell which is a complete contrast of what you would smell if you were

Compare And Contrast Cherokee Chief
For my stencil design, I chose to draw a highly contrasted cherokee chief with bold capitalized words saying 'WE WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN'
blatantly placed in the center. I made the drawing highly contrasted so that the stencil design could be recognizable through only the shadows of the
chief. I made the words capitalized to draw attention, and white so that it contrasts the image. The reason why I chose to draw the chief was due to the
Native Americans being a "forgotten people". They are ignored and there is no attention being focused on theracism and erasure of the Native people.

Street Art : Street Artist
I believe there are two ways of looking at a situation; you can focus on the bad or choose to see the good. Street art is a topic that falls under one of
those situations. Many people associate street art with gangs, vandalism, violence, and other controversial topics. Being realistic, it is understandable
why society may have this opinion of street art, but it also serves many other significant purposes. Street art can be used as a medium to voice political
and social opinions of a community, and also spread awareness. Banksy, an anonymous street artist, is one of the most controversial street artist in the
world due to his intriguing and eloquent street art. He is known for crossing boundaries between art, philosophy, politics, sociology, humor and
narcissism. His impactful art has appeared in America,Australia, Canada, England, France, Israel, Jamaica and Palestine. Many of Banksy's pieces, such
as Reverse Pat Down, Comment Heart Request, Irony, and Graffiti is a Crime have expressed and drawn attention to political and social issues In
Banksy's Reverse Pat Down Piece he expresses the public opinion on police brutality. Police brutality is very large global issue today that is being
addressed daily now, and affecting our community. There has been back to back stories about police terrorizing towns and cities, and taking many
innocent lives. Pat downs and vehicle searches have become regular. However, Banksy created a piece of a girl apparently giving a soldier a pat

History Of The United States And The Uk
With many reports and studies conducted on the history of graffiti in the United States and the UK, one must not overlook the history of street art in
France. With France being a dignified instigator of political changes in modern history, France always honored the revolutionary spirit, which fit
perfectly with the art that emerged out of resistance. In today's time, France, and Paris especially, both enforce strict laws against vandalism and the
damage of public property and monuments. A law enforced starting in 1994, determines up to 10 years in jail, with fines up to 150,000 euros for
vandalism of public landmarks. A big part of the street art appeal lies in the anonymous case of the artistic messenger, which by the style of the... Show

Infused with both politics and poetics, Ernest Pignon–Ernest used wheat pastes to tell an alternative modern history of emotions and spirits of those in
need of remembrance. In the early 70s, he threw up silkscreen portraits of Arthur Rimbaud around the poet's favorite locals in Paris. Today, he is still as
active as he was before, continuously drawing attention to the margin with amazing installations. From its beginnings, graffiti in France assimilated

Is Graffiti Art Or Vandalism? Essay

Is Graffiti Art or Vandalism? Graffiti has put a major impact on the way people look at their everyday life. It was not used so much here in the
United States but was used overseas. Overseas, graffiti, or street art, was used or played as a sport, just like baseball is Americas sport. There are
different laws that are put over there than what there are here. They can get away with some of the things that they paint or make over there. If we
tried some of that type of work over here, we would get in trouble and possibly serve time for vandalizing someone else's property. There are many
biased outlooks on graffiti, but it should be considered art in all places because of all the time, effort, and design the artist put into their work.
"According to Kim Dovey, Simon Wollan, and Ian Woodblock, graffiti is a type of art as well. She claims that there is different type of graffiti. They
first talks about the different types of graffiti. Some of the types listed are stencil tags, throw up, and slogans. There are free handed drawings that are
called stencil drawings. Stencil graffiti combines elements from spray–paint graffiti and from street art. Stencil artists carefully prepare stencil
blueprints on hand–made sheets, which they then place on a surface and cover with spray paint. Stencil graffiti works are the easiest and quickest
pieces to replicate" (Lerman 299). "Throw up are just free handed paintings. Slogans are when they

Example Of Culture Jamming
This essay will unpack the ways in which hegemonic discourses are subverted to present counterhegemonic discourses focusing on the Tokolos stencil
on page two. It shall equally consider the potential and limitations of such a practice in a South African context. Finally, this essay will argue that
culture jamming brings about liberal pluralism and leads to a critical pedagogy by encouraging people to do reverse engineering and question the
dominant ideologies set in place.
Culture jamming is a form of media activism where hegemonic discourses are disputed though the subversion of media texts to create a new
counterhegemonic meaning. According to Klein, it is the "practice of parodying advertisements and hijacking billboards in order to drastically alter
their messages" (2001: 280). Another definition is, "A form of media activism that subverts and reworks the intended meaning of existing media texts
or parodies major corporations, public figures, and their media images" (Stadler & O'Shaughnessy, 2005: 188).
"'Hegemony' in this case means the success of the dominant classes in presenting their definition of reality, their view of the world, in such a way that
it is accepted by other classes as 'common sense'. The general 'consensus' is that it is the only sensible way of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It reworks the original meaning of existing texts. It brings into play the public's knowledge of brand and subverts it to pass across a particular
message. For culture jamming to be successful, the original message and the art work or typography must be recognisable. Culture jamming often
uses the very platform used by the advertiser to create a new message via mimesis. It can be described as some sort of semiotic imitation game. The
hegemonic signifier is hijacked and the signified changes. The visual codes are subtly subverted so that the final product isn't very different from the
original but the meaning is completely

Creating An Edible Gingerbread House
For many years, gingerbread houses have been made by families during Christmas season, as part of Christmas festivities. Families gather around the
table go bake and decorate gingerbread houses and eat gingerbread cookies (Avey 2013). Some even participate in very competitive gingerbread
house–making competitions. While these houses are very elaborate and take hours and hours of very hard work, basic gingerbread houses are very
easy to make and decorate (Bauer).
When creating an edible gingerbread house, the first step that needs to be completed is to gather all of the materials needed to build and decorate the
house. The materials needed are: half a cup (1 stick) of room temperature butter, half a cup of dark brown sugar, one fourth of a cup of light molasses or
dark corn syrup, one tablespoon of cinnamon, one tablespoon of ground ginger, one and a half teaspoons of ground cloves, one teaspoon of baking soda,
two cups of white all–purpose flour, two tablespoons of water, white chocolate, one pound of powdered sugar, two large white eggs, one teaspoon of
vanilla, assorted candies, rimless cookie sheet, pastry bag (for icing), straight edged knife, thick paper, pencil, ruler, and scissors. Candies are going to
be used to decorate the house and should be chosen wisely (Food Network).
Now the gingerbread for the gingerbread house can be started on. First, the butter should be creamed in a large mixing bowl. After the butter is
creamed, the brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon,

Journey My Identity
A prominent theme in both my artworks for Journey and Self–other has been the concept of my identity. Journey has highlighted the way in which I
view myself whereas self–other has dealt with the concept of my body changing but the person I am remaining the same. Another theme that has
incidentally played a role in both of my projects is the idea of reflection. In Journey I identified myself with an elephant, grappling with the concept of
misconception and identification. In self–other I explored the theme in two ways, self–other as love and the changes in one self, using reflection as a
way of understanding these concepts.
I have chosen to deal with my identity because discovering who you are when you are a teenager is I time filled with confusion, change, hormones and
many other pleasant and unpleasant experiences. Being an overweight child growing up I was bullied and as a result I thought losing weight was the
solution.
This is relevant because in Journey I had chosen to have two images, see image A, that of a girl and an elephant. I chose to reflect an image of
myself against an image of an elephant because I identified myself as an elephant. The reason why I identified myself this way was because when a

Street Art: The Accessibility Of Street Art
One interesting thing about street art is that even with the negative connotations of illegal tagging and painting on public property, there's still a huge
market for public art. However, some artists do not want to be paid because they think street art is supposed to be a more free way to create art, and
being paid for it would be "selling out". While graffiti just used to be created in order to be known, both modern graffiti and street art has become a way
for artists to break out of the conventional art world. The accessibility of street art often prompts artist to use it as a way to influence the viewer, and
send a message. It differs from artist to artist what topic they want to convey, but the majority of artists do seem to use their... Show more content on

Banksy has essentially the exact same style and le Rat, almost to the point of ripping off le Rat's style entirely. It's very sad, because Banksy makes
more money and is more well known than le Rat, and le Rat's pieces are often mistaken for Banksy's. Le Rat is of two minds on this topic. On the
one hand, he only thinks that anything he says about Banksy will be taken out of context and he will be the one under fire (Battersby). However,
he does think that Banksy helps to call attention to street art, saying "'It is important that people recognize what we do, and accept it for what it
is," he states. "It is art. Urban artists are forced to write on public property because there is a lack of space assigned to us'" (Philby), which goes
back to the idea of gallery space being both too restrictive and too selective for street artists. One of the more recent pieces Blek le Rat created was
on the topic of homelessness. He made his signature black and white stencils of homeless people sitting and lying on the ground. The idea was to
call attention to the homeless people living in cities that people see every day and disregard. It's an ironic subject, as the popularity of street art
makes le Rat's art a hot topic, but homeless people are not a popular subject at all. "...people will walk directly over actual homeless people, but will
stop to discuss a painting of a homeless person on a wall" (Stencil

Designing A Custom Paint At A New Gun Shop
I have wanted to perform a custom paint job on one of my rifles for a long time. I first learned of people painting guns while at a new gun shop.
The owner of the shop had a binder full of pictures of guns that he had painted. Upon seeing this I wanted to learn how to create amazing styles of
camouflage and other designs for my rifles as well. I went onto the internet and watched videos on how to properly paint a firearm. I learned that to
create the best effects was to paint the gun using a gravity feed air brush. When I tried to procure an air brush to complete this project a problem
occurred in the shipping. Somewhere along the route my air brush kit was misplaced and was unable to be found. This meant that I had to perform the

PlastiDip is a very thin spray able rubber that can act like a paint but can be removed at any time without struggle. I chose to do it this way in case
the spray paint didn't work as planned, then I could remove the paint without a problem and no permanent consequences. The PlastiDip has a short
drying time, making it easy to spray on multiple layers in a short period of time. After the second layer of the PlastiDip was fully sprayed on I let it
cure over night to ensure that the PlastiDip had fully gripped to the rifles stock. I kept the gun at room temperature and let it sit for about twelve
hours. I didn't wait this long for fear of the paint not bonding correctly, this amount of time was due to work and school. When I arrived home from
these priorities I began to make the stencils to create the designs on the rifle. I decided that I wanted to do a striped cut pattern on the gun using a red

on paper, and then transfer the design onto the masking tape. From there I was planning on cutting out the designs. This would let me create the proper
pattern and the tape would seal against the gun to prevent leaking. The stencils did not work like I was hoping they would. To cut out the pattern I first
started using a pocket knife. This just ripped the tape and ruined the pattern. I thought that this was due to

Types of Graffiti
Whether it's in a positive or negative way, it is clear that graffiti has a large impact on today's society. However, the majority of people have little to no
knowledge about this emerging art form that surrounds them. Graffiti comes in a multitude of different styles and formats, from the quotes and
numbers that constantly pop up inside bathroom stalls and on school desks to works of art that encompass entire buildings. This essay provides a
concise overview of the prominent categories of graffiti: tags, stencil, wildstyle, blockbusters, heaven, and pieces.
Tags
Primarily first name based, tags are the most common type of graffiti. These are what you would typically see scribbled on train cars and bridges
on your daily commute. Tags are typically done in a single color, and are quick enough to create that they can be made in a matter of seconds.
They consist mainly of names or nicknames, or a short phrase. A good example of a tag was the American pop culture fad, known as "Kilroy was
here", a simple drawing of a bald man with a prominent nose peering over a wall accompanied by the phrase Kilroy was here, which quickly became
an amusing icon because of it's ability to pop up anywhere. 2. Stencil Stencils are complicated works of graffiti more similar to paintings, made simple
with the use of a thick sheet of cardboard cut into a stencil. They achieve the appearance of paintings with only

Paul Moose Research Paper
Paul "Moose" Curtis has found himself immersed within the unusual and incredible art of reverse graffiti. Instead of using aerosol paint to create
murals on walls, Moose uses a pressure washer to remove the dirt and grime from the wall eventuating a creation of ravishing images of pattern. This
new art form is evolving into a mad craze all over the world. This is the story of Moose. "I have never found that real easy way of explaining what I
do, I tell people that I make pictures by cleaning." He describes a weird thing he obtains about dirt. "I just look around for it all the time, I am a
professor of dirt. I create a contrast so where it is dirty and where it is clean, you can see these things like their black and white". His name

Black Lininging Experiment Essay
Experiment 1 Aim: To test what colour paint turns out best on my black lining. This will be the one that you can see the best. Method: 1. Place a
stencil over your material 2. Paint over the stencil 3. Leave material to dry 4. Wash stencil and repeat with other colours. Results: As I suspected, you
couldn't see experiment C at all. Experiment A did turn out, but it turned a more dirty red/brown colour than a bright red. Finally, I believe
experiment B turned out the best as the blue clearly showed. Conclusion: I will be using experiment B, as it came out the brightest and I don't mind
how the picture looked patchy. Modifications: As the original stencil I used to experiment was ruined, I will be changing the stencil I use for my final
piece. Experiment 2 Aim:... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

boning for experiment B seams stronger than the boning for experiment C. Conclusion: I will be using experiment B as it worked well when
tested and it seems stronger than the other two experiments. Experiment 4 Aim: To Test which colour thread I like for my lazy daisies. Method: 1.
Sew a lazy daisy stitch with a certain coloured embroidery thread. 2. Repeat with other colours. Results: I did not like how colour C turned out
against the red material. As I will be using colour B (black) for my machine embroidery I will not use it for my hand embroidery as I believe it
would turn out better if I had a contrast between two colours on my corset. Conclusion: I will be using colour A, as I would like to have the contrast
of the white and the black, (which I will be using for my machine embroidery) Modifications: For these experiments I used 6 threads for the lazy daisy

What Is Banksy Stenciling
Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist who uses his stenciling technique in his art to express many themes and messages about the corrupted world.
His identity is completely hidden to the public; Banksy is not even his real name! His identity is kept hidden because claiming his self is like
confessing to the illegal act of graffiti painting. He grew up in Bristol, a city in southwest England, and attended the Bristol Cathedral school. As a
young teen, Banksy was in search for a way to fulfil his potential creativness. Therefore, when he was young, he joined the expanding of graffiti
scenes in Bristol around the 1980s. These scenes focused on the young youth who were experiencing their defiant years and were bursting with
creative ideas that they want to include in their art. Being in these scenes helped Banksy find who he is and what he can do with his art. He created
the street name Banksy when he was involved in the scenes; therefore, no one can know who he is when he signs his art after he finishes painting them.
Instead of being like a normal graffiti artist who uses spray paint, Banksy corporate stenciling in each of his graffiti. He prefers it rather than regular
spray paint because of the efficiency and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Vandalism Vs Graffiti Research Paper
Graffiti: Art or Vandalism? The word graffiti is derived from the word graffito which means writing or drawing that has been scribbled, scratched or
painted on a wall or surface that is located within public view. Graffiti has existed since ancient times and could be found in a variety of locations.
Graffiti began to pick up steam as an art form in the 1970s and 1980s as can be seen in the film "Style Wars" and has continued to be an art form ever
since. For more information, please click the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EW22LzSaJA. There have been several famous and

Argumentative Essay On Graffiti
Censorship in terms of graffiti is the removal of unsanctioned writings or drawings on a wall or surface of a public place. Laws against graffiti pose a
threat to the natural way street artists create, forcing them to find different channels to express their thoughts and words. Banksy, a British street artist
who pushes the boundaries in the graffiti world, is known for his anti–authoritarian stencil work. As a graffiti artist, he already faces censorship given
that his choice medium is considered a criminal act in Britain. Being caught for graffiti can lead up to ten years of imprisonment, a fine, or community
service for young offenders. The combination of the illegal nature of graffiti and Banksy's choice in controversial subject matters, such as racism, the
"authority of political art institutions" and corporate institutions, have led to censorship of his street art by the people and the government (Mancoff
"Banksy"). Although censorship is limiting because graffiti is seen as detrimental to society, it is an integral part of Banksy's creative process.
Censorship influenced him to create for and appeal to a larger audience through stencil work instead of traditional graffiti tagging and by making a
website.
Unsurprisingly, there are arguments against the medium of graffiti. Since it is an unsanctioned practice, there are anxieties surrounding the fact that
there is a single decision maker compared to art institutions and commissioned public art. Both include "numerous

Analysis Of Alex Boyd's In Defense Of Graffiti

The Public Opinion and The Hidden Expressionist By definition, graffiti is illegal. It is also considered vandalism because public or private property
is intentionally destroyed, but in Alex Boyd's blog "In Defense of Graffiti", he clearly conveys his argument about how graffiti shows qualities of
value and shouldn't be criticized on impulse. Even though many people have seen graffiti as something to be condoned, punishable, and terrorizing,
it is actually just another form of expression, communication, art, and point of view. The younger generation doesn't feel that they are being heard.
There are so many things that young people go through and so much that they would like to speak about, but the older generation or the outside
world brushes it aside. They don't see their thoughts as something important or something worth their while. Graffiti seems like it is the go to tactic
to express their selves because it is a free and rebellious way to get the attention of everyone. Boyd states that "anywhere attempts are made to
smother freedom of speech, graffiti becomes an affordable, accessible method of communication (Boyd). The younger generation screams for the
attention of the outside world just to listen to them for a moment, so when they go to extremes like graffiti, it is just their way of making sure they
are being heard. Every color, stroke and spray is for a reason. For example, the

The Works Of Banksy By Henry David Thoreau
As Henry David Thoreau states: "the world is but a canvas to our imagination" is pragmatic in the sense of what is defined as art. The mere act of
shaping art onto the simplicity of paper is condoned while walls, streets, and bridges become the norm. A rugged description, yet so valid in this case.
This principle is exemplified in the works of Banksy. Banksy is my chosen artist. His works are authentic, yet aesthetically defined in the most unusual
places. His method of art is likewise fascinating – for he uses bold sardonic street art and dissident witticisms combined with graffiti performed in
idiosyncratic stenciling techniques to portray various messages. As findthemag.com states, Banksy uses "broad, complex abstractions and reducing
them into something palatable." I agree with this statement. Also, the term Banksy is a pseudonym for his unique identity that remains quite
unconfirmed. This is enthralling – an artist who refrains from claiming his own art? This idea might sound confounding to some, but it adds fervor to
my fondness of his art.
Nonetheless, Robin Banx (original moniker, a shortened form of robbing banks) or Banksy are a few of the flamboyant monikers for a revolutionary
street artist who is most known for his controversial stenciled pieces in public property. His stencils incorporated descriptively starching messages that
are both humorous as well as meaningful. His messages ranged from antiviolence to an economic standpoint – an audacious representation

Banksy Conceptual Framework Essay
BANKSY
ARTIST
Banksy is a pseudonymous England–based graffiti artist, political activist, film director, and painter.
His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humor with graffiti done in a distinctive stenciling technique. Such artistic works of
political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.
Known for his contempt for the government in labeling graffiti as vandalism, Banksy displays his art on public surfaces such as walls, even going as
far as to build physical prop pieces. Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti directly himself; however, art auctioneers have been known to attempt
to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He can actually draw."
ARTWORK
Asked about his technique, Banksy said:
I use whatever it takes. Sometimes that just means drawing a moustache on a girl's face on some billboard, sometimes that means sweating for days
over an intricate drawing. Efficiency is the key.
Stencils are traditionally hand drawn or printed onto sheets of acetate or card, before being cut out by hand. Because of the secretive nature of
Banksy's work and identity, it is uncertain what techniques he uses to generate the images in his stencils, though it is assumed he uses computers for
some images due to the photocopy nature of much of his work.
He mentions in his book, Wall and Piece, that as he was starting to do graffiti, he was always too slow and was either caught or could never finish the
art in one sitting. So he devised a series of intricate stencils to minimise time and overlapping of the colour.
There is dispute in the street art world over the legitimacy of stencils, with many artists criticizing their use as "cheating."
AUDIENCE
Peter Gibson, a spokesman for Keep Britain Tidy, asserts that Banksy's work is simple vandalism, and Diane Shakespeare, an official for the same
organization, was quoted as saying: "We are concerned that Banksy's street art glorifies what is essentially vandalism." In his column for The
Guardian, satirist Charlie Brooker wrote of Banksy "...his work looks dazzlingly clever to idiots."

vibrations in the needles. This vibration was much easier to control through regulating of the current going into the system, and the other major perk
of his design was the fact that instead of releasing a single frame for tattoo artists to use he instead released multiple variants allowing for a tattoo
artist to choose what type of style they wanted their tattoo gun to be. This also meant it was possible to get a more specialized and comfortable tattoo
gun to use. The benefit being that the artist could pick the exact design they wanted and not have to worry about the hassle of having a special ordered

Graffiti Vandalistic Art
Walking down the streets of New York City, on the left the entire wall is covered in art, with a wide spectrum of graffiti, ranging from the word New
York to drawings of the Statue of Liberty and many more pieces such as gang–related phrases and drawings, the feeling of amazement is present.
Graffiti, being a freelance way of expressing good and bad emotions through art, is often frowned upon due to vandalistic nature of most graffiti.
Graffiti has been around since the late 1900's and it is said that "The first modern graffiti writer is widely considered to be Cornbread... who in
Philadelphia, started tagging city walls to get the attention of a girl" (De Melker). Graffiti has become more commonly found in big towns and
cities. In today's, time graffiti is beginning to be more than just gangs marking territory and evolving into its own art form. From subway cars to the
sides of walls and sometimes in art galleries, graffiti can be found anywhere. Graffiti can be beautiful yet is very controversial form of art and is used
for many different reasons.
According to Eldridge, "graffiti is an ancient form of human communication and can be found in ruins dated to early civilizations." Graffiti has
transformed from people just tagging things to a way of art. "Graffiti writing eventually became bigger and more stylized, developing from tags to
pieces, short masterpieces. Piecing demands decorative expression, artistic skill, and understanding of aerosol paint control" (Eldridge). Over the
years, the way graffiti has been viewed has also changed. Although most still see it as vandalism, those who actually like draw and are interested in art
see graffiti as its own form of art developing just like other forms of art, like music. Although graffiti is viewed as vandalism to most there are some
cases where graffiti is used as a way of self–expression. In the T.V. series Switched at Birth, Bay
Kennish puts her art on walls, billboards, and on her car as a way of wanting her art to be known to others. She uses graffiti and drawing as a form of
self–expression. Other artist around the world use graffiti to express themselves. For example, a street artist

The English Street Artist Banksy
The English street artist Banksy has produced various works of art in a revolutionary style. Street art is a very unique form of art that is produced in
public areas on buildings, bridges, concrete, poles, and many other locations. This form of art is usually done illegally, which adds to the immense
controversy that already surrounds it. With that being said, it speaks volumes about artists such as Banksy, who risk criminal charges of vandalism in
order to empower others through his art. One of his popular pieces, "Looters", historically commemorated the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in
New Orleans, boldly criticizing government, media, racism and other significant issues. Many citizens were left with questions and the image
poetically raised awareness to aspects of post–Katrina recovery that are still being discussed till this day. For the short time it existed as an
untampered image on Elysian Fields Avenue, it managed to create a lasting impression that will exist decades after its removal. In the early 1990s,
Banksy began his distinguished career. He is mostly known for his contentious and politically themed, stenciled pieces. His identity currently remains
secret, after two decades, and this adds a vibe of mystery into the art that he produces. His work has been rumored to appear in America, Israel,
Palestine, Jamaica, and many other countries. Banksy is unquestionably the most controversial street artist to emerge on the global stage. One place in

Rhetorical Analysis On Banksy
Throughout the course of time, Banksy's street art is known for bringing a specific point across through his affective use of certain visual art that
are very eye opening. For example, his signature use of black and white paints for the image itself and a very bold color such as red for magnifying
the text. His art also brings up very controversial topics that most of his audience fail to realize or recognize. In one of his many famous pieces of art,
he effectively uses the four rhetorical considerations and the two Aristotic considerations to convey to his audience that there are still many societies
that have no interest in girls getting an education. When looking from a far, a person appears to see just an outline of a little girl on the ground holding
something but "what?" In Banksy art, he uses a lot life size figures to make his audience question "Who's over there". From this stimulating question,
the person ultimately walks over to satisfy their curiosity, which is a strong trait he has. As the person moves in closer to the painting, he/she sees is
not even real so now they ask "Why is little girl on ground? What is she holding? What do the bold capitalized letters in red say?" As they approach
closer, they develop more questions, which enhance their curiosity and determination to finding answers. His painting does a great job of actually

(I) Man Ray – Gun with Alphabet Stencils (1924) The below artwork was done by Man Ray, a pioneer in the 20th century and a leading figure in
both Dada and Surrealist art movements (Phillipscollection.org, 2017). Although Man Ray considered himself as a painter, starting from the late
1910s, he began his devotion to photography (The Art Institute of Chicago, 2017). Through his playful experimental approach to motion and visual
puns, these elements defined the characters of his work of art. Long before film photography and today's digital camera age, Man Ray used a range of
media to portray his artwork – he empowered viewers to discover the meanings behind each work.

Whether knowingly or unknowingly, these X–ray like circular shapes can be anything in the minds of the viewers, interpreting the meaning of this
image in a number of different ways. Marcel Duchamp stated that "It was his achievement to treat the camera as he treated the paintbrush, as a mere
instrument at the service of the mind" (Biography.com, 2017). In addition, the photogram might seem expressive and abstract, yet on the contrary, it is
the precise medium to document the everyday objects in an unrepeatable and somehow uncontrollable way. The artist cannot predict how the selected
objects will be recorded under the light sources that were tampered with. From the first glance, the image completely dissociated from its original
subject, allowing one's memory to fill the gap. Yet below its surface, the image is an accurate documentation that captured a moment of psychical
intensity. It revealed a new visual experience, using objects in the simplest way. One can say that the use of this medium disclosed reality more
preciously due to its invisibility and mysterious representation (The Museum of Modern Art, 2017).
(II) Andreas Gursky – Rhine II (1999) Looking at another example, the photograph below was created by Andreas Gursky, a German photographer

Martin Watson Stencil

  • 1. Martin Watson Stencil Many street artists now use stencils to display their pieces on a wall canvas. Stencil art requires more preparation as the design has to prepared and cut on a sturdy material (i.e. cardboard) so that it can quickly be sprayed over. This results in more intricate designs and show more contrast. Banksy is a famous– yet anonymous– is an example of a street artist who uses stencils to portray his urban art across the streets of London. His style of work is usually dominated with black and white and sometimes complimented with a splash of colour. This allows the viewer to understand the concept of his work much better as they realise the main focus of the piece. His art works usually involve a political message and is sometimes reinforced humorously. For instance, the image on the left raises awareness of the increasing interest and obsession and technology in younger generations. It suggests a scary future– if not already a reality– that the source of happiness will come from the 'no. of likes' we receive on our social media pages. Martin Watson is a young Norwegian artist who is inspired by artists like Jose Parla and Cy Twombly. "His artistic expression is a subtle mixture of graffiti and stencil which together comprised a decadent version of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Today, the use of the canvas as support of his artistic expression, far from restricting the offers him a new freedom. Self–taught artist, his work is based on the audacity and singularity without losing its urban artistic roots. It is played for the collection of pre–established codes and rules." His work– unlike most urban street artists– are pictures filled with colours so that the need for words as a form of expression is minimised. • 3. Banksy: Artist or Lawbreaker? Essay Banksy: Artist or Lawbreaker? Art is a persons' opinion. The definition of art is the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. There is no real definition for what is beautiful or appealing to the human eye. Banksy is said to be an artist by some and a graffiti lawbreaker by others. Basically, it is up to the person to define Banksy as someone who is doing the right thing verses doing the wrong thing. Banksy creates his graffiti pictures to make a stand for what he believes is the right way to look at controversial issues. Some people may not like Banksy's graffiti because they do not have the same views as him. Some people might ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This, to me, shows that he creates his art for the public to view not to make money off of his artwork. As Banksy's artwork spread throughout the world the prices of his paintings went up as well. A painting of a girl in an astronaut suite holding a yellow bird sold for $576,000. After this picture sold Banksy posted on his website a painting of an art auction with the words, "I can't believe you morons actually buy this shit." He calls the art world, "the biggest joke going ... a rest home for the over privileged, the pretentious, and the weak." Banksy takes pride in telling people his opinion of their actions. His website post against people buying his paintings for a lot of money is a sign of just how much he dislikes the use of money in the world. I think this proves that the goal in creating his graffiti art is not to make a lot of money but to let his opinion be heard on all kinds of controversial topics. His strong opinions may also be because of his anonymous identity. Banksy or as said to be shortened for Robert Banks is the graffiti artist who will never be caught. His technique of stenciling makes it easier for him to get the job done fast and efficiently. Banksy states that being anonymous can be "crippling" and hard to do. In an anonymous email said to be from Banksy he states, "I have been called a sellout, but I give away thousands of paintings for free, how many more do you want?" he wrote. "I think it was ... • 4. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Linocut Linocut–A block made of linoleum –Carving tools –Paper fabrics Linocut is a form of relief printing in which the artist cuts a design into the surface of the block. Then a mirror image is created when the artist places a paper or fabric over the surface and presses down with a hand or a roller. The raised parts of the piece transfer over on to the paper or fabric to create the overall desired print. Linocut has both benefits and drawbacks as a form of printmaking. The major benefit of this form of art is that it is softer than wood making it easier to carve and use. Another benefit is that color can be added to the prints. However, there are several drawbacks of using linocut such as linoleum "wears down more quickly under pressure, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The artist first coats the metal plate in an acid–resistant substance known as ground and is drawn on. The artist then uses a sharp tool or etching needle down to the plate. "Hard grounds are employed for finely detailed linear work. Soft ground can also be used, and virtually any tool can be used to expose the plate and resembles crayon and pencil drawings" (Sayre, 2012). Whichever ground is used by the artist is then placed in an acid bath. "The acid eats, or etches, into the plate where the lines have been drawn; the longer the exposed plate is left in the bath, and the stronger the solution, the greater the width and depth of the etched line" (Sayre, 2012). An artist can also create a way in stopping out a section by using varnishes or ground over the etched surface. Once the plate is finished being exposed to acid, it is inked and printed. Etching has both benefits and drawbacks. Some of the benefits to etching are that it is a fluid and free process and it is able to capture the sense of immediacy as a sketch. However, some drawbacks to etching include "it is a medium that requires calculations and planning, an ability to manipulate chemicals, and a willingness to risk losing everything in order to achieve the desired effect" (Sayre, ... • 5. New York City's Concrete Jungle The graffiti I picked is a plane white flower painted on a dark green board. The flower is short and almost invincible to a bystander who is on a rush, no bigger than a notebook. Place right on the the edge between the floor and the board, this gives it an effect of realism, as if it was an actual flower sprouting from the ground but instead of ground it is sprouting for the concrete. To me this adds to the popular nickname thatNew York Cityhas " Concrete Jungle". The shape is the flower is very simple, almost as if a child had painted it; this creates the illusion of innocence, which in this day and age is rare. • 6. Compare And Contrast Cherokee Chief For my stencil design, I chose to draw a highly contrasted cherokee chief with bold capitalized words saying 'WE WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN' blatantly placed in the center. I made the drawing highly contrasted so that the stencil design could be recognizable through only the shadows of the chief. I made the words capitalized to draw attention, and white so that it contrasts the image. The reason why I chose to draw the chief was due to the Native Americans being a "forgotten people". They are ignored and there is no attention being focused on theracism and erasure of the Native people. When the U.S was being formed, the colonial Americans had started a genocide, killing over 100 million native people1. We choose to ignore the facts and pretend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Street Art : Street Artist I believe there are two ways of looking at a situation; you can focus on the bad or choose to see the good. Street art is a topic that falls under one of those situations. Many people associate street art with gangs, vandalism, violence, and other controversial topics. Being realistic, it is understandable why society may have this opinion of street art, but it also serves many other significant purposes. Street art can be used as a medium to voice political and social opinions of a community, and also spread awareness. Banksy, an anonymous street artist, is one of the most controversial street artist in the world due to his intriguing and eloquent street art. He is known for crossing boundaries between art, philosophy, politics, sociology, humor and narcissism. His impactful art has appeared in America,Australia, Canada, England, France, Israel, Jamaica and Palestine. Many of Banksy's pieces, such as Reverse Pat Down, Comment Heart Request, Irony, and Graffiti is a Crime have expressed and drawn attention to political and social issues In Banksy's Reverse Pat Down Piece he expresses the public opinion on police brutality. Police brutality is very large global issue today that is being addressed daily now, and affecting our community. • 8. History Of The United States And The Uk With many reports and studies conducted on the history of graffiti in the United States and the UK, one must not overlook the history of street art in France. With France being a dignified instigator of political changes in modern history, France always honored the revolutionary spirit, which fit perfectly with the art that emerged out of resistance. In today's time, France, and Paris especially, both enforce strict laws against vandalism and the damage of public property and monuments. A law enforced starting in 1994, determines up to 10 years in jail, with fines up to 150,000 euros for vandalism of public landmarks. Today, he is still as active as he was before, continuously drawing attention to the margin with amazing installations. • 10. Is Graffiti Art Or Vandalism? Essay Storm Shepherd Professor Beerline Com 1110 Date Is Graffiti Art or Vandalism? Graffiti has put a major impact on the way people look at their everyday life. It was not used so much here in the United States but was used overseas. Overseas, graffiti, or street art, was used or played as a sport, just like baseball is Americas sport. There are different laws that are put over there than what there are here. They can get away with some of the things that they paint or make over there. If we tried some of that type of work over here, we would get in trouble and possibly serve time for vandalizing someone else's property. There are many biased outlooks on graffiti, but it should be considered art in all places because of all the time, effort, and design the artist put into their work. "According to Kim Dovey, Simon Wollan, and Ian Woodblock, graffiti is a type of art as well. She claims that there is different type of graffiti. They first talks about the different types of graffiti. Some of the types listed are stencil tags, throw up, and slogans. There are free handed drawings that are called stencil drawings. Stencil graffiti combines elements from spray–paint graffiti and from street art. Stencil artists carefully prepare stencil blueprints on hand–made sheets, which they then place on a surface and cover with spray paint. Stencil graffiti works are the easiest and quickest pieces to replicate" (Lerman 299). "Throw up are just free handed paintings. Slogans are when they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Example Of Culture Jamming This essay will unpack the ways in which hegemonic discourses are subverted to present counterhegemonic discourses focusing on the Tokolos stencil on page two. It shall equally consider the potential and limitations of such a practice in a South African context. Finally, this essay will argue that culture jamming brings about liberal pluralism and leads to a critical pedagogy by encouraging people to do reverse engineering and question the dominant ideologies set in place. Culture jamming is a form of media activism where hegemonic discourses are disputed though the subversion of media texts to create a new counterhegemonic meaning. According to Klein, it is the "practice of parodying advertisements and hijacking billboards in order to drastically alter their messages" (2001: 280). Another definition is, "A form of media activism that subverts and reworks the intended meaning of existing media texts or parodies major corporations, public figures, and their media images" (Stadler & O'Shaughnessy, 2005: 188). "'Hegemony' in this case means the success of the dominant classes in presenting their definition of reality, their view of the world, in such a way that it is accepted by other classes as 'common sense'. • 12. Creating An Edible Gingerbread House For many years, gingerbread houses have been made by families during Christmas season, as part of Christmas festivities. Families gather around the table go bake and decorate gingerbread houses and eat gingerbread cookies (Avey 2013). Some even participate in very competitive gingerbread house–making competitions. While these houses are very elaborate and take hours and hours of very hard work, basic gingerbread houses are very easy to make and decorate (Bauer). When creating an edible gingerbread house, the first step that needs to be completed is to gather all of the materials needed to build and decorate the house. The materials needed are: half a cup (1 stick) of room temperature butter, half a cup of dark brown sugar, one fourth of a cup of light molasses or dark corn syrup, one tablespoon of cinnamon, one tablespoon of ground ginger, one and a half teaspoons of ground cloves, one teaspoon of baking soda, two cups of white all–purpose flour, two tablespoons of water, white chocolate, one pound of powdered sugar, two large white eggs, one teaspoon of vanilla, assorted candies, rimless cookie sheet, pastry bag (for icing), straight edged knife, thick paper, pencil, ruler, and scissors. Candies are going to be used to decorate the house and should be chosen wisely (Food Network). Now the gingerbread for the gingerbread house can be started on. • 13. Journey My Identity A prominent theme in both my artworks for Journey and Self–other has been the concept of my identity. Journey has highlighted the way in which I view myself whereas self–other has dealt with the concept of my body changing but the person I am remaining the same. Another theme that has incidentally played a role in both of my projects is the idea of reflection. In Journey I identified myself with an elephant, grappling with the concept of misconception and identification. In self–other I explored the theme in two ways, self–other as love and the changes in one self, using reflection as a way of understanding these concepts. I have chosen to deal with my identity because discovering who you are when you are a teenager is I time filled with confusion, change, hormones and many other pleasant and unpleasant experiences. Being an overweight child growing up I was bullied and as a result I thought losing weight was the solution. This is relevant because in Journey I had chosen to have two images, see image A, that of a girl and an elephant. I chose to reflect an image of myself against an image of an elephant because I identified myself as an elephant. The reason why I identified myself this way was because when a person first looks at an elephant, the very first feature you take into account is the size of the elephant, ... • 15. Street Art: The Accessibility Of Street Art One interesting thing about street art is that even with the negative connotations of illegal tagging and painting on public property, there's still a huge market for public art. However, some artists do not want to be paid because they think street art is supposed to be a more free way to create art, and being paid for it would be "selling out". While graffiti just used to be created in order to be known, both modern graffiti and street art has become a way for artists to break out of the conventional art world. The accessibility of street art often prompts artist to use it as a way to influence the viewer, and send a message. It's very sad, because Banksy makes more money and is more well known than le Rat, and le Rat's pieces are often mistaken for Banksy's. Le Rat is of two minds on this topic. On the one hand, he only thinks that anything he says about Banksy will be taken out of context and he will be the one under fire (Battersby). However, he does think that Banksy helps to call attention to street art, saying "'It is important that people recognize what we do, and accept it for what it is," he states. "It is art. Urban artists are forced to write on public property because there is a lack of space assigned to us'" (Philby), which goes back to the idea of gallery space being both too restrictive and too selective for street artists. One of the more recent pieces Blek le Rat created was on the topic of homelessness. He made his signature black and white stencils of homeless people sitting and lying on the ground. The idea was to call attention to the homeless people living in cities that people see every day and disregard. It's an ironic subject, as the popularity of street art makes le Rat's art a hot topic, but homeless people are not a popular subject at all. The owner of the shop had a binder full of pictures of guns that he had painted. Upon seeing this I wanted to learn how to create amazing styles of camouflage and other designs for my rifles as well. I went onto the internet and watched videos on how to properly paint a firearm. I learned that to create the best effects was to paint the gun using a gravity feed air brush. I chose to do it this way in case the spray paint didn't work as planned, then I could remove the paint without a problem and no permanent consequences. The PlastiDip has a short drying time, making it easy to spray on multiple layers in a short period of time. After the second layer of the PlastiDip was fully sprayed on I let it cure over night to ensure that the PlastiDip had fully gripped to the rifles stock. I kept the gun at room temperature and let it sit for about twelve hours. I didn't wait this long for fear of the paint not bonding correctly, this amount of time was due to work and school. When I arrived home from these priorities I began to make the stencils to create the designs on the rifle. I decided that I wanted to do a striped cut pattern on the gun using a red spray paint. Creating the stencils was the hardest part of the project. I thought that the easiest way to make the stencils would be to draw out the design on paper, and then transfer the design onto the masking tape. From there I was planning on cutting out the designs. This would let me create the proper pattern and the tape would seal against the gun to prevent leaking. The stencils did not work like I was hoping they would. However, the majority of people have little to no knowledge about this emerging art form that surrounds them. Graffiti comes in a multitude of different styles and formats, from the quotes and numbers that constantly pop up inside bathroom stalls and on school desks to works of art that encompass entire buildings. This essay provides a concise overview of the prominent categories of graffiti: tags, stencil, wildstyle, blockbusters, heaven, and pieces. Tags Primarily first name based, tags are the most common type of graffiti. These are what you would typically see scribbled on train cars and bridges on your daily commute. Tags are typically done in a single color, and are quick enough to create that they can be made in a matter of seconds. They consist mainly of names or nicknames, or a short phrase. A good example of a tag was the American pop culture fad, known as "Kilroy was here", a simple drawing of a bald man with a prominent nose peering over a wall accompanied by the phrase Kilroy was here, which quickly became an amusing icon because of it's ability to pop up anywhere. 2. His identity is completely hidden to the public; Banksy is not even his real name! His identity is kept hidden because claiming his self is like confessing to the illegal act of graffiti painting. He grew up in Bristol, a city in southwest England, and attended the Bristol Cathedral school. As a young teen, Banksy was in search for a way to fulfil his potential creativness. Therefore, when he was young, he joined the expanding of graffiti scenes in Bristol around the 1980s. These scenes focused on the young youth who were experiencing their defiant years and were bursting with creative ideas that they want to include in their art. Being in these scenes helped Banksy find who he is and what he can do with his art. He created the street name Banksy when he was involved in the scenes; therefore, no one can know who he is when he signs his art after he finishes painting them. • 28. Argumentative Essay On Graffiti Censorship in terms of graffiti is the removal of unsanctioned writings or drawings on a wall or surface of a public place. Laws against graffiti pose a threat to the natural way street artists create, forcing them to find different channels to express their thoughts and words. Banksy, a British street artist who pushes the boundaries in the graffiti world, is known for his anti–authoritarian stencil work. As a graffiti artist, he already faces censorship given that his choice medium is considered a criminal act in Britain. Being caught for graffiti can lead up to ten years of imprisonment, a fine, or community service for young offenders. The combination of the illegal nature of graffiti and Banksy's choice in controversial subject matters, such as racism, the "authority of political art institutions" and corporate institutions, have led to censorship of his street art by the people and the government (Mancoff "Banksy"). Although censorship is limiting because graffiti is seen as detrimental to society, it is an integral part of Banksy's creative process. Censorship influenced him to create for and appeal to a larger audience through stencil work instead of traditional graffiti tagging and by making a website. Unsurprisingly, there are arguments against the medium of graffiti. Since it is an unsanctioned practice, there are anxieties surrounding the fact that there is a single decision maker compared to art institutions and commissioned public art. Analysis Of Alex Boyd's In Defense Of Graffiti Bosfield 1 Darlecia Bosfield Professor McFeaters ENC1101 10 October 2017 The Public Opinion and The Hidden Expressionist By definition, graffiti is illegal. It is also considered vandalism because public or private property is intentionally destroyed, but in Alex Boyd's blog "In Defense of Graffiti", he clearly conveys his argument about how graffiti shows qualities of value and shouldn't be criticized on impulse. Even though many people have seen graffiti as something to be condoned, punishable, and terrorizing, it is actually just another form of expression, communication, art, and point of view. The younger generation doesn't feel that they are being heard. There are so many things that young people go through and so much that they would like to speak about, but the older generation or the outside world brushes it aside. They don't see their thoughts as something important or something worth their while. Graffiti seems like it is the go to tactic to express their selves because it is a free and rebellious way to get the attention of everyone. Boyd states that "anywhere attempts are made to smother freedom of speech, graffiti becomes an affordable, accessible method of communication (Boyd). The younger generation screams for the attention of the outside world just to listen to them for a moment, so when they go to extremes like graffiti, it is just their way of making sure they are being heard. • 34. The Works Of Banksy By Henry David Thoreau As Henry David Thoreau states: "the world is but a canvas to our imagination" is pragmatic in the sense of what is defined as art. The mere act of shaping art onto the simplicity of paper is condoned while walls, streets, and bridges become the norm. A rugged description, yet so valid in this case. This principle is exemplified in the works of Banksy. Banksy is my chosen artist. His works are authentic, yet aesthetically defined in the most unusual places. His method of art is likewise fascinating – for he uses bold sardonic street art and dissident witticisms combined with graffiti performed in idiosyncratic stenciling techniques to portray various messages. As findthemag.com states, Banksy uses "broad, complex abstractions and reducing them into something palatable." I agree with this statement. Also, the term Banksy is a pseudonym for his unique identity that remains quite unconfirmed. This is enthralling – an artist who refrains from claiming his own art? This idea might sound confounding to some, but it adds fervor to my fondness of his art. Nonetheless, Robin Banx (original moniker, a shortened form of robbing banks) or Banksy are a few of the flamboyant monikers for a revolutionary street artist who is most known for his controversial stenciled pieces in public property. Sometimes that just means drawing a moustache on a girl's face on some billboard, sometimes that means sweating for days over an intricate drawing. Efficiency is the key. Stencils are traditionally hand drawn or printed onto sheets of acetate or card, before being cut out by hand. Because of the secretive nature of Banksy's work and identity, it is uncertain what techniques he uses to generate the images in his stencils, though it is assumed he uses computers for some images due to the photocopy nature of much of his work. He mentions in his book, Wall and Piece, that as he was starting to do graffiti, he was always too slow and was either caught or could never finish the art in one sitting. So he devised a series of intricate stencils to minimise time and overlapping of the colour. There is dispute in the street art world over the legitimacy of stencils, with many artists criticizing their use as "cheating." AUDIENCE Peter Gibson, a spokesman for Keep Britain Tidy, asserts that Banksy's work is simple vandalism, and Diane Shakespeare, an official for the same organization, was quoted as saying: "We are concerned that Banksy's street art glorifies what is essentially vandalism."
