What language do we speak?
Eesti keelt (=Estonian language)
• Estonian is the official language of
Estonia, spoken by about 1.1 million people
in Estonia and tens of thousands in
various emigre communities in Sweden,
USA, United Kingdom, Australia.
Is it difficult to learn it? Yes!
• Estonian is one of the most beautiful languages in the world but
it is also a really complicated language to learn.
• Estonian language has the vowel “ Õ ”. We have also letters
Ä, Ö, Ü.

JÄÄTIS = ICE CREAM
• Also, the Estonian language has 14 cases!
• And finally – the language has no genders, no future

About our history
• Before the 13th century there were Estonian leaders
• Estonia has been under the rule of Danes, Germans,
Swedes and Russians
• Independence was declared on 24th February 1918
• Soviet occupation 1940-1991 (German 1941-44)
• Independence was restored on 20 August 1991
• Joined NATO and the European Union in 2004–

• When somebody is glad he may say:
“I laughed myself into a pea” or even
“I laughed myself into two halves.”
He “holds his stomach with both hands” when he
hears a hilarious joke.
• When a person is angry
• his “lungs move on top of his liver”,
• his “heart fills up”,
• he “comes to the boil”, and in a rage
• “turns into a pretzel”.
• His “top then turns purple”,
• and he “goes out of himself”.

Internet (India 7%, Ukraine 42%,
Austria 74%,Sweden 92% of the

• Almost all of Estonian people have a
computer at home, many families have
several.
• Every Estonian school is connected to

e-school program
• There are a lot of FREE Wifi hotspots
• Income tax declaration can be filled in
the Internet, it takes a short time
• You can vote for elections through the
internet, buy tickets and goods
