2. Who we are
Eportfolio Ireland is a professional learning
network for eportfolio practitioners and
researchers based in Ireland. Established in
2017 as MaharaIrl, and rebranded Eportfolio
Ireland in 2018 to better represent the broader
interests of all members.
This grassroots community with a voluntary
steering group holds online and face-to-face
events to support faculty professional
development and ongoing collaboration
between eportfolio practitioners in Irish higher
education institutions.

5. INTRA Work
Placement
INTRA (INtegrated TRAining), DCU's
internship programme has been running for
over 30 years. It is an accredited and highly
valued part of student learning and is a
compulsory part of many degree
programmes.
The aim is to enrich students' education
through real-world experience, help them to
develop transferable skills and ultimately
enhance their employability.

9. Career
Eportfolios
▪ Individual, personal reflection on learning
and professional practice.
▪ Nurtures motivation for continuous
development through enhancing self-
reflection skills, self-assessment and
setting future professional goals.
▪ Eportfolio platforms are now allowing for
further collaboration, where professionals
can showcase CPD activities with peers,
employers and regulatory bodies.
▪ This allows for a collaborative approach to
planning, organising and enhancing an
individual’s work.

Irish Journal of

● While there is interest and an increasing community there is a
dearth of empirical research on eportfolio practice in the context of
the Irish educational system.
● Special Issue of IJTEL. The Irish Journal of Technology Enhanced
Learning is an open access, peer reviewed journal published by the
Irish Learning Technology Association.
● Therefore, eportfolio Ireland put out a call in May 2020 calling for
extended abstracts by 31sy July with a view to final submissions by
November 2020.
● An emphasis on support to ‘new’ authors and acknowledging the
issues faced by women during the pandemic #femedtech
(http://femedtech.net/published/open-letter-to-editors-editorial-boards/)
● Ran a Pomodoro ‘Style’ event in July to act as a support and
encouragement event
● 17 responses have been submitted to the journal in response to the
call

Recording achievement and documenting evidence of knowledge are essential skills for newly qualified professionals in a variety of settings. Early professionals in education, pharmacy and social care are required to continually demonstrate competencies that will enable them to practice effectively in dynamic professional environments. Professionals are increasingly required by regulatory bodies to document their continuous professional development (CPD) via an eportfolio (Gordon & Campbell, 2013; National Forum, 2018). Eportfolios are emerging as essential tools for managing CPD, gaining recognition and accreditation for learning. Using eportfolio as a tool for CPD allows the user to demonstrate reflective learning and competency acquisition to a desired audience such as an employer, mentor or regulating body.
Development of career portfolios across Irish education, medical and caring professions incorporates CPD, training and practice based research. Embedding the use of eportfolio tools in professional training ensures that evidence-based practice is supported and applied routinely; it provides an effective framework for analysing development and disseminating learning. Increasingly, graduates are submitting their eportfolio as part of the job application process and employers are becoming more familiar with reviewing eportfolio (Taylor, Rowley, 2017; Ring, Waugaman, Brackett, 2017). Von Kronsky & Oliver (2012) found that students were motivated to use an eportfolio as they thought it would improve their employability skills. In order for employers to fully utilise eportfolios of newly qualified professionals, there is a need for eportfolio tools to be properly resourced and supported in order to enhance deeper engagement for career development.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (CPD) Rules came into effect in January 2016 outlining the legal framework for the PSI’s CPD model for pharmacists’ practicing in Ireland.
The ePortfolio Review is the process by which pharmacists are required to submit an extract from their ePortfolio, which demonstrates that they are appropriately engaging in CPD. Pharmacists can expect to be called by the PSI to participate once in every five-year period to submit an extract from their ePortfolio managed by Irish Institute of Pharmacy (IIOP), for review.
Once notified, selected pharmacists are supported by the IIOP advising of the deadline and details relating to the online submission of individual ePortfolio extracts. Peer reviewers are nominated pharmacists practising in a variety of roles, including in community, in hospital and in non-patient facing roles. The PSI have developed measures against which submitted ePortfolio extracts are reviewed. These standards for eportfolio review incorporate the legislative requirements and what would reasonably and practically indicate appropriate CPD engagement. The PSI has now completed a random selection of over 1,400 pharmacists for the third ePortfolio Review, and notified the selected pharmacists by email to submit extracts in mid-2018. Pharmacists selected for review will be invited to submit their ePortfolio extract for review by the IIOP in January 2019.
ePortfolio Review is the process by which pharmacists are required to submit an extract of their CPD cycles from their ePortfolio (an ‘ePortfolio extract’), which demonstrates that they are appropriately engaging in CPD. Pharmacists can expect to be called to submit an extract from their ePortfolio once in every five year period. This is in line with the legislative requirements set out in the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Continuing Professional Development) Rules 2015 (S.I. No. 553/2015).
The second statutory ePortfolio Review was completed in May 2018. According to the IIOP, 96% of pharmacists participating in the Review demonstrated compliance with the Review Standards, and the IIOP reported that the feedback from participants was broadly very positive (September 2018). This provides a positive early indicator for the level of engagement with the Eportfolio review process and its effectiveness in capturing CPD practices among pharmacists.
