Designed to promote interest in garbage-free lunch program at school

1. One day, the Green Team
collected all the garbage from
each classroom after lunch.
We collected 16.5 pounds of food waste, some of
which could have been composted.
1 large bin full of wrappers from cheese strings, fruit
snacks, granola bars, cheese and cracker snacks,
and Ziplok snack bags
food items that were not finished . . .or not
even opened!
We also found a lot of things that could have
been recycled.

2. We found 53 containers that could
have been recycled if they were clean.

that if you wash your plastic .

containers they can be put in the big
blue recycling bin in your classroom?

4. One yogurt container in the garbage
may not seem like very much
but . . .

5. Here are 53 containers, the number
collected on one day at our school.

6. Here are 265 containers, the
number that would be collected
at school in one week.

7. In one month at the same rate we would
throw away 1060 containers!

9. So . . . if there are that many containers
thrown out in one month, how many would
there be in one school year? Let's count.
