AIM: Machining is any of various processes in which a piece of raw material is cut into a
desired final shape and size by a controlled material-removal process.
PROS vs. NON MATERIAL REMOVAL PROCESSES:
- Precise tolerances: IT-6/ IT-9
- Good surface roughnesses: Ra=0.5 / Ra=6.4
- Different geometries manufacturability: small diameter holes, small thickness walls,…
- Very flexible operations
- Any material can be manufactured (Polymers, metallic alloys,
composites, ceramics, wood,..
CONS vs. NON MATERIAL REMOVAL PROCESSES:
- Machining costs
- Removed material is undervalued (chip)

PROS vs. NON CONVENTIONAL PROCESSES:
- A higher chip volume is removed per unit of energy and time. Thus, lower costs.
CONS vs. NON CONVENTIONAL PROCESSES:
- Influenced by material physical features:
a- Hard materials difficult to be machined ( > 65 HRC): in EDM and electrochemical
machining this has no effect
b- Soft materials difficult to be machined: sponge, paperboard,…
