Evaluation 2
1. How effective is the combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
2. In what ways is the branding ‘coherent’ –
why does it all look like it’s for the same
band?
It was important that throughout the
production of my print work I created a
certain image or brand; this gives the
audience something to relate to. I have used
a couple of feature that are found throughout
the digipak and advertisement and make ‘All
About Flux’ a marketable product.
House Style
The colours that were chosen are
predominantly red, black, white and sepia.
We chose these colours as we wanted the old
fashioned circus or theatre theme to run
throughout the print product. Because red
and black are the dominant colours on my
print work, black and white were chosen as
to compliment the colour palette but also
because they show up best upon the
background.
3. Fonts
There were two main fonts that I used for my print work:
Orator std
I used these two fonts because it I wanted the print work to be kept simple and easy to
read. Because some of the writing was quite small it needed to be in a simple from in
order for the audience to be able to read it. Also I did not want to draw to much attention
away from the images and photos on the print products.
I created a Facebook group in order to gain feedback, I also created a table showing which
font my audience preferred:
FONT
1. Budmo Jiggler 3
2. Cinerama 4
3. RNS Baruta 3
Black
4. Stentiga 8
5. Steelfish 0
6 Teen 0
This shows that Stentiga was by far the most popular font, the second font I chose
because I thought it worked over all of these, it was simple whereas the other fonts
seemed to clash with each other.
4. Fonts Continued
Furthermore, all of the fonts on the digipak are the same apart from the
band name, this is also larger than the rest. This is important because it
is the band name you are trying to sell, therefore it has to be made to
stand out more than the other writing; this is another way my digipak
abides by convention.
5. Props and Costumes
We decided that we were going for a circus or mime theme therefore we needed to come
up with some lists of props and costumes that we needed. For the narrative this included
a bowler hat, wig, facepaint, ripped jacket and suit, spinning plates, bunting, another
suit, mac jacket, pearls, jeans ect. For the performance this included skinny jeans,
stripped tops, converse, braces, hat, guitar and microphone.
In our research we created lists and moodboards that we added to our blog in order to
help us remember all of the items that we needed for filming.
All of the costumes tell the audience about the character the
Clown’s ripped jacked shows that he is poor, the rich mans suit shows that he is upper class,
the girls clothing shows she is upper class and slightly high maintenance. The converse and
skinny genes of the performers relate to the audience because these items of clothing are
what their audience are likely to wear themselves.
6. Lighting
The lighting used whilst filming the performance and the narrative was natural
lighting. We used a sepia effect to suggest past tense whilst the natural lighting
represented the present tense. We used natural lighting when filming the
performance section because we wanted the performers to be as clear as
possible as the focus of the video is to advertise them. The darker lighting used
for the clown seemed appropriate because it reflected the dark time he was
going through and we wanted to make it as realistic as possible. Also without a
spotlight it makes him seem insignificant and a poor performer; this is the
angle we were going for because we wanted to make it seem as though he wasn’t
very good at his job. In our audience feedback it was suggested that we use a
sepia effect on the clown parts to give it an old fashioned feel and to separate
the present from the past more.
7. Visual Themes
The visual themes that run
throughout the project are the
circus, mime and theatre theme.
We used the sepia theme in our
music video and this has been
carried out through to my print
work. I asked my target audience
what they thought of the themes
via Facebook, the feedback I
received is all positive they all
though that the theme worked
really well and was continued
well throughout the products.
