Spanish Independence
Growing up my mom always told me right before I go to bed, "never forget the history of your country, it is where you come from, our
independence is key to life." Well the history of my country is quite complicated however understandable. The population of native groups such as
the Carib, Arawak, Tairona, Muisca, dwindled due to war and diseases introduced by Spanish individuals during the 1500s. The areas of these of
these groups were then divided into Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela from once being New Granada. In 1810 my country declared our independence,
however, our independence was not fully declared until Simon Bolivar brought troops to fight back in the Battle of BoyacГЎ during 1819. After the
war Bolivar, created New Gran Colombia Republic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But the language of English has a placement in the education system for curriculum; however, very few kids speak or even know it because the
language is rarely spoken. Although English is rarely spoken in my country, often a variety of people in the business industry in Colombia
understand English. However, a majority of most foreign businesses creating business there would be fluent in Spanish. For example most business
cards would be printed with one side of the card in English and on the other side in Spanish; majority of the time the business cards will be presented
with the Spanish side facing. On the other hand a very confusing aspect about Colombia is the religion. In this case please notice that the constitution
of Colombia states and guarantees freedom of religion; however for a long period of time Catholicism has been the religion for more than 90% of
Colombia. Before my country obtained our independence the Roman Catholic Church controlled the Colombian educational system, however our
government increased the control during the early 19th century. Today we have one of the best educational systems within Latin America; we currently
have over 8 million students enrolled in higher education averaging an estimated of eight years in total. Public spending on education in Colombia is

Summary: The Revolutionary Armed Forces Of Colombia
The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia– FARC) is the largest and oldest paramilitary group
operating in South America, specifically based in the Republic of Colombia. For more than half a century, the FARC has been terrorizing the
Colombian Government and populous by means of extortion, kidnapping, and assassination, in hopes of reaching its goals of controlling Colombia's
political system. The United States (U.S.) Government categorizes the FARC as a terrorist organization. It is imperative the US immediately

The most major environmental concerns in Colombia are soil erosion, deforestation, and air pollution. The constant heavy rainfall have significantly
contributed to the overall soil erosion. The soil has also been damaged by overuse of pesticides by farmers who cultivate crops. The most significant
causes for deforestation are the exaggerated commercial exploitation of the forest in the country. Vehicle emissions in the big cities are also the cause
of the pollution problem. Safe drinking water is available mostly for urban areas and not as much of the rural areas. The lack of safe drinking water in
rural communities increases the risk for viruses and infections on the

Case Study: Plan Colombia
When it comes to illegal drugs, they are a part of Colombia's problem with terrorism. "During the last half century, the country has been in the midst of
a dirty war" (White, 2014 p.254). That is in which terrorists and governmental forces fight a shadow war that is interconnected with drug production.
The revolutionary armed forces of Colombia (FARC), is actually the oldest and largest terrorist group that operated against the Colombian government.
Now the United Sates had long been involved in Colombian affairs, and it began with a new project called "plan Colombia."
Plan Colombia is a joint effort by the United States and Colombia to reduce violence and illegal drugs. This plan began in 1999, with the purpose to

America's War on Drugs
Chaos best describes the current state of the Republic of Colombia. Rebelling terrorist groups from within the country threaten to topple Colombia's
actual government. Again and again, Colombia has shown its inability to fight the rebelling terrorists and simultaneously protect its civilians from harm.
America has several reasons to intervene, with its military force if necessary, in Colombia. America must be protected against drugs and the countless
crimes and social problems that drugs inevitably produce. By stopping the flow of drugs, America will also stop the flow of funds to terrorist groups

The cartel's narcotic poisons are even now damaging and destroying the lives of a significant portion of American youth. According to the National
Drug Intelligence Center, in the year 2001, 19.5 percent of 8th Grade students, 37.2 percent of high school students in their sophomore year, and 41.4
percent of high school seniors used illegal drugs (Information). Illegal drugs, most of which come from Colombia, are poisoning the American youth.
Drugs cause more than just the immediate problem of addiction. According to the National Drug Intelligence Center, sexually transmitted diseases,
pregnancy, suicide, truancy, cheating, and unhealthy family relationships pose greater risk for teenagers who take drugs than with their contemporaries
who do not (Information).
The United States of America has every right to protect its citizens from drugs and the crime and social problems that follow them. Since September
11, 2001, the United States has fought a war against terrorist organizations worldwide. America spends 64 billion dollars annually on illicit
drugs–––and much of this money funds the same terrorist groups who threaten America (International 24). If America hopes to defeat her enemies, the
terrorists, then she must shut down illegal drug operations. Drugs fund terrorism. Drugs and terrorists seem to be symbiotic at times–one problem

FARC In Colombia
The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were formed in 1964 with the stated intention of overthrowing the government and installing a
Marxist regime. After modest beginnings, the group rose to prominence through the 1980s and 1990s as its association with the drugs trade improved
its financial standing. At its peak, it was the largest and best–equipped guerrilla force in Latin America. According to a timeline written by BBC (2016)
the major events throughout the armed conflict history in Colombia is as it follows: "In 1964, the FARC was formed by Manuel Marulanda after
fleeing a government assault on communist groups in the country. In 1966, The FARC were adopted by the Communist Party of Colombia as its

But talks collapsed a year later. Then, in 1996, the FARC took 60 Colombian soldiers hostage, which was the first mass abduction carried out by
the group. Three years later, President Pastrana and leader Manuel "Sureshot" Marulanda announced the start of a period of "negotiation and
dialogue" following a meeting between the two in July the previous year. Large areas of the country were demilitarized to facilitate the talks.
Nevertheless, in 2002, the FARC rebels hijacked a domestic flight carrying 24 passengers, prompting President Andres Pastrana to end peace talks
which began in 1999. In 2002, Senator Ingrid Betancourt was kidnapped and held for six years before being rescued by the Colombian military
along with 14 other hostages. This is considered one of the most horrifying crimes committed by the FARC. Later in 2008, the group confirmed the
death of FARC founder Manuel Marulanda from heart attack. In 15 November 2011, the group announced that Timoleon Jimenez, alias Timochenko,
was the new leader of the group. Later in August 2012, President Juan Manuel Santos said talks have begun over a new peace process. Finally, the 26

Conflict in Colombia
Conflict in Colombia
Colombia is a Latin American country located in South America that has been ravaged by violence, starvation, and large–scale inequality between
higher and lower classes. The chaos in Colombia has been between rebel forces and the government and has lasted for over fifty years. These rebel
forces have fought to achieve their Liberalist lead goals of overthrowing the current democratic government of Colombia and replacing it with a
communist government. La Violencia was the main contributor to the conflict between the resistance fighters of Colombia and the Colombian
government that has brought on violence and terror from the violent actions between the Liberal and Conservative parties in the 1950's. , which has
directly brought on the violence and terror from the guerrilla groups.
In the mid 20th century, Colombian politics were dominated by the Liberal and Conservative parties with fierce supporters that carried out the
ideological and social differences into violence. Jorge Eliecer Gaitan, a popular leader of the liberal party in Colombia launched social, economic, and
political modernising reforms in the 1930's. Gaitan was in the process of converting Colombia into a left–wing country when he was assassinated right
before an upcoming presidential election. Gaitan was the favorite to represent the Liberal Party and was going to implement a more Liberal system in
Colombia. The reaction to this assassination produced an uncontrollable clash between

Evolution Of The FARC
The Colombian society has been greatly impacted by the FARC since it has been the spark for various conflicts, deaths, and tragedies due to
guerrillas and drug trafficking formed by disagreement towards the government of Colombia. "Not only did FARC use its influence to control the
drug trade and tax local communities to fund its activities, but it also enforced its own laws, mediated disputes, provided some limited social services
and was involved in the building of roads and other infrastructure in regions it held for decades." (Crisp, 2017)

After his mighty fall new organizations like the FARC rose up the occasion both politically and drug–wise. The Evolution of the FARC written by
Alfredo Molano, showcases the changed and the events that led to the political rise of this gigantic corporation throughout many years of its existence
persisting. "Fierce battles, often characterized by extreme cruelty, marked the early twentieth century in Colombia, as land–hungry peasants and their
reformist allies faced off against the country's land owning oligarchy, which was backed by the conservative hierarchy of the Catholic Church. The land
owners and Church leaders, along with peasants under their control, were organized as the Conservative Party; other, reform–minded peasants and their
allies were known as Liberals. On the rich and violent soil of those conflicts lie the origins of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the
country's most powerful present–day guerrilla group. From 1930 to 1946, a series of Liberal Party–run administrations, referred to in Colombian
history as the Liberal Republic, inaugurated land reform that restricted ancestral privileges and unleashed furious political opposition from the
Conservatives. After the internally divided Liberals fell in 1946, a new Conservative government used political violence to regain the oligarchy lands
and remain in power. Then Jorge Eliecer Gaitan, a charismatic Liberal and land–reform movement leader, was gunned down in Bogota in 1948. In
response, popular insurrections broke out in the capital and in virtually every city where the Liberals were strong. The assassination unleashed a
decade–long heightening of the old conflict. The new strife was known simply as La Violencia. Between 1948 and 1958, La Violencia took the lives
of more than 300,000 Colombians" (Molano, 2000). During many years the Colombian

The drug trade boom that took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s provided great financial assistance needed in–order to maintain its combative
needs for supplies such as weapons and technology to better equip their troops. The FARCs control of the rich coca–growing regions served as one of
the largest resources of income. Between the actual production of coca–paste and the taxation they implemented upon other growers in their controlled
territory, the FARC produced an average of $60–$100 million in annual revenue through the illegal substance. Simply eradicating the coca crops will
not be enough to stop the cocaine trade, and taking away farmers' ability to earn a living in this way serves only to increase support for armed groups
that protect the coca farmers. In addition with the drug trade, the FARC have adopted the tactic of kidnapping to their resume. Though the FARC has

Chapter Summary: Drugs And Militias
2/may/17 Drugs and Militias Mitchell brings to attention the two actors the principle and the agent. In the relationship between principals and
agents the principal can never be certain of complete control if behavior from other bureaucracies provide a guide to the private interest of agents
and their ability to hide their interests and actions from the principal contribute substantially and systematically to the human toll of the
bureaucracies of repression. For some of the agents the violence may simply be a task to perform in order to achieve the leader's goals, for others
violence may be a raw end not a means. Agents can seize opportunities provided by their offices and uniforms to supply personal gratification from
violence. Leaders justify policies and provide excuses for their actions to motivate their agents and perpetrators. There are two well–known problems
for the principal, the problem with goal variance, where the agents have goal independent of those of the principal, and the problem of information
asymmetry where agents have an information advantage over the principle. Mitchell also states that some principles choose not to exert authority...

The Ongoing Colombian Conflict
COLOMBIAN CONFLICT
Introduction:
The Colombian Conflict is a long drawn out, ongoing low–intensity intrastate war between the Colombian goverment, paramilitary troops, crime
syndicates and left–wing guerrillas such as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN), with the
Colombian goverment and the paramilitary troops combatting against the guerrillas. Its origins can be traced back to 1964. Since its inception, tens of
thousands of people have been killed, injured or kidnapped and hundreds of thousands have been displaced due to the conflict. There has been massive
property damage and large–scale theft of property, notably land. The government has no legitimate monopoly of force and is extremely weak; it does
not and cannot effectively protect its citizens.
I will presently analyse the factors contributing to the detrimental structures in place in Colombia, and explain how these factors have contributed to the
conflict. Based on this analysis, I will attempt at finding solutions in terms of peace processes to help end the conflict as well as build after the conflict.

The Dangers Of Journalism In The Philippines
Being a journalist is one of the most riskiest jobs out there, most of them are under protection, however, some are unguarded. Death threats and
harassment are occurring more and more when the years go by. War– torn countries in the middle east are the top of the list for deadliest countries for
journalists. However, an archipelago in South Asia began to become one of the most dangerous places to report. In 1992, there was 77 deaths because
of their work in the Philippines. Another incident called the 'Maguindanao Massacre' happened in early 2009. During that time, men who were armed
with dangerous weapons killed 32 journalists along with 25 other innocent individuals. Each year, countries like the Philippines, Iraq, and Syria's
number of journalists who die per year had increased due to the recent events and unauthorized government. Laws in different countries have been
established to prevent the killings of journalist and give them protection that they need in order to be comfortable. There has been a law called the
'Shield law" which is created to protect journalists and reporter privileges. The privilege includes the right of news reporters to refuse to testify
information. This law gives them protection against being forced to confess confidential information in the state/regions law.

Colombia has a long history of wicked political battling, including the semi common war of the 1940s and 1950s known as La Violencia, which set
outfitted state armies of the Liberal and Conservative gatherings against one another and about decimated the nation. The violence never totally
stopped. It was leftovers of the Liberal party civilian army that structured the first and most conspicuous guerrilla development, the Revolutionary
Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), in the 1960s. Also it was in response to the rekindled guerrilla danger, first from the FARC and afterward from the
National Liberation Army (ELN), that the first illegal paramilitary groups establishments were initiated as additional units to the Colombian armed

The former was certainly true with development of the techniques and tactics used, and the latter shaped the FARC leaders' ideology. Though the

Literary estimates show that FARC was responsible for the trade of nearly $2 million per day in drug trafficking. Money and political strength were
near the heart of the groups' daily functions. The finance of terrorism is also where the vulnerability in their maintenance lives. As described by

What is the FARC?
An organized crime group or terrorist group known as FARC is scattered across in remote rural areas or dense jungles throughout Colombia. The
FARC is still active, but significantly weakened. The FARC is fifty–three years old and is considered the oldest and largest guerrilla group in Columbia.
The dense history behind the origins of FARC dates back sixty–nine years ago. Drug trafficking and kidnapping were not the heart of this group, but
instead it was the message of political revolution.
The History Behind FARC
In 1948, Colombia's capital city of BogotГЎ consisted of two political parties. Those two political parties were marked as the Conservatives and the
Liberals. The two parties had different beliefs, however both parties were made up primarily of the bourgeois elite from the country's capital. During

However, once the government opened discussions with the Soviet Union, the funds stop coming in from the Soviet Union, so they started to rely on

industry in order to hold them for ransom, and the FARC have also attacked some of the crucial pipelines along the territories in which they are

peace process with the Colombian government. This peace agreement can be both detrimental and beneficial for the oil sector; that being said, since
2015 when both parties agreed to cease fire in order to start the peace negotiations there has been a significant reduction in the attacks to pipelines and
oil fields around the country (Thompson, 2016). On the other hand, the demobilizations with the signing

Colombia And The Revolutionary Armed Forces Of Colombia
In Colombia, a historic peace accord has been brokered between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) that is set
to end half a century of conflict between the state and the terrorist organization. The FARC rebels have long been a powerful member of the cocaine
trade in Colombia and beyond, aiding in the development and exportation of the drug to the United States. With the alliance between the FARC rebels
and the Colombian government pending, the FARC will be demilitarized and integrated back into Colombian society for the first time in more than 50
years. Upon this historic event, roughly 60% of Colombia's coca, the plant used to produce cocaine, will be relinquished from the hold of the rebels. The

government intervened in the situation, authorizing "Plan Colombia," a $1.3 billion aid package intended to reinforce the Colombian government and
build up their military. With this support, anti–drug programs were initiated that slowed the FARC profits from the drug trade, today leaving the FARC
controlling 60% of the world's coca crops and earning anywhere from $200 million up to $1 billion annually from the drug trade. The current peace
accord talks began on February 23, 2012, when delegates from both the FARC and the Colombian government started meeting covertly in Havana,
Cuba. Following the formation of the Havana Accord on August 26 of that same year, formal peace negotiations began on September 4. This accord
makes clear six focal points: "(1) 'integrated agricultural development policy,' (2) 'political participation' for the FARC, (3) 'end of the
conflict'–Disarmament, (4) 'solution to the problem of illicit drugs,' (5) 'victims,' and (6) 'implementation, verification, and ratification' by the
Colombian People." For the purposes of this paper, agenda points 1 and 4 will be most heavily referenced and analyzed. Agenda Item 1 was agreed
upon on May 26, 2013. The Rural Reform Agreement "focuses on the people, the small producer, land access and distribution, the fight against poverty,
stimuli to agricultural and livestock production and the reactivation of the rural economy." The success of this endeavor is critical to eliminating the

The United States and Colombia
The United States and Colombia have had a long standing relationship through the course of history. There have been trade agreements signed by the
two parties; also negotiations have taken part in regard to development strategies on the part of the US to promote the rule of Democracy and it's
institutions in Colombia, where illegal armed forces sought to control many aspects of the country's development. Aside from trade agreements the
United States and Columbia have also had agreements related to the protection of the environment, renewable energy, control of chemical weapons,
and so on. We are going to discuss these concepts in more detail throughout the paper to determine the socio–economic and political relations between
the two countries, and try to create a perspective for the future of the relationship between them.
The cooperation and relationship between the two countries began on June 19, 1882 when the United States recognized Colombia's declaration of
independence (Colombia – Office of the Historian, pg.1). This relationship has been maintained more concretely since the 19th century. The first
bilateral treaty was signed by the two countries in Bogota, which is the capital city of Colombia, on October the 3rd 1824, and was known as the
"General Convention of Peace, Amity, Navigation and Commerce" (Beittel, pg.10). At the time, present day Colombia was part of then 'Gran
Colombia' comprised of other countries like Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, Northern Peru and

The Drug war in Mexico and Colombia has persisted for...
The Drug war in Mexico and Colombia has persisted for decades and will continue to do so if we don't change our plan of action. Colombia
notoriously was and still continues to be a major drug producer, exporting a large percentage of its drugs to the U.S and neighboring Latin America.
Analysts predict that Mexico is soon becoming the next Colombia of the 1960–1990 era and has the potential to surpass Colombia in terms of
producing, selling and distributing drugs both domestically and internationally. There have been numerous strategies to detain and halt the production,
and flow of drugs altogether, yet it seems like they are inefficient and incapable of doing away with this problem. Some governments have sought to

We seek to shed some light on the two vastly similar, yet different stories that Mexico and Colombia share in this topic. Once the history of this
conflict has been detailed, we can focus on any possible solutions and what their effects can be if implemented. This special commission of the U.N.
was created to reform drug war policies and that is precisely what we intend on doing. The first step to eradicating the flow of drugs and the drug wars
that result from it is to accept that what is currently being pursued is flawed and counter–productive.
Colombia went from being a small time player in the drug industry when compared to Peru and Bolivia during the late 1900's, to the number one
cocaine producer and exporter. This entire issue is an inherently complex one. In Colombia we are dealing with armed insurgency groups willing to
defend their lands and lives with force. These major groups consist(ed) of the Medellin Cartel, Cali Cartel, the FARC, the M–19, and the ELN. They
resort to kidnappings, murder, and extortion to try and negotiate terms with the government, terms that are to assure their safety and permanence. The
Colombian government has historically, had a difficult time deciding its policy towards negotiating with these radical groups. At first, they took a
non–negotiating stance, unwavering and

In the ensuing years, the FARC have waged a destructive and dedicated campaign against the government of Colombia. Most recently, the FARC has

Essay On The FARC
The FARC has been the longest standing insurgency group in all of Latin America. As of recently, this organization has come under scrutiny due to
their human rights transgressions and interference in international investments and properties in the country of Colombia. It is also scorned because of
their involvement in the illegal cocaine drug trade and for their hypocrisy of not supporting poor Colombian peasants – that goal ultimately being part
of their mission statement. The composition and tactics of the FARC have significantly changed since they became involved with the drug trade. This
investigation will delve into whether the drug trade caused the organization to stray from helping the peasants. Therefore, although FARC ideologies...

Before the implementation of the drug trade, the FARC was of greater help to peasants. The FARC became the most effective form of defense for
many peasants attempting to colonize their own farmland in the Amazon (Leech 20). The FARC's leadership consisted of peasants, unlike other
groups with similar goals that were labeled as "exclusionary to peasants" according to the historian Marco Palacios (Leech 18). The FARC would
provide peasants with education in exchange for food and supplies (Cunningham 477). The FARC established its own health care, schools, a judicial
system, and agrarian economy in the 1970s and '80s (Macmillan 238).
The introduction of the drug trade significantly altered the composition and actions of the FARC. President Alvaro Uribe himself talks to the
international community about the FARC's facilitation of the drug trade. Velez states multiple times that the FARC is financed by illicit drugs (Velez,
3). The FARC's involvement in the drug trade caused it to become a primary target of the "War on Drugs". The Clinton administration labeled FARC
members 'narco–guerrillas' (Leech 68). The FARC is seen as having been converted from an activist organization to an opportunistic one through the
introduction of the drug trade. The FARC's rapid recruitment did not allow for ideological instruction, therefore changing the makeup of the group
(Montoya 32). Finally, there is Plan Colombia, which

The Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) is the world's largest group (approximately 12,000) among the Colombian rebels, and is
one of the world's richest guerrilla forces. The FARC's roots can be tracked back to the rebel guerrilla bands of La Violencia– the civil war between the
Liberal and Conservative parties from 1948 until 1958. In the 60's the FARC had had enough of the liberal party's leadership and turned to
communism. This movement was led by a senior leader in one of the groups' guerrilla bands named Manuel "Sureshot" Marulanda (his real name was

Colombia 's Struggle With Domestic Guerilla Groups And...
From the Cold War to more recent struggles with domestic guerilla groups and drug cartels, Colombia has not had a time of peace since they became
independent nearly 200 years ago. None of these conflicts have resolved peacefully. They were usually caused by difference in culture or beliefs.
Corruption within their own government has left Colombia without legitimate authority; the citizens have nobody to trust, be helped by, or be
defended by. Colombia has the potential to institute a stable and effective government, but it has some major complications holding it back. Colombia
has been in constant war and armed conflict, domestic and foreign, since the early 19th century; to make matters worse, corruption within their own
government has left Colombia unstable. Colombia entered World War II on the side of the Allies while "social and political divisions within the
country intensified". After the war, politics became much more violent, especially after the assassination of the mayor of BogotГЎ. This sparked
protests that developed into riots, which led the political party affiliates into guerrilla fighting. In the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations,
Thomson Gale wrote "This extended and bloody period . . . claimed 150,000 to 200,000 lives . . . the political system in the 1950s had become

The Revolutionary Armed Forces Of Colombia ( Farc ) Essay
1. The "shifting landscape" that Welch speaks of refers to a global political shift where power has moved from the central institutions to smaller,
intrastate actors. Interstate wars have declined sharply in number since the end of World War II. The rise of nongovernmental and international
organizations, the establishment of cooperation agreements and confidence–building measures, and the increasing presence of the news media, are all
elements that have relegated traditional wars to a thing of the past. These non–state actors can be terrorist groups, guerrillas, organized crime networks
or even a combination of state and non–state actors. The majority of the groups work underneath larger networks whose goal is the conquest of local or
national sovereignty–for example, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). They try to acquire the attributes of the State, through
violence, corruption, ideological persuasion or political subversion. They look to take over a territory and its population in order to set up their
political, military, and social institutions. They use oppressive methods to fulfill their aim. Smaller networks do not always want to overthrow the
State, but to substitute their form of governance to meet their goals. The forces, national or international, that have been assembled to quell these types
of threats are usually more powerful than the organizations they are trying to defeat. Conversely, non–state actors attempt to develop alliances with

The Colombian Culture
The Colombian culture is formed from the inheritance of the indigenous peoples present in the territory since ancient times, the Spanish traditions
adopted during the colonial period and the African Customs incorporated by the slaves that led the conquistadors. This mixture of cultures constitutes a
society with traits common to the rest of Latin American countries but, at the same time, very different also. Indeed, even withinColombia's own
territory there are many differences between regions and others. Geographic diversity–can be found from tropical beaches to mountains of more than
5,000 meters in height with perpetual snows–and the natural isolation of some areas has led to this diversity. Some of the most important cultural
groups according to their location are the so–called cops, located in the Altiplano Cundiboyacense; the countries, settled in Antioquia; The foresters,
Settlers of the eastern plains; the Vallunos, settled in the area of Valle del Cauca; the coastal, inhabitants of the Caribbean coast, and the Santander,
residents of the departments of Santander and Norte de Santander. All these groups are characterized by showing great cultural differences among
themselves, which makes Colombia a fascinating country to know and enter into the day to day of its inhabitants. Given these circumstances in the

Given the tumultuous political environment in Colombia during this period, it may come as a surprise that a third round of peace talks commenced
in 1998. The FARC, having reached its peak during this time, was waging an all out insurgency against the state. The push for peace came at the
behest of the citizenry rather than the state. In a strong display of unity, 10 million Colombians voted to for the Mandate of Peace in October of 1997
in a popular vote. Thus the government–under the Pastrana administration–initiated peace negotiations amidst a brutal war with the FARC. President

Through the public hearings, 25,000 delegates participated in presenting various proposals for peace. This process was also unique in that various
international actors, including European, Latin American, and Canadian governments as well as representatives from the United Nations, participated
either directly or indirectly. U.S. support for the negotiations was weakened, however, by the fact that the FARC had recently abducted and killed three
American activists. This had the effect of weakening the overall peace process. Nonetheless, the third peace process had begun.
The agenda for negotiation in May of 1999 included a variety of different topics, focusing on 12 main issues and 48 sub–issues. These issues included:
"human rights, agrarian policy (the distribution of lands bought with drug money and the substitution of illicit crops), natural resources, the revision of

Besides their intentions were helping the lower marginalized class in the beginning, they turned to extreme methods to meet their goals, such as
kidnapping, assassinations, and drug trafficking. This conflict has been ongoing for over 50 years, but last year a ceasefire agreement was signed,
which polarized the population because it provided amnesty and even financial aid for FARC members, who many believe to be terrorists. The main
origin about the war in Colombia was the possession of the land in order to obtain power (Padilla, L.,2015). Unfortunately, those who received the worst

This communist guerrilla supported the expropriation of land for those who wanted to work it, and they were pretended to do it in the way that the

objectives would be achieved through weapons and violence. After that, the Conservative Government tried to end the movement but what they did
was to give rise to the FARC movement in 1964 (Molano, A., 2007). One important point is that the main FARC founders were small farmers and land
workers who had joined together to fight against the levels of inequality in Colombia. Because of that, a lot of poor rural people joined to this
movement which promised lands and "justice" at that time. Whereas the National Front ended at 1974, FARC continued to grow in numbers, reaching

The study of history is appreciative of different events that mark transcendental patterns in the course of human existence; there have been reference
points from which to establish humanity's archetypes, from which humanity takes a position, and from which humanity as a whole has created a
complex identity. The Colombian case– in regards to its current efforts in creating peace between a long withstanding rebel group and an exhausted
nation – is no exception. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known commonly as the FARC, have been a paramount contributor to the

An accord of such proportions is unprecedented in the current age of political transparency that has undertaken governments globally.
Although the peace plebiscite details how "peacebuilding requires a definitive solution to the illicit drugs problem" ("Final Agreement To End The

U.S. Ambassador to Colombia – to Newspaper El Tiempo, the FARC's inability to cooperate, despite pressure from theUnited States, is further
elaborated upon:
The FARC have not complied, in my opinion, with their obligations based on the agreement. What does the agreement say? [It] says that the FARC
need to give information about drug trafficking so that there [will be] investigations that make way for all that is judicial monitoring, which has not
happened. (...) What is the main political problem of the Farc? That there is no confidence of the people in them. And that failure to comply with the
norms, particularly drug trafficking, simply underscores the impression that the FARC do not really want to get involved in the democratic
institutionality of Colombia. (PeГ±a)

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia, or FARC, have been waging a guerilla war against the Columbian government for thirty–eight years.

It only leads to the belief that they do not wish to patch things up and stop the violence. They want a socialist government and the Columbian people
want the democratic system that is in place now. I believe that until the FARC gets what they want, they will not stop their terrorist ways. So how does
the Columbian government accomplish this?
One way to do this is to stop their flow of money. The FARC has admitted to making their money from the illegal drug industry. If the Columbian
government can somehow intercept the drugs before it leaves the country or intercept the millions of dollars flowing into Columbia from the drug
sales, then the FARC would have a difficult time getting the weapons they need to commit these terrorist acts. The Columbian government is in the
middle of trying to solve these problems and has been since the MedellГn and Cali "cartels" have been around. Obviously this has not been an easy task.
Since the late 1990's the United States and the Columbian government have been trying to work out a plan to help the Columbian government fight
the drug trade. It is called Plan Columbia and has been in effect since late 1999 and early 2000. The objective of Plan Columbia is for the U.S. to
shift massive aid to the Columbian government. The amount of the aid is around $1.5 billion. This is to help train the Columbian military on the war

The Colombian Civil War Essay
There is a civil war currently being fought in Columbia, but it is nothing new to the residents of the country. Conflicts have been on going for over
100 years, in the beginning dealing with the ideological differences of the conservative and liberal parties. In 1928 an unsuccessful coup was
attempted to take over the government (which was controlled by liberals), and the ensuing civil wars killed over 20,000 people. In the 1950's coffee
prices fell as unemployment rose, and guerrilla groups prompted a communist revolution. The current civil war had its direct beginnings in 1964, with

Interestingly enough, FARC has spent a lot of time fighting paramilitaries funded by Columbia's own drug cartels. These groups act as hired guns who
fight guerrillas, religious leaders and civilians, and who are supposedly fighting the war against drug trafficking. (On an ironical note, sections of the
paramilitary, namely the AUC, and FARC support their efforts by actually taxing cocaine production and profits).
In recent years though, killing has escalated [25,000 killed in 1995, with an average of 3,500 (mostly civilians) dying on average], though it
appears the leaders of the Columbian government are making an effort to finally end this war. In 1998 President Pastrana tried to make peace with
FARC by demilitarizing a safe zone for them (though it is believed that many of the hostages taken by the group are kept in this area). The current
President is Alvaro Uribe, whose platform for election was to end the hostilities that have been tearing the nation apart for nearly 40 years (with
currently involved members). Recently FARC has killed or taken hostage over 30 mayoral candidates, and have called the electoral system a farce.
Peace talks have resumed, with up to 4000 guerilla and paramilitary fighters have turned their weapons into the government since Uribe took power,
and AUC announced it would demobilize its troops by 2005. This is a big step, especially with FARC presently being

Spanish Independence and Colombia's Long Struggle

  • 1. Spanish Independence Growing up my mom always told me right before I go to bed, "never forget the history of your country, it is where you come from, our independence is key to life." Well the history of my country is quite complicated however understandable. The population of native groups such as the Carib, Arawak, Tairona, Muisca, dwindled due to war and diseases introduced by Spanish individuals during the 1500s. The areas of these of these groups were then divided into Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela from once being New Granada. In 1810 my country declared our independence, however, our independence was not fully declared until Simon Bolivar brought troops to fight back in the Battle of BoyacГЎ during 1819. After the war Bolivar, created New Gran Colombia Republic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But the language of English has a placement in the education system for curriculum; however, very few kids speak or even know it because the language is rarely spoken. Although English is rarely spoken in my country, often a variety of people in the business industry in Colombia understand English. However, a majority of most foreign businesses creating business there would be fluent in Spanish. For example most business cards would be printed with one side of the card in English and on the other side in Spanish; majority of the time the business cards will be presented with the Spanish side facing. On the other hand a very confusing aspect about Colombia is the religion. In this case please notice that the constitution of Colombia states and guarantees freedom of religion; however for a long period of time Catholicism has been the religion for more than 90% of Colombia. Before my country obtained our independence the Roman Catholic Church controlled the Colombian educational system, however our government increased the control during the early 19th century. Today we have one of the best educational systems within Latin America; we currently have over 8 million students enrolled in higher education averaging an estimated of eight years in total. Public spending on education in Colombia is nearly 4% of Gross domestic product and the country's literacy rate is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Summary: The Revolutionary Armed Forces Of Colombia The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia– FARC) is the largest and oldest paramilitary group operating in South America, specifically based in the Republic of Colombia. For more than half a century, the FARC has been terrorizing the Colombian Government and populous by means of extortion, kidnapping, and assassination, in hopes of reaching its goals of controlling Colombia's political system. The United States (U.S.) Government categorizes the FARC as a terrorist organization. It is imperative the US immediately implements and conducts full spectrum Human Intelligence (HUMINT) operations against the FARC in order to disrupt their efforts of controlling the Colombia or have an influence in the ... The constant heavy rainfall have significantly contributed to the overall soil erosion. The soil has also been damaged by overuse of pesticides by farmers who cultivate crops. The most significant causes for deforestation are the exaggerated commercial exploitation of the forest in the country. Vehicle emissions in the big cities are also the cause of the pollution problem. Safe drinking water is available mostly for urban areas and not as much of the rural areas. • 3. Case Study: Plan Colombia When it comes to illegal drugs, they are a part of Colombia's problem with terrorism. "During the last half century, the country has been in the midst of a dirty war" (White, 2014 p.254). That is in which terrorists and governmental forces fight a shadow war that is interconnected with drug production. The revolutionary armed forces of Colombia (FARC), is actually the oldest and largest terrorist group that operated against the Colombian government. Now the United Sates had long been involved in Colombian affairs, and it began with a new project called "plan Colombia." Plan Colombia is a joint effort by the United States and Colombia to reduce violence and illegal drugs. This plan began in 1999, with the purpose to move against three different ... • 4. Essay on Columbia America's War on Drugs Chaos best describes the current state of the Republic of Colombia. Rebelling terrorist groups from within the country threaten to topple Colombia's actual government. Again and again, Colombia has shown its inability to fight the rebelling terrorists and simultaneously protect its civilians from harm. America has several reasons to intervene, with its military force if necessary, in Colombia. America must be protected against drugs and the countless crimes and social problems that drugs inevitably produce. By stopping the flow of drugs, America will also stop the flow of funds to terrorist groups like the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia, who receive a large amount, if not the majority of their funding from ... According to the National Drug Intelligence Center, in the year 2001, 19.5 percent of 8th Grade students, 37.2 percent of high school students in their sophomore year, and 41.4 percent of high school seniors used illegal drugs (Information). Illegal drugs, most of which come from Colombia, are poisoning the American youth. Drugs cause more than just the immediate problem of addiction. According to the National Drug Intelligence Center, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, suicide, truancy, cheating, and unhealthy family relationships pose greater risk for teenagers who take drugs than with their contemporaries who do not (Information). The United States of America has every right to protect its citizens from drugs and the crime and social problems that follow them. Since September 11, 2001, the United States has fought a war against terrorist organizations worldwide. America spends 64 billion dollars annually on illicit drugs–––and much of this money funds the same terrorist groups who threaten America (International 24). If America hopes to defeat her enemies, the terrorists, then she must shut down illegal drug operations. Drugs fund terrorism. • 5. FARC In Colombia The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were formed in 1964 with the stated intention of overthrowing the government and installing a Marxist regime. After modest beginnings, the group rose to prominence through the 1980s and 1990s as its association with the drugs trade improved its financial standing. At its peak, it was the largest and best–equipped guerrilla force in Latin America. According to a timeline written by BBC (2016) the major events throughout the armed conflict history in Colombia is as it follows: "In 1964, the FARC was formed by Manuel Marulanda after fleeing a government assault on communist groups in the country. Then, in 1996, the FARC took 60 Colombian soldiers hostage, which was the first mass abduction carried out by the group. Three years later, President Pastrana and leader Manuel "Sureshot" Marulanda announced the start of a period of "negotiation and dialogue" following a meeting between the two in July the previous year. Large areas of the country were demilitarized to facilitate the talks. Nevertheless, in 2002, the FARC rebels hijacked a domestic flight carrying 24 passengers, prompting President Andres Pastrana to end peace talks which began in 1999. In 2002, Senator Ingrid Betancourt was kidnapped and held for six years before being rescued by the Colombian military along with 14 other hostages. This is considered one of the most horrifying crimes committed by the FARC. Later in 2008, the group confirmed the death of FARC founder Manuel Marulanda from heart attack. In 15 November 2011, the group announced that Timoleon Jimenez, alias Timochenko, was the new leader of the group. • 6. Conflict in Colombia Conflict in Colombia Colombia is a Latin American country located in South America that has been ravaged by violence, starvation, and large–scale inequality between higher and lower classes. The chaos in Colombia has been between rebel forces and the government and has lasted for over fifty years. These rebel forces have fought to achieve their Liberalist lead goals of overthrowing the current democratic government of Colombia and replacing it with a communist government. La Violencia was the main contributor to the conflict between the resistance fighters of Colombia and the Colombian government that has brought on violence and terror from the violent actions between the Liberal and Conservative parties in the 1950's. , which has directly brought on the violence and terror from the guerrilla groups. In the mid 20th century, Colombian politics were dominated by the Liberal and Conservative parties with fierce supporters that carried out the ideological and social differences into violence. Jorge Eliecer Gaitan, a popular leader of the liberal party in Colombia launched social, economic, and political modernising reforms in the 1930's. Evolution Of The FARC The Colombian society has been greatly impacted by the FARC since it has been the spark for various conflicts, deaths, and tragedies due to guerrillas and drug trafficking formed by disagreement towards the government of Colombia. "Not only did FARC use its influence to control the drug trade and tax local communities to fund its activities, but it also enforced its own laws, mediated disputes, provided some limited social services and was involved in the building of roads and other infrastructure in regions it held for decades." After his mighty fall new organizations like the FARC rose up the occasion both politically and drug–wise. The Evolution of the FARC written by Alfredo Molano, showcases the changed and the events that led to the political rise of this gigantic corporation throughout many years of its existence persisting. "Fierce battles, often characterized by extreme cruelty, marked the early twentieth century in Colombia, as land–hungry peasants and their reformist allies faced off against the country's land owning oligarchy, which was backed by the conservative hierarchy of the Catholic Church. The land owners and Church leaders, along with peasants under their control, were organized as the Conservative Party; other, reform–minded peasants and their allies were known as Liberals. On the rich and violent soil of those conflicts lie the origins of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country's most powerful present–day guerrilla group. From 1930 to 1946, a series of Liberal Party–run administrations, referred to in Colombian history as the Liberal Republic, inaugurated land reform that restricted ancestral privileges and unleashed furious political opposition from the Conservatives. After the internally divided Liberals fell in 1946, a new Conservative government used political violence to regain the oligarchy lands and remain in power. Then Jorge Eliecer Gaitan, a charismatic Liberal and land–reform movement leader, was gunned down in Bogota in 1948. In response, popular insurrections broke out in the capital and in virtually every city where the Liberals were strong. The assassination unleashed a decade–long heightening of the old conflict. The new strife was known simply as La Violencia. Between 1948 and 1958, La Violencia took the lives of more than 300,000 Colombians" (Molano, 2000). During many years the Colombian ... In August 2002, Alvaro Uribe Velez was elected as President of Colombia in the middle of a complicated situation due to the threat of the terrorist organization known as FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia). Later, in September 2002, President Uribe issued the Democratic Defense and Security Policy to set the parameters about civilian participation under the construction of a collective security principle. • 12. Chapter Summary: Drugs And Militias 2/may/17 Drugs and Militias Mitchell brings to attention the two actors the principle and the agent. In the relationship between principals and agents the principal can never be certain of complete control if behavior from other bureaucracies provide a guide to the private interest of agents and their ability to hide their interests and actions from the principal contribute substantially and systematically to the human toll of the bureaucracies of repression. For some of the agents the violence may simply be a task to perform in order to achieve the leader's goals, for others violence may be a raw end not a means. Agents can seize opportunities provided by their offices and uniforms to supply personal gratification from violence. Leaders justify policies and provide excuses for their actions to motivate their agents and perpetrators. There are two well–known problems for the principal, the problem with goal variance, where the agents have goal independent of those of the principal, and the problem of information asymmetry where agents have an information advantage over the principle. Its origins can be traced back to 1964. Since its inception, tens of thousands of people have been killed, injured or kidnapped and hundreds of thousands have been displaced due to the conflict. There has been massive property damage and large–scale theft of property, notably land. The government has no legitimate monopoly of force and is extremely weak; it does not and cannot effectively protect its citizens. This movement was led by a senior leader in one of the groups' guerrilla bands named Manuel "Sureshot" Marulanda (his real name was Pedro Antonio Marin). In 1966 Manual named his group the Revolutionary Armed Forces ofColombia (FARC). (Hanson & Renwick, 2009) In the 1920's and 30's the Colombian guerrilla ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Hanson & Renwick, 2009) Since November of 2012 the FARC and the Colombian government have been trying to negotiate an end to the 50 year old insurgency. On 26 May 2013 the FARC and the Colombian government agreed on land reform. This reform would provide economic and social development of rural areas and land to poor farmers. This is the first step in six months of peace talks that are taking place in Cuba. A joint statement warned that the agreement is "conditioned on reaching an agreement on the totality of the agenda," because the talks are based on the principle that "nothing is agreed upon until everything is agreed upon." • 29. Colombia 's Struggle With Domestic Guerilla Groups And... From the Cold War to more recent struggles with domestic guerilla groups and drug cartels, Colombia has not had a time of peace since they became independent nearly 200 years ago. None of these conflicts have resolved peacefully. They were usually caused by difference in culture or beliefs. Corruption within their own government has left Colombia without legitimate authority; the citizens have nobody to trust, be helped by, or be defended by. Colombia has the potential to institute a stable and effective government, but it has some major complications holding it back. Colombia has been in constant war and armed conflict, domestic and foreign, since the early 19th century; to make matters worse, corruption within their own government has left Colombia unstable. Colombia entered World War II on the side of the Allies while "social and political divisions within the country intensified". After the war, politics became much more violent, especially after the assassination of the mayor of BogotГЎ. This sparked protests that developed into riots, which led the political party affiliates into guerrilla fighting. In the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations, Thomson Gale wrote "This extended and bloody period . . . claimed 150,000 to 200,000 lives . . . the political system in the 1950s had become irrelevant in the midst of the violence" The government was no longer functioning and could not contain the violence. • 30. The Revolutionary Armed Forces Of Colombia ( Farc ) Essay 1. The "shifting landscape" that Welch speaks of refers to a global political shift where power has moved from the central institutions to smaller, intrastate actors. Interstate wars have declined sharply in number since the end of World War II. The rise of nongovernmental and international organizations, the establishment of cooperation agreements and confidence–building measures, and the increasing presence of the news media, are all elements that have relegated traditional wars to a thing of the past. These non–state actors can be terrorist groups, guerrillas, organized crime networks or even a combination of state and non–state actors. The majority of the groups work underneath larger networks whose goal is the conquest of local or national sovereignty–for example, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). They try to acquire the attributes of the State, through violence, corruption, ideological persuasion or political subversion. They look to take over a territory and its population in order to set up their political, military, and social institutions. They use oppressive methods to fulfill their aim. Smaller networks do not always want to overthrow the State, but to substitute their form of governance to meet their goals. The forces, national or international, that have been assembled to quell these types of threats are usually more powerful than the organizations they are trying to defeat. Conversely, non–state actors attempt to develop alliances with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. The Colombian Culture The Colombian culture is formed from the inheritance of the indigenous peoples present in the territory since ancient times, the Spanish traditions adopted during the colonial period and the African Customs incorporated by the slaves that led the conquistadors. This mixture of cultures constitutes a society with traits common to the rest of Latin American countries but, at the same time, very different also. Indeed, even withinColombia's own territory there are many differences between regions and others. Geographic diversity–can be found from tropical beaches to mountains of more than 5,000 meters in height with perpetual snows–and the natural isolation of some areas has led to this diversity. Some of the most important cultural groups according to their location are the so–called cops, located in the Altiplano Cundiboyacense; the countries, settled in Antioquia; The foresters, Settlers of the eastern plains; the Vallunos, settled in the area of Valle del Cauca; the coastal, inhabitants of the Caribbean coast, and the Santander, residents of the departments of Santander and Norte de Santander. All these groups are characterized by showing great cultural differences among themselves, which makes Colombia a fascinating country to know and enter into the day to day of its inhabitants. Given these circumstances in the country there is a rich variety of fauna and flora, since the quantities of species find their habitat in different regions of the country. "The ... • 32. Understanding Terrorism In Colombia The word terrorism has different interpretations depending on the specific threats that the governments face and the problems that they want to combat. In some historical periods terrorism has had a positive image, associated with democratization, self–determination, and struggle against oppression, while in others it has had an eminently negative image related to indiscriminate violence against the population and the threat against national and international systems. In these modern times terrorism is domination through terror, is to have control with violent acts whose purpose is to infuse fear. • 34. Essay About Peace In Cologeria Given the tumultuous political environment in Colombia during this period, it may come as a surprise that a third round of peace talks commenced in 1998. The FARC, having reached its peak during this time, was waging an all out insurgency against the state. The push for peace came at the behest of the citizenry rather than the state. In a strong display of unity, 10 million Colombians voted to for the Mandate of Peace in October of 1997 in a popular vote. Thus the government–under the Pastrana administration–initiated peace negotiations amidst a brutal war with the FARC. President Pastrana took office under the promise of implementing two initiatives: the first was to negotiate with the guerrillas and paramilitaries in an effort to ... This process was also unique in that various international actors, including European, Latin American, and Canadian governments as well as representatives from the United Nations, participated either directly or indirectly. U.S. support for the negotiations was weakened, however, by the fact that the FARC had recently abducted and killed three American activists. This had the effect of weakening the overall peace process. Nonetheless, the third peace process had begun. The agenda for negotiation in May of 1999 included a variety of different topics, focusing on 12 main issues and 48 sub–issues. These issues included: "human rights, agrarian policy (the distribution of lands bought with drug money and the substitution of illicit crops), natural resources, the revision of the economic and social development model, reform of the Justice system and the state, accords on International Humanitarian Law (IHL), the redefinition of the peace–time role of the armed forces, and international agreements and the democratic mechanisms legitimizing these." Efforts were made on behalf of both parties to build confidence. Among these efforts was the initiation of ceasefires during Christmas and the New Year in 1999 /2000. • 35. Summary: The Fuerzas Armadas De Colombia The Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) rebelled against the arranged Government in 1964. Besides their intentions were helping the lower marginalized class in the beginning, they turned to extreme methods to meet their goals, such as kidnapping, assassinations, and drug trafficking. This conflict has been ongoing for over 50 years, but last year a ceasefire agreement was signed, which polarized the population because it provided amnesty and even financial aid for FARC members, who many believe to be terrorists. The main origin about the war in Colombia was the possession of the land in order to obtain power (Padilla, L.,2015). Unfortunately, those who received the worst part were the civilians. ... This communist guerrilla supported the expropriation of land for those who wanted to work it, and they were pretended to do it in the way that the "oligarchies" left them, whether through politics or violence. After some political changes and killings, the guerrilla proclaimed in 1960 that its objectives would be achieved through weapons and violence. After that, the Conservative Government tried to end the movement but what they did was to give rise to the FARC movement in 1964 (Molano, A., 2007). One important point is that the main FARC founders were small farmers and land workers who had joined together to fight against the levels of inequality in Colombia. Because of that, a lot of poor rural people joined to this movement which promised lands and "justice" at that time. Whereas the National Front ended at 1974, FARC continued to grow in numbers, reaching its 20.700 members (Noticias RCN.com, 2004), gaining popularity and becoming rich and dependent in drug trafficking, extortion, and other illegal ... The Colombian case– in regards to its current efforts in creating peace between a long withstanding rebel group and an exhausted nation – is no exception. An accord of such proportions is unprecedented in the current age of political transparency that has undertaken governments globally. Although the peace plebiscite details how "peacebuilding requires a definitive solution to the illicit drugs problem" ("Final Agreement To End The Armed Conflict"), the FARC by no means intend to relinquish a fundamental resource of such magnitude. In a statement given by Kevin Whitaker – the U.S. Ambassador to Colombia – to Newspaper El Tiempo, the FARC's inability to cooperate, despite pressure from theUnited States, is further elaborated upon: The FARC have not complied, in my opinion, with their obligations based on the agreement. What does the agreement say? [It] says that the FARC need to give information about drug trafficking so that there [will be] investigations that make way for all that is judicial monitoring, which has not happened. (...) What is the main political problem of the Farc? That there is no confidence of the people in them. And that failure to comply with the norms, particularly drug trafficking, simply underscores the impression that the FARC do not really want to get involved in the democratic institutionality of Colombia. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia Essay The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia, or FARC, have been waging a guerilla war against the Columbian government for thirty–eight years. The organization has a Marxist–Socialist ideological base and has been terrorizing Columbia for some time now. The most recent development is Senator Martha Catalina Daniels was shot twice in the head and killed on March 3. Her body and two others were found at the bottom of a ravine about twenty–five miles west of the Columbia's capital, BogotГЎ. They had also been tortured. This is not unusual for the FARC. It only leads to the belief that they do not wish to patch things up and stop the violence. They want a socialist government and the Columbian people want the democratic system that is in place now. I believe that until the FARC gets what they want, they will not stop their terrorist ways. So how does the Columbian government accomplish this? One way to do this is to stop their flow of money. The FARC has admitted to making their money from the illegal drug industry. If the Columbian government can somehow intercept the drugs before it leaves the country or intercept the millions of dollars flowing into Columbia from the drug sales, then the FARC would have a difficult time getting the weapons they need to commit these terrorist acts. The Columbian government is in the middle of trying to solve these problems and has been since the MedellГn and Cali "cartels" have been around. Obviously this has not been an easy task. Since the late 1990's the United States and the Columbian government have been trying to work out a plan to help the Columbian government fight the drug trade. It is called Plan Columbia and has been in effect since late 1999 and early 2000. The objective of Plan Columbia is for the U.S. to shift massive aid to the Columbian government. The amount of the aid is around $1.5 billion. This is to help train the Columbian military on the war against drugs. The U.S. will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. The Colombian Civil War Essay There is a civil war currently being fought in Columbia, but it is nothing new to the residents of the country. Conflicts have been on going for over 100 years, in the beginning dealing with the ideological differences of the conservative and liberal parties. In 1928 an unsuccessful coup was attempted to take over the government (which was controlled by liberals), and the ensuing civil wars killed over 20,000 people. In the 1950's coffee prices fell as unemployment rose, and guerrilla groups prompted a communist revolution. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Interestingly enough, FARC has spent a lot of time fighting paramilitaries funded by Columbia's own drug cartels. These groups act as hired guns who fight guerrillas, religious leaders and civilians, and who are supposedly fighting the war against drug trafficking. (On an ironical note, sections of the paramilitary, namely the AUC, and FARC support their efforts by actually taxing cocaine production and profits). In recent years though, killing has escalated [25,000 killed in 1995, with an average of 3,500 (mostly civilians) dying on average], though it appears the leaders of the Columbian government are making an effort to finally end this war. In 1998 President Pastrana tried to make peace with FARC by demilitarizing a safe zone for them (though it is believed that many of the hostages taken by the group are kept in this area). The current President is Alvaro Uribe, whose platform for election was to end the hostilities that have been tearing the nation apart for nearly 40 years (with currently involved members). Recently FARC has killed or taken hostage over 30 mayoral candidates, and have called the electoral system a farce. Peace talks have resumed, with up to 4000 guerilla and paramilitary fighters have turned their weapons into the government since Uribe took power, and AUC announced it would demobilize its troops by 2005.
