What Does Red Mean In Psychology
This section will explain the colour theory and colour symbolism and analysis what red stands for in
different fields in a premise of the Western world. It will also define the fairy tale and nonsense
literature. In this section, what previous researchers had explored about the characters and the red
garments they worn will be illustrated as well. The objects' meaning is another main focus.
Therefore, the explanation of how material culture and narrative analysis helps when studying the
representation of objects. Lastly, we will investigate the similar exhibitions to show how others have
worked within this area. 2.1 Colour symbolism

The Global Sex Trade And Its Victims: Documentary Analysis
Sex Trade – The Global Sex Trade and its Victims is a documentary that explores the exploitation of
women in the sex trafficking industry. It is an underground business that is existent in every country,
contrary to common belief. The film primarily focuses on young women that were once victims of
human trafficking. As described in the film, victims are often lured with promises of work and a
steady income. Traffickers will take out advertisements in the newspapers looking for domestic
workers, dancers, or models abroad. Victims are typically from poverty–stricken areas, and despite
the initial apprehension will accept positions abroad out of desperation. Perpetrators of sex
trafficking have the process of persuasion and enticement down ... Show more content on

Trauma theory provides insight on perpetrator's ability to control their victims. Traffickers
understand the element of captivity in complete subordination. Victims must have the feeling of
helplessness in their situation, escape is not a viable option. As described in Herman, the process of
destroying attachments requires isolation and destruction of connection with others (Herman, 2015).
Traffickers isolate their victims by placing bars over windows and locking them inside. Eventually,
victims are so accustomed to entrapment that they will not escape, even if there is an opportunity.
The destruction of connection occurs when victims experience assault and violence at the hands of
their "clients" and the lack of intervention on their behalf. They learn to trust no one to ensure their
survival; dependence on others will only result in loss. Total surrender is an inevitable consequence
for trafficking. Victims submit to their circumstances because that is their new reality. In a situation
of complete bondage, a victim only has control left over her emotions; their physical self is
completely controlled. It seems a bit counterintuitive, but, perhaps by shutting down emotionally,
victims are in a way controlling the one thing that they still

The Legalization Regulation Of The Sex Trade Essay
This paper argues for the decriminalization plus regulation of the sex trade. This paper will defend
the position that activities associated with adult prostitution (advertising, buying, soliciting, living
off the avails and keeping a bawdy house) should be decriminalized/ legalized due to: a) the
capacity for criminalization to infringe on sex worker's fundamental rights to life, liberty, and
security and b) the capacity for criminalization to prohibit sex worker's from actively preventing
harm to oneself. Philosophical support for this position will come from arguments rooted in human
rights' perspective, John Stuart Mill's "harm principle" and arguments rooted in feminist theory. The
harm principle contends "it is only justifiable to interfere with the autonomy or liberty of adults in
order to prevent harm (physical harm & deprivation of rights and liberties) occurring to other
persons". Whereas feminist theory consists of a view rooted in gender equality rights and social
justice. This paper will discuss and respond to criticisms and objections rooted in legal moralism,
and welfare paternalism that support the criminalization of prostitution. Furthermore, this paper will
draw upon arguments from Prostitution Reference, and Supreme Court of Canada's Bedford Case;
where judges and litigants interpreted criminalization of activities related prostitution within the
context of (s.213) communication, (s. 210) keeping a bawdyhouse, and (s.212) living off the avails.

Essay on Gender Inequalities: Improving or Deteriorating?
To distinguish the extent to which social divisions in gender between male and females are socially
constructed we first have to discuss the issue of stratification by gender (inequality) and the theories
which surround it. This essay will distinguish the concepts of gender inequalities in unpaid labour
and employment, the media, as well as briefly looking into violence. Through discussing each of
these concepts, we can compare the historical context of gender to the present day to see if things
have socially improved or deteriorated.
Before looking into the concepts of gender inequalities, we must first explore gender itself which is
the division into two groups – men and women. 'Society shows us that gender is a system that ...

You could apply Feinberg's theory to this as back then it was just accepted and seen as the way of
life for men and women. It was found in a 2006 study that on average 'women spent 180 minutes per
day on housework; that's 78% more time than men who spent only 101 minutes per day.' (Lader, D
2006) This reveals that even in current society women are still accepted to partake in unpaid labour
through housework rather than be in employment and this reflects the past in the United Kingdom.
This unpaid labour connects to employment rates in the second quarter of 2008 in the UK as the
employment rate was 79 per cent for men and 70 per cent for women which has remained
unchanged since 1999. (Office of National Statistics, 2008). It has to be said that in recent times, the
division between males and females is less evident but inclination towards male dominance in
employment is still shown. Today, this gender inequality is accepted in society which reveals a
strong unfairness against women in employment.
In 2006, it was reported that the gender pay gap in the UK is one of the highest in Europe: women
who work full–time earned 17% less per hour than men and women working part–time earned 39%
less per hour than men working full–time. (Office of National Statistics, 2008). However, women's
place in society and in employment has improved greatly since the Equal Pay Act of 1970. Over the
years, there has been an

Prostitution As A Form Of Sexual Abuse
Prostitution can have the meaning of, "engaging in sexual acts or activities for the exchange of
money or goods", this can also be a form of sexual abuse. Prostitution status for the countries shown
for the " number of countries prostitution is illegal: 109, number of countries prostitution is
restricted: 11, number of countries prostitution is legal: 77, number of countries with no laws for
prostitution: 5." Prostitution is illegal in all states in the US except for 11 counties in Nevada. The
Mann Act signed by President Taft on June 25, 1910.
The purpose for this law was to stop harboring immigrant prostitutes, forced prostitution and
transportation across state lines. A Representative that's named James R. Mann was how the law got
its name, this act had dealings with child pornography and prostitution. Mann came across this law
because in Chicago 1909 people told him that pimps were forcing girls and women into prostitution.
In the US arguing for keeping sexual rights and privacy won out in the landmark Supreme Court
ruling Lawrence v. Texas stating that these sodomy laws consider constitutional law of a country nor
the government. Sex trade still continues, in 2007 Atlanta's sex trade was worth $290 million. Pimps
usually come with history, like being a pimp was a family business because there was a lot of their
family member involved into that before. It's pasted from generation to generation usually.

Commodity In The Music Industry
Commodity is a word that is becoming increasingly associated with the music industry, as women
are pressured to put out a sexual image. Commodification in the music industry and society has been
present for many years. However this ubiquitous injustice has only been highlighted more recently,
due to more people speaking out about how wrong it is. I have chosen to write about this topic as I
believe is it relevant to today's society of gender equality. My topic explores all the ideas
surrounding my hypothesis of "To what extent has the Female body been commodified in the music
industry, from the 1970's to present day?" Through the use of a questionnaire, my research and

Clark (2000) "Women, Gender, and Religion," talks about how the Ancient Greeks believe men and
women were two different species. Men are the superior and women are the inferior. Clark says
{"Greek medical writers differ in their ideas about male and female bodies. The Hippocratic school
presented men and women as separate species (what we might call a "two sex" model),' whereas
Aristotle considered women to be, 'Imperfect or defective men in what has been termed a 'one sex'
model. Women lacked the firm control of bodily boundaries that men had. Women changed shape
during pregnancy, and they leaked: blood, tears, and emotion. 'Since woman does not bound herself,
she must be bounded.' This is achieved by organization of her space, prescription of her gestures,
ordering of her rituals, imposition of headgear, attendants, and other trappings."} This describes
women as a completely different and weak species, which have no control over who they are. They
are fragmented beings. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, believed that the way to "bound" the female

The Global Sex Trade And Women As The Supplier Essay
The Global Sex Trade and Women as the Supplier
Introduction
Women involved or forced into sex work (prostitution) are striped of dignity and self–worth they
come from poverty, migration and cultural backgrounds that face gender inequality (Bhat &
Pushpam, 2013, p. 3). Forced prostitution is a global problem but is more prevalent in poorer
countries (True, 2013). Victims of prostitution affect women and children of all ages (Bhat &
Pushpam, 2013, p. 3). The sex industry thrives making billions of dollars and is funded by investors,
crooked recruiters, and even corrupt government employees (Bhat & Pushpam, 2013, p. 3). Females
involved in the sex trade face inhuman treatment they are raped, demoralized, defeated and will
never live a normal life again (Bhat & Pushpam, 2013, p. 3). Many women will migrate across
borders in search for economic stability but instead will be coerced into sex work (Wonders &
Danner, 2002). Women in poorer countries with low social class face gender inequalities mainly
because of cultural and political misguidance. Strategies that can help prevent women from forced
prostitution and sex work include higher pay, a support system for women to get an education, and
government reforms to help prevent migration and the people that keep the industry thriving.
Effects of Poverty on Women
Sex workers can exist anywhere but are primarily more prevalent in poorer countries and women
and children who participate or who are forced into sex work do so

Relationship Between Leaf Size And Annual Sex Expression
Relationship between leaf size and annual sex expression in Arisaema triphyllum
VICKY NGUYEN
University of Toronto, Scarborough
Summary
Disparity in cost of reproduction has lead sexually reproducing plants to develop different methods
of dealing with the cost of reproduction, an example of this is sequential hermaphroditism, where an
individual can change sex at one point in their life. Jack in the pulpit, Arisaema triphyllum, is a
sexually dimorphic plant that exhibits sequential hermaphroditism, this study looks to see if female
A. triphyllum will exhibit the largest leaf sizes due to their need to meet higher costs of
reproduction. Forty individuals were surveyed for sex and largest leaf length per area for 7 different
locations within Morningside ravine. Individuals were analyzed for mean leaf length per sex, and
means were analyzed for significance with a 1–way ANOVA followed by a tukey test. All means
were found to be significantly different from each other with the mean of females leaves the largest,
followed by males, and asexual individuals were the smallest. Female individuals of A. triphyllum
had the largest leaf sizes to compensate for their elevated costs of reproduction. The size advantage
model explains that that female A. triphyllum will have the largest leaves because female individuals
are able to best meet the costs of reproduction at larger sizes.

The Body Politic: The Removal of Agency and the Struggle for Power The demand for sexual
services is a universal constant in human society–from the sexual slavery of the Indo–Asian colonial
period, to contemporary Canada, the relation between sex and power is an undisputed fact.
Prostitutes and concubines are and were people who struggled with power historically due to their
positions in society and their occupations; they have struggled for political access, for their own
safety, and for their freedom. By contrasting modern prostitution with concubinage in colonial Asia,
I will show how systems of justice operate in sexist and racist policies in order to regulate and

By not creating laws–and by outlawing practices which made prostitution safer for sex workers,
such as bawdy houses–the Canadian government presented the identity of the sex worker as being of
low worth and ultimately increased their vulnerability. In her examination of colonial concubines in
Asia, Stoler explored what the role of concubine entailed for colonized women: such as being
"guides to the language and mysteries of the foreign society" (116) for the European men. They
were to treat their illnesses, and essentially meant to "[keep] them alive" (116). By constructing
concubines as tools instead of people–to be used for medicine, socialization, sexual services, and
whatever else the man needed–the colonizers depersonalized the indigenous women they so clearly
required. They were in high demand–places with uneven sex ratios, such as North Sumatra, had
"intense competition" for women, sometimes resulting in assaults (220)–and yet completely
disregarded by the state as people with inner lives, friendships, families, and interests. In the context
of the colonial period, which was based on hierarchies of race and superiority, it isn 't surprising that
the colonizers would proliferate this view of the indigenous women. Colonial power was based on

Becoming Transgender In The United States
n these past few years we have seen a great deal of change in the United States. From the
legalization of gay marriage, and or the legalization of marijuana. These are things that people in the
past would think are things that should not be legalized but times change. Lately, many people not in
conform with their biological gender have been becoming the opposite sex, a transgender. Some of
the most recent well known cases of becoming transgender have to be Bruce Jenner and Rodrigo
Heng song of republican senator, Ileana Ros–Lehtinen. All this talk brings up the question of
whether sex is a psychological thing, or an anatomical thing. I believe that sex is an anatomical
thing and I also believe that becoming transgender can bring negative effects ... Show more content

I can say this from experience because I have seen transgender people at stores, and all they do is
stare at me. It gets to the point where I just want to leave because they make me so uncomfortable. I
recall going to ,my locker about a month ago with my friend during fifth period. As we were going
back to our classroom, a girl walks by and naturally a teenage boy will look at her body. I told my
friend, "she is kind of hot", to which he replied, "you do know she is transgender?" I was pretty
much socked and was really condues. Now I have no problem with her but what she did was
uncomfortable. As she passed between us, she was lifting her shirt and touching her but. I was
uncomfortable because I tend to see women as people who are respectful and don't do that kind of
stuff. The girl did = not show any private parts but she did make me uncomfortable. This brings me
to the article, when a lawsuit in Minnesota was placed. The transgender which is labeled, "Student
X", was lifting her clothes and asking to trade body parts. Obviously this would make her peers
uncomfortable. What makes it all the ,most weird, is that people consider what this girl did as
something all girls do. While some girls may dance inappropriately, I am almost positive girls don't

The Sex Trafficking Trade
The sex trafficking trade has been largely acquainted with countries in Europe and South America of
the years. Nonetheless, this epidemic in reality has been in the United States for some time. The
United States has become tolerable because of the amount of money the sex business industry brings
in annually. The youths trapped in prostitution, brothel, massage services has been on the upsurge
due to a lack of assistance. Lack of acknowledgment by the government and the media has been
astounding. To comprehend how to combat the issue one must be aware there has been a problem

Instead youths receive treatment and counseling to overcome the trauma they endured during their
victimization.
States such as New York, Georgia and Florida have established special programs for youths and
young women that are victims of both domestic and foreign sex trafficking. These groups provide
different types of services to youth such as cognitive–behavioral counseling, legal representation
and health services (Fong & Cardoso, 2010). However, many also receive some type of life skills
training and assistance with employment through legitimate employers. Foreign youths often receive
a special refugee status "unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) and are retained into federal foster
care. These youths are then eligible for mental health services, education and independent living
assistance. Though many services are available to these youths some are especially important for
reintegration back to society.
Reintegration is essential for these youths to become productive in the future. One way these
programs assist youths have been through intensive mental health services. There have been several
different types such as group and cognitive therapy. Sometimes intense private sessions are
necessary to combat Stockholm syndrome which is when the victim becomes attached or aligned
with the sex trafficker and post–traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) (Hardy, Compton & McPhatter,
2013). Youths must realize the pattern of abuse so

Sociological Dichotomy In Shanghai's Nightlife
A survey of Shanghai's nightlife demonstrates a sociological dichotomy, both in economic and social
hierarchical aspects. In recent decades of progressive economic and social change in China, social
inequality and class division have deepened in the rise of the sex industry, primarily prostitution.
Among the fastest–growing industries in modern China, from the world of electronics to global
exports of technology, prostitution is among China's thriving economic industries. An observant 10–
minute walk through any Chinese city guarantees an encounter of China's active sex trade in some
subtle disguise. Prostitutes in China are employed in even state owned hotels, they walk the streets,
and service in clubs, bars, massage parlors, sauna houses, barber shops, beauty salons, and even
buzzing karaoke buildings.
The presence of prostitution is ubiquitous at every class level of Chinese society, into the luxury
streets of Shanghai and impoverished villages of rural provinces. Yang Fan, a Chinese economist,
estimates 20 million sex workers in business throughout China, accounting for 6% of the country's
gross domestic product (Human Rights Watch). Beyond bearing economic influence, prostitution in
China is a matter of public health, gender inequality, organized crime, poverty, communal inequality,
and shifting societal values. Most significantly, the inner workings of the sex industry in China are
intrinsically linked to the sociological study of social hierarchy and class

Human Trafficking And The Trade Of Human Sex Trafficking...
Between the time periods of 2005 and 2008, 10 countries in the region introduced new anti–
trafficking laws or modified old ones. The United Nations has also picked up the fight against
ending all forms of modern slavery including human sex trafficking. The U.N implemented the a
protocol that focuses on "(1) prevention and combat of trafficking persons, paying particular
attention to women and children; (2) to protect and assist the victims of such trafficking, with full
respect for their human rights; and (3) to promote cooperation among States Parties in order to meet
those objectives." (UN Trafficking Protocol ) Europe, Asia, Africa, the U.N., the United States, and
other nations are fighting and implementing policies to contest to the world's organized crime
networks and combat the trade of human sex trafficking.
The U.S. needs to continue being more proactive concerning human trafficking and the end of
slavery. Some may ask how does human sex trafficking affect the U.S or its foreign policy? Perhaps
others ask if policies are already intact dealing with this issue what more can we do? Well, one of
the most basic but fundamental ways human sex trafficking affects the foundation of this nation and
any U.S foreign policies deals with democracy. This nation was founded on the fundamental beliefs
and constitutional principles of our core democratic values. These core democratic values are what
constitutes the United States and provides a model as a superpower for the world.

The Role Of Dietary And Environmental Factors Affecting...
Dietary and environmental factors play a key role in many aspects of life, whether human or animal.
This paper will discuss the many dietary and environmental factors that affect the sexual selection as
well as sexual dimorphism, specifically in lizards. Sexual selection is a type of natural selection
where one sex does the choosing of mates for the other sex, and members of the same sex are rooted
against each other to compete for mates. In order for a mate to attract a female with a high
reproductive fitness, it is important to do a little showing off, and this is where sexual dimorphism
comes in. Sexual dimorphism is the differences between two sexes of the same species. There are
many ways in which lizards can exhibit sexual dimorphism,

The Sex Trade Should Not Be Overlooked
The economic benefits of the sex trade industry encourage governments to overlook the negative
repercussions and effects. The sex trade is also referred to as "human–trafficking;"The official
definition for this is "the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by
means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception,
of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or

The amount of money made from this harrowing business seems rather quixotic, but this issue goes
on day in and day out. After selling drugs and gun running, trafficking is the third largest business
world–wide (Medina, 2007). The criminal running all these trades are very particular as far as
money goes. The price depends on the person; "once the girls are brought to me by an agent, I must
pay from $350 to $400 for a virgin girl or $170 for a girl who is no longer a virgin" (Flamm 2003).
Criminals place their "workers" in different ensembles; a virgin is far more costly than a girl whom
has been "used." Once a women is purchased for sex, a trafficker can make five to twenty time her
purchase price (Cheung, 2009). These criminals make a lot of money off of this organization of
theirs, but they don't think about the fact that they are turning little girls into hookers. Forced labor
could amount to US $44.3 billion per year, of which US $31.6 billion are made by exploiting
trafficked victims. This confirms that "modern slavery" is a lucrative business, which funds the
expansion of international criminal groups, contributes to corruption, and undermines the rule of law
(Flamm, 2003). This all shows what the world is coming to; men will go out of their way to
denounce women and children for money. The criminals involved in this sick organization should be
put behind bars with no parole. There are reports that many

Pros And Cons Of Prostitution
The prostitution debate in American culture has continued for decades without a response from the
federal government. Some states have drafted initiatives legalizing prostitution to an extent, such as
Nevada, where it is partially decriminalized, and most recently California. Over the course of global
history, many nations have long stood with women in the fight to legalize prostitution. Yet, to
distinguish itself from other nations at the time of its independence, America outlawed prostitution
to preserve Judeo–Christian values. Prostitution poses no health risk to the public at large, and
furthermore, prostitution without regulation often comes with crime, abuse, etc. The federal
government should sponsor health care and security measures for sex workers, as it is their right as
free Americans to pursue work without fear of rape or death. In 1875, U.S. Congress passed the
Page act, which outlawed the importation of women for the sex trade. (Weitzer, 75) At first glance,
this seems like an ethical measure with the end goal of protesting an illegal and unethical sex trade.
However, this was not accomplished, as it instead simply contributed to harsher, more dangerous
climates for sex workers being imported illegally to the country. (Weitzer, 76) Despite the
frightening conditions of the sex trade, prostitution in the West became a lofty ideal for women from
underdeveloped countries, who pursued jobs in America despite low pay and low prestige. (Weitzer,

The Media 's Influence On Contemporary Society
Scholars have debated the media's increasing influence within contemporary society, and shaping of
identities. It has been suggested that the media provides us with limited notions and materials to
brand ourselves, which involve the notion behind being a man or woman and differentiate the means
of bad or good. There are various prominent mediums used by the media to convey or direct a
message. Images from media arbitrated precepts tend to become the conception of the individual's
self. Vigorito and Curry (1998, p. 136) indicate that pop culture is increasingly visual and images
seen in the media tend to convey the ideal cultural norms, values and gender relations. These images
are not subtle, but explicit notions of what is acceptable in society and how we as individuals should
look and think in the public eye. In the twenty–first century, gender equality has been held in high
regard both in the macro and micro levels of social and professional contexts. Gender is defined by
the features society expects from a male or female depending on their biological sex. According to
multiple scholars, research on masculinity and male depiction has become a major focus due to
gender becoming a social construct subject to historical change. In the following study I wish to
determine how the ideal male and masculinity is understood and defined, how the male identity and
masculinity is portrayed in film, computer games and advertising, and how these representations
have changed over time.

The Objectification of Women in Advertisements Essay
The objectification of women is a huge issue in society and is often led by advertising. However
many men still believe that the adverts depicting women in a sexual and often passive posture are
not very offensive but rather very funny or sexy. However how would they feel if it were their
daughter or sister being advertised throughout the world as a sex object?
The Tiger Beer advertisement shown in the appendix is a clear example of the objectification of
women in advertising. The Tiger Beer advert was made to appeal to men from the age of 20 to 60.

Another problem is the first place award associated with the beer and the third place award placed
next to the woman. Also the copy is somewhat offensive as it clearly implies that the best things to
come out of the 'Far East' are prostitutes and beer.
The problem with the woman's stance and sexual nature is that she is viewed merely as an object
that must compete with beer for male attention. This stereotype is repeatedly used in several ads
where it is expected that the woman should be competing to pleasure the man like beer does. It uses
the stereotype of the man who simply must be pleased all day long by beer, women, footy, and fast
cars. This stereotype has also appeared in the BMW ad featured in the appendix which shows a
woman having sex with a man while the man thinks about the new car he saw in a magazine. This
ad also shows the man as someone whose attention must constantly be satisfied with beer, women,
footy or cars and each of these elements must compete for his attention whether it's an inanimate
object or a woman.
The advert makes a joke about the sex industry in Asia clearly implying that Asian prostitutes are an
object designed to give men immediate pleasure. The ad puts beer and prostitutes into the same
category of things required to please a man. The fact that women are lower than beer in this category
appeals to the stereotypical moron who thinks the most important things in life

masks in the first place, but the first documentation was in the 13th century a document banning
men in masks to throw eggshells full of rose water to women on the street, the same document also

The Ethical Debate On Prostitution
The ethical debate regarding the numerous views on prostitution dates back numerous decades.
Prostitution is seen by many as the absolute embodiment of patriarchal male privilege, clearly
disallowing feminist support or participation (Kesler, 2002, p. 219). However, views vary widely
when assessing different studies such as those that measure the possible harm risks inflected on
women working in the field. There are two main opposing views on this subject matter, the liberal
and the feminist. Those who view prostitution according to a liberal paradigm embrace the view that
prostitution, in its "ideal" form, must be viewed as a voluntary contract (Peterson–Iyer, 1998, p. 25).
On the other hand, as Alison Jaggar points out, a liberal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The overall moral of her article is to sustain the raising of awareness regarding probable physical,
emotional or psychological harm in which prostitutes continue to experience. Also, she attempts to
find a middle ground in which feminists may still speak up without neglecting the real needs of
modern day prostitutes. It is important, however, to acknowledge the existing social divide between
feminists and prostitutes. Rebecca Whisnant and Christine Stark (2004) challenge this perception
through identifying the divide in which we assume that whoever we are, the prostitute is not (p.
296). I will proceed by discussing the liberal views debated in this article.
Peterson–Iyer claims that the most common approach taken by prostitutes' organizations is to view
prostitution as a matter of individual free choice (p. 24). Furthermore, they emphasize the essential
autonomy of the prostitute and the client: they are two adult persons who agree to a mutually
beneficial arrangement (p. 26). However, these arrangements could deter in some unfortunate cases
such as dishonest police, intrusive laws, or customers who fail to hold up one end of the bargain (p.
26). As well, it is common for prostitutes to experience physical and emotional abuse from their
clients, pimps and the police. These occurrences correlate to the experiences upheld by those who

Sex in the City-the Roman Empire
Sex in the times of the Roman Empire was much less taboo than it is in today's society. If you could

emperors. Although many of the Roman Emperors were perverse you only have to look at the first

One of the first things that Tiberius did when he came in to power was to reverse the laws that
Augustus put in to place trying to protect the morality of Rome. Tiberius spent very little time in
Rome during his reign as Emperor and retired to the country to spend the last eleven years of his
life. While living in the country Tiberius set new standards of debauchery, going as far as creating a
new government office "for the originating of unfamiliar carnal pleasures (Cawthorne 67)." Also at
his villa in the country Tiberius housed young boys and girls to peform sexual acts in front of him to
arouse his wanning sex drive. The historian Suetonius lays several scandolus allegations at the feet
of Tiberius including raping two young boys at a sacrifice. It is said that when the two boys objected
to the way Tiberius treated them that he had their legs broken. It is also said that Tiberius was awful.
When one woman showed that she did not want to do what he told her to, Tiberius had informers lay
false accusations against her and then showed at her trial shouting "Are you sorry now (68)?"
Luckily for Rome, Tiberius accomplished very little in his time as Emperor and spent the majority
of his time in isolation. Unfortunatly for Rome the man that would become Tiberius' heir would be
much worse. Born Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, Caligula got his nickname meaning "little
boots" from the miniature army boots he wore as a child. After his parents and two

Why Are Trade Offs Among Life History Traits So Commonly...
. Why are trade–offs among life history traits so commonly observed? Life history traits are an
organism's age of maturity, parity, fecundity, and longevity. An organism might live in an
environment where the availability of water is low, then an organism has to lose some characters
(such as some energy allocate to growth) to give to gain another character (such as the ability to
retain water in its body) in order to survive during its' lifetime. Trade–offs among life history traits
are commonly observed because the tradeoff character that are dominant pass down to their
offspring and it is commonly observed so they can be adapted at the conditions they are living in. 2.
Why would organisms with low annual survival rates begin to reproduce at an early age? Organisms
with low annual survival rates begin to reproduce at an early age because they could be outgrown by
larger competitors due to their short lifespan. Therefore in order to disperse their seeds/progeny to
other locations they must reproduce quickly. Another reason is to some small organisms must
mature and reproduce early because it is advantageous to having some of progeny survive before an
organism die. Benefit of increase in fecundity at that age and costs may be reduced survival and
fecundity at older ages. In addition, at an earlier age, an organism can result in having more number
of offspring over their lifetime which is favored by Natural selection. 3. Explain why organisms face
a fundamental trade–off

How Gender Role Impacts on Identity Essay
When contemplating the topic of gender role and its impact on identity one cannot help but realise
that these gender roles have a huge part to play on a person's identity. As gender is a combination of
male and female it gives way for a number of characteristics to accompany each sex making them
different from each other. This has an important position to play on identity which Kath Woodward
stated in her book "Questioning Identity: Gender, Class, Nation" where she said "Without difference
there would not be such thing as identity". (Woodward, 2000, pp.51) Unfortunately, however, with
these differences there are inequalities. In this essay I would like to elaborate on this further by
looking at the meaning of gender and how it impacts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gender can be described as "the social attributes associated with being a woman or a man in a
particular society" (Woodward, 2000, pp.47) A person's gender is then determined by their sex
which is "a biological classification". (Woodward, 2000, pp.47) As gender is a social attribute the
identities of people of different genders vary from society to society. For example, in many
religions, women do not have place in the rituals of the religion as it is simply only for men to do.
(Chryssides and Geaves, 2013, pp.331) As religions were formed in certain cultures this shows a
clear divide caused by gender roles based on the cultural origin of the religion but also shows that
this has an impact on the identities of the male and female members of the religion. This being that
the males feel they have more authority over the females of the religion. A lot of inequality among
the sexes is simply based on stereotypes. Stereotypes can be explained as "one–sided and
exaggerated images of men and women which are deployed repeatedly in everyday life". (Scott and
Marshal, 2009, pp. 279) A great example of stereotypical sexist views is portrayed in the humours
video of the character Ali G who interviewed a lady about her views on feminism. In this video he
seems to be making fun of some sexist notions such as the idea of people being uncomfortable about
flying in a plane piloted by a female

Pimps tend to choose their targets wisely by taking advantage of their social and economical
disadvantages. According to the article Sex Trafficking of Women and Girls, "typically, the countries
from which many of the victims originate have unstable political climates and are economically
disadvantaged" (Deshpande and Nour). Victims are taken away from their families and loved ones,
isolated in a foreign country, and unable to speak the language they need in order to ask for help.
Traffickers are highly skilled profiteers who use a variety of tactics to trap their victims. They give
their girls false promises such as education opportunities, job opportunities, and false marriages in
order to obtain American citizenship. They also use a tactic known as "debt bondage" where they
expect their victims to provide personal or sexual services to pay a portion of their debt (Deshpande

the only ones who care about their victims and provide them with their basic needs such as food and
shelter in order to gain their devoted loyalty. Sacharay– which is how she wants to be known– is a

Should Prostitution Be Legal? Essay
Prostitution has existed in history since before most people can remember. In our time, prostitution
is hotly debated as to whether it should be a professional working job, or whether it is immoral and
oppressive to women. This debate has existed since the dawn of time, and there is still no clear
answer. Society demands that police should stop certain illicit activities from happening in their
neighborhoods, but should law enforcement be made to waste their time and effort to arrest those
that may or may not be prostitutes? While some believe legalizing prostitution will only encourage
more people to buy sex, making prostitution legal will protect those who work in the sex industry.
The earliest mentions of prostitution date all the way back to the B.C. era. The Sumerian Records
(2400 B.C.) and Hammurabi's code (1780 B.C.) list female prostitution as one of the earliest
professions and even include certain codes that outline a prostitute's rights ("Historical Timeline")
Only during the middle ages did prostitution begin to be regulated, criminalized, and even abolished
in some places. In 1910, the Mann Act, or White–Slave Traffic Act, created a federal United States
law against "prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose." Call Off Your Old Tired
Ethics (a.k.a. COYOTE) was the first prostitute's rights group in the U.S., formed in 1973.

Male Biased ASR Essay
The ASR, for example, is population–specific but its effects underscore the pervasive and recurring
issue of sexual conflict. In Rossmanith (2006), male–biased ASR was correlated with increased
occurrence of polyandry in the lesser spotted woodpecker (Picoides minor). In song sparrows
(Melospiza melodia), males were monogamous at times when there was an excess of males, but
were inclined to polygyny with the materialization of female–biased ASR. Liker (2014) summarized
that polygamy by males is much more frequent with female–biased ASR than with male–biased

As a result, avian species with reversed sex roles and duties offer a unique avenue for examining the
relationship between sex ratios, mating systems, and parental investment. Species with female–
biased ASR demonstrate conventional sex roles while those with male–biased ASR exhibit reversed
sex roles. In the northern flicker (Colaptes auratus), a migratory woodpecker which exhibits a
culture of partially reversed sex roles, males have been found to care for a greater period of time
than females. In a study by Gow and Wiebe (2014), males cared for 16 days on average while
females cared for their offspring for an average of 12. In total, one–third of females abandoned the
brood before fledgling independence, whereas no males left their young. Provision and feeding rates
were found to be highly correlated; in addition to age, feeding rates increased with length of care.
The social context, as reflected in the ASR, clearly results in sex–specific differences in the form of

Women's Sex Trade For Women
Thai women are not always lured into the sex trade for reasons that are associated with force or
kidnappings. Thai women look at the potential that the sex industry could provide; women seek for
the potential to make enough money to support their families and expunge their debts. It is therefore
an appealing occupation where women can make a median monthly income from sex work ranging
from 5,825 to 7,950 baht. By this, it is important to compare a typical Thai salary of a decent
occupation such as a chef or construction worker, in which earnings are around 6,000 baht per
month. In many cases, "women might end up as prostitutes because their parents had to sell them
into slavery or because their impoverished husbands might so use them. By the middle of the second
millennium B.C., prostitution was well established as a likely occupation for the daughters of the
poor" (atd. In Parrot and Cummings 6). The women who are targeted as best candidates for the illicit
trade are driven by the need for work. Victims seek occupations and fall in the hands of recruiters
who sell them lies, and or at times the parties force them to become a personal slave. For example,
victims like Rei from Thailand knew that she would have to be a prostitute in terms of an appealing
salary. Rei grew up in southern Thailand and had a hard time obtaining a job after completing
twelfth grade. She heard many women who were going to work in Japan; she also knew of agents in

Should Prostitution Be Legal?
These two stories are very sad and difficult to read. Prostitution is illegal in most countries and
where it is illegal it is considered a back–alley business. It can be a dirty and dangerous act, but it
can be fixed. Prostitution should be legal, because it may be able to help society. If prostitution was
legal, the act could be cleaner than most people think it could ever be. It could be a new job for
unemployed people, so it could bring down unemployment. Crime rates could go down and some
poor people could start gaining money. A nation can also gain money from taxes.

Christianity is a monotheistic religion and they believe in only one marriage and no sex before
marriage. Later in the twentieth century, the United States attempted to regulate prostitution. In
1910, the Mann Act or the White–Slave Traffic Act was passed, making prostitution for any immoral
purpose a federal crime. As history moved on, more countries started to view prostitution negatively.
(Sexton and Cushman.) The reason why prostitution became more morally wrong may all be
because of religion. Though many countries disapproved prostitution some kept it legal. In 1946,
France kept the act of prostitution itself legal, though solicitation and running a brothel was
criminalized. England legalized prostitution in 1959, and in 1971 the state of Nevada regulated
prostitution, allowing rural counties to license brothels. Prostitution has been legal in Canada since
well before World War II and remains so, though prohibitions remain against street prostitution and
pimping. Not withstanding these laws, some provinces, notably British Columbia, have elected to
regulate and license escorts and escort agencies. (Sexton and Cushman.) Today, prostitution still
exists everywhere even if it is illegal in the country. There is at least 13.8 million prostitutes in the
world and over $186 billion is spent worldwide. For example of some countries, in China it is illegal
and there are five million prostitutes and $73 billion is spent there. In the United States where it is

Tearoom Trade: Impersonal Sex in Public Places
Laud Humphreys' book "Tearoom Trade: Impersonal Sex in Public Places" was originally published
in 1970. Humphreys earned his PhD from Washington University in St. Louis, although several
faculty members tried to rescind it due to his research methods that were perceived to be
"dishonest". His book details the activities of homosexual men who regularly visit public restrooms
(tearooms) to find quick anonymous sex. Since Laud Humphreys was a sociologist, he recognized
the simplistic stereotypes that the society had on impersonal homoerotic activity. The sociologist
thus noted that it would be of considerable social significance for the society to appreciate the
motives and patterns of this deviant activity. His study findings unearthed ... Show more content on

In the initial stages of his research, Humphreys noted that deviants, especially patrons of public
restrooms were often threatened by outsiders such as the police and violent youth, meaning that they
had to be kept anonymous. In order to fit in, Humphreys pretended to be gay. Therefore, he became
a "watchqueen", in order to observe the sexual behaviour patterns in the tearooms. The author
further adds that he was able to establish some form of rapport with informants who helped him
with the research. The first part of the research was observation of the sexual acts as the author
posed as a watchqueen, while other partners mostly performed oral sex. Humphreys notes that this
form of sex was common because it took relatively less time in a small space compared to other
forms of sex. This also eliminated the likelihood of being "caught in the act." Humphreys then noted
50 oral sex encounters in his observation sheet. The tearoom sex also included 53 sexual acts. He
compared this record with that of 30 subjects that was observed by a cooperating respondent. The
cooperating respondent was also a sexual participant thus the total time–and–place representative
sample of participants was 134. Humphrey incorporated sample attrition due to change of address,
the two men who engaged in anal sex and those who drove rental cars. Therefore, 100 men was the
final sample size that was used in the research study. In the second part of his research, Humphreys

The Tearoom Trade
Review: The Tearoom Trade – Impersonal Sex in Public Places

Humphreys, L. (1970). Tearoom Trade: Impersonal Sex in Public Places. Aldine Publishing

Tearoom Trade: the use of a public restroom as a place where men of all varieties go to engage in
homosexual activity. By engaging in such activity they must accept costs and risks of this behaviour,
however will receive a significant reward. As explained in Humphreys book, men involved in the
tearoom game, use these facilities because of the social process that is structured to allow him to
have a sexual encounter without any outside personal involvement with other participants. With the
many rules in Tearooms, men find them much more attractive as it provides a certain protection
against his social image, as this type of behaviour can be seen as very inappropriate and rather
illegal. The Tearoom Trade as a sexual deviant activity.
Laud Humphreys, a sociologist, was dissatisfied with the idea of producing a study so mundane that
only focuses on individuals who engage in deviant activity but nothing about how they participate in
the deviant world. Humphreys found that the idea of deviant behaviour explored in terms of
sociology explains it as organised behaviour that is important to the individuals that engage in the
activity, yet not seen as a subculture. Therefore, Humphreys sets out to analyse the personal
significance of the Tearoom Trade to the participant. And this is the foundation of

Prostitution In Brazil Essay
If prostitution is legal in Brazil, why is prostitution legal if brothels are going to be illegal to
operate? Even though prostitution is legal in Brazil, it is illegal to operate or to employ prostitutes in
any other way. This is a big issue because there are still brothels that operate secretly in Brazil, but if
the Brazilian government's legalized brothels, they would help the Brazilian economy by they can
help lead to a chain effect that would significantly benefit Brazil's economy, primarily through tax
revenue which will bring in a lot of money for the government. More criminal activity is occurring
while these brothels main to be illegal. Many people would argue that legalizing a brothel would just
be a gift to pimps, traffickers, and the sex industry. If the brothels are government owned and run by
a person they would have to be guidelines and policies that the government has portrayed to them.

Sex Trafficking Is The Trade Of Humans Essay
Sex Trafficking Sex trafficking is the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of sexual
slavery, forced labor, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others. This may
encompass providing a spouse in the context of forced marriage, or the extraction of organs or
tissues, including for surrogacy and ova removal.Sex trafficking is a very dangerous thing to be
going on in this world. Human trafficking can occur within a country or trans–nationally. The
Metro–Atlanta area ranks number one in sex trafficking.
HOW IT STARTED
Although human trafficking is being carried on from ancient times, there is very little information
on when did it start. So, when did human trafficking start? There is a mixed response to it. Some
people believe that human trafficking actually started in the 1700s when small children were
exploited for work. Debates raged for years among feminists about "free" and "forced" prostitution,
and whether or not all prostitution should be included in the definition of sex trafficking. Sex
trafficking is horrible. Many people believe that prostitution is apart of sex trafficking, it could be in
a way, but also it is not. Prostitution the women are willingly selling their bodies and on the other
hand sex trafficking the women are being kidnapped or tricked into thinking they will be in a better

The prostitution trade succeeded and became quite popular essentially around brothels which were

there is a sixty percent of young women in the sex trade were Aboriginal youth and on average of

when employment for women was at the minimum level, but then their war a big decrease greatly
during World War II, this was mainly from the greater opportunities for women in the industries that

The Sex Trade: Slavery and Prostitution Essay
Individuals around the world are faced with inhumane treatments and conditions daily. "Traffickers
use force, fraud or coercion, including techniques such as containment, beatings, rape, confiscation

common sex trade area is "Southeast Asia, [it] is one of the world's largest exporters of sex slavery

to end sex slavery but lack support and funding. Once slaves are no longer in use/useful to the
traffickers they are freed. Upon being freed majority of individuals are emotionally and physically

The Sex Trade Still Exists
No one said life would be easy. Every day is filled with trials and tribulations which must be
overcome to get to the next. What we face here in the United States is, as we see it, extreme. We see
homeless people, families struggling to get by, stock market failing, gas prices rising,
unemployment going up, and much more. But elsewhere, their struggles are different. Their
obstacles in life are more challenging than our measly problems in this first world country. The sex
trade still exists, slavery among women and children, trafficking of girls and drugs, and so much
more. From the book Sold by Patricia McCormick comes a story about a girl named Lakshmi and
her struggles from the mountains of Nepal carried to Happiness House where she was sold into the
sex trade, and through it all is able to learn that, " simply to endure, is to triumph" (16). Lakshmi
grew up a poor mountain girl in a village in Nepal. From an early age she was willing to do
whatever it took to get a tin roof for her family. "Let me go to the city. I can work for a rich
family...and send my wages home to you" (1). Having a tin roof in their village meant they had some
money and they would be safe and dry form the rain. However, Lakshmi's stepfather gambled away
everything he owned and eventually even Lakshmi. Lakshmi lived and learned in a Patriarchal

It will also define the fairy tale and nonsense literature. In this section, what previous researchers had explored about the characters and the red garments they worn will be illustrated as well. The objects' meaning is another main focus. Therefore, the explanation of how material culture and narrative analysis helps when studying the representation of objects. • 3. The Global Sex Trade And Its Victims: Documentary Analysis Sex Trade – The Global Sex Trade and its Victims is a documentary that explores the exploitation of women in the sex trafficking industry. It is an underground business that is existent in every country, contrary to common belief. The film primarily focuses on young women that were once victims of human trafficking. As described in the film, victims are often lured with promises of work and a steady income. Traffickers will take out advertisements in the newspapers looking for domestic workers, dancers, or models abroad. Victims are typically from poverty–stricken areas, and despite the initial apprehension will accept positions abroad out of desperation. Perpetrators of sex trafficking have the process of persuasion and enticement down ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Trauma theory provides insight on perpetrator's ability to control their victims. Traffickers understand the element of captivity in complete subordination. Victims must have the feeling of helplessness in their situation, escape is not a viable option. As described in Herman, the process of destroying attachments requires isolation and destruction of connection with others (Herman, 2015). Traffickers isolate their victims by placing bars over windows and locking them inside. Eventually, victims are so accustomed to entrapment that they will not escape, even if there is an opportunity. The destruction of connection occurs when victims experience assault and violence at the hands of their "clients" and the lack of intervention on their behalf. They learn to trust no one to ensure their survival; dependence on others will only result in loss. Total surrender is an inevitable consequence for trafficking. Victims submit to their circumstances because that is their new reality. In a situation of complete bondage, a victim only has control left over her emotions; their physical self is completely controlled. It seems a bit counterintuitive, but, perhaps by shutting down emotionally, victims are in a way controlling the one thing that they still ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Legalization Regulation Of The Sex Trade Essay This paper argues for the decriminalization plus regulation of the sex trade. This paper will defend the position that activities associated with adult prostitution (advertising, buying, soliciting, living off the avails and keeping a bawdy house) should be decriminalized/ legalized due to: a) the capacity for criminalization to infringe on sex worker's fundamental rights to life, liberty, and security and b) the capacity for criminalization to prohibit sex worker's from actively preventing harm to oneself. Philosophical support for this position will come from arguments rooted in human rights' perspective, John Stuart Mill's "harm principle" and arguments rooted in feminist theory. The harm principle contends "it is only justifiable to interfere with the autonomy or liberty of adults in order to prevent harm (physical harm & deprivation of rights and liberties) occurring to other persons". Whereas feminist theory consists of a view rooted in gender equality rights and social justice. This paper will discuss and respond to criticisms and objections rooted in legal moralism, and welfare paternalism that support the criminalization of prostitution. Furthermore, this paper will draw upon arguments from Prostitution Reference, and Supreme Court of Canada's Bedford Case; where judges and litigants interpreted criminalization of activities related prostitution within the context of (s.213) communication, (s. 210) keeping a bawdyhouse, and (s.212) living off the avails. ... • 7. Essay on Gender Inequalities: Improving or Deteriorating? To distinguish the extent to which social divisions in gender between male and females are socially constructed we first have to discuss the issue of stratification by gender (inequality) and the theories which surround it. This essay will distinguish the concepts of gender inequalities in unpaid labour and employment, the media, as well as briefly looking into violence. Through discussing each of these concepts, we can compare the historical context of gender to the present day to see if things have socially improved or deteriorated. Before looking into the concepts of gender inequalities, we must first explore gender itself which is the division into two groups – men and women. 'Society shows us that gender is a system that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You could apply Feinberg's theory to this as back then it was just accepted and seen as the way of life for men and women. It was found in a 2006 study that on average 'women spent 180 minutes per day on housework; that's 78% more time than men who spent only 101 minutes per day.' (Lader, D 2006) This reveals that even in current society women are still accepted to partake in unpaid labour through housework rather than be in employment and this reflects the past in the United Kingdom. This unpaid labour connects to employment rates in the second quarter of 2008 in the UK as the employment rate was 79 per cent for men and 70 per cent for women which has remained unchanged since 1999. (Office of National Statistics, 2008). It has to be said that in recent times, the division between males and females is less evident but inclination towards male dominance in employment is still shown. Today, this gender inequality is accepted in society which reveals a strong unfairness against women in employment. In 2006, it was reported that the gender pay gap in the UK is one of the highest in Europe: women who work full–time earned 17% less per hour than men and women working part–time earned 39% less per hour than men working full–time. (Office of National Statistics, 2008). However, women's place in society and in employment has improved greatly since the Equal Pay Act of 1970. Over the years, there has been an ... • 9. Prostitution As A Form Of Sexual Abuse Prostitution can have the meaning of, "engaging in sexual acts or activities for the exchange of money or goods", this can also be a form of sexual abuse. Prostitution status for the countries shown for the " number of countries prostitution is illegal: 109, number of countries prostitution is restricted: 11, number of countries prostitution is legal: 77, number of countries with no laws for prostitution: 5." Prostitution is illegal in all states in the US except for 11 counties in Nevada. The Mann Act signed by President Taft on June 25, 1910. The purpose for this law was to stop harboring immigrant prostitutes, forced prostitution and transportation across state lines. A Representative that's named James R. Mann was how the law got its name, this act had dealings with child pornography and prostitution. Mann came across this law because in Chicago 1909 people told him that pimps were forcing girls and women into prostitution. In the US arguing for keeping sexual rights and privacy won out in the landmark Supreme Court ruling Lawrence v. Texas stating that these sodomy laws consider constitutional law of a country nor the government. Sex trade still continues, in 2007 Atlanta's sex trade was worth $290 million. Pimps usually come with history, like being a pimp was a family business because there was a lot of their family member involved into that before. It's pasted from generation to generation usually. • 11. Commodity In The Music Industry Commodity is a word that is becoming increasingly associated with the music industry, as women are pressured to put out a sexual image. Commodification in the music industry and society has been present for many years. However this ubiquitous injustice has only been highlighted more recently, due to more people speaking out about how wrong it is. I have chosen to write about this topic as I believe is it relevant to today's society of gender equality. My topic explores all the ideas surrounding my hypothesis of "To what extent has the Female body been commodified in the music industry, from the 1970's to present day?" Through the use of a questionnaire, my research and history timeline, I aim to link the environment of the music industry to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clark (2000) "Women, Gender, and Religion," talks about how the Ancient Greeks believe men and women were two different species. Men are the superior and women are the inferior. Clark says {"Greek medical writers differ in their ideas about male and female bodies. The Hippocratic school presented men and women as separate species (what we might call a "two sex" model),' whereas Aristotle considered women to be, 'Imperfect or defective men in what has been termed a 'one sex' model. Women lacked the firm control of bodily boundaries that men had. Women changed shape during pregnancy, and they leaked: blood, tears, and emotion. 'Since woman does not bound herself, she must be bounded.' This is achieved by organization of her space, prescription of her gestures, ordering of her rituals, imposition of headgear, attendants, and other trappings."} This describes women as a completely different and weak species, which have no control over who they are. They are fragmented beings. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, believed that the way to "bound" the female species was by trapping ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Global Sex Trade And Women As The Supplier Essay The Global Sex Trade and Women as the Supplier Introduction Women involved or forced into sex work (prostitution) are striped of dignity and self–worth they come from poverty, migration and cultural backgrounds that face gender inequality (Bhat & Pushpam, 2013, p. 3). Forced prostitution is a global problem but is more prevalent in poorer countries (True, 2013). Victims of prostitution affect women and children of all ages (Bhat & Pushpam, 2013, p. 3). The sex industry thrives making billions of dollars and is funded by investors, crooked recruiters, and even corrupt government employees (Bhat & Pushpam, 2013, p. 3). Females involved in the sex trade face inhuman treatment they are raped, demoralized, defeated and will never live a normal life again (Bhat & Pushpam, 2013, p. 3). Many women will migrate across borders in search for economic stability but instead will be coerced into sex work (Wonders & Danner, 2002). Women in poorer countries with low social class face gender inequalities mainly because of cultural and political misguidance. Strategies that can help prevent women from forced prostitution and sex work include higher pay, a support system for women to get an education, and government reforms to help prevent migration and the people that keep the industry thriving. Effects of Poverty on Women Sex workers can exist anywhere but are primarily more prevalent in poorer countries and women and children who participate or who are forced into sex work do so ... • 15. Relationship Between Leaf Size And Annual Sex Expression Relationship between leaf size and annual sex expression in Arisaema triphyllum VICKY NGUYEN University of Toronto, Scarborough Summary Disparity in cost of reproduction has lead sexually reproducing plants to develop different methods of dealing with the cost of reproduction, an example of this is sequential hermaphroditism, where an individual can change sex at one point in their life. Jack in the pulpit, Arisaema triphyllum, is a sexually dimorphic plant that exhibits sequential hermaphroditism, this study looks to see if female A. triphyllum will exhibit the largest leaf sizes due to their need to meet higher costs of reproduction. Forty individuals were surveyed for sex and largest leaf length per area for 7 different locations within Morningside ravine. Individuals were analyzed for mean leaf length per sex, and means were analyzed for significance with a 1–way ANOVA followed by a tukey test. All means were found to be significantly different from each other with the mean of females leaves the largest, followed by males, and asexual individuals were the smallest. Female individuals of A. triphyllum had the largest leaf sizes to compensate for their elevated costs of reproduction. The size advantage model explains that that female A. triphyllum will have the largest leaves because female individuals are able to best meet the costs of reproduction at larger sizes. The Body Politic: The Removal of Agency and the Struggle for Power The demand for sexual services is a universal constant in human society–from the sexual slavery of the Indo–Asian colonial period, to contemporary Canada, the relation between sex and power is an undisputed fact. Prostitutes and concubines are and were people who struggled with power historically due to their positions in society and their occupations; they have struggled for political access, for their own safety, and for their freedom. By contrasting modern prostitution with concubinage in colonial Asia, I will show how systems of justice operate in sexist and racist policies in order to regulate and restrict the agency of sex workers and concubines. From the destruction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By not creating laws–and by outlawing practices which made prostitution safer for sex workers, such as bawdy houses–the Canadian government presented the identity of the sex worker as being of low worth and ultimately increased their vulnerability. In her examination of colonial concubines in Asia, Stoler explored what the role of concubine entailed for colonized women: such as being "guides to the language and mysteries of the foreign society" (116) for the European men. They were to treat their illnesses, and essentially meant to "[keep] them alive" (116). By constructing concubines as tools instead of people–to be used for medicine, socialization, sexual services, and whatever else the man needed–the colonizers depersonalized the indigenous women they so clearly required. They were in high demand–places with uneven sex ratios, such as North Sumatra, had "intense competition" for women, sometimes resulting in assaults (220)–and yet completely disregarded by the state as people with inner lives, friendships, families, and interests. In the context of the colonial period, which was based on hierarchies of race and superiority, it isn 't surprising that the colonizers would proliferate this view of the indigenous women. • 19. Becoming Transgender In The United States n these past few years we have seen a great deal of change in the United States. From the legalization of gay marriage, and or the legalization of marijuana. These are things that people in the past would think are things that should not be legalized but times change. Lately, many people not in conform with their biological gender have been becoming the opposite sex, a transgender. Some of the most recent well known cases of becoming transgender have to be Bruce Jenner and Rodrigo Heng song of republican senator, Ileana Ros–Lehtinen. All this talk brings up the question of whether sex is a psychological thing, or an anatomical thing. I believe that sex is an anatomical thing and I also believe that becoming transgender can bring negative effects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I can say this from experience because I have seen transgender people at stores, and all they do is stare at me. It gets to the point where I just want to leave because they make me so uncomfortable. I recall going to ,my locker about a month ago with my friend during fifth period. As we were going back to our classroom, a girl walks by and naturally a teenage boy will look at her body. I told my friend, "she is kind of hot", to which he replied, "you do know she is transgender?" I was pretty much socked and was really condues. Now I have no problem with her but what she did was uncomfortable. As she passed between us, she was lifting her shirt and touching her but. I was uncomfortable because I tend to see women as people who are respectful and don't do that kind of stuff. The girl did = not show any private parts but she did make me uncomfortable. This brings me to the article, when a lawsuit in Minnesota was placed. The transgender which is labeled, "Student X", was lifting her clothes and asking to trade body parts. Obviously this would make her peers uncomfortable. What makes it all the ,most weird, is that people consider what this girl did as something all girls do. While some girls may dance inappropriately, I am almost positive girls don't talk about trading body ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nonetheless, this epidemic in reality has been in the United States for some time. The United States has become tolerable because of the amount of money the sex business industry brings in annually. The youths trapped in prostitution, brothel, massage services has been on the upsurge due to a lack of assistance. Lack of acknowledgment by the government and the media has been astounding. States such as New York, Georgia and Florida have established special programs for youths and young women that are victims of both domestic and foreign sex trafficking. However, many also receive some type of life skills training and assistance with employment through legitimate employers. Foreign youths often receive a special refugee status "unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) and are retained into federal foster care. These youths are then eligible for mental health services, education and independent living assistance. Though many services are available to these youths some are especially important for reintegration back to society. Reintegration is essential for these youths to become productive in the future. One way these programs assist youths have been through intensive mental health services. There have been several different types such as group and cognitive therapy. Sometimes intense private sessions are necessary to combat Stockholm syndrome which is when the victim becomes attached or aligned with the sex trafficker and post–traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) (Hardy, Compton & McPhatter, 2013). • 23. Sociological Dichotomy In Shanghai's Nightlife A survey of Shanghai's nightlife demonstrates a sociological dichotomy, both in economic and social hierarchical aspects. In recent decades of progressive economic and social change in China, social inequality and class division have deepened in the rise of the sex industry, primarily prostitution. Among the fastest–growing industries in modern China, from the world of electronics to global exports of technology, prostitution is among China's thriving economic industries. An observant 10– minute walk through any Chinese city guarantees an encounter of China's active sex trade in some subtle disguise. Prostitutes in China are employed in even state owned hotels, they walk the streets, and service in clubs, bars, massage parlors, sauna houses, barber shops, beauty salons, and even buzzing karaoke buildings. The presence of prostitution is ubiquitous at every class level of Chinese society, into the luxury streets of Shanghai and impoverished villages of rural provinces. Yang Fan, a Chinese economist, estimates 20 million sex workers in business throughout China, accounting for 6% of the country's gross domestic product (Human Rights Watch). Beyond bearing economic influence, prostitution in China is a matter of public health, gender inequality, organized crime, poverty, communal inequality, and shifting societal values. Most significantly, the inner workings of the sex industry in China are intrinsically linked to the sociological study of social hierarchy and class ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United Nations has also picked up the fight against ending all forms of modern slavery including human sex trafficking. The U.N implemented the a protocol that focuses on "(1) prevention and combat of trafficking persons, paying particular attention to women and children; (2) to protect and assist the victims of such trafficking, with full respect for their human rights; and (3) to promote cooperation among States Parties in order to meet those objectives." (UN Trafficking Protocol ) Europe, Asia, Africa, the U.N., the United States, and other nations are fighting and implementing policies to contest to the world's organized crime networks and combat the trade of human sex trafficking. The U.S. needs to continue being more proactive concerning human trafficking and the end of slavery. Some may ask how does human sex trafficking affect the U.S or its foreign policy? Perhaps others ask if policies are already intact dealing with this issue what more can we do? Well, one of the most basic but fundamental ways human sex trafficking affects the foundation of this nation and any U.S foreign policies deals with democracy. This nation was founded on the fundamental beliefs and constitutional principles of our core democratic values. This paper will discuss the many dietary and environmental factors that affect the sexual selection as well as sexual dimorphism, specifically in lizards. Sexual selection is a type of natural selection where one sex does the choosing of mates for the other sex, and members of the same sex are rooted against each other to compete for mates. In order for a mate to attract a female with a high reproductive fitness, it is important to do a little showing off, and this is where sexual dimorphism comes in. The amount of money made from this harrowing business seems rather quixotic, but this issue goes on day in and day out. After selling drugs and gun running, trafficking is the third largest business world–wide (Medina, 2007). The criminal running all these trades are very particular as far as money goes. The price depends on the person; "once the girls are brought to me by an agent, I must pay from $350 to $400 for a virgin girl or $170 for a girl who is no longer a virgin" (Flamm 2003). Criminals place their "workers" in different ensembles; a virgin is far more costly than a girl whom has been "used." Once a women is purchased for sex, a trafficker can make five to twenty time her purchase price (Cheung, 2009). These criminals make a lot of money off of this organization of theirs, but they don't think about the fact that they are turning little girls into hookers. Forced labor could amount to US $44.3 billion per year, of which US $31.6 billion are made by exploiting trafficked victims. This confirms that "modern slavery" is a lucrative business, which funds the expansion of international criminal groups, contributes to corruption, and undermines the rule of law (Flamm, 2003). • 31. Pros And Cons Of Prostitution The prostitution debate in American culture has continued for decades without a response from the federal government. Some states have drafted initiatives legalizing prostitution to an extent, such as Nevada, where it is partially decriminalized, and most recently California. Over the course of global history, many nations have long stood with women in the fight to legalize prostitution. Yet, to distinguish itself from other nations at the time of its independence, America outlawed prostitution to preserve Judeo–Christian values. Prostitution poses no health risk to the public at large, and furthermore, prostitution without regulation often comes with crime, abuse, etc. The federal government should sponsor health care and security measures for sex workers, as it is their right as free Americans to pursue work without fear of rape or death. In 1875, U.S. Congress passed the Page act, which outlawed the importation of women for the sex trade. (Weitzer, 75) At first glance, this seems like an ethical measure with the end goal of protesting an illegal and unethical sex trade. However, this was not accomplished, as it instead simply contributed to harsher, more dangerous climates for sex workers being imported illegally to the country. (Weitzer, 76) Despite the frightening conditions of the sex trade, prostitution in the West became a lofty ideal for women from underdeveloped countries, who pursued jobs in America despite low pay and low prestige. • 33. The Media 's Influence On Contemporary Society Scholars have debated the media's increasing influence within contemporary society, and shaping of identities. It has been suggested that the media provides us with limited notions and materials to brand ourselves, which involve the notion behind being a man or woman and differentiate the means of bad or good. There are various prominent mediums used by the media to convey or direct a message. Images from media arbitrated precepts tend to become the conception of the individual's self. Vigorito and Curry (1998, p. 136) indicate that pop culture is increasingly visual and images seen in the media tend to convey the ideal cultural norms, values and gender relations. These images are not subtle, but explicit notions of what is acceptable in society and how we as individuals should look and think in the public eye. In the twenty–first century, gender equality has been held in high regard both in the macro and micro levels of social and professional contexts. Gender is defined by the features society expects from a male or female depending on their biological sex. According to multiple scholars, research on masculinity and male depiction has become a major focus due to gender becoming a social construct subject to historical change. In the following study I wish to determine how the ideal male and masculinity is understood and defined, how the male identity and masculinity is portrayed in film, computer games and advertising, and how these representations have changed over time. ... However many men still believe that the adverts depicting women in a sexual and often passive posture are not very offensive but rather very funny or sexy. However how would they feel if it were their daughter or sister being advertised throughout the world as a sex object? The Tiger Beer advertisement shown in the appendix is a clear example of the objectification of women in advertising. The Tiger Beer advert was made to appeal to men from the age of 20 to 60. Also the copy is somewhat offensive as it clearly implies that the best things to come out of the 'Far East' are prostitutes and beer. The problem with the woman's stance and sexual nature is that she is viewed merely as an object that must compete with beer for male attention. This stereotype is repeatedly used in several ads where it is expected that the woman should be competing to pleasure the man like beer does. It uses the stereotype of the man who simply must be pleased all day long by beer, women, footy, and fast cars. This stereotype has also appeared in the BMW ad featured in the appendix which shows a woman having sex with a man while the man thinks about the new car he saw in a magazine. This ad also shows the man as someone whose attention must constantly be satisfied with beer, women, footy or cars and each of these elements must compete for his attention whether it's an inanimate object or a woman. The advert makes a joke about the sex industry in Asia clearly implying that Asian prostitutes are an object designed to give men immediate pleasure. • 39. The Ethical Debate On Prostitution The ethical debate regarding the numerous views on prostitution dates back numerous decades. Prostitution is seen by many as the absolute embodiment of patriarchal male privilege, clearly disallowing feminist support or participation (Kesler, 2002, p. 219). However, views vary widely when assessing different studies such as those that measure the possible harm risks inflected on women working in the field. There are two main opposing views on this subject matter, the liberal and the feminist. Those who view prostitution according to a liberal paradigm embrace the view that prostitution, in its "ideal" form, must be viewed as a voluntary contract (Peterson–Iyer, 1998, p. 25). On the other hand, as Alison Jaggar points out, a liberal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The overall moral of her article is to sustain the raising of awareness regarding probable physical, emotional or psychological harm in which prostitutes continue to experience. Also, she attempts to find a middle ground in which feminists may still speak up without neglecting the real needs of modern day prostitutes. It is important, however, to acknowledge the existing social divide between feminists and prostitutes. Rebecca Whisnant and Christine Stark (2004) challenge this perception through identifying the divide in which we assume that whoever we are, the prostitute is not (p. 296). I will proceed by discussing the liberal views debated in this article. Peterson–Iyer claims that the most common approach taken by prostitutes' organizations is to view prostitution as a matter of individual free choice (p. 24). Furthermore, they emphasize the essential autonomy of the prostitute and the client: they are two adult persons who agree to a mutually beneficial arrangement (p. 26). However, these arrangements could deter in some unfortunate cases such as dishonest police, intrusive laws, or customers who fail to hold up one end of the bargain (p. 26). If you could go back in time and walk around the streets of Rome you would find sex everywhere. • 43. Why Are Trade Offs Among Life History Traits So Commonly... . Why are trade–offs among life history traits so commonly observed? Life history traits are an organism's age of maturity, parity, fecundity, and longevity. An organism might live in an environment where the availability of water is low, then an organism has to lose some characters (such as some energy allocate to growth) to give to gain another character (such as the ability to retain water in its body) in order to survive during its' lifetime. Trade–offs among life history traits are commonly observed because the tradeoff character that are dominant pass down to their offspring and it is commonly observed so they can be adapted at the conditions they are living in. 2. Why would organisms with low annual survival rates begin to reproduce at an early age? Organisms with low annual survival rates begin to reproduce at an early age because they could be outgrown by larger competitors due to their short lifespan. Therefore in order to disperse their seeds/progeny to other locations they must reproduce quickly. Another reason is to some small organisms must mature and reproduce early because it is advantageous to having some of progeny survive before an organism die. Benefit of increase in fecundity at that age and costs may be reduced survival and fecundity at older ages. In addition, at an earlier age, an organism can result in having more number of offspring over their lifetime which is favored by Natural selection. 3. • 45. How Gender Role Impacts on Identity Essay When contemplating the topic of gender role and its impact on identity one cannot help but realise that these gender roles have a huge part to play on a person's identity. As gender is a combination of male and female it gives way for a number of characteristics to accompany each sex making them different from each other. This has an important position to play on identity which Kath Woodward stated in her book "Questioning Identity: Gender, Class, Nation" where she said "Without difference there would not be such thing as identity". (Woodward, 2000, pp.51) Unfortunately, however, with these differences there are inequalities. Gender can be described as "the social attributes associated with being a woman or a man in a particular society" (Woodward, 2000, pp.47) A person's gender is then determined by their sex which is "a biological classification". (Woodward, 2000, pp.47) As gender is a social attribute the identities of people of different genders vary from society to society. For example, in many religions, women do not have place in the rituals of the religion as it is simply only for men to do. (Chryssides and Geaves, 2013, pp.331) As religions were formed in certain cultures this shows a clear divide caused by gender roles based on the cultural origin of the religion but also shows that this has an impact on the identities of the male and female members of the religion. This being that the males feel they have more authority over the females of the religion. A lot of inequality among the sexes is simply based on stereotypes. Stereotypes can be explained as "one–sided and exaggerated images of men and women which are deployed repeatedly in everyday life". (Scott and Marshal, 2009, pp. 279) A great example of stereotypical sexist views is portrayed in the humours video of the character Ali G who interviewed a lady about her views on feminism. • 49. Should Prostitution Be Legal? Essay Prostitution has existed in history since before most people can remember. In our time, prostitution is hotly debated as to whether it should be a professional working job, or whether it is immoral and oppressive to women. This debate has existed since the dawn of time, and there is still no clear answer. Society demands that police should stop certain illicit activities from happening in their neighborhoods, but should law enforcement be made to waste their time and effort to arrest those that may or may not be prostitutes? While some believe legalizing prostitution will only encourage more people to buy sex, making prostitution legal will protect those who work in the sex industry. The earliest mentions of prostitution date all the way back to the B.C. era. The Sumerian Records (2400 B.C.) and Hammurabi's code (1780 B.C.) list female prostitution as one of the earliest professions and even include certain codes that outline a prostitute's rights ("Historical Timeline") Only during the middle ages did prostitution begin to be regulated, criminalized, and even abolished in some places. In 1910, the Mann Act, or White–Slave Traffic Act, created a federal United States law against "prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose." Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics (a.k.a. • 55. Women's Sex Trade For Women Thai women are not always lured into the sex trade for reasons that are associated with force or kidnappings. Thai women look at the potential that the sex industry could provide; women seek for the potential to make enough money to support their families and expunge their debts. It is therefore an appealing occupation where women can make a median monthly income from sex work ranging from 5,825 to 7,950 baht. By this, it is important to compare a typical Thai salary of a decent occupation such as a chef or construction worker, in which earnings are around 6,000 baht per month. As history moved on, more countries started to view prostitution negatively. (Sexton and Cushman.) The reason why prostitution became more morally wrong may all be because of religion. Humphreys notes that this form of sex was common because it took relatively less time in a small space compared to other forms of sex. This also eliminated the likelihood of being "caught in the act." Humphreys then noted 50 oral sex encounters in his observation sheet. The tearoom sex also included 53 sexual acts. He compared this record with that of 30 subjects that was observed by a cooperating respondent. The cooperating respondent was also a sexual participant thus the total time–and–place representative sample of participants was 134. Humphrey incorporated sample attrition due to change of address, the two men who engaged in anal sex and those who drove rental cars. Therefore, 100 men was the final sample size that was used in the research study. In the second part of his research, Humphreys interviewed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Aldine Publishing Company Chicago. Tearoom Trade: the use of a public restroom as a place where men of all varieties go to engage in homosexual activity. By engaging in such activity they must accept costs and risks of this behaviour, however will receive a significant reward. As explained in Humphreys book, men involved in the tearoom game, use these facilities because of the social process that is structured to allow him to have a sexual encounter without any outside personal involvement with other participants. With the many rules in Tearooms, men find them much more attractive as it provides a certain protection against his social image, as this type of behaviour can be seen as very inappropriate and rather illegal. The Tearoom Trade as a sexual deviant activity. Laud Humphreys, a sociologist, was dissatisfied with the idea of producing a study so mundane that only focuses on individuals who engage in deviant activity but nothing about how they participate in the deviant world. Humphreys found that the idea of deviant behaviour explored in terms of sociology explains it as organised behaviour that is important to the individuals that engage in the activity, yet not seen as a subculture. Therefore, Humphreys sets out to analyse the personal significance of the Tearoom Trade to the participant. And this is the foundation of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Prostitution In Brazil Essay If prostitution is legal in Brazil, why is prostitution legal if brothels are going to be illegal to operate? Even though prostitution is legal in Brazil, it is illegal to operate or to employ prostitutes in any other way. This is a big issue because there are still brothels that operate secretly in Brazil, but if the Brazilian government's legalized brothels, they would help the Brazilian economy by they can help lead to a chain effect that would significantly benefit Brazil's economy, primarily through tax revenue which will bring in a lot of money for the government. More criminal activity is occurring while these brothels main to be illegal. Many people would argue that legalizing a brothel would just be a gift to pimps, traffickers, and the sex industry. If the brothels are government owned and run by a person they would have to be guidelines and policies that the government has portrayed to them. According to a reading we have covered in class, ... They are referred to as termas because termas are a legitimate way of work, bringing in actual, legal, source of income giving the Brazilian law enforcement a reason of not doing anything illegal. • 78. The Sex Trade Still Exists No one said life would be easy. Every day is filled with trials and tribulations which must be overcome to get to the next. What we face here in the United States is, as we see it, extreme. We see homeless people, families struggling to get by, stock market failing, gas prices rising, unemployment going up, and much more. But elsewhere, their struggles are different. Their obstacles in life are more challenging than our measly problems in this first world country. The sex trade still exists, slavery among women and children, trafficking of girls and drugs, and so much more. From the book Sold by Patricia McCormick comes a story about a girl named Lakshmi and her struggles from the mountains of Nepal carried to Happiness House where she was sold into the sex trade, and through it all is able to learn that, " simply to endure, is to triumph" (16). Lakshmi grew up a poor mountain girl in a village in Nepal. From an early age she was willing to do whatever it took to get a tin roof for her family. "Let me go to the city. I can work for a rich family...and send my wages home to you" (1). Having a tin roof in their village meant they had some money and they would be safe and dry form the rain. However, Lakshmi's stepfather gambled away everything he owned and eventually even Lakshmi. Lakshmi lived and learned in a Patriarchal world. From early on she was taught by Ama, her mother, what her identity in the world needed to be. "...carry yourself with modesty, bow your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
