Research Paper On Almost Famous
Almost Famous
The movie, Almost Famous, is based on a fifteen year old teenage boy named William Miller, who
rises from a high school nerd to a rock 'n' roll journalist for Rolling Stone magazine. The character
and story are based on a real life story of Cameron Crowe, the film's writer and director, who was a
teenage Rolling Stone writer himself. It portrays how Crowe fell in love, lost his virginity and met
heroes that are shared by the protagonist himself. Influenced by the works of rock music and artists
his sister had left behind, William gets assigned by Rolling Stone magazine to do a profile of a
rising rock band, called Stillwater.
The film is ideally about a young kid who sees the real world, witnesses its cruelties and
heartbreaks, and yet finds room for hope. The idea of real is demonstrated when Lester Bangs
advises William to make his stories real and honest. He looks for purity and truth in ... Show more

Based on people's likings and interests, certain media apps or other trends become popular. For
instance, Ipods, Ipads, and Iphones are really popular because you can access your facebook, twitter,
tumblr and instagram on the go. This represents Pop culture because Apple is really good at
marketing which explains why they are so popular. Likewise, Stillwater was a band that was liked
by many. In order to increase their fame, they wanted the audience to perceive them as hard working
and wanted to earn an image of good song writing on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. The
experience of listening to music in the period depicted in Almost Famous is drastically different
today than it was several years back. The public spaces in which people listened to music in the
1960s and 1970s has gradually diminished and even eliminated to the point where we listen to music

The Hero's Journey in Cameron Crowe's Film "Almost Famous"
Almost Famous (2000) is a dramatization of writer/director Cameron Crowe's real–life experiences
as a teenage rock reporter for Rolling Stone. Based on thinly–veiled autobiographical material from
the precocious beginnings of Crowe's early career, the screenplay shapes sentimental memories into
movie magic. But how did Crowe give his own coming–of–age tale such universal appeal? A closer
look reveals that Almost Famous, like most films worth their salt, is yet another incarnation of the
greatest and only mythological adventure, "The Hero's Journey." This relationship can be explained
using the framework of Joseph Campbell's phenomenal book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, ...

He doesn't refuse the call. It's his mother that needs convincing. "As long as I know this is just a
hobby," she says, dropping her son off at a Black Sabbath concert. Her reluctance evokes the
"protective aspect of the THRESHOLD GUARDIAN" (Campbell 82). Notebook in hand, William
knocks at the backstage door. The surly bouncer that answers is the personification of another aspect
of the THRESHOLD GUARDIAN, an ogre of ill will who slams the door on William because he's
"not on the list." William joins a nearby cluster of waiting girls and is instantly smitten by the lovely
Penny Lane–not a groupie, but a retired "Band–Aid." When the girls get whisked backstage, Penny
promises to try to get him a pass, establishing herself as one of his ALLIES.
As William waits, the members of the band Stillwater arrive late to the show. Recognizing them, he
introduces himself as a journalist and asks for an interview. They refuse, yelling, "The enemy! A
rock writer." It's no accident that this nickname sticks. The band members–particularly Russell
Hammond, the guitarist–are the ENEMIES of William's adventure. Far from traditional, out–and–
out villains, these antagonists take more "curiously fluid, ambiguous forms." (Campbell 97) They
are the SHAPESHIFTERS that Lester Bangs has warned him against, the "fake friends" that will
"ruin rock and roll." It's not until William flatters them with his detailed knowledge of their music
that they offer up a fickle form of friendship, bringing

Definition Essay-Do You Like Your Name
Do you like your name? Do you like your name when people are chanting it in joy. Do you like your
name when you hear your name announced for a prize. Or do you not like the sound of it at all? Our
names have distinct meanings. Even if your parents didn't know that your name meant dog, they still
named you your name for a reason. If you did a game winning play and everyone is chanting your
name, Your name almost has a golden and winning tone to it. The name Caleb translates to faithfull
and loyal. My name was used throughout the early 1800s and then disappeared and reappeared again
in the 1960s and has been gaining popularity ever since. I generally like my name, I have never
disliked it. I'v never wished I had a different name. It is kind of

James Agee and Walker Evans Essay
James Agee and Walker Evans
Fortune Magazine, in July and August of 1936, sent James Agee and Walker Evans to research a
story on sharecropping. In the preface of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, Agee describes it as "a
curious piece of work." They were to produce "an article on cotton tenantry in the United States, in
the form of a photographic and verbal record of the daily living and environment of an average
white family of tenant farmers," (IX). James Agee and Walker Evans set out to write and photograph
an article for a magazine, and ended up experimenting with the form of the novel itself.
James Agee was born in 1909 in Knoxville, Tennessee, but was in the urban middle class, so he had
no experience with cotton farming. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Agee and Evans set out to publish an article in Fortune Magazine, but when they brought back their
work to the editors, they were rebuked. The "article" was over 400 pages of controversial writing
and even various book editors refused to publish it as a novel. Finally in 1941 it was published by
Mifflin in Massachusetts after the author was forced to take out a few outlawed words in the state.
They failed in their original mission to produce an "article," but undoubtedly presented a
"photographic and verbal record" of the average white southern tenant farmer families. By living
with three different families for four weeks, Evans depicted their innermost sorrows through his
photographs, and Agee portrayed and emboldened their spirit by his written words. The novel itself
was an experiment in form, with Evans' photos all placed in the front without captions, rather than
dispersed throughout the novel. Even in the text, Agee continually stops himself mid–description
and enters into a stream–of–consciousness describing the difficulties of articulating accurately the
tenant families true expressions. For these reasons, it was considered a failure when it was
published, but also for the same reasons it was considered an amazing success twenty years later in
the 1960s.
In the Preface, Agee conveys that this "is a book only by necessity. More seriously, it is an effort in
human actuality, in which the reader is no less centrally involved than the

What Has Been Gone After The War Essay
Let me tell you a little about what's been going on since the war's been going on. When he first left I
just stayed in the house and cooked and did things I would normally do. Then a couple weeks after
he was gone, I got a job. More employment opportunities opened for women. I got a job where he
used to work. At a factory where we lived. Women became the main population of the factories, and
women's movement progressed. The only bad thing about working was that I got lower pays then
my husband. Soon African–Americans started showing up. They also got recruited a bunch of jobs.
Finally the war ended. It was November 11th, 1918 at 11:00 am. I woke up early for work
wondering if my husband is coming back from the war. It's been 2 long years ... Show more content

But we still didn't have our money that was lost in the bank.
In 1920 the United States added the eighteenth amendment. Which outlawed the production and
consumption of alcohol and was more commonly known as Prohibition. In 1923 we got a telephone.
This was very exciting for all of us. We've never seen anything like this before. Probably because we
live out in the middle of nowhere. We couldn't figure out how to use it for a couple of days. But then
we finally figured it out. Then in 1925 we moved from Savannah,Georgia to Casper,Wyoming. This
was a very long journey for my husband, two kids, and I. We had to travel by our car. It was small
but it was just enough room for the four of us. We had to sell some stuff that we had and get money
for it. We also had to leave some stuff in Georgia. It took us around two days to get there. We only
stopped for food twice, because we have limited amounts of money. And we had to save most of it
for the house.
Finally we got to where we need to be. It was the most beautiful place we've ever seen. We lived
here for the rest of our lives. My husband passed away at age 83 and I passed away at age 84 we
lived the happiest life ever. My kids both got married my oldest son Jack to a beautiful lady named
Jane. And they had three little girls, Mary, Janet, Kay. My daughter got married to a wonderful man
named Shawn. They had four kids. One set of twin boys Robert and Jack II, they also had a set of

The Vanity of Celebrity Fame: "Sunset Boulevard" and...
A celebrity is not a person known for his/her talent or achievement, but an individual recognized for
his/her reputation created by the media. The phase of stardom is slippery, and media may choose to
represent celebrities varying from exaggerated admiration to mockery. The three texts chosen,
movie "Sunset Boulevard", feature article "Over the Hilton" and television show "Celebrity
Uncensored Six" are texts presenting different perception of celebrities than their usual images –
either corrupted by the encircling media, overloads oneself with self–indulgence, or just mocks
celebrity in a broad spectrum. Such media items empower and impresses the audience by perceiving

Besides being at the brink of madness caused by her self–denial of the passing of her fame, Norma
Desmond had also become rather sexual–transgressive. Some male traits shown in Norma consist of
her dominance – she demands over Max, financial independence – owns factories which constantly
makes profits and her assertive nature – she fearlessly confronts her passion for Joe. The way Norma
is ridiculously insane to a degree of dark humour brings sympathy, entertainment and a corrupted
depiction of celebrity to audiences.
Starred by William Holden, the male protagonist, given one of the most mundane names, Joe Gillis,
is a laconic character who interacts with Norma in a reciprocally dependent relationship. Without
Gillis, Norma feels lifeless, loveless and powerless, she depends on him emotionally, and
conversely, without Norma, Gillis is homeless, finance–less and jobless, he depends on her
materialistically. Also, identical to Norma, Gillis is sexually transgressive as well. He possesses
many feminine identities such as his betrayal of integrity – Joe and Norma swaps roles. He
conforms to the reality where his scripts are rejected and adopt the easier role of being Norma
Desmond's gigalo – weakness of character. In Gillis, audiences see a man who forfeited his personal
happiness to gain money–oriented power over others – however, what he really gained is nothing,
Norma nor her money can give him power. The

Essay on Suffering in Photographs
Suffering in Photographs
Photographs are used to document history, however selected images are chosen to do so. Often
times these images graphically show the cruelty of mankind. In her book, Regarding the Pain of
Others, Susan Sontag asks, "What does it mean to protest suffering, as distinct from acknowledging
it?" To acknowledge suffering is just to capture it, to point it out and show somebody else that it
exists. In order to protest suffering, there has to be some sort of moral decision that what is shown in
the photograph is wrong, and a want from the viewer to change that.
Sontag says that throughout history, things focused on in art and history tend to be the "product of
wrath, divine or human." There is much art showing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This strange need is not a new thing, since this focus on violence went all the way back to Christian
and pagan art.
In war, photography and art again serve the purpose of acknowledging and sometimes protesting
suffering. In the First World War cameras were used for military intelligence, to capture an event.
"The caption of a photograph is traditionally neutral informative: a date, a place, names." A
photograph is supposed to just record what happened and not takes sides. However, "it is always the
image that someone chose; to photograph is to frame, and to frame is to exclude." So the photograph
is supposed to be neutral, but the photographer is still deciding what details to focus on. The caption
has just facts on it, because supposedly that is what the photograph is recording. While it is true that
photographs cannot explain everything themselves, they do serve as visual aids to, what otherwise
be, a pallid world.
Goya was an artist who made etchings called The Disasters Of War. These etchings showed the
horrible things that were done by Napoleon's soldiers. They were made in order to shock the viewer
and make them feel the pain of what happened. These sketches did not go in narrative order or show
exact details of an event, they were just images showing that bad things like that happen during war.
Normal captions have dates and places written which detach the viewer from the pain of the picture.
On his sketches,

against a post. Some young cousins of mine running and playing around me, and the traffic going in

there was no rush as compared to in Pakistan. I noticed that the people here were calm, pleasant and

country that has english as the national language. I will look at the differences and similarities that
this country has with The United Kingdom. The country is surprisingly small and has a population
of approximately 3 million people. It is a small island and the largest English–speaking country in
the Caribbean. It was a British colony from 1665 to 1962 and that is probably one of the reasons
why most of the people there speak english. The country i am talking about is obviously Jamaica. ...

What Is Materialism In The City By David Harvey
In 1968, David Harvey published a book titled Rebel Cities: From the Right to the City to the Urban
Revolution, where he argues the importance of changing the current way of urban living. With great
influence from Henri Lefebvre, Harvey offers an anti–capitalist rebellion against today's treatment
of those living in poverty. In Rebel Cities, Harvey uses the term 'right to the city'. He states that this
right is empty in a sense, implying that it is a right that does not have a definition or meaning.
Harvey states that this right represents a collective struggle for the people who have helped in the
building and populating of their city. The 'right to the city' is the right that should allow this
community of people to decide how their city will continue in terms of urbanization. According to
Harvey, the people who have built and constructed the infrastructure, the families, and other cultural

When she states that he told her he wasn't ever going to forget about what they had been through, or

raises the two big questions, one of which is where did her almost lover go? Did he simply leave her
for someone new? Maybe he passed away, and she is still broken hearted about it. Its difficult to
know for sure, but in part of the song, Alison sings about how her almost lover used to sing her
Spanish lullabies. This could mean a few different things, one of which could be that he is Spaniard,
and has left her to go back home to live with his family again. Although it could just simply mean
that he is just bilingual, but the thought of him being bilingual raised other questions to me. Such as
why is he bilingual if his didn't grow up in a Spanish house hold? Did he learn the other language
for a specific reason? I realized that the answer to this question was the same answer to the second
extremely big question that came to mind when I realized that he didn't want to leave her either. This
other question that came to mind when dissecting this song was, why did the almost lover have to
leave? If he never truly wanted to leave her. Looking a bit more into the other two facts that were

Negative Effects Of Being A Celebrity
The Negative Effects of Being Famous
According to Ishikawa, " narcissism is a personality trait that involves regarding yourself as a
superior being. It brings, with it a sense of entitlement......" (as cited in Campbell, W, Keith &

As stated by Mark Young and Drew Pinsky in their research, " they did not find that narcissism was
related to how long someone had been a celebrity, which might suggest that narcissistic individuals
are drawn to the celebrity lifestyle (rather than the celebrity lifestyle gradually turning celebrities
into narcissists)." (as cited in Campbell, W, Keith & Baumeister, R, F 2008, July 5)

True Love In William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet
Shakespeare Most if not all of the information we as the people have today is an extension of past
inventions, creations, and ideas. Art dates as far back to the stone ages and has continued to be a
huge factor throughout. Literature is one of the foundations of art and the person who has had a
huge influence on it even until today is the famous William Shakespeare. " Shakespeare was known
as the greatest dramatist and finest poet who has written in the English language." Dating back to
1592 where records show Shakespeare featured on the London stage was around the same time he
started his writing career. After many successes Shakespeare and his group were wealthy enough to
buy there own theater called the "Globe", which was where most of his plays took place. Romeo and
Juliet was one of Shakespeare's best plays and poems and the morel of that piece is used in today's
songs, movies, plays, poems and any piece of entertainment pertaining to love. It is not just famous
because Shakespeare wrote it but because of the major themes underlying messages and the feeling
you get when you engage yourself into it.
Romeo and Juliet is considered to be a love story and is almost perfect in showing the world what
true love is and the drastic measures he goes though to be with the one his heart longs for.
Displaying true love at first sight, Shakespeare falls in love with Juliet before actually even meeting
her. Romeo is deeply attracted to Juliet in a way that is almost lustful. On

Tadashi's Last Kiss
Prose
A prolonged silence engulfed the surrounding distance between the two figures, an icy wind cutting
across the plateau. They watched each other's every move, every twitch and every breath.
"You always were a glutton for punishment," Tadashi called out, his sharp voice ringing throughout
the highland. He rose his blade and aimed it's pointed tip at her, continuously shifting his weight
until he was satisfied.
"And you for power," she shot back, tightening her grip on the hilt of her weapon.
Tadashi examined her face although her expression bore no emotion. Her eyes were cold and glassy,
lips straightened in a tight line. Today, she was going to kill him.
She lunged forwards, springing across the frozen tundra silently and swiftly. Snow was tossed
around her body as she leapt towards Tadashi with a murderous intent. Plunging her blade at his
chest, she was left thrusting madly at empty air. Tadashi countered, swinging his sword with such
strong momentum that his opponent was sent staggering backwards. But he suspected it wouldn't be
so easy. Her shape flickered and disappeared from sight, leaving Tadashi to patiently await her next
strike. Nothing but the sound of the howling wind could be heard. A knowing smile crossed his face
and he swivelled on his heels, meeting her attack with the satisfying clang of metal upon metal.
Their eyes met and they stood in the cold, neither daring to break the steely gaze. Tadashi was
prepared to end her life as quickly as

Almost Famous (2000)

Over lunch, Lester initiates his role as MENTOR to the aspiring young journalist, warning him
against making friends with the rock stars lest he lose his objectivity to write about them. "You have
to build your reputation on being honest and unmerciful," he says repeatedly. Seeing that William
is serious about his quest, Lester offers him a bona fide writing assignment—1,000 words on Black
Sabbath—effectively issuing the CALL TO ADVENTURE.
William is a willing hero. He doesn't refuse the call. It's his mother that needs convincing. "As long

reluctance evokes the "protective aspect of the THRESHOLD GUARDIAN" (Campbell 82).

Who Is Fanny Mendelssohn
Fanny Mendelssohn was born on November 14, 1805 in Hamburg, Germany to parents Abraham
and Lea Mendelssohn Batholdy. She was the oldest of four siblings. Her brother Felix Mendelssohn
also went on to become a famous composer. Fanny learned the piano from her mother and at the age
of thirteen she could play many of the compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach by heart. Her and her
brother Felix were considered music prodigies. Though her parents were very supportive of Felix
having a career in music they didn't have the same attitude toward Fanny. Her father believed she
should just be a housewife.

They are part of a famous series of piano pieces she wrote based off the months of the year. She
wrote them as a musical diary of the year she spent with her family in Rome. The music started out
slow and deep then slowly bits of lighter, higher notes fell into place. It stayed slow for a while. The
notes softly flowing around on another. Gently gathering speed.
Then it picked up to a faster speed. After a short while it reached an almost astonishing speed. The
melody dancing like butterflies whirling around each in a garden. The feeling of adventure seemed
woven into the music itself. Some parts you could tell how the months were being portrayed. You
almost expect to look out the window and see it being that time of year. A frosty wonderland.
Chapter 3: The Instruments
The piano is the only instrument used in these pieces of music. This perfectly captured the month of
the year theme that Fanny Mendelssohn was trying to express. She was also able to express the thrill
of adventure in a new place with the quick pace of the notes. The rhythm was very complex. The
high notes and deep notes twirling around each other perfectly. Accelerating speed throughout with
the intervals of slower melody could give you shivers of pleasure. These songs show how the almost

Bret Easton Ellis Essay
Bret Easton Ellis is one of the great American writers of our time. Some of his famous works
include his debut novel, Less Than Zero (1985), and his opus, American Psycho (1991), which are
household names for any literary or cinematic buff. Although the man behind the mask may not be
identifiable by all, almost everybody knows the name Patrick Bateman, and recognizes the famous
role played by actor Christian Bale. Although Ellis' literary prose might lead you to believe he was a
dedicated scholar, his extracurricular activities would definitely prove you wrong. He was actually
known for partying, sex, and drugs, the hamartia of almost every human. That exact humanness

It was at the young age of twenty–one that he wrote his first book, called Less Than Zero, which
centers around a main character who returns home one day to discover his girlfriend addicted to

Less Than Zero was Ellis' debut novel, and it quickly rocketed him to fame. The success of his first
book provided him with enough momentum to release his second novel, American Psycho.
Although this would become known as his most famous work, at the time it made him a leper to the
literary population. The level of violence and brutality caused people to condemn his work, and it
wasn't really until the movie adaptation that it gained acclaim. After that his career skyrocketed. In

"Let Us Now Praise Famous Men," was written by James Agee and Walker Evans. The story is
about three white families of tenant farmers in rural Alabama. The photographs in the beginning

In the picture on page (31) you see a small, wooden room, in the middle of this room is a sturdy
table with a peculiar tablecloth upon it; on this sturdy table is a small, glass, oil burning lamp. The
lamp's oil, interpreted to be their lives, hopes, and dreams. This oil is either half full or half empty;
surely I believe it is half full. In the reading, the lamp's oil signifies life, hope, security and safety.
James Agee places these things at the center of the family's existence. This shows that the author of
"The Country Letter" places high respect towards these aspects in life. Their goals were to live life
to the fullest, no one else, but themselves could make them happy.
Of such ultimate, such holiness of silence and peace that all on earth and within extremest

The War Of The Persian War

recorded in early history and lasted a couple of years. The only one that was not, or is thought to be

city of Troy. Another famous war was the Persian wars. This war was the first big war between the
persian empire and Spartans/Athens. After the Persian war, the Peloponnesian war took place, which
was led by sparta. Than in Ancient Greece there were two main conquerors, Philip II and Alexander.
As they are father and son, Philip II did a lot less than his son Alexander. Alexander wanted to fulfill
his father 's visions, which he exceeded his expectations. The trojan war took place in 1250 B.C.E.
As this war has little evidence that it happened, it was passed down through many generations that
this war took place. Many stories have the war happening in the city of Troy. Two famous poets
wrote about this war, Homer and Sophocles, which wrote the Iliad & Odyssey. These poems are part
of evidence that this war took place. One of the stories has a Wooden Horse as a gift to the Trojans,
and when the horse was in the city the Spartans invaded Troy. This war was to believe to be started
by the kidnapping of the Spartan Queen, Helen, by the Trojan prince, Paris. This ended with the
Greeks winning and in some stories, the death of the Trojan prince. The Persian war lasted from 499

Music : The Importance Of Music In The Film
Music has been playing a big role in film since sound could be added to a film, which takes us all
the way back to the early 1900's. Music may be something we listen to in the car, but songs can be
used to portray many different factors in a film. Music can hint the viewer as to what the mood of
characters may be, the setting of a given place, or even the time frame in which the movie took
place. Music helps the director steer their movie in one way or another, depending on their choice of
music. The movie Almost Famous featured portions of 68 different songs performed by various
artists throughout the 60's and early 70's.
For a movie that revolves around music it comes to no surprise that in the very first minutes of the
movie playing a song is already playing. The song played is The Chipmunk Song by The
Chipmunks. Now when you look at the screen, you'd find yourself a bit confused as to why
Christmas music is playing during what appears to be summer time. This selection proves to be
significant because the Christmas music opens us up to the personality of Anita and William's over–
protective, christian–based, traditional valued mother. Their mother seeks to protect the kids from
everything of the world which is where she celebrates Christmas in September, because it isn't
commercialized at that time.

Anglo Saxon Women
During the Anglo–Saxons period, the culture is already diverse and I might say it is quite unique
particularly in the role of women. Anglo Saxons, I can say is the "ancestor" of different cultures
today. I would start with role of women. During the Anglo Saxons Period women have almost equal
rights with men. Actually, the role of the women depends on their status of life but in most cultures a
woman stays at home giving birth to children, serve her husband, a teacher, and if she is part of the
aristocrats (those who are in the highest social class), a supervisor to slaves. A woman in this era has
advantages especially in terms of marriage. An Anglo Saxon woman has the possibility to choose
their husband; possibility because during the Anglo Saxon era, marriages are negotiable but a
woman could reefuse. Since a woman can own possessions such as land and money, a woman can
be bribed by an anglo saxon man with morgengifs. It is like a dowry, it can be land, gold or such.
But bribing a woman needs a marriage contract. The man needs to go to the father of the woman
with his morgengifs and they will negotiate so that the man could marry the women. If the woman is
not part of the aristocrats, she can be a peace weaver. A peace weaver is like an offer; they are forced
to marry a man from the other clan. For example clan A has a conflict or war with clan B, a woman
from clan A must marry a man from clan B or vice versa to settle the tension between the clans.

The Importance Of William Shakespeare's Influence On The...
Through evolution and changing social times, modern society has begun to question the literary
works of famous poets such as William Shakespeare, for his use of predominantly male
representation, overused themes, and debased comedy style. Nevertheless, although social progress
is underway to broaden the range of literary works studied, it is important to examine Shakespeare
in order to recognize his exclusive influence on the English language, depiction of universal
characters, and representation of transferable lessons. Although, the overall ideologies involved are
not agreeable to civilizations today, it cannot be erased from history, thus is imperative to a student's
knowledge of literature Vocabulary is a tool given to society in order to articulate thoughts,
sentiments, wishes, and expression, hence the mandatory study of the English language throughout
elementary school and so forth into post secondary education. Shakespeare has always been a figure
of praise and reference as he attributed to the creation of many of the terms society uses today. In
classrooms students learn of the devices he imposed onto the English language "He invented over
1700 of our common words by changing nouns into verbs, changing verbs into adjectives,
connecting words by changing nouns into verb..." (Mabillard). Consequently, it is not denied, how
Shakespeare physically impacted language as he has added hundreds of terms into scholarly
dictionaries, mandating his influence. In the same way

paragraph, I told you how archeologists recently discovered an almost complete school where the
Gladiators used to train at. They discovered the school in 2011 in an ancient city of Carnuntum. It

pancakes and Donkey was going to blow up the planet. So I went back to Earth where the entire
population ended up eaten and now in my stomach. I later died of starvation from having of food. I

Almost Famous Outline
Almost Famous: An Outline of Life Almost Famous represents the spirit of the 70s in all its "it's all
happening" glory. The yearning for "true" rock 'n' roll and the awkward convergence of the old and
new through music and fashion is clearly highlighted in the film. In trying to emulate the 70s, the
Almost Famous succeeds in making a film that can be considered a coming of age story while also
capturing the essence of the human experience in all stages of life. From William's struggle to be
cool to Russell's quest for something "real" to Lester's acceptance of his utter uncoolness, the film
outlines what I think are the three broad stages of life: adolescence, midlife crisis and acceptance.
The hectic and confusing world of rock 'n' roll especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The film shows that there is no substitute for experience. You can't just get the "Cliff's Notes on how
to live in this world" and you most certainly can't skip parts of life like you can skip grades. Without
going through life and experiencing all it has to offer as it naturally occurs, you don't grow and
mature in a meaningful and long–lasting way. Anita may say that it was her records that set William
on the path to change, but in actuality, William would've had all those confusing thoughts about
being cool and where he fits in the world regardless of the records she left for him. Change is and
growth through experience is inevitable. We see Russell change from a self–loving musician to a
person searching for some meaning and authenticity and finally to a matured adult –something he
wouldn't have been able to do had he not gone through his mid–life crisis–. And as it's last comment
on life, Almost Famous shows that with age age comes a certain sense of confidence in who you are
and a comfort in accepting that and your pace in the

Research Paper On Almost Famous

  • 1. Research Paper On Almost Famous Almost Famous The movie, Almost Famous, is based on a fifteen year old teenage boy named William Miller, who rises from a high school nerd to a rock 'n' roll journalist for Rolling Stone magazine. The character and story are based on a real life story of Cameron Crowe, the film's writer and director, who was a teenage Rolling Stone writer himself. It portrays how Crowe fell in love, lost his virginity and met heroes that are shared by the protagonist himself. Influenced by the works of rock music and artists his sister had left behind, William gets assigned by Rolling Stone magazine to do a profile of a rising rock band, called Stillwater. The film is ideally about a young kid who sees the real world, witnesses its cruelties and heartbreaks, and yet finds room for hope. The idea of real is demonstrated when Lester Bangs advises William to make his stories real and honest. He looks for purity and truth in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Based on people's likings and interests, certain media apps or other trends become popular. For instance, Ipods, Ipads, and Iphones are really popular because you can access your facebook, twitter, tumblr and instagram on the go. This represents Pop culture because Apple is really good at marketing which explains why they are so popular. Likewise, Stillwater was a band that was liked by many. In order to increase their fame, they wanted the audience to perceive them as hard working and wanted to earn an image of good song writing on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. The experience of listening to music in the period depicted in Almost Famous is drastically different today than it was several years back. The public spaces in which people listened to music in the 1960s and 1970s has gradually diminished and even eliminated to the point where we listen to music through our phones or mp3 ... • 2. The Hero's Journey in Cameron Crowe's Film Almost Famous... The Hero's Journey in Cameron Crowe's Film "Almost Famous" Almost Famous (2000) is a dramatization of writer/director Cameron Crowe's real–life experiences as a teenage rock reporter for Rolling Stone. Based on thinly–veiled autobiographical material from the precocious beginnings of Crowe's early career, the screenplay shapes sentimental memories into movie magic. But how did Crowe give his own coming–of–age tale such universal appeal? A closer look reveals that Almost Famous, like most films worth their salt, is yet another incarnation of the greatest and only mythological adventure, "The Hero's Journey." This relationship can be explained using the framework of Joseph Campbell's phenomenal book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He doesn't refuse the call. It's his mother that needs convincing. "As long as I know this is just a hobby," she says, dropping her son off at a Black Sabbath concert. Her reluctance evokes the "protective aspect of the THRESHOLD GUARDIAN" (Campbell 82). Notebook in hand, William knocks at the backstage door. The surly bouncer that answers is the personification of another aspect of the THRESHOLD GUARDIAN, an ogre of ill will who slams the door on William because he's "not on the list." William joins a nearby cluster of waiting girls and is instantly smitten by the lovely Penny Lane–not a groupie, but a retired "Band–Aid." When the girls get whisked backstage, Penny promises to try to get him a pass, establishing herself as one of his ALLIES. As William waits, the members of the band Stillwater arrive late to the show. Recognizing them, he introduces himself as a journalist and asks for an interview. They refuse, yelling, "The enemy! A rock writer." It's no accident that this nickname sticks. The band members–particularly Russell Hammond, the guitarist–are the ENEMIES of William's adventure. Far from traditional, out–and– out villains, these antagonists take more "curiously fluid, ambiguous forms." (Campbell 97) They are the SHAPESHIFTERS that Lester Bangs has warned him against, the "fake friends" that will "ruin rock and roll." It's not until William flatters them with his detailed knowledge of their music that they offer up a fickle form of friendship, bringing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. James Agee and Walker Evans Essay James Agee and Walker Evans Fortune Magazine, in July and August of 1936, sent James Agee and Walker Evans to research a story on sharecropping. In the preface of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, Agee describes it as "a curious piece of work." They were to produce "an article on cotton tenantry in the United States, in the form of a photographic and verbal record of the daily living and environment of an average white family of tenant farmers," (IX). James Agee and Walker Evans set out to write and photograph an article for a magazine, and ended up experimenting with the form of the novel itself. James Agee was born in 1909 in Knoxville, Tennessee, but was in the urban middle class, so he had no experience with cotton farming. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Agee and Evans set out to publish an article in Fortune Magazine, but when they brought back their work to the editors, they were rebuked. The "article" was over 400 pages of controversial writing and even various book editors refused to publish it as a novel. Finally in 1941 it was published by Mifflin in Massachusetts after the author was forced to take out a few outlawed words in the state. They failed in their original mission to produce an "article," but undoubtedly presented a "photographic and verbal record" of the average white southern tenant farmer families. By living with three different families for four weeks, Evans depicted their innermost sorrows through his photographs, and Agee portrayed and emboldened their spirit by his written words. The novel itself was an experiment in form, with Evans' photos all placed in the front without captions, rather than dispersed throughout the novel. Even in the text, Agee continually stops himself mid–description and enters into a stream–of–consciousness describing the difficulties of articulating accurately the tenant families true expressions. For these reasons, it was considered a failure when it was published, but also for the same reasons it was considered an amazing success twenty years later in the 1960s. In the Preface, Agee conveys that this "is a book only by necessity. More seriously, it is an effort in human actuality, in which the reader is no less centrally involved than the ... When he first left I just stayed in the house and cooked and did things I would normally do. Then a couple weeks after he was gone, I got a job. More employment opportunities opened for women. I got a job where he used to work. At a factory where we lived. Women became the main population of the factories, and women's movement progressed. The only bad thing about working was that I got lower pays then my husband. Soon African–Americans started showing up. They also got recruited a bunch of jobs. Finally the war ended. We've never seen anything like this before. Probably because we live out in the middle of nowhere. We couldn't figure out how to use it for a couple of days. But then we finally figured it out. Then in 1925 we moved from Savannah,Georgia to Casper,Wyoming. This was a very long journey for my husband, two kids, and I. We had to travel by our car. It was small but it was just enough room for the four of us. We had to sell some stuff that we had and get money for it. We also had to leave some stuff in Georgia. It took us around two days to get there. We only stopped for food twice, because we have limited amounts of money. And we had to save most of it for the house. Finally we got to where we need to be. A celebrity is not a person known for his/her talent or achievement, but an individual recognized for his/her reputation created by the media. The phase of stardom is slippery, and media may choose to represent celebrities varying from exaggerated admiration to mockery. The three texts chosen, movie "Sunset Boulevard", feature article "Over the Hilton" and television show "Celebrity Uncensored Six" are texts presenting different perception of celebrities than their usual images – either corrupted by the encircling media, overloads oneself with self–indulgence, or just mocks celebrity in a broad spectrum. Besides being at the brink of madness caused by her self–denial of the passing of her fame, Norma Desmond had also become rather sexual–transgressive. Some male traits shown in Norma consist of her dominance – she demands over Max, financial independence – owns factories which constantly makes profits and her assertive nature – she fearlessly confronts her passion for Joe. The way Norma is ridiculously insane to a degree of dark humour brings sympathy, entertainment and a corrupted depiction of celebrity to audiences. Starred by William Holden, the male protagonist, given one of the most mundane names, Joe Gillis, is a laconic character who interacts with Norma in a reciprocally dependent relationship. Without Gillis, Norma feels lifeless, loveless and powerless, she depends on him emotionally, and conversely, without Norma, Gillis is homeless, finance–less and jobless, he depends on her materialistically. Also, identical to Norma, Gillis is sexually transgressive as well. He possesses many feminine identities such as his betrayal of integrity – Joe and Norma swaps roles. He conforms to the reality where his scripts are rejected and adopt the easier role of being Norma Desmond's gigalo – weakness of character. • 7. Essay on Suffering in Photographs Suffering in Photographs Photographs are used to document history, however selected images are chosen to do so. Often times these images graphically show the cruelty of mankind. In her book, Regarding the Pain of Others, Susan Sontag asks, "What does it mean to protest suffering, as distinct from acknowledging it?" To acknowledge suffering is just to capture it, to point it out and show somebody else that it exists. In order to protest suffering, there has to be some sort of moral decision that what is shown in the photograph is wrong, and a want from the viewer to change that. Sontag says that throughout history, things focused on in art and history tend to be the "product of wrath, divine or human." There is much art showing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This strange need is not a new thing, since this focus on violence went all the way back to Christian and pagan art. In war, photography and art again serve the purpose of acknowledging and sometimes protesting suffering. In the First World War cameras were used for military intelligence, to capture an event. "The caption of a photograph is traditionally neutral informative: a date, a place, names." A photograph is supposed to just record what happened and not takes sides. However, "it is always the image that someone chose; to photograph is to frame, and to frame is to exclude." So the photograph is supposed to be neutral, but the photographer is still deciding what details to focus on. The caption has just facts on it, because supposedly that is what the photograph is recording. While it is true that photographs cannot explain everything themselves, they do serve as visual aids to, what otherwise be, a pallid world. Goya was an artist who made etchings called The Disasters Of War. These etchings showed the horrible things that were done by Napoleon's soldiers. They were made in order to shock the viewer and make them feel the pain of what happened. These sketches did not go in narrative order or show exact details of an event, they were just images showing that bad things like that happen during war. Normal captions have dates and places written which detach the viewer from the pain of the picture. On his sketches, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These were the big similarities that I noticed the most. The first thing that really showed some similarity between the two is their relationships with other people. Both Charlie and William are socially different, but for two different reasons. In Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie seems to just be a little slower and William's personality gives out that he was basically sheltered up until he was 15 when he went on tours with the bands. William's mother had also put him in first grade at around 5 therefor he was almost 3 years younger than everyone else in his grade. Bullying is portrayed in both because of ... • 30. The War Of The Persian War In Ancient Greece there were many famous wars and conquerors, in every era. These wars were all recorded in early history and lasted a couple of years. The only one that was not, or is thought to be made up, is the Trojan War. The only things they can go off of are the stories and the ruins of the city of Troy. Another famous war was the Persian wars. This war was the first big war between the persian empire and Spartans/Athens. After the Persian war, the Peloponnesian war took place, which was led by sparta. Than in Ancient Greece there were two main conquerors, Philip II and Alexander. As they are father and son, Philip II did a lot less than his son Alexander. Alexander wanted to fulfill his father 's visions, which he exceeded his expectations. The trojan war took place in 1250 B.C.E. As this war has little evidence that it happened, it was passed down through many generations that this war took place. Many stories have the war happening in the city of Troy. Two famous poets wrote about this war, Homer and Sophocles, which wrote the Iliad & Odyssey. These poems are part of evidence that this war took place. One of the stories has a Wooden Horse as a gift to the Trojans, and when the horse was in the city the Spartans invaded Troy. This war was to believe to be started by the kidnapping of the Spartan Queen, Helen, by the Trojan prince, Paris. This ended with the Greeks winning and in some stories, the death of the Trojan prince. The Persian war lasted from 499 B.C.E ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Music : The Importance Of Music In The Film Music has been playing a big role in film since sound could be added to a film, which takes us all the way back to the early 1900's. Music may be something we listen to in the car, but songs can be used to portray many different factors in a film. Music can hint the viewer as to what the mood of characters may be, the setting of a given place, or even the time frame in which the movie took place. Music helps the director steer their movie in one way or another, depending on their choice of music. The movie Almost Famous featured portions of 68 different songs performed by various artists throughout the 60's and early 70's. For a movie that revolves around music it comes to no surprise that in the very first minutes of the movie playing a song is already playing. The song played is The Chipmunk Song by The Chipmunks. Now when you look at the screen, you'd find yourself a bit confused as to why Christmas music is playing during what appears to be summer time. This selection proves to be significant because the Christmas music opens us up to the personality of Anita and William's over– protective, christian–based, traditional valued mother. Their mother seeks to protect the kids from everything of the world which is where she celebrates Christmas in September, because it isn't commercialized at that time. Due to the rebellious nature of Anita, and she and her mother's disagreement on appropriate music, she decides to move out. In this early part of the movie, she makes her ... • 34. Anglo Saxon Women During the Anglo–Saxons period, the culture is already diverse and I might say it is quite unique particularly in the role of women. Anglo Saxons, I can say is the "ancestor" of different cultures today. I would start with role of women. During the Anglo Saxons Period women have almost equal rights with men. Actually, the role of the women depends on their status of life but in most cultures a woman stays at home giving birth to children, serve her husband, a teacher, and if she is part of the aristocrats (those who are in the highest social class), a supervisor to slaves. A woman in this era has advantages especially in terms of marriage. An Anglo Saxon woman has the possibility to choose their husband; possibility because during the Anglo Saxon era, marriages are negotiable but a woman could reefuse. Since a woman can own possessions such as land and money, a woman can be bribed by an anglo saxon man with morgengifs. It is like a dowry, it can be land, gold or such. But bribing a woman needs a marriage contract. The man needs to go to the father of the woman with his morgengifs and they will negotiate so that the man could marry the women. If the woman is not part of the aristocrats, she can be a peace weaver. A peace weaver is like an offer; they are forced to marry a man from the other clan. For example clan A has a conflict or war with clan B, a woman from clan A must marry a man from clan B or vice versa to settle the tension between the clans. Woman that time ... • 35. Essay about Almost Famous: Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll "I'm a golden god," Russell Hammond shouts from a roof top as he is about to jump off into a pool from a bad acid trip. The iconic rock–n–roll scene of inflated egos and strung out rock stars. However, this is a rare occurrence in Almost Famous. It is a story of a boy, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), becoming a man while learning about the rock–n–roll culture with his only true friend, his tape recorder. William, age fifteen, is traveling with the band Stillwater to interview them for a Rolling Stone article, along the way he has many interesting experiences. Some of these including letting all the groupies stay in his room, almost crashing on an airplane with the band, and falling in love with the illustrious Penny Lane. However, plot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The final two main characters are Anita Miller (Zooey Deschanel) and her mother Elaine Miller (Frances McDormand). These characters are foils of each other and thus give William a well– rounded childhood. While mother Elaine hates rock music, daughter Anita worships it. When Anita turns eighteen she decides to leave home to become a flight attendant. Upon leaving she gives her records to William claiming 'They will change your life.' This gives William his first encounter with true rock and does in fact change his life. Mother Elaine may be portrayed as the overbearing and oppressive mother by Anita, but she really just seems to be concerned about her son's wellbeing. A.O. Scott gives an unique description of Elaine, "Their protective mother, a college professor portrayed with glowing intelligence and scary intensity..." If it is not for Elaine, William would most likely have taken drugs at some point and may have never finished his article. Because of her, the audience is given the constant reminder that the world the band lives in is not the same as the world William lives in. The director of this film is ... • 36. The Importance Of William Shakespeare's Influence On The... Through evolution and changing social times, modern society has begun to question the literary works of famous poets such as William Shakespeare, for his use of predominantly male representation, overused themes, and debased comedy style. Nevertheless, although social progress is underway to broaden the range of literary works studied, it is important to examine Shakespeare in order to recognize his exclusive influence on the English language, depiction of universal characters, and representation of transferable lessons. Although, the overall ideologies involved are not agreeable to civilizations today, it cannot be erased from history, thus is imperative to a student's knowledge of literature Vocabulary is a tool given to society in order to articulate thoughts, sentiments, wishes, and expression, hence the mandatory study of the English language throughout elementary school and so forth into post secondary education. Shakespeare has always been a figure of praise and reference as he attributed to the creation of many of the terms society uses today. In classrooms students learn of the devices he imposed onto the English language "He invented over 1700 of our common words by changing nouns into verbs, changing verbs into adjectives, connecting words by changing nouns into verb..." (Mabillard). Consequently, it is not denied, how Shakespeare physically impacted language as he has added hundreds of terms into scholarly dictionaries, mandating his influence. In the same way ... According to "Gladiator University," archaeologists found this school not from digging, but using specific tools. One tool they used was named aerial photography, it was taken from aircraft and has a ground penetrating radar. Not only did they use that tool, but they used an electromagnetic sensor that can locate hidden bricks underground. In my opinion, that tool would help the most. In the last paragraph, I told you how archeologists recently discovered an almost complete school where the Gladiators used to train at. They discovered the school in 2011 in an ancient city of Carnuntum. It was a really big school that was built in the second century. It had cell blocks, a bath complex, and a training arena. This school may not have only been the biggest one, but also the first school made especially for Gladiators. Gladiators are a really cool topic to study or learn about. • 39. Almost Famous Outline Almost Famous: An Outline of Life Almost Famous represents the spirit of the 70s in all its "it's all happening" glory. The yearning for "true" rock 'n' roll and the awkward convergence of the old and new through music and fashion is clearly highlighted in the film. In trying to emulate the 70s, the Almost Famous succeeds in making a film that can be considered a coming of age story while also capturing the essence of the human experience in all stages of life. From William's struggle to be cool to Russell's quest for something "real" to Lester's acceptance of his utter uncoolness, the film outlines what I think are the three broad stages of life: adolescence, midlife crisis and acceptance. The hectic and confusing world of rock 'n' roll especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film shows that there is no substitute for experience. You can't just get the "Cliff's Notes on how to live in this world" and you most certainly can't skip parts of life like you can skip grades. Without going through life and experiencing all it has to offer as it naturally occurs, you don't grow and mature in a meaningful and long–lasting way. Anita may say that it was her records that set William on the path to change, but in actuality, William would've had all those confusing thoughts about being cool and where he fits in the world regardless of the records she left for him. Change is and growth through experience is inevitable. We see Russell change from a self–loving musician to a person searching for some meaning and authenticity and finally to a matured adult –something he wouldn't have been able to do had he not gone through his mid–life crisis–. And as it's last comment on life, Almost Famous shows that with age age comes a certain sense of confidence in who you are and a comfort in accepting that and your pace in the ...
