4. EVAGGELISTRIA
It is well known that the history of the Cathedral of Kissamos,
Evaggelistria, is considered to be important. The first Cathedral of
Kissamos, Saint Spyridon, was built in 1865. As the population of
the town began to increase, Bishop Eirinaios decided to build a
larger church, the current Cathedral of Kissamos, which was called
Evaggelistria. The church’s council funded its construction, which
started in 1968 and was completed in 1985.
5. Evaggelistria celebrates:
the Annunciation of Virgin Mary, Saint Eirinaios and the Three
Hierarchs. It is built according to the architectural style that was
common in many Cretan monasteries since the 16 th century.
Archaeologists gave permission for the construction to be built,
despite the fact that there were roman mosaics discovered right
underneath the Cathedral.
6. Additionally, there is a hall next to the
church which is used as a parish center, while the tomb of Bishop
Eirinaios lies south of the temple. In addition to the above, the
Cathedral hosted the opening of the play “Christopher Columbus”
written by Nickos Kazantzakis and performed by the great Greek
actor Manos Katrakis, who comes from Kissamos.
