1. Different interpretations of Hayley Williams
The first front cover Hayley is much defeminised. Her hair is barely visible as it is put up
into a short style almost like a Mohican which shows the genre of music she is part of.
She has one fist to her face and one punching out to the audience. This is a very
aggressive pose which shows she is not the typical girly girl you would expect for a
singer. In her punch the writing says ‘am who I am with NO apologies’ this shows she
is not afraid to be who she is. Her eyes are darting straight at the audience drawing
them to her. The colour scheme is red; this colour can be perceived in many
different ways. In this front cover it could be aggressive because she is being directly
violent to the audience.
The second front cover is very different to the first as she looks calm and relaxed.
Hayley is wearing yellow which can be seen as a calming colour. However the word
‘Security’ on her top still suggests she is in charge and isn’t to be messed with. Her
hair colour is very bright and dominant. It clashes with the yellow colour scheme of
the front cover this could be because she is a clash to most women. She is very
different and original and can do what she likes. Her eyes are soft and searching
making her looks slightly vulnerable. This relates to her featured article ‘I have
nothing left to prove’ showing she is upset and was her fans to support her.
In comparison to the first two front covers the third is completely different. The main
image is not just Hayley it is the rest of Paramore too. She is leaning out to the
audience making direct contact. The rest of the band doesn’t stand out as much as
Hayley. Similarly to the other two front covers her hair is most vibrant. Her eyes are
2. very direct and stand out staring at the audience. She is pouting and shows her
attitude and shows she is the most dominant within the band. The boys and
positioned back which contrasts with Hayley leaning forward towards the audience.
The colour pink is used around her which symbolises the bond which they have
within the band.
From looking at the three magazine covers I am able to see why each of Hayley’s
interpretations and poses vary from each. The pose depends on the story which is
featured. When the story is about fighting back Hayley is posing aggressively
however when her story is emotional so she looks vulnerable. Colours on the front
cover also vary depending on the main feature article. This is because it sets the
mood of the magazine.
