Racial discrimination, aggression, and police brutality have been an ongoing issue in the U.S, It was
present in the past and continues to be a problem to this day, peaceful protests are turing into murder
scenes children are being taught to fear cops instead of trust them people are afraid to leave their
home. There is an obvious underlying issue causing innocent lives on both sides to be lost.
In the past year there have been 300+ fatal shootings between police and African Americans some of

Metropolitan Sprawl
Methodology
Design
This research will answer to the preceding research questions in five steps:
Step one: I will refine and update the Ewing et al. (2002) metropolitan sprawl indices to 2010This
study will differ from the Ewing et al.'s 2002study in three respects. First, it will include additional
metrics from various data sources such as Walk Score, NAVTEQ road data, Smart Location
Databases and National Land Cover Database in order to increase validity and captures more aspects
of each four dimensions (development density, land use mix, activity centering and street
accessibility).
Second, for measuring the degree of centering, as the third dimension of sprawl, this study will seek
to identify the location of central business districts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A metropolitan area is a region that consists of a densely populated urban core and its less–
populated surrounding areas that are economically and socially linked to it. The criteria of defining
metropolitan areas changed in 2003. Smaller MSAs remained the same, but larger metropolitan
areas, previously referred to as consolidated metropolitan statistical areas (CMSAs) are now defined
as MSAs (see figure 1). Different portions of CMSAs, previously referred to as primary
metropolitan statistical areas (PMSAs), have been redefined and reconfigured as metropolitan
divisions. For example, the old New York CMSA consisted of eleven counties in two states and four
PMSAs: New York PMSA, Nassau–Suffolk PMSA, Dutchess County PMSA and Newburgh, NY–
PA PMSA (see figure 2). The current New York MSA consists of twenty–three counties in three
states and four metropolitan divisions. Metropolitan divisions do not perfectly substitute for PMSAs,
as they have different size thresholds (2.5 million vs. 1 million population), but they come as close
to representing homogenous units as we can come with current census geography. Metropolitan
divisions are designated for each of the eleven largest

Lost Our Homes Pet Foundation (LOH)
The name of the community that I researched is Lost Our Homes Pet Foundation(LOH). It is located
on 2323 South Hardy Drive in Tempe, Arizona. L.O.H. was founded in 2008 when the founder, Jodi
Polanski, wanted to have a world in which all pets have loving homes and are treated with respect.
Now, that is the vision and purpose of L.O.H. The mission of L.O.H. is to ensure that all pets have
loving homes when families face major life changes and have to give up their pets. L.O.H. also is
striving to have no pets living on the streets. They are making as much effort as they can to rescue
any stray animals they find. L.O.H. will give medical care and shots to those animals if needed.
When the cat/dog is back to health, L.O.H. will put the cat/dog in a room with other cats/dogs in the
same age group. The rooms are almost always clean and well kept by volunteers. IMPORTANT:
Lost Our Homes Pet Foundation is a non–kill animal shelter. It does not and will never kill any
animals even if there is a overpopulation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jodi Polanski is the founder and executive director. There is Michelle Lewis, who is the director of
operations, Chris Harris, who is the program manager, and Joni Loyd, who is the Medical
Coordinator. There are many other staff member and board members, and they are all part–time.
There is a handfull staff and board members, but most of the community is made up of just ordinary
people with a passion for animals. There are a couple thousand volunteers at L.O.H. They volunteer

Neighborhood Essay
The village that I live in is called MerricK . Merrick is a hamlet in Nassau County, Long Island on
the South Shore. This village is 35 miles from New York and one expressway exit from Jones
Beach. The name "Merrick" is taken from Meroke, the name (meaning peaceful) of the Algonquian
tribe . The first people that lived here are the Merokee Indians that farmed and fished in the area. In
1650, a Reverend Denton moved his congregation to the area from Stamford, Conn., and founded
the Town of Merrick. They were drawn by the fertile soil and the Meadow Brook – then a wide
rushing stream, now a small trickle paralleling the parkway that took its name. Merrick has a total
area of 5.2 square miles (13 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (11 km2) ... Show more content on

The houses in South Merrick are selling for close to a million dollars or more because the close

architectural styles of the houses vary: central hall colonials, split levels, high ranches, wide line
ranches, small capes, white stucco Spanish ranches. The crime rate in Merrick is very low. Few
times I forgot the car's doors wide open or even the engine running for couples of hours until my
husband came home and everything was perfectly fine. The lecture that followed after it is another
story. Another characteristic of Merrick is the fact that a large majority of its residents choose to
grow their families in a town where they spent their childhood. The surroundings are beautiful. Well
kept properties, a willow bordered pond where duck–feeding is allowed, tennis courts and baseball
fields run by the Town of Hempstead are nearby, as are a swimming pool and indoor ice rink run by
Nassau County. There are four synagogues in town – two Conservative, one Reform and one
Orthodox – and seven churches – two Catholic, one Episcopal, one Baptist, one Methodist, one
Presbyterian and a newly completed Greek Orthodox Church topped by a copper dome. In 2004 me
and my husband decided to buy a house. We were living in Queens at that time. Finding the perfect
neighborhood was challenging.

Population Growth In America Essay
Between 1990 and 2010 the United States of America has added more than 60 million people to its
population. The question above asks how has the population changed ethnically over the ranges of
Country State or county are there any ethnic differences in scale and where has the growth been
positive and or negative over the years? As the results show we looked at the whole country, New
York State and the 12 major counties of the State.
The United States has grown by approximately 30 million people ever 10 years. The 'white alone'
population has remained the dominant ethnicity in almost every table we looked at except Table 4.
Although being the dominant group its population percentage have decreased in all the tables with
the biggest changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Westchester counties. Areas such as Erie and Monroe the population growth match the United States
and New York State. Its seems like this particular group is moving towards the inner cities in New
York State
Asians and South Pacific Islanders have grown as a percentage in the country by 1 every census
period in the country and New York State. Their growth is may just be population growth because of
live births. But in Kings, Queen, Nassau, and Suffolk however, shows a growth that has to be
migration may be even chain migration. The population in each of these areas grew by more than 50
percent in 1990–2000 and more than 30 percent in the following census. This instance is the first
place I see signs of immigration. It also shows that the within the country and the state you would
never see these amazing changes.

except for one county, Erie County. Their population changed by over 50 percent for country state

St. Patrick's Day Traditions
I chose to do more in depth research on the traditions and customs of St. Patrick's Day. Whether it
be mainly in the U.S.A or in Ireland, I want to know it all. One thing I do know is that every year on
March 17th, America unites as one and celebrates the Irish. There are religious ceremonies, parades,
and people make certain drinks and food items. National Geographic claims that until the 1970s, St.
Patrick's Day in Ireland was a minor religious holiday. A priest would acknowledge the feast day,
and families would celebrate with a big meal, but that was about it. "St. Patrick's Day was basically
invented in America by Irish–Americans," Freeman said. Americans always find a way to celebrate
something. It is exciting to make all different types of food and get together with the family. St.
Patrick is one of the patron saints of Ireland. He is said to have died on March 17 in or around the
year 493. St. Patrick grew up in Roman Britain, but was captured by Irish raiders and taken to
Ireland as a slave. Years later, he returned to his family and entered the church. He later returned to
Ireland as a missionary and worked in the north and west of the country. According to popular
belief, St. Patrick got rid of all the snakes in Ireland. However, it is thought that there have been no
snakes in Ireland since the last ice age. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Death Penalty In The United States Essay
New York State Currently there is not an active death penalty in New York state. New York's history
of capital punishment goes back to colonial times, with the second most executions of any state

Long Island 's Unique Ecological And Socio Economic...
The foundation of any food system includes natural resources and the knowledge and skill to

paramount to the functionality of that system. "Long Island's unique ecological and socio–economic

government policies, and economic practices."("LI Food System Report Card" 2014) Researching

This saturation places demands that must be sourced outside local and regional confines.
Historically, planners and developers have waited until this point before looking outside a region for
potential development sites. This is a difficult point from which to return, and in many cases
impossible. Capacity to produce sufficient food on a local scale is an enormous hurdle for this
bioregion. Perhaps more challenging is that this blight is common to many adjacent regions. One
solution is to improve on alternative production processes such as Urban Agriculture (UA) which
until recently has been associated with cities in developing countries. However, "recent concerns
about economic and food security have resulted in a growing movement to produce food in cities of
developed countries including the United States."(Lovell 2010) "With the growing interest in urban

importance of integrating food systems into land use planning. APA general policies related to food

Renegades on Strategic Group Map Essay

can identify competitors and positioning against rival venues. After analyzing within a 50–mile
radius, 8 Movie theaters, two malls, ice cream shops and Splash Down Water Park were found to be
main competitors. Positioning on the map consisted of Duration of Expenses on the vertical axis and

Reversely, buyer power is deemed to be low. Ticket prices are relatively cheap, as the Renegades
have exhausted many options leaving little room available alternative products. Barriers of entry
directly correlate with proximity and profit. As the Renegades have become an established minor
league team, it's in another's teams interest to locate where a Minor League team isn't situated. A
team situated in close proximity to Dutchess stadium would not obtain the same profit as it would be
directly competing against an already well established company. The new entrant would fiscally be
making a better decision if it were to locate a highly dense population area with few barriers of entry
unlike Dutchess County. There are three towns with substitutes that are main competitors to the
Renegades. Wappinger Falls, New York holds two locally owned parks and a Fun Central, a game
entertainment geared towards families. Poughkeepsie, New York holds the Poughkeepsie Galleria

Lyme Disease In The 1970's
Lyme disease was discovered in the 1970's, as any other disease was, by a large number of cases,

many cases that the doctor marked it as an unknown disease. It wasn't until later in the 1980's that
there were more widespread cases throughout the north–east. Lyme disease is becoming a serious
problem in the north–east and especially in New York State, given the drastic increase of cases.

Essay on Henry VI and the Wars of the Roses
From his fifteen year minority to the inept rule of the rest of his reign, Henry VI was a "child", at
least as far as governing ability was concerned. The period of his minority and the time that he was
the titular king laid the groundwork for the Wars of the Roses. Had Henry been an intelligent king,
with at least some political acumen, and the ability to win the respect of his nobles, their may have
never been any Wars of the Roses. But his weakness in allowing government by favorites and
governing foolishly on his own, at the very least directed his country down the road to a bloody civil
war.
Henry VI was born on December 6, 1421, and became king of England on September 1, 1422.
Problems began almost immediately, though these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since it was made up of nobles, they tried to protect each others' interests, something not always for
the public good.
Even after he had come of age, Henry suffered from a lack of popular support, something that
invariably helps the "other side" in a civil war. He was considered a fool by the general populace,
which weakened his authority. During his reign, there were many charges of seditious libel to come
before the courts (Storey, 34) and they usually dealt with someone slandering the king. Common
people and yeomen were calling the king a "lunatic", a child, and a fool (Storey, 35). For instance,
one Sussex yeoman called the king a "natural fool" and said that "the king was no person able to
rule the land" (Storey, 35). Evidently, if even the common people were slandering the king, they
must have had some basis for it. The king did nothing to prove the people wrong, rarely going on
progresses to smooth out his image. He stayed in the Home Counties for much of his reign, and even
that did not improve his image with the people.
Among the upper classes, he proved over and over again that he was not a good king. He rarely, if
ever, participated in Parliament, and often did not attend sittings of the king's council. When the
council sat at Westminster, Henry usually managed to be somewhere else (Storey, 35). These actions
give a picture of a king who, though solicited for his opinions, did not want to get involved in the

The Thompson Paternal Ancestors
This paper summarizes the ancestral immigartion of my primary paternal ancestors. The Thompson
surname in itself traces its roots back to Reverend William Thompson (abt. 1598 to abt 1666).
Within this paternal lineage are the surnames Willis, Meade, and Stevenson. Reverend William

Essay on The Genesee River Watershed
Introduction: The Genesee River Watershed. The Genesee River and its watershed is a major
tributary to Lake Ontario. The river originates in the Allegheny Plateau in the town of Ulysses,
Potter County, Pennsylvania, about fifteen miles south of the New York State border (GFLRPC,
2004). The river flows north through Allegheny, Livingston, and Monroe Counties and forming a
portion of two borders between Livingston County and Wyoming or Monroe Counties. Letchworth
State Park runs along the Genesee River encapsulating 14,350 acres of the watershed and contains
the "Grand Canyon of the East" a gorge 550 feet deep and six miles long.

Section 2: The Genesee River Watershed Resources There are several resources that are found in the
GRW including potable water, animal habitat, forests, freshwater fisheries, and wetlands among
others. Many communities use the watershed for their water supply. Hemlock and Canadice Lakes
in the eastern side of the Lower Genesee River Watershed supplies eighty percent of the water for
the city of Rochester, New York (GFLRPC, 2004). Conesus Lake is the water supply for four
municipalities, Geneseo, Avon, Conesus, and York, New York. Perry, and the hamlet Silver Lake are
supplied with water from Silver Lake. Other communities use water from reservoirs the rivers in the
watershed for their drinking water. The agricultural and rural areas that do not have a public water
supply use wells dug into the groundwater of the watershed. The Genesee River has areas that are
suitable for spawning and nursery of lake sturgeon (NYSDEC, 2005), and the watershed supports
many other fish and waterborne creatures. Brown Trout are found in nearly the entire watershed
minus a few locations where at least one other species of trout reside such as Lake, Brook, or

that do not have trout; however, they both have

"A symbolic span over which Westchester and Rockland Counties will move virtually overnight,
twenty years into the future" When Governor Thomas F. Dewey made this pronouncement in
December of 1955, it does not seem as though even he knew how true his words would be. It took
till 1989 and "Field of Dreams" to coin the phrase "If you build it they will come", but someone
could have very well made the same observation during the 1950s in reference to Rockland County
New York. Both of these statements cannot fully impress into the minds of readers that changes that

During the first few years of the 1950's this landscape saw the rapid disappearance of farms and
agricultural lands. This major change occurred from 1950–1954, when the number of farms in the
county shrank from 408 to 139. The majority of the farms lost were less than 100 acres. At the turn
of the twenty first century about 25 farms still operated in the county, with a total acreage of just
over 600. This is a drastic change from the 18,711 acres that were devoted to farms in 1940. This
current farming culture is dominated by nurseries and greenhouses on about 24 acres. Most farms in
pre–suburban Rockland County produced tomatoes, strawberries, apples, and other crops. In 1968
county officials said that "since 1960 the urbanizing progress had continued to the point where the
number of rural families and settlements is infinitesimal and number of operating farms has reached
almost the vanishing point" thereby recognizing the changes that were then occurring involving land
usage.
This change in land usage during the early 1950's was precipitated by plans for a bridge over the
Hudson River. This bridge was to connect Rockland and Westchester counties between Tarrytown in
Westchester and Nyack in Rockland. The building of this bridge would become the first step that
facilitated massive changes in the area. Developers and farmers saw the opportunities that would

Analysis Of Ta-Nehisi Coates The Paranoid Style Of...
In Ta–Nehisi Coates essay "The Paranoid Style of American Policing," he briefs the readers on the
rise in police violence against the black community and the lack of trust people have for the officers
causing this crime. He concludes by saying "A state that allows its agents to kill, to beat, to taste,
without any real sanction, has ceased to govern and has commenced to simply rule." Almost all
would agree with this statement, for it does has many examples supporting its authenticity. In the
closing statement, Ta–Nehisi Coates provides us a statement inquiring that "police are turning to
police brutality to solve situations where it's not needed then leading them to overuse their power.
The use of excessive physical assault or verbal assault during police procedures, such as
apprehending or interrogating a suspect should never be acceptable. Deadly force is not always
excessive force. However, when deadly force exceeds the force that is necessary to create a safe
environment, it is considered police brutality. This is emphasised in Ta–Nehisi essay when said "his
father called the police, who apparently arrived to find the 19–year–old wielding a bat. Interpreting
this as a lethal threat, one of the officers shot and killed LeGrier and somehow managed to shoot and
kill one of his neighbors, Bettie Jones." this situation could have been conducted differently Though
the officer over used his authority and instead of simply calming the man down governing both the
father and son he chose to kill which wasn't rational . In a new York time article called "Promoting
Police Brutality" they speak on how our President Trump encouraged police officers to use brutal
methods when apprehending suspected criminals.an attorney in Suffolk County is quoted in their
article saying he may use the Trump video in future trials, because it "exemplifies the mind–set and
today's culture" in law enforcement in long island. Supporting the first part of the Ta–nehisi claim
"A state that allows its agents to kill, to beat, to tease, without any real sanction, has ceased to

Balancing Tax Breaks
Balancing Tax–Breaks and Job Creation with Profit Motive in a PR World
In difficult economic times, government officials and businesses often work together to induce a
trickle–down effect to revitalize troubled economies. However, this can create unequal distributions
of wealth when incentives cause businesses to redistribute their geographical investments.
Long Island is an expensive place to do business. To combat this fact, governments often offer tax
breaks to significantly reduce the cost of doing business. This usually requires the firm in question
to remain on Long Island to create jobs. But, boon to local companies that they are, tax breaks aren't
always enough to stop companies from leaving places like Suffolk or Nassau. Many have ... Show

"The Goya deal is a perfect example of New Jersey's misplaced priorities," commented Gordon
MacInnes, president of New Jersey Policy perspective, a left–leaning think tank based in Trenton.
"Giving all these tax breaks makes it harder for the state to invest in the assets that do build strong
economies, like a great workforce, reliable transportation and public education."
Goya Foods began in Manhattan when a Don Prudencio Unanue, and his wife, Carolina, immigrated
from Spain. They started the business under the pretense of helping New York Latinos eat their
native food. Goya's growth was a direct result of maintaining close relations with Hispanic
consumers. It supplied a reliable source of Hispanic and Latino customs and tastes in their new
American homes. Goya's advantage was in distributing their food in local, corner bodegas despite
continued expansion into large supermarket chains.

Minimum Living Wage
Let's take a look at Figure.1 above, which shows the impact of a minimum wage on employment.
The blue colored line shows the supply from labor while the red line shows the demand for labor.
Initially, if the market is allowed to work by itself, the equilibrium market wage is W1 and the
employment level is E1. At E1, the labor market clears and there is no shortage or surplus. However,
implementation of minimum wage or minimum living wage changes the scenario significantly. If
the government sets a wage floor of W* at that wage, the labor would want to supply more,
therefore increasing the supply of labor from E1 to E2. However, as the wages now higher, the
quantity demanded of labor would be lower, at E3. This leads to an excess supply of labor ... Show

Amy Glasmeier (2014) came up with living wage calculator "compiling geographically specific
expenditure data for food, childcare, health care, housing, transportation, and other basic
necessities" (Source: http://livingwage.mit.edu/). In this section, to highlight the issue, we pick up
three places across the United States. We chose places from New York State – Delhi village,
Delaware County, New York; Stony Brook CDP, Suffolk County, New York and one city from Utah
– Provo city, Utah County, Utah. A quick look at the minimum wage in the three areas would reveal
that they share the same minimum wage of $ 7.25 per hour. However, based on the living standards,
the living wage is calculated and compared. The comparison is shown in Figure 2 below. The graph
clearly reveals that there is a huge variation in living wage in the three places. The living wage is as
high as $13.03 in Stony Brook, NY and as low as $8.73 in Provo, UT. In spite of the variation
between living wage, the minimum wage is a low $7.25 in all three places, which is even lower than
the lowest living wage, in Provo, UT. An analysis with a larger number of cities would have shown
the same trend across the country. Therefore, it shows that the focus should be on the living wage,
not on minimum wage. Due to this disparity between living wage and minimum wage, minimum
wage earners have to working double shifts or live dependent on benefits for financial support in
order to have the bare

Teacher Identity And Identity
Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines identity as the distinguishing character or personality of an
individual. Teacher identity implies both a cognitive psychological and sociological perspective:
people develop their identity in interaction with other people, but they express their professional

diploma. My father Immigrated to America in the early 1940's from Puerto Rico, while my mom
was born in the Bronx N.Y and is African–American and Bajan decent. I was born in the Bronx in

we spent our weekends and summers in the Bronx and Spanish Harlem, which allow my siblings

It 's important to understand that we are all a product of our own environment and what goes into it
comes out as a positive or negative result. Long Islanders have faced many problems with ground
water pollution. According to http://oceanworld.tamu.edu, after doing countless geographical
surveys every few decades from the 1940 's, early 1960 ', 1980 's, mid 1990 's to now, scientist have
concluded that the higher levels of stress was causing species changes and a lower diversity to the
environment. It was determined that the 1962 samples were heavier in delta13C suggesting that
organic carbon was being oxidized at a greater rate in the 1990 's then in the 1960 's. Scientist have
come to a hypothesis that the waters stress was a contributing factor to an increase in waste water
effluent treated sewage which a study measured a fair amount of bacteria spores called Clostridium
perfringens which was found in human excrement ("Waste Water in Long Island," n.d.). This meant
that Long Island has a big sewage pollution problem. According to Suffolk County 's comprehensive

Committee of Correspondence. The Massachusetts General Assembly recommended in June 1774
that a broad congress be convened in Philadelphia to talk about relations among Parliament and the
American colonies. The first Continental Congress took place in Philadelphia on September 5, 1774,
with every one of the colonies with the exception of Georgia represented. In the whole span of
American history, there has in no way been, a more inspiring congregation of luminous statesmen.
One of the most significant features of the first Continental Congress was that New England and
southern patriot leaders revealed that they may possibly work with each another in the quest for
universal objectives. During the first Continental Congress, representatives measured four chief
items of business. Representatives of the Massachusetts General Assembly, convening in Suffolk
County, Massachusetts, accepted a string of resolutions announcing the Coercive Acts in opposition
to the British Constitution; suggestive of arrangement of a new government in Massachusetts with

Analysis Of Robert Moses 's ' Master Builder '
Robert Moses also known as, New York's "Master Builder", was born on December 18,1888 in
Connecticut. He grew up in New York City after his family relocated in 1897 . In 1924, Moses
became President of Long Island State Park Commission and since than, held power until 1968,
when the Rockefellers started possessing all the power. Robert Moses accomplished a lot of
construction in New York that was seen as negative and positive by many people. He built 658
playgrounds, 36,000 acres of parkland, 416 miles of parkway, 13 bridges, and 15 expressways.
Robert Moses was unstoppable during his time in power. During the summer of 1950, "Robert
Moses held more official power than anyone in New York's history" ; he had control over the $25
million that flowed through its tollbooths each year . However, Robert Moses also used his power to
upset many people, in particular people in lower incomes. Moses was known for putting families out
of their existing homes for a "better" housing program that supposedly benefit them but in reality it
was a complete nightmare. "The projects in Harlem are hated. They are hated almost as much as
policemen, and this is saying a great deal. And they are hated for the same reason: both reveal,
unbearably, the real attitude of the white world, no matter how many liberal speeches are made, no
matter how many lofty editorials are written, no matter how many civil–rights commissions are set
up" – James Baldwin . This was just one of many projects

(2002) metropolitan sprawl indices to 2010This study will differ from the Ewing et al.'s 2002study in three respects. First, it will include additional metrics from various data sources such as Walk Score, NAVTEQ road data, Smart Location Databases and National Land Cover Database in order to increase validity and captures more aspects of each four dimensions (development density, land use mix, activity centering and street accessibility). Second, for measuring the degree of centering, as the third dimension of sprawl, this study will seek to identify the location of central business districts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A metropolitan area is a region that consists of a densely populated urban core and its less– populated surrounding areas that are economically and socially linked to it. The criteria of defining metropolitan areas changed in 2003. Smaller MSAs remained the same, but larger metropolitan areas, previously referred to as consolidated metropolitan statistical areas (CMSAs) are now defined as MSAs (see figure 1). Different portions of CMSAs, previously referred to as primary metropolitan statistical areas (PMSAs), have been redefined and reconfigured as metropolitan divisions. For example, the old New York CMSA consisted of eleven counties in two states and four PMSAs: New York PMSA, Nassau–Suffolk PMSA, Dutchess County PMSA and Newburgh, NY– PA PMSA (see figure 2). The current New York MSA consists of twenty–three counties in three states and four metropolitan divisions. Metropolitan divisions do not perfectly substitute for PMSAs, as they have different size thresholds (2.5 million vs. 1 million population), but they come as close to representing homogenous units as we can come with current census geography. Metropolitan divisions are designated for each of the eleven largest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

L.O.H. was founded in 2008 when the founder, Jodi Polanski, wanted to have a world in which all pets have loving homes and are treated with respect. Now, that is the vision and purpose of L.O.H. The mission of L.O.H. is to ensure that all pets have loving homes when families face major life changes and have to give up their pets. L.O.H. also is striving to have no pets living on the streets. They are making as much effort as they can to rescue any stray animals they find. L.O.H. will give medical care and shots to those animals if needed. When the cat/dog is back to health, L.O.H. will put the cat/dog in a room with other cats/dogs in the same age group. The rooms are almost always clean and well kept by volunteers. • 9. Neighborhood Essay The village that I live in is called MerricK . Merrick is a hamlet in Nassau County, Long Island on the South Shore. This village is 35 miles from New York and one expressway exit from Jones Beach. The name "Merrick" is taken from Meroke, the name (meaning peaceful) of the Algonquian tribe . The first people that lived here are the Merokee Indians that farmed and fished in the area. In 1650, a Reverend Denton moved his congregation to the area from Stamford, Conn., and founded the Town of Merrick. They were drawn by the fertile soil and the Meadow Brook – then a wide rushing stream, now a small trickle paralleling the parkway that took its name. Few times I forgot the car's doors wide open or even the engine running for couples of hours until my husband came home and everything was perfectly fine. The lecture that followed after it is another story. Another characteristic of Merrick is the fact that a large majority of its residents choose to grow their families in a town where they spent their childhood. The surroundings are beautiful. Well kept properties, a willow bordered pond where duck–feeding is allowed, tennis courts and baseball fields run by the Town of Hempstead are nearby, as are a swimming pool and indoor ice rink run by Nassau County. There are four synagogues in town – two Conservative, one Reform and one Orthodox – and seven churches – two Catholic, one Episcopal, one Baptist, one Methodist, one Presbyterian and a newly completed Greek Orthodox Church topped by a copper dome. • 11. Population Growth In America Essay Between 1990 and 2010 the United States of America has added more than 60 million people to its population. The question above asks how has the population changed ethnically over the ranges of Country State or county are there any ethnic differences in scale and where has the growth been positive and or negative over the years? As the results show we looked at the whole country, New York State and the 12 major counties of the State. The United States has grown by approximately 30 million people ever 10 years. The 'white alone' population has remained the dominant ethnicity in almost every table we looked at except Table 4. • 13. St. Patrick's Day Traditions I chose to do more in depth research on the traditions and customs of St. Patrick's Day. Whether it be mainly in the U.S.A or in Ireland, I want to know it all. One thing I do know is that every year on March 17th, America unites as one and celebrates the Irish. There are religious ceremonies, parades, and people make certain drinks and food items. National Geographic claims that until the 1970s, St. Patrick's Day in Ireland was a minor religious holiday. A priest would acknowledge the feast day, and families would celebrate with a big meal, but that was about it. "St. Patrick's Day was basically invented in America by Irish–Americans," Freeman said. Americans always find a way to celebrate something. It is exciting to make all different types of food and get together with the family. St. Patrick is one of the patron saints of Ireland. He is said to have died on March 17 in or around the year 493. St. Patrick grew up in Roman Britain, but was captured by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave. Years later, he returned to his family and entered the church. He later returned to Ireland as a missionary and worked in the north and west of the country. According to popular belief, St. Patrick got rid of all the snakes in Ireland. However, it is thought that there have been no snakes in Ireland since the last ice age. The ... The DeFeo family lived a charming life amongst beautiful beaches, mansions, and big boats. They had anything a person could wish for. Perhaps more challenging is that this blight is common to many adjacent regions. Essay on Henry VI and the Wars of the Roses From his fifteen year minority to the inept rule of the rest of his reign, Henry VI was a "child", at least as far as governing ability was concerned. The period of his minority and the time that he was the titular king laid the groundwork for the Wars of the Roses. Had Henry been an intelligent king, with at least some political acumen, and the ability to win the respect of his nobles, their may have never been any Wars of the Roses. But his weakness in allowing government by favorites and governing foolishly on his own, at the very least directed his country down the road to a bloody civil war. Even after he had come of age, Henry suffered from a lack of popular support, something that invariably helps the "other side" in a civil war. He was considered a fool by the general populace, which weakened his authority. During his reign, there were many charges of seditious libel to come before the courts (Storey, 34) and they usually dealt with someone slandering the king. Common people and yeomen were calling the king a "lunatic", a child, and a fool (Storey, 35). For instance, one Sussex yeoman called the king a "natural fool" and said that "the king was no person able to rule the land" (Storey, 35). Evidently, if even the common people were slandering the king, they must have had some basis for it. The king did nothing to prove the people wrong, rarely going on progresses to smooth out his image. He stayed in the Home Counties for much of his reign, and even that did not improve his image with the people. Among the upper classes, he proved over and over again that he was not a good king. This major change occurred from 1950–1954, when the number of farms in the county shrank from 408 to 139. The majority of the farms lost were less than 100 acres. At the turn of the twenty first century about 25 farms still operated in the county, with a total acreage of just over 600. This is a drastic change from the 18,711 acres that were devoted to farms in 1940. This current farming culture is dominated by nurseries and greenhouses on about 24 acres. Most farms in pre–suburban Rockland County produced tomatoes, strawberries, apples, and other crops. In 1968 county officials said that "since 1960 the urbanizing progress had continued to the point where the number of rural families and settlements is infinitesimal and number of operating farms has reached almost the vanishing point" thereby recognizing the changes that were then occurring involving land usage. This change in land usage during the early 1950's was precipitated by plans for a bridge over the Hudson River. In Ta–Nehisi Coates essay "The Paranoid Style of American Policing," he briefs the readers on the rise in police violence against the black community and the lack of trust people have for the officers causing this crime. He concludes by saying "A state that allows its agents to kill, to beat, to taste, without any real sanction, has ceased to govern and has commenced to simply rule." Almost all would agree with this statement, for it does has many examples supporting its authenticity. In the closing statement, Ta–Nehisi Coates provides us a statement inquiring that "police are turning to police brutality to solve situations where it's not needed then leading them to overuse their power. The use of excessive physical assault or verbal assault during police procedures, such as apprehending or interrogating a suspect should never be acceptable. Deadly force is not always excessive force. However, when deadly force exceeds the force that is necessary to create a safe environment, it is considered police brutality. This is emphasised in Ta–Nehisi essay when said "his father called the police, who apparently arrived to find the 19–year–old wielding a bat. Interpreting this as a lethal threat, one of the officers shot and killed LeGrier and somehow managed to shoot and kill one of his neighbors, Bettie Jones." this situation could have been conducted differently Though the officer over used his authority and instead of simply calming the man down governing both the father and son he chose to kill which wasn't rational . "The Goya deal is a perfect example of New Jersey's misplaced priorities," commented Gordon MacInnes, president of New Jersey Policy perspective, a left–leaning think tank based in Trenton. "Giving all these tax breaks makes it harder for the state to invest in the assets that do build strong economies, like a great workforce, reliable transportation and public education." Goya Foods began in Manhattan when a Don Prudencio Unanue, and his wife, Carolina, immigrated from Spain. They started the business under the pretense of helping New York Latinos eat their native food. Goya's growth was a direct result of maintaining close relations with Hispanic consumers. It supplied a reliable source of Hispanic and Latino customs and tastes in their new American homes. Goya's advantage was in distributing their food in local, corner bodegas despite continued expansion into large supermarket chains. Can the Government Take a Stand Against Corporate ... • 58. Minimum Living Wage Let's take a look at Figure.1 above, which shows the impact of a minimum wage on employment. The blue colored line shows the supply from labor while the red line shows the demand for labor. Initially, if the market is allowed to work by itself, the equilibrium market wage is W1 and the employment level is E1. At E1, the labor market clears and there is no shortage or surplus. However, implementation of minimum wage or minimum living wage changes the scenario significantly. If the government sets a wage floor of W* at that wage, the labor would want to supply more, therefore increasing the supply of labor from E1 to E2. However, as the wages now higher, the quantity demanded of labor would be lower, at E3. This leads to an excess supply of labor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Amy Glasmeier (2014) came up with living wage calculator "compiling geographically specific expenditure data for food, childcare, health care, housing, transportation, and other basic necessities" (Source: http://livingwage.mit.edu/). In this section, to highlight the issue, we pick up three places across the United States. We chose places from New York State – Delhi village, Delaware County, New York; Stony Brook CDP, Suffolk County, New York and one city from Utah – Provo city, Utah County, Utah. A quick look at the minimum wage in the three areas would reveal that they share the same minimum wage of $ 7.25 per hour. However, based on the living standards, the living wage is calculated and compared. The comparison is shown in Figure 2 below. The graph clearly reveals that there is a huge variation in living wage in the three places. The living wage is as high as $13.03 in Stony Brook, NY and as low as $8.73 in Provo, UT. In spite of the variation between living wage, the minimum wage is a low $7.25 in all three places, which is even lower than the lowest living wage, in Provo, UT. An analysis with a larger number of cities would have shown the same trend across the country. Therefore, it shows that the focus should be on the living wage, not on minimum wage. Due to this disparity between living wage and minimum wage, minimum wage earners have to working double shifts or live dependent on benefits for financial support in order to have the bare ... This experience changed my life forever in which I now see the world through a different lens. At an early age in life, the elders of the family always taught us about the African history and what it means to be of the African Diaspora. Long Islanders have faced many problems with ground water pollution. According to http://oceanworld.tamu.edu, after doing countless geographical surveys every few decades from the 1940 's, early 1960 ', 1980 's, mid 1990 's to now, scientist have concluded that the higher levels of stress was causing species changes and a lower diversity to the environment. Scientist have come to a hypothesis that the waters stress was a contributing factor to an increase in waste water effluent treated sewage which a study measured a fair amount of bacteria spores called Clostridium perfringens which was found in human excrement ("Waste Water in Long Island," n.d.). • 76. Historical Analogy of the First and Second Continental... HISTORICAL ANALOGY OF THE FIRST AND SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS Introduction CONTINENTAL CONGRESS, 1ST (1774) AND 2ND (1775–1781). The political state of affairs in Massachusetts produced by the English Coercive Acts, that had been approved in reaction to the Boston Tea Party, riled up such radical New York patriot leaders as Alexander McDougall and Isaac Sears and to suggest the assembly of a general colonial congress to the Boston Committee of Correspondence. The Massachusetts General Assembly recommended in June 1774 that a broad congress be convened in Philadelphia to talk about relations among Parliament and the American colonies. The first Continental Congress took place in Philadelphia on September 5, 1774, with every one of the colonies with the exception of Georgia represented. In the whole span of American history, there has in no way been, a more inspiring congregation of luminous statesmen. One of the most significant features of the first Continental Congress was that New England and southern patriot leaders revealed that they may possibly work with each another in the quest for universal objectives. During the first Continental Congress, representatives measured four chief items of business. Representatives of the Massachusetts General Assembly, convening in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, accepted a string of resolutions announcing the Coercive Acts in opposition to the British Constitution; suggestive of arrangement of a new government in Massachusetts with ... He built 658 playgrounds, 36,000 acres of parkland, 416 miles of parkway, 13 bridges, and 15 expressways. Robert Moses was unstoppable during his time in power. During the summer of 1950, "Robert Moses held more official power than anyone in New York's history" ; he had control over the $25 million that flowed through its tollbooths each year . However, Robert Moses also used his power to upset many people, in particular people in lower incomes. Moses was known for putting families out of their existing homes for a "better" housing program that supposedly benefit them but in reality it was a complete nightmare.
