This document discusses the benefits of integrating technology into math classes to address issues students commonly have with the subject. It argues that technology can present math material in more engaging ways that accommodate different learning styles. The document provides several examples of educational technologies and websites that teachers can use to supplement math lessons, including apps, videos, blogs, podcasts, and interactive websites for visualizing concepts like graphing. It emphasizes reviewing all internet content for appropriateness and reliability before using in the classroom.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION BENEFITS MATH LEARNING
1.
2. BENEFITS AND REASONING FOR
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
Throughout our experience in the MAT
program and working in schools, there’s one
main concept we should have grasped by now
and that’s how every individual is different.
We all have different strengths and
weaknesses and won’t always learn best the
same way.
Mathematics tends to be a more resented
subject and one that students often have
trouble understanding. In math class you
commonly hear the students say “why do we
need to learn this?” and “I’ll never use this in
real life!” despite the fact that math is seen
and used almost every where and is extremely
beneficial.
The purpose of my presentation is to show
how technology can be used to help deflate
some of these common issues in math classes
and with math lessons. Different forms of
electronic aids can help present the material in
different ways that can be more entertaining,
3. CREDIBILITY OF INTERNET CONTENT
All information, websites, videos, and any
internet content have been reviewed as safe,
appropriate, and reliable not only for the use of
this presentation but for any implementation
within a classroom environment.
Images have been collected from yahoo and
google images as well as screenshots taken off
given websites. For proper citation, hyperlinks
have been attached to the images and URL’s
can be found within the note section.
Videos have been formatted to display within
the presentation (hopefully) but links to the
4. KIDSPIRATION
Kidspiration is a great program which allows teachers to create their own
diagrams, worksheets, graphs, charts, or any visual displays for a given
lesson or topic. The teacher can either print out copies for the class or even
just project it up on the projector/Smartboard for the students to look at while
working on their own paper so they have to copy and graph properly
themselves.
5. WEB 2.0
Teachers pay teachers is a great website
which allows teachers to stay connected
and share effective lesson plans with
each other. It allows you to not only
narrow down your search by subject but
by grade, resource, and featured filters as
well. If you needed a graphing lesson for
common core, a fun game, or a lesson
that uses the white/smartboard, this
website allows you to find exactly what
you need. Price varies from free to 10+
so you can be generous or even make
some side cash.
PowerSchool is a great way for teachers,
students, and even parents to stay
connected. It can be used on the
computer or even as a phone app and
allows for teachers to post grades and
parents/students to check them.
Social Medias such as facebook, twitter,
and instagram also provide services for
teachers to stay connected and share
information. Such as making a group on
6. BLOGS
Blogs can be a helpful way of relaying
information not only from teacher to
teacher but teacher to student and teacher
to parent as well. They can be good for
helping students stay on top of
assignments and good visual/verbal aids
for instructions.
One blog I was lucky to find is one that is
done daily by an 8th grade mathematics
teacher at Slavens School district. This
teacher in particular posts all of his lessons
and assignments each day on the blog so
that others (teachers, admin., students,
parents) can follow along with what the
class does daily. This is great because it
not only helps with graphing lessons but
other lessons that apply to the same grade
level! This site gave me greater
appreciation towards the impact that blogs
can actually have in a classroom
environment!
Another blog I found useful was Chalk Talk!
It’s similar to teachers pay teachers
because it allows for teachers to share
lessons but it gives them more freedom to
describe and talk about the lesson and how
it went. This site is great because it has a
7. PODCASTS
Podcasts are a great way to help auditory
learners with any lesson. They can be used
as a way to help reinforce old knowledge by
letting students hear important information
again or they can even be helpful for
explaining new information. Some times the
way we teach a lesson doesn’t make sense
to some students especially in mathematics
when a lot of problems can be done/solved
differently. Podcasts allows for another
explanation of the material besides our own
and can even lead to new alternatives to
problem solving.
Itunes is a great provider for podcasts and
can usually be found using a podcasts
search on the itunes store. Two
mathematics blogs I was able to find
through Itunes were Math Dude and Math for
Primates. They both discuss many great
mathematical topics, including graph
functions and graph tips.
8. VISUAL PODCAST
Visual Podcasts are a great way of
combining the auditory and visual
aspects of teaching. They not only
have the voice of another person
teaching a certain topic but allow
for you to follow along with a video
display as well.
The Video Math Tutor is a great
website that provides different
types of mathematics tips. Such as
tips on getting started in math
class, using/reading the textbook,
studying, and even calculator use.
The site even provides brain
teasers, basic math lessons, and
algebra lessons which can all be
useful 6th grade and up.

9. APPLICATIONS (APPS)
Apple and android do a great job
providing apps for both mobile
phones and computers. This is great
because a lot of schools tend to
provide computers either microsoft
or apple macbooks, such as my
middle school. You can find plenty of
education apps and through a filtered
search I could find mathematical
apps and graphing apps as well!
They have apps for all age groups
and they range from mathematical
tools (calculators, rulers, etc.) and
practice exercises to fun educational
games.
Math Playground is a great website
that is education friendly and student
safe. From graphing games, to word
problems, math videos, to common
core, there are plenty of opportunities
for all types of learners. Students are
growing up in a world of
entertainment and video games so
10. PHOTO MATH VIDEO (CLICK ^)
THIS APPLICATION SEEMS A LITTLE HIGH RISK IN TERMS OF THE WAY IT CAN BE USED BY STUDENTS,
FOR EXAMPLE STUDENTS CAN USE IT TO HELP THEM COMPLETE HOMEWORK WHICH WOULD HARM
INDEPENDENT THINKING. HOWEVER IF IMPLEMENTED PROPERLY IT HAS BENEFITS SUCH AS HOW
STUDENTS CAN USE IT AS A WAY TO CHECK ANSWERS OR EVEN GET HELP WITH ONES THEY ARE
STRUGGLING ON. IT CAN HELP BREAK DOWN THE STEPS TO THE PROBLEM AND IS A COOL UP TO
DATE APP THAT CAN BE FOUND ON ANY APPLE OR ANDROID PHONE!
APPLICATIONS (APPS)
11. EDUCATIONAL WEBSITES/TEACHING AIDS
IXL is a great website that lets you
pick a subject and then pick any
grade k-12. It can be valuable for
not only students but teachers as
well. It contains all topics for that
grade in the common core
curriculum and has practice
exercises teachers can either use
or assign!
Khan academy is a similar website
and also has practice excerices
and videos for k-8, high school and
beyond! Also great way for
teachers to achieve more
information and exercises.
Moby Max is a great website that is
great for student and teachers in
K-8 schools teaching common
core. The middle school I intern at
uses this website as a way for
students to complete various
curriculum based exercises and
even exams. The teachers can
check up on how many exercises
the student has completed, what
they got right and wrong, and their
grades on exams (which can be
categorized to be on graphing).
Students can earn points which
allow them to exchange points for
games as a reward.
12. WORKSHEET
Math aids is a great
website that provides
hundreds of worksheets
for all topics. There is a
great selection for
graphing worksheets. It
can help students
practice their
coordinate planes and
even making their own
graphs and fun shapes!
Worksheets can tend to
be a little repetitive and
don’t always appeal to
every learning style but
they can still be useful
when implemented
periodically. They also
allow for good
homework or partner
exercises which help
build a sense a
14. POLLS
A big problem in school
today is students on their
cell phones. Poll
everywhere is a great
website that allows
teachers to create polls
which students have to
answer by either sending a
text or using a computer.
It’s educational but allows
students to have fun
learning because they feel
a sense of freedom using
their phones and it can be
seen as “cool”.
Polls provide great visual aids to help teachers start open end discussions
and get a class thinking about a topic. It’s also a great way to review and
assess a lesson and see how well students understood the topic. Sometimes
students are too shy to share their thoughts or answers and this can be a
helpful tool to get everyone participating.
15. INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS
These are some great videos that help teach and reinforce
graphing concepts. Clicking on the boxes should start to
video or open hyperlink.
