Head of Department: Dr.ari Sami Hussain Nadhim, Assist Professor.Coordinator: Mazin Murad, senior lecturer.<br />Course Description<br /> Neurosurgery (or Neurological Surgery) is the surgical specialty involved in the treatment of disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.Neurosurgery is the branch of surgery that deals with the diagnosis, assessment and surgical management of disorders of the nervous system. The specialty developed in the first half of the twentieth century. Modern neurosurgery has benefited greatly from advances in microsurgery, computer assisted imaging computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), magnetoencephalography (MEG) and the development of stereotactic surgery. Some neurosurgical procedures even involve the use of MRI and functional MRI intraoperatively<br />Course Objectives <br /> The course in Neurosurgery aims that the student should be able to: <br />1-corelates the theoretical information with the practical and clinical work in the ward, which includes: <br />Investigation in Neurosurgery.<br />Congenital CNS anomalies. <br />Head injury. <br />Intracranial hemorrhages.<br />Raised intracranial pressure. <br />CNS tumours. <br />CNS infections. <br />Diseases of spine and spinal cord.<br />2- Performing proper neurological examination. <br />3- Discussion of common neurosurgical operative techniques <br />Materials and Resources <br />Required Readings(Textbooks) Short practice of surgeryEssentials of neurosurgery Recommended Readings 1-Principals of neurosurgery 2-Hand book of neurosurgery. Related Resources WWW.Neurosurgeryonline.com<br />Attendance and behavior<br />Attendance Students are expected to attend all classes and to complete all assignments for courses in which they are enrolled. An absence does not relieve the student of the responsibility to complete all assignments. If an absence is associated with a university-sanctioned activity, the instructor will provide an opportunity for assignment make-up. However, it is the instructor’s decision to provide, or not to provide, make-up work related to absences for any other reason. Academic Honesty Plagiarism. In speaking or writing, plagiarism is the act of passing someone else’s work off as one’s own. In addition, plagiarism is defined as using the essential style and manner of expression of a source as if it were one’s own. If there is any doubt, the student should consult his/her instructor or any manual of term paper or report writing. Violations of academic honesty include: 1. Presenting the exact words of a source without quotation marks; 2. Using another student’s computer source code or algorithm or copying a laboratory report; or 3. Presenting information, judgments, ideas, or facts summarized from a source without giving credit. Cheating. Cheating includes using or relying on the work of someone else in an inappropriate manner. It includes, but is not limited to, those activities where a student: 1. Obtains or attempts to obtain unauthorized knowledge of an examination’s contents prior to the time of that examination. 2. Copies another student’s work or intentionally allows others to copy assignments, examinations, source codes or designs; 3. Works in a group when she/he has been told to work individually; 4. Uses unauthorized reference material during an examination; or 5.
