This document discusses caseous lymphadenitis, a chronic infectious disease of sheep and goats caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis or Corynebacterium ovis. It is manifested by abscesses in the lymph nodes and loss of condition. Infection typically occurs through wounds contaminated with the bacteria. Clinical signs include enlarged lymph nodes and generalized disease with weight loss. Postmortem findings include caseous abscesses in lymph nodes and organs. Treatment involves wound disinfection and culling infected animals.

CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS
This is a chronic infectious disease of sheep and goats
manifested by abscesses in the lymph nodes and loss of
condition.
One of the most important causes of great economic
losses in sheep industry.

CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS
Causative agent:
• It is caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis or
Corynebacterium ovis which present in large quantities in
the pus discharging from ruptured L.N.
• Caseous lymphadenitis has a worldwide distribution.
CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS
Mode of infection and Transmission:
• Infection is mostly occurred as a result of contamination of abrasions
or wounds with C. ovis during shearing, docking, vaccination,
castration and surgical operation.
• Discharge from the lymph nodes, via wounds caused by shearing,
castration and docking, contaminated sheep dips, skin abrasions or
traumatized oral mucosa.
• Animals with open abscesses should be segregated in order to
prevent the spread of the disease.

CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS
Clinical findings :
• Animal is lagging behind the flock.
• Gradual enlargement of the superficial lymph nodes (pre-scapular and pre-femoral,
submandibular and parotid L.N are mostly affected).
• Enlarged L.N. neither hot nor painful.
• Generalized disease is associated with gradual emaciation, depression and loss of
appetite.
• In generalized cases, lesions were distributed through lung, liver, spleen and kidneys.
• Dyspnea as well as Purulent ocular and nasal discharge.
• In older lesions, the pus is lamilated and get surrounded by fibrinous capsule that give
the onion appearance on cut section.

CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS
Postmortem findings :
• Caseous abscesses in the superficial lymph nodes and carcass
musculature.
• Firm and dry abscess in the kidney and other organs Soft pasty abscess in
the early stages changes to firm and dry with a characteristic laminated
appearance in the later stages of disease.
• Abscess content is creamy and pasty in goats.
• Pneumonia.

CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS
Differential diagnosis:
• Abscesses in the organs and viscera (suppurative
lymphadenitis), Meliodiosis, Neoplasm, Echinococcosis and
other parasitic lesions
CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS
Diagnosis:
• Gradual enlargement of the superficial lymph nodes which are neither hot
nor painful.
• Isolation and identification of the causative agent from the ruptured L.N.

CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS
Treatment:
• Deal the case as a cancer or septic wound.
Control:
1. Apply strict hygienic measures during shearing.
2. Wound disinfection should be follow.
3. Regular examination of L.N and culling of the suspected cases from the flock.
4. Careful handling of the affected cases in order to reduce the incidence of abscess rupture.
5. Raising the animals vitality using BCG in order to increase the nonspecific immunity.
6. Vaccination of animals using formalized whole culture vaccine or toxoid.

TICK PYAEMIA OF LAMBS
• Acute febrile infectious disease of sheep caused by S. aureus and characterized by
general abscess formation in skin, S/C tissue, muscle, joints and internal organs as
liver, lung, kidneys and meninges.
Cause:
• S. aureus is a normal inhabitant m.o on the skin and as a result of the pores or sores
which produced by ticks or rains during raining season.
• S. aureus get invade the blood resulting in bacteremia with subsequent localization in
any organ resulting in abscess formation.
• The disease is commonly occurred In summer as well as rainy season.
• Lambs of 2-7 weeks old are mostly susceptible.
