3. This presentation will show my own opinion surrounding aspects of
death, everything associated with death I find fascinating.
Death is a subject that throughout time has been celebrated and feared, it has also
been a taboo subject.
There are many cultural differences each having their own understanding
about what death is and its significance to them.
The 4 areas I have chosen to talk about are particularly interesting to me.
WHY DEATH?
4. EGYPTIANS
The Egyptians believed that in order to pass to the afterlife they had to go
through a set of rituals.
The rituals included…
Mummification
Casting of magic spells
Buried with possessions.
Elaborate tombs, with paintings of the journey
they had to take, were built to house the
sarcophagus of the Pharaohs.
The afterlife is what fascinates me more
because of the steps they have to take to get
to there.
In their tombs they had
the items they needed
to pass through the
doors to the afterlife
such as a
boat, chariot, their
pets, gold, money, food,
servants.
6. DAY OF THE DEAD.
Day of the Dead is when Mexican families
spend a few days celebrating the lives of
their past loved ones.
The families lay out flowers, candles
and clean the graves of their
ancestors.
They also put out gifts for the dead
to receive as tokens.
The village and families then stay up all night socialising in the
graveyards telling stories about their dead relatives.
I think it’s a happy event to share with others and remembering loved ones
and the fact that it is still death but they celebrate it together.
9. VICTORIANS
Queen Victoria started the
tradition of wearing black to
mourn the dead in England after
Prince Albert passed.
Victorians also took photos of
their dead as though they were
still alive to capture the memory.
They wore mourning jewellery which
was mainly made including the hair of
their lost relatives into elaborate black
broaches.
The funerals of rich Victorians were
eccentric as the horses were decked
with finery such as feather and lace, the
horses pulled a large carriages with
windows so passers by could see the
coffin.
The dead were laid to rest in
extravagant mausoleums and beneath
detailed headstones depicting angels
and crosses.
11. PRESENT DAY
Death today is a subject that most people would prefer to avoid.
Like the Victorians nowadays people out of respect and tradition still adorn
black clothing to funerals.
I am interested in death, dying and funerals because
it is a natural occurrence that will happen to
everybody eventually and they way that people
perceive death, some people take it seriously
whereas others see it as a celebration.
Whereas if it is a child's funeral the family and friends will usually dress
more light-hearted and make it a celebration rather than a sad occasion.
