The Hammerwich Hoard, the largest Anglo-Saxon treasure ever found, was discovered in Staffordshire, UK in 2009. It contained over 1,500 pieces of gold and silver jewelry and fragments of weaponry from the 7th century Kingdom of Mercia. Worth £3.3 million, fundraising efforts led by the Art Fund and involving public donations helped acquire the hoard for Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Potteries Museum in Stoke to develop the story of the hoard through the Mercian Trail exhibition. Further study is needed to understand the significance of the hoard and what it can reveal about Mercia and Anglo-Saxon society.
