Viching invasion . <ul><li>Who were the Vikings ? </li></ul><ul><li>Came from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. </li></ul><ul><li>They were mostly farmers , craftsmen or traders. </li></ul><ul><li>Many Vichings were great travellers. </li></ul><ul><li>The vichings in Britain </li></ul><ul><li>-In 793 the Vikings arrived in north-east England. </li></ul><ul><li>-In 865 they invaded England. </li></ul>

Viking life . <ul><li>Viching houses </li></ul><ul><li>- Wood, stone or blocks of turf . </li></ul><ul><li>Viking clothes </li></ul><ul><li>Rings, bracelets, necklaces and brooches. </li></ul><ul><li>Men, women and children </li></ul><ul><li>- Helped on the farm, milked the cows and made cheese. </li></ul><ul><li>Adults at the age of 15 or 16. </li></ul><ul><li>Food and feasting </li></ul><ul><li>Big feast for weddings, funerals. </li></ul><ul><li>Like wrestling, athletics, fencing or archery. </li></ul><ul><li>Law and order </li></ul><ul><li>Rules by king. </li></ul><ul><li>- Laws for criminals by assembly. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Viking beliefs . The Norse myths -Many different gods. - Adventures with the gods and giants. Norse gods and goddesses -Frey, Thor, Loki, Freyja, Odin. The Vikings and Christianity -Old religion at the same time. -Colours such as blue, yellow and white.
  5. 5. Travel, trade and exploration Viking ships - Strong, lightweight and beautifully. -Wood Trading - Such as silver, silk, spices, wine, jewellery, glass and pottery . Discovering new lands - Brave sailors and explorers . - The Faeroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland.
  6. 6. What happened to the Vikings ? The end of the Viking age -Many conflicts and battles with English . What the Vikings left behind Archaeological remains -Houses, burial sites, treasure hoards, stone sculpture and writing carved in 'runes'. Language -'husband', 'egg', 'law', 'knife' and 'window‘ . -Thursday is 'Thor's Day‘. Place names -Ending in -by, -thorpe, or –ay. Stories - Many stories about real people
