Causes Of Bias In The Media
Bias in the Media: Cause and effect rough draft While today most americans have access to huge
media outlets such as MSNBC and Fox News, They no longer feel the sense of unbiased reporting
that honest journalism was built on. It seems that the stories always tend to have a political twist to
it. With the public feeling misled, it leaves us not knowing where to turn for the truth. The common
perception of the channels is that MSNBC tends to favor Liberal–Democrat ideals. On the other
hand, the belief is that Fox News represents the Conservative–Republican ideals. A perfect example
was election day, When Donald Trump started to pull away and close out the remaining states to
upset Hillary Clinton. The reporters and newscasters on MSNBC looked

Fighting Without Knowledge Will Hurt Essay
In this era of information overload, our brains are bombarded by so many different news outlets it
can be difficult to choose which channel you want to watch. With all the accusations of liberal or
conservative bias dominating the feuds between the cable news channels, it would be easiest to
choose the channel that we believe best fits our own ideological views. When you look at MSNBC
and Fox News the ideologies seem to be completely opposite, but they have some similarities. Both
are accused of having either a liberal or a conservative bias and it is not very difficult to tell which
side the outlet leans toward, because of their constant bickering back and forth.
Fox News Channel may have an abundance of conservative opinion programs ... Show more content

To some this seems absurd, but it is what his base group wants to hear. Whereas on the other side,
you have pundits like Ed Schultz who never criticize the current president, no matter what follies he
may commit, he only demonizes the previous one, again playing to the beliefs of his following. It is
the constant bickering between the people of opposing political ideologies that make the news
difficult for the common man to take with a grain of salt.
Beck often uses what seem to be scare tactics to get of his points across; whereas Schultz is more
likely to give you his own opinion mixed in with some facts to make it all seem completely true.
Neither method is successful in trying to create a balanced news outlet. In fact, the opinions of each
side are grounded so far in the left or right that the middle is impossible to find. I purpose that Beck
should visit MSNBC for a time, while Schultz takes a turn at FNC. Even though the notion of these
dyed in the wool party supporters walking in the shoes of their polar opposites may seem absurd,
but I believe that it would tone both of them down. I hope that it would give each a reality check and
it would bring much needed balance to the cable channels. If the hosts were open to other people's
opinions, no matter how different they were from their own, it would make the American people
feel more trusting toward news people in general and give both extremes a sense of

Case Study Of Matt Lauer
NEWPORT BEACH– Viewers missing Matt Lauer on the Today Show. With 4.7 million people
waking up to Matt Lauer's face on the sunny Today Show there has been breadcrumbs about his
previous sexual encounters. For some time, America's love affair with the young, handsome news
reporter seemed as if he could do no wrong because we loved who he was. High–profile men like
Matt Lauer must be shocked with women coming out and having any strength. Starting at the
beginning of his journey at NBC news in 2001 he already had a sexual relation with an office
employee. Already at the very beginning of the career Lauer was starting his sexual harassment
reputation. That wasn't the only sexual encounter he has had with employees. In 2014 at the Sochi
Olympics he had inappropriate conduct with another employee, yet another one. Many years later
and he still proceeds to participate in inappropriate sexual behavior with his colleagues. How many
instances does it take before it becomes serious? Lauer proved it wasn't a serious issue in his
opinion when in 2016 Meredith Viera found sex toys in his dressing room that he gave to a woman
working in his office. Having Viera find the sex toy and later having a colleague report about Lauer
giving her a sex toy was proof that it wasn't just for his wife who he has been married to the whole
time working at NBC News. But then again woman have no power so it's okay for men to treat them
this way. For all the attention Matt

Analysis Of MSNBC And Fox News
The last and final difficult conversation was a constructive and mind opening experience on the
premise of watching and receiving news. During this conversation, my group watched 20 minutes of
both MSNBC and Fox News and from there we collectively discussed it. Our first showing was
watching Fox News and for me personally it felt like I was watching the tabloids or some might say
a reality show. The reasoning behind my viewpoint of it was of them, the newscaster, talking for a
like a good 10 minutes about donuts and their relationship between the struggle of the acting
directors of Mike Mulvaney and Leandra English of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In
addition, the newscasters are still reporting about President Trump's comment ... Show more content

The only solution that I could think of voiding these differences is either through the elimination
and recreation of new news channel or the moderation of current news channels. Yet, this will
probably not happen because no news channel or person would be the one that blinks first;
everyone, no matter their demographics or background always wants to be right in some way.
The reflection period out of this conversation was for me shocking. As an engaged political person, I
at least try to be engaged with the news. I find that CBS and New York Times are the most reliable
news corporation out there with little to no bias at all, all facts. However, my colleagues find that the
current mainstream news media are becoming either gossip, tabloid, or fake news channels.
Respectively, I take offense to their beliefs on the basis that the news today is fake. Throughout
history, it has been the news and investigative journalism that led to the many stories that
transformed this nation into many shapes and forms. Without the news, a society will be at worst an
anarchist society where nobody trusts each other or a tyrannical society where the populace will fall
for anything that the state displays. It has been an American right of having open news sources, do
Americans want to disregard this right in favor of being handed a silver platter of information from
bias sources? Anyways, going back to

The Influence Of News And Fox News
Being in the twenty–first century, it is almost inevitable to not have media be a major aspect of one's
life. With this in mind, the characters that make this possible are the news outlets who are actively
present in politics and every detail that occurs within the government. Such news outlets include
MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN, who over the past week have reported on the controversy over the
deaths of four American soldiers who were killed by Islamic extremists in Niger. Such controversy
has been receiving great attention from these news outlets due to the Trump administration delaying
any sort of statement towards the attack and fatalities, especially on President Trump, who has not
publicly himself said a word on behalf of this causality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, news stories vary from one to another. In this case, the story written by CNN is more
descriptive as to what occurred, along with criticizing the President and his administration for lack
of attention this event is receiving on their behalf. MSNBC gave a short summary as to what
occurred but made sure to criticize the President for not voicing his concern over this issue,
claiming that he only uses his twitter account for concerns of his interests, but not of those of a
president. Fox News, on the other hand, simply delivered what had occurred regarding the casualty
and briefly touched on the fact that the Trump administration has not made many statements

Trashley Miller Rap Model
Around this time of year, autumn, it is common in America to turn on the television and see an add
claiming to disprove the honesty of a candidate running for governor or questioning a running
senate's integrity regarding their views on politics and spending. It is usually not common, however,
nor is it considered acceptable in the political field to publicly attack a running candidate based on
sex or race. Ashely Miller, a running candidate for State Representative in Kentucky, is arguably a
victim of both. According to MSNBC reporter, Irin Carmon, Miller has been subject to a website
that aimed to paint her as a "rap model" and dubbed her "Trashley Miller". Miller is a 30–year–old
democratic nurse practitioner, who was running for state representative in the state's 32nd district, in

minds as the campaign and supporters behind Miller became stronger. In September, a website
called "Submerge Kentucky" appeared calling Ashley Miller "Trashley Miller," because of her job at
Planned Parenthood and its association with abortion. This website was posted anonymously. Miller
is prochoice and provides options counseling for pregnant women, and other services, but the

Communication Theory and the News
Communication Theory and the News
There are three major cable news outlets and all three seem to have a particular point of view which
is expressed through their coverage of news stories. The three major cable news outlets are:
MSNBC, FOX, and CNN, and each presents a different aspect of the theory of communications as
asserted by scientist and researcher, Joep Cornelissen. In his article, "Toward and Understanding of
the Use of Academic Theories in Public Relations Practice," Cornelissen proposed three models by
which academic theories can be applied to practical situations: "instrumental, conceptual, and
translational. (Cornelissen, 2000, p.316) The three major cable news outlets seem to follow the three
models proposed by Cornelissen in the way they have decided to present the recent death of
Trayvon Martin. While one of these outlets presents Trayvon as a victim of a racist vigilante,
another does everything it can to mitigate the racial issues involved, and the third appears to take a
centered, investigative and emotional view. It is extremely interesting to explore how three different
cable news outlets can present the same story in three very different ways. It was on February 26th
2012 that a 17 year old African American youth named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a
White/Hispanic community watch coordinator, George Zimmerman in Florida. While the facts of
the case are still uncertain, and the trial of George Zimmerman has not yet begun, there has been a

News Stereotypes
The media is the great influencer of how news is perceived and delivered. The way that a reporter
chooses to deliver the news can greatly impact how a person views the world around them. News
stations like FOX News, MSNBC, and CNN have their own audiences that they are appealing to,
and thus, in turn, affect how their viewers perceive the world around them. To begin with, each
News station will tailor their content to the viewers they wish to attract. For FOX News, the very
first headline they chose to broadcast dealt with State Taxes being added to Amazon.com. This
headline was most–likely the opening headline because it shows FOX's conservative viewers how
big businesses were going to be affected by government money. For CNN, this means ... Show more

In the 2016 election, not only were several viewers choosing to watch only one news station, thus
making them ill–informed on a few issues, and biasing them towards the other party, but fake news
stories were circulating around in an attempt to make one candidate look worse than another. The
entire election season seemed to be one accusation after another, and the media seemed to enjoy it.
From Clinton's emails to Trump's tax returns, hashtags such as "#hillaryforprison" and
"#dumptrump" appeared leading to political battles between supporters on either side and a
constantly swaying public opinion on either candidate. In the end, the media was a revelator for the
character, preparedness, and intelligence of each candidate and a country was left

Rhetorical Analysis: Up With Chris Hayes
Comparably, the MSNBC show "Up With Chris Hayes", depends on the guest commentators and his
own achievements in science to appeal to viewers ethos when addressing the issue of global
warming. Although Chris Hayes is not an expert on climate change, his own education and
experience as a journalist garner him enough credibility to offer his opinion to the issue. His
political commentator position does not require him to state his credentials, since many people will
tune in to listen. Hayes also uses guest commentators to who wholeheartedly agree with his ideas.
For example, Hayes introduces Christine Todd Whitman as a governor "who believes in the science,
scientific consensus" ("For April 21, 2012." 3). By stating that the guest is both a political ... Show

MSNBC's audience are liberals and democrats who care greatly about saving the environment from
global warming. Many of the viewers appear to be both in the middle and left wing who are
everyday people who were raised in a more progressive era. Meanwhile, viewers of Fox News are
diehard conservatives who believe wholeheartedly that climate change is a tactic orchestrated by
liberals to take away their political powers. In a sense, it appears as though Fox News appeals to
older and predominantly white, rich males who grew up before the progressive era. Fox News
expressed their personal testimony more openly, which allows them to deflect the attention of the
audience away from the issue, while MSNBC sticks to the topic at hand and supplies a plethora of
statistics for their audience. Fox News logos and pathos appeal is more effect than MSNBC because
they make statements that disturb viewers peace of minds. However, MSNBC is clearly more
effective in winning over their audience due to the highly educated commentators they use to make
their point across. It is apparent after the examination of these four transcripts that broadcast

Essay Deterrence Theory of Crime
Deterrence theory of crime is a method in which punishment is used to dissuade people from
committing crimes. There are two types of deterrence: general and specific. General deterrence is
punishment to an individual to stop the society as a whole from committing crimes. In other word, it
is using the punishment as an example to "scare" society from precipitating in criminal acts. Under
general deterrence, publicity is a major part of deterrence. Crime and their punishments being
showing in the media or being told person to person can be used to deter crime. Specific deterrence
is punishment to the individual to stop that individual from committing other crimes in the future.
This type of deterrence is used to teach the individual a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All things have their problems. Contemporary Theorist believes that, yes deterrence may stop some
people but for other is causes a backlash effect. The authors of Criminology: Explaining Crime and
Its Context explained backlash effect like this, "...stiffer penalties will generate more rather than less
deviance among some segments of the targeted population" (Brown et al., P148, par. 3). A study by
Gary Lafee and some of his colleagues showed how the backlash effect works. They results of their
study showed that deterrence did occur but the backlash effect was much more. This study shows
that punishment might stop some criminals, but not all of them are afraid of punishment (Brown et
al., 2010, p 148–150). Here recently, a story about hate crimes has been in the news. Two men from
Pennsylvania were convicted for beating an "illegal" Mexican to death. The two young men,
Derrick Donchak and Brandon Piekarsky, each got nine years in prison for this hate crime. Both
Donchak and Piekarsky were still in high school when the crime was committed. The men were said
to have beating the Mexican, Luis Ramirez, using racist comment, as he was walking through their
neighborhood. After Ramirez had fallen to the ground, the two Pennsylvania men continued to kick
the victim in the head (CNN, 2011). According to MSNBC (2011), Myesha

Coral Bleaching: A White Death Of The Ocean
A White Death of the Ocean Whenever someone hear about bleaching, they automatically think
about this strong potent chemical used for clothing to make it stain–free, the pungent smell when
they open the door to a pool, or when someone plans on dyeing their hair to a lighter color.
Bleaching is very useful for humans, but is it good for the environment? Has anyone heard of coral
bleaching? Coral bleaching has nothing to do with chemicals at all, in fact it is called coral
bleaching because when coral is bleached, it becomes white like when a t–shirt is bleached (though
too much bleach can eat a hole). Coral bleaching has been a problem these past few years on the

Vice Presidential Debate Over Tim Kaine
Vice Presidential Debate (October 4, 2016)
As the running mates to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump took the stage to further their platform
and earn voters, millions tuned in hopes of further solidifying their choice for President of the
United States of America. The Vice–Presidential debate was moderated by Elaine Quijano, CBSN
anchor and former CNN journalist, who Dan Gainor of FOX claims to have been left from the very
beginning ("Another Debate", 2016). According to numerous articles as well as commentary by
FOX news affiliates, Mike Pence was viewed as the winner of the Vice–Presidential debate over
Tim Kaine by this Conservative news outlet. The focus of much discussion was the numerous
interruptions that occurred throughout the debate resulting in Quijano herself, being spoken over on
multiple occasions. An unofficial Fox News count identified Pence as being interrupted by Tim
Kaine over 39 times where as Kaine was interrupted around 19times by Pence ("Pence Trumps",
2016). Elaine Quijano drew criticism from the conservative identifiers for allowing the debate
format to get out of hand. From the onset of the debate, Tim Kaine stepped into the role of the
aggressor by going after Pence on the hot topics relative to the Trump campaign on items such as
the release of Donald Trump's taxes. FOX news claims that with a factor of 8–1," Quijano peppered

The kind project has made up to 15,000 dollars for students desks, and 7 million total. Lawrence

The Influence Of Fox News

Knowing Your Value, by Mika Brzezinski
Alexandra Holland
Knowing Your Value
"Mine was a truly unconventional path, and I advise you not to walk it yourself" (Brzezinski 9).
Knowing Your Value investigates the unconventional path Mika alludes to in this quote. After her
many years of experience in news casting and being fired from 60 Minutes, she saw her career
opportunities dwindling away. She mentions in the book how she was so desperate that she begged
MSNBC to give her a job, any job (and looking back she regrets her decision to do so). Although
MSNBC allowed her to have a job, it was not the kind of work she imagined herself doing,
especially with the strong skill set she gained over the years. "It was predictable, it was good for the
kids, and it was great to get back in the game, but the work was boring" (Brzezinski 13). Brzezinski,
after only a one–year break from working, had to yet again climb her way to the top. While most of
the time slots she was given to fill were menial, every once in a while she filled in as a substitute for
more sought after roles. Until one day, there was a new opening at MSNBC for a three–hour time
slot (Brzezinski 15). Joe Scarborough saw something in Brzezinski and asked her to be a part of his
new show, which would potentially be a front–runner to gain the position in that three–hour slot.
Although this was a great opportunity there was a lot to think about in regards to if this new job
would be a good fit not only for Mika, but also for her family. "Did I need

Immediately, when I went to CNN.com, I found a link with a picture to see all information, about
the terror strike in Mumbai. Also, there was links where you could click on videos to see how
deadly the situation truly was. CNN.com included things such as: the causalities rates and also how
many people were injured. Furthermore, the site also gives information about how you could link
this story to Facebook, or even Twitter, so that other people could read about what is going on
around the world. With this in mind, this could and would increase CNN.com publicity, making
more people view the top stories as a result. Therefore, CNN.com provided a lot of information and
coverage of the terror strike ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The article did not provide as much information, as CNN.com or MSNBC.com provided about the
bombing in Mumbai. Also, on this website you have the option of leaving comments, email
someone, link the story to Facebook, and even on Twitter. However, there is no other article which
provides, or emphasis into details more about the gruesome terror attack. On Foxnews.com there are
also videos and pictures that could be viewed to show the extent of the damage caused by the
bombing. Furthermore, Foxnews.com provided information about the previous explosions in 2008,
which killed 166 people, during the terror attack. Therefore, this website provided majority of the
same information, but it was just difficult to locate, the article itself. Several things within these
websites, like how they stated the causalities and injured rates, as well as the location. Furthermore,
they also provided pictures and video features of the targeted disaster area. However, these sites
were different in many ways, also. CNN makes the article available to see and view as the top story,
as for MSNBC it bolds the information using color–coded letters for the top stories. On the other
hand, on Fox news you have to actually search through different tabs to locate the article you are
looking for. Also, with this in mind, the

Pushing Too Hard Too Young Summary
Looking at trends associated within fitness and wellness I ran across a very interesting article
entitled "Pushing Too Hard Too Young" written by Jacqueline Stenson for MSNBC (see link below).
This article presents the idea that children at an early age, sometimes as early as three, are being
pushed too hard to play in sports. The claim in this article is that these children are sustaining
unnecessary injuries, and enduring psychological pressure at a higher level than their skill lever for
their age. For these kids training is to the extent, they are required to maintain intense training
schedules and practice year–round or on multiple different leagues in an attempt to develop them for
future fame. On the other hand, this is likely

Donald Trump's Debate Analysis
Sunday October 9th, the second Presidential debate aired generating approximately 66.5 million
viewers to watch the Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump debate the issues. Moderated by Martha
Raddatz and Anderson Cooper the debate was a town hall style with questions coming from
undecided voters, as well as facebook and the moderators. The television programs following the
debate tend to spin the debate in favor of their candiate. I tuned in to Hannity on Fox News on
Monday following the debate. I watched the Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC also on Monsay.
Lastly, I watched the sunday news program Meet the Press with Chuck Todd.

The Greg Gutfeld Show
When Americans attempt to find the truth in the media, it is important Americans realize what bias
each individual media platform has. In the beginning of television, there were only 3 major news
channels. These news networks were: ABC, CBS, and NBC; also known as "Mainstream Media".
The mainstream media held views that aligned with American liberals and seemed to always side
with this group and were the only news stations for Americans to view. Ultimately, since these were
the only news outlets available, whatever views these news stations presented to its watchers, were
the only opinions that the majority of Americans held. However, as time went on cable television
was created and gave Americans additional news networks. In 1980, CNN debuted ... Show more

For example, both news networks tend to politicize mass shootings in an effort to push gun
legislation. These networks use emotion and try to guilt Americans into supporting stricter gun laws
instead of just reporting facts. Not only do both these media outlets try to push its liberal agenda,
CNN and MSNBC also try to diminish its opponents. Americans need to look no further than the
way both news networks portray the republican presidential candidates during the presidential
debates to see the obvious bias mainstream media and cable news networks have. CNN and
MSNBC try to push this belief that all republicans are just old. rich, and white men. This belief
could not be further from the truth. Prior to dropping out of the presidential race, Marco Rubio was
the youngest candidate and also Cuban. Ben Carson is African–American as well as an
accomplished neurosurgeon. As much as mainstream media would like Americans to believe this
faulty stereotype about republicans, these assumptions are completely

Three Different Approaches To Measure Partisan Media...
Judges of the categories have to agree on which items belong in category and which do not. One
would have to make sure that there was a percentage of agreement between the judges. The content
analysis was retrieved from the Project for Excellence in Journalism. The author attempted to
correct the problem of inter–judge reliability by using the overall amount of candidate coverage,
instead of measuring tone. This evidence is empirical, and thus is not subjective by any means.
Finally, the article then transitions to detailing the three specific approaches to measure partisan
media effects during the 2008 election. The article uses three different approaches. Each of the three
approaches is designed in a way to counteract their respective ... Show more content on

Table I provides statistical evidence in support of Hypothesis II and I. Using ordinary least squares
regression the author arrived at the data in Table 1 This indicates that exposure to Fox News
programs would decrease favorability toward Obama early in the election year. On the other hand, it
also indicates an increase in favorability early in the election year when exposed to MSNBC
programs. The second approach utilized variation in Fox News coverage to predict variation in
viewers' attitudes toward Obama. This approach used fixed–effects regression modeling to
formulate Table 2 in the article. This approach was chosen in order to interpret results of the same
individuals at different points in the election cycle. Data was established through summing the total
minutes that each program devoted to Obama during the week prior to the interviewee's interview.
That was then multiplied by the number of minutes each program devoted to Obama by the binary
variable based on the program the respondent selected during the survey. The coverage of all Fox
News programs was summed. This created a measure for Fox News programs that each respondent
viewed throughout the 2008 campaign. An additional MSNBC variable was created as a control
when measuring exposure. One disadvantage in this model is that it is hard to effectively measure
how long a viewer/respondent actually watched a news program. Did they merely catch a glimpse of
the ending? Or did one actually

Freirefire's Analysis
FreireFreire discusses manipulation on page 147 as an instrument of conquest. He states, "By means
of manipulation, the dominant elites try to conform the masses to their objectives. And the greater
the political immaturity of these people the more easily the latter can be manipulated by those who
do not wish to lose their power. " I believe this statement to be valid in the context of our current
political environment. The masses are often manipulated by political parties, the oppressors with the
use of cable news outlets. The conservatives often chose to use Fox News as their vehicle of
manipulation while the liberals choose to use MSNBC or CNN. If a major news story breaks in
relation to the democratic party that can cause a disruption

Baltimore Riots
When it rains, it pours; and where tragedy strikes, a war will follow. This is what comes to mind
when the subject of Baltimore arises. The unexpected death of a young Baltimore man, Freddie
Gray, while in police custody, sparked the flame in the city's ongoing rage and riots. Autopsy reports
showed signs of "high–energy injury "as the cause of death, suggesting neglect from the arresting
officers (New York Times, 2015). When information was leaked of this tragedy, people in the
community were negatively affected, and many began to riot. At this point, the question is not how
to stop the rioting, but how to prevent it?
In order to prevent such a widespread, repetitive tragedy, we must look deep into the roots of a
community. When we break ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is directly linked to the lack of well–paying jobs and education. People in these
underprivileged communities, most of the time, lack the financial stability to be able to achieve a
successful education. Some are forced to drop out of school to work and care for their families
(Beilenson and McGuire, 2012). The US Census did report, from 2009 through 2013, 80.2% of the
population, ages 25 and older, had graduated from high school; 26.8% had achieved at least a
Bachelor's degree (US Census, 2015). Are the riots partly a cry for help from the poor? Maybe this
is the attention that the people of Baltimore think they need in order to show the world of their
deficiencies, especially the city's youth (MSNBC News, 2015). There is also the consideration of
"outsiders" coming into the community to take advantage of a hurting and crumbling city (MSNBC
News, 2015). Most of these "outsiders" are wanting "representation" of the movement for their
lives, using the riots as their voices (MSNBC News, 2015). The rioting is destroying the city of
Baltimore, only receiving negative attention. Instead of helping the community and building a
strong, safe protester union, the unlawful riots are only building distrust, in turn hurting the

American Politics : A Growing Problem For The Political...
Davis, Frost, and Cohen expand on a growing problem in American politics: gridlock. Increasingly
over the last fifteen years or so, Washington has seen what the book calls a "partisan divide". This
means that politics have become so polarized on each side of the aisle, that it has caused a divide on
how the country should be ran. The authors have worked extensively inside Washington over the
last three decades, making this book high accurate on the events that have spiraled and created the
lack of cooperation. They constitute this lack of cooperation on many different issues; including
gerrymandering, money in politics, and the media. I will focus on those four developments as to
what has caused this divide the most. Gerrymandering has been a controversial issue since its
implementation, but the last sixty years has seen the problem because more dangerous for the
political process. What gerrymandering entails is the redrawing of voting districts by state
legislators. It was created to make equal voting numbers in each district, but it has become highly
political over the years. Frost mentions that in 2003 and 2011, Texas legislators used
gerrymandering to pick up two seats in the house. They did this by redistricting Texas so that
minorities had less of an impact in the election, making the state even more 'red' than before. The
reason why this has caused a divide in our government is because it makes some states completely
'red' and others completely 'blue', even though

Matthew Levendusky's What Do Partisan Media Actually Say?
Introduction
Journalists play an important part in the democratic process. Traditionally, the roles of the news
media are to provide a forum for debate, represent opposing perspectives on the day's issues and
hold public officials accountable while serving their constituents. However, in recent decades,
media has given way to biased forms of news– partisan media. In Matthew Levendusky's "How
Partisan Media Polarize America," he explores if these partisan media influences viewers. The
book's second chapter, "What Do Partisan Media Actually Say?" concludes that partisan media
promotes a larger agenda separately to Democrats and Republicans, attack the opposing side while
denouncing compromise, and usually side with their candidate of choice during ... Show more

Hosts, reporters, and commentators dug at President Trump and his administration in almost every
single story aired over the course of an hour and a half. MSNBC host Rachel Maddow eluded that
Trump's alleged ties with Russia "will come out soon," but she omitted the word alleged, a move
that could trigger a slander lawsuit. This framing by both MSNBC and Fox advance a political
agenda. If a media consumer were to watch only one of these outlets, that consumer would hear
only one view on the world. I believe these partisan outlets can cause closed–mindedness and
advocate against those with different beliefs to work together.
Despite being published before the 2016 Presidential Election, Levendusky's book is still relevant
today. In chapter two, he finds that, "while partisan media shows defend their ticket of choice, they
spend just as much–if not more–time attacking the other one." Levendusky recalled news clips from
the 2008 Presidential Election between Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican
Senator John McCain. According to the book, right–wing news outlets called Obama "a tax–and–
spend liberal," while their left–wing counterparts said McCain's vice president pick Governor Sarah
Palin had a lack of

Summary: The Problem With Pre-Election Polls
The Problem with Pre–Election Polls Donald trump won Wisconsin where Clinton had a six point
five percent lead in popular pre–election polls. This is result of multiple factors. One factor is due to
what Democrats have described as "voter suppression". Another factor in Trump's last minute surge
resulted from an increase of white voters coming out to vote that had not voted in previous years.
The percent jump could also be from the electorate not all being accounted for in polls.
Democratic strategist Angela Rye claimed stricter rules for voter registration left people scared to
head to the polling place. "What has been different this particular election, than any other, is voter
suppression," Rye declared Monday on CNN. "And we should talk about that. If you don't want to
talk about a recount, talk about why people felt like they couldn't go to the polls because they were

"Between Clinton and Trump in pre–election polling: 46.8% Clinton + 40.3% Trump = 87.1%. That
means that nearly 13% of the electorate was not reflected in the Clinton vs. Trump pre–election
analysis" (Durkheimer). this shows how the poll numbers could be so far off and accurate at the
same time. To further explain there were no clerical errors, only unaccounted turnout.
Since the inception and massive growth of the 24–hour news cycle, Americans have become more
dependent and reliant on news media outlets for their facts and opinions. While many, if not most,
news stations and their pundits took polling information and assumed a Clinton victory, the news
stations relied too purely on this information and ended up overlooking the closeness of the race.

Positive Effects Of Legalizing Marijuana
According to a MSNBC news article "Marijuana industry sees green after Colorado legalization,"
by Amy Pereira and Gary Cohen, Colorado's legalization of medical and recreational marijuana has
brought upon numerous positive changes. Many have claimed that the legalization of marijuana
would only bring chaos, such as crime, motor incidents, etc. However, crime and motor vehicle
incidents have gone down, while tourism, marijuana tax revenues, and employment are up. New
jobs aren't limited it to growing, there are also jobs as bakers and tour guides that have been created.
Additionally, "The cannabis industry projects roughly $750 million in 2014 sales in a state of only 5
million people." Other states have noticed this positive change as well, causing more to vote for the

Furthermore, the article has even made his own predication that, "Colorado's grand experiment may

marijuana, it also tends to lean toward the side of liberals and democrats. In fact, according to the

Most families tune into their local nightly news station to unwind after their long day of work to

Green Airport lasted the shortest amount of time. The segment referring to the Boy Scouts included
a brief amount of information and then they also included a short video clip of a 16 year old girl
who was advocating for the inclusion in the Boy Scouts. Including the video clip into the segment
led me to believe that FOX supports the historic change. During the weather segment, many
advertisements made an appearance of the bottom of the screen. In general, all of the reporters
spoke quickly and clearly. They did not use any advanced vocabulary, so the general public could
get the most out of the airing. On this particular airing there was not much banter between reporters
or anchors. On FOX's morning news airing, most of the tactics are the same. In the morning, they
broadcasters include more updates on the weather. The graphics are more detailed and the report is
more in depth in the morning. In the morning airing there was much more banter between the
anchors. Also in the morning, stock information and other headlines broadcasted at the bottom of
the screen. There happened to be a lot of different things that promoted positivity, For example,
beautiful pictures of the local sunrises were included in the weather segment. A great example of the
positivity that occurred during the banter was when the meteorologists, Michelle Muscatello, said
"It's going to be a windows closed and kick on the heat kind of a night."(Muscatello).

The Element Of A Narrative Of An Event
The purpose of this study is to determine if partisan news sources differentially utilize episodic or
thematic framing when ascribing blame to elected officials or candidates. The key concepts that are
utilized in the study are presented as follows:
Partisan news: News programing containing a perceived bias toward a liberal or conservative
ideology.
Episodic framing: The presence of a narrative of an event presented in isolation of social context,
emphasizing the action or event itself.
Thematic framing: The presence of a narrative of an event in which social context is the key focus,
with emphasis on contextual and related factors.
Political elites: An individual with assigned or perceived political power, usually an elected official
or candidate.
Variables
The variables that are examined in this study are listed as follows:
News Source: Coded as either Fox News, MSNBC, or CNN
Partisanship of political Elite: Coded as Democrat, Republican, Independent, or not mentioned.
Frame Utilized: Coded as Solely Episodic, Dominantly Episodic, Solely Thematic, Dominantly
Thematic, or No Dominant Frame.
Sample
For this study the population of conceptual interest is partisan news organizations. For the sampling
frame I have selected the three stations of FOX News, MSNBC, and CNN. These three stations
were selected due to their popularity relative to other sources of cable news. MSNBC represents the
channel with a perceived liberal bias and FOX

Credit Card Debt
The economy relies heavily on consumer spending, which it requires people to borrow and go into
debt. The system cannot function if borrowers don't pay up their debts or if they don't have the
amount of money to be able to pay for it. Responsible credit card debt is good for the economy
because it means spending is occurring and the owner can afford to pay for their debt at any time.
The economy suffers when no one is using their credit cards or toward too many people not being
able to pay off their credit card debts. It's an economic cycle that has to be sustained you have to
have consumption, (Moody's, 2013).
Bryan L questions " What would be the long–term effect on our economy if all U.S credit cards was

Media In The 1920's

has always been the problem for the people working in the media. At first newspapers was the
popular way for spreading the news. Then the introduction to the television made newspaper news
absolute, since news can be spreaded out rampant and across different platforms. In the 1920's the
very first media outlets to make a appearance were ABC, CBS, and NBC news. The original three
broadcasted the news to the public, but from a liberal point of view. As it turns out, being focused on
left ideas dominated the mainstream media even with the launch of CNN and MSNBC in 1990

Fox News was founded by an NBC executive who wanted Fox to have different views. In order to
complete the promise made, Fox hired people with different political views, which in the long run

conflict in the end. One group thinks the other is not worthy to talk to and vice versa. Nowadays
more and more people are accessing the internet to stream the news from apps such as Instagram,
Facebook and Twitter, as a way to receive the news much quicker. Although the internet has its
many benefits, it also has its many negatives. For instance, many news stories can be exaggerated
and made up, so finding what's real and what is not is a challenge when getting the news from the

The Philip Defanco Show
For a week I chose to watch and compare The Rachel Maddow Show and The Philip DeFranco

the similar format of one presenter and a skew towards a liberal political stance. These similarities
will allow me to more clearly see a difference in how I consume the content. The format of the show
hosted by Maddow, a cable news show on MSNBC, has remained for the most part, static, it could
have been produced 30 years ago to the same effect through television. Whereas, DeFranco's show
on YouTube would never have been able to exist in its capacity if it were not for the internet. Clearly
marking the distinction between old and new media to me.
I firstly noted that the news stories which were covering by the two sources were mainly different.
While DeFranco skewed more towards pop culture, Maddow was more focused on governmental
events. Both however, covered American politics and events. One intersecting story which occurred

Creators on YouTube are payed based on views, as the more people watch the content the more

Causes Of Bias In The Media

  • 1. Causes Of Bias In The Media Bias in the Media: Cause and effect rough draft While today most americans have access to huge media outlets such as MSNBC and Fox News, They no longer feel the sense of unbiased reporting that honest journalism was built on. It seems that the stories always tend to have a political twist to it. With the public feeling misled, it leaves us not knowing where to turn for the truth. The common perception of the channels is that MSNBC tends to favor Liberal–Democrat ideals. On the other hand, the belief is that Fox News represents the Conservative–Republican ideals. A perfect example was election day, When Donald Trump started to pull away and close out the remaining states to upset Hillary Clinton. The reporters and newscasters on MSNBC looked ... • 2. Fighting Without Knowledge Will Hurt Essay In this era of information overload, our brains are bombarded by so many different news outlets it can be difficult to choose which channel you want to watch. With all the accusations of liberal or conservative bias dominating the feuds between the cable news channels, it would be easiest to choose the channel that we believe best fits our own ideological views. When you look at MSNBC and Fox News the ideologies seem to be completely opposite, but they have some similarities. Both are accused of having either a liberal or a conservative bias and it is not very difficult to tell which side the outlet leans toward, because of their constant bickering back and forth. Fox News Channel may have an abundance of conservative opinion programs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To some this seems absurd, but it is what his base group wants to hear. Whereas on the other side, you have pundits like Ed Schultz who never criticize the current president, no matter what follies he may commit, he only demonizes the previous one, again playing to the beliefs of his following. It is the constant bickering between the people of opposing political ideologies that make the news difficult for the common man to take with a grain of salt. Beck often uses what seem to be scare tactics to get of his points across; whereas Schultz is more likely to give you his own opinion mixed in with some facts to make it all seem completely true. Neither method is successful in trying to create a balanced news outlet. In fact, the opinions of each side are grounded so far in the left or right that the middle is impossible to find. I purpose that Beck should visit MSNBC for a time, while Schultz takes a turn at FNC. Even though the notion of these dyed in the wool party supporters walking in the shoes of their polar opposites may seem absurd, but I believe that it would tone both of them down. I hope that it would give each a reality check and it would bring much needed balance to the cable channels. If the hosts were open to other people's opinions, no matter how different they were from their own, it would make the American people feel more trusting toward news people in general and give both extremes a sense of ... • 3. Case Study Of Matt Lauer NEWPORT BEACH– Viewers missing Matt Lauer on the Today Show. With 4.7 million people waking up to Matt Lauer's face on the sunny Today Show there has been breadcrumbs about his previous sexual encounters. For some time, America's love affair with the young, handsome news reporter seemed as if he could do no wrong because we loved who he was. High–profile men like Matt Lauer must be shocked with women coming out and having any strength. Starting at the beginning of his journey at NBC news in 2001 he already had a sexual relation with an office employee. Already at the very beginning of the career Lauer was starting his sexual harassment reputation. That wasn't the only sexual encounter he has had with employees. In 2014 at the Sochi Olympics he had inappropriate conduct with another employee, yet another one. Many years later and he still proceeds to participate in inappropriate sexual behavior with his colleagues. How many instances does it take before it becomes serious? Lauer proved it wasn't a serious issue in his opinion when in 2016 Meredith Viera found sex toys in his dressing room that he gave to a woman working in his office. Having Viera find the sex toy and later having a colleague report about Lauer giving her a sex toy was proof that it wasn't just for his wife who he has been married to the whole time working at NBC News. But then again woman have no power so it's okay for men to treat them this way. For all the attention Matt ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of MSNBC And Fox News The last and final difficult conversation was a constructive and mind opening experience on the premise of watching and receiving news. During this conversation, my group watched 20 minutes of both MSNBC and Fox News and from there we collectively discussed it. Our first showing was watching Fox News and for me personally it felt like I was watching the tabloids or some might say a reality show. The reasoning behind my viewpoint of it was of them, the newscaster, talking for a like a good 10 minutes about donuts and their relationship between the struggle of the acting directors of Mike Mulvaney and Leandra English of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In addition, the newscasters are still reporting about President Trump's comment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only solution that I could think of voiding these differences is either through the elimination and recreation of new news channel or the moderation of current news channels. Yet, this will probably not happen because no news channel or person would be the one that blinks first; everyone, no matter their demographics or background always wants to be right in some way. The reflection period out of this conversation was for me shocking. As an engaged political person, I at least try to be engaged with the news. I find that CBS and New York Times are the most reliable news corporation out there with little to no bias at all, all facts. However, my colleagues find that the current mainstream news media are becoming either gossip, tabloid, or fake news channels. Respectively, I take offense to their beliefs on the basis that the news today is fake. Throughout history, it has been the news and investigative journalism that led to the many stories that transformed this nation into many shapes and forms. Without the news, a society will be at worst an anarchist society where nobody trusts each other or a tyrannical society where the populace will fall for anything that the state displays. It has been an American right of having open news sources, do Americans want to disregard this right in favor of being handed a silver platter of information from bias sources? Anyways, going back to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Influence Of News And Fox News Being in the twenty–first century, it is almost inevitable to not have media be a major aspect of one's life. With this in mind, the characters that make this possible are the news outlets who are actively present in politics and every detail that occurs within the government. Such news outlets include MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN, who over the past week have reported on the controversy over the deaths of four American soldiers who were killed by Islamic extremists in Niger. Such controversy has been receiving great attention from these news outlets due to the Trump administration delaying any sort of statement towards the attack and fatalities, especially on President Trump, who has not publicly himself said a word on behalf of this causality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, news stories vary from one to another. In this case, the story written by CNN is more descriptive as to what occurred, along with criticizing the President and his administration for lack of attention this event is receiving on their behalf. MSNBC gave a short summary as to what occurred but made sure to criticize the President for not voicing his concern over this issue, claiming that he only uses his twitter account for concerns of his interests, but not of those of a president. Fox News, on the other hand, simply delivered what had occurred regarding the casualty and briefly touched on the fact that the Trump administration has not made many statements regarding the ... • 6. Trashley Miller Rap Model Around this time of year, autumn, it is common in America to turn on the television and see an add claiming to disprove the honesty of a candidate running for governor or questioning a running senate's integrity regarding their views on politics and spending. It is usually not common, however, nor is it considered acceptable in the political field to publicly attack a running candidate based on sex or race. Ashely Miller, a running candidate for State Representative in Kentucky, is arguably a victim of both. According to MSNBC reporter, Irin Carmon, Miller has been subject to a website that aimed to paint her as a "rap model" and dubbed her "Trashley Miller". Miller is a 30–year–old democratic nurse practitioner, who was running for state representative in the state's 32nd district, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She could have been the first black woman in the Kentucky legislature in 14 years. In a quote mentioned in the MSNBC report, Miller states that she thought that the republican candidates and voters may have dismissed her as being a serious threat in the beginning because she was "young and brown". If the republican candidates and voters did in fact think this, they soon changed their minds as the campaign and supporters behind Miller became stronger. In September, a website called "Submerge Kentucky" appeared calling Ashley Miller "Trashley Miller," because of her job at Planned Parenthood and its association with abortion. This website was posted anonymously. Miller is prochoice and provides options counseling for pregnant women, and other services, but the Planned Parenthood where she works in Kentucky does not even provide abortion services. It also put allot of focus modeling career, which included appearing on the cover of a local rap group's mix tape. The website referred to the group, Nappy Roots, as "a popular gangster RAP group." There are similarities with all of the articles' central ideas, but there are differences with the author's craft. In the middle eastern countries, the children do not have the proper education because some of these schools have been blown up by terrorists and also most families have poverty so some put their children to work. • 8. Communication Theory and the News Communication Theory and the News There are three major cable news outlets and all three seem to have a particular point of view which is expressed through their coverage of news stories. The three major cable news outlets are: MSNBC, FOX, and CNN, and each presents a different aspect of the theory of communications as asserted by scientist and researcher, Joep Cornelissen. In his article, "Toward and Understanding of the Use of Academic Theories in Public Relations Practice," Cornelissen proposed three models by which academic theories can be applied to practical situations: "instrumental, conceptual, and translational. (Cornelissen, 2000, p.316) The three major cable news outlets seem to follow the three models proposed by Cornelissen in the way they have decided to present the recent death of Trayvon Martin. While one of these outlets presents Trayvon as a victim of a racist vigilante, another does everything it can to mitigate the racial issues involved, and the third appears to take a centered, investigative and emotional view. It is extremely interesting to explore how three different cable news outlets can present the same story in three very different ways. It was on February 26th 2012 that a 17 year old African American youth named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a White/Hispanic community watch coordinator, George Zimmerman in Florida. While the facts of the case are still uncertain, and the trial of George Zimmerman has not yet begun, there has been a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. News Stereotypes The media is the great influencer of how news is perceived and delivered. The way that a reporter chooses to deliver the news can greatly impact how a person views the world around them. News stations like FOX News, MSNBC, and CNN have their own audiences that they are appealing to, and thus, in turn, affect how their viewers perceive the world around them. To begin with, each News station will tailor their content to the viewers they wish to attract. For FOX News, the very first headline they chose to broadcast dealt with State Taxes being added to Amazon.com. This headline was most–likely the opening headline because it shows FOX's conservative viewers how big businesses were going to be affected by government money. For CNN, this means ... The entire election season seemed to be one accusation after another, and the media seemed to enjoy it. From Clinton's emails to Trump's tax returns, hashtags such as "#hillaryforprison" and "#dumptrump" appeared leading to political battles between supporters on either side and a constantly swaying public opinion on either candidate. • 10. Rhetorical Analysis: Up With Chris Hayes Comparably, the MSNBC show "Up With Chris Hayes", depends on the guest commentators and his own achievements in science to appeal to viewers ethos when addressing the issue of global warming. Although Chris Hayes is not an expert on climate change, his own education and experience as a journalist garner him enough credibility to offer his opinion to the issue. His political commentator position does not require him to state his credentials, since many people will tune in to listen. Hayes also uses guest commentators to who wholeheartedly agree with his ideas. For example, Hayes introduces Christine Todd Whitman as a governor "who believes in the science, scientific consensus" ("For April 21, 2012." 3). By stating that the guest is both a political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... MSNBC's audience are liberals and democrats who care greatly about saving the environment from global warming. Many of the viewers appear to be both in the middle and left wing who are everyday people who were raised in a more progressive era. Meanwhile, viewers of Fox News are diehard conservatives who believe wholeheartedly that climate change is a tactic orchestrated by liberals to take away their political powers. In a sense, it appears as though Fox News appeals to older and predominantly white, rich males who grew up before the progressive era. Fox News expressed their personal testimony more openly, which allows them to deflect the attention of the audience away from the issue, while MSNBC sticks to the topic at hand and supplies a plethora of statistics for their audience. Fox News logos and pathos appeal is more effect than MSNBC because they make statements that disturb viewers peace of minds. However, MSNBC is clearly more effective in winning over their audience due to the highly educated commentators they use to make their point across. There are two types of deterrence: general and specific. General deterrence is punishment to an individual to stop the society as a whole from committing crimes. In other word, it is using the punishment as an example to "scare" society from precipitating in criminal acts. Under general deterrence, publicity is a major part of deterrence. Crime and their punishments being showing in the media or being told person to person can be used to deter crime. Specific deterrence is punishment to the individual to stop that individual from committing other crimes in the future. This type of deterrence is used to teach the individual a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All things have their problems. Contemporary Theorist believes that, yes deterrence may stop some people but for other is causes a backlash effect. The authors of Criminology: Explaining Crime and Its Context explained backlash effect like this, "...stiffer penalties will generate more rather than less deviance among some segments of the targeted population" (Brown et al., P148, par. 3). A study by Gary Lafee and some of his colleagues showed how the backlash effect works. They results of their study showed that deterrence did occur but the backlash effect was much more. This study shows that punishment might stop some criminals, but not all of them are afraid of punishment (Brown et al., 2010, p 148–150). The two young men, Derrick Donchak and Brandon Piekarsky, each got nine years in prison for this hate crime. Both Donchak and Piekarsky were still in high school when the crime was committed. The men were said to have beating the Mexican, Luis Ramirez, using racist comment, as he was walking through their neighborhood. Vice Presidential Debate Over Tim Kaine Vice Presidential Debate (October 4, 2016) As the running mates to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump took the stage to further their platform and earn voters, millions tuned in hopes of further solidifying their choice for President of the United States of America. The Vice–Presidential debate was moderated by Elaine Quijano, CBSN anchor and former CNN journalist, who Dan Gainor of FOX claims to have been left from the very beginning ("Another Debate", 2016). According to numerous articles as well as commentary by FOX news affiliates, Mike Pence was viewed as the winner of the Vice–Presidential debate over Tim Kaine by this Conservative news outlet. She mentions in the book how she was so desperate that she begged MSNBC to give her a job, any job (and looking back she regrets her decision to do so). "It was predictable, it was good for the kids, and it was great to get back in the game, but the work was boring" (Brzezinski 13). Brzezinski, after only a one–year break from working, had to yet again climb her way to the top. While most of the time slots she was given to fill were menial, every once in a while she filled in as a substitute for more sought after roles. Until one day, there was a new opening at MSNBC for a three–hour time slot (Brzezinski 15). Joe Scarborough saw something in Brzezinski and asked her to be a part of his new show, which would potentially be a front–runner to gain the position in that three–hour slot. The second approach utilized variation in Fox News coverage to predict variation in viewers' attitudes toward Obama. This approach used fixed–effects regression modeling to formulate Table 2 in the article. This approach was chosen in order to interpret results of the same individuals at different points in the election cycle. Data was established through summing the total minutes that each program devoted to Obama during the week prior to the interviewee's interview. That was then multiplied by the number of minutes each program devoted to Obama by the binary variable based on the program the respondent selected during the survey. The coverage of all Fox News programs was summed. This created a measure for Fox News programs that each respondent viewed throughout the 2008 campaign. Increasingly over the last fifteen years or so, Washington has seen what the book calls a "partisan divide". This means that politics have become so polarized on each side of the aisle, that it has caused a divide on how the country should be ran. The authors have worked extensively inside Washington over the last three decades, making this book high accurate on the events that have spiraled and created the lack of cooperation. They constitute this lack of cooperation on many different issues; including gerrymandering, money in politics, and the media. I will focus on those four developments as to what has caused this divide the most. Gerrymandering has been a controversial issue since its implementation, but the last sixty years has seen the problem because more dangerous for the political process. What gerrymandering entails is the redrawing of voting districts by state legislators. It was created to make equal voting numbers in each district, but it has become highly political over the years. Frost mentions that in 2003 and 2011, Texas legislators used gerrymandering to pick up two seats in the house. They did this by redistricting Texas so that minorities had less of an impact in the election, making the state even more 'red' than before. This is result of multiple factors. One factor is due to what Democrats have described as "voter suppression". Another factor in Trump's last minute surge resulted from an increase of white voters coming out to vote that had not voted in previous years. The percent jump could also be from the electorate not all being accounted for in polls. In the local news they also include many national stories and topics revolving around our government. For this analysis I watched three airings of a local nightly news station. I watched channel 12, FOX Providence, late night news. In addition to watching their late night broadcasting, I also watched their morning news segment. The last news airing I watched was channel 10, local ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Green Airport lasted the shortest amount of time. The segment referring to the Boy Scouts included a brief amount of information and then they also included a short video clip of a 16 year old girl who was advocating for the inclusion in the Boy Scouts. Including the video clip into the segment led me to believe that FOX supports the historic change. During the weather segment, many advertisements made an appearance of the bottom of the screen. In general, all of the reporters spoke quickly and clearly. They did not use any advanced vocabulary, so the general public could get the most out of the airing. On this particular airing there was not much banter between reporters or anchors. On FOX's morning news airing, most of the tactics are the same. In the morning, they broadcasters include more updates on the weather. The graphics are more detailed and the report is more in depth in the morning. In the morning airing there was much more banter between the anchors. Also in the morning, stock information and other headlines broadcasted at the bottom of the screen. There happened to be a lot of different things that promoted positivity, For example, beautiful pictures of the local sunrises were included in the weather segment. A great example of the positivity that occurred during the banter was when the meteorologists, Michelle Muscatello, said "It's going to be a windows closed and kick on the heat kind of a night."(Muscatello). ... • 35. Hum 176 Week 9 Assignment The biggest breaking story I chose was about the Afghans heading to the polls to vote amid the threats of insurgent attacks. On the CNN website, it seemed like the story was less detailed and descriptive than the other sites. Even though it covered the situation in Afghanistan, the information was delivered in a more passive way than FOXNews and MSNBC, almost as if it was a more opinion–based article. I noticed also that some of the key points that were covered on the CNN site were also covered in the other sites. Information on how many candidates were competing for election and how many seats were available in parliament seemed to be a point that all of the sites included. One main difference in the information that CNN covered, compared ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The story was more descriptive also, using more words to "paint a picture". Less focus was placed on the minor events, such as the governor surviving the bomb, and more towards events directly related to the election, for example, the affect killing 30 civilians had on last year's election. The way the article was presented was somewhat annoying. There were no complete paragraphs throughout the entire article and after almost every sentence, a new line was created. The information though, was put together very well. Each topic led into the other smoothly and details were placed in the right area to support other sentences. The links on this site were the same as the others. There were options to share the article and ads at the bottom of the page. One thing that the FOXNews site had were links that were titled "You Might Also Be Interested ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Comparing News Networks In ABC, CNN, CBS, And Fox The public get their news from networks such as ABC, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC, and Fox. One of the differences between all these networks is all of the networks get fairly amount of viewers from which many of the most popular in the country like to go from right or left. CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC have audiences that lean left while the audience on fox lean toward conservative. Another one is the if these networks are being truthful or if what their telling the audience is fake. A poll by Rasmussen declared that CNN is the least trusted news network on cable television (Tapson 1). The poll also showed that Fox news was trusted at fifty percent and MSNBC was trusted by forty three percent (Tapson 1). One network will telling a viewer how a certain person may have done something bad while another network will the do the same but later show evidence that the information was false. • 37. Credit Card Debt The economy relies heavily on consumer spending, which it requires people to borrow and go into debt. The system cannot function if borrowers don't pay up their debts or if they don't have the amount of money to be able to pay for it. Responsible credit card debt is good for the economy because it means spending is occurring and the owner can afford to pay for their debt at any time. The economy suffers when no one is using their credit cards or toward too many people not being able to pay off their credit card debts. It's an economic cycle that has to be sustained you have to have consumption, (Moody's, 2013). Bryan L questions " What would be the long–term effect on our economy if all U.S credit cards was paid off .. Assuming we stayed debt–free, how would this affect the lenders, banks, and other business (MSNBC, 2013) ? It's difficult to imagine the economy with no credit cards debts. John W. Schoen ,financial writer and senior producer for MSNBC points out that that market mentality it's for the consumers to stay in debt, they don't seem to motivate them or caused fear in them (MSNBC, 2013). • 38. Media In The 1920's n today's world the majority of people rely on the mainstream media to get educated about the events happening all around the world. Getting the news out quick and accurate for people to read, has always been the problem for the people working in the media. At first newspapers was the popular way for spreading the news. Then the introduction to the television made newspaper news absolute, since news can be spreaded out rampant and across different platforms. In the 1920's the very first media outlets to make a appearance were ABC, CBS, and NBC news. The original three broadcasted the news to the public, but from a liberal point of view. As it turns out, being focused on left ideas dominated the mainstream media even with the launch of CNN and MSNBC in 1990 which offered a greater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fox News was founded by an NBC executive who wanted Fox to have different views. In order to complete the promise made, Fox hired people with different political views, which in the long run boosted ratings. The division between being left, libertarian, independent or right only creates conflict in the end. One group thinks the other is not worthy to talk to and vice versa. Nowadays more and more people are accessing the internet to stream the news from apps such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, as a way to receive the news much quicker. • 39. The Philip Defanco Show For a week I chose to watch and compare The Rachel Maddow Show and The Philip DeFranco Show. I had chosen to compare the two because they are both personality driven news shows, with the similar format of one presenter and a skew towards a liberal political stance. These similarities will allow me to more clearly see a difference in how I consume the content. The format of the show hosted by Maddow, a cable news show on MSNBC, has remained for the most part, static, it could have been produced 30 years ago to the same effect through television. Whereas, DeFranco's show on YouTube would never have been able to exist in its capacity if it were not for the internet. Clearly marking the distinction between old and new media to me. I firstly noted that the news stories which were covering by the two sources were mainly different. While DeFranco skewed more towards pop culture, Maddow was more focused on governmental events. Both however, covered American politics and events. One intersecting story which occurred during the week was that of Elizabeth Warren, the senator who was silenced during a debate on the nomination of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... YouTube uses a similar model as television, advertisements, but in a completely different form. Creators on YouTube are payed based on views, as the more people watch the content the more advertisers are interested in investing, but this model is fluctuating and unreliable. To build a more sustainable model, many creators turn to alternative forms of revenue. Philip DeFranco, for example, has built a business model on selling merchandise, acquiring his own sponsors and working with a larger multimedia company, Discovery Network. Therefore, in a sense new media is still very much financially reliant on old–media.
