Communicable diseases cannot be
transferred from one person to another.
FACT BLUFF
Pathogens are harmful organisms.
FACT BLUFF
Bacteria can make people sick.
FACT BLUFF
Convalescence Phase refers to the time
between the exposure to the pathogen and
the appearance of the signs and symptoms
of the disease.
FACT BLUFF
One way to avoid communicable diseases is
by maintaining a clean environment.
FACT BLUFF
COMMUNICABLE
DISEASES AND
STAGES OF
INFECTION
1. Define communicable diseases.
2.Explain the different stages of
infection.
3. List ways on how to prevent
and control communicable
diseases.
It is known as infectious diseases or
transmissible diseases.
Communicable diseases or infections
are caused by pathogens or infectious
agents.
Single-celled microorganisms that
can be spherical, rod, or spiral in
shape. Bacteria cause infections
such as Tuberculosis, Pneumonia,
Tetanus, Food Poisoning.
An organism smaller than bacteria.
It cannot live and multiply on its
own, so it needs a living cell to
reproduce and invade other healthy
cells. They cause Colds, Coughs, Flu,
Chicken Pox, Covid.
Simple organisms that cannot make
their own food. Many live on dead
animals, insects and leaves. Fungi
cause infections such as Ringworm,
Athlete’s foot, and Jock Itch.
Single-celled organisms that are
larger than bacteria. They are most
common in tropical areas that have
poor sanitation. They cause Malaria
and Amoebiasis.
Worms are long and cylindrical
animals with no limbs and no eyes.
Some worms that cause diseases in
humans are threadworms,
roundworms, tapeworms, and
hookworms.

STAGES
OF
INFECTIO
N
The time between the exposure to the
pathogen until the appearance of the first
sign and symptom of the disease.
It refers to the period the infection starts
to show signs and symptoms.
It is characterized by active onset of the
disease and fast multiplication of the
involved pathogen.
Infection has reached its highest
productivity and rate of production and
infection slows down.
Lisa went to the market to buy “Tilapia” for the
“Sinanglay” that she will cook for dinner and forgot
to wear her facemask. After 3 days, she was not
able to go to work because she had a fever. The next
day, she went to the doctor for check up because she
experienced loss of smell. After going to the doctor
she was tested and confirmed positive with Covid-
19. Lisa experienced muscle pain, cough and fever.
She stayed in the hospital for isolation to avoid the
spread of the disease. After few weeks, Lisa feels
better and was discharged from the hospital.
