How To Write An Essay On Half The Sky Turning Opportunity...
Women's Rights are Human Rights
Women. This word creates an image– an image of a mother, a sister, a daughter. Women are of the
basics part of life, they are essential not only to society, but to the human species. Therefore, women
should be treated with equal importance and given the same rights regardless of gender. Society has
come a long way since 1920 and giving women the right to vote. However, there a parts of the world
where women are treated unequally in respect of men and are fighting for that equality– a basic
human right. Women especially in the developing world struggle with unjust inequalities. Common
abuses that claim women are sex trafficking and forced prostitution; gender–based violence,
including honor killings and mass rape; and maternal mortality. Reportage and storytelling of these
horrible abuses are combined in the nonfiction book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into
Opportunity for Women Worldwide, where Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn argue that the
oppression of women is the worst current global issue that calls for change.
Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide was published in 2009,
after Kristoff and WuDunn spent an abundance of time abroad volunteering. While both authors
were researching for their book, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The consequences of these abuses result in human pain and suffering. Kristof and WuDunn wanted
to inform their audience on the severity of the matter at hand. Through statistical alongside
anecdotal evidence, the authors were able to inform their audience on an unfamiliar topic by
breaking down the problem into segments while building a personal connection through stories. This
reportage exposes the injustices women face and makes a call for change to help this humanitarian

Feminism In Sheryl Sandberg

have different views on it, but most feminist can agree on is that women need to move up in the

author of "Lean in: What Would You Do If You Weren't Afraid?" both explore. Even though it might
appear that Bell Hook's and Sheryl Sandberg agree that women should be more proactive in their
workplace, on a closer look, they actually disagree about the type of people who should be taking
the advice, seen through Bell Hook's criticism of Sheryl Sandberg. Bell Hook's criticism of Sheryl
Sandberg is seen through her analysis of Sheryl's social status and wealth. Bell Hook's analysis of
Sheryl Sandberg's wealth and social status gives the reader a better understanding of how "Sandberg
effectively uses her race and class power and privilege to promote a narrow definition of feminism
that obscures and undermines visionary feminist concerns" (662). If you didn't know Sheryl
Sandberg is worth about 1.6 billion dollars and has one of the highest positions in the most popular

Equal Rights For Women
Equal rights for women has been in an ongoing conversation throughout America, especially when it
comes to the workforce. Equal pay and opportunity has been fought for, for many years. But can the
workforce really be equal if the women do not do their part to strive and stay in work? In Sheryl
Sandberg's Ted Talk "Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders" she discusses the topic of how
women can rise to the top and become leaders in the world by staying in their line of work. She
explains that although equality for women has progressed, leadership positions often lack female
occupants. (Sandberg, 2010, page 12) She backs her statements using logos as she goes farther into
detail by sharing statistical data. Sandberg gives three fairly simple ... Show more content on

Being a young woman myself I have personally struggled with this as well as seen many of my
friends struggle with this. There has been many times where I left a test or showcase tournament
knowing I failed to do the best I could when in doubt I did just fine. I believe this to tie into an
underlying self esteem issue women face. According to Colleen Slaughter (2016), "In a KPMG
Women's Leadership study, 67% of women said they needed more support building confidence to
feel like they can be leaders." This statistic shows that women lack the self confidence to "sit at the
table". In order for women to become top leaders in industries they must first find their confidence
within themselves.
As Sandberg begins to discuss her second rule, make your partner a real partner, there are many
obstacles that one could face which might make following them impractical. She also neglects the
fact the some households differ. In her Ted Talk, one can come to the conclusion that she is
advertising to the families that have a mom and a dad. In fact Sandberg specifically states (2010,
page), "If a woman and a man work full time and have a child, the woman does twice the amount of
housework the man does, and the woman does three times the amount of childcare the man does."
Sandberg fails to include a version of rule number two that would be attainable for nonheterosexual
woman as well as single parents. According to Gretchen Livingston (2014),

American Studies Class Analysis
One of my most memorable learning experiences occurred this year in my American Studies class.
As a part of the class my teacher, Mr. Blahnik, had agree and disagree topics about current issues in
today's society. During this process, differences of ethics and morals clashed, but at the same time it
was beneficial to envision what another is picturing an issue. In addition, it taught how the same
facts that two people build their interpretation of replies completely on the interpretation of each
individual. This knowledge on how everything was based on interpretation allowed me to be
rewarded with more confidence in my response. As a student who moved to Sturgeon Bay High
School just a school year ago, it was nerve racking to be strong in my believes not knowing the
basics of what my peers would think. Moreover, this experience making me confident in my ability

Half The Sky Part II : Turning Oppression Into Opportunity...
The documentary, Half the Sky Part II: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide
(2012), is based off of a book written by Nicolas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. The setting of this
documentary is in three poor countries, Kenya, Somaliland, and India. This is a nonfictional
documentary where maternal mortality, prostitution, and economic empowerment tend to be
common constant struggles in many developing countries. Kristof and WuDunn travel with three
talented celebrity activist to witness these struggles first hand and helped spread global awareness.
These celebrities come face to face with three passionate women in each country who fight daily to
make a difference and change women's inequality in their countries. Women in these countries and
in many other countries deal with maternal mortality, sex trafficking, violence, and discrimination
threats every day. Some women do not know different and are lead to believe this is their destine
while others are frightened and are begging for change. Although, these countries are on different
parts of the map they have common struggles due to common causes. Maternal mortality,
prostitution, and economic empowerment become global struggles due to lack of education and
financial ability of both the country itself and individuals living in these countries. Families are
following a pattern by neglecting to dedicate time, attention, and money to their children's
education. These people are living in the moment and do not

Overcoming Racism: A Theme Of Discrimination
When faced with fear, humans have two options: fight or flight. Whichever one comes naturally
says a lot about a person. If someone is confronted by something that can hurt them and others
around them, an otherwise caring person might become an untamed monster in the race to save
themselves before anyone else. Although fear can be a paralyzing experience, it is important to keep
your identity and stand by what you believe in no matter what. Even if remaining true to your
beliefs means you end up with nothing left, you still have hope, and hope can overpower anything.
The human race is separated into groups whether we like it or not. Some of these groups face severe

Personal Narrative: Creating Pfu Internship
Welcome back everyone. It seems like I had only just started researching down at the lab, but it has

an end. Thankfully, I was successful in my endeavors to synthesis a thermostable DNA polymerase,
in this case pfu, but there was still so much more I could have done with it. Creating the pfu was
only the first step, there was still so much more testing I could have done, whether it be comparing it
to an actual company made pfu or figuring out more specifics for my pfu. Nonetheless, I still
succeeded and had fun. Nothing terribly exciting happened this week. I worked more on my

Sheryl Sandberg's Criticism Of 'Lean In'
In 2013, Sheryl Sandberg released the best – selling novel, Lean in, that calls on professional
women to "lean in" by aiming for leadership positions in their jobs and examines what factors
prevent woman from doing so. Last year, her non – profit organization launched a public awareness
campaign, Lean In Together, or #LeanInTogether, to partner with the NBA and WNBA. This
campaign was focused on men's roles in reaching gender equality. However, the book and campaign
has faced its criticism. Reviewers have deemed the book too narrowly focused on women like
Sandberg who are educated, white, and provided with opportunities out of the reach of an average
female. Other critics have questioned Sandberg's relevant guidance to the average woman, since ...

I choose FIFA because of the giant inequality gap between the men and the women. LeanIn is
designed the bring men and women together, and FIFA should embrace this as it's been proven that
there is a big audience for women's soccer. 26.7 million viewers watched the 2015 FIFA Women's
World Cup Final. However, women's soccer is not treated equally with the men. Sepp Blatter is on
record saying that women players should wear short shorts to gain more viewers. Also, the women
World Cup games were played on artificial turf causing opposed to the men who played on grass,
and men's games are given incredible investment and promotion, that the women do not receive.
The FIFA LeanIn program would heavily emphasize promoting the women as equal to the men.
Giving the women players the same type of investment given to promoting the men can go a long
way to driving interest and attendance for the women. To further promote this movement, men's
leagues such as the Premier League can invoke a uniform change where players wear jersey badges
that promote the LeanIn campaign along with placing banners around the field. Without heavily
investing into equal rights and equipment, the gap between the men and women will never

Why Men Still Can 't Have It All By Richard Dorment
In the essay "Why Men Still Can't Have It All" by Richard Dorment, the topic of equality in the
genders is explored. This topic includes various aspects of the lives of men and women, including
work in and out of the home. Dorment responds to other opinions and viewpoints and explains why
"no one can have it all." He brings up many convincing arguments that show why the feminist push
for equals rights for women is not producing the outcome that people want it to have. I agree with
what much of Dorment is saying in this essay, and the following paragraphs will explain Dorment's
argument.
To start the essay, Dorment asks the question of whether it is better to be born a boy or a girl in
today's society. He says it is a toss–up, and gives a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, Dorment says that one's feelings cannot be used as evidence of an injury. He also gives an
example from his own life. He and his wife share laundry duty, but when he folds the laundry, his
wife does it again. When he asks why she does this, she tells him he folds the laundry wrong. He
makes the point that women want to be helped and supported more around the house, but tell men
that they are doing things wrong. I can see where Dorment is coming from with these points. In
today's society, people base too many arguments on feelings, instead of facts, truth, and evidence.
The feelings of expectations for the house are not men's fault, nor are men the cause for women's
hardship in this area.
Men and women also have different opinions and reactions to leaving the house for work, Dorment
says. Men today want to be better fathers than men in previous generations, men still feel like they
have to provide for the family, even if they have wives that bring in forty–five percent of the family
income (Dorment 709). This is why men feel as though they can work long hours away from home.
They feel as though they are sacrificing time with their kids to provide for the family (even though
they may still miss their kids). Women, Dorment points out, have a different reaction to leaving their
kids to go to work. They feel guilty and experience

Effects for Obesity

Introduction. Obesity, once thought to be a little more than an unfortunate failure of will and self
restraint, has much deeper and more complex roots. Genes clearly plays a role in driving an
individual's propensity to gain excess weight, as does environment. Early–life influences, beginning
with the intrauterine environment and continuing through the first few years of life, also shape the

Should specialized organization be made for workers who wish to have a career and raise a child?
Identify steps that companies can take to accommodate parental needs more effectively.
In 2013, 88.2 percent of families with children under 18 had at least one parent in the workforce,
which means the employers seeking to recruit and retain top talents must start catering to the
families engaged in this balancing act.
With the focus on the working American parent with benefits such as a flexible working hours paid
parental leave for the men and women will achieve a better working life balancing and keep
employees happier and more engaged at work. Not only should flexible schedule benefit the women
but the men should also receive the option. The division of household labor has changed a lot in the
last few decades, with many fathers taking primary caregiver role for their kids. Over 50 percent of
fathers said they find it difficult to juggle work responsibilities and family life.
There are steps that a companies should focus on when creating a flexible working environments.

In the article " Lean In: What Would You Do If You Weren't Afraid " written by Sheryl Sandberg, a

notwithstanding staying at home to be a mother. Discuss how a woman should have it all, a
profession, a family, and an education, but society consequently made women feel as though they
aren't made to finish such things. She cites Judith Rodin, President of Rockefeller Foundation: "My
generation fought so hard to give all of your choices. We believe in decisions. But choosing to leave
the workforce is not something we thought so many of you would make "(645). Ladies should work
40 hours per week and return home and deal with their children, essentially working a second full–
time work. This brought on numerous women to lessen their hours or leave the workforce. Sheryl

are discouraged from exhibiting "(646). Sheryl contends that there are more men going after top ...

Girl Girls Who Code Sheryl Sandberg
"Leaning in" is a phrase Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook, uses to encourage
women to pursue their ambitions and change the conversation from what they can't do to what they
can. One unsuspecting spring afternoon, I learned just how important that phrase was. It was that
fateful day, where the transient spring air was just morphing into summer, that I truly understood
what it meant to 'lean in', take initiative, and pursue my aspirations with a perfervid zeal. I have
always had a passionate interest in technology, from the very first time I was introduced to a
rapidly–growing phenomenon called coding. It both fascinated and perplexed me; numbers and
letters, pixels on a shiny screen, amalgamating together to produce something awe–inspiring.

The Girl Effect : Nicholas D. Kristof And His Wife Sheryl...
Tragedies occur every day around the world. Just as it seems, hearing of the tragedies may be
overwhelming to listen to because there are so many occurrences to keep track of. In the essay "The
Girl Effect," Nicholas D. Kristof and his wife Sheryl WuDunn are journalists who relocated to
China from the U.S. to pursue their careers. They come to find out about how neglected we've been
to certain quotidian cruelties that take place in foreign counties specifically relating to the unfair
treatment of women and girls. In this essay "On Habit," Alain de Botton may refer to this blindness
as a "home mindset" where we pay very little detail of what surrounds of because we've become
habituated to the everyday occurrences. Kristof and WuDunn write their essay in order to expose
those quotidian cruelties certain cultures have become habituated in their home mindsets. De Botton
might have suggested inheriting a "travelling mindset" for those people who lived in the cultures
where the tragic cruelties and are stuck in their home mindsets. A travelling mindset includes
integrating receptivity which is the main difference between a home mindset and a travelling

Half the Sky is a book aiming to be more than just an entertaining story for the reader it is more than
just journalism, Half the Sky is a book that is intended to outline a problem and convince its readers
to take action to solve it. The book is consisted of a series of essays and short stories which forms
two major parts to the book. The first part of the book argues that the oppression and mistreatment
of women is evident mostly in third world countries and is becoming more and more devastating by
the moment. The first part also describes the under– recognized aspect of the problem and highlights
the injustices that are almost are as equivalent to slavery. The second part is what makes ... Show

Comparing the issue of sexual slavery to slavery makes the issue even more complicated as there are
key differences to highlight. Slavery started off as a legal action and was fully acceptable throughout
whole nations, then came the moral risers, the abolitionists, who focused on arguing that slavery
should become illegal. They succeeded eventually and once it was illegal, the trade of slaves
stopped. In the case of sexual slavery, nowhere in the world is rape and enforced sexual slavery
actually a legal action. The problem with the legality issue, and several of the stories mentioned by
the authors make this point very clear, is the unconcern and corruption of the authorities in fighting
the issue. Moreover, the silence of the victim, who once goes public with the ordeal, is publicly
humiliated and ashamed makes it even harder to combat and battle. Last but not least, the lack of
schooling and education plus the lack of medical care for women often reflects most families'
ignorances of the economic potential of healthy, educated women. Given all the circumstances
surrounding the issue and the context in which the problem is situated, the authors call upon the
supporting of individuals they call in Half the Sky, "social entrepreneurs," just like Mukhtar Mai,

Moving Forward
I've often experienced feelings of regrets because of risks I have taken or not taken and words I have
said or left unsaid. I sometimes think about how I will deal with these in my future life and how I
will cope with grief and other emotions as I grow older. In her book, Option B, author Sheryl
Sandberg helps me deal with moments like these. She states, "Of the hundreds of answers, most had
one thing in common: the majority of regrets were about failure to act, not actions that failed.
Psychologists have found that over time we usually regret the chances we missed, not the chances
we took. As my mom often told me when I was growing up, 'You regret the things you don't do, not
the things you do' " (Sandberg 145). The lasting impression that this narrative will leave with
readers includes having no regrets, living life to its fullest, and grieving is a natural emotion.
Sandberg discusses how to live life without regret and deal with grief as a natural emotion that
everyone will experience.
When a person loses a loved one, the hardest emotional phase that we experience is grief. Within
grief, regret is common by remembering the opportunities that have been lost. Sheryl Sandberg
states, "I thought constantly about how if I'd known that Dave and I had only eleven years, I
would've made sure we spent more time together. I wished that in the hard moments in our marriage,

Essay on Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead by...
Lean In: Women, Work and The Will To Lead, by Sheryl Sandberg, addresses how women can
achieve professional achievement and overcome the lack of leadership progress that has been absent
over the past few years. Sandberg uses personal experience, research and humor to examine the
choices that working women make everyday. She argues that women can achieve professional goals
while still being happy within their personal lives. She argues this by going into detail about what
risks to take, how to pursue certain professional goals and how to overcome struggles such as
balancing a family and a career. All through Lean In, Sandberg uses the fourth dimension of

Also revealed is her evaluation of people and their behavior and relationships in the workplace. She
evaluates how men describe their success and how their success is accepted much better then when
women achieve success. This creeps into gender expectations within communication because when
women speak on their success they will relate it back to others instead of taking the credit for
themselves (Sandberg, 30). She admits that she has been at fault of doing this but it is something
that needs to change similar to people view gender bias.
Gender bias has continued to be constructed in communication through marked forms. In Lean In,
Sheryl Sandberg discusses, "When people talk about a female pilot, a female engineer, or a female
race car driver, the word "female" implies a bit of surprise"(Sandberg, 140). If everyone continues
not to discuss gender bias then the world will continue to use marked forms, which Sandberg sees as
a tool for people to be–little others (Sandberg, 140). She concludes this thought by saying "We can
no longer pretend that biases do not exist, nor can we talk around them. The result of creating a
more equal environment will not just be better performance for our organizations, but quite likely
greater happiness for all"(Sandberg, 158).

she provides examples of gender expectations within

Gender Inequality In Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In
Sheryl Sandberg's book Lean In tries to argue and persuade women that the best way to change
gender inequality starts with changing themselves. Her argument requires women to take the
initiative and change their own lives before bothering to transform the system and other outside
forces. Sandberg is not successful in her argument because her privilege and power in the workforce
make it so her argument is only relevant to a small percent of the population, and thus, while not
invalid, not as relevant as it could be.
She is very privileged, and it shows in her writing. She is a white, wealthy, and among the most
privileged members of our society. This is where she is coming from, and it is not a place most
Americans can understand. Most of the time she seems unaware of this privilege as it hardly ever ...

On one hand, the way it is written makes the book very accessible for people to read and understand.
But it is really geared for white, corporate women. This leaves out the large chunk of the population
who are not white and/ or are not working in the corporate world, especially those who work
minimum wage jobs or jobs that are lower on the totem pole. This, in turn, undermines Sandberg's
argument and her assumption that her book will work for everyone.
Sandberg structures her book so she has a lot of personal anecdotes that she uses to try to get her
point across and to invoke pathos. However, her stories are not relatable: most of the population
cannot begin to imagine walking up to the founders of Google, addressing them by their first name,
and making demands that are acknowledged addressed, crying on Mark Zuckerberg's shoulder, or
even going to a school like Harvard (Sandberg 4, 88, 29). This in a way distances Sandberg from

What Women of This Generation Will No Longer Take? As a woman living in a globally thriving
society, one may contemplate women's rights as not being a problem anymore, that humans' rights
relate to every single gender, but sadly this is not yet true. Women have fought in the constant battle
of gaining equal rights as their opposing gender for decades. Though times have gotten a lot better
since the era of the Victorian Age, today women have not given up their focus on equal rights and
how society should treat them. We read regularly and are given the opportunity to be aware of the
violences women face within their homes, working areas, and sometimes sadly in areas of worship.
Society has allowed for such incidents against women to become a "social norm," an action that is
wrong, but can just slide through the cracks. But there is one question that lingers through the minds
of the victims of society today, "do we surely apprehend and respect the rights of women?"
Unfortunately the answer is no for a majority of women with our society, instead of calling on the
conversation of action, society continually deprives women of equal pay, harassment of women at
work, and domestic violence. These practices are some of the shameful works and demonstrations
witnessed in our society that are to be eradicated from our civilization. In our modern society,
women have reached the new heights of success within the business corporate setting, however,
society still is in dire need for

The Work Force, By Sheryl Sandberg Essay
Regardless if she is a housewife or a woman who works a 9–5, she is still under the dominance of a
man when it comes to the term "work." At home, she is the caregiver but he is the bread provider. In
the work force, she is the assistant and he is the one calling all the shots. If she is fortunate enough
to hold a high ranked position, it is almost evident that she does not have the same voice as a man
that holds the same position. Unfortunately, this is the reality for most women, but some women
have broken through these boundaries and excelled in the high ranked position in the work force.
One woman in particular is Sheryl Sandberg. She the current CEO of Facebook and a mother to a
little boy and girl. With a higher view on this, Sandberg recognizes the issues of the wage gap,
gendered division of labor, social comparable worth, and second shift in her book, Lean In: Women,
Work, and the Will to Lead, and her TedTalk and advises women to advocate for themselves in order
to achieve equality the workplace.
One of the first issues Sandberg addresses is the glass ceiling. Glass ceiling is this unacknowledged
barrier that prevents advancement in a profession. Shining some light on this issue, Sandberg shares
with the crowd a moment of embarrassment she experienced after one of her presentations. While
presenting to an audience, see allows the crowd to ask two questions before she proceeds with her

Lean In: Women, Work, And The Will To Lead By Sheryl Sandberg
Book review of Lean in
Abstract:
Women in most part of the world have been told to behave in a certain way and are expected to
behave in a certain way. With Sheryl Sandberg talking about her experiences and how she chose to
be different, it's a relief with a lot of pride to have someone so powerful speak about it. Wearing
several hats of a daughter, girlfriend, friend, wife, mother and so on she has successfully showed us
how we need to lean in. She tells us how we must stand up for ourselves. She speaks about her
mother and grandmother who were her icons. Part inspirational/ self–help and a corporate guide
,Facebook coo Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead is a brilliant book for
both men and women. Women have long been told how to be best in the roles they are biologically
supposed to be doing. However, they must stand to question these fallacies, they must stand to
demand better rights and expect to not be stereotyped. This is what Lean In takes us through.

Performance Enhancing Drugs is a Global Issue
A major issue in today's world is drug in sport. The reason why drug in sport is a global issue is
because many athletes in the world use performance enhancing drugs and influence others to use
these drugs because of their success. An issue is a disagreement between two or more parties in a
public forum. Many people disagree with others about the topic, 'Drug in sport.' Some people
believe that performance enhancing drugs make sport far more interesting and competitive. They
believe this because they love to see records being broken, unbelievable finishes to games and the
suspense of who will win. Other people believe that this does not make sense and that drugs take
away from the meaning from sports. If drugs were to be used in sports then we would not have the
special people like Cristiano Ronaldo and Usain Bolt, two spectacular athletes who work very hard
to gain as much success as possible. Research shows that more people think that drugs should not be
used in sport and I agree with them because without drugs it shows us how important hard work and
a good attitude is, to be successful.
Drug in sport can be classified as a 'Type I' issue. A 'Type I' issue is an issue that occurs locally but
happens globally. Many people in different countries take performance enhancing drugs so that they
can be the best. When they are the best they become idols for almost everyone and huge impact on
their lives. When there caught using performance enhancing drugs it makes everyone

The Time Of A Traditional Family
Entering the home of a traditional family, the youngest children are in the living room watching
television, arguing over the channel, as the oldest sibling is their room because they recently got
suspended from school, and the dog is drinking out of the toilet bowl. In the meantime, the mother is
the kitchen preparing dinner and setting up the dinner table. As she listens to the children arguing,
the laundry timer goes off, and then her husband walks in from work. Now, not every home is as
chaotic as this one, but even so, the woman was expected to handle each of these situations within
the home and have everything prepared for her husband. Motherhood and housework were the most
significant roles and positions of women in society. Rarely, would women have any type of
education compared to the men. Overtime, women have conquered much of the challenges faced by
the oppression in society, but not all. Gaining the rights to vote, receiving an education, working
under for any occupation they chose to, etc. Although, there is still some sort of dominance and
power that men have over women within every aspect of society; issues like gender and wage gap,
gendered division of labor, second shift, glass ceiling, and many more are still prominent in society.
Sheryl Sandberg, in her book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, and in a Ted talk argues
about all the issues women face and how women do not insist on their fair share in the home or
working community. Sandberg

Sheryl Sandberg's Aspects Of Gender Inequality In Children
The passage What would you do if you weren't afraid, starts out with the author (Sheryl Sandberg)
talking about her grandmother back in the 1900s who got taken out of school to help her mom
financially. Meanwhile, her brother was still in school. Later in the passage she explains how her
grandparents parent decided to make her grandmother go back to school, and her grandmother
ended up graduating from U.C. Berkeley. She ended doing bigger and better things that most girls
during that time period couldn't. Sheryl also goes to talk about how till this day there's still gender
inequality. In the United States and even in other countries we are still living with gender inequality
in many different form like in the family, the workplace, and even when it comes to education.
Gender inequality tend to occur in the family. Many people may not pay attention to this but it
happens all the time. Back in the days during the early 1900s girls were taken out of school to stay
home and take care of the house. While, the guys would go to school, and work. Sheryl even shows
an example of this in the passage it states " During the depression, my grandmother was pulled out
of Morris High School to help support the household by sewing fabric flowers onto undergarments
that her mother could resell for a tiny profit. No one in the community would have considered taking
a boy out of school. A boy's education was the family's hope to move up the financial and social
ladder." This just shows how

TEDWomen talk is 14 minutes and 58 seconds in length.
III. How does this presentation fit into the class? Why is it important? (250 words strongly
suggested)
This presentation fits into the class because we discussed in great depths about the wage gap that our
society has between men and women in the workplace. Sandberg makes more than the average male
her net worth in 2016 was 1.39 billion dollars. It is important that men and women start being
treated equally. Sandberg discusses the issue of why there are only a few women leaders and how to
keep women in the workforce to create more leaders. She also talks about how women should act
and how society should be treating them. It is important that she addresses these issues because the
wage gap not just in America but also all over the world is a huge issue. Right now women working
full–time earn 81 percent of what full–time workingmen make. There is a 19 percent wage gap
between men and women. It's 2016 we need to live in a society where both men and women have
equal chances in the workplace and we should more commonly see women in positions of power in
all different sectors of the work field. Women who are just as qualified, and work the same hours, as
men shouldn't be paid 4 dollars less than men to do the same job. The wage gap needs to be getting

Compare And Contrast The Yellow Wallpaper And Half The Sky
Both "The Yellow Wallpaper" and Half the Sky imply women should be freed from oppression and
inequality. However, each text approaches the problem of oppression in a different way. While both
"The Yellow Wallpaper" and Half the Sky underscore how women are constrained physically and
emotionally within a male–dominated society, the stories diverge in how they understand this
oppression. In "The Yellow Wallpaper" the narrator's relationship to her bedroom's wallpaper and
her descent into mental illness symbolize the social danger of misogyny, even if it is well intended.
But in Half the Sky gender inequality is expressed through actual cases of physical and sexual
violence. In these nonfiction stories the YW is fiction??, the writers show that, despite extreme
brutality and violence, women in the developing the YW is in the "developed" world––though it
takes place in the past. world are capable of living a fulfilling and productive life. While both texts
agree that women should be free, the writers differ in how they express the experience of oppression
and the reasons it should be ended.
"The Yellow Wallpaper" is written from the perspective of a woman who is diagnosed by her
physician–husband as having "a slight hysterical tendency." The story is from her first–person
perspective of this "temporary nervous depression." Her husband John loves her, but is
condescending: "He is very careful and loving and hardly lets me stir without special direction"

Sandberg on the Difference between Men and Women in the...
When you think of high power names in the workplace it's more often than not associated with men.
In fact, statistics show that of the top corporate jobs in America only 15% are held by women.
What's even more startling is that of all the fortune 500 CEOs only twenty–one of them are women
(Sandberg, 2013). These eye–opening statistics show that although women have made great strides
in the workplace throughout the years one question remains; Why are there not more women in
leadership positions? Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook chief operating officer and author of Lean In:
Women, Work, and the Will to Lead examined the causes of this halt in progress and the possible
solutions.
The first idea that Sandberg mentions in her book revolves around women underestimating their
own abilities. She states, "If you ask men and women questions about completely objective criteria
such as GPAs or sales goals, men get it wrong slightly high; women get it wrong slightly low. More
importantly, if you ask men why they succeeded, men attribute that success to themselves; and
women, they attribute it to other factors like working harder, help from others, being lucky, etc"
(Sandberg). After reading this puzzling fact, I started to wonder what factors played into these
differences in the ways of thinking between men and women.
An underlying message:
If you think about your childhood you were probably immersed with toys suiting your gender. If
you're a girl, you were probably given dolls of some

Why Women Still Can 't Have It All By Anne Marie Slaughter
Even today, in 2017, the issue of equality in the workplace is a very real and talked about problem.
Sheryl Sandberg talks about this issue in "Lean In: What Would You Do If You Weren't Afraid." She
proposes the idea that the reason women do not receive results equal to their male counterparts is
not because of lack of opportunity, but because they are choosing to pursue different priorities than
men. In "Why Women Still Can't Have It All," Anne–Marie Slaughter discusses the idea that in
today's economic and social environment, it is not realistic for women to try to "have it all."
Similarly, Richard Dorment writes about why it is not just women that "can't have it all" in his book,
"Why Men Still Can't Have It All." There are always at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Critics of Sandberg say she blames women for the problem, but it is apparent that her enthusiasm for
women is misunderstood for criticism. Sandberg quotes and endorses Judith Rodin's statement that
"My generation fought so hard to give all of you choices. We believe in choices" (645). Slaughter
and Dorment's articles focus more on the cause and effect of this phenomenon, but their messages at
the root are the same. In recent history, the majority of the movement regarding the gender gap in
the workplace has been in response to the opportunity available to males versus female. Today
however, that debate topic has shifted to explain why opportunity does not grantee professional
success and what role society plays on that restriction. It was already said by Sandberg that a
difference in biology affects the choices individuals make, and that issue alone is independent from
any social construct that would usually affect choices. Slaughter outlines one of these societal flaws
is in the "unspoken rules" or norms of hiring and firing in Washington. She states, "to admit to,
much less act on, maternal longings would have been fatal to their careers." Often a euphemism for
being fired is saying that one is leaving to focus on homemaking. It seems to be implied by the
authors that often, merely having a family that deserves time and

Basically, her main argument was women need to make their presence known and contribute to
major leadership decisions that define the success of their companies, just like their male peers. The
book Lean was thought–provoking and amazing. Essentially, some of the scenarios that were talk
about speaks volumes to the reader on a personal level. Primarily, it is like relating to situations that
you were part of at some time in your personal or professional life. Surprisingly, some readers
would assume that this book was written with the intentions of showing flaws in the characteristics
of women when it came to their desires to become leaders. Personally, it is my belief that women are
generally less ambitious than men in their careers, because they assumed that they would not be able
to juggle family life while holding down a leadership position. The few that decide to pursue
leadership roles most times succeed and set themselves apart from their male counterparts. Frankly,
the fight for women in leadership has to be a joint venture by both women and men or the inequality
fight would be ineffective. Sheryl Sandberg stated in her introduction: Internalizing the Revolution:

Similarities Between Big Daddy And Daddy Bee
"Daddy Bee"
When thinking about civil law we depict a set of interpretation of rules that codify laws that we
follow. Lawmakers are typically the essential individuals providing greater explanations of how the
law applies. In the films "Big Daddy" and "Bee Movie" I was able to analyze a representation of
Americas civil law systems with many different concepts. Big Daddy is a film where a man named
Sonny Koufax has spent his entire life avoiding responsibility. Then one day his girlfriend dumps
him so he decides to find a way to prove that he is ready to grow up. This is the moment when a
five–year–old kid name Julian, comes knocking at his apartment door claiming that he is the father.
Nevertheless, Julian is not actually Sonny's kid but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When thinking about these two films we can see how has civil law establish a representation of
torts, negligence, product liability, compensatory damages, and many other things that relate to the
analyzation of the American civil law portrayed in our media.
Torts in the bee movie were very visible. Being able to see that torts are typically application of
common law principles that develop over time through the accumulation of precedents raises an
awareness of what actually occurs in a case (Berk Lecture, 04/12/17). For example, in the Bee
Movie the scene where another bee named Adam Flayman stings an individual named Layton it was
not his intention to commit the injury but was still liable for doing so, because there was still
someone who got hurt, and in order for there to be a tort there has to be an injury. As a result, having
torts provide incentives for good conduct and disincentives for bad conduct, provides compensation,
and fairness in the objective over other mechanisms (Feinman,145) Thus said, with Adam
committing the injury he has to take responsibility for an action that he did.
Focusing on negligence in comparison to torts Big Daddy portraits a comparative negligence for the
fact that the plaintiff was at fault. The reason behind this is because Sonny new that keeping the kid
was not correct since he was not the legal guardian of the child. Thus in this case shows that Sonny
did not assume the risk after taking Julian in as his

Gender And Gender Equality
s
Centuries after another and now the present, the twenty–first century still faces a huge issue towards
the acceptance on gender equality. Nonetheless, women are unappreciated in today's society's
workforce. But for Sheryl Sandberg who wrote the article "Lean In", believes that any women in the
world could be whoever they want to be. Sandberg inspires many girls of today's generation for
being a successful woman who followed her dreams and not let inequalities and gender roles affect
her. Through Sandberg's hard work, she became the COO of Facebook and eventually became a
billionaire. Her successful story was shared on her essay where she stated encouraging aspects of
how women should be. Such as, leaning in to their careers instead of stepping back to focus on
family. In addition, Sandberg concludes that women shouldn't be afraid of pursuing their ambition
because of the negative views that they may receive or even the fear of failing. In other hand, the
author of "Beyond Lean In", Bell Hooks argues that leaning in is maybe not for everyone. Hooks
criticizes Sandberg about her views of how women should be because Hooks thinks that Sandberg
did not consider the women with different backgrounds. Furthermore, Hooks did not ignore the fact
that some women struggles to succeed on the workforce due to their race and social class. Hooks
points out a very legitimate fact because she actually look at different types of women while
Sandberg might not be able to relate to that

According to Eagly and Carli, "mentors can teach their protégés about their organizations or

women can try to catch moments with busy senior persons, and as time goes on, they will remember

Sandberg thinks the best way to have a mentor relationship is and mentor and protégés are opposite

Is Education The Key For Global Empowerment?
Is Education the Key for Global Empowerment? Unlike what is the case in the US, globally primary
education is far from a guarantee. Every year millions of children are going uneducated, stripping
the intellectual capacity of many impoverished nations. No segment of the global population does
this more acutely effect than girls. Many societies feel a strong cultural push educate boys but the
same pressures are often absent for girls. Insert link to article on Michelle Obama Why is this
important? Increasing access to education not only increasing the intellectual ceiling of a region but
it has the power in revolutionizing the lives of millions. Each additional year of schooling will
increase future wages by 10–20% (Global Campaign for Education, 5). The benefits of female
education far surpass that of men. A well–educated female is far less likely to have unwanted
pregnancies, contract HIV, and contribute more of their wages to their families; up to 90% vs. a
male's 30–40% (GCE, 5). We are incredibly fortunate to be living in the United States. While the US
is certainly not a perfect society; there exists an ability to "create our own destiny." There is no
explicit prohibition on a role any of the members of this class may wish to achieve. At the same
time, it would be foolish to not acknowledge that while everyone may have a freedom of agency,
structural issues do still exist. These exist primarily due to sticky implicit biases that all people have,

The Lie Society 's Living
The Lie Society's Living
A man opening his front door with a briefcase in his hand, yells, "Honey I'm home!" after a tiring
day at work has been shown in many movies and TV shows in America, but is this an accurate
representation of our society life today? Is it men who is still the head of the house or has society
changed throughout the years? Is the struggle of women being seconded with making decisions a
valid point? Stephen Marche's article "Home Economic: The Link Between Work–Life Balance and
Income Equality" presents the argument that the major struggle in domestic life "isn't men versus
women or mothers versus fathers; it's the family against money" (1). Marche's ideas in the article are
only a small step in the right in the right direction, but are correct in his verdicts (might change

Marche begins explaining his take on the article "Why Women Still Can't Have it All?" by Anne–
Marie Slaughter's and the book, Lean In, by Sheryl Sandberg ––––––––––––––––––––– (Need

describes the book Lean in to show aspects of false hope, since "work and talent alone" cannot bring
someone closer to success for both men and women (2). After reading the article "Why Women Still
Can't Have It All?," he thought of the many men that may "'have it all'" (qtd. in 3) who, in reality, do

Half The Sky Analysis
Half the Sky written by Nicholas D. Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn is a novel that in dept depicts
some of the horrific cases of the oppression of women and girls in developing countries. The novel
takes you through Africa and Asia, with detailed accounts of how so many women have been treated
poorly simply because of their status and sex. Not only does the novel give you shocking and almost
surprising information that most people in more developed countries don't know, because they are
sheltered by their countries ways; It shows the light at the end of the tunnel, that women can rise
from this status of oppression, that by being educated, by speaking up and giving ourselves a voice,
we can overcome these barriers and achieve greatness, no matter where we are or the troubles we

How To Write An Essay On Half The Sky Turning Opportunity...

  • 1. How To Write An Essay On Half The Sky Turning Opportunity... Women's Rights are Human Rights Women. This word creates an image– an image of a mother, a sister, a daughter. Women are of the basics part of life, they are essential not only to society, but to the human species. Therefore, women should be treated with equal importance and given the same rights regardless of gender. Society has come a long way since 1920 and giving women the right to vote. However, there a parts of the world where women are treated unequally in respect of men and are fighting for that equality– a basic human right. Women especially in the developing world struggle with unjust inequalities. Common abuses that claim women are sex trafficking and forced prostitution; gender–based violence, including honor killings and mass rape; and maternal mortality. Reportage and storytelling of these horrible abuses are combined in the nonfiction book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, where Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn argue that the oppression of women is the worst current global issue that calls for change. Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide was published in 2009, after Kristoff and WuDunn spent an abundance of time abroad volunteering. While both authors were researching for their book, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The consequences of these abuses result in human pain and suffering. Kristof and WuDunn wanted to inform their audience on the severity of the matter at hand. Through statistical alongside anecdotal evidence, the authors were able to inform their audience on an unfamiliar topic by breaking down the problem into segments while building a personal connection through stories. This reportage exposes the injustices women face and makes a call for change to help this humanitarian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Feminism is not a new idea but it is a growing one and people have different views on it, but most feminist can agree on is that women need to move up in the workplace and Bell Hook's the author of "Dig Deep: Beyond Lean In" and Sheryl Sandberg the author of "Lean in: What Would You Do If You Weren't Afraid?" both explore. Even though it might appear that Bell Hook's and Sheryl Sandberg agree that women should be more proactive in their workplace, on a closer look, they actually disagree about the type of people who should be taking the advice, seen through Bell Hook's criticism of Sheryl Sandberg. Bell Hook's criticism of Sheryl Sandberg is seen through her analysis of Sheryl's social status and wealth. Bell Hook's analysis of Sheryl Sandberg's wealth and social status gives the reader a better understanding of how "Sandberg effectively uses her race and class power and privilege to promote a narrow definition of feminism that obscures and undermines visionary feminist concerns" (662). If you didn't know Sheryl Sandberg is worth about 1.6 billion dollars and has one of the highest positions in the most popular social media website in the world. You can see from her status it's difficult for normal people to take her serious about struggle, it's like a lottery ticket winner telling you to buy as many lottery tickets as you can. • 5. Equal Rights For Women Equal rights for women has been in an ongoing conversation throughout America, especially when it comes to the workforce. Equal pay and opportunity has been fought for, for many years. But can the workforce really be equal if the women do not do their part to strive and stay in work? In Sheryl Sandberg's Ted Talk "Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders" she discusses the topic of how women can rise to the top and become leaders in the world by staying in their line of work. She explains that although equality for women has progressed, leadership positions often lack female occupants. (Sandberg, 2010, page 12) She backs her statements using logos as she goes farther into detail by sharing statistical data. Sandberg gives three fairly simple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being a young woman myself I have personally struggled with this as well as seen many of my friends struggle with this. There has been many times where I left a test or showcase tournament knowing I failed to do the best I could when in doubt I did just fine. I believe this to tie into an underlying self esteem issue women face. According to Colleen Slaughter (2016), "In a KPMG Women's Leadership study, 67% of women said they needed more support building confidence to feel like they can be leaders." This statistic shows that women lack the self confidence to "sit at the table". In order for women to become top leaders in industries they must first find their confidence within themselves. As Sandberg begins to discuss her second rule, make your partner a real partner, there are many obstacles that one could face which might make following them impractical. She also neglects the fact the some households differ. In her Ted Talk, one can come to the conclusion that she is advertising to the families that have a mom and a dad. In fact Sandberg specifically states (2010, page), "If a woman and a man work full time and have a child, the woman does twice the amount of housework the man does, and the woman does three times the amount of childcare the man does." Sandberg fails to include a version of rule number two that would be attainable for nonheterosexual woman as well as single parents. According to Gretchen Livingston (2014), ... • 7. American Studies Class Analysis One of my most memorable learning experiences occurred this year in my American Studies class. As a part of the class my teacher, Mr. Blahnik, had agree and disagree topics about current issues in today's society. During this process, differences of ethics and morals clashed, but at the same time it was beneficial to envision what another is picturing an issue. In addition, it taught how the same facts that two people build their interpretation of replies completely on the interpretation of each individual. This knowledge on how everything was based on interpretation allowed me to be rewarded with more confidence in my response. As a student who moved to Sturgeon Bay High School just a school year ago, it was nerve racking to be strong in my believes not knowing the basics of what my peers would think. The documentary, Half the Sky Part II: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide (2012), is based off of a book written by Nicolas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. The setting of this documentary is in three poor countries, Kenya, Somaliland, and India. This is a nonfictional documentary where maternal mortality, prostitution, and economic empowerment tend to be common constant struggles in many developing countries. Kristof and WuDunn travel with three talented celebrity activist to witness these struggles first hand and helped spread global awareness. These celebrities come face to face with three passionate women in each country who fight daily to make a difference and change women's inequality in their countries. Women in these countries and in many other countries deal with maternal mortality, sex trafficking, violence, and discrimination threats every day. Some women do not know different and are lead to believe this is their destine while others are frightened and are begging for change. Although, these countries are on different parts of the map they have common struggles due to common causes. Maternal mortality, prostitution, and economic empowerment become global struggles due to lack of education and financial ability of both the country itself and individuals living in these countries. • 11. Overcoming Racism: A Theme Of Discrimination When faced with fear, humans have two options: fight or flight. Whichever one comes naturally says a lot about a person. If someone is confronted by something that can hurt them and others around them, an otherwise caring person might become an untamed monster in the race to save themselves before anyone else. Although fear can be a paralyzing experience, it is important to keep your identity and stand by what you believe in no matter what. Even if remaining true to your beliefs means you end up with nothing left, you still have hope, and hope can overpower anything. The human race is separated into groups whether we like it or not. This week was the final week at my internship and I am sad to see it come to an end. Thankfully, I was successful in my endeavors to synthesis a thermostable DNA polymerase, in this case pfu, but there was still so much more I could have done with it. Creating the pfu was only the first step, there was still so much more testing I could have done, whether it be comparing it to an actual company made pfu or figuring out more specifics for my pfu. Nonetheless, I still succeeded and had fun. Nothing terribly exciting happened this week. I worked more on my presentation, constantly changing little things hear and there, ... Sheryl Sandberg's Criticism Of 'Lean In' In 2013, Sheryl Sandberg released the best – selling novel, Lean in, that calls on professional women to "lean in" by aiming for leadership positions in their jobs and examines what factors prevent woman from doing so. Last year, her non – profit organization launched a public awareness campaign, Lean In Together, or #LeanInTogether, to partner with the NBA and WNBA. This campaign was focused on men's roles in reaching gender equality. However, the book and campaign has faced its criticism. Reviewers have deemed the book too narrowly focused on women like Sandberg who are educated, white, and provided with opportunities out of the reach of an average female. Other critics have questioned Sandberg's relevant guidance to the average woman, since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I choose FIFA because of the giant inequality gap between the men and the women. LeanIn is designed the bring men and women together, and FIFA should embrace this as it's been proven that there is a big audience for women's soccer. 26.7 million viewers watched the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup Final. However, women's soccer is not treated equally with the men. Sepp Blatter is on record saying that women players should wear short shorts to gain more viewers. Also, the women World Cup games were played on artificial turf causing opposed to the men who played on grass, and men's games are given incredible investment and promotion, that the women do not receive. The FIFA LeanIn program would heavily emphasize promoting the women as equal to the men. Giving the women players the same type of investment given to promoting the men can go a long way to driving interest and attendance for the women. To further promote this movement, men's leagues such as the Premier League can invoke a uniform change where players wear jersey badges that promote the LeanIn campaign along with placing banners around the field. • 17. Why Men Still Can 't Have It All By Richard Dorment In the essay "Why Men Still Can't Have It All" by Richard Dorment, the topic of equality in the genders is explored. This topic includes various aspects of the lives of men and women, including work in and out of the home. Dorment responds to other opinions and viewpoints and explains why "no one can have it all." He brings up many convincing arguments that show why the feminist push for equals rights for women is not producing the outcome that people want it to have. I agree with what much of Dorment is saying in this essay, and the following paragraphs will explain Dorment's argument. To start the essay, Dorment asks the question of whether it is better to be born a boy or a girl in today's society. He says it is a toss–up, and gives a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, Dorment says that one's feelings cannot be used as evidence of an injury. He also gives an example from his own life. He and his wife share laundry duty, but when he folds the laundry, his wife does it again. When he asks why she does this, she tells him he folds the laundry wrong. He makes the point that women want to be helped and supported more around the house, but tell men that they are doing things wrong. I can see where Dorment is coming from with these points. In today's society, people base too many arguments on feelings, instead of facts, truth, and evidence. The feelings of expectations for the house are not men's fault, nor are men the cause for women's hardship in this area. Men and women also have different opinions and reactions to leaving the house for work, Dorment says. Men today want to be better fathers than men in previous generations, men still feel like they have to provide for the family, even if they have wives that bring in forty–five percent of the family income (Dorment 709). This is why men feel as though they can work long hours away from home. They feel as though they are sacrificing time with their kids to provide for the family (even though they may still miss their kids). Women, Dorment points out, have a different reaction to leaving their kids to go to work. They feel guilty and experience ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Girl Girls Who Code Sheryl Sandberg "Leaning in" is a phrase Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook, uses to encourage women to pursue their ambitions and change the conversation from what they can't do to what they can. One unsuspecting spring afternoon, I learned just how important that phrase was. It was that fateful day, where the transient spring air was just morphing into summer, that I truly understood what it meant to 'lean in', take initiative, and pursue my aspirations with a perfervid zeal. I have always had a passionate interest in technology, from the very first time I was introduced to a rapidly–growing phenomenon called coding. It both fascinated and perplexed me; numbers and letters, pixels on a shiny screen, amalgamating together to produce something awe–inspiring. Just as it seems, hearing of the tragedies may be overwhelming to listen to because there are so many occurrences to keep track of. In the essay "The Girl Effect," Nicholas D. Kristof and his wife Sheryl WuDunn are journalists who relocated to China from the U.S. to pursue their careers. They come to find out about how neglected we've been to certain quotidian cruelties that take place in foreign counties specifically relating to the unfair treatment of women and girls. In this essay "On Habit," Alain de Botton may refer to this blindness as a "home mindset" where we pay very little detail of what surrounds of because we've become habituated to the everyday occurrences. Kristof and WuDunn write their essay in order to expose those quotidian cruelties certain cultures have become habituated in their home mindsets. De Botton might have suggested inheriting a "travelling mindset" for those people who lived in the cultures where the tragic cruelties and are stuck in their home mindsets. A travelling mindset includes integrating receptivity which is the main difference between a home mindset and a travelling mindset. We are blind to the many tragedies that occur in foreign countries and our own because we have become habituated to our social norms that we find no reason to publish what we see as "the obvious". The book is consisted of a series of essays and short stories which forms two major parts to the book. The first part of the book argues that the oppression and mistreatment of women is evident mostly in third world countries and is becoming more and more devastating by the moment. The first part also describes the under– recognized aspect of the problem and highlights the injustices that are almost are as equivalent to slavery. The second part is what makes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Comparing the issue of sexual slavery to slavery makes the issue even more complicated as there are key differences to highlight. Slavery started off as a legal action and was fully acceptable throughout whole nations, then came the moral risers, the abolitionists, who focused on arguing that slavery should become illegal. They succeeded eventually and once it was illegal, the trade of slaves stopped. In the case of sexual slavery, nowhere in the world is rape and enforced sexual slavery actually a legal action. The problem with the legality issue, and several of the stories mentioned by the authors make this point very clear, is the unconcern and corruption of the authorities in fighting the issue. Moreover, the silence of the victim, who once goes public with the ordeal, is publicly humiliated and ashamed makes it even harder to combat and battle. Last but not least, the lack of schooling and education plus the lack of medical care for women often reflects most families' ignorances of the economic potential of healthy, educated women. Given all the circumstances surrounding the issue and the context in which the problem is situated, the authors call upon the supporting of individuals they call in Half the Sky, "social entrepreneurs," just like Mukhtar Mai, Usha Narayane and Sunitha ... Sheryl Sandberg Analysis Brock Baggarley Mrs. Lynne Adams English 1101– 2nd Period 7 September 2017 Word Count: 772 Moving Forward I've often experienced feelings of regrets because of risks I have taken or not taken and words I have said or left unsaid. I sometimes think about how I will deal with these in my future life and how I will cope with grief and other emotions as I grow older. In her book, Option B, author Sheryl Sandberg helps me deal with moments like these. She states, "Of the hundreds of answers, most had one thing in common: the majority of regrets were about failure to act, not actions that failed. Psychologists have found that over time we usually regret the chances we missed, not the chances we took. As my mom often told me when I was growing up, 'You regret the things you don't do, not the things you do' " (Sandberg 145). The lasting impression that this narrative will leave with readers includes having no regrets, living life to its fullest, and grieving is a natural emotion. Sandberg discusses how to live life without regret and deal with grief as a natural emotion that everyone will experience. When a person loses a loved one, the hardest emotional phase that we experience is grief. Within grief, regret is common by remembering the opportunities that have been lost. Sheryl Sandberg states, "I thought constantly about how if I'd known that Dave and I had only eleven years, I would've made sure we spent more time together. Lean In: Women, Work and The Will To Lead, by Sheryl Sandberg, addresses how women can achieve professional achievement and overcome the lack of leadership progress that has been absent over the past few years. Sandberg uses personal experience, research and humor to examine the choices that working women make everyday. She argues that women can achieve professional goals while still being happy within their personal lives. She evaluates how men describe their success and how their success is accepted much better then when women achieve success. She admits that she has been at fault of doing this but it is something that needs to change similar to people view gender bias. Gender bias has continued to be constructed in communication through marked forms. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg discusses, "When people talk about a female pilot, a female engineer, or a female race car driver, the word "female" implies a bit of surprise"(Sandberg, 140). If everyone continues not to discuss gender bias then the world will continue to use marked forms, which Sandberg sees as a tool for people to be–little others (Sandberg, 140). She concludes this thought by saying "We can no longer pretend that biases do not exist, nor can we talk around them. The result of creating a more equal environment will not just be better performance for our organizations, but quite likely greater happiness for all"(Sandberg, 158). • 37. Gender Inequality In Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In Sheryl Sandberg's book Lean In tries to argue and persuade women that the best way to change gender inequality starts with changing themselves. Her argument requires women to take the initiative and change their own lives before bothering to transform the system and other outside forces. Sandberg is not successful in her argument because her privilege and power in the workforce make it so her argument is only relevant to a small percent of the population, and thus, while not invalid, not as relevant as it could be. She is very privileged, and it shows in her writing. She is a white, wealthy, and among the most privileged members of our society. This, in turn, undermines Sandberg's argument and her assumption that her book will work for everyone. Sandberg structures her book so she has a lot of personal anecdotes that she uses to try to get her point across and to invoke pathos. However, her stories are not relatable: most of the population cannot begin to imagine walking up to the founders of Google, addressing them by their first name, and making demands that are acknowledged addressed, crying on Mark Zuckerberg's shoulder, or even going to a school like Harvard (Sandberg 4, 88, 29). As a woman living in a globally thriving society, one may contemplate women's rights as not being a problem anymore, that humans' rights relate to every single gender, but sadly this is not yet true. Women have fought in the constant battle of gaining equal rights as their opposing gender for decades. Though times have gotten a lot better since the era of the Victorian Age, today women have not given up their focus on equal rights and how society should treat them. We read regularly and are given the opportunity to be aware of the violences women face within their homes, working areas, and sometimes sadly in areas of worship. Society has allowed for such incidents against women to become a "social norm," an action that is wrong, but can just slide through the cracks. But there is one question that lingers through the minds of the victims of society today, "do we surely apprehend and respect the rights of women?" Unfortunately the answer is no for a majority of women with our society, instead of calling on the conversation of action, society continually deprives women of equal pay, harassment of women at work, and domestic violence. These practices are some of the shameful works and demonstrations witnessed in our society that are to be eradicated from our civilization. The reason why drug in sport is a global issue is because many athletes in the world use performance enhancing drugs and influence others to use these drugs because of their success. An issue is a disagreement between two or more parties in a public forum. Many people disagree with others about the topic, 'Drug in sport.' Some people believe that performance enhancing drugs make sport far more interesting and competitive. They believe this because they love to see records being broken, unbelievable finishes to games and the suspense of who will win. Other people believe that this does not make sense and that drugs take away from the meaning from sports. If drugs were to be used in sports then we would not have the special people like Cristiano Ronaldo and Usain Bolt, two spectacular athletes who work very hard to gain as much success as possible. Research shows that more people think that drugs should not be used in sport and I agree with them because without drugs it shows us how important hard work and a good attitude is, to be successful. What's even more startling is that of all the fortune 500 CEOs only twenty–one of them are women (Sandberg, 2013). These eye–opening statistics show that although women have made great strides in the workplace throughout the years one question remains; Why are there not more women in leadership positions? Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook chief operating officer and author of Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead examined the causes of this halt in progress and the possible solutions. The first idea that Sandberg mentions in her book revolves around women underestimating their own abilities. She states, "If you ask men and women questions about completely objective criteria such as GPAs or sales goals, men get it wrong slightly high; women get it wrong slightly low. More importantly, if you ask men why they succeeded, men attribute that success to themselves; and women, they attribute it to other factors like working harder, help from others, being lucky, etc" (Sandberg). After reading this puzzling fact, I started to wonder what factors played into these differences in the ways of thinking between men and women. An underlying message: If you think about your childhood you were probably immersed with toys suiting your gender. If you're a girl, you were probably given dolls of some ... • 62. Why Women Still Can 't Have It All By Anne Marie Slaughter Even today, in 2017, the issue of equality in the workplace is a very real and talked about problem. Sheryl Sandberg talks about this issue in "Lean In: What Would You Do If You Weren't Afraid." She proposes the idea that the reason women do not receive results equal to their male counterparts is not because of lack of opportunity, but because they are choosing to pursue different priorities than men. In "Why Women Still Can't Have It All," Anne–Marie Slaughter discusses the idea that in today's economic and social environment, it is not realistic for women to try to "have it all." Similarly, Richard Dorment writes about why it is not just women that "can't have it all" in his book, "Why Men Still Can't Have It All." There are always at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Critics of Sandberg say she blames women for the problem, but it is apparent that her enthusiasm for women is misunderstood for criticism. Sandberg quotes and endorses Judith Rodin's statement that "My generation fought so hard to give all of you choices. We believe in choices" (645). Slaughter and Dorment's articles focus more on the cause and effect of this phenomenon, but their messages at the root are the same. In recent history, the majority of the movement regarding the gender gap in the workplace has been in response to the opportunity available to males versus female. Today however, that debate topic has shifted to explain why opportunity does not grantee professional success and what role society plays on that restriction. It was already said by Sandberg that a difference in biology affects the choices individuals make, and that issue alone is independent from any social construct that would usually affect choices. Slaughter outlines one of these societal flaws is in the "unspoken rules" or norms of hiring and firing in Washington. She states, "to admit to, much less act on, maternal longings would have been fatal to their careers." Often a euphemism for being fired is saying that one is leaving to focus on homemaking. It seems to be implied by the authors that often, merely having a family that deserves time and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The plight of girls is no more a tragedy than an opportunity" (Kristof & WuDunn, 2009, p. xviii). This quote does an excellent job of introducing the issues discussed in the book Half the Sky. In this book, Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn present us with the issue of the unjust and cruel treatment of women in today's world. Women throughout the world are treated in unthinkably bad ways, but the majority of people are not even aware of the suffering these women face on a daily basis. According to Kristof and WuDunn (2009), "Women aged fifteen through forty–four are more likely to be maimed or die from male violence than from cancer, malaria, traffic accidents, and war combined" (p. 61). However, Kristof and WuDunn (2009) also point out that if something dramatic such as a school shooting or bombing takes place, it makes breaking news, and everyone is aware of it all at once (p. xiv). Knopf a division of Penguin Random house and is copyrighted 2013 by Lean in Foundation. The author Sheryl Sandberg is the daughter of Adele and Joel Sandberg and the oldest of three siblings. Her father, Joel, is an optometrist, and her mother, Adele, has a Ph. D. and worked as a French teacher. She attended and graduated from public high school and in 1987, Sandberg enrolled at Harvard College and graduated in 1991 summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and was awarded the John H. Basically, her main argument was women need to make their presence known and contribute to major leadership decisions that define the success of their companies, just like their male peers. The book Lean was thought–provoking and amazing. Essentially, some of the scenarios that were talk about speaks volumes to the reader on a personal level. Primarily, it is like relating to situations that you were part of at some time in your personal or professional life. Surprisingly, some readers would assume that this book was written with the intentions of showing flaws in the characteristics of women when it came to their desires to become leaders. Personally, it is my belief that women are generally less ambitious than men in their careers, because they assumed that they would not be able to juggle family life while holding down a leadership position. The few that decide to pursue leadership roles most times succeed and set themselves apart from their male counterparts. Frankly, the fight for women in leadership has to be a joint venture by both women and men or the inequality fight would be ineffective. • 68. Similarities Between Big Daddy And Daddy Bee "Daddy Bee" When thinking about civil law we depict a set of interpretation of rules that codify laws that we follow. Lawmakers are typically the essential individuals providing greater explanations of how the law applies. In the films "Big Daddy" and "Bee Movie" I was able to analyze a representation of Americas civil law systems with many different concepts. Big Daddy is a film where a man named Sonny Koufax has spent his entire life avoiding responsibility. Then one day his girlfriend dumps him so he decides to find a way to prove that he is ready to grow up. This is the moment when a five–year–old kid name Julian, comes knocking at his apartment door claiming that he is the father. Nevertheless, Julian is not actually Sonny's kid but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When thinking about these two films we can see how has civil law establish a representation of torts, negligence, product liability, compensatory damages, and many other things that relate to the analyzation of the American civil law portrayed in our media. Torts in the bee movie were very visible. Being able to see that torts are typically application of common law principles that develop over time through the accumulation of precedents raises an awareness of what actually occurs in a case (Berk Lecture, 04/12/17). For example, in the Bee Movie the scene where another bee named Adam Flayman stings an individual named Layton it was not his intention to commit the injury but was still liable for doing so, because there was still someone who got hurt, and in order for there to be a tort there has to be an injury. As a result, having torts provide incentives for good conduct and disincentives for bad conduct, provides compensation, and fairness in the objective over other mechanisms (Feinman,145) Thus said, with Adam committing the injury he has to take responsibility for an action that he did. Focusing on negligence in comparison to torts Big Daddy portraits a comparative negligence for the fact that the plaintiff was at fault. The reason behind this is because Sonny new that keeping the kid was not correct since he was not the legal guardian of the child. Thus in this case shows that Sonny did not assume the risk after taking Julian in as his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Gender And Gender Equality s Centuries after another and now the present, the twenty–first century still faces a huge issue towards the acceptance on gender equality. Nonetheless, women are unappreciated in today's society's workforce. But for Sheryl Sandberg who wrote the article "Lean In", believes that any women in the world could be whoever they want to be. Sandberg inspires many girls of today's generation for being a successful woman who followed her dreams and not let inequalities and gender roles affect her. Through Sandberg's hard work, she became the COO of Facebook and eventually became a billionaire. Her successful story was shared on her essay where she stated encouraging aspects of how women should be. Such as, leaning in to their careers instead of stepping back to focus on family. In addition, Sandberg concludes that women shouldn't be afraid of pursuing their ambition because of the negative views that they may receive or even the fear of failing. In other hand, the author of "Beyond Lean In", Bell Hooks argues that leaning in is maybe not for everyone. Hooks criticizes Sandberg about her views of how women should be because Hooks thinks that Sandberg did not consider the women with different backgrounds. Furthermore, Hooks did not ignore the fact that some women struggles to succeed on the workforce due to their race and social class. Hooks points out a very legitimate fact because she actually look at different types of women while Sandberg might not be able to relate to that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She also talked about it is not easy to find good and wise mentors, especially for women. There are solutions to these barriers, lower position women can try to catch moments with busy senior persons, and as time goes on, they will remember you, they might not become your mentors, but the relationship is more important than the titles. Sandberg thinks the best way to have a mentor relationship is and mentor and protégés are opposite sex from each other because they can understand each other better from their own perspectives. The downside to this is that sometimes when people see an older senior men mentoring a young lower level employee can get people confused by their relationships. • 74. Is Education The Key For Global Empowerment? Is Education the Key for Global Empowerment? Unlike what is the case in the US, globally primary education is far from a guarantee. Every year millions of children are going uneducated, stripping the intellectual capacity of many impoverished nations. No segment of the global population does this more acutely effect than girls. Many societies feel a strong cultural push educate boys but the same pressures are often absent for girls. Insert link to article on Michelle Obama Why is this important? Increasing access to education not only increasing the intellectual ceiling of a region but it has the power in revolutionizing the lives of millions. Each additional year of schooling will increase future wages by 10–20% (Global Campaign for Education, 5). The benefits of female education far surpass that of men. A well–educated female is far less likely to have unwanted pregnancies, contract HIV, and contribute more of their wages to their families; up to 90% vs. a male's 30–40% (GCE, 5). We are incredibly fortunate to be living in the United States. While the US is certainly not a perfect society; there exists an ability to "create our own destiny." There is no explicit prohibition on a role any of the members of this class may wish to achieve. At the same time, it would be foolish to not acknowledge that while everyone may have a freedom of agency, structural issues do still exist. These exist primarily due to sticky implicit biases that all people have, normally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Lie Society 's Living The Lie Society's Living A man opening his front door with a briefcase in his hand, yells, "Honey I'm home!" after a tiring day at work has been shown in many movies and TV shows in America, but is this an accurate representation of our society life today? Is it men who is still the head of the house or has society changed throughout the years? Is the struggle of women being seconded with making decisions a valid point? Stephen Marche's article "Home Economic: The Link Between Work–Life Balance and Income Equality" presents the argument that the major struggle in domestic life "isn't men versus women or mothers versus fathers; it's the family against money" (1). Marche's ideas in the article are only a small step in the right in the right direction, but are correct in his verdicts (might change word). Marche begins explaining his take on the article "Why Women Still Can't Have it All?" by Anne– Marie Slaughter's and the book, Lean In, by Sheryl Sandberg ––––––––––––––––––––– (Need explanation) (2). He believes that it is odd men are not in the picture with the discussion of "work and life" and concludes that the decision made in a family must be made together (2). Marche describes the book Lean in to show aspects of false hope, since "work and talent alone" cannot bring someone closer to success for both men and women (2). After reading the article "Why Women Still Can't Have It All?," he thought of the many men that may "'have it all'" (qtd. in 3) who, in reality, do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Half The Sky Analysis Half the Sky written by Nicholas D. Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn is a novel that in dept depicts some of the horrific cases of the oppression of women and girls in developing countries. The novel takes you through Africa and Asia, with detailed accounts of how so many women have been treated poorly simply because of their status and sex. Not only does the novel give you shocking and almost surprising information that most people in more developed countries don't know, because they are sheltered by their countries ways; It shows the light at the end of the tunnel, that women can rise from this status of oppression, that by being educated, by speaking up and giving ourselves a voice, we can overcome these barriers and achieve greatness, no matter where we are or the troubles we face along the way.
