The Most Dangerous Game Insanity Examples
Many stories have a horror theme, which show characters becoming insane. Examples of insanity
stories are, "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, "Survivor Type" by Stephen King,
and last but not least "The Others" which is based on a film by Alejandro Amenabar. Characters in
the stories all develop insanity in different ways, but the characters live there life not knowing of
their insanity, and those are Rainsford and Zaroff from "The Most Dangerous Games", Pine from
"Survivor Type", and Grace from "The Others". In the beginning, characters are shown who they are
and protecting what they love most, which is family and their own life. Throughout the story
characters go extreme in protecting what they love, leading them to insanity. Therefore, ... Show

The main character which is Rainsford is a big–game hunter, Rainsford doesn't care about his prey.
All he wants is to kill and hunt. Now from that point of view, readers can see the little bit of insanity
in Rainsford by all that aggressive hunting stuff that he does. Rainsford was on a yacht and fell off
of it, he ended up swimming to a rocky shore which was called Ship–Trap Island. This island was all
about hunting which basically what Rainsford is, a hunter. Before Rainsford fell from the yacht he
was with his friend name Whitney, saw an island which was the Ship– Trap Island, this island was a
bad and unlucky place for many thing that happened. As Rainsford and Whitney were passing the
island, Rainsford said, "I hold the jaguar guns have come from Prudey's. We should have some good
hunting up the Amazon. Great sport, hunting" (Connell, 1). Throughout the part when Rainsford is
on the island he saw the general and his name was Zaroff. Zaroff was those types of general that
always wants to win, Zaroff read Rainsford's hunting book and told him " I've read your book about
hunting snow leopards in Tibet, you see"(4). As for Rainsford all he wants is for him winning the
game. The only thing that could make Rainsford escape is to hunt and try to win, when actually
Zaroff wants him to lose. As days passed by, the insanity of

Critical Analysis On Spanish Horror Films

FEA 460 Spanish Cinema
Final Paper
Critical Analysis on Spanish Horror Films From the late 1960's to the early 1970's Spain rose as one
of the leading countries to dominate the horror film genre. Struggling under a brutal and confining
dictatorship for much of the 20th century, the horror genre of Spanish cinema took awhile to come
together. During the difficult and challenging days of General Franco's regime a limited series of
horror films were produced, mainly for the English market. In the later years under Franco,
hundreds of horror films were released. All were identified for their violence, eroticism, and
unrestrained cinematography. Recently, 21st century Spanish horror films, such as The Devil's
Backbone and The Others, tell chilling ghost stories that go beyond horror genre and successfully
mix suspense, horror, and coming of age techniques, during the harsh wartime, using sound,
lighting, editing, and innovative camera work.
After General Franco's regime fell, a new wave of young directors such as Bigas Luna and Pedro
Almodovar basked in their newfound freedom of expression to produce films that were unrestricted
and independent. In the 21st century, a more mature Spanish film industry had returned to the horror
genre in a big way. There have been many box office horror film hits produced outside of Spain with
Spanish talent behind the camera, such as The Others. Spanish horror films had been designed to
appeal to international markets

Conflict In Amores Perros
Mexico doesn't exist. Mexico is a collection of regions, a mosaic united by force. And now that the
nationalism of the revolution, that project has shattered, what brings us together? Football?
Criticising Carlos Salinas? Nothing more (media representative, Mexico, 2000).
Amores Perros, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu is a dark, multi–plot film never seems to
lose it's hold on you. The grime within the film, carried by it's subject matter makes for a very
compelling watch. The three storylines we see interlink excellently, constantly showing you the way
these characters lives link up with one another. From the beginning, we see the life of the Mexican
characters seem to represented by some form of conflict. The intense action of the ... Show more

The three aspects of the film are in some form, against the normality's. We see the Illegal Dog
Fighting, The life of an Assassin, and then a Cheating Husband. This questions the point of authority
in "Amores Perros" as it seems that there is no real consequence for these people's actions, other
than the loss of their dog, or their spirit animal. A prime example of this is when Valeria's dog,
Richie is trapped under the floorboards of her house, this can be viewed as a reflection of her
position in life at that time, her cheating with Daniel, and the fact she loses the opportunity to be a
model, is represented by the Dog being trapped under the floor. However, even with this small
reprimanding of each character it still poses the question of authority in the Film. Iñárittu comments
on Immigration heavily in his personal life. This can be seen also in "Amores Perros" as each of the
characters are seen as "outcasts" to the world, with the exception of Valeria. Despite this, Iñárittu
makes each character really interesting, making the mundane important, Highlighting the pandemic
of Immigration seen in Mexico, Iñárittu is quoted to have

Film Analysis: The Others
I remember watching this film for the first time back in 2001 when it was released and having not
watched it in over a decade, I feel I can say that this film is still solid. The Others holds up so well
due to the film relying on storytelling, atmosphere and sense of impending doom to create its
tension. The Others is one of the rare big budget, well cast horror films that seem to pop up every
couple of years and I love it when they do. I feel horror often gets the short end of the stick when it
comes to Hollywood.
The Others follows Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman) along with her two children Anne (Alakina
Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley). Grace is a devout Catholic and does what she can to impress
her beliefs onto her children. Both children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Regression Movie Psychology
Rating: 2 Set in Minnesota in the 1990s and supposedly based on true events, Regression threatens
more thrill than it can deliver. The dim lit, oil stained sequences follow Bruce Kenner (Ethan
Hawke) as he investigates the case of Angela Grey (Emma Watson)– a young woman whose father
John (David Dencik) confesses to having sexually abused her, even though he has no specific
memory of the crime. Inferring that John has gone into denial, Bruce enlists the help of Dr Raines
(David Thewlis), an English hypnotherapist who uses regression therapy on both father and
daughter to draw out memories of the crime. As they delve it is uncovered that Angela was an
unwilling participant and victim of satanic ritual abuses. A host of other parties come under
suspicion including Kenner's colleague Nesbitt (Aaron Ashmore), Angela's distressed grandmother
Rose (Dale Dickey) and her runaway ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The central theme is incredibly ignorant, and really makes no sense. Regression fails by trying to
focus too much on the lack–of–proof nature of regression. The compelling ideas of influence,
suggestibility and irrational bias when applied to memory and perception under trauma are quite
interesting – but those aspects are not explored with any insight whatsoever. The style and tone of
the movie shift in a very baffling fashion. On the one hand, this is a drama about mass paranoia,
false memory, superstition and the power of suggestion. On the other, it has sustained instances of a
horror movie. The healthy sprinkling of undesirable creepy faces, Cup–a–Soup, ominous tomcats
and close ups of hooded creatures do not do anything to alleviate the plot. The brash background
score by Roque Baños is a rather corny and unsubtle affair. The few flourishes of psychological
thrill in the movie are purely visual. To his credit, Daniel Aranyó's high contrast cinematography
delivers a convincing '90s postmodern horror

Narrative Elements Of Horror
Almost every genre of film to date has been designed and developed to make an audience feel
satisfied or sexed up and in love or delighted or inspired or rushed with adrenaline. Horror, on the
other hand, was the first genre that preyed on the audience's deepest fears and utilized them to
provide cinema with nightmare flair. And everybody loved it.
The idea of this essay is to address the nightmarish absurdity that horror is so well known for. I will
consider the development of the genre, as well as explore the stylistic, thematic and narrative
elements of the genre; including discourse on the visuals, the symbolisms and the subject matter in
addition to any impact the genre had on the audience, and address what role said impact had in

The term body horror was first coined in 1986 in an issue of the film magazine Screen. The films of
this subgenre concentrate on the human body and the horror of estrangement from within. Defined,
body horror is:
Such destruction or generation of the human body can be as a result of anything from alien life
forces to genetic mutations, viruses, diseases etc. Much of this subgenre was to do with society's
body–anxiety and body–consciousness and also explores identity and humanity. (Class notes: Body
Horror) Though these films address such valid points, they also strive to create a swelling unease in
the viewer and an awkward discomfort the viewer's body. The intent is to provoke sickness,
revulsion, and abhorrence in the audience.
Eraserhead, without a doubt, succeeds in achieving all of the above. This film is such a significant,
sweeping example of the far–reaching horror genre. Expressionism's influence on this genre is so
captivatingly portrayed in the film, to the extent that many of the shots, throughout the entire film,
look just like works of German Expressionist art.

An Independent Woman in the Film, Agora
When I was reading "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," I noticed how Paul
portrayed an aspect I had appreciated while watching the film Agora. As I watched the film Agora I
noticed how in contrast to the other movies we have seen in class the female character was not
defined by her relationship with men. For example, in the film Cleopatra, the female lead Cleopatra
was defined in terms of her relationship with men. Even though Cleopatra was involved in politics,
she and to win the love of Antony and Caesar in order to get power. Paul states this idea in
"Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," when he states that Hypatia "cannot be
defined primarily through her relationships with men." (Paul, "Subverting Sex and Love in
Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," 230) As I watched the film Agora, I noticed how Hypatia voiced her
opinion in front of men with no fear and appreciated the scenes which portrayed her findings. For
example, in the scene in which Hypatia is with Aspasius and discovers the model of the ellipse, the
heliocentric model. To me, to have an Ancient Roman film portray the intelligence of a women was
a positive aspect of the movie Agora. Also, her students in the film, such as Synesius and Orestes
were loyal to her and tried to help her in the end of the film. Hypatia's bravery is also portrayed in
the scene in which "in class, she presents him with her bloodied menstrual rag, telling him that there
is little harmony or beauty in the

How Does Amenabar Create Suspense
'The others' directed by, Alejandro Amenabar is a haunted house themed ghost story, which creates a
thrilling atmosphere as Amenabar emphasizes a combination of uncertainty, tension, suspense and
shock. Amenabar creates an atmosphere, which has the time and patience to generate a mood and
create mystery to the characters. The setting Amenabar has chosen is very cliché and fits into the
horror theme perfectly being a large house, which is trapped in fog. Amenabar also adds mystery to
the characters as the two children are extremely sensitive to light and can only confine in only the
dark. Amenabar let's the audiences use their imaginations to put the film together and make sense of
it, which is really what thriller/horror films need. Using different melodies and sound affects along
with different camera angles and viewpoints 'the opening scene' of Grace screaming, the 'storage
room scene' and 'the bedroom scene' all support the evidence of atmosphere and suspense.

The setting of the film is trapped in darkness; this of course is because the children are
photosensitive. However the darkness creates doubt for the characters and the audience what they
can see occurring.
Nervousness rises as the characters become more paranoid and suspicious of what they call 'the
others' in their house. The usage of light is particularly significant in the bedroom scene where both
Anne and Nicholas are in twin beds sleeping, when 'Victor' who is seemingly messing around with
the curtains suddenly awakes Anne. Anne quickly wakes up Nicholas to tell him 'Victor' has opened
the curtains. In result of the curtains being open we can now see the children's face and the audience
can't see anything in the background apart from shadows due to the

Gothic Elements In Turn Of The Screw, And The Other
Gothic Literature is a form of literature that represents the supernatural or unknown elements found
in many literary pieces. Gothic Elements consist of dark atmospheres, the supernatural, uncanny
figures, damsel in distress, physiological breakdown, and many other elements. Elements of gothic
literature are usually not used in a literal sense; authors usually use metaphors to get the aspect of
gothic literature across to the audience. Elements of gothic literature are presented throughout the
book Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, and the film "The Others", by Alejandro Amenábar. "The
Others" was actually based off of the book Turn of the Screw. Both have many similarities in their
display of elements of gothic literature. The book The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within both literary works the element of the damsel in distress is strongly presented to create a
gothic literature. In The Turn of the Screw, the governess plays the role by displaying her ongoing
battle with the ghosts over the safety of the children. Within her first couple of days at the house, she
is already seeing the ghosts of the old governess, Miss Jessel and the butler, Peter Quint. In the
book, the governess constantly tells about her concern that the children are in danger. In the book,
James writes, "Dear little Miles, dear little Miles, if you knew how I want to help you! It's only that,
it's nothing but that, and I'd rather die than give you a pain or do you a wrong"; this shows the
governesses helpless obsession with trying to keep the children safe (108). In this conversation with
Miles, the governess is trying to get him to tell her Quint blew out the candles but Miles replies that
it was him (James 108). This leads her to become distressed over her inability to protect the children
from the ghosts. Thus, she is playing the role of a damsel in distress, whom needs the assistance of
someone else to help her

Tesis Gender Roles
Gender representations in Tesis The 1996 Spanish horror film Tesis (dir. Alejandro Amenabar)
receives huge success in both domestic and international markets, and the film mixes the ideas about
masculinity and femininity in characters to distinguish itself from Hollywood films while intimating
them at the same time. The first seduction scene in Tesis happened in Angela's (Ana Torrent)
bedroom. Opening the door of her bedroom, Angel expressed her discomfort of being on camera to
Bosco (Eduardo Noriega) who showed up uninvited. Bosco replied with a flirtatious comment about
how beautiful Angela was. Angel quickly moved on to question Bosco about his camera which he
insisted that he got it second–handed. The screen cut to Bosco's camera's blue ... Show more content

Then she hurried him up, claiming she needed to have lunch. Suddenly, Angela mother called from
the hallway, asking Bosco to stay for lunch. Bosco stuck his head out to accept the offer, looking
exactly like the James Dean mannequin in the walkway. Bosco was so gorgeous that he was almost
not real. His representation of masculinity was so perfect that it seemed off. The Bosco character
was clearly one of the ways Tesis used to "challenge Hollywood's hegemony by co–opting its
methods and improving upon them" (Buckley, 3). He had all the Hollywood star quality, but he is
also a psychopath. The camera panned right as Bosco returned to his position, showing a creepy
grim on his face. Accompanied by disturbing non–diegetic music, he quickly closed the bind and
commanded Angela to sit on her bed for better lighting. Angela rushed through her script, but Bosco
wanted to record her closer and started to move closer to her while she was protesting his action.
The camera followed Bosco and stopped at a close up when their faces are so close that they almost
kissed. They just looked at each other, and through the gap between them, there was a poster of an
American queer cinema classic, My Own Private Idaho. Angela's denim jacket and Bosco's yellow
shirt looked similar to

Film Analysis: The Others
"The Others" is a horror film released on August 10th 2001, directed by Alejandro Amenabar. The
film received 83 percent positive reviews on the movie review site, "Rotten Tomatoes". The
majority of the positive reviews related to an exceptional performance by Nicole Kidman, who plays
Grace Stewart. The website consensus stated; "The Others is a spooky thriller that reminds us that a
movie doesn't need expensive special effects to be creepy". The film does have some good and
intense moments, but the 83 percent that people gave it may be slightly more than it's worthy of.

Firstly, relating to one of Sigmund Freud's "Key elements of horror fiction" this film creates an
atmosphere that arouses a strong emotional response in the viewer. It does this by causing us to
wonder if all of the characters are simply crazy in their own ways, or if this creepy old house
contains more than meets the eye. We begin to feel horribly uncomfortable at how angry Grace
becomes with her daughter, and slightly creeped out by what's going through Anne's head when it
comes to her ghost stories. Secondly, this story features the theory that the mind finds pleasure in
any kind of stimulation including fear, and we like to feel outside of our element. This film gave us
the creeps and made us feel threatened and slightly uncomfortable. It also had a few jump scare
moments causing our minds to become stimulated with fear. These theories relate to the article
"Scared Witless–The Psychology of Fear". This movie gives the viewer a lot of anticipation, giving
us an odd sense of cerebral pleasure. Sigmund Freud defined horror as "a fascinated dread in the
presence of immortal material". Fascinated is to be irresistibly drawn to something. Dread is to
anticipate something with great fear. Immaterial is something that does not consist of matter. We the
viewers, were irresistibly drawn to find out if Anne's stories were true. We were constantly filled

Alejandro Inarritu 's Mexican Thriller, Amores Perros Essay
"Fuck, he's bleeding to death!" (1:26) screams Jorge. Octavio accelerates on the gas even harder.
Octavio aggressively swerves through the congestion of cars. Octavio looks back and sees the
Dodge Ram directly behind their beater car. The man in the passenger seat of the Dodge pulls out a
gun and fires. Nervously, Octavio and Jorge duck. A school bus suddenly pulls up in front of their
car. Breaking abruptly, the bloody dog tumbles to the base of the car, and Octavio is able to flee the
scene. The Dodge is nowhere in sight. Octavio and Jorge shriek with excitement. They run a red
light. Another car suddenly appears from a corner, striking the two by surprise; and violently crashes
into the side of their car, initiating a brutal collision of destruction, flames, and blood–a great deal of
blood. The striking collision opens the scene to Alejandro Inarritu's Mexican thriller, Amores Perros
(2000). This crash presents the link to three unrelated narratives that are symbolically tied together
by the chaotic lifestyle of the modern day metropolis of Mexico City. Amores Perros is an
enthralling film that captures the socio– political themes regarding economic instability, social–
class, and gender in contemporary Mexico City. Mexico City throughout the twentieth century was

Critique Of Agora Critique
Agora Critique The 2009 feature film, Agora, which was directed by Alejandro Amenábar, depicts
the religious, political, and intellectual events in the city of Alexandria during the life of Hypatia, a
female philosopher. Since this film's primary goal is the entertainment of the audience rather than
accurate historical instruction, there are some fictitious or unproven details in the film that give an
erroneous impression of history to the common viewer. The movie gives a fair representation of the
turmoil within both pagan and Christian groups, but there is a slight bias towards the antagonization
of Christians. One way this prejudice takes shape is the film's failure to fairly represent the role of
St. Cyril of Alexandria amidst these chaotic times as it relates to his views on women in education,
his involvement in the death of Hypatia, and the expulsion of the Jews.
One aspect in which St. Cyril was wrongfully depicted was his attitude toward the role of women,
especially regarding their position in the world of academia. In the movie, Cyril reads a passage
from I Timothy which states that women should be submissive to men. He then attempts to pressure
Orestes into publicly condemning Hypatia for her involvement in political and intellectual affairs.
Women were thought to be inferior to men back then, and some Christians during this time period
did denounce intellectualism, believing that only God's Word was necessary. St. Cyril, however, did
not appear to share

Rachel Weisz is best known for The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and Oz the Great and Powerful.
Max Minghella is best known for The Social Network, The Ides of March, and The Internship.
Oscar Isaac has is best known for Inside Llewyn Davis, Ex Machina, and Star Wars: The Force

The movie is a historical drama set in ancient Egypt under Roman Rule during the 4th century A.D.
Agora follows the beautiful and brilliant Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) who is an astronomer, philosopher,
and mathematician. She leads a group of students who are fighting to save the wisdom of the
Ancient World, as the war between the Pagans and Christians overflow into the streets of
Alexandria. Among her students is the amusing yet privileged Orestes (Oscar Isaac) who is
competing with Davus (Max Minghella), Hypatia's young slave, for her heart. Davus becomes torn
between his secret love of Hypatia and the freedom he could have if he joins the rising Christians.
Agora does contain a number of historical inaccuracies. Among these are:
Hypatia's age (she was closer to 50 or 60 years old), her realization of the heliocentric universe,
invention of the astrolabe and hydrometer, and the manner in which she died (the historical records

The Film The Others ( 2001 ) By Alejandro Amenabar
The film The Others (2001) by Alejandro Amenábar is a ghost story based around a family that
believes they are being haunted by spirits in their home but come to realize they have already died
and are haunting the new family that moved to the house. The title of the film refers to servants that
abandoned the house and is used constantly throughout the film to reference the intruders and other
spirits the original family believe are residing there. The main lesson to be learned from the film is
that things are never as they appear which is proven when we find out that the mother, Grace, killed
her own children and is a ghost along with her children. Since Grace is a ghost attempting to live in
a world where her children are alive, she is living in the past which we find out leads to her
breakdown when she finds out she is already dead. This theme of living in the past can also be found
in Our Town, which is another ghost story.
Our Town (1938) by Thornton Wilder is a play centered around the American lifestyle in 1901 that
follows two people as they grow up together, get married and eventually pass away. Each of the
three acts showcase a different period in Emily's and George's life until Emily dies during childbirth
at the beginning of the third act. Then the play shifts to Emily's life as a ghost as she reflects back on
life and learns that you cannot repeat the past. This play, like The Others, features invisible people

One reason why the plot is able to effectively create suspense is through utilizing foreshadowing.
For example, the film opens with Grace, the mother, screaming as Grace wakes up, foreshadowing
fear in the movie. In addition, the dialogue plays a role in foreshadowing as well, such the repeated
allusions to the "day [Grace] went mad". As Grace slowly uncovers clues as to what is going on in
the house, the repeated sightings of doors being unlocked and sounds being made keep the audience
on the edge of their seats. Specifically, the incident when Grace hears piano music being played in
the middle of the night fully cements in the audience's mind that there are ghosts without revealing
the true identity or purpose of the ghosts, adding suspense rather than answering questions.
However, when it is revealed that Grace, Anne, and Nicholas are, in fact, ghosts and the other family
is alive provides a tie–in to all of the suspense. Suddenly, even the smallest detail, such as
descriptions of the old lady who can connect with spirits, comes to the audience's mind to add
validity to the twist. All in all, the strange occurrences in the house that take place in the plot
continually generate suspense throughout the

Essay about Challenges Faced by Immigrants
Challenges Faced by Immigrants
The changing environments throughout the ages have caused the movement of thousands of families
out of their homelands. Whether forced to make such decisions or doing so by their own desires, all
immigrants have had to survive the physical and psychological challenges encountered along the
way. To speak about the experiences of all these different people using the same ideas and examples
would be quite inaccurate. They all, however, had to live through similar situations and deal with
similar problems. Many of them succeeded and found the better future they were looking for. Many

Many immigrants feel the same way about the things they leave. I know I did when I left my home

was thirteen. I still remember the day we left and how hard it was for my whole family. Through
tears, I said goodbye to all my relatives and friends whom I cherished and loved. I felt as if the
whole world was closing up in me. I was being taken away from everything I knew and everything I
loved. The cool breeze of that autumn day rushed through me as if foreshadowing a hard and cold
future. The moment came for us to get on the plane. I wanted to stop time and run away, back to
everything I knew. But that was impossible; the choice of turning back did not exist. As I was going

The Theme Of Birdman
Radio presenter: Upon its release in 2014, Birdman was the topic of several debates; many admiring
the films unique cinematic techniques and the equivocal ending whilst leaving others to criticise the
overall ambiguity. Today, the film is still debated among audiences so we have invited Alejandro
Gonzalez Inarritu, the director of Birdman, to discuss the themes, values and techniques he wanted
to present within Birdman. Inarritu: Thanks for inviting me here. Presenter: One of the main themes
of Birdman is high art verse popular culture. How has this been explored throughout the film?
Inarritu: The theme of high art, 'theatre', verse popular culture, 'Hollywood' is explored through
Riggan Thomson whom symbolises Hollywood and his relationships with Mike and Tabitha,
symbolising theatre. Riggan is classified as a high profile actor but to regain his importance and to
ease his narcissism, he enters the theatre. Mike's preliminary scene establishes his antagonistic
persona and representation of theatre with the initial shot panning over the stage to focus on Mike,
whose silhouette is positioned on the edge of the stage in a dramatic pose. Consequently, Riggan is

Don Quijote and the Neuroscience of Metafiction Essay
Don Quijote and the Neuroscience of Metafiction
What is metafiction? Its original meaning was "a fiction that both creates an illusion and lays bare
that illusion."1 But the term has expanded and expanded to include any fiction that even mentions
the idea of fiction. That can cover a lot of things, starting with the
Iliad.2
I'd like to go back to the original idea. In my understanding, metafictions tell stories in which the
physical medium of the story becomes part of the story. Among contemporary writers of fiction one
could mention: my erstwhile colleagues John Barth, Donald Barthelme, and Ray Federman. Others
are Borges, Calvino, Nabokov, Umberto Eco, John Fowles,
Salman Rushdie, and on and on. Metafiction has become very ... Show more content on

Why "anxiety"?
A cute, short example of metafilm comes in the Marx Brothers' Horse Feathers.

Stephen King, and last but not least "The Others" which is based on a film by Alejandro Amenabar.
Characters in the stories all develop insanity in different ways, but the characters live there life not
knowing of their insanity, and those are Rainsford and Zaroff from "The Most Dangerous Games",
Pine from "Survivor Type", and Grace from "The Others". In the beginning characters are shown
who they are and what they do to protect themselves and others. But what they actually don't know

Therefore, this insanity that Grace didn't know about herself caused her to kill her children and
herself. This for that is because she did not want to remember what she did that caused her to be
insane. On the other hand, Grace wanted everyone to believe her when she was actually wrong the
whole time.
The second insanity story that shows the character becoming insane without knowing is the story
called "Survivor Type" by Stephen King. Basically throughout the beginning of the story Pine was
an employed worker. Before Pine became insane without him knowing he was a disgraced surgeon.
Pine mostly smuggle large quantity of heroin. As Pine travelled . Suddenly Pine found himself
stranded on a tiny island with limited supply and no food. Now readers understand how Pine is a
little bit insane at the beginning of the story because of what he is addicted to and how he hated his
family, mostly his father. "My father would laugh, call me crazy, and

How Does Amenabar Build Suspense In The Others
The Others is written by Noel Carroll and directed by Alejandro Amenabar. The movie talks about
how in New Jersey, 1945, a woman called Grace Stewart lives in an old house with her daughter
Anne and her son Nicholas. Grace lost her husband Charles in World War 2 and their children are
considered photosensitive. Grace keeps the curtains and the doors closed to protect Anne and
Nicholas from the sunlight. Grace raises her children very strictly making them very disciplined and
making them follow religious principles. Grace hires a housekeeper named Mrs. Bertha Mills, a
mute maid named Lydia, and a gardener named Mr. Edmund Tuttle. Suddenly, mysterious things
start happening in the house and Anne claims that there is a boy named Viktor that visits them.

The opening scene is all about silence when grace is sleeping in her bed and you expect that nothing
is going to happen, and then suddenly she wakes up from a nightmare screaming loudly. The first
scene shows us the outside of the house and how it looks like. It looks like it's isolated and kind of
creepy especially with the fog. Later on, the servants meet the children. Grace starts to lock all the
doors. Amenabar makes the movie seem scarier by reducing the lighting by making the servants shut
the curtains. This creates a lot of anxiety especially with the strong character of Grace. Grace's
character is shown as a very unhappy Catholic mother with very strict rules of manner for her
children and for the three new servants that suddenly appear on her doorstep. She is purposely
isolated from the outside world, short tempered, suffers from a lot of migraine headaches, and
wishes for the return of her husband from the war. She displays courage when she leaves the safety
of her house and goes to look for her husband in the thick fog that she is surrounded by, she also
grabs a shot gun to shoot an intruder in the house if she finds

Shutter Island Film Analysis
Statement of intent
The theme I am getting across is the affect of trauma and how it changes the way the individual acts.
The films I will be discussing are Shutter Island ( 2010) , The Others (2001) , Black Swan (2010)
and Gone Girl ( 2014). Another idea I would like to explore is the relationship between the
characters and how it changes throughout the film.
Introduction
The brain doesn't forget about a traumatic event. They only way to overcome it is to get treatment
for it at a hospital. When you do not get the treatment it may lead to depression and suicide. The
films I will be discussing are Shutter Island (2010) Martin Scorsese , The Others (2001) Alejandro
Amenabar,Black Swan (2010) Darren Aronofsky and Gone Girl (2001) David Fincher. I will be
discussing how these films showed the theme.
Living with guilt can have a negative effect on the individual. In Shutter Island Dolores could not
handle looking after the children on her own. This resulted in her drowning her children in the lake
at the back of their house. She had clinical depression, this meant that she started acting different
and that was caused that caused her to burn down the apartment. The flashback in the film showed
the apartment on fire Teddy decided to move to a house on a lake away from people and it was away
from everyone. The colours in the flashback were colourful. This means that they were happy when
they were happy. Similarly to Dolores , Grace also killed her children because she couldn't

The Red 's Backbone And The Other 's `` Tell Chilling...
Introduction; In the late 1960's to early 1970's Spain rose as one of the leading countries to dominate
the horror film genre. Struggling under a brutal and confining dictatorship for much of the 20th
century, Spanish cinema took a while to come together. During the hard days of General Franco's
regime a series of horror films, such as The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, a zombie classic,
were produced, mainly for the English market. In the remaining years under Franco, hundreds of
horror films were released, all of which were identified by their violence, eroticism, and
unrestrained cinematography. Spanish horror films such as, The Devil's Backbone and The Other's,
tell chilling ghost stories that go beyond the genre and successfully mix suspense, horror, and the
coming of age during the harsh wartime.
History of Spanish Horror: After General Franco's regime fell, a new wave of young directors, such
as Bigas Luna and Pedro Almodovar, basked in their newfound freedom of expression to produce
films that were unrestricted. In the 21st century, a more mature Spanish film industry had returned to
the horror genre in a big way. There have been many of box office horror film hits produced outside
of Spain with Spanish talent behind the camera, such as The Others. Spanish horror films had been
designed to appeal to international markets "due to a crisis in the Spanish film production that
prompted producers to seek profits in the established European distribution and exhibition

Suspense In The Others By Trojandro Amenabar
"The Others" written and directed by Alejandro Amenabar is a suspenseful horror film revolving
around the concepts of dissociation and denial. It is quite possibly the most unexpected ghost story
ever told on film and is very iconic in the horror genre for its many cloak–and–dagger twists.
The plotline centers within an old Victorian styled mansion located in the Isle of Jersey, England
during WWII from the viewpoint of a family that appears to live there. Three mysterious servants
arrive to the home after the previous servants are no where to be found, since their arrival a series of
strange incidents occur as they discover they are not alone. The implied plot is that the home is
haunted, at times scenes are shown in which there appears ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The fog plays an important role as Grace attempts to walk through it seeking a priest to rid her home
of what she believed to be "ghosts". However since they are dead Grace and her children are tied to
the house and the fog prevents them from going past a certain point. The mood or emotional
response experienced by the reader is a very important element that contributes to the overall
"whole".
This film borrows themes dealing with insanity and madness, which are direct extensions to the
overall concepts of dissociation and denial this film portrays. Grace introduces herself to the viewers
as a flawed, emotional and troubled woman. Which sets the mood for the viewer and contributes to
the overall impression.
The conflicts that arise appear to come from external sources but as the story is revealed we realize
these conflicts are actually representations of internal strife. In this way, the film utilizes person via
self while appearing to be person vs.

How Does Shakespeare 's King Lear And Alejandro Gonzalez...
How do Shakespeare's King Lear and Alejandro Gonzalez's Birdman use literary and film
techniques to explore the complex dynamics of power, social position, and age? Shakespeare and
Alejandro Gonzalez both successfully convey how an individual is treated due to their power, social
position, and age, in their respective texts King Lear and Birdman. Both portray the main character
as an individual who has lost their power and must overcome the challenges that come of this. These
characters also must endure society 's treatment of them due to their old age, especially from their
younger counterparts. The authors also exhibit how each individual is treated by society due to their
social position at the time. Both authors have the idea of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She then goes on to say that he is not the only one fighting to be relevant and that he is "terrified,
like the rest of us, that he doesn't matter". This dialogue signifies something that the audience fears,
being forgotten by society, and further conveys this to them by exhibiting a character that this
affects. A motif of nakedness is also incorporated in the film. This occurs when Riggan is about to
perform a preview of his production. He gets locked out of the back of the theatre and must run
through the streets in only his underwear. It is this scene though that provides Riggan his chance to
become relevant, as he is filmed by a pedestrian and uploaded to YouTube. It is later that Sam refers
to this video as "power" for Riggan. This just shows what is classed as power in the twenty–first
century, and the audience can understand this when looking at celebrities and their dominance on
social media. This motif of nakedness is also present in Shakespeare's King Lear. In this story,
Shakespeare writes of a king who gives his power to his daughters only for them to overthrow him
completely and banish him from the kingdom. However, unlike in Birdman where the character
gains power, this motif occurs to symbolize Lear's complete loss of power. As without his lavish
clothes that reveal his regal status, he is no different to a farmer. The crown that Lear wore is also
symbolic of his power. As when Lear splits his kingdom up in two for his daughters to rule,

Agora Analysis
The film Agora, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, is set in Alexandria Egypt around the year 400.
This time period is very soon after the legalization of the Christian religion in the Roman Empire,
and this fact is explicitly stated near the beginning of the movie. The plot follows the real–world
mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher Hypatia, although in the movie her age does not match
up with what it would have truly been at the time of the events which are depicted, including her
murder. She is shown as being consistently young throughout the movie although her murder
actually took place when she was in her fifties or her sixties. Two other key figures are Orestes and
St. Cyril the Christian Patriarch of Alexandria. The movie features the political struggle between
Orestes and St. Cyril as its central conflict along with the secondary conflicts of paganism and
Judaism versus Christianity. The main idea that the director seems to have intended for his audience
is that religion is opposed to civilized behavior and to intellectual and scientific progress. This is
made evident by his distortion of historical facts to fit his bias which will be discussed later. The
film was recorded on the island of Malta and was released in 2009. At that time and continuing into
the present day, entertainment media contained a noticeable anti–religious sentiment. That sentiment
is clearly expressed in this movie as religious people are consistently portrayed as stupid,
unthinking, and

Normality within Society
"Normality is to be different. Every person is a different person. And one day you need to be aware
of your difference. Aware that you are not the same as the others. That is to be normal." Through his
quote, Alejandro Jodorowsky creates a reflection upon what he thinks the idea of normality in
society should be. ("Alejandro Jodorowsky Quotes." BrainyQuote.com). In the Curious Incident of
the Dog in the Night–Time, Haddon alludes the idealistic thoughts on normality in today's society.
In the world today, society expects the individuals to conform to what is thought to be normal. As
humans, one strives to adapt to societal standards. Normality within society is considered something
different for those that refuse ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Next, Through Christopher's understanding of relationships, Haddon unveils the reality of the
idealistic thoughts of normality in society. Society thinks a relationship is to mutually love and
respect and trust one another. It's considered "normal" to show affection if you care for someone.
Christopher has an inability to express his feelings of love. "And Father said, 'Christopher do you
understand that I love you?' And I said 'Yes', because loving someone is helping them when they get
into trouble, and looking after them, and telling the truth," (87) Despite the normality society has put
on relationships, every person has their own opinion on how a relationship works. The normality of
relationships is only an ideal standard. Contrary to what most believe as a typical relationship, some
don't express their thoughts and feelings in the same way. Haddon shows his readers that just
because there are standards to what a relationship should be like, doesn't mean everyone has to abide
by those standards. The love Christopher's parents have for him is one– sided, they can't expect him
to feel the same way. (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night–Time). Normality is a standard
and the standard society has on relationships are unattainable considering all people are different.
Lastly, Haddon lets us into Christopher's world and allows us to be able to understand Christopher.
He uses Christophers language and communication to unveil the reality of the idealistic thoughts

Isolation In Shutster Island, And Shutter Island :...
Developing mental illness and traumas in the brain can in some cases lead to changes in personality
and trigger symptoms of illness, drug or alcohol abuse can contribute as well. Isolation can assist in
a person's mental well–being, for example mental instability and hallucinations also brings out fear,
anger, anxiety and sadness. The four films I have chosen are psychological thrillers which all deal
with some form of isolation and all feature mental illness. The films are Shutter Island by Martin
Scorsese (2010), The Others by Alejandro Amenabar (2001), Black Swan by Darren Aronofsky
(2010) and Secret Window by David Koepp (2004). In today's society mental illness has become far
more common than in the past when they had no idea how to deal with it. Mental illness leads to
people causing harm to themselves or others leaving their humanity trapped deep inside.
Being isolated leads people to be mentally unstable and come up with outrageous conclusions
making them believe they need to create another reality. In Shutter Island and Black Swan isolation
heightened the main characters need for a better life. Andrew Laeddis needed his relationship with
his wife so much he chose to ignore her attempts of suicide "After she tried to kill herself the first
time, Dolores told me she... she had an insect living inside her brain. She could feel it clicking
across her skull, just... pulling the wires, just for fun. She told me that. She told me that but I didn't
listen. I loved her so much." this was said when Andrew finally accepted reality of the trauma he has
experienced. In Black Swan however Nina's mother refused to let go therefore isolating Nina from
experiencing important aspects of life, Nina's mother Erica stop her from growing up by not
allowing her to choose what her room looks like, Nina was in her mid–twenties and her room was
pink with several stuffed toys and dolls, in the centre of the room a small single sized bed with pink
covers, looks as though a six year old lived there. Nina's room reflected Nina's mind set, she was
physically isolated because her mind wasn't the mind of a dancer in her twenties she was treated like
she was twelve and she knew it, "It's called privacy, I'm not 12 anymore!" Nina

Crips And Bloods Film Summary
The second film directed by Stacy Peralta that I have scene is Crips and Bloods: Made in America.
Just like his other documentary films, this film takes a historical perspective. I was introduced to this
film last month when we were covering historical documentaries. I believe that I had seen parts of
this documentary but I had never watched the entire film until now. Crips and Bloods: Made in
America was released in 2008 and explores the origins of the Crips and Bloods, two of the most
prominent gangs found all over America. The films run time is about the same as Dogtown and Z–
Boys, at ninety–three minutes. Forest Whitaker is the narrator for this film. Instead of just focuses
on the gangs and their impact, the film focuses on the different ... Show more content on

This technique might be associated with Peralta's authorship, but I have not seen enough of his films
to determine that. I also noticed the sped up interview sections in this film as well. I believe that the
fancy editing and animations are to meant to keep the viewer interested by presenting the message in
a visually compelling way to hold the audience's attention. In order for the filmmakers to understand
how each group worked on a very personal level, they had to immerse themselves in the scenes
directly. Before beginning production, Peralta spent months hanging in these neighborhoods
WITHOUT a camera, trying to establish relationships and gain peoples trust, as well as looking for
interviewees. This effort is shown when Peralta can get some of these guys to open up and talk
about things that they would not normally talk about. Patience and communication were absolutely
critical in achieving that level of trust. He is not telling the stories from his perspective, because he
did not experience it. Instead, he is giving a platform to these gang members and member of the
community to share their opinions and beliefs. There were also people questioning Peralta's
credibility, suggesting that a white former surfer/skateboarder has no type of relation to the gang
culture of South Central La and that he does not fit to tell the story. People also criticized the film
because they think that it is an exaggeration of what was/is really going on in South Central LA.
Another concern was that this film is one sided and depicts the police, institutions and organizations
as the culprits for why our black communities have suffered thanks to gang violence. The film did
not really mention anything about the mechanics of the gang lifestyle. Why not? I do think that there
could have been some information included about the structure of the gangs and their daily

Ted Hughes conflicting perspectives
Conflicting Perspectives Essay
Composers deliberately manipulate conflicting perspectives in order to achieve their purpose. This
may be a unanimous truth amongst composers whether it is to attract sympathy, inform the
responder, or to make a comment on the functioning and morality of society. In order to achieve
their purpose, composers deliberately manipulate responder's conflicting perspectives so that they
will have the same perspective as them. Ted Hughes utilises the subjective nature of the textual form
of poetry so as to evoke a certain response to sympathise with him and relieve himself of any guilt
in his collection of poetry, "Birthday Letters". "The Sea Inside", a 2000 Spanish film based on a true
story, directed by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A tone of underlying resentment towards Plath is felt by the responder by this mocking description
following her death which suggests that he may feel responsible and further attempts to manipulate
the responder's perspective in order to clear him of this guilt.
Alejandro Amenabar uses film techniques and characterisation in order to subtly manipulate the
audience's response which is one is one of sympathy. His purpose in making the film was more than
to merely place his own perspectives to the audience but instead to inform the responder and lead
them to make their own decisions based on the knowledge gained through the film. Based on a true
story, the main character Ramon became a paraplegic during a diving accident and after twenty–five
years of being bed–ridden, he wishes to end his life through euthanasia. This character attracts the
most sympathy in the film as he is the main protagonist of the film, intentionally done so by
Amenabar in order to persuade the responder to side with him. Due to the very controversial nature
of the issue, he attempts to maintain indifferent in his approach to informing the responder about the
severity of euthanasia, reflecting society's stance on the matter. His use of high panning angles to
mimic flying during one of Ramon's dream sequences shows vast landscapes expressing his
innermost desires which

Symbolism In The Film The Others
In his classic film The Others, Alejandro Amenábar questions the nature of religion, life and death,
and reality in a shockingly beautiful way. He handles symbolism masterfully, using classic motifs
such as light and dark and haunted houses to get his point across further. Ignorant of their death at
first, the children, who were in their lifetime allergic to light, avoided it at all costs. Light, often, is
used as a symbol for truth: a guiding light for those who fumble about in the darkness. This is the
same case in The Others. They fought to stay in the darkness and remain ignorant, but after
discovering that they were dead all along, the light becomes good to them, even beautiful, and they
welcome it. This obviously represents the truth

The Most Dangerous Game Insanity Examples

  • 1. The Most Dangerous Game Insanity Examples Many stories have a horror theme, which show characters becoming insane. Examples of insanity stories are, "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, "Survivor Type" by Stephen King, and last but not least "The Others" which is based on a film by Alejandro Amenabar. Characters in the stories all develop insanity in different ways, but the characters live there life not knowing of their insanity, and those are Rainsford and Zaroff from "The Most Dangerous Games", Pine from "Survivor Type", and Grace from "The Others". In the beginning, characters are shown who they are and protecting what they love most, which is family and their own life. Throughout the story characters go extreme in protecting what they love, leading them to insanity. Therefore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main character which is Rainsford is a big–game hunter, Rainsford doesn't care about his prey. All he wants is to kill and hunt. Now from that point of view, readers can see the little bit of insanity in Rainsford by all that aggressive hunting stuff that he does. Rainsford was on a yacht and fell off of it, he ended up swimming to a rocky shore which was called Ship–Trap Island. This island was all about hunting which basically what Rainsford is, a hunter. Before Rainsford fell from the yacht he was with his friend name Whitney, saw an island which was the Ship– Trap Island, this island was a bad and unlucky place for many thing that happened. As Rainsford and Whitney were passing the island, Rainsford said, "I hold the jaguar guns have come from Prudey's. We should have some good hunting up the Amazon. Great sport, hunting" (Connell, 1). Throughout the part when Rainsford is on the island he saw the general and his name was Zaroff. Zaroff was those types of general that always wants to win, Zaroff read Rainsford's hunting book and told him " I've read your book about hunting snow leopards in Tibet, you see"(4). As for Rainsford all he wants is for him winning the game. The only thing that could make Rainsford escape is to hunt and try to win, when actually Zaroff wants him to lose. • 3. Critical Analysis On Spanish Horror Films Shannon Stone 12–11–14 FEA 460 Spanish Cinema Final Paper Critical Analysis on Spanish Horror Films From the late 1960's to the early 1970's Spain rose as one of the leading countries to dominate the horror film genre. Struggling under a brutal and confining dictatorship for much of the 20th century, the horror genre of Spanish cinema took awhile to come together. During the difficult and challenging days of General Franco's regime a limited series of horror films were produced, mainly for the English market. In the later years under Franco, hundreds of horror films were released. All were identified for their violence, eroticism, and unrestrained cinematography. Recently, 21st century Spanish horror films, such as The Devil's Backbone and The Others, tell chilling ghost stories that go beyond horror genre and successfully mix suspense, horror, and coming of age techniques, during the harsh wartime, using sound, lighting, editing, and innovative camera work. After General Franco's regime fell, a new wave of young directors such as Bigas Luna and Pedro Almodovar basked in their newfound freedom of expression to produce films that were unrestricted and independent. In the 21st century, a more mature Spanish film industry had returned to the horror genre in a big way. There have been many box office horror film hits produced outside of Spain with Spanish talent behind the camera, such as The Others. Spanish horror films had been designed to appeal to international markets ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Conflict In Amores Perros Mexico doesn't exist. Mexico is a collection of regions, a mosaic united by force. And now that the nationalism of the revolution, that project has shattered, what brings us together? Football? Criticising Carlos Salinas? Nothing more (media representative, Mexico, 2000). Amores Perros, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu is a dark, multi–plot film never seems to lose it's hold on you. The grime within the film, carried by it's subject matter makes for a very compelling watch. The three storylines we see interlink excellently, constantly showing you the way these characters lives link up with one another. From the beginning, we see the life of the Mexican characters seem to represented by some form of conflict. The intense action of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The three aspects of the film are in some form, against the normality's. We see the Illegal Dog Fighting, The life of an Assassin, and then a Cheating Husband. This questions the point of authority in "Amores Perros" as it seems that there is no real consequence for these people's actions, other than the loss of their dog, or their spirit animal. A prime example of this is when Valeria's dog, Richie is trapped under the floorboards of her house, this can be viewed as a reflection of her position in life at that time, her cheating with Daniel, and the fact she loses the opportunity to be a model, is represented by the Dog being trapped under the floor. However, even with this small reprimanding of each character it still poses the question of authority in the Film. Iñárittu comments on Immigration heavily in his personal life. This can be seen also in "Amores Perros" as each of the characters are seen as "outcasts" to the world, with the exception of Valeria. Despite this, Iñárittu makes each character really interesting, making the mundane important, Highlighting the pandemic of Immigration seen in Mexico, Iñárittu is quoted to have ... • 7. Film Analysis: The Others I remember watching this film for the first time back in 2001 when it was released and having not watched it in over a decade, I feel I can say that this film is still solid. The Others holds up so well due to the film relying on storytelling, atmosphere and sense of impending doom to create its tension. The Others is one of the rare big budget, well cast horror films that seem to pop up every couple of years and I love it when they do. I feel horror often gets the short end of the stick when it comes to Hollywood. The Others follows Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman) along with her two children Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley). Grace is a devout Catholic and does what she can to impress her beliefs onto her children. Both children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 9. Regression Movie Psychology Rating: 2 Set in Minnesota in the 1990s and supposedly based on true events, Regression threatens more thrill than it can deliver. The dim lit, oil stained sequences follow Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) as he investigates the case of Angela Grey (Emma Watson)– a young woman whose father John (David Dencik) confesses to having sexually abused her, even though he has no specific memory of the crime. Inferring that John has gone into denial, Bruce enlists the help of Dr Raines (David Thewlis), an English hypnotherapist who uses regression therapy on both father and daughter to draw out memories of the crime. As they delve it is uncovered that Angela was an unwilling participant and victim of satanic ritual abuses. A host of other parties come under suspicion including Kenner's colleague Nesbitt (Aaron Ashmore), Angela's distressed grandmother Rose (Dale Dickey) and her runaway ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The central theme is incredibly ignorant, and really makes no sense. Regression fails by trying to focus too much on the lack–of–proof nature of regression. The compelling ideas of influence, suggestibility and irrational bias when applied to memory and perception under trauma are quite interesting – but those aspects are not explored with any insight whatsoever. The style and tone of the movie shift in a very baffling fashion. On the one hand, this is a drama about mass paranoia, false memory, superstition and the power of suggestion. On the other, it has sustained instances of a horror movie. The healthy sprinkling of undesirable creepy faces, Cup–a–Soup, ominous tomcats and close ups of hooded creatures do not do anything to alleviate the plot. The brash background score by Roque Baños is a rather corny and unsubtle affair. The few flourishes of psychological thrill in the movie are purely visual. To his credit, Daniel Aranyó's high contrast cinematography delivers a convincing '90s postmodern horror ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Narrative Elements Of Horror Almost every genre of film to date has been designed and developed to make an audience feel satisfied or sexed up and in love or delighted or inspired or rushed with adrenaline. Horror, on the other hand, was the first genre that preyed on the audience's deepest fears and utilized them to provide cinema with nightmare flair. And everybody loved it. The idea of this essay is to address the nightmarish absurdity that horror is so well known for. I will consider the development of the genre, as well as explore the stylistic, thematic and narrative elements of the genre; including discourse on the visuals, the symbolisms and the subject matter in addition to any impact the genre had on the audience, and address what role said impact had in defining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The term body horror was first coined in 1986 in an issue of the film magazine Screen. The films of this subgenre concentrate on the human body and the horror of estrangement from within. Defined, body horror is: Such destruction or generation of the human body can be as a result of anything from alien life forces to genetic mutations, viruses, diseases etc. Much of this subgenre was to do with society's body–anxiety and body–consciousness and also explores identity and humanity. (Class notes: Body Horror) Though these films address such valid points, they also strive to create a swelling unease in the viewer and an awkward discomfort the viewer's body. The intent is to provoke sickness, revulsion, and abhorrence in the audience. Eraserhead, without a doubt, succeeds in achieving all of the above. This film is such a significant, sweeping example of the far–reaching horror genre. Expressionism's influence on this genre is so captivatingly portrayed in the film, to the extent that many of the shots, throughout the entire film, look just like works of German Expressionist art. ... • 13. An Independent Woman in the Film, Agora When I was reading "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," I noticed how Paul portrayed an aspect I had appreciated while watching the film Agora. As I watched the film Agora I noticed how in contrast to the other movies we have seen in class the female character was not defined by her relationship with men. For example, in the film Cleopatra, the female lead Cleopatra was defined in terms of her relationship with men. Even though Cleopatra was involved in politics, she and to win the love of Antony and Caesar in order to get power. Paul states this idea in "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," when he states that Hypatia "cannot be defined primarily through her relationships with men." (Paul, "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," 230) As I watched the film Agora, I noticed how Hypatia voiced her opinion in front of men with no fear and appreciated the scenes which portrayed her findings. For example, in the scene in which Hypatia is with Aspasius and discovers the model of the ellipse, the heliocentric model. To me, to have an Ancient Roman film portray the intelligence of a women was a positive aspect of the movie Agora. Also, her students in the film, such as Synesius and Orestes were loyal to her and tried to help her in the end of the film. Hypatia's bravery is also portrayed in the scene in which "in class, she presents him with her bloodied menstrual rag, telling him that there is little harmony or beauty in the ... How Does Amenabar Create Suspense 'The others' directed by, Alejandro Amenabar is a haunted house themed ghost story, which creates a thrilling atmosphere as Amenabar emphasizes a combination of uncertainty, tension, suspense and shock. Amenabar creates an atmosphere, which has the time and patience to generate a mood and create mystery to the characters. The setting Amenabar has chosen is very cliché and fits into the horror theme perfectly being a large house, which is trapped in fog. Amenabar also adds mystery to the characters as the two children are extremely sensitive to light and can only confine in only the dark. Amenabar let's the audiences use their imaginations to put the film together and make sense of it, which is really what thriller/horror films need. Using different melodies and sound affects along with different camera angles and viewpoints 'the opening scene' of Grace screaming, the 'storage room scene' and 'the bedroom scene' all support the evidence of atmosphere and suspense. Gothic Elements consist of dark atmospheres, the supernatural, uncanny figures, damsel in distress, physiological breakdown, and many other elements. Elements of gothic literature are usually not used in a literal sense; authors usually use metaphors to get the aspect of gothic literature across to the audience. Elements of gothic literature are presented throughout the book Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, and the film "The Others", by Alejandro Amenábar. In the book, the governess constantly tells about her concern that the children are in danger. In the book, James writes, "Dear little Miles, dear little Miles, if you knew how I want to help you! It's only that, it's nothing but that, and I'd rather die than give you a pain or do you a wrong"; this shows the governesses helpless obsession with trying to keep the children safe (108). In this conversation with Miles, the governess is trying to get him to tell her Quint blew out the candles but Miles replies that it was him (James 108). The first seduction scene in Tesis happened in Angela's (Ana Torrent) bedroom. Opening the door of her bedroom, Angel expressed her discomfort of being on camera to Bosco (Eduardo Noriega) who showed up uninvited. The Bosco character was clearly one of the ways Tesis used to "challenge Hollywood's hegemony by co–opting its methods and improving upon them" (Buckley, 3). He had all the Hollywood star quality, but he is also a psychopath. The camera panned right as Bosco returned to his position, showing a creepy grim on his face. Accompanied by disturbing non–diegetic music, he quickly closed the bind and commanded Angela to sit on her bed for better lighting. Angela rushed through her script, but Bosco wanted to record her closer and started to move closer to her while she was protesting his action. We begin to feel horribly uncomfortable at how angry Grace becomes with her daughter, and slightly creeped out by what's going through Anne's head when it comes to her ghost stories. Octavio aggressively swerves through the congestion of cars. Octavio looks back and sees the Dodge Ram directly behind their beater car. The man in the passenger seat of the Dodge pulls out a gun and fires. Nervously, Octavio and Jorge duck. A school bus suddenly pulls up in front of their car. Breaking abruptly, the bloody dog tumbles to the base of the car, and Octavio is able to flee the scene. The Dodge is nowhere in sight. Octavio and Jorge shriek with excitement. They run a red light. Another car suddenly appears from a corner, striking the two by surprise; and violently crashes into the side of their car, initiating a brutal collision of destruction, flames, and blood–a great deal of blood. The striking collision opens the scene to Alejandro Inarritu's Mexican thriller, Amores Perros (2000). • 25. Critique Of Agora Critique Agora Critique The 2009 feature film, Agora, which was directed by Alejandro Amenábar, depicts the religious, political, and intellectual events in the city of Alexandria during the life of Hypatia, a female philosopher. Since this film's primary goal is the entertainment of the audience rather than accurate historical instruction, there are some fictitious or unproven details in the film that give an erroneous impression of history to the common viewer. The movie gives a fair representation of the turmoil within both pagan and Christian groups, but there is a slight bias towards the antagonization of Christians. One way this prejudice takes shape is the film's failure to fairly represent the role of St. Cyril of Alexandria amidst these chaotic times as it relates to his views on women in education, his involvement in the death of Hypatia, and the expulsion of the Jews. One aspect in which St. Cyril was wrongfully depicted was his attitude toward the role of women, especially regarding their position in the world of academia. In the movie, Cyril reads a passage from I Timothy which states that women should be submissive to men. He then attempts to pressure Orestes into publicly condemning Hypatia for her involvement in political and intellectual affairs. Women were thought to be inferior to men back then, and some Christians during this time period did denounce intellectualism, believing that only God's Word was necessary. Oscar Isaac has is best known for Inside Llewyn Davis, Ex Machina, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Director Alejandro Amenábar has written and directed many films including Open Your Eyes, The Others, and The Sea Inside. The movie is a historical drama set in ancient Egypt under Roman Rule during the 4th century A.D. Agora follows the beautiful and brilliant Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) who is an astronomer, philosopher, and mathematician. She leads a group of students who are fighting to save the wisdom of the Ancient World, as the war between the Pagans and Christians overflow into the streets of Alexandria. Among her students is the amusing yet privileged Orestes (Oscar Isaac) who is competing with Davus (Max Minghella), Hypatia's young slave, for her heart. Davus becomes torn between his secret love of Hypatia and the freedom he could have if he joins the rising Christians. Agora does contain a number of historical inaccuracies. Among these are: Hypatia's age (she was closer to 50 or 60 years old), her realization of the heliocentric universe, invention of the astrolabe and hydrometer, and the manner in which she died (the historical records state she was beaten and flayed to death by a mob of ... • 29. The Film The Others ( 2001 ) By Alejandro Amenabar The film The Others (2001) by Alejandro Amenábar is a ghost story based around a family that believes they are being haunted by spirits in their home but come to realize they have already died and are haunting the new family that moved to the house. The title of the film refers to servants that abandoned the house and is used constantly throughout the film to reference the intruders and other spirits the original family believe are residing there. The main lesson to be learned from the film is that things are never as they appear which is proven when we find out that the mother, Grace, killed her own children and is a ghost along with her children. Since Grace is a ghost attempting to live in a world where her children are alive, she is living in the past which we find out leads to her breakdown when she finds out she is already dead. This theme of living in the past can also be found in Our Town, which is another ghost story. Our Town (1938) by Thornton Wilder is a play centered around the American lifestyle in 1901 that follows two people as they grow up together, get married and eventually pass away. Each of the three acts showcase a different period in Emily's and George's life until Emily dies during childbirth at the beginning of the third act. Then the play shifts to Emily's life as a ghost as she reflects back on life and learns that you cannot repeat the past. Though what truly captures the mind of the human population about haunted houses cannot be explained or identified, the occurrence is definitely a popular subject. Whether it be storytelling, movies, or parties, the idea of spirits haunting people proves to be one of the most successful forms of entertainment. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One reason why the plot is able to effectively create suspense is through utilizing foreshadowing. For example, the film opens with Grace, the mother, screaming as Grace wakes up, foreshadowing fear in the movie. In addition, the dialogue plays a role in foreshadowing as well, such the repeated allusions to the "day [Grace] went mad". As Grace slowly uncovers clues as to what is going on in the house, the repeated sightings of doors being unlocked and sounds being made keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Specifically, the incident when Grace hears piano music being played in the middle of the night fully cements in the audience's mind that there are ghosts without revealing the true identity or purpose of the ghosts, adding suspense rather than answering questions. However, when it is revealed that Grace, Anne, and Nicholas are, in fact, ghosts and the other family is alive provides a tie–in to all of the suspense. Suddenly, even the smallest detail, such as descriptions of the old lady who can connect with spirits, comes to the audience's mind to add validity to the twist. All in all, the strange occurrences in the house that take place in the plot continually generate suspense throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Essay about Challenges Faced by Immigrants Challenges Faced by Immigrants The changing environments throughout the ages have caused the movement of thousands of families out of their homelands. Whether forced to make such decisions or doing so by their own desires, all immigrants have had to survive the physical and psychological challenges encountered along the way. To speak about the experiences of all these different people using the same ideas and examples would be quite inaccurate. They all, however, had to live through similar situations and deal with similar problems. Many of them succeeded and found the better future they were looking for. Many others found only hardship and experienced the destruction of their hopes and dreams. All of them were transformed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many immigrants feel the same way about the things they leave. I know I did when I left my home country of Bulgaria. My parents were hoping to provide my brother and me with a brighter future by moving to the US, the country where anything is possible, or so everyone said. It was 1998 and I was thirteen. I still remember the day we left and how hard it was for my whole family. Through tears, I said goodbye to all my relatives and friends whom I cherished and loved. I felt as if the whole world was closing up in me. I was being taken away from everything I knew and everything I loved. The cool breeze of that autumn day rushed through me as if foreshadowing a hard and cold future. The moment came for us to get on the plane. I wanted to stop time and run away, back to everything I knew. But that was impossible; the choice of turning back did not exist. As I was going up the stairs of the plane, I looked around at the airport and its surroundings. I looked and saw the warmth and light of the familiar places. I took a deep breath of the air around me, knowing it was the last time I could sense it, and went in. It really was hard for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. The Theme Of Birdman Radio presenter: Upon its release in 2014, Birdman was the topic of several debates; many admiring the films unique cinematic techniques and the equivocal ending whilst leaving others to criticise the overall ambiguity. Today, the film is still debated among audiences so we have invited Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, the director of Birdman, to discuss the themes, values and techniques he wanted to present within Birdman. Inarritu: Thanks for inviting me here. Presenter: One of the main themes of Birdman is high art verse popular culture. How has this been explored throughout the film? Inarritu: The theme of high art, 'theatre', verse popular culture, 'Hollywood' is explored through Riggan Thomson whom symbolises Hollywood and his relationships with Mike and Tabitha, symbolising theatre. Riggan is classified as a high profile actor but to regain his importance and to ease his narcissism, he enters the theatre. Mike's preliminary scene establishes his antagonistic persona and representation of theatre with the initial shot panning over the stage to focus on Mike, whose silhouette is positioned on the edge of the stage in a dramatic pose. Consequently, Riggan is removed from the frame, illustrating Mike's supremacy. Mike's silhouette is defined from the main source of light a theatrical ghost lamp, instantaneously captivating the audience. As the scene continues, the camera predominately focuses on Mike whom consumes majority of the frame opposing Riggan in the corner of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Don Quijote and the Neuroscience of Metafiction Essay Don Quijote and the Neuroscience of Metafiction What is metafiction? Its original meaning was "a fiction that both creates an illusion and lays bare that illusion."1 But the term has expanded and expanded to include any fiction that even mentions the idea of fiction. That can cover a lot of things, starting with the Iliad.2 I'd like to go back to the original idea. In my understanding, metafictions tell stories in which the physical medium of the story becomes part of the story. Among contemporary writers of fiction one could mention: my erstwhile colleagues John Barth, Donald Barthelme, and Ray Federman. Others are Borges, Calvino, Nabokov, Umberto Eco, John Fowles, Salman Rushdie, and on and on. Metafiction has become very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the plot develops, the writers of the film become characters in the (fictional) film that they are writing and I am watching. Adaptation, writes its New York Times reviewer, A. O. Scott, "is . . . a movie about its own nonexistence." Scott describes his reaction in terms like "panic," "frantic anxiety," or "paranoid."3 Like Scott, I too feel dizzy and uncertain––and delighted at this toying with levels of reality. But why "panic"? Why "anxiety"? A cute, short example of metafilm comes in the Marx Brothers' Horse Feathers. Groucho turns to the camera, that is, the audience––us––and comments on the movie he is in: "I've gotta stay here, but there's no reason you folks shouldn't go out in the lobby till this thing blows over." You can create such an exotic effect even with criticism. One of my favorites in the world of metafiction occurs in a comical book by Charles Simmons called Powdered Eggs. The examples of those types of insanity stories are, "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, "Survivor Type" by Stephen King, and last but not least "The Others" which is based on a film by Alejandro Amenabar. Characters in the stories all develop insanity in different ways, but the characters live there life not knowing of their insanity, and those are Rainsford and Zaroff from "The Most Dangerous Games", Pine from "Survivor Type", and Grace from "The Others". The movie talks about how in New Jersey, 1945, a woman called Grace Stewart lives in an old house with her daughter Anne and her son Nicholas. Grace lost her husband Charles in World War 2 and their children are considered photosensitive. Grace keeps the curtains and the doors closed to protect Anne and Nicholas from the sunlight. Grace raises her children very strictly making them very disciplined and making them follow religious principles. Grace starts to lock all the doors. Amenabar makes the movie seem scarier by reducing the lighting by making the servants shut the curtains. This creates a lot of anxiety especially with the strong character of Grace. Grace's character is shown as a very unhappy Catholic mother with very strict rules of manner for her children and for the three new servants that suddenly appear on her doorstep. She is purposely isolated from the outside world, short tempered, suffers from a lot of migraine headaches, and wishes for the return of her husband from the war. • 43. Shutter Island Film Analysis Statement of intent The theme I am getting across is the affect of trauma and how it changes the way the individual acts. The films I will be discussing are Shutter Island ( 2010) , The Others (2001) , Black Swan (2010) and Gone Girl ( 2014). Another idea I would like to explore is the relationship between the characters and how it changes throughout the film. Introduction The brain doesn't forget about a traumatic event. They only way to overcome it is to get treatment for it at a hospital. When you do not get the treatment it may lead to depression and suicide. The films I will be discussing are Shutter Island (2010) Martin Scorsese , The Others (2001) Alejandro Amenabar,Black Swan (2010) Darren Aronofsky and Gone Girl (2001) David Fincher. I will be discussing how these films showed the theme. Living with guilt can have a negative effect on the individual. In Shutter Island Dolores could not handle looking after the children on her own. This resulted in her drowning her children in the lake at the back of their house. She had clinical depression, this meant that she started acting different and that was caused that caused her to burn down the apartment. The flashback in the film showed the apartment on fire Teddy decided to move to a house on a lake away from people and it was away from everyone. The colours in the flashback were colourful. • 45. The Red 's Backbone And The Other 's `` Tell Chilling... Introduction; In the late 1960's to early 1970's Spain rose as one of the leading countries to dominate the horror film genre. Struggling under a brutal and confining dictatorship for much of the 20th century, Spanish cinema took a while to come together. During the hard days of General Franco's regime a series of horror films, such as The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, a zombie classic, were produced, mainly for the English market. In the remaining years under Franco, hundreds of horror films were released, all of which were identified by their violence, eroticism, and unrestrained cinematography. Spanish horror films such as, The Devil's Backbone and The Other's, tell chilling ghost stories that go beyond the genre and successfully mix suspense, horror, and the coming of age during the harsh wartime. History of Spanish Horror: After General Franco's regime fell, a new wave of young directors, such as Bigas Luna and Pedro Almodovar, basked in their newfound freedom of expression to produce films that were unrestricted. In the 21st century, a more mature Spanish film industry had returned to the horror genre in a big way. There have been many of box office horror film hits produced outside of Spain with Spanish talent behind the camera, such as The Others. Spanish horror films had been designed to appeal to international markets "due to a crisis in the Spanish film production that prompted producers to seek profits in the established European distribution and exhibition ... It is quite possibly the most unexpected ghost story ever told on film and is very iconic in the horror genre for its many cloak–and–dagger twists. The plotline centers within an old Victorian styled mansion located in the Isle of Jersey, England during WWII from the viewpoint of a family that appears to live there. Three mysterious servants arrive to the home after the previous servants are no where to be found, since their arrival a series of strange incidents occur as they discover they are not alone. This film borrows themes dealing with insanity and madness, which are direct extensions to the overall concepts of dissociation and denial this film portrays. Grace introduces herself to the viewers as a flawed, emotional and troubled woman. Which sets the mood for the viewer and contributes to the overall impression. How do Shakespeare's King Lear and Alejandro Gonzalez's Birdman use literary and film techniques to explore the complex dynamics of power, social position, and age? Shakespeare and Alejandro Gonzalez both successfully convey how an individual is treated due to their power, social position, and age, in their respective texts King Lear and Birdman. Both portray the main character as an individual who has lost their power and must overcome the challenges that come of this. This dialogue signifies something that the audience fears, being forgotten by society, and further conveys this to them by exhibiting a character that this affects. A motif of nakedness is also incorporated in the film. This occurs when Riggan is about to perform a preview of his production. He gets locked out of the back of the theatre and must run through the streets in only his underwear. It is this scene though that provides Riggan his chance to become relevant, as he is filmed by a pedestrian and uploaded to YouTube. It is later that Sam refers to this video as "power" for Riggan. This just shows what is classed as power in the twenty–first century, and the audience can understand this when looking at celebrities and their dominance on social media. This motif of nakedness is also present in Shakespeare's King Lear. In this story, Shakespeare writes of a king who gives his power to his daughters only for them to overthrow him completely and banish him from the kingdom. However, unlike in Birdman where the character gains power, this motif occurs to symbolize Lear's complete loss of power. As without his lavish clothes that reveal his regal status, he is no different to a farmer. The crown that Lear wore is also symbolic of his power. • 51. Agora Analysis The film Agora, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, is set in Alexandria Egypt around the year 400. This time period is very soon after the legalization of the Christian religion in the Roman Empire, and this fact is explicitly stated near the beginning of the movie. The plot follows the real–world mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher Hypatia, although in the movie her age does not match up with what it would have truly been at the time of the events which are depicted, including her murder. She is shown as being consistently young throughout the movie although her murder actually took place when she was in her fifties or her sixties. Two other key figures are Orestes and St. Cyril the Christian Patriarch of Alexandria. The movie features the political struggle between Orestes and St. Cyril as its central conflict along with the secondary conflicts of paganism and Judaism versus Christianity. The main idea that the director seems to have intended for his audience is that religion is opposed to civilized behavior and to intellectual and scientific progress. This is made evident by his distortion of historical facts to fit his bias which will be discussed later. The film was recorded on the island of Malta and was released in 2009. At that time and continuing into the present day, entertainment media contained a noticeable anti–religious sentiment. That sentiment is clearly expressed in this movie as religious people are consistently portrayed as stupid, unthinking, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Isolation In Shutster Island, And Shutter Island :... Developing mental illness and traumas in the brain can in some cases lead to changes in personality and trigger symptoms of illness, drug or alcohol abuse can contribute as well. Isolation can assist in a person's mental well–being, for example mental instability and hallucinations also brings out fear, anger, anxiety and sadness. The four films I have chosen are psychological thrillers which all deal with some form of isolation and all feature mental illness. The films are Shutter Island by Martin Scorsese (2010), The Others by Alejandro Amenabar (2001), Black Swan by Darren Aronofsky (2010) and Secret Window by David Koepp (2004). In today's society mental illness has become far more common than in the past when they had no idea how to deal with it. Mental illness leads to people causing harm to themselves or others leaving their humanity trapped deep inside. Being isolated leads people to be mentally unstable and come up with outrageous conclusions making them believe they need to create another reality. In Shutter Island and Black Swan isolation heightened the main characters need for a better life. Andrew Laeddis needed his relationship with his wife so much he chose to ignore her attempts of suicide "After she tried to kill herself the first time, Dolores told me she... she had an insect living inside her brain. She could feel it clicking across her skull, just... pulling the wires, just for fun. She told me that. She told me that but I didn't listen. I loved her so much." this was said when Andrew finally accepted reality of the trauma he has experienced. In Black Swan however Nina's mother refused to let go therefore isolating Nina from experiencing important aspects of life, Nina's mother Erica stop her from growing up by not allowing her to choose what her room looks like, Nina was in her mid–twenties and her room was pink with several stuffed toys and dolls, in the centre of the room a small single sized bed with pink covers, looks as though a six year old lived there. I believe that the fancy editing and animations are to meant to keep the viewer interested by presenting the message in a visually compelling way to hold the audience's attention. In order for the filmmakers to understand how each group worked on a very personal level, they had to immerse themselves in the scenes directly. Before beginning production, Peralta spent months hanging in these neighborhoods WITHOUT a camera, trying to establish relationships and gain peoples trust, as well as looking for interviewees. This effort is shown when Peralta can get some of these guys to open up and talk about things that they would not normally talk about. Patience and communication were absolutely critical in achieving that level of trust. He is not telling the stories from his perspective, because he did not experience it. Instead, he is giving a platform to these gang members and member of the community to share their opinions and beliefs. There were also people questioning Peralta's credibility, suggesting that a white former surfer/skateboarder has no type of relation to the gang culture of South Central La and that he does not fit to tell the story. People also criticized the film because they think that it is an exaggeration of what was/is really going on in South Central LA. Another concern was that this film is one sided and depicts the police, institutions and organizations as the culprits for why our black communities have suffered thanks to gang violence. The film did not really mention anything about the mechanics of the gang lifestyle. Why not? He handles symbolism masterfully, using classic motifs such as light and dark and haunted houses to get his point across further. Ignorant of their death at first, the children, who were in their lifetime allergic to light, avoided it at all costs. Light, often, is used as a symbol for truth: a guiding light for those who fumble about in the darkness. This is the same case in The Others.
