2. Research is vital for writing or conducting interviews .
Read, listen, and watch as much as you can before
deciding the focus and the interviewee and organizing
your questions.
Research is also needed before you decide the focus of a
report, or its ‘topic’ which should not be longer than a
few words.
Try to summarize the most important point of the report
in one complete sentence. This will help you organize
your thoughts and write a clearer, and shorter, report.
Start with writing the cue.
This will help you organize your thoughts and avoid
repeating yourself.
You can change the cue later, especially after conducing
an interview which gives you new information.

Make sure your report or interview has a logical structure.
Usually – NOT always – this take the shape of:
Present News point
Past Background
Future
(On this structure, see Television News, by Teresa Keller and Steve Hawkins, page 156.)
• When looking ahead, do not predict
• It is rarely justified to say in a news report that something ‘will
happen’, without attributing the announcement to a source.
• Who says it ‘will happen’?
• How do we know that it will?
• It is better to say
o …is due to happen.
o …is likely to happen.
• Alan Mackim of the BBC World Service:
• The world is full of plans. Wait until they get somewhere before
you report them, especially if someone is talking about someone
else’s plans.

The ‘inverted pyramid’, or triangle,
is the traditional model of how a
news report should be organized.
For radio, it helps to think of a normal triangle, with
information arranged in such a way that if the piece is
cut from the end, because of pressure of time, it will
not lose its shape. See Mark Brayne’s ‘A Despatch on
How to Write a Despatch’, in the Handbook of Radio
Journalism, page 18.

See if the idea of the piece keeping its shape after being cut from the end
applies to this report. Will the listener still receive the most important
information, if the report is not carried in full, but is stopped? Also, note
the repetition of the key words throughout the report, which we
discussed earlier.

•Watch the following two reports from BBC Arabic TV, which we discussed in class.
•Note how the ‘audio-only’ versions compare with the TV versions.
•The first report is more relevant to the learning points about radio packages.
•There is also a written version of each report , which was published online.
Compare the differences in the structures of reports produced for different media.
