4. PARTICIPLE
A participle is often used when we want to
express an active action.
Most often, adjective function as an adjective.
A participle most often ends in –ed and –
ing(expect for some irregular verb).
5. Types of Participle
1. Present Participle
Present participle express active action as work as
adjective. Adding “-ing” to the infinitive from will
create the present participle. The present participle
can be (1) part of the verb (2) an adjective.
e.g : The man is talking to his friends.
The man talking to is friends has a bread.

The boy is standing in the corner.
The boy standing in the corner was naughty.
6. 2 . Past Participle
A past participle often in –ed, but there are many
irregular past participle. The –ed form of the verb
can be(1) the simple past (2) the past participle of the verb
or an(3) an adjective.
Example :
1. She painted this picture.
2. She has painted this picture.
3. The picture painted by Karen is now in museum.
Eg : The family has purchased a television.( dikatakan verb
karena ada has)
The television purchased yesterday was expensive.

Not only......But also
• The corelative conjungtion not only........but also
must be used as a pair in joining like entities.
The word also can be omitted, but it is prefable
not to omit it.

1. Robert is talented as well as handsome.
2. Beth plays the guitar as well as the violin.

Note : when using as well as to indicate compound
subject, the phrase should be set off by
commas. The verb will agree with the principal
subject, NOT with the noun closest to it.
The teacher, as well as her student, is going to
concert.
My Cousins, as well as Tim, have a test tomorrow.
11. BOTH.....AND
Example :
1. Robert is both talented and handsome.
2. Beth plays both the guitar and the violin.
3. He writes both correctly and neatly.
4. Marta excels both in mathematics and in
science.
Note : it is not correct to use both and as well as in
the same sentence.
12. Participial Inclusive
Example :
• Fina, wearing a blue veil, is not only beatiful but
also smart.
• The man, talking with her friend, is both handsome
and kind.
• Luna, palying the guitar, is not only talented but
also clever.
Note : the word wearing, talking and playing is
participle and the word not only... But also,
both...and is inclusive
