An Egocentric Ex-Husband
The Heart of An Egocentric Ex–Husband.
Robert Browning was a nineteenth century writer and poet whose works are famous worldwide. One
of his poems that has been analyzed constantly is "My Last Duchess," a dramatic monologue of a
Duke who is talking to the count's messenger about wedding arrangements through speaking about
his last Duchess. He started off as simple, then his superiority complex took him over.
The Duke or the speaker in Robert Browning's "My Last Duchess" presents a calm demeanor at the
beginning of the poem.He shows off a portrait of his ex–wife to a stranger, who we later learn is a
messenger from his future father–in–law. He says to the messenger "That's my last Duchess painted
on the wall/Looking as if she were alive"(Browning,1–2).This can be looked at as though she
was/still is an object of his affection and that's the reason why he had a portrait painted of her. ...

Upon further speculation,a little more of the Duke's personality reveals itself.Much selfishness can
be found in the manner in which the Duke conceals the picture. He claims "none puts by/The curtain
I have pulled for you but I"(Browning,9–10).If he's the only one who controls who sees the picture,it
can be said that he might have been selfish and controlling towards her when she was alive,or in her
death he finally found a way to control her. This seemed both funny and ironic, since he has another
young woman waiting to be put to the

Poem Analysis- Robert Fross; Robert Browning; Anne Bradstreet
Robert Frost, "Out,Out–"
1. In line 15, Frost describes the saw as being sinister. He infers that the saw has a mind of its own,
by stating that the saw jumped out of the boy's hand and cut the boy's hand terribly. Frost also makes
it seem as if the saw is in a way, like a friend. He does this by demonstrating that using the saw is an
advantage for the boy because it is making his job ten times easier. Without the saw, the boy would
spend hours cutting through the wood. 2. In Frost's poem, the people that surround the boy must be
his family. It could also very much be friends, or members of his community, along with the doctor
and nurses working on his injury. The tone of the poem leads me to conclude that the "they" in the

In other words, he, the Duke, controls the Duchess; or he wishes to control his Duchess. The Duke
wouldn't want anyone to see the portrait of his Duchess, with her blushed cheeks, unless he was
there. The same can be inferred from the last few lines of the poem, line 54–55, "Notice Neptune,
though,/Taming a sea–horse, thought a rarity,/ Which Claus of Innsbruck cast in bronze for me!"
The Duke is implying, that he himself is Neptune, and his last Duchess is the sea–horse. No one
could have imagined that a sea–horse could be tamed, but Neptune achieved it. Identical to the way
that the last Duchess herself was tamed.
Adrienne Rich, "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers,"
In her poem, "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers," Adrienne is describing the protagonist's feelings towards her
marriage. In lines 9–10, the protagonist feels that she is a prisoner of her marriage, and will only be
set free when she dies. The protagonist uses the tigers as a symbol of who she wished she could be.
In the first stanza of the poem, Adrienne describes the tigers as being un–fearful of the men. A trait
she wishes she possessed.
Sharon Olds, "Rite of Passage," 1. The speaker describes the first–grade boys at her son's birthday
party as men. Their behavior is pure imitation of the men they have been around. Her description of
them is ironic, because how can first–graders realistically be grown men? She also uses the concept
of violence a lot in the poem.

In "My Last Duchess" Browning made it so that the narrator branded his wife with the stigma of
being a "loose" women, making it so that she was seen as impure and tainted to all those around
them (fgcu.edu). Using an AABB rhyme scheme to make the poem flow more rhythmically
Browning opens the poem up with the Duke telling the story of his last duchess who was to impure

Over 6,000,000 died and only 900,000 survived. The Holocaust is one of the darkest moments in
world history. Hitler was a German dictator who wanted to create a supreme race; blue eyes and
blonde hair were some of the requirements. Because the majority of Jews did not fit that description,
they were targeted. Thousands of them were sent to concentration camps to die, while others were
arrested and killed. In an attempt to save as many lives as possible, many people hid Jewish refugees
during the Holocaust. Three individuals who did this are Irena Sendler, Karolina Juszczykowska,
and Raoul Wallenberg.

Analysis of My Last Duchess Essay
'My Last Duchess' is a poem written by Robert Browning in 1845. It's a first person narrative of a
duke who is showing the ambassador around his palace and negotiating his marriage to the daughter
of another powerful family. As they are walking through the palace, the duke stops and looks at the
beautiful portrait of his lovely last duchess.
The duke speaks his thoughts about the girl, and as the poem progresses we begin to realize that his
last duchess had been murdered. "...I gave commands, then all smiles stopped together," This
metaphorical sentence tells us that his commands were the ones that caused her death and her 'stop
of all smiles together'. The reason behind this is that she was flirtatious with all men because "she ...

"My favour at her breast, the dropping of the daylight in the West". Here the Duke tells us that he
believed he had a seat at her heart. However her passion for him was diminishing as quickly as a
day's sunset in the West. The daylight is such a beautiful thing, but her love for him was like the
'dropping of daylight' meaning that he was losing such a beauty and he regretted.
This metaphor used is a tragic metaphor.
The rhetorical question used on line 23 reflects his anger. "A heart – how shall I say? – too soon
made glad..." this quote explains that she was pleased by all men, and the Duke was struggling to
find a way to express himself successfully. This is because he was so bothered by the fact that he
didn't satisfy her enough since she needed the satisfaction from other men. His frustration also
reflects that there is an element of jealousy within him. "Oh sir, she smiled..." The poet makes use of
a sibilant, which is an irritating sound to hear. This emphasizes his anger and frustration. He never
refers to her by name, which reflects his disturbed character.
After all of the Duke's anger builds up, we learn that he lets out all of his frustration in a very
negative and disturbed manner. "This grew; I gave commands; Then all smiles stopped together.
There she stands as if alive." The deliberate ambiguity used in this sentence hints to the audience
that he has murdered her.
The poem is one

A Comparison of the Attitudes Shown in The Man He Killed By Tomas Hardy and in My Last

The attitudes shown in the two poems "The Man he Killed" by Tomas Hardy and "My Last

who feels very guilty, Browning's Duke is a vain, proud man who has killed his wife in a
premeditated manner. These characteristics are also revealed through the poet's use of stanza,
structure and language choices.
Both of the poems are about killing In the Man He Killed the solider feels very guilty for his

If he was put in that position again then he might shoot to kill somebody to save his life. However In
the Man he Killed it seems that the man would only kill again if he was forced to.
The men both display different attitudes towards their actions.
In the poems the Duke is haughty and dismissive and in the man he killed the solider is very
humble. And regretful. In the Man he Killed another key difference between the two poems are the
attitudes displayed after the deaths.
The langue he used is very basic and monosyllabic, and he is also very agitated about what he has
done.
"Was out of work – had sold his traps –
No other reason why."
The simple language shows how he is struggling to come to terms with what he has done. In My
Last Duchess
The Duke's attitude is completely different, because he is very dismissive and bossy, and he loves
the sound of his own voice.

My Last Duchess And Porphyria's Love Analysis
True Love
(A Discussion on Robert Browning's My Last Duchess and Porphyria's Lover.)
Robert Browning wrote many amazing dramatic monologues during his time in the 1800's. "The
English poet Robert Browning (1812–1889) is best known for his dramatic monologues. By vividly
portraying a central character against a social background, these poems probed complex human
motives in a variety of historical periods"(Gale). Browning was super influential with his
monologues during the Victorian period and even still today. Several of Browning's work are about
love. Two of his most notable love monologues was My Last Duchess and Porphyria's Lover.
Browning's two monologues My Last Duchess and Porphyria's lover share several similarities, but
also differ severely.
In Browning's readings My last Duchess and Porphyria's Lover share several similarities. Both the
men in these monologues kill the women they are supposed to love. The main part of these
monologues is the men killing their wives. Both kill their wives because they are both jealous men,
who want complete control over the woman. They feel as if the women should be their property, and
only theirs. Another Similarity of these monologues is they are wrote in the man's point of view, and
not the women. "Both poems show a similarity because they are both narrated from the male lover's
point of view. As a result, the reader becomes more closely involved in the poems and can feel very
strong emotions for the individuals

My Last Duchess was written by Robert Browning and published in 1842.
It is based on a real person. Alfonso, Duke of Ferrara (1537–1597), married fourteen year–old
Lucrezia de Medici in 1158 when he was twenty one. Three years later she was killed, possibly
poisoned. The
Duke then arranged to marry the daughter of the count of Tyrol. As was customary at the time, the
marriage arrangements were arranged between the Duke and a go between.

Although we assume from the poem that the Duke murdered the Duchess the Duke never says
unambiguously or openly that he killed his wife or even got anyone else to do it for him. However
there are points throughout the poem that indicate the Duchess annoyed the Duke. He thinks that the
Duchess should be more dignified and not so easily impressed. Specifically he faults her for finding
equal pleasure in four things as if they are not at all of equal value.
* The white mule that she rode
* The Sun setting
* A gift of fruit from an unnamed courtier
The Duke emphasises in lines 31–33 that it was good for her to show gratitude, but bad that she
considered 'anybody's gift' with his gift of giving her his family name which is nine hundred years
old.
Frequently we find that the lines contain ellipsis, which helps to develop the poem how Browning
wants, so that we come to our own conclusion of exactly why and how the Duchess was murdered.
However
Browning places the Ellipses, and develops the poem so well that the conclusion is almost exactly
the same for every reader of his poetry.
The Laboratory, like my Last Duchess comes fro the 1842 collection. It has a similar subject– a

My Last Duchess And Arnold Diction
Through the use of diction, poets Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold, and John Donne characterize
the speaker and, in one case, the person to whom the speaker addresses. In "My Last Duchess" and
"Dover Beach," Browning and Arnold depict the nature of their speakers. While Browning exposes
the Duke as pompous and controlling, Arnold portrays his speaker as pessimistic. Donne's "A
Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" also characterizes the speaker and his wife as having an
emotional love. These characterizations help the poets to create a story involving multiple
characters, although only one character speaks. Therefore, they use diction to tell a story from a
single point of view.
Browning utilizes certain diction in the Duke's dialogue to characterize ... Show more content on

Additionally, the speaker explains to his wife that, although he must leave, their love will "endure
not yet / A breach, but an expansion, / Like gold to airy thinness beat," implying that their love is as
fine as gold because it is just as malleable (22–24). This conceit also shows that the connection
between the two will stretch until they are together again. Through diction, Donne creates metaphor
and conceit so as to characterize the speaker and his wife as having an emotional love. As such, the
speaker illustrates what he predicts their separation will be like in narrating how they are to act
when separated . Therefore, Donne's "Dover Beach" depicts emotional story of the separation that
the speaker and his wife will

My Last Duchess by Robert Browning
'My Last Duchess' is all about control and jealousy. Written by Robert Browning in 1842 (the
Victorian era), the dramatic monologue is set in 16th Century Italy where the Duke of Ferrara is
talking to a Count's emissary about a prospective marriage with the Counts daughter.
The poem conveys the controlling nature of the Duke by the use of one stanza in the entire poem. It
demonstrates this, as there is no interruption from the servant and no break whilst the Duke is
talking. Any pauses in the poem, which are created by the Duke, are used to break up the Duke's
thoughts, not to allow the other person to speak. Browning uses a lot of commas to build up the pace
of the Duke's speech – it also eliminates any chance for the other person to talk.
Browning uses a possessive pronoun in the Duke's description of his late wife. He writes, "That's my
last Duchess painted on the wall." The use of the "my" shows the objectification of the "last
Duchess" by the Duke. Duke Ferrara calls the late Duchess 'his' to show ownership over her, this
possessiveness may confirm why he is not happy with her friendliness. This kind of behaviour was
normal in the 16th century as women were seen as inferior because they were classed as property of
the men. During that time, most societies were an extreme patriarchal society. Browning produces a
sinister undertone whilst he is talking about his wife "painted on the wall" instead of the painting of
his deceased wife, which continues to develop the

Differing Views of Male–female Relationships in Three Poems
In the three poems we experience three different views of how male–female relationships should
take place. In 'My Last Duchess' we experience the view that the male should have the main role in
relationships, in 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' we hear of a relationship where the woman is in total
control of the man and has all the power.
Finally in 'A Woman to Her Lover' we read that both men and women should have an equal amount
of power and no one should be dominant. In 'My Last Duchess' the thoughts of a very possessive
and arrogant
Duke of Ferrara are shared. He expected his wife to behave in a very conservative manner and
wanted her to treat others as inferior. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to this, we can see that he is holding this piece of artwork with the same value as the
picture of his wife which shows that the Duke believes that he is superior to everyone else.
The strong feminist views in 'A Woman to Her Lover' however, are in total contrast to the well–
known ideas in 'My Last Duchess'. Although at first 'A Woman to Her Lover' appears to only show
the feminist views of relationships, it is in fact in search of equality between the males and females
in relationships. 'My Last Duchess' gives the sense that a man has the leading role, and all of the
power in any relationship whereas in 'A Woman to Her Lover', the ideas that both men and women
should be equal in relationships are uttered.
In the first stanza of the poem, we can see that the woman examines how women are typically
expected to be by men (as a housewife) the
"servant" and "to bear you children". The very fact that she is expressing these phrases in a critical
and negative manner implies that she has a resents this idea towards this stereotypical view of
women. At the ending of this first stanza, she states; "If that be what you ask, O lover I refuse you!"

When it comes to heroism, no hero is perfect and every hero has its flaws. A hero needs the strength

My Last Duchess By Robert Browning
My Last Duchess
The dramatic monologue "My Last Duchess" was penned down by Robert Browning. In this poem,
the narrator is the Duke of Ferrara, and the listener is the count's agent, through whom the Duke is
arranging the proposed marriage to a second duchess. The poem is ironical and reveals its rhetorical
sense, gradually. In the later part of the poem, the Duke claims that he does not have a skill in
speech, but his monologue is a masterpiece of subtle rhetoric. While supposedly entertaining the
listener by showing his wife's portrait, he clearly reveals his character. Through his formalized tone
of rhyme, he reveals his egoistic and jealous attitude.
The Duke takes control of the situation entirely as he is the only speaker throughout the poem and
his way of speaking leaves no scope for interruption, by the listener. The way he addresses his
listener, "That's my last duchess", calls attention to the peculiarity of his designation which he
indicates in a very proud manner. The apparent pauses throughout the poem, shown by dashes,
indicate hesitation as the Duke considers what to say. This clearly suggests his manipulative attitude.
As soon as he points towards the standing portrait of his last wife, he asks his listener to sit down
–"Will't please you sit and look at her?" His way of asking is not very polite and is more of a
command which shows the psychology of a man with power.
As he starts describing the portrait, he praises the painter Fra Pandolf, for

This can be seen in, "some–how I know not how as if she ranked/ My gift of a nine–hundred–year

received others. He, in fact, ranked his nine–hundred year–old name, his nobility and especially
status above everything. Therefore he felt, his gift could not be bettered by anyone. This quote also
suggests that the Duke was proud about his status.
The Duke is obsessively possessive. This can be seen in "That's my
Last Duchess painted on the wall." This quote shows how the Duke regarded the Duchess as one of
objects. Also within this quote, the possessive pronoun "my" is used. This highlights his possessive
qualities. Later on in the poem, we see that he treats every woman in such a manner. This can be
seen in "Though his fair daughter's self, as I avowed/ At starting, is my object." He describes the
Count's daughter as being an item. This also shows that the Duke was after the money he was going

greedy and powerful.
All of these characteristics of the Duke, especially his power, might suggest that the Duke was
involved in the murder of the Duchess. This is evident in "I gave commands; / Then all smiles

My Last Duchess Essay
How does Browning tell the story in 'My Last Duchess' ?
Browning's 'My Last Duchess' examines the Duke of Ferrara's recollection of memories– he is
showing how the Duke is remembering the past experiences with the now murdered wife he once
had, but whether he loved or despised her – or both– is unclear. Browning suggests that the Duke
murdered her himself.
The poem opens with the narration from the Duke and the voice of dramatic monologue is
established. Browning refers to the painting in the duke's voice as 'my last Duchess', using a
possesive pronoun to show that the Duke has a dominant sense of character, and calling his late wife
'last' rather than 'late'. He ought, perhaps, to have said 'late', but this word establishes his materialism
and shallow personality, which cause the reader to mistrust his version of events that follow. In the
opening we immediately find out that the duchess is 'looking as if she were alive,' and that only
'now' the painting is a 'wonder'. Thus, the aspect of opening is important in Browning's telling of the

not Fra Pandolf himself. Additionally, personification is used as paintings are not supposed to stand.
The Duke dehumanizes Fra Pandolf. This means that he would essentially a tool instead of a person.
Throughout the poem, the Duke can be seen as he constantly boasts about the duchess. The Duke
tells the painter that when other guests arrive at his palace, "they would ask me, if they durst,". The
embedded clause and conversational tone reinstates his status and power and that the poem is set in
a patriarchal society where the Duke dominates and holds primary power. The Duchess on the wall
was "Too easily impressed; she liked whate'er She looked on, and her looks went everywhere". The
verb phrase, 'too easily impressed' implies that the narrative persona is bitter and was hyperbolic at
the same time. Nevertheless, the noun,'whate'er' also states that the narrative persona has a
tyrannical nature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Duke instructs the painter, "Will't please you rise? We'll meet the company below." The
interrogative sentence, "Will't please you rise?" shows that he has authority over everyone in his

with his power. The painter can be seen as he is scared of the duke. The Duke responds as he tells
the painter, "Notice Neptune, though, taming a sea–horse, thought a rarity." The comparison phrase,
"Notice Neptune" suggests that the Duke sees himself as he is similar to a God. The parenthesis also
slows down the pace of the poem and finally, the noun phrase, "thought a rarity" shows the Duke's
misogynistic and patriarchal figure along with his materialistic nature can be seen as the one

In My Last Duchess, destructive Love is shown to be a forceful feeling in "My Last Duchess". The

was implied for himself just, and when she turned out to be excessively of an irritation he "offered

the craftsman was "Fra Pandolf", doubtlessly a chaste priest. All things being equal, he disliked the
way that her "better half's quality just" didn't make a "spot of satisfaction" in the Duchess, however

In his poems, "The Bishop Orders His Tomb", "Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister", and "My Last
Duchess", Browning explores a few sins that link to Victorian ideas yet continue to be compelling
commentary on some of the modernity's biggest contradictions. These characters process the world
according to their own selfish ideologies, filtering into dramatic monologues that challenge and
comment on the time's social norms and growing institutions. The narrator of "Soliloquy of the
Spanish Cloister" is resentful and irrationally petty contrary to the monolithic idea of a monk. In
"My Last Duchess" charm thinly veils the tyrannical nature of a respected Duke. Lastly, the bishop
of "The Bishop Orders His Tomb" is sour with greed, jealousy, vanity, and resentment. These
characters act out of their socially–prescribed nature and this, I think, is ultimately a critique of
Victorian ideals of order, structure, poise, domesticity and perfection. These ideas of people and
institutions rarely reflect the reality.
In "Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister", a Spanish monk monologues about his irrational hatred for a
Brother Lawrence. He mocks with disdain, creates ideas of Brother Lawrence that paint him in an
undesirable light, dreams of sabotaging the monk's garden of melons, and even concocts a plan that
will presumably send Brother Lawrence to hell. Such bitterness is punctuated by the idea that this
monk would be willing to sell his soul simply for the pleasure of enacting Brother

Modern Femininity And Gender Roles
Though Hannah Höch may be a jack–of–all–trades in the art realm – having dabbled in painting,
drawing, printmaking, textiles, pattern making, and photography – she certainly is a master of
collage. A German artist of the 20th century, Höch is primarily known for her turbulent romantic
relationship with Czech artist Raoul Hausmann, one of the founders of the Berlin Dada movement.
Hausmann credited himself and Höch as the inventors of photomontage. Höch uses her collages to
comment and critique the unstable sociopolitical state in Germany at the time. Her collages also
highlight the growth of mass media and new technology. Perhaps most importantly, Höch challenges
the concept of modern femininity and gender roles through her work. As the only female Berlin
Dada artist, Hannah Höch takes a unique and important perspective on the social and political
changes occurring in 20th century Germany. Höch was born in 1889 in Gotha, Germany. She moved
to Berlin in 1912 to study calligraphy, embroidery, wallpaper design, and graphic art (National
Museum of Women in the Arts). In 1915, she met Raoul Hausmann, with whom she had a seven–
year relationship. From 1916 to 1926, she worked in the handicrafts department of a magazine and
newspaper publishing company. Her work included designing knitting, crocheting, and
embroidering patterns. Later on, she incorporated lace and embroidery patterns in her
photomontages – juxtaposing these traditional women's crafts with modern culture. In 1926,

Raoul Wallenberg And The Holocaust
During the Holocaust, around 6 million Jews died of persecution from many groups of people. But
this number could have been much greater if it was not for the efforts of many courageous people.
There is not an exact number of how many people were saved during the Holocaust, but the death
toll would have been much larger if people, like Raoul Wallenberg, did not help. Raoul Wallenberg
was a Swedish businessman and diplomat who showed much moral courage by saving countless
Jews during World War II. Raoul Wallenberg was born on August 4, 1912 in Sweden. He was born
into one of the richest families in Sweden, the Wallenbergs. Since his family was very wealthy, he
had the opportunity to attend college abroad in another continent. In 1931, Wallenberg went to the
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in the United States to study architecture. He graduated in
three and a half years with a bachelor's degree of Science in Architecture. This bachelor's degree
allowed him to come into contact with many Jews that had escaped from Europe during the early
years of persecution while he was working on architecture in Palestine (Raoul Wallenberg). In June
1944, the War Refugee Board, or WRB, a U.S.– established organization that helped support rescue
missions for Jews, recruited Wallenberg to lead their operations in Budapest, Hungary. When Raoul
Wallenberg arrived in Budapest, there were only 230,000 (⅓) Jews left in the city. 400,000 had
already been deported by the Nazis who had taken

The Use Of Tone In Robert Browning's 'My Last Duchess'
There is nothing more telling of an individual than the way they present themselves. Speech is an
incredibly powerful means of expression, and often gives deeper insight into who one is as a person.
"My Last Duchess" by Robert Browning explores the complexity of tone in a way that is both
effective and powerful. The poem is narrated by the Duke of Ferrara, who is speaking to an envoy
about a painting of his previous duchess. He recounts the memories behind the artwork in an
ominous and snide manner, giving the reader insight on the nature of their relationship. Tone is a
major literary element in the poem that not only paints the Duke as a monster, but also makes the
piece more effective. Browning utilizes subtle figurative language that is ... Show more content on

The irony in his tone is used primarily when the Duke postulates how his wife behaved around other
men. His sarcastic, demeaning speech shines through when he states "she had a heart–how shall I
say?– too soon made glad" (21–22). Not only does this line deliver verbal irony, it also gives insight
on the Duke's perception of his wife. Though he has no concrete evidence for her "suspicious"
behavior, he does not hesitate to passively critique her. Browning additionally develops this critical
personality when the Duke fantasizes about the gifts his wife received from other men. He mentions
a "bough of cherries some officious fool broke in the orchard for her" (27–28) and how this gift
"would draw from her alike the approving speech" (30). Though a gift of cherries is nothing
significant, the Duke is annoyed by it. He does not want his wife to thank the men, because her
"approving speech" is too generous and flirtatious. The image of the cherries from the orchard is
something that the Duke's mind curated. It's his imagination, and that's a technique Browning
utilizes to emphasize the Duke's jealous personality. The imagery itself is powerful, but when paired
with the images created by the Duke's tone, the poem gains even more

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Comparison
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream was
originally written by Hunter S. Thompson in 1971. This classic novel showcases a stoned
sportswriter, Raoul Duke, who also refers to his own ego as "Dr. Gonzo". Duke travels to Las Vegas
with his fellow Samoan "attorney" to cover a motorcycle race on the outskirts of Las Vegas called
the Mint 400. After a series of reckless events, Raoul and his companion finally make their way to
the city. Once there, they find themselves stirring up a great deal of trouble and receive a heap of
public attention due to their erratic, drug–induced behaviors. The novel intrigued readers so much
that, in 1998, Terry Gilliam transformed Thompson's work of art into a movie ... Show more content

Nevertheless, it seems as if Gilliam's focus was more on entertaining his audiences through the
characters' comical annotations and side effects of the hallucinogens rather than illustrating
Thompson's own idea of the American Dream.
While there were a few key differences between the book and film editions of Fear and Loathing in
Las Vegas, as mentioned previously, the film shares mostly similarities with Thompson's original
novel. In fact, the entire first half of the movie remains remarkably faithful to the book's plot. Most
of the differences in Gilliam's film mentioned earlier occurred around the second half of the movie –
after Raoul and his attorney had made their way across the long route in the desert. The location, the
description of the setting, additional characters, drugs, and the car used in the initial scenes were all
identical to those in the novel. For example, the drugs that Duke and his attorney were using in the
book consisted of ether, blotter acid, marijuana ("grass"), cocaine, mescaline, amyl, and prescription
pills; these same drugs were used by the characters in Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as
well.
Likewise, the lines spoken by the characters in Terry Gilliam's film were almost matching to those in

Envy In My Last Duchess, Hamlet, And A Room Of One's Own
Envy is most commonly associated with jealousy, greed or even pride. Each trait associated with the
word is followed by a negative connotation which can be found in each of the texts. Envy is never
thought of as being a direct threat to one's sanity or well–being or even that of another person, but in
the three texts, My Last Duchess, Hamlet, and A room of One's Own, it can be concluded that the
central idea is that envy can lead a person to commit extreme acts and hinder their sanity. Browning
closes My Last Duchess by establishing that envy can lead a person to commit extreme acts and
hinder their– or someone else's sanity. Browning uses characterization to exploit the character
development of the duke and also enhance how envy can lead ... Show more content on

One literary element that emphasizes the difference across the three texts is conflict. In My Last
Duchess, the duke was conflicted because he felt there was an unequal distribution in the love he
was receiving. The duke's main problem was his belief that his love was not valued as it should and
this developed his envy. The envy felt by the duke was directed towards those around the duchess
who also received attention from her. "... I know not how– as if she ranked my gift of a nine–
hundred–years–old name with anybody's gift..." (32–34) Browning's evident demonstration of the
duke's issue with the duchess giving others attention helped construct the central idea. To contrast, in
Hamlet Shakespeare emphasizes the conflict that erupted in response to the extreme act prompted by
envy. Claudius murdered because he was envious and wanted what his brother, the king, had and
when Hamlet discovered this he was distraught and brought to the brink of madness trying to seek
revenge. " But howsoever thou pursuest this act, taint not thy mind..." (Act 1, Scene 5) Shakespeare
makes sure to detail how Claudius' envy led to murder and its heavy impact on Hamlet and his state
of mind. Lastly, in A Room Of One's Own it is indirectly revealed that the women were envious of
the men. Woolf allows leeway while at the same time asserting that the women were envious due to
the circumstances and limitations placed upon them because of their gender. Unlike the other two
stories, the conflict that was unraveled led to suicides and the loss of sanity between the women
instead of those around them. ".. a highly gifted girl who had tried to use her gift for poetry would
have been so thwarted and hindered by other people, so tortured and pulled asunder by her own
contrary instincts, that she must have lost her health and sanity.." (Woolf, 21) In this the central idea
was revealed and

The Duchess Quotes
In this essay, the character of the Duchess will be analysed. The changes her character undergoes
from her first to her last scene will go under the microscope, as well as her archetype and whether
her character is realistic or not. There will also be conversation about the consistency of her
character, her appearance and whether the audience has permission to judge her or not. The Duchess
is a nasty creature when the audience first meets her, as she has little care for those around her, often
mistreats her own baby and actually orders for Alice's head to be chopped off! "'Here! You may
nurse it a bit if you like!' the Duchess said to Alice, flinging the baby at her as she spoke.", Page 55.
She obviously has very low emotional intelligence, as she didn't stop to wait for a reply before
throwing the baby to Alice. Upon analysis, it also can be shown that she either doesn't care about her
baby, or has a habit of trusting people very quickly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of ' My Last Duchess ' By Robert Browning
Londyn Zografakis
English Period 8
7 November 2014
Throughout history, gender roles have been an important barrier in society. Women are forced to
satisfy expectations established by men and society. "My Last Duchess," by Robert Browning,
focuses on the powerful Duke establishing certain expectations of the Duchess, and attempting to
control her. Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, concentrates on Laertes establishing certain
expectations of Ophelia, and seeking to control her. A Room of One's Own, by Virginia Woolf,
centers on societal expectations of Judith, and her father trying to control her. In all three texts, men
have the ability to control women and have the freedom to do as they please. Women must conform
to the expectations of faithfulness, attentiveness, and chastity.
"My Last Duchess," by Robert Browning, depicts powerful husbands attempting to control the
actions of their wives as they are free to do as they please. In contrast, women are expected to be
faithful and attentive only to their husbands. The power and control of the Duke is conveyed by a
painting of the Duchess. It belongs to the Duke and is referred to as "my last Duchess" (1). The use
of "my" demonstrates the possessive nature of the Duke and his claim of the Duchess as his own
personal possession, much like the painting itself. As the Duke persists on forcing domination upon
the Duchess, he is greatly displeased to find that she treats and considers him as the same value as
nearly any other man.

My Last Duchess By Robert Browning
"My Last Duchess" The poem "My Last Duchess" is a masterful example of a dramatic monologue
written by Robert Browning. In this poem the narrator is a duke who is discussing his murder of his
last duchess with a man with whom he is arranging his marriage to a count's daughter. As it is a
monologue, the man being spoken to does not say a word. It is believed by many that this character
is based on the Italian Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso II, who sought out the marriage of a count's
daughter following the poisoning of his wife (Bender 5). The theme of this poem is the blatant and
unapologetic corruption of power (Marchino 3). The duke uses the resources available to him to
force others to conform to his wishes. Three prevalent aspects of the Dukes personality that are
instrumental in the meaning behind this poem are his need of control, his arrogance, and his
jealousy. The duke's necessity for control is one primary drive for his actions. He needs to be in
control of every aspect of his life, and if he can not control something he will use his influence to
end it. The use of a dramatic monologue is brilliant for a character so obsessed with control. The
dominance of his side of the argument places emphasis on his need for control (Marchino 2). It was
an act of great prowess on the part of Browning to craft a character that so greatly benefits from the
writing style. This aspect of his personality is where you see the majority of his corruption of power.

Cause And Effect Analysis Of My Last Duchess
Cause and Effect Analysis of My Last Duchess
"Communication to a relationship is like oxygen to life. Without it ... it dies." (Gaskins).
Communication is the bridge that develops good understanding between two people, without that
bridge there is no understanding, without the understanding there is no trust. Without
communication, understanding and trust, there is no love, the relationship is dead. This quote
correlates to the overall theme in the poem " My Last Duchess" by Robert Browning; and how a
communication can have a major impact in one's relationship/ marriage. There is a duke that is on a
search for a new wife, but he talks about a paint of his dead wife and how his wife was very
flirtatious to a complete stranger. The cause of the duke and duchess' unsuccessful marriage was the
lack of communication, arrogant self pride and his controlling self nature. Ultimately, no one should
ever judge someone without knowing the whole story. One may think that they understand, but they
do not.
"My Last Duchess" proves how the lack of communication can lead to an unsuccessful marriage.
The duke was always misunderstanding the duchess' character due to the lack of communication.
This is can be proven when the duke says "With anybody's gift. Who'd stoop to blame This sort of
trifling? at the end of the poem. This question was both asked and answered by the duke. What he
means is: who would bother to question the duchess on her inappropriate behaviour and he replied
no one. This proves that there was no open communication between the husband and wife. The duke
was not being honest with his wife which lead to the failure in his marriage. Since, there was no
communication between the duke and duchess, their marriage lacked of understanding which is
illustrated when the duke says "Her husband's presence only called that spot Of joy into the
Duchess' cheek:". because the duke was not conveying his feelings to the duchess, even when she
smiled to show her polite nature, he misunderstood that as flirting. It is clear that he kept misjudging
her because he did not honestly communicate with her, so therefore he did not get to know her. He
did not know much about their character

My Last Duchess Response The poem "My last Duchess" by Robert Browning is written in the first
person point of view. The narrator, the Duke of Ferrara is collaborating with the representative of the

the envoy and himself. The depiction the duke portrays on his last duchess, as well as his

Comparing the two poems Porphyria’s Lover and My Last...
By comparing the two poems Porphyria's Lover and My Last Duchess, explore how Browning deals
worth the theme of jealousy.
Jealousy is a theme that occurs quite regularly in Browning's poems.
This was particularly noticed in both of the poems 'Porphyria's Lover' and 'My Last Duchess' where
in both cases, the male protagonists were jealous of the extra attention that their lovers received
from other admirers. When studying both poems, the reader can create in their mind a vivid picture
of both the female characters. However, because the male protagonists gave their view on their
lovers, the reader is only given details about the male protagonists' feelings, not about his features or
qualities. Because of this, it needs to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poet makes the murder of Porphyria sound very peaceful and calm. It is clear to the reader that
the male protagonist cannot bear the thought of not having Porphyria with him and wants to stay
with
Porphyria in this way forever. Because of the way Browning portrays
Porphyria's lover's feelings, the reader can almost sympathise with the way that the male protagonist
is feeling even in the event of
Porphyria's murder, 'all her hair in one long string I wound, three times her little throat around and
strangled her'. With Browning creating such a big build up to Porphyria's murder and explaining it in
detail, the reader recognises that this dramatic event does mean a lot to the male protagonist and
Browning makes sure that this is the key event in the poem, and that it does not go unnoticed.
In 'My Last Duchess' the relationship between the Duke and the Duchess seems a lot less passionate
and the reader could get the impression that the two characters falsely pretend to love each other
when in fact, the truth is the opposite. This impression could be made by the reader because the
Duke describes the Duchess as a pleasant person to look at but he feels as if the Duchess takes him
for granted and she is not grateful for the luxuries she receives as a result of her husband's
popularity. This is shown on lines 32–34, 'Somehow– I know not how– as if she ranked my gift of a

"Golfe Juan" by Raoul Dufy Essay
The selected work is "Golfe Juan," an oil–on–canvas painted by French artist Raoul Dufy in 1927.
The painting measures 33" X 40" and is currently housed at the Marion Koogler McNay Art
Museum. In the painting, a single tree is rooted on a foreground terrace with a view of a seaside
village that extends out onto a peninsula.
Dufy utilized numerous formal elements to give "Golfe Juan" depth and interest. Lines are abundant
in the painting, adding depth, texture, shape, and even for separating large geographical forms such
as land and sea. In the foreground, lines are used to accentuate the features of the tree. The thin,
pointed leaves of the tree are composed of thin, straight brushstrokes of near equal length. The bark

An analogous color scheme is used as the light blue sky on the right transitions to the darker blue on
the left and then down to the water surrounding the large peninsula.
The uses of actual and visual texture manifest themselves throughout the painting. Actual texture
can be found in the thick wooded area in the right of the painting where the top of the woodland
canopy is painted in thick brushstrokes. It is also apparent in the sea, where thick, short brushstrokes
give the illusion of movement and variations in height of the waves. Although rather elementary,
visual texture can be found in the tree in the foreground, where thin, white and black lines give the
appearance of volume to the bark of the tree.
Dufy used several principles of design in his composition. First, "Golfe Juan" is asymmetrically
balanced with the vertical form of the center tree acting as the axis of symmetry. In the background,
a smoke stack on the left balances with the small peninsula in the sea on the right. Also, the land
mass, buildings, and foliage of the large peninsula on the left balance with the right hand branches
of the main tree, despite the fact that it is in the foreground.
The focal point of this painting is the tree that lies central on the canvas. It is also the foremost
feature in the picture with the town, sea, and intense foliage falling far behind

Interpretation of Poems by Robert Browning, William Yates,...
The Duke of Ferrara is a character and the speaker in the poem "My Last Duchess," by Robert
Browning. The reader witnesses a man that is controlling and whom will destroy anything that he
cannot control. One realizes immediately, the extent of the Duke's need for power in the title and in
the first line when he uses the term "My" which shows ownership (Browning). The Duke cannot
control the Duchess's "spot of joy," (Browning line 21) therefore; he commands to have her killed
(Browning line 45). He still feels the need to control the Duchess, even after death. This control is
revealed when he opens the curtain and declares, "(since none puts by / The curtain I have drawn for

He asks the sages to help him in this conversion by asking them to "consume my heart away" (Yates
line 21). This statement makes the reader believe that the speaker is surrendering to and seeking for
a spiritual rebirth from a divine being. The speaker begins to imagine a time, maybe in the after–life,
where he can be preserved. He decides he will preserve himself in unnatural things, such as art when
he says, "Once out of nature I shall never take / [m]y bodily form from any natural thing." The
speaker eventually becomes satisfied as he pictures himself in the after–life "of hammered gold and
gold enameling / To keep a drowsy emperor awake," (Yates lines 28–29) which is immortal. The
speaker goes through a sort of emotional transformation.
The poem "The Red Wheelbarrow," by William Williams, can be interpreted in several ways. The
first thing that stands out is that it seems as if every line depends on the next. The way Williams
separates each sentence, makes the reader realize that everyone and everything depends on someone
or something else. For example, if the reader reads line 1–3 he/she would think that "so much

(Williams line 4) one learns that it is a red wheelbarrow that so much depends on. The red wheel

Essay Comparing My Last Duchess And The Laboratory
"My Last Duchess" also written by Robert Browning is similar to "The Laboratory" as both are
written in the form of dramatic monologues.
"My Last Duchess" tells the story of a Duke who is arranging with a servant plans to gain the hand
of a count's daughter in marriage. The Duke takes the servant upstairs into his private quarters and
shows him several possessions the first of which is a portrait of his "last" duchess. The Duke keeps
this portrait hidden behind a curtain that only he may draw. The Duchess was apparently easily
pleased: she smiled at everything, and seemed equally as impressed when given a branch of cherries
as when the Duke married her. She also blushed easily. The Duchess's behaviour threw the Duke

He is selfish and and wants Porphyria to himself, he will not allow anyone else to have her and to
ensure this he kills her. This portrays Porphyria as his possession. The simplicity of the statement
also reflects the insanity of the speaker, to him killing Porphyria is a simplistic act.
The speaker discusses Porphyria's innocence, "Fair, perfectly pure and good" and "the smiling little
rosy head" this suggests that to him, Porphyria is pure and childlike. The alliteration draws attention
to her innocence and draws contrast to her previously seductive portrayal.
The speaker seems to want to possess Porphyria, so he reduces her to an object: a corpse, instead of
an independently–thinking individual. Further evidence of the speaker's desire is demonstrated
through the repetition in "that moment she was mine, mine". This emphasises the speaker's desire to
keep her in that perfect moment. The idea of Porphyria being the narrator's possession also suggests
something about the way in which he regards women.
The speaker's final line of the poem, "And yet God has not said a word", suggests that he has got
away with Porphyria's murder. However this could also be interpreted as suggesting that men are
superior to women as God has not condemned him for killing

Discussion Questions–Browning
1. What is this poem's expressive purpose?
This poem's expressive purpose is to show the listener what the speaker's last duchess was like, and
through this, show what the duke himself is like. He explains that this piece was done very well, and
that the expression that the duchess seems to be making in the painting could be a result of when "Fr
Pandolf chanced to say 'Her mantle laps / Over my lady's wrist too much,' or 'Paint / Must never
hope to reproduce the faint / Half flush that dies along her throat." This shows that any simple
compliments that the painter may have chosen to give to the duchess were enough to cause a an
"earnest glance" with such "depth and passion." From here on, the speaker is conveying serious
disappointment in how the duchess acted; she appreciated him just as she appreciated everything
and everyone else.
2. How many characters do we find in this poem?
In this poem, we find six individual characters. There is the duke himself, the person he is speaking
to (who is servant to a count), the count, "Fr Pandolf", "Claus of Innsbruck" who has "cast in
bronze" a statue of "Neptune...Taming a sea–horse" for the duke, and the duchess herself. There are
also some other people that are spoken of, such as the "officious fool" who brought the duchess a
"bough of cherries" and the people who are waiting for the duke and the servant.

Duchess and remembering her. His memories are not fond; he was jealous and possessive, and
frankly, a bit of a drama queen. His suspicion is evident repeatedly, starting in line 13 where he
states, "Sir, 'twas not/ Her husband's presence only, called that spot/ Of joy into the duchess' cheek".
Lines 21–24 boldly say what he was alluding to earlier on, "She had/ A heart–how shall I say? –too
soon made glad,/ Too easily impressed: she liked whate'er/ She looked on, and her looks went
everywhere." She blushed easily and enjoyed looking at things, so in his mind she was a bit
promiscuous. He thought his wife unfaithful basically because she was polite. This, as well as his
uppity attitude, are both made clear in lines 31–34, "She thanked men, –good! but thanked/
Somehow–I know not how– as if she ranked/ My gift of a nine–hundred–years–old name/ With
anybody's gift." He thinks that his name alone is a better gift than anything else; he's conceited and
entitled.

An Egocentric Ex-Husband

  • 1. An Egocentric Ex-Husband The Heart of An Egocentric Ex–Husband. Robert Browning was a nineteenth century writer and poet whose works are famous worldwide. One of his poems that has been analyzed constantly is "My Last Duchess," a dramatic monologue of a Duke who is talking to the count's messenger about wedding arrangements through speaking about his last Duchess. He started off as simple, then his superiority complex took him over. The Duke or the speaker in Robert Browning's "My Last Duchess" presents a calm demeanor at the beginning of the poem.He shows off a portrait of his ex–wife to a stranger, who we later learn is a messenger from his future father–in–law. He says to the messenger "That's my last Duchess painted on the wall/Looking as if she were alive"(Browning,1–2).This can be looked at as though she was/still is an object of his affection and that's the reason why he had a portrait painted of her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon further speculation,a little more of the Duke's personality reveals itself.Much selfishness can be found in the manner in which the Duke conceals the picture. He claims "none puts by/The curtain I have pulled for you but I"(Browning,9–10).If he's the only one who controls who sees the picture,it can be said that he might have been selfish and controlling towards her when she was alive,or in her death he finally found a way to control her. This seemed both funny and ironic, since he has another young woman waiting to be put to the ... • 3. Poem Analysis- Robert Fross; Robert Browning; Anne Bradstreet Robert Frost, "Out,Out–" 1. In line 15, Frost describes the saw as being sinister. He infers that the saw has a mind of its own, by stating that the saw jumped out of the boy's hand and cut the boy's hand terribly. Frost also makes it seem as if the saw is in a way, like a friend. He does this by demonstrating that using the saw is an advantage for the boy because it is making his job ten times easier. Without the saw, the boy would spend hours cutting through the wood. 2. In Frost's poem, the people that surround the boy must be his family. It could also very much be friends, or members of his community, along with the doctor and nurses working on his injury. The tone of the poem leads me to conclude that the "they" in the poem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, he, the Duke, controls the Duchess; or he wishes to control his Duchess. The Duke wouldn't want anyone to see the portrait of his Duchess, with her blushed cheeks, unless he was there. The same can be inferred from the last few lines of the poem, line 54–55, "Notice Neptune, though,/Taming a sea–horse, thought a rarity,/ Which Claus of Innsbruck cast in bronze for me!" The Duke is implying, that he himself is Neptune, and his last Duchess is the sea–horse. No one could have imagined that a sea–horse could be tamed, but Neptune achieved it. Identical to the way that the last Duchess herself was tamed. Adrienne Rich, "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers," In her poem, "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers," Adrienne is describing the protagonist's feelings towards her marriage. In lines 9–10, the protagonist feels that she is a prisoner of her marriage, and will only be set free when she dies. The protagonist uses the tigers as a symbol of who she wished she could be. In the first stanza of the poem, Adrienne describes the tigers as being un–fearful of the men. A trait she wishes she possessed. Sharon Olds, "Rite of Passage," 1. The speaker describes the first–grade boys at her son's birthday party as men. Their behavior is pure imitation of the men they have been around. Her description of them is ironic, because how can first–graders realistically be grown men? She also uses the concept of violence a lot in the poem. 2. In the last two ... My Last Duchess Essay In "My Last Duchess" Browning made it so that the narrator branded his wife with the stigma of being a "loose" women, making it so that she was seen as impure and tainted to all those around them (fgcu.edu). Using an AABB rhyme scheme to make the poem flow more rhythmically Browning opens the poem up with the Duke telling the story of his last duchess who was to impure and loose to be his wife as he states, "Sir, 'twas not/Her husband's presence only, called that spot/Of joy into the Duchess' cheek" (lines 13–15). Because the majority of Jews did not fit that description, they were targeted. Thousands of them were sent to concentration camps to die, while others were arrested and killed. In an attempt to save as many lives as possible, many people hid Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. Three individuals who did this are Irena Sendler, Karolina Juszczykowska, and Raoul Wallenberg. • 12. Analysis of My Last Duchess Essay 'My Last Duchess' is a poem written by Robert Browning in 1845. It's a first person narrative of a duke who is showing the ambassador around his palace and negotiating his marriage to the daughter of another powerful family. As they are walking through the palace, the duke stops and looks at the beautiful portrait of his lovely last duchess. The duke speaks his thoughts about the girl, and as the poem progresses we begin to realize that his last duchess had been murdered. "...I gave commands, then all smiles stopped together," This metaphorical sentence tells us that his commands were the ones that caused her death and her 'stop of all smiles together'. The reason behind this is that she was flirtatious with all men because "she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "My favour at her breast, the dropping of the daylight in the West". Here the Duke tells us that he believed he had a seat at her heart. However her passion for him was diminishing as quickly as a day's sunset in the West. The daylight is such a beautiful thing, but her love for him was like the 'dropping of daylight' meaning that he was losing such a beauty and he regretted. This metaphor used is a tragic metaphor. The rhetorical question used on line 23 reflects his anger. "A heart – how shall I say? – too soon made glad..." this quote explains that she was pleased by all men, and the Duke was struggling to find a way to express himself successfully. This is because he was so bothered by the fact that he didn't satisfy her enough since she needed the satisfaction from other men. His frustration also reflects that there is an element of jealousy within him. "Oh sir, she smiled..." The poet makes use of a sibilant, which is an irritating sound to hear. This emphasizes his anger and frustration. He never refers to her by name, which reflects his disturbed character. After all of the Duke's anger builds up, we learn that he lets out all of his frustration in a very negative and disturbed manner. "This grew; I gave commands; Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands as if alive." The deliberate ambiguity used in this sentence hints to the audience that he has murdered her. The poem is one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Comparison of the Attitudes Shown in The Man He Killed By Tomas Hardy and in My Last Duchess by Robert Browning The attitudes shown in the two poems "The Man he Killed" by Tomas Hardy and "My Last Duchess" Robert by Browning are very different; where as Hardy creates a modest, baffled character who feels very guilty, Browning's Duke is a vain, proud man who has killed his wife in a premeditated manner. These characteristics are also revealed through the poet's use of stanza, structure and language choices. • 17. My Last Duchess And Porphyria's Love Analysis True Love (A Discussion on Robert Browning's My Last Duchess and Porphyria's Lover.) Robert Browning wrote many amazing dramatic monologues during his time in the 1800's. "The English poet Robert Browning (1812–1889) is best known for his dramatic monologues. By vividly portraying a central character against a social background, these poems probed complex human motives in a variety of historical periods"(Gale). Browning was super influential with his monologues during the Victorian period and even still today. Several of Browning's work are about love. Two of his most notable love monologues was My Last Duchess and Porphyria's Lover. Browning's two monologues My Last Duchess and Porphyria's lover share several similarities, but also differ severely. In Browning's readings My last Duchess and Porphyria's Lover share several similarities. Both the men in these monologues kill the women they are supposed to love. The main part of these monologues is the men killing their wives. Both kill their wives because they are both jealous men, who want complete control over the woman. They feel as if the women should be their property, and only theirs. Another Similarity of these monologues is they are wrote in the man's point of view, and not the women. "Both poems show a similarity because they are both narrated from the male lover's point of view. Write about My Last Duches a poem from Duffy, one form Armitage and another from the pre 1914 poetry bank. My Last Duchess was written by Robert Browning and published in 1842. It is based on a real person. Alfonso, Duke of Ferrara (1537–1597), married fourteen year–old Lucrezia de Medici in 1158 when he was twenty one. Three years later she was killed, possibly poisoned. The Duke then arranged to marry the daughter of the count of Tyrol. As was customary at the time, the marriage arrangements were arranged between the Duke and a go between. Although we assume from the poem that the Duke murdered the Duchess the Duke never says unambiguously or openly that he killed his wife or even got anyone else to do it for him. However there are points throughout the poem that indicate the Duchess annoyed the Duke. He thinks that the Duchess should be more dignified and not so easily impressed. Specifically he faults her for finding equal pleasure in four things as if they are not at all of equal value. * The white mule that she rode * The Sun setting * A gift of fruit from an unnamed courtier The Duke emphasises in lines 31–33 that it was good for her to show gratitude, but bad that she considered 'anybody's gift' with his gift of giving her his family name which is nine hundred years old. Frequently we find that the lines contain ellipsis, which helps to develop the poem how Browning wants, so that we come to our own conclusion of exactly why and how the Duchess was murdered. However Browning places the Ellipses, and develops the poem so well that the conclusion is almost exactly the same for every reader of his poetry.

  • 22. My Last Duchess And Arnold Diction Through the use of diction, poets Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold, and John Donne characterize the speaker and, in one case, the person to whom the speaker addresses. In "My Last Duchess" and "Dover Beach," Browning and Arnold depict the nature of their speakers. While Browning exposes the Duke as pompous and controlling, Arnold portrays his speaker as pessimistic. Donne's "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" also characterizes the speaker and his wife as having an emotional love. These characterizations help the poets to create a story involving multiple characters, although only one character speaks. Therefore, they use diction to tell a story from a single point of view. This conceit also shows that the connection between the two will stretch until they are together again. Through diction, Donne creates metaphor and conceit so as to characterize the speaker and his wife as having an emotional love. • 24. My Last Duchess by Robert Browning 'My Last Duchess' is all about control and jealousy. Written by Robert Browning in 1842 (the Victorian era), the dramatic monologue is set in 16th Century Italy where the Duke of Ferrara is talking to a Count's emissary about a prospective marriage with the Counts daughter. The poem conveys the controlling nature of the Duke by the use of one stanza in the entire poem. It demonstrates this, as there is no interruption from the servant and no break whilst the Duke is talking. Any pauses in the poem, which are created by the Duke, are used to break up the Duke's thoughts, not to allow the other person to speak. Browning uses a lot of commas to build up the pace of the Duke's speech – it also eliminates any chance for the other person to talk. Browning uses a possessive pronoun in the Duke's description of his late wife. He writes, "That's my last Duchess painted on the wall." The use of the "my" shows the objectification of the "last Duchess" by the Duke. Duke Ferrara calls the late Duchess 'his' to show ownership over her, this possessiveness may confirm why he is not happy with her friendliness. This kind of behaviour was normal in the 16th century as women were seen as inferior because they were classed as property of the men. During that time, most societies were an extreme patriarchal society. Browning produces a sinister undertone whilst he is talking about his wife "painted on the wall" instead of the painting of his deceased wife, which continues to develop the ... Differing Views of Male–female Relationships in Three Poems In the three poems we experience three different views of how male–female relationships should take place. In 'My Last Duchess' we experience the view that the male should have the main role in relationships, in 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' we hear of a relationship where the woman is in total control of the man and has all the power. Finally in 'A Woman to Her Lover' we read that both men and women should have an equal amount of power and no one should be dominant. In 'My Last Duchess' the thoughts of a very possessive and arrogant Duke of Ferrara are shared. In addition to this, we can see that he is holding this piece of artwork with the same value as the picture of his wife which shows that the Duke believes that he is superior to everyone else. The strong feminist views in 'A Woman to Her Lover' however, are in total contrast to the well– known ideas in 'My Last Duchess'. Although at first 'A Woman to Her Lover' appears to only show the feminist views of relationships, it is in fact in search of equality between the males and females in relationships. 'My Last Duchess' gives the sense that a man has the leading role, and all of the power in any relationship whereas in 'A Woman to Her Lover', the ideas that both men and women should be equal in relationships are uttered. In the first stanza of the poem, we can see that the woman examines how women are typically expected to be by men (as a housewife) the "servant" and "to bear you children". The very fact that she is expressing these phrases in a critical and negative manner implies that she has a resents this idea towards this stereotypical view of women. • 32. My Last Duchess By Robert Browning My Last Duchess The dramatic monologue "My Last Duchess" was penned down by Robert Browning. In this poem, the narrator is the Duke of Ferrara, and the listener is the count's agent, through whom the Duke is arranging the proposed marriage to a second duchess. The poem is ironical and reveals its rhetorical sense, gradually. In the later part of the poem, the Duke claims that he does not have a skill in speech, but his monologue is a masterpiece of subtle rhetoric. While supposedly entertaining the listener by showing his wife's portrait, he clearly reveals his character. Through his formalized tone of rhyme, he reveals his egoistic and jealous attitude. The Duke takes control of the situation entirely as he is the only speaker throughout the poem and his way of speaking leaves no scope for interruption, by the listener. The way he addresses his listener, "That's my last duchess", calls attention to the peculiarity of his designation which he indicates in a very proud manner. The apparent pauses throughout the poem, shown by dashes, indicate hesitation as the Duke considers what to say. This clearly suggests his manipulative attitude. As soon as he points towards the standing portrait of his last wife, he asks his listener to sit down –"Will't please you sit and look at her?" His way of asking is not very polite and is more of a command which shows the psychology of a man with power. As he starts describing the portrait, he praises the painter Fra Pandolf, for ... Therefore he felt, his gift could not be bettered by anyone. This quote also suggests that the Duke was proud about his status. The Duke is obsessively possessive. This can be seen in "That's my Last Duchess painted on the wall." This quote shows how the Duke regarded the Duchess as one of objects. Also within this quote, the possessive pronoun "my" is used. • 38. My Last Duchess Essay How does Browning tell the story in 'My Last Duchess' ? Browning's 'My Last Duchess' examines the Duke of Ferrara's recollection of memories– he is showing how the Duke is remembering the past experiences with the now murdered wife he once had, but whether he loved or despised her – or both– is unclear. Browning suggests that the Duke murdered her himself. The poem opens with the narration from the Duke and the voice of dramatic monologue is established. Browning refers to the painting in the duke's voice as 'my last Duchess', using a possesive pronoun to show that the Duke has a dominant sense of character, and calling his late wife 'last' rather than 'late'. He ought, perhaps, to have said 'late', but this word establishes his materialism and shallow personality, which cause the reader to mistrust his version of events that follow. The Duke tells the painter that when other guests arrive at his palace, "they would ask me, if they durst,". The Duchess on the wall was "Too easily impressed; she liked whate'er She looked on, and her looks went everywhere". The Bishop Orders His Tomb And My Last Duchess In his poems, "The Bishop Orders His Tomb", "Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister", and "My Last Duchess", Browning explores a few sins that link to Victorian ideas yet continue to be compelling commentary on some of the modernity's biggest contradictions. These characters process the world according to their own selfish ideologies, filtering into dramatic monologues that challenge and comment on the time's social norms and growing institutions. The narrator of "Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister" is resentful and irrationally petty contrary to the monolithic idea of a monk. In "My Last Duchess" charm thinly veils the tyrannical nature of a respected Duke. Lastly, the bishop of "The Bishop Orders His Tomb" is sour with greed, jealousy, vanity, and resentment. These characters act out of their socially–prescribed nature and this, I think, is ultimately a critique of Victorian ideals of order, structure, poise, domesticity and perfection. These ideas of people and institutions rarely reflect the reality. In "Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister", a Spanish monk monologues about his irrational hatred for a Brother Lawrence. He mocks with disdain, creates ideas of Brother Lawrence that paint him in an undesirable light, dreams of sabotaging the monk's garden of melons, and even concocts a plan that will presumably send Brother Lawrence to hell. Speech is an incredibly powerful means of expression, and often gives deeper insight into who one is as a person. "My Last Duchess" by Robert Browning explores the complexity of tone in a way that is both effective and powerful. The poem is narrated by the Duke of Ferrara, who is speaking to an envoy about a painting of his previous duchess. Not only does this line deliver verbal irony, it also gives insight on the Duke's perception of his wife. Though he has no concrete evidence for her "suspicious" behavior, he does not hesitate to passively critique her. Browning additionally develops this critical personality when the Duke fantasizes about the gifts his wife received from other men. He mentions a "bough of cherries some officious fool broke in the orchard for her" (27–28) and how this gift "would draw from her alike the approving speech" (30). Though a gift of cherries is nothing significant, the Duke is annoyed by it. He does not want his wife to thank the men, because her "approving speech" is too generous and flirtatious. The image of the cherries from the orchard is something that the Duke's mind curated. It's his imagination, and that's a technique Browning utilizes to emphasize the Duke's jealous personality. One literary element that emphasizes the difference across the three texts is conflict. In My Last Duchess, the duke was conflicted because he felt there was an unequal distribution in the love he was receiving. The duke's main problem was his belief that his love was not valued as it should and this developed his envy. The envy felt by the duke was directed towards those around the duchess who also received attention from her. "... I know not how– as if she ranked my gift of a nine– hundred–years–old name with anybody's gift..." (32–34) Browning's evident demonstration of the duke's issue with the duchess giving others attention helped construct the central idea. To contrast, in Hamlet Shakespeare emphasizes the conflict that erupted in response to the extreme act prompted by envy. Claudius murdered because he was envious and wanted what his brother, the king, had and when Hamlet discovered this he was distraught and brought to the brink of madness trying to seek revenge. " But howsoever thou pursuest this act, taint not thy mind..." (Act 1, Scene 5) Shakespeare makes sure to detail how Claudius' envy led to murder and its heavy impact on Hamlet and his state of mind. Lastly, in A Room Of One's Own it is indirectly revealed that the women were envious of the men. Woolf allows leeway while at the same time asserting that the women were envious due to the circumstances and limitations placed upon them because of their gender. Unlike the other two stories, the conflict that was unraveled led to suicides and the loss of sanity between the women instead of those around them. ".. a highly gifted girl who had tried to use her gift for poetry would have been so thwarted and hindered by other people, so tortured and pulled asunder by her own contrary instincts, that she must have lost her health and sanity.." • 58. Analysis Of ' My Last Duchess ' By Robert Browning Londyn Zografakis English Period 8 7 November 2014 Throughout history, gender roles have been an important barrier in society. Women are forced to satisfy expectations established by men and society. "My Last Duchess," by Robert Browning, focuses on the powerful Duke establishing certain expectations of the Duchess, and attempting to control her. Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, concentrates on Laertes establishing certain expectations of Ophelia, and seeking to control her. A Room of One's Own, by Virginia Woolf, centers on societal expectations of Judith, and her father trying to control her. In all three texts, men have the ability to control women and have the freedom to do as they please. Women must conform to the expectations of faithfulness, attentiveness, and chastity. "My Last Duchess," by Robert Browning, depicts powerful husbands attempting to control the actions of their wives as they are free to do as they please. In contrast, women are expected to be faithful and attentive only to their husbands. The power and control of the Duke is conveyed by a painting of the Duchess. It belongs to the Duke and is referred to as "my last Duchess" (1). The use of "my" demonstrates the possessive nature of the Duke and his claim of the Duchess as his own personal possession, much like the painting itself. As the Duke persists on forcing domination upon the Duchess, he is greatly displeased to find that she treats and considers him as the same value as nearly any other man. ... • 60. My Last Duchess By Robert Browning "My Last Duchess" The poem "My Last Duchess" is a masterful example of a dramatic monologue written by Robert Browning. In this poem the narrator is a duke who is discussing his murder of his last duchess with a man with whom he is arranging his marriage to a count's daughter. As it is a monologue, the man being spoken to does not say a word. It is believed by many that this character is based on the Italian Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso II, who sought out the marriage of a count's daughter following the poisoning of his wife (Bender 5). The theme of this poem is the blatant and unapologetic corruption of power (Marchino 3). The duke uses the resources available to him to force others to conform to his wishes. Three prevalent aspects of the Dukes personality that are instrumental in the meaning behind this poem are his need of control, his arrogance, and his jealousy. The duke's necessity for control is one primary drive for his actions. He needs to be in control of every aspect of his life, and if he can not control something he will use his influence to end it. The use of a dramatic monologue is brilliant for a character so obsessed with control. The dominance of his side of the argument places emphasis on his need for control (Marchino 2). It was an act of great prowess on the part of Browning to craft a character that so greatly benefits from the writing style. This aspect of his personality is where you see the majority of his corruption of power. He was not in control of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Cause And Effect Analysis Of My Last Duchess Cause and Effect Analysis of My Last Duchess "Communication to a relationship is like oxygen to life. Without it ... it dies." (Gaskins). Communication is the bridge that develops good understanding between two people, without that bridge there is no understanding, without the understanding there is no trust. Without communication, understanding and trust, there is no love, the relationship is dead. This quote correlates to the overall theme in the poem " My Last Duchess" by Robert Browning; and how a communication can have a major impact in one's relationship/ marriage. There is a duke that is on a search for a new wife, but he talks about a paint of his dead wife and how his wife was very flirtatious to a complete stranger. The cause of the duke and duchess' unsuccessful marriage was the lack of communication, arrogant self pride and his controlling self nature. Ultimately, no one should ever judge someone without knowing the whole story. One may think that they understand, but they do not. "My Last Duchess" proves how the lack of communication can lead to an unsuccessful marriage. The duke was always misunderstanding the duchess' character due to the lack of communication. This is can be proven when the duke says "With anybody's gift. Who'd stoop to blame This sort of trifling? at the end of the poem. This question was both asked and answered by the duke. What he means is: who would bother to question the duchess on her inappropriate behaviour and he replied no one. This proves that there was no open communication between the husband and wife. The duke was not being honest with his wife which lead to the failure in his marriage. Since, there was no communication between the duke and duchess, their marriage lacked of understanding which is illustrated when the duke says "Her husband's presence only called that spot Of joy into the Duchess' cheek:". because the duke was not conveying his feelings to the duchess, even when she smiled to show her polite nature, he misunderstood that as flirting. It is clear that he kept misjudging her because he did not honestly communicate with her, so therefore he did not get to know her. He did not know much about their character The duke was born in a family with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The narrator, the Duke of Ferrara is collaborating with the representative of the father of his succeeding bride. The Duke speaks about his last duchess with the dialogue between the envoy and himself. The depiction the duke portrays on his last duchess, as well as his forthcoming duchess reveals the true character of the Duke to the reader. The poet has done a tremendous job speaking in a non–cohesive manner, placing the theme in between the lines. • 68. Comparing the two poems Porphyria’s Lover and My Last... By comparing the two poems Porphyria's Lover and My Last Duchess, explore how Browning deals worth the theme of jealousy. Jealousy is a theme that occurs quite regularly in Browning's poems. This was particularly noticed in both of the poems 'Porphyria's Lover' and 'My Last Duchess' where in both cases, the male protagonists were jealous of the extra attention that their lovers received from other admirers. When studying both poems, the reader can create in their mind a vivid picture of both the female characters. However, because the male protagonists gave their view on their lovers, the reader is only given details about the male protagonists' feelings, not about his features or qualities. Because of this, it needs to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The poet makes the murder of Porphyria sound very peaceful and calm. It is clear to the reader that the male protagonist cannot bear the thought of not having Porphyria with him and wants to stay with Porphyria in this way forever. Because of the way Browning portrays Porphyria's lover's feelings, the reader can almost sympathise with the way that the male protagonist is feeling even in the event of Porphyria's murder, 'all her hair in one long string I wound, three times her little throat around and strangled her'. With Browning creating such a big build up to Porphyria's murder and explaining it in detail, the reader recognises that this dramatic event does mean a lot to the male protagonist and Browning makes sure that this is the key event in the poem, and that it does not go unnoticed. In 'My Last Duchess' the relationship between the Duke and the Duchess seems a lot less passionate and the reader could get the impression that the two characters falsely pretend to love each other when in fact, the truth is the opposite. This impression could be made by the reader because the Duke describes the Duchess as a pleasant person to look at but he feels as if the Duchess takes him for granted and she is not grateful for the luxuries she receives as a result of her husband's popularity. This is shown on lines 32–34, 'Somehow– I know not how– as if she ranked my gift of a nine–hundred–years–old name with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. "Golfe Juan" by Raoul Dufy Essay The selected work is "Golfe Juan," an oil–on–canvas painted by French artist Raoul Dufy in 1927. The painting measures 33" X 40" and is currently housed at the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum. In the painting, a single tree is rooted on a foreground terrace with a view of a seaside village that extends out onto a peninsula. Dufy utilized numerous formal elements to give "Golfe Juan" depth and interest. Lines are abundant in the painting, adding depth, texture, shape, and even for separating large geographical forms such as land and sea. In the foreground, lines are used to accentuate the features of the tree. The thin, pointed leaves of the tree are composed of thin, straight brushstrokes of near equal length. The bark of the tree ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An analogous color scheme is used as the light blue sky on the right transitions to the darker blue on the left and then down to the water surrounding the large peninsula. The uses of actual and visual texture manifest themselves throughout the painting. Actual texture can be found in the thick wooded area in the right of the painting where the top of the woodland canopy is painted in thick brushstrokes. It is also apparent in the sea, where thick, short brushstrokes give the illusion of movement and variations in height of the waves. Although rather elementary, visual texture can be found in the tree in the foreground, where thin, white and black lines give the appearance of volume to the bark of the tree. Dufy used several principles of design in his composition. First, "Golfe Juan" is asymmetrically balanced with the vertical form of the center tree acting as the axis of symmetry. In the background, a smoke stack on the left balances with the small peninsula in the sea on the right. Also, the land mass, buildings, and foliage of the large peninsula on the left balance with the right hand branches of the main tree, despite the fact that it is in the foreground. The focal point of this painting is the tree that lies central on the canvas. It is also the foremost feature in the picture with the town, sea, and intense foliage falling far behind ... • 72. Interpretation of Poems by Robert Browning, William Yates,... The Duke of Ferrara is a character and the speaker in the poem "My Last Duchess," by Robert Browning. The reader witnesses a man that is controlling and whom will destroy anything that he cannot control. One realizes immediately, the extent of the Duke's need for power in the title and in the first line when he uses the term "My" which shows ownership (Browning). The Duke cannot control the Duchess's "spot of joy," (Browning line 21) therefore; he commands to have her killed (Browning line 45). He still feels the need to control the Duchess, even after death. This control is revealed when he opens the curtain and declares, "(since none puts by / The curtain I have drawn for you, but I)" (Browning line 9–10). The Duke is speaking to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He asks the sages to help him in this conversion by asking them to "consume my heart away" (Yates line 21). This statement makes the reader believe that the speaker is surrendering to and seeking for a spiritual rebirth from a divine being. The speaker begins to imagine a time, maybe in the after–life, where he can be preserved. He decides he will preserve himself in unnatural things, such as art when he says, "Once out of nature I shall never take / [m]y bodily form from any natural thing." The speaker eventually becomes satisfied as he pictures himself in the after–life "of hammered gold and gold enameling / To keep a drowsy emperor awake," (Yates lines 28–29) which is immortal. The speaker goes through a sort of emotional transformation. The poem "The Red Wheelbarrow," by William Williams, can be interpreted in several ways. The first thing that stands out is that it seems as if every line depends on the next. The way Williams separates each sentence, makes the reader realize that everyone and everything depends on someone or something else. For example, if the reader reads line 1–3 he/she would think that "so much depends / upon / a red wheel" (Williams lines 1–3). However, after reading the next line "barrow" (Williams line 4) one learns that it is a red wheelbarrow that so much depends on. The red wheel depends on the barrow to be a helpful tool; the wheel would be useless without the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Essay Comparing My Last Duchess And The Laboratory "My Last Duchess" also written by Robert Browning is similar to "The Laboratory" as both are written in the form of dramatic monologues. "My Last Duchess" tells the story of a Duke who is arranging with a servant plans to gain the hand of a count's daughter in marriage. The Duke takes the servant upstairs into his private quarters and shows him several possessions the first of which is a portrait of his "last" duchess. The Duke keeps this portrait hidden behind a curtain that only he may draw. The Duchess was apparently easily pleased: she smiled at everything, and seemed equally as impressed when given a branch of cherries as when the Duke married her. She also blushed easily. The Duchess's behaviour threw the Duke into a jealous rage, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is selfish and and wants Porphyria to himself, he will not allow anyone else to have her and to ensure this he kills her. This portrays Porphyria as his possession. The simplicity of the statement also reflects the insanity of the speaker, to him killing Porphyria is a simplistic act. The speaker discusses Porphyria's innocence, "Fair, perfectly pure and good" and "the smiling little rosy head" this suggests that to him, Porphyria is pure and childlike. The alliteration draws attention to her innocence and draws contrast to her previously seductive portrayal. The speaker seems to want to possess Porphyria, so he reduces her to an object: a corpse, instead of an independently–thinking individual. Further evidence of the speaker's desire is demonstrated through the repetition in "that moment she was mine, mine". This emphasises the speaker's desire to keep her in that perfect moment. The idea of Porphyria being the narrator's possession also suggests something about the way in which he regards women. The speaker's final line of the poem, "And yet God has not said a word", suggests that he has got away with Porphyria's murder. However this could also be interpreted as suggesting that men are superior to women as God has not condemned him for killing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Discussion Questions On William Shakespeare 's ' The... Racquel Marsh Prof. Schoolfield English 1315.008 10 October 2016 Discussion Questions–Browning 1. What is this poem's expressive purpose? This poem's expressive purpose is to show the listener what the speaker's last duchess was like, and through this, show what the duke himself is like. He explains that this piece was done very well, and that the expression that the duchess seems to be making in the painting could be a result of when "Fr Pandolf chanced to say 'Her mantle laps / Over my lady's wrist too much,' or 'Paint / Must never hope to reproduce the faint / Half flush that dies along her throat." This shows that any simple compliments that the painter may have chosen to give to the duchess were enough to cause a an "earnest glance" with such "depth and passion." From here on, the speaker is conveying serious disappointment in how the duchess acted; she appreciated him just as she appreciated everything and everyone else. 2. How many characters do we find in this poem? In this poem, we find six individual characters. There is the duke himself, the person he is speaking to (who is servant to a count), the count, "Fr Pandolf", "Claus of Innsbruck" who has "cast in bronze" a statue of "Neptune...Taming a sea–horse" for the duke, and the duchess herself. There are also some other people that are spoken of, such as the "officious fool" who brought the duchess a "bough of cherries" and the people who are waiting for the duke and the servant. 3. • 80. What Is The Tone Of My Last Duchess Love, death, and infidelity were weaved through the readings this week. In "My Last Duchess" by Robert Browning, the speaker is a Duke who is looking at a painting of his last (now deceased) Duchess and remembering her. His memories are not fond; he was jealous and possessive, and frankly, a bit of a drama queen. His suspicion is evident repeatedly, starting in line 13 where he states, "Sir, 'twas not/ Her husband's presence only, called that spot/ Of joy into the duchess' cheek". Lines 21–24 boldly say what he was alluding to earlier on, "She had/ A heart–how shall I say? –too soon made glad,/ Too easily impressed: she liked whate'er/ She looked on, and her looks went everywhere." She blushed easily and enjoyed looking at things, so in his mind she was a bit promiscuous. He thought his wife unfaithful basically because she was polite. This, as well as his uppity attitude, are both made clear in lines 31–34, "She thanked men, –good! but thanked/ Somehow–I know not how– as if she ranked/ My gift of a nine–hundred–years–old name/ With anybody's gift." He thinks that his name alone is a better gift than anything else; he's conceited and entitled. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
