Nutrition Labeling Essay
Introduction
The increase in the worldwide obesity and diet related chronic diseases over the previous several decades warrants the need of approaches to combat
these disorders. Poor dietary practices, high energy intake, high intake of fat, saturated fat and cholesterol along with low intake of fiber and low
physical activity are the major risk factors for these disorders. In order to overcome these problems, the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA)
of 1990 requires all packaged foods to bear nutrition labeling and all health claim. This law was intended to provide clearer information to consumers,

Therefore, food labels identify a variety of information about a product. These labels provide the consumer with the needed information and the ability

According to many studies and observations, energy content of foods are among the most read information on food labels by consumers ,or in other
words, Calories. Many individuals depend on counting daily calories to monitor their daily caloric intake, to ensure successful weight loss, gain, or
simply weight maintenance. However, doubts regarding the accuracy of energy content of packaged foods written on labels or on restaurant menus
have been expressed.

Imagine your selling sodas but you hardly win any money why,

Nutrition management software is promising for CKD self–management. However, existing software tools are not completely satisfactory and have
limitations. In this section, we list the open issues of existing nutrition management software and propose some potential solutions.
A.Integration with personal health records
Currently, many existing software tools require users to manually enter their health status into the software, which involves labor–intensive data input.
This inefficient process can discourage users from using the tools. Second, many users have insufficient medical knowledge to fully understand their
health conditions and can misunderstand certain medical terms. As a result, the quality of patient health data is questionable. Third, many of these data
elements are dynamic and change over time depending on the user's health status. The user's weight can decrease over time due to malnutrition. The
user's kidney function can decline as CKD progresses. Laboratory test results typically change on a daily basis. Thus, it is necessary to update the
database from time to time.
To obtain more up to date data of the user, we can synchronize thenutrition management software with personal health records. This will enable the
software to retrieve patient health data from the healthcare information systems. This will increase the software's usability because the user does not

Magazine, published an article referring to how the FDA could improve and redesign their food label, stating that the labels could add "Realistic

label. Being familiar with the 5/20 Rule and the basic steps to reading a nutrition facts label are essential for living a healthy lifestyle. The U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (2011) provided great information on both aspects through video and illustration. The 5/20 Rule is simply a way to
track if a certain food is a good or bad source of a particular nutrient; if it falls below 5%, then it is not a good source for that nutrient, but if it contains
more than 20%, it is (USFoodandDrugAdmin, 2011). I tested this method on a common pantry item, cereal, and found it quite helpful. Also, the FDA
(2014) provides a list of steps for understanding these nutrients and more found on the nutrition facts labels. These steps include checking the serving
size, considering the amount of calories and those from fat, limiting specific nutrients, getting enough of other nutrients, understanding the footnote,
and knowing the Percent Daily Value (Administration, 2014). All of these pieces of information aid in living a healthy lifestyle.

There is no need to memorize the % DV, just use these guidelines when you are comparing labels:
5% or less is low – try to stay low in total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium
20% or more is high – try to stay high in vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and dietary fiber

The few nutrients listed first are the ones we eat too many off such as, fat cholesterol and sodium, you should limit those nutrients , they can increase

Moreover Calories also play an important role in a health–conscious nutrition. Calories are a unit to measure energy in our food, it is sometimes written
in kilocalories (kcal) or in Kilojoules (kj). The majority are focused on Calories and how many Calories they are allowed to take in. The Average
amount of Calories a man needs per day is 2500 kcal, women in contrast need an average of 2000 kcal. Nevertheless the amount of calories needed
differs from person to person.
To decrease your intake of salt you don 't have to cut back the amount of salt you add to your food, because most of the salt we are taking in ( –75%) is

It is very common nowadays to walk into a restaurant and look at a menu and see a side note with the amount of calories that each plate holds. As
well as walking into a grocery store, you will always notice a nutritional label on the food product. A nutritional label tends to always be located on
the back, front or side of the food product. These nutritional labels are for educational use, used to inform communities, consumers, and overall the
people on what they are purchasing. Food labels go all the way back to England, when the king in the 13th century proclaimed the first food
regulatory law, "The assize of bread" [lefever:2:2009]. The law prohibited bakers from mixing ground peas and beans into bread dough [Lefevre:
2:2009]. Throughout the decades much has evolved and food regulations have been enforced. In 1991 the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990
made it mandatory for all foods to obtain nutritional facts and basic per serving nutritional information in the U.S [Lefevre: pg3: 2009]. With this

The demand for labels on food products became a growing interest in the 1960s when consumers became apprehensive about processed foods and were
curious about the entirety of the products they were consuming. Prior to this time period meals were typically grown, prepared, and consumed within
the household; therefore, there was little to no necessary need for foods to contain any type of labeling. However, after processed foods gained
popularity, an increase in the consumption of such products resulted in an increase in the demand for nutrient content information as well. In 1967 the
government responded to this demand by enabling the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, which required producers to label products with an identity
statement, the name and location of the manufacture, as well as the net amount of contents.1 Overall, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) holds
responsibility for providing consumers with the proper and correct information regarding a product's ingredients and context of its nutrients as well for
most food items.2 Today, the FDA gives approval for three different types of label claims that can be placed on products. Health claims, structure
/function, and nutrient content claims are all FDA approved claims that can be displayed on food labels. The use and relationship that health, structure
