Humble beginnings
The farms of Isabela, then, served as a springboard for me to be more
involved in agricultural activity, even at the small but growing rate of chief
kamote-picker and cow-milker to fruit salesman, in order to help my family.

2. I grew up with this acute sense that we lived on the land, and so many
different factors played in to how much it gave to us, as we cared for it.
My first lessons were from the experiences of growing munggo in wet
tissue paper in a plastic dish, starting from when I was six years old or so.
As before, munggo is a special addition to a hardy and healthy meal,
cooked with malunggay and other seasonings, or grown into bean sprouts
to add to salads, stews, and anything under the sun.
Several handfuls of round little green beans and a few boxes of tissue from
the drug store later, I was able to see the fruit of my labors translate into
sprouts and small green stalks. What a delight it was to add the togue to
the family dinner, tossed in a little toyo and salt; what a difference special
attention and a little determination made to inspire change, even at the
most minimal level.
I had to remember these little beans when starting the cooperative with a
handful of friends and willing volunteers; remember what Jesus said about
faith being as small as the mustard seed, but growing into a tree that
reached the heavens? J
