2. My life changed for the better after I graduated and began my first bachelor
undergraduate degree in Physics at the University of San Nicolas Iloilo. It
was my biggest wish at first to go to Manila to get a Bachelor of Science in
Architecture at the University of the Philippines or the University of Sto.
Tomas, but I thought about Mama and Papa—not just how much it would
cost to study in Manila, but also how sad I would be if I wasn’t close to
them and my siblings during these crucial years. So I stayed in Iloilo for my
first years of school… and they were still so wonderful.
I am so thankful for all of the people I met in my life at San Nicolas. First, I
loved my classmates— affectionately called ‘Nicos’ and ‘Nicas’—and we
spent many a night at our dorms both trying to solve our equations for
Physics 105 and playing Pusoy Dos. There were lots of laughs, lots of fruit
shakes at Mang Eddie’s at the Iloilo Town Arcade, and lots of visits to the
movie houses (when movies cost less than twenty pesos!). Second, I loved
the people who were responsible for my formation—my professors from my
home college, established scientists by trade, and the professors from the
liberal arts, who taught me about arts and the humanities.
