It is within the human nature to be interested in other people's experiences. Whether it be with
reality shows or blog posts, people like to hear different incidents through diverse perspectives.
Writers take advantage of this curiosity and try to tie experiences into their works. Many times
writers will include experiences of their own in order to convince their audience of their perspective
on a subject. These personal experiences are done in order to make an impact on the audience and it
is written in a certain way to make it the most efficient for the readers. The use of personal
anecdotes is effective when details are described to the point where readers can create their own

Audience analysis is an important part of the writing process because the writer needs to be able to
understand the needs and interests of the intended group they are writing too. The writer will direct
their writing style to the intended audience so that it is easy to understand (for customers) or direct
(often used for executives). How the message is presented will be even more effective depending on
the tone used.

Active Audience Theory
Four theorists are the contributing authors of the active research theory. These authors evolved the
role audience play and their ability to actively engage with communication medians. The idea of
deconstructionism was the focus of the work of Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault during the
1960's. Later in the twentieth century theorist Raymond Bauer developed The Obstinate Audience.
In the early 1980's a theorist by the name of Stuart Hall challenged the traditional theories of an
audience role in the media and developed his encoding/decoding theory. Each contributed to the
current understanding of the active role audiences engage in when information is presented. In this
section a brief description of the earlier theory of the audiences as passive viewers will be presented
to provide a background of the role of the audience. Next, the major theorist and their contributions
to the active audience theory will be presented. The section will end with a summary of active
research theory and its contribution to communication medians today.

thoughts that I had, which were that the "target audience" means a group or type of people that are

work realizing that I was missing the basic point and the reason I was not understanding the

believability of the scene is compromised and it creates a sense of "fakeness". This idea can also be

I decided to visit with three people about their research poster projects. The first poster I visited was
called, "These Shining Lives" by Elise Tauer. She discussed how she helped produce the lights used
in musical performances, such as plays. Elise went into detail about how important lights are in
plays because they help the audience see the performance and add effects to the acts. She discussed
how different forms of lights are used for different areas to give a mood for that area. For example,
there was a house in a recent play that had pink lights showing through the window to give the

Their hypothesis that stated athletes will have a shorter reaction time when shown an image of the
ball they train with was supported in this study. The study included twenty–four participants;
fourteen participants played either basketball or soccer and the other ten did not. The participants

insights: it is useful for persuading your audience, it helps to plan in advance, and you should
address both sides of a situation.
Communicating has the purpose of not only conveying information, but also persuading the

This was a new experience for all of us and an important one as the session would be evaluated as
