Step 1: Learn about the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design
Your task for this assignment will be to undertake a formal analysis of different pieces of artwork. There are standard terms used to analyze and describe any piece of artwork. Please begin this assignment by learning about the Elements of Art and then the Principles of Design.
Elements of Art
For this assignment, we will consider six elements of art: line, shape, form, space, color, and texture.
Read about and see examples of each element on the J. Paul Getty Museum website: http://www.getty.edu/education/teachers/building_lessons/formal_analysis.html

Principles of Design
For this assignment, we will only consider three principles of design: balance, emphasis, and movement.

Local Students - There are several different campus tours
available on this website. You must complete Route 1, which
features 16 sculptures. (See the "List of Approved Events" for
the specific list of art work for route 1.). Participate in the tour
on your own time. If you choose, you may complete this over
the course of multiple days. Be sure to leave yourself time to
complete the assignment before the due date. A few of the
works may be moved this semester due to construction; perhaps
2-3. If one or two are no longer available, you do not need to
replace them with something else. There are plenty of
wonderful works to see.
Step 3: Complete the written assignment
As outlined in the instructions below, you will select one (1)
piece of art from the Museum of Art, one (1) sculpture from the
Campus Sculpture Tour, and then another one (1) piece from
either the museum or the tour. Your final paper should include
analysis of THREE (3) pieces of art, as explained below. The
expected length of a paper that meets rubric requirements is
approximately 2 pages.
Format your paper as follows. Please include the bolded text in
your paper, but do not copy the text of the prompt into your
paper.
Part A—Museum of Art, Date Visited: MM/DD/YY (for
example: Museum of Art, Date Visited: 09/18/12)
Piece 1—Art Medium (for example: Piece 1—Oil Painting)
First Impression: What are your first impressions of this piece?
What does it appear to be made of? Is your initial impression
positive or negative? Why?
Museum Card: Now, note the following information about the
4. piece:
Title
Date
Medium
Artist
Extended Viewing: Look, or stare, at the work for about 10
minutes. Examine it from as many angles as you can (distance
people can not view indifferent angles). Did this extended
viewing and thinking change your perception of the work?
Why? Did you notice any additional detail in the work?
Elements of Art: Formally analyze this work by choosing two
(2) of the Elements of Art that are most emphasized in this
piece of art. Clearly discuss each of the two elements you have
chosen and how they are used in this piece. What is the effect of
each of these two elements? Your response should demonstrate
that you understand these two elements of art.
Note: You should choose different elements for different pieces
of art, so that you comment on ALL of the elements by the end
of the assignment. Your assignment must include all six
elements of art.
Principles of Design: Continue your formal analysis by
selecting one (1) of the Principles of Design that is most
significant in this piece of artwork. (Remember that in this
assignment we are only considering balance, emphasis, and
movement.) What role does this principle of design play in the
piece of art? What is its effect? Your response should
demonstrate that you understand this principle of design.
Note: You should choose different principles for different
pieces of art, so that you comment on ALL three of the
principles by the end of the assignment. Your assignment must
include all three principles of design.
Part B—Campus Sculpture Tour, Date Visited: MM/DD/YY
Piece 2— Sculpture
Repeat the exercise described above (First Impression, Museum
Card, Extended Viewing, Elements of Art, Principles of
Design).
5. Part C—Best of Show, Date Visited: MM/DD/YY
Piece 3—Art Medium or Sculpture (please include the
appropriate label for the piece you’ve chosen; for example:
Piece 3—Outdoor Sculpture)
For the third piece, please select a piece either from the
Museum of Art or from the Campus Sculpture Tour. Select the
piece that is your “best of show.”
First, repeat the exercise described above, beneath Piece 1 (First
Impression, Museum Card, Extended Viewing, Elements of Art,
Principles of Design).
Second, write a brief paragraph, explaining why you’ve chosen
this piece as your “best of show.”
Part D—Comparison
Write a paragraph comparing your experience touring the
Museum of Art with your experience completing the Campus
Sculpture Tour. In your comparison, please discuss the
following factors in this order: environment (distance people -
as best you can), differences in the size of the pieces, and
differences in the media. At the end of this paragraph, explain
which tour you preferred: the Museum of Art or the Campus
Sculpture Tour. Why?
When you submit this assignment, please only include a
comment if you have a question or another pertinent message to
send to the instructional team. Do not include redundant
information in the comments box, such as your name, A#, or file
name. Each comment sends an email to the instructional team;
entering redundant information clogs the system and delays our
ability to respond to students who actually need help.

· Secure your tickets the first week of classes. Many of these
events will sell out. Even some free events may require tickets.
· When you purchase your tickets, be sure to ask about student
discounts. To receive the discount for university events you
need to purchase your ticket(s) in person at the CCA Box
Office. You will also need your USU ID. The CCA Box Office
is located in the Kent Concert Hall foyer, west side.
· For all events, please read the corresponding written
assignment's instructions prior to attending the event.
· Compare the dates of events with the dates when assignments
will be due. Notice that approved events are available over
several months at the beginning of the semester. Modules 5,7,8
appear on the course calendar middle to late in the semester.
You may pick an event early in the semester for a module about
music or theatre. Quizzes and assignments for those modules
are not due until the third or fourth month. There may be a long
time between the event and when the assignments are due.
Remember that you may complete any module early, once you
15. have successfully passed the Orientation Quiz. Or.....you will
have to keep your notes of the event handy for when you
complete the module later, quiz and assignment. Plan ahead!
We wish you the best with this.

For this academic year, everyone in the L01 section (local),

You do not need to visit the museum personally. Some of the
instructions in the assignment are for you to observe the art

you can. The Museum people assured me that their photos will
be of high resolution so you can expand the picture to that
end.
