You must complete an Electronic Presentation on Black Culture. You will select and present on the significances of two works of black culture. The first work you select must be a work of African-American literature, poetry, music, fashion, dance, or some other cultural art form that was created and/or popularized by an African American during the time periods of the Harlem and Chicago Renaissances (1917-1949). Your second work of black culture must have been created and/or popularized by a black person (but not necessarily an African American) within YOUR lifetime. For example, if you were born in 1999, your second cultural selection needs to have been created by a black person between 1999 and the present. The two works you select to present do not have to share a cultural form (i.e. one work can be a poem and the other can be a song; one work can be a painting and the other can be a fashion trend). Nor do the two works have to share a particular theme. You may choose to do a compare-and-contrast type presentation. But, you do not have to. In presenting the works, you will need to provide background information on your chosen works (i.e. when where the works created; who created them or made them famous; and, what impact did the works have on the cultural landscape when and since they first appeared?). You will also have to briefly explain why you made those particular selections, and explain what you think each work tells people about the ways in which African-American/Black culture and experiences remained congruent and/or changed from the eras of the Harlem and Chicago Renaissances to the modern era. Moreover, your Electronic Presentation on Black Culture must be creative in both style and substance. .

In the U.S. what used to be referred to as "the black problem" has been particularly thorny.
Through most of the 19th century, by far the most-popular multimedia performance-form (music, dance, jokes, costumes) in the U.S. (with some popularity in England and elsewhere) was blackface minstrelsy, where both white and some black performers (mostly male) "blacked up" using burnt-cork and oil over their faces, while exaggerating and reddening their lips, wearing white gloves, etc., a disgusting but fascinating deep strain at the root of American popular culture.
But this thread is about roughly 1890-1939; what are some ways that African-Americans began to develop their own subcultures both in the South (where the vast majority of African-Americans lived in earlier, slave years) but also growing in the North (particularly business and industrial centers). BLACK REVOLUTIONARY THEATRE is the name given to that
special Black American strain of theatre, film, and agitprop public
activity that originated in the Black Arts Movement, the Black
religious and spiritual sects, and in Third World Revolutionary
Cultural and Political societies. [Eds.]

The Black Arts Movement is radically opposed to any concept of the
artist that alienates him from his community. This movement is the
aesthetic and spiritual sister of the Black Power concept. As such, it
envisions an art that speaks directly to the needs and aspirations of Black
America. In order to perform this task, the Black Arts Movement proposes a radical reordering of the
western cultural aesthetic. It proposes a separate symbolism, mythology, critique, and iconology. The
Black Arts and the Black Power concept both relate broadly to the Afro-American’s desire for self-
determination and nationhood. Both concepts are nationalistic. One is concerned with the relationship
between art and politics; the other with the art of politics.
Recently, these two movements have begun to merge: the political values inherent in the Black Power
concept are now finding concrete expression in the aesthetics of Afro-American dramatists, poets,
choreographers, musicians, and novelists. A main tenet of Black Power is the necessity for Black people
to define the world in their own terms. The Black artist has made the same point in the context of
aesthetics. The two movements postulate that there are in fact and in spirit two Americas — one black,
one white. The Black artist takes this to mean that his primary duty is to speak to the spiritual and cultural
needs of Black people. Therefore, the main thrust of this new breed of contemporary writers is to confront
the contradictions arising out of the Black man’s experience in the racist West. Currently, these writers
are re-evaluating western aesthetic, the traditional role of the writer, and the social function of art.
Implicit in this re-evaluation is the need to develop a “black aesthetic.” It is the opinion of many Black
writers, I among them, that the Western aesthetic has run its course: it is impossible to construct anything
meaningful within its decaying structure. We advocate a cultural revolution in art and ideas. The cultural
values inherent in western history must either be radicalized or destroyed, and we will probably find that
even radicalization is impossible. In fact, what is needed is a whole new system of ideas. Poet Don L.
Lee1 expresses it:
. . . We must destroy Faulkner, dick, jane,2 and other perpetrators of evil. It’s time for DuBois, Nat

In order to understand contemporary art in South Africa, the political background of South Africa must first be understood. When Nelson Mandela became the country’s first black president in 1994, apartheid officially ended. Yet because apartheid controlled the lives of black people so extensively, the end of apartheid did not result in the end of oppression or racial segregation. Although racial segregation and oppression were no longer legal, the ideas, beliefs, and practices of apartheid had been so deeply ingrained in South Africans, both white and black, that Apartheid did not simply disappear with the pronouncement of its legal demise. This is why, even after the apartheid regime ended, South African artists continued to produce work which dealt with elements of the old system of government.
Even though apartheid had existed for centuries, South African artists have not always focused on apartheid and themes of oppression and injustice in their work. One of the earliest and most influential traditions in South African art is the rock art paintings and engravings by the Sans people. Rock art often depicted landscape and people and incorporated geometric elements, and this tradition is still influential in some contemporary art in South Africa.
Another tradition in South African art began during the colonial era with the arrival of the Dutch settlers in 1652. As the Dutch expanded their settlement in South Africa, they increasingly imposed Western culture on the native South Africans, which affected art traditions. Before long, art was seen as a method of recording daily happenings in South Africa for the colonial masters, claiming that their work depicted everyday life in South Africa.
With colonialism drawing to a close at the end of the 19th century, South African artists began making works of art that illustrated the true realities of life in South Africa. The two most influential artists at the time were Jan Volschenk (1853-1936) and Hugo Naude (1869-1941). Volschenk was a self-taught painter of landscapes, and his work is often described as primitive. Naude on the other hand left South Africa to study art in London. When he returned to South Africa, Naude intially intended to be a portrait painter, but found himself very drawn to the outdoors and painting landscapes. Volschenk and Naude were considered the first native South African professional painters.
Following in the footsteps of Volschenk and Naude, South African artists soon began to look to art as a way to communicate ideas and experiences. "The orientation of local paintings had begun to shift from perceptual description of the landscape to the mechanics of visual expression and the search for personally valid methods of communicating experiences." We need to look at the context of a piece of art as well as its formal qualities to understand it.
Context can be historical, cultural, social, and political
Art is not created in a vacuum. Behind every work of art are layers of context. It is important to look
not only at the formal qualities of a work of art but also at the time period in which it was created.
What events were taking place at this time and in the location where the art was created? What events
were happening in the artist's or writer's life (if it is known) at the time the work of art was created?
What were the values and ideals from the time period in which the artwork was created?
Context can take many forms: historical, cultural, social, and political. It is important to understand the
context in which a work of art was created in order to understand the work of art in its own right and
within its own time, but also to understand how the context surrounding the work of art has changed
over time. In the process of addressing a work of art's context, you can see how aesthetic values and
ideals have also changed, thereby changing a work of art's context over time.
This module provides you with the tools needed to identify and then consider the context behind works
of art in general and works of Impressionist art. You will then have the chance to apply what you have
learned to analyze a work of art through its different contexts.

Historical significance of the World's Columbian Exposition
The second half of the 19th century was an age of fairs and expositions held in London, Paris, and other great cities throughout the world. The World's Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893, was the first critically and economically successful U.S. world's fair. Conceived as a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing in the new world, the Exposition held a near-mythological appeal for people of the time.
The Columbian Exposition showcased a city just 60 years old, a city magnificently reborn just 22 years after the Chicago Fire. It also placed before the world the genius of Chicago architects Daniel Burnham, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Louis Sullivan. In effect, the Columbian Exposition was Chicago's debut on a world stage as a locus of great architecture and burgeoning economic power.

The Chicago Defender, 1905
The Chicago Defender, which was founded by Robert S. Abbott on May 5, 1905, once heralded itself as "The World's Greatest Weekly." The newspaper was the nation's most influential black weekly newspaper by the advent of World War I, with more than two thirds of its readership base located outside of Chicago.
As a northern paper, The Defender had more freedom to denounce issues outright, and its editorial position was very militant, attacking racial inequities head-on. The Defender did not use the words "Negro" or "black" in its pages. Instead, African Americans were referred to as "the Race" and black men and women as "Race men and Race women.“
During World War I The Chicago Defender waged its most aggressive (and successful) campaign in support of "The Great Migration" movement. This movement resulted in over one and a half million southern blacks migrating to the North between 1915-1925.

Art is not created in a vacuum. Behind every work of art are layers of context. It is important to look
not only at the formal qualities of a work of art but also at the time period in which it was created.
What events were taking place at this time and in the location where the art was created? What events

What were the values and ideals from the time period in which the artwork was created?
Context can take many forms: historical, cultural, social, and political. It is important to understand the
context in which a work of art was created in order to understand the work of art in its own right and
within its own time, but also to understand how the context surrounding the work of art has changed
over time. In the process of addressing a work of art's context, you can see how aesthetic values and
ideals have also changed, thereby changing a work of art's context over time.
This module provides you with the tools needed to identify and then consider the context behind works

The second half of the 19th century was an age of fairs and expositions held in London, Paris, and other great cities throughout the world. The World's Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893, was the first critically and economically successful U.S. world's fair. Conceived as a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing in the new world, the Exposition held a near-mythological appeal for people of the time.
The Columbian Exposition showcased a city just 60 years old, a city magnificently reborn just 22 years after the Chicago Fire. It also placed before the world the genius of Chicago architects Daniel Burnham, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Louis Sullivan. In effect, the Columbian Exposition was Chicago's debut on a world stage as a locus of great architecture and burgeoning economic power.

The Chicago Defender, 1905
The Chicago Defender, which was founded by Robert S. Abbott on May 5, 1905, once heralded itself as "The World's Greatest Weekly." The newspaper was the nation's most influential black weekly newspaper by the advent of World War I, with more than two thirds of its readership base located outside of Chicago.
As a northern paper, The Defender had more freedom to denounce issues outright, and its editorial position was very militant, attacking racial inequities head-on. The Defender did not use the words "Negro" or "black" in its pages. Instead, African Americans were referred to as "the Race" and black men and women as "Race men and Race women.“

. You will select and present on the significances of two works of black culture. The first work you select must be a work of African-American literature, poetry, music, fashion, dance, or some other cultural art form that was created and/or popularized by an
African American
during the time periods of the Harlem and Chicago Renaissances (1917-1949). Your second work of black culture must have been created and/or popularized by a black person (but not necessarily an African American) within YOUR lifetime. For example, if you were born in 1999, your second cultural selection needs to have been created by a black person between 1999 and the present. The two works you select to present do not have to share a cultural form (i.e. one work can be a poem and the other can be a song; one work can be a painting and the other can be a fashion trend). The paper must thoroughly address your chosen social problem, investigate possible solutions for the problem, incorporate five peer-reviewed resources and journal articles, and have a properly formatted reference page.
Papers will be between 6 to 8 pages in length. It is important to convey your subject and topic content concisely for your final assignment. Longer assignments have a tendency to veer off subject. It is important to clearly write about your topic. (An example of a research paper outline is included below which might be of interest to you).
Remember that you must discuss the roles that the church, the family, and the community should play in the solutions to the problem. Additionally, be sure to incorporate biblical support for the positions and opinions that you express.
Review the grading rubric to improve the quality of your paper. Your paper will be submitted through SafeAssign, a tool used to detect plagiarism.

Double-spaced, flush left margin. An abstract is a brief, comprehensive summary of the contents of the article. An abstract reports rather than evaluates. Be brief, and make each sentence informative, especially the lead sentence. An abstract will be viewed alone on the page. An abstract will not include citations per APA guidelines.

The body of a manuscript opens with an introduction that presents the specific problem being studied, and describes the research strategy. Although not mandatory, APA citations can be included in an introduction.

- 1. You must complete an Electronic Presentation on Black Culture. You will select and present on the significances of two works of black culture. The first work you select must be a work of African-American literature, poetry, music, fashion, dance, or some other cultural art form that was created and/or popularized by an African American during the time periods of the Harlem and Chicago Renaissances (1917-1949). Your second work of black culture must have been created and/or popularized by a black person (but not necessarily an African American) within YOUR lifetime. For example, if you were born in 1999, your second cultural selection needs to have been created by a black person between 1999 and the present. The two works you select to present do not have to share a cultural form (i.e. one work can be a poem and the other can be a song; one work can be a painting and the other can be a fashion trend). Nor do the two works have to share a particular theme. You may choose to do a compare-and-contrast type presentation. But, you do not have to. In presenting the works, you will need to provide background information on your chosen works (i.e. when where the works created; who created them or made them famous; and, what impact did the works have on the cultural landscape when and since they first appeared?). You will also have to briefly explain why you made those particular selections, and explain what you think each work tells people about the ways in which African-American/Black culture and experiences remained congruent and/or changed from the eras of the Harlem and Chicago Renaissances to the modern era.
