The Opportunity
Dwayne Clarke and Fred Munk were sitting in their weekly sales meeting with their new manager (GM) Bruce Hunter. The local pet supply company, ACME Pets, for which they both had worked more than six years, had recently been acquired by a large national company, GC Pet Supplies (GCPS). This was their 4th such meeting with the entire sales team. Dwayne and Fred had caught eyes when their Machiavellian boss (Bruce) had just announced another day and route change for delivery to a particular area. Bruce defended the change with the comment, ‘who are the customers going to get their supplies from if they don’t like it?’ GCPS had not only purchased ACME but also their only significant competitor, attaining a virtual monopoly in the region. Independently, Dwayne and Fred both thought that perhaps ‘I should be the one that the customer can go to.’ After the sales meeting Dwayne and Fred privately shared their thoughts with each other.
Background
Dwayne had worked for ACME Pets for nine years, starting as a warehouse labourer while he finished college. Upon graduation, the owner approached him about taking over a sales route for a departing rep. The position was perfect for him. His warm genuine personality quickly won over his customers and eventually Dwayne grew his territory to over $2 million in annual sales, one third of that office’s total.
Fred had started six years earlier as a buyer and had built a strong relationship with over one hundred vendors from whom they purchased products. Fred’s philosophy was that his city was a small, expensive stop for most vendor sales reps; therefore, he was keen to give them time and listen to their presentations when they visited. He wasn’t an easy mark but he gave everyone an honest shake. Fred worked hard and simultaneously pursued an advanced management degree. His efforts paid off and he moved up the company ladder rapidly and at the time that GCPS bought ACME, he was the General Manager. As such, Fred had ample opportunity to build relationships with many of the customers and vendors that worked with ACME. However, Fred rarely had contact with Dwayne’s customers as they were already being serviced beyond company expectations.
Status Quo or New Venture?
As Dwayne and Fred pondered the possibility of starting a new pet supply company, they grappled with the ethics of performing any due diligence while staying employed with their eventual competitor. They decided to ask some questions and do the underlying research over the coming months. Ultimately, they had to determine at what point to terminate their employment if they felt the opportunity was worth pursuing.

A democracy is a form of government in which the ultimate authority is bestowed upon the people and explicitly expressed within them under a free political society. This is reflected in that the government depends on factors such as the political system. With few people participating, an increase in involvement in old and new ways would come at the risk of a growing gap between the economically wealthy and the financially disadvantaged (Bpp, L., Bruno El-Khoury, I., & Bhusal, T., 2017). The political governance that impacts voters can be attributed to voter apathy on how the control system function in democracy, particularly at the state level. This could be a disparity between how the electorate feel and what they encounter, and this may lead to disaster at general elections and a poor turnout (Khalid, A., Gonyea, D., & Fadel, L., 2018). Despite their participation, others are ignorant of the shift in a country's rise in voter turnout. Often people don't like neither politicians, not polling is a sign of rejection. Many cases voters can't even distinguish between politicians, which drives them not to cast a ballot because they are not interested in obtaining information about candidates.

In 2002, Blake Mycoskie competed with his sister Paige on The Amazing Race—a reality show where
groups of two people with existing relationships engage in a global race to win valuable prizes, with the
winner receiving a coveted grand prize. Although Blake’s team finished third in the second season of the
show, the experience afforded him the opportunity to visit Argentina, where he returned in 2006 and
developed the idea to build a company around the alpargata—a popular style of shoe in that region.

When Dora Marquez graduated from college three years ago, she really wanted a fully equipped Honda Civic. Her monthly payment would be about $350 per month, about $70 more than she could afford. To help Dora meet her budget, the dealer suggested that she lease the vehicle and offered a 42-month lease option at $270 per month with a driving maximum of 12,000 miles per year. The contract had a $0.30 per mile fee at the end of the lease for any excess mileage. Now, with six more months on her lease, Dora is already 1500 miles over the 42,000 (3.5 × 12,000) mileage limit in her contract. What is Dora's best option at this point?
A. Turn back the vehicle now and pay the $450 (1500 × $0.30) for excess mileage.
B. Try to cut back on her driving to minimize her excess mileage fee, which could be higher than $2500 if she keeps driving at the same rate as she has been.
C. Stop driving the car and pay $450 for excess mileage when she turns it back at the end of the lease.
D. Continue driving the vehicle and buy it at the end of the lease by paying the residual value agreed upon when she entered into the contract.
The answer is D. None of the other options is financially practical. Dora learned a hard lesson. Leases may have a lower monthly payment but have hidden costs that often are not known until the very end of the contract!

Dog Eat Dog World: Challenges of an Entrepreneurial Start-up
The Opportunity
Dwayne Clarke and Fred Munk were sitting in their weekly sales meeting with their new manager (GM) Bruce Hunter. The local pet supply company, ACME Pets, for which they both had worked more than six years, had recently been acquired by a large national company, GC Pet Supplies (GCPS). This was their 4th such meeting with the entire sales team. Dwayne and Fred had caught eyes when their Machiavellian boss (Bruce) had just announced another day and route change for delivery to a particular area. Bruce defended the change with the comment, ‘who are the customers going to get their supplies from if they don’t like it?’ GCPS had not only purchased ACME but also their only significant competitor, attaining a virtual monopoly in the region. Independently, Dwayne and Fred both thought that perhaps ‘I should be the one that the customer can go to.’ After the sales meeting Dwayne and Fred privately shared their thoughts with each other.
Background
Dwayne had worked for ACME Pets for nine years, starting as a warehouse labourer while he finished college. Upon graduation, the owner approached him about taking over a sales route for a departing rep. The position was perfect for him. His warm genuine personality quickly won over his customers and eventually Dwayne grew his territory to over $2 million in annual sales, one third of that office’s total.
Fred had started six years earlier as a buyer and had built a strong relationship with over one hundred vendors from whom they purchased products. Fred’s philosophy was that his city was a small, expensive stop for most vendor sales reps; therefore, he was keen to give them time and listen to their presentations when they visited. He wasn’t an easy mark but he gave everyone an honest shake. Fred worked hard and simultaneously pursued an advanced management degree. His efforts paid off and he moved up the company ladder rapidly and at the time that GCPS bought ACME, he was the General Manager. As such, Fred had ample opportunity to build relationships with many of the customers and vendors that worked with ACME. However, Fred rarely had contact with Dwayne’s customers as they were already being serviced beyond company expectations.
Status Quo or New Venture?
As Dwayne and Fred pondered the possibility of starting a new pet supply company, they grappled with the ethics of performing any due diligence while staying employed with their eventual competitor. They decided to ask some questions and do the underlying research over the coming months. Ultimately, they had to determine at what point to terminate their employment if they felt the opportunity was worth pursuing.
After 7 months, the preliminary research looked promising. They determined that the potential enterprise had merit. .

A democracy is a form of government in which the ultimate authority is bestowed upon the people and explicitly expressed within them under a free political society. This is reflected in that the government depends on factors such as the political system. With few people participating, an increase in involvement in old and new ways would come at the risk of a growing gap between the economically wealthy and the financially disadvantaged (Bpp, L., Bruno El-Khoury, I., & Bhusal, T., 2017). The political governance that impacts voters can be attributed to voter apathy on how the control system function in democracy, particularly at the state level. This could be a disparity between how the electorate feel and what they encounter, and this may lead to disaster at general elections and a poor turnout (Khalid, A., Gonyea, D., & Fadel, L., 2018). Despite their participation, others are ignorant of the shift in a country's rise in voter turnout. Often people don't like neither politicians, not polling is a sign of rejection. Many cases voters can't even distinguish between politicians, which drives them not to cast a ballot because they are not interested in obtaining information about candidates.

In our discussion of intercultural communication, we stated that cultural influences are dynamic, shifting, and overlapping. Additionally, we suggested that the characteristics associated with the members of a cultural group should be considered as indicators of central tendency—not every member will be influenced to the same degree by their cultural memberships or display precisely the same characteristics or behaviors. Using an example from your personal experience, discuss two people that would be considered members of the same cultural group yet who differ significantly from one another. Discuss their similarities and differences and speculate as to the underlying reasons for their existence.

In the presentation and chapter on intercultural communication, several tactics for intercultural communication competence are described. Choose an intercultural communication interaction from the

where you feel the communication between parties was ineffective. Explore how their interaction might be improved by specifically applying two of the tactics for intercultural communication competence mentioned in the chapter and presentation. Alternately, you may choose to apply two of the tactics to an event from your personal experience that you feel is an appropriate example of an ineffective intercultural interaction.

One of the themes explored in the

was the use of cultural stereotypes. Choose 3 specific stereotypes referenced in the film and discuss how they impacted the events portrayed in the film. If you had hypothetically switched places with one of the characters in the film discuss whether or not you might have (even unknowingly) been influence by some of the same stereotypical perceptions and explain the reasoning behind your answer.
Alternately, you may choose to discuss in detail 3 situations where you erroneously applied stereotypes in an interaction with someone else or were affected by another inaccurately stereotyping you.

One area of difference in communication codes discussed in the unit on intercultural communication are differences in cultural communication styles—culturally defined rules governing communication that can affect how members of a cultural group approach particular communication tasks—including the topics are acceptable for discussion in a given situation, and those that are taboo, what contexts are appropriate for a given communication task (e.g. sharing personal information), and other norms that influence their expectations for how a given communication interaction should take place. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
